17 people including DMK office bearers arrested for selling drugs to school children

It has come to light that some of the DMK office bearer are behind the sale of painkillers used by cancer patients as drugs to youngsterwho are now addicted to them.

Pills used as painkillers to alleviate the pain and suffering of cancer patients are allegedly being sold at low prices in several localities of Chennai. Anti-social elements are taking advantage of this by buying these drugs at very low prices and selling them off to youngsters. Doctors say that young people are becoming addicted to these drugs because they are twice as addictive as alcohol and cannabis.

It has been reported that several WhatsApp groups are being used for this drug dealing. According to the police, the drugs are being sold through the same WhatsApp network in Chennai. It has been reported that drug sales are rampant, especially in Old Washermenpet, Tiruvottiyur, Nolambur, Thiyagaraya Nagar, Anna Nagar, Choolai, Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni and other parts of the city.

The police investigating the case conducted have been enquiring several suspects in these areas and had closed in on a few persons – Channu, Alla Bagesh, Arun, Babu, Vijay.  During the investigation, it was found that some key figures in the ruling DMK were buying drugs from specific pharmacies and agents for double the price and selling them at prices several times higher.

The main kingpins in the drug racket has been found to be one Rithis from Kerala along with several DMK office bearers from Washermanpet like Babu, Azharuddin, Aslam, and ‘Dio’ Karthik. Azharuddin’s father ‘Kazhaga’ Babu, who was arrested, is the organizer of the DMK Traders Wing in the 53rd ward in Royapuram area.  It has been revealed that DMK executives Babu and Kumaresan had joined hands with Azharuddin to sell drugs to school children. So far, 17 people have been arrested and jailed, including DMK office bearers for selling drugs.
