Kollywood actors have been falling in line with the ruling DMK’s narrative and propaganda for quite some time. Now, the latest to join the DMK stooge bandwagon is senior actor Vijayakumar.
Speaking at an event in Purasaiwakkam on the birth anniversary of DMK patriarch Karunanidhi which is celebrated as “Classical Language Day”, Vijayakumar peddled lies that fell flat, thanks to the baselessness of it.
The event saw the attendance of HR&CE minister Sekar Babu as well.
He said, “Speaking about students, I want to say something in this regard. My hometown is in Pattukottai, and when I was in school, Rajaji introduced a scheme called Kulakalvi – we have to study half the time and work half the time. I was greatly affected by that. I come from a farming family. What was I supposed to do in farming? Irrigate, plant or what? It’s not a big thing. Anyone can do that. But because he introduced that Kulakalvi scheme (traditional occupation scheme), I had to discontinue my studies by 8th standard. It was called ESLC then. 11th grade was called SSLC, then you had PUC. Now everything has changed. Even if I couldn’t study, there were many reasons for it. But you must study well and bring pride to this country and its people and to your hometown and parents. You all have a great opportunity. Today, Chief Minister has introduced breakfast scheme along with the midday meals scheme. He helps everyone. Just so everyone is well, he is the chief minister who works day and night for the people, he is none other than our TN chief minister, our Thalapathy. Muthuval Karunanidhi Stalin is the chief minister who is protecting the people especially the students of this state. And the one who is ably supporting him is our dear minister, Sekar Babu. We don’t know when he works, eats, sleeps, it is always work for the people – all the time. He is always on his feet when it comes to work – he does whatever chief minister tells him to. “Working like a top”, such a top is our minister.”
Truth About Rajaji’s Kulakalvi Scheme
The Modified Scheme of Elementary Education, introduced by then Madras Chief Minister C. Rajagopalachari, also known as Rajaji, in June 1953, aimed to reform rural education by combining classroom learning with vocational training. Students would attend school for three hours and spend the rest of the day learning their family’s traditional occupation. Critics condemned it as a ‘casteist’ policy meant to reinforce hereditary labor, particularly among non-Brahmin and Dalit communities. The scheme sparked widespread protests, especially from the Dravidian movement, who saw it as a threat to educational access and social mobility. Though Rajaji defended it as a cost-effective, Gandhian model of education, intense public backlash and internal dissent within the Congress Party forced him to suspend the scheme just over a month later, on 29 July 1953. It was formally scrapped in May 1954 by his successor, K. Kamaraj, marking its existence as a controversial and short-lived episode in Tamil Nadu’s education history.

Thus, Vijayakumar’s claim that he had to discontinue education because of Rajaji’s kulakalvi scheme is a lie and nothing but propaganda.
