5 tonnes oxygen produced at Thoothukudi Sterlite plant brought to Tirunelveli GH

In the first phase of producing and supplying oxygen to hospitals in Tamil Nadu, about 5 tonnes of oxygen produced from Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper Plant in Thoothukudi was brought to the Government Hospital at Thoothukudi on Thursday.

As the second wave of Wuhan virus rages across Tamil Nadu, the demand for oxygen has increased several folds. Both government and private hospitals are facing oxygen shortage.

To address the shortage, Vedanta had earlier moved the Supreme Court to let their Sterlite plant open for producing oxygen and supply to hospitals. Before the new DMK government came to power, at the all party meeting convened by then Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, it was decided by all the parties including the DMK that the plant can be opened for producing oxygen.

Following this Sterlite has been producing oxygen at the Sterlite plant under the supervision of district administration.
