Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the 75^th Victory Day Parade through Moscow’s Red Square on Tuesday, which marks the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Addressing the gathering in Moscow, he said that the world owed the Soviet Union a debt of gratitude for having defeated the Nazi German force in World War II.

“It is impossible even to imagine what the world would be if the Red Army hadn’t come to defend it”, Putin said, adding that the Soviet “freed European countries from invaders, put an end to the terrible tragedy of the Holocaust, saved the German people from Nazism, from its deadly ideology”.

He also urged the millions of Russians who were watching his televised address to remember the sacrifices made by the Soviet Union and how the majority of the burden against Nazi Germany had been on their shoulders.

The Victory Day Parade was postponed for the first time in years because of the coronavirus pandemic.  This was then rescheduled, after the lockdown measures were eased in the country.

Notably, Rajnath Singh, India’s Defence Minister took part in the Victory Day celebrations. As an expression of solidarity, the tri-service contingent of the Indian Armed Forces participated in the parade, and marched at the Red Square. The Indian Army contingent is one of the armed forces to participate in this parade, along with 11 other countries, including China.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Russia to attend the Victory Parade on 24^th June as part of the celebrations for 75^th anniversary of Soviet Russia’s victory over Germany in the Second World War.

Mr. Rajnath Singh had tweeted that the 3 day visit would him an opportunity to hold talks on ways to strengthen India-Russia defence and strategic partnership.

The Defence Minister’s visit comes amidst India’s standoff with China.

The Parade is organized to honor the heroism and sacrifices made by the Russian and other friendly people.

Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu had invited Mr. Rajnath Singh to the Victory Parade. The Parade was earlier scheduled on 9^th May but was postponed due to pandemic COVID-19. Apart from Mr. Rajnath Singh, a Tri-Service 75 – Member Indian Military Contingent has already reached Moscow to participate in the Victory Parade along with Russian contingent and other invited contingents. A major rank officer of the valiant Sikh Light Infantry Regiment will lead the Indian march in the Victory Day Parade.

The Regiment had fought with courage in World War II and has the proud distinction of owning four Battle Honours and two Military Cross amongst other gallantry awards. The Indian participation in the Victory Parade will be a mark of tribute to the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in World War II.

The Indian forces will participate in the parade alongside the armed forces of 11 other nations including China.

Earlier Prime Minister had congratulated President Vladimir Putin and Defence Minister congratulated his counterpart through social media on the occasion of the 75^th Victory Day.
