Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 27 February 2026, targeted the DMK government in Tamil Nadu, alleging that it was not showing adequate interest in implementing central welfare schemes meant for the poor.
Speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, Modi accused the Congress and its allies of lacking sincerity toward underprivileged citizens and cited Tamil Nadu as an example. He stated that progress under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) had slowed in the state.
“Under the PM Awas Yojana, permanent houses are being built for the poor across the country. In Tamil Nadu, 9.5 lakh permanent houses have been allotted to poor families, but construction of 3 lakh houses has stalled because the DMK government is not taking interest in building homes for the poor. Because the intention is not sincere,” he said.
The Prime Minister framed the issue as part of a broader criticism of opposition-ruled states, arguing that governance intent played a key role in welfare delivery. His remarks come as political activity intensifies ahead of upcoming electoral battles in several states.
