Conductor Assaulted & Abused By Intoxicated Youths After Questioning Students Hanging From Footboard

An incident in which a bus conductor was assaulted and abused after questioning students travelling dangerously on a government bus has caused shock and concern.

According to sources, the incident occurred on a state-run bus travelling from Villupuram to Panruti. A group of students were reportedly hanging onto the footboard of the moving bus, dragging their legs along the road in a dangerous manner and causing inconvenience to other passengers. Noticing this, the bus conductor, identified as Madan, warned and reprimanded the students.

Angered by this, the students are said to have contacted their friends over the phone and asked them to come to Panruti. When the bus reached Panruti, a group of youths who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol confronted the conductor and picked a quarrel with him. The youths then assaulted Madan, causing injuries.

Members of the public intervened, rescued the injured conductor, and admitted him to a government hospital for treatment. Police were informed about the incident, and an investigation is under way to identify and take action against those involved in the assault.

Meanwhile, the incident has once again drawn attention to the increasing trend of school and college students engaging in risky behaviour while travelling on buses and suburban trains. Driven by the craze for social media reels, students are often seen hanging from footboards, boarding and alighting from moving vehicles, and recording such acts for online sharing.

Such behaviour has, in the past, led to students sustaining injuries after slipping from footboards or even losing their lives after getting caught under bus wheels. In cities like Chennai, police are deployed near schools, colleges, and major traffic points during peak hours to prevent clashes involving students and ensure public safety. However, members of the public have expressed concern that despite these measures, such dangerous practices among students continue unabated.
