In what can be seen as a case of ‘attempted’ honour killing, police in Tirunelveli have registered a case against Selva Karunanidhi, the north union secretary of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) at Kalakkad, for allegedly attempting to murder a youth by ramming a car into him after objecting to the latter’s relationship with his daughter.
According to the police, the victim is the son of Thiraviyam, a Congress leader and former president of the Soorangudi village panchayat. The police said both the youth and the woman were adults, belonged to the same community, and had been in a relationship for some time.
Police sources stated that the incident occurred on Monday, 22 December 2025, when the youth and Karunanidhi’s daughter were speaking at a public place. At that time, Karunanidhi allegedly arrived at the spot in a car. On seeing them together, he is said to have driven the vehicle at high speed towards the youth, knocking him down and causing injuries.
Bystanders reportedly intervened, rescued the injured youth, and shifted him to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Based on a complaint, the Kalakkad police registered a case against Selva Karunanidhi under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including attempt to murder. Police sources said statements from the victim and eyewitnesses were being recorded, and CCTV footage from the area was being examined to establish the sequence of events.
As of Tuesday (23 December 2025) evening, Karunanidhi had not been arrested and was reported to be absconding, according to police sources.
