At the Maruvathur village of Kunnam Taluk in Perambalur district, two temples believed to be atleast 800 years old remain in a state of neglect and unmaintained by the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department for several years.
One temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the other is a Perumal temple. The two temples remain in a dilapidated condition with no compound walls and thorny bushes growing all around the temple. Many of the idols have already reportedly been stolen from the two temples.
Land spanning several acres belonging to these temples have also been encroached and is being used for farming.
Despite the local devotees and youth petitioning the District Collector and the HR&CE department to take steps to rejuvenate the temple, there has been no efforts taken.
