Tamilaga Vazhvumurai Katchi leader and Panruti MLA T. Velmurugan has once again launched a scathing attack against Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor-turned-politician Vijay, following a wave of backlash from the actor’s supporters online. This comes after TVK cadres and fans demanded an apology from Velmurugan and flooded social media with targeted attacks.

Speaking at a public meeting in Thenkanikottai, Velmurugan questioned the nature of the criticism aimed at him, “Do they think I’m uneducated? It’s embarrassing that they’re making school children respond to me on their behalf. While Vijay was still acting in films, we were out on the streets fighting for the rights of Tamil people.”

During a party event in Krishnagiri, Velmurugan addressed the growing tension between his party and Vijay’s supporters, stating, “When it comes to the livelihood struggles of Tamil Nadu, it is the cadres of the Tamilaga Vazhvumurai Katchi have consistently taken to the streets. No fans or film heroes have stepped to the streets. But when we speak this truth openly, it angers many. Even today, they are making school children to respond to us—how pitiful! They call us ‘illiterate’ but to those illiterates who call us illiterate, I say that I have documented the full history of the Tamilaga Vazhvumurai Katchi from the day it was founded on my page under the name “Velmurugan T.” Illiterates know about that. Go read it. Listen to it’s all on YouTube.

Yet today, these Illiterates and irresponsible (tharuthalai) asking, “Who is Velmurugan?” When you were all dancing around hugging film, Velmurugan was on the streets, shoulder to shoulder with the Tamil liberation front, fighting for Tamil rights. If needed, I will share my life story at this very meeting. I invite all those who are curious or illiterates to come, listen, and learn. I’ve spent up to 1 hour 45 minutes in meetings and called someone come straight away speaking about how much Tamil society entered into a cultural decay. Look at the moral decay in cinema, in television serials, on TikTok, and how much cultural decay is there. Even in ‘shorts’, the cultural deterioration is evident. Just to get more views on YouTube, some disgraceful and shameless individuals in our society are now even exposing their own bodies. Utterly enraging by this and I have raised this issue in public meetings across all of Tamil Nadu. Today, 8th and 10th standard schoolgirls, whose parents gave them smartphones to study. The smartphones that were provided to children to study during the COVID are being lured into this cultural destruction, moral and civilizational collapse—leading to a disrespect of parents and a highly competitive, dangerous mindset.”

He later took a jab saying, “You criticized my brother? He may not be your brother, but the one who was called the ‘Superstar’ of this country Rajinikanth was the one who glamorized smoking cigarettes and corrupted an entire younger generation. I was the one who said this. Are you any greater than Rajini? When actor Vijayakanth, who gave generously and acted with heart, made a mistake, it was Velmurugan who openly called it out as Vijayakanth’s fault. Are you big p*dungi than Vijayakanth fans?”

Tamilaga Vazhvumurai Katchi (TVK) leader and Panruti MLA T. Velmurugan has issued a warning to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor-turned-politician Vijay, urging him not to allow inexperienced party cadres to make public statements without understanding Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Velmurugan added that if Vijay believes he (Velmurugan) has said anything inappropriate, he should address the media directly through a press meet and Velmurugan would respond accordingly.

The MLA was reacting strongly to the criticism leveled against him by TVK functionaries who demanded that Velmurugan apologize for his recent comments about young women student, which was a moral policing and regressive. His advice to parents regarding their daughters’ behavior had sparked public backlash, prompting TVK cadres to demand an apology.

However, while speaking to reporters in Cuddalore, Velmurugan stood by his earlier statements, clarifying that his words were deliberate and meant as advice to parents not a criticism of Vijay. He stated, “Many young women, many husbands, wives, even women with their parents are often seen in cinema or television shows treating film heroes as their incarnation (ideal men), hugging and kissing them, and indulging in such uncivilized acts right in front of their own parents. When we see such behavior before various media and newspapers, is not acceptable. After saying that, I also listed out several actors’ names and said appreciate their acting, enjoy their performances, I won’t say don’t do that. But as parents, you should not allow your children especially the daughters you have raised and nurtured to fall for such over-glamorized cinema personalities. You must not permit them to behave with actors in such undue advantage. This is not Tamil culture, this is not civilization. We Tamils have a distinct culture, a sense of civilization, and a rich heritage. Based on that foundation, I expressed my views.”

Later added, “We do not need this kind of cut-out culture, eating mansoru, nakedly beating with neem leaves without wearing, going on a pilgrimage to Tirupati just so a film can run for 100 days, and rolling all the way to the Palani Murugan temple. Have you ever, even once, gone and touched the feet of the parents who gave birth and raised to you on your birthday seeking blessings? But why then do you perform paal abhishekam for film stars? Why say things like, “I came here at 3 AM just to see my hero. I’ve been here since yesterday. I’ve been waiting with devotion. If only I could hug him once and give him a kiss, my life’s goal would be complete” These are the kinds of things some women are saying openly in press meets and television debates. Such speech should not be encouraged. This is not our culture or tradition. Parents should never allow this. I strongly condemned such acts and spoke against them. But without even listening to my full one-hour-forty-minute speech, a few half-baked cadres have shouting, “You’ve spoken against our Thalapathy (leader)! You must apologize immediately!” These kinds of outbursts and press statements are completely unnecessary.”

Tamilaga Vazhvumurai Katchi (TVK) leader and Panruti MLA T Velmurugan has stirred controversy with comments seen as moral policing and character assassination, directed at a female student during what was meant to be criticism of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay.

The incident occurred during an event in Mahabalipuram, where Vijay hosted a felicitation ceremony on 4 June 2025 for Class 10 and 12 toppers. Held at a private hall, the event saw emotional moments between students and the actor, with several greeting him warmly some students even hugged and kissed him out of admiration. These moments, widely shared on social media, were largely seen by fans as heartfelt displays of affection.

However, Velmurugan, while speaking at a public meeting in Salem, harshly criticized the event targeting the behavior of the students and attacking their families. He questioned whether it was part of Tamil culture for young female students to hug and kiss film stars, and whether such behavior was appropriate when done publicly, especially in the presence of parents, journalists and media.

Velmurugan said, “Today, someone acted in two films and after becoming a superstar says, ‘I am the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.’ As soon as he gives a 2-gram gift, our fool… I won’t blame the actor. He’s taking along a matured girl… She who has just finished her Plus Two and in three months going to complete college. He is taking along college girls… Doesn’t a Tamil have any common sense? That girl, who was born, raised, and brought up—who tomorrow has to live as someone’s wife—right in front of her father and mother, in front of thousands of media people and journalists, you’re allowing her to hug and kiss a cinema performer… What kind of lowly birth is this? Is this the birth of a Tamilian? She says ‘Vijay Anna’… Vijay has acted? Appreciate it. Praise Ajith, praise Rajini, praise Sharath… Praise our patchai Tamilian Sathyaraj. But how can parents allow this kind of behavior? Is this Tamil society? Is this Tamil tradition? Is this the land where the brave clan of Tamil women lived? And we say this is Tamil soil?”

His comments, targeting specific female student and her parents, quickly drew backlash on social media. Critics accused Velmurugan of resorting to regressive thinking, publicly shaming a student, and crossing a line under the guise of cultural criticism, with many calling Velmurugan’s remarks demeaning and demanding accountability for his statements.

Tamilaga Vazhvumurai Katchi (TVK) president and Panruti MLA T. Velmurugan has slammed the DMK, his party’s ally, over the eviction and demolition of homes in areas like Anakaputhur and Saidapet in Chennai.

Speaking at an event organized by the Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Association, Velmurugan condemned the ruling DMK government for forcibly removing residents from 15 villages, including Eknapuram, allegedly to make way for a private airport project that “doesn’t even have a single flight.

Drawing parallels with demolitions in Delhi, Velmurugan said, “Here, for the sake of a private (entity) Tata that doesn’t even have a single flight, people from 15 villages including Eknapuram are being chased out and thrown away. Today, in Delhi, a thousand homes are being demolished. There is no one to question. Children are crying, schoolboys and girls in uniform, there’s no one to hear them. Fine, in Delhi, it’s at least 2000 miles away. In Delhi, if it’s the BJP government, then in our own Tamil Nadu, it’s our alliance government the DMK government in Chennai that is demolishing and throwing out people from marginalised communities, from coastal regions, from riverside areas poor people displacing daily wage workers. From Kundrathur to Anakaputhur, from Saidapet to all parts of the city, they are being evicted and their homes razed. No one listens. And if questioned, they say the High Court ordered. So, I ask the High Court judges, you who sit on the judgement and deliver justice aren’t you aware that even the Madurai High Court is built on lakes and ponds? They say Valluvar Kottam was also built like that. Many star hotels, commercial complexes, and government buildings in Chennai all those tall towers and massive structures have been built on land that belonged to farmers or on waterbodies. Shouldn’t that be demolished and cleared instead of  clearing the homes of innocent people. One poor Muslim sister, with her two daughters, is falling at the feet of a police officer, begging him, crying — yet no one to listen. They just demolish and move on like nothing.”

What Prompted Velmurugan’s Outburst?

The criticism came in response to widespread evictions and demolitions taking place in Anakaputhur, particularly in areas like Quaid-E-Millath Nagar and Stalin Nagar. The Tambaram Corporation, citing flood mitigation efforts, has begun clearing what it says are unauthorized structures along the Adyar River.

According to officials, nearly 600 concrete homes are marked for demolition, with 593 structures already labeled as illegal encroachments. The operation, now in its third day, has already seen more than 300 homes demolished, following earlier similar efforts in Shanthi Nagar and Moogambi Nagar.

Corporation Commissioner S. Balachander, along with police and revenue officials, is overseeing the process to ensure public order. The government insists that residents are being relocated to newly built homes in Keerapakkam and Thailavaram, with resettlement plans also including Perumbakkam and Navalur.

Why Are Residents Protesting?

While authorities claim the demolitions are legally sanctioned and necessary for public safety, many residents say they’ve lived in these areas for decades—some for over 50 years. Several say they were even promised official land titles (pattas) not long before demolition notices were served.

Locals argue that the areas being cleared have established roads, power lines, and individual electricity meters provided by the government—calling into question the claim that their homes are illegal encroachments.

Furthermore, families report serious issues with the resettlement sites, citing lack of basic amenities and unsuitable living conditions. Many have been relocated far from their original neighborhoods, disrupting livelihoods, children’s education, and long-standing community bonds.

The DMK, which has revived the old tactics of opposing Hindi imposition, has taken it a step further by inciting a new agitation similar to the one in the 1960s. The party is attempting to provoke people into self-immolation in the name of sacrificing for the language, and leaders from the DMK alliance have been delivering provocative speeches. This move comes in the wake of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s statement that funding for schemes under the National Education Policy will only be provided once the policy is implemented. The DMK, however, has framed the situation as an imposition of Hindi by the central government. In response, the DMK alliance organized a protest near the Chennai District Collector’s Office to voice their opposition to the central government’s actions.

During the protest, Velmurugan, leader of the Tamizhaga Valvurimai Katchi (TVK) addressed the gathering, saying, “I have just one request to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on behalf of this meeting. We are continuously operating democratically. We pass resolutions in the legislative assemblies and send them to the Union Government. We pass bills and send them to the Governor. If you ask whether we should give a proper whip to the Union Government, which treats us as insignificant, now is the time. Make this a proper platform, make it a platform for opposing Hindi. We will not cooperate with Union Government offices located in Tamil Nadu. First, in all the toll booths which is my favorite in Tamil Nadu, the DMK workers and the public, led by you, should not pay any tax. Secondly, we won’t cooperate with GST.”

He suggested that Chief Minister MK Stalin announce that, Tamil Nadu will not support to CBSE schools affiliated with the Union Government and Central government institutions.

“Please announce that NLC company, located in my area and supplying electricity to five states, has acquired lands in my constituency, forcibly taking land from farmers and produces electricity. Get back all the officials involved. Tell them we will not support Adani Port. Tamil Nadu Police and the Tamil Nadu government will cooperate with you to acquire land for Tata in Paranthur. Let me see how amusing it will be whether Modi kneeling before you or not? Do it, Chief Minister, do it once.”, toll vandalizer Velmurugan said.

He continued, “Right from sister Kanimozhi, Raja, TR Baalu, all the Parliament members are tearing apart the unjust acts of the Sangh Parivar gang led by the Modi government. After Karunanidhi, the 40 MPs under the leadership of our Thalapathy (Stalin) are so talented that they are making the whole nation turn and look. None of the Sanghi gang (Sanghi gumbal) is able to answer any of the questions posed by our people. Nirmala Sitharaman is seething and crying (referring to her in singluar). That “mami” (a derogatory term for a Brahmin woman) only gets angry. If you, who eat curd rice, can get so angry, then how much angrier should we, who eat bone marrow (nalli elumbu), be? This is your betrayal of this land and its people. Whether it is Cyclone Ockhi Vardah cyclone or Thane cyclone or if there is a natural disaster, there is no money. There is no money if Chennai sinks. When we asked them to send a helicopter to rescue the Kurangani fire accident victims, they said our aircrafts cannot “see” after 6 o’clock. Then why the hell do we have a military helicopter? If I talk too much, Chief Minister Stalin will call me in the Assembly and ask me why Velu did you talk like this. I am getting angry.”

Then he said, “I have a humble request to tell the Chief Minister, to tell our Police Chief, DGP, ADGP, and IG of intelligence to allow Velmurugan to play on the ground. He will come to you naturally. I will lock the NLC gate tomorrow. They’re not allowing even a Tamil to work as a contract worker, while they’ve brought 3,000 Hindi-speaking people here. What kind of festival is this Sanghi organizing in that town? I don’t want to name it. Tamils, who have been stripped of their dignity, are going on trains to Kashi. Did you see the footage on TV? They were slapped with slippers. Glass was broken. They ask, ‘What kind of audacity to sit in the chair?’ He reply, ‘I have a reservation,’ but they dragged him boating, ‘I’m Hindi speaker, get down Tamil dog,’ all while scolding in Hindi.”

Velmurugan then made unsupported claims, stating that the BJP is bringing people from Assam and Odisha to his village. He also alleged that the BJP is depriving them of their rightful opportunities by bringing other state cadres in the civil services.

The issue of the three-language formula of the National Education Policy 2020 continues to simmer in Tamil Nadu. Speaking at a protest in Chennai against the three-language policy, Tamizhaga Vazhurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan made some disparaging and derogatory comments about Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, targeting her caste.

The parties allying with the DMK in Tamil Nadu decided to hold a protest against the “imposition of Hindi” on behalf of the I.N.D.I. alliance. The demonstration took place on 19 February 2025, with key political leaders in attendance, including Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Tamil Nadu Vazhuvrimai Katchi leader Velmurugan, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, Tamil Nadu Congress leader Selvapperundhagai, Dravidar Kazhagam leader Veeramani, and other prominent figures.

Velmurugan said, “Right from sister Kanimozhi, Raja, TR Baalu, all the Parliament members are tearing apart the unjust acts of the Sangh Parivar gang led by the Modi government. After Karunanidhi, the 40 MPs under the leadership of our Thalapathy (Stalin) are so talented that they are making the whole nation turn and look. Then why the hell do we have a military helicopter? If I talk too much, Chief Minister Stalin will call me in the Assembly and ask me why Velu did you talk like this. I am getting angry.”

This is not the first time FM Nirmala Sitharaman has been attacked for her Brahmin background. Right from DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran to DMK MP A Raja to Justice Chandru who recommended “solutions” to prevent caste violence in TN, every single Dravidianist has referred to her by derogatory casteist names.

The ruling DMK government is facing intense criticism from within its alliance, with the latest remarks coming from Tamilaga Vazhvumurai Katchi (TVK) President and Panruti MLA, T Velmurugan. He sharply criticized his alliance partner, the DMK, accusing them of treating alliance party leaders with disrespect, relegating them to mere “protocol” after elections while only using them for votes beforehand. He expressed concern, stating, “People will respond to this during the elections.”

Velmurugan addressed reporters at a private hotel in Cuddalore on 14 December 2024, highlighting the recurring issues in his constituency. He pointed out that whenever a disaster strikes Tamil Nadu, Cuddalore is often the most affected area. “My constituency has been severely impacted by the opening of the Sathanur dam, but the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has announced only ₹2,000 for family cardholders. However, even that has not been provided to the entire district,” he said.

He further mentioned, “Since 2001, I’ve been able to offer comfort to the people during disasters, but only the government can take meaningful action. I requested Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi to visit the affected areas, but he did not come. How many people can I personally help with my own resources as an MLA? The government provides ₹2,000 as compensation and asks people to beg for help, yet if someone dies from alcohol-related causes, the government offers ₹10 lakh.”

Velmurugan criticized the DMK mnisters, stating, “Before the elections, the DMK high command keeps alliance leaders properly informed. However, the same district heads once become ministers, they (ministers) won’t communicate. Instead, their Dabedar or household workers call us and say, ‘The minister asked me to inform you about the meeting.’ So, when seeking votes, we are alliance leaders, but once you become a minister, surrounded by siren cars, authorities, collectors, and SPs coming with striking force protection, your household workers and assistants will reach out to us? this is because you are a minister, if you speak directly will it harm your prestige? Which minister visiting this nine-constituency district, from opposition, ruling, or alliance parties, has contacted the MLAs directly to say, ‘we are coming for an inspection, review meeting, or to open a scheme on behalf of my department? Which minister has said that?’ After gaining this position, where did this addiction to power come from? After one year, where will you come? to meet the people. You seem to have completely forgotten that.”

He also blamed the authorities in his constituency for not contacting him, despite being a senior MLA and an alliance partner leader. He accused the officials of having the potential but failing to fulfill their duties during the recent floods in Cuddalore, declaring it a clear administrative failure.

Velmurugan slammed the DMK and questioned where the crores of public money were being spent, pointing out the lack of desilting and other important work. He expressed strong displeasure, accusing the party of prioritizing ministers and leaving him behind, either by not informing him directly or giving preference to the very minister he helped to win. He also criticized the hypocrisy of the DMK, saying that alliance partners are given seats next to the Chief Minister during elections, but afterward, they are pushed aside with excuses about “protocol.” “I have self-respect, so I’m not attending those events,” he said, sparking controversy.

This has sparked controversy, as other alliance partners, such as VCK, CPI(M), and Tamil Nadu Congress, have previously criticized the DMK. VCK leader Thirumavalavan, in particular, has been openly waging a continuous battle against the DMK for some time.

On 9 December 2024, Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi (TVK) President and Panruti MLA T. Velmurugan criticized his alliance partner, the DMK, in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly over the government’s disaster relief efforts. He remarked that “not even a small amount of good work has been done in my constituency by your department so far.” In response, DMK Speaker Appavu quickly intervened, defending his party and declaring that Velmurugan’s statement would not be included in the Assembly’s official minutes.

During the session, Velmurugan highlighted the ongoing struggles in his Panruti constituency, particularly in villages like Pagandai, Periya Pagandai, Chinna Pagandai, Kumaramangalam, Thorapadi, Pattambakkam, and Nellikuppam, which had been severely affected by natural disasters, especially rain, over the past four years. He explained that the people in these areas were facing significant hardships due to recurring floods. Velmurugan recounted his efforts to address the issue, mentioning that he had met with the relevant Minister for the first time in four years and submitted a letter requesting the construction of a dam and protective walls to prevent floods. While the Minister had instructed the department’s secretaries to take action, Velmurugan complained that no substantial progress had been made in his constituency.

Velmurugan stated, “For the past four years, hundreds of villages in my Panruti constituency, including Pagandai, Periya Pagandai, Chinna Pagandai, Kumaramangalam, Thorapadi, Pattambakkam, and Nellikuppam, and others, have been severely affected by natural disasters like heavy rains, causing immense suffering for the people. In response, I met with the Minister for the first time in four years and submitted a letter, requesting the construction of a protective dam in Pagandai, as well as protective walls and ramparts to prevent floods from entering the village. You also took the initiative and instructed the department secretaries to take action. However, for some reason, these steps have been overlooked, and not even a small amount of positive work has been carried out by your department in my constituency so far.”

The Speaker promptly intervened, stating, “Honorable member, we will remove that. Why is that, you should say terms like ‘a small help’ right.

Velmurugan, however, reiterated that if no progress had been made, this was the only way to describe the situation. The Speaker insisted on removing that phrase from the Assembly’s records and emphasized that specific details of what had not been done should be mentioned, rather than making broad statements.

Velmurugan responded quickly, saying, “If no work has been done, then we can only describe ‘not done’.” The Speaker retorted, “We need to specify exactly what has not been done, rather than making general statements. Therefore, we will remove that word from the minutes.” Velmurugan then called for immediate action, requesting that the Minister allocate special funds for his constituency once the session concluded. In response, House Leader Durai Murugan stated that immediate fund allocation was not feasible. However, he assured Velmurugan that his request would be considered for the next financial year, depending on available resources, and that the request had been officially acknowledged.

The Speaker then warned, “You are all senior members. You should not make allegations during this session. You should only ask for what is needed at this time.”

An inter-university Kabaddi tournament in Rajasthan turned controversial after opposing teams and local players allegedly attacked Tamil Nadu players.

The tournament, organized by private universities and featuring teams across India, saw participation from Tamil Nadu universities like SRM and Wales. Four teams from South India competed in the event. During a match between Tamil Nadu’s SRM University and Punjab’s Guru Kashi University, Tamil Nadu players raised objections to the referees over what they claimed were unfair scoring decisions.

The dispute escalated, leading to a physical altercation. Rajasthani players allegedly attacked Tamil Nadu players and coaches with seats in front of a crowd that included prominent actors and special guests. A video of the incident has since gone viral, showing the violence that left multiple Tamil Nadu players and a coach injured.

In addition to the physical assault, the Tamil Nadu players claimed they were verbally abused and asked to leave the tournament andgo back to Tamil Nadu.A witness who filmed the attack on their cell phone was allegedly assaulted, with attempts made to delete the footage.

Following the attack, the Tamil Nadu government contacted the host university in Rajasthan to inquire about the safety of its students. Officials assured that adequate measures were in place, and the Tamil Nadu players participated in subsequent matches before preparing to return home.

Political Reactions

DMK ally Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan framed the incident as an act of anti-Tamil hostility. He claimed that North Indians were inciting hatred against the Tamil players was shocking and criticized what he termed ananti-Tamil mentalityin the north. He condemned the assault as an attempt to undermine Tamil Nadu’s success in sports and called on the state government to ensure appropriate legal action against those responsible. He wrote, The anti-Tamil mentality of North Indians who cannot accept Tamils winning even in a sports competition. The incident of an attack on a Kabaddi player and coach from Tamil Nadu in Rajasthan is very shocking. While teams from 4 universities from Tamil Nadu were participating in the All India Inter-University Kabaddi Competition being held in Rajasthan, the SRM University team from Tamil Nadu and the Guru Kashi University team from Punjab were playing in a league match, and the results were announced against the leading SRM University team and in favor of the Punjab University team, the incident of an attack on other teams and coaches from Tamil Nadu who opposed this is very shocking.

Three players and a coach from Tamil Nadu were injured in this attack, and the anti-Tamil mentality and hatred of North Indians are to the extent that it is unacceptable for players from Tamil Nadu to win even in a sports competition held to promote unity and brotherhood. I request the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that the state government takes appropriate action against the person involved in the above attack and exerts appropriate pressure on him.”

Significant condemnation erupted following the controversial remark of T. Velmurugan, the founder of the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) party and the Panruti constituency MLA, had compared the banned terror linked outfit Popular Front of India (PFI), which is listed under the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act), to the Indian armed forces during a protest rally in Chennai on 16 November 2024. The PFI’s political wing organized the rally, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), which was demanding the release of Muslim prisoners and the provision of 7% reservation for Muslims in education and employment. His remarks sparked widespread outrage and demanding his arrest.

On 16 November 2024, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) organized a protest rally in Chennai, pressing for two key demands, an increase in the Muslim reservation quota for education and employment to 7%, and the release of Muslim prisoners serving life sentences, in line with an election promise. The rally, held near Rajaratnam Stadium in Egmore, Chennai, was led by Mohammed Mubarak, the state president of the SDPI.

The event began with a welcome address from  SDPI state general secretary Nizam Mohideen, followed by the flagging off of the rally by State Secretary Ratnam. The opening speech was delivered by State General Secretary ASA Umar Farooq, Ahmed Nawavi, Abubakar Siddiqui, and Najma Begum also spoke during the event

They were joined by special invitees, including former Tamil Nadu Minister and AIADMK member D. Jayakumar, Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Party President and MLA T. Velmurugan, May 17 Movement Coordinator Thirumurugan Gandhi, and several other political leaders.

During the rally’s public meeting, Nellie Mubarak, the SDPI’s state president, strongly advocated for the increase in the Muslim reservation quota from 3.5% to 7%, urging the Tamil Nadu government to implement this as open, rather than closed, reservation. He called for legal amendments to allow Muslim communities to compete within the backward category to achieve social justice. Mubarak also demanded that the government issue a white paper on the benefits of reservation for Muslim minorities and conduct a caste-wise census to ensure fair distribution of resources.

Addressing the issue of Muslim prisoners, Mubarak pointed out that many Muslim have been incarcerated for 10 to 28 years, with some still awaiting release despite the recommendations of Justice N Adinathan’s committee. He criticized the DMK government for delaying the release of these prisoners, despite the government’s prior promise to free them. Mubarak further highlighted that 26 Muslim inmates are only granted parole intermittently, with their release periods being reduced, causing further distress to their families.

Participating in the rally on behalf of AIaDMK Organizing Secretary D. Jayakumar criticised the DMK government for not supporting the muslims who have backed them in elections and even after the MP’s who were sent from tamil nadu have not raised any voices supporting the muslims and urged the DMK to instead of fociing solely on TASMAC liquor sale simplement the promises that they made during 2021 elections.

Speaking at the SDPI rally, Panruti MLA T. Velmurugan sparked controversy with his remarks, comparing the banned terrorist organization PFI to the Indian armed forces. He stated, “Today, many of the top officers in the police department are new, but for 14 years, we have witnessed injustice, lawlessness, and atrocities in this state. In this struggle, the SDPI party and the former Popular Front of India have stood with me like an Indian armed forces. I have participated in numerous grand marches organized by the Popular Front of India, which is a key affiliate and friendly organization of the SDPI. Alongside the Tamil Nadu Police, it is the SDPI and the Popular Front of India that act as the real force like CISF, defending law and order and dedicating their efforts, even their lives, to serving the common people. For fascist BJP, they can be seen as militant or they can be seen as a movement challenging the state. On that basis, the SDPI rally should not be viewed with the same eyes as the fascist Bharatiya Janata government”

Panruti MLA T. Velmurugan stated that he would take responsibility for the actions of the Islamic fundamentalist group ‘Popular Front of India’ (PFI) and assured that they had not harmed the public. He also remarked that officials were hesitant to grant permission for the rally, adding that such caution was, in his view, justified.

Thirumurugan Gandhi, a Dravidian sympathizer and the leader of the May 17 Movement, also spoke at the rally, condemning the DMK government. He indirectly criticized the DMK for resembling the fascist policies of the central government, claiming that the party had failed to fulfill its promises to the Muslim community. Gandhi warned that if the DMK continued to neglect these promises, they would have no choice but to protest against them.

The event concluded with calls for immediate action by the Tamil Nadu government to address these long-standing issues.
