Finland makes 16 year-old girl Prime Minister for a day

As part of a global ‘Girls Takeover’ campaign by children’s rights charity Plan International, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin made a 16-year-old teenager the Prime Minister for a day. This campaign aims to promote girls’ rights in the country.

The teenager is Aava Murto of Vaasky from southern Finland. She said she was having an ‘exciting day’ as she faced the media on the steps of the Parliament after a meeting with the Chancellor of Justice.

Aava Murto may not be making any new laws on Wednesday, but she met politicians throughout the day to highlight women’s rights in technology. The teenager, who actively campaigns on climate and human rights issues, applied to take part in the scheme. She rounded off the day by meeting the Prime Minister to discuss gender equality in technology on Wednesday evening.

The swap comes ahead of the UN’s Day of the Girl and is part of a global campaign by a children’s charity. It is the fourth year Finland has taken part in Plan International’s “Girls Takeover”, which allows teenagers from countries from across the globe to step into the shoes of leaders in politics and other sectors for a day.
