The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) Department authorities in Sivagangai reclaimed 11 acres of land belonging to the Gauri Vinayagar temple and sealed the building constructed on it.
HR&CE maintained Gauri Vinayagar Temple in Sivagangai has 11 acres of land in the village of Kanjirangal on the Thanjavur Highway. Pandi, a resident of Sivagangai, occupied the 11 acres of land belonging to the temple and built a commercial complex.
A complaint was lodged with the HR&CE Department by the locals regarding the encroachment of the temple land. Following this, the authorities went to the occupied area, reclaimed the land, sealed the building, and put up a notice board stating that the land belonged to the Gauri Vinayagar Temple.
According to HR&CE officials, the current worth of the recovered land is approximately ₹ 50 crore. Pandi, who usurped the temple land, is said to be a benami of former minister Baskaran. Residents and devotees questioned HR&CE officials about taking action against the former minister.
