A speech delivered by a functionary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) during a memorial event in Kumbakonam has sparked controversy after a video of the remarks went viral on social media.

The event was reportedly held in front of the Thirumangalakkudi mosque near Kumbakonam to commemorate those killed in the ongoing Iran war. According to local reports, the gathering took place without prior permission from authorities. During the event, Amudhan Duraiarasan delivered a speech in which he made a series of remarks targeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In his speech, Duraiarasan said: “The people who are ruling the world today, the world has fallen into the hands of people who behave like religious fanatics and like savage animals. Because of them, the world is getting shattered and destroyed today.
A destructive cannibalistic fanatic, Narendra Modi, is ruling India in the same way. No less than him, another cannibalistic fanatic, a mentally ill man and the peak of madness, is ruling another country, that is Donald Trump.”

He continued, “Beyond being a destructive cannibalistic fanatic, this Trump is a terrible human being who finds pleasure in killing people here. And Narendra Modi, a destructive man who survives by depending on America and Israel – there are no leaders in this world who question him. A great leader who questioned such a cannibalistic fanatic was Saddam Hussein.”

Duraiarasan further alleged: “This Narendra Modi will never stand for us. He is a fascist terrorist. He is against Muslims. He is against Dalits. But it is important to understand how the masses are viewing this struggle. How did Narendra Modi become the Prime Minister of this country? Before him there was Advani.”

He also claimed that foreign powers had influenced Modi’s rise to power: “But powerful nations sidelined Advani and planned that Narendra Modi should become the Prime Minister of India.
Countries of dominance like America and Israel planned that Narendra Modi should become the Prime Minister. Why did they plan this? Because in Gujarat, in the Godhra train incident, this destructive cannibalistic fanatic Narendra Modi blew up the train and burned alive thousands of our Muslim brethren.”

Referring to a past media interview, Duraiarasan said: “At that time, when Narendra Modi was asked in an interview by the newspaper Reuters, that destructive Narendra Modi, that dog said: ‘You are travelling in a vehicle. What is your response to the riots that happened in Gujarat? Do you regret it?’ the journalist asked.”

He added: “Then this destructive Narendra Modi – the cannibalistic fanatic, the fascist terrorist who is ruling this country today said: ‘If you are travelling in a vehicle and a dog suddenly comes under the vehicle and dies, wouldn’t you feel sad?’ Thus, this destructive Narendra Modi, who compared the Muslim minority people of this country to a dog, is ruling the nation today.”

In the concluding part of his speech, he stated: “If today this destructive cannibalistic fanatic, fascist terrorist Narendra Modi has become the Prime Minister of this country, then the one who gave that opportunity to this dog was Bahadur Shah, the Islamic emperor who once ruled this country. The real owners of this land are the people here.”

The video of the speech circulated widely across social media platforms following the event.

On 8 March 2026, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan participated in a memorial event organised by the Tamil Nadu Shia Muslim Jamaat in honour of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In a post shared on social media, Thirumavalavan said he had attended the programme and delivered a speech at the remembrance event held for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whom the organisers described as the leader of the Islamic Ummah and a martyr.

The memorial meeting was conducted under the auspices of the Tamil Nadu Shia Muslim Jamaat, with participants gathering to pay tribute and reflect on Khamenei’s legacy.

Speaking to the audience, he said, “On behalf of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, I offer my heartfelt and brave tribute to the late leader, the martyr, Khamenei. When I received the news that he had been assassinated, I was deeply shocked. I did not know what to do, I was left bewildered. Then a call came from brother Bashir Ahmed. He said, ‘A protest march has started on Anna Salai, on Peter’s Road – where are you?’ I said, ‘I am in Chennai, I am coming right away,’ and I left immediately and joined that protest and that rally. This reminded me of when Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was assassinated, I had immediately joined a protest march with Islamic comrades on Anna Salai here.”

He continued, “There is a trend on social media of mocking and ridiculing, ‘What does Thirumavalavan have to do with this?’ Those forces, which have been conditioned to think that if there is a problem for Muslims, only Muslims should fight; if there is a problem for Dalits, only Dalits should fight, they cannot understand that anyone with democratic thinking can raise their voice for the rights and lives of Muslims. It is natural to ask – ‘Why should I condemn the assassination of the Iraqi President? Why should I condemn the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Imam Khamenei?’ There is no dispute about that. But I have not built myself into a sectarian leader. I have not made myself someone who speaks only for a particular caste or only for a particular religion. I am someone who holds the conviction that wherever injustice is committed on this earth, wherever dominance raises its head, we must raise our voice against it to the best of our ability. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was a great hero who never knelt before American imperialism. He had the courage to say, ‘The American dollar may have value in every country of the world, but in my country, it is just paper.’ He said: ‘I need not fear you. I need not bow my head before you. There is no need for me to kneel at your feet to carry this crown.’ Even at the moment of kissing the hangman’s noose, he accepted it with a smile – that was Saddam Hussein, the great hero of Iraq. No one can deny that.”

He further said, “The courage to resist imperialism belongs not only to leftist parties or leftist countries – it also belongs to Iraq, it belongs to Iran. Those who demonstrated this are the makers of history, Saddam Hussein and Khamenei. Soviet Russia stood against American imperialism, and it broke apart. Cuba is a communist country that stood against American imperialism. Che Guevara stood against it. All of these are communists – firm in their opposition to imperialism. This is how we have studied politics. But those who believe in God, those who have spiritual faith, those who believe that ‘Allah alone is one’ – they too stand firm in opposing imperialism, just as firmly as the leftists. Presidents Saddam Hussein and Khamenei stand as witnesses before us to that fact.”

He continued, “It is on the basis that Viduthalai Chiruthaigal too will stand wherever imperialism is opposed – that is why, when not just Shia Muslims as a single faction, but the entire Islamic community as a whole stood united on Peter’s Road that day, Thirumavalavan also came and stood with them. Opposition to imperialism. Opposition to American arrogance. Opposition to American insolence. Intervening in every country. Interfering in internal affairs. Installing military bases in every country. Threatening nations of the world. As they please, in every country’s elections, getting their preferred people elected as Prime Ministers or Presidents. Creating internal disturbances and destabilising every country’s political stability under the name of ‘people’s revolution’ – all of these are the atrocities that American imperialism is committing today, with the arrogance that there is no one to question them, and the pride that there is no one to oppose them. ‘You should not buy oil from Russia. If you do, we will punish you. We will impose 50% tariffs. If you comply, we will reduce the tariffs.’ Now, permission for 30 days to buy crude oil from Russia – look at how they are puppeteering the Indian government. The courage to oppose American imperialism is not in India. It is not in the Indian Prime Minister. When we think about this, we feel nothing but deep anguish.”

He continued, “Who is he? We do not have the courage to ask – ‘By what authority do you decide from which country we should import crude oil, and with which countries we should make trade agreements?’ That courage existed in President Khamenei. It existed in President Saddam Hussein. This is the problem. The person who stood firmly against imperialism was Imam Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This is the first reason. The second reason: He approached Israel as his born enemy, in support of Palestine. He stood firm in the conviction that Palestine is the land that must exist on the world map, not Israel, and that he would oppose it until his last breath. Based on that position, he supported armed groups fighting against Israel – that is one of the charges against him. He supported Hamas. He supported Hezbollah. He supported the Houthi organisation. He stood by them, encouraged those forces, and was a major headache for Israel. He questioned Israel’s military might, and was always a great threat to Israel. Just as he was a threat to America, he was equally a threat to Israel – that is the second reason.”

He continued, “The third reason they give: Iran is manufacturing nuclear weapons and that must be stopped. If Iran manufactures nuclear weapons, it will lead the world to destruction. Therefore, they say it is not just about protecting Israel – we must protect all nations of the world, and that is why we are conducting strikes against Iran. But there is no evidence whatsoever that Iran was manufacturing nuclear bombs. The same accusation was made against the Iraqi President too – they assassinated him, dug through every corner, searched every depth, and nowhere could they find any equipment or facility for nuclear bomb production. They could not produce any evidence. It was a completely false accusation. Uranium is used in every country in the world to generate electricity – nuclear power plants are installed everywhere. Which country does not have a nuclear power plant needed for electricity generation? Which country does not have an atomic power plant? Is it only Iran? This is how they spread slander, build public belief, and create opinion against Iran. One of the war strategies, one of the imperialist conspiracies, is to first brand the dog as a rabid dog before killing it. That is one of the strategies they use to destroy Iran – accusing it of attempting to build nuclear weapons, saying ‘we are taking this action to stop that attempt.’ These are the accusations they make. The fourth reason: Iran is one of the foremost nations in crude oil production among the world’s resource-rich countries. They intervene in that trade and commerce through American imperialism – so that Iran does not become an excessively powerful empire. The view exists that they intervene with the intent of preventing that. These are all reasons. All of them are reasons. But fundamentally, the most important reason is that he was a great personality with the courage never to kneel before imperialism. This is what we must understand. On this basis, we must understand and approach Imam Khamenei’s stand.”

He further says, “‘I can do anything. I can infiltrate any country. I can enter your home and eliminate him.’ To that same degree, in India today, we are seeing fascists possessed by religious fanaticism entering the homes of leftists and shooting them. That is how Gauri Lankesh was shot and killed. Professor Narendra Dabholkar was killed. Kalburgi was killed. They entered their homes, attacked and assassinated them and there was no one to question this fascism.

In one country, religious fanatics freely carrying weapons can enter someone’s very home and assassinate them – this situation is rampant here. That is exactly what American imperialism has now done on an international scale – becoming an international thug, taking the position: ‘I can intervene in any country in the world. I can kill any president.’ This is the greatest shame and disgrace to world civilisation. ‘You cannot choose your next Supreme Leader, I will choose him,’ he says. How is this democracy? How outrageously arrogant is this political conduct? We feel anguished wondering – are there no countries in the world to condemn this? There is not a single person to say, ‘How can you say this?’ Therefore, no matter how powerful he may be, when what he has done is an anti-democratic act – we must stand on the side of Khamenei. We must stand on the side of Imam Ali Khamenei. It is the duty of people like us to take this message to the people. Comrades said, Sadiq said, ‘Our Imam Khamenei lived like the Prophet Ali and passed away like the Prophet Husain.’ Those who are the family successors of the Prophet – they have been encountering cruelties, violence, brutalities, and assassinations for generations, for the sake of the welfare of these people, for the welfare of the Islamic community. They call this Islamic terrorism. They call this fundamentalism. It was not the Islamic community that created Bin Laden – it was American imperialism. The actions of Bin Laden have no connection to Islam. It is the product of American imperialism – he himself created it, and he himself had to face that consequence. Islam as a religion did not create anything like that. It has nurtured brotherhood. It preaches love. It preaches the magnificent principle of building a society without discrimination on a global scale. Therefore, against American imperialism that is threatening nations of the world, the righteous struggle of courageous people – we can lead that from Indian soil too. We can turn it into a people’s war. Proof of that is the massive rally held two days ago on Peter’s Road, where tens of thousands of Muslims gathered in the open – I want to place that on record here. In such a field, the field of protecting democracy and justice, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal will always stand with you as a steadfast companion. We will stand. We will stand. With that, I thank you for the opportunity, offer my brave and heartfelt tribute to Ali Khamenei, and conclude.”

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief and I.N.D.I. Alliance MP Thirumavalavan has sparked a controversy after launching a scathing attack on ancient Tamil rulers, including the Chola, Pandya, Chera and Pallava kings, during a recent public address.

In remarks that have drawn sharp reactions, Thirumavalavan rejected the reverence traditionally accorded to Tamil monarchs and blamed them for what he described as the cultural and linguistic decline of Tamil civilisation.

“I have no respect for any king. I do not see anyone as some great power. It was in the time of those kings that this country became worthless, became Sanskrit-ised, became Hindutva-ised,” he said.

Extending his criticism, the VCK leader accused the ancient rulers of sidelining Tamil from its religious and cultural centrality.

“It was in the time when these Pandya kings, Chola kings, Chera kings, Pallava kings ruled that Tamil, which was in the sanctum sanctorum of the Tamil temples, was thrown out,” Thirumavalavan alleged.

He further claimed that Tamil rulers adopted what he called “northern-language” influences and Brahminical rituals at the cost of native traditions.

“The one who conducted sacrificial rites, the one who did yajnas, changed Tamil names and attached northern-language names behind their own names,” he said.

Questioning the very names of some of the most celebrated Tamil emperors, Thirumavalavan asked: “Is ‘Rajaraja’ a Tamil name? Is ‘Rajendra’ a Tamil name? They are all people who put northern‑language names on themselves, who were mesmerised by the northern language (Sanskrit), who were lost in the sacrificial rituals and yajnas of Brahmins.”

He concluded by asserting that despite their reputation, these rulers bore responsibility for cultural erosion.

“Whatever great ‘king of kings’ they may have been, I am someone who has understood that they were the ones who paved the way for the destruction of our Tamil and the destruction of our culture,” he said.

It is noteworthy that the Chola and Pandya dynasties presided over periods when Tamil literature, temple architecture, inscriptions, administration and overseas cultural influence flourished far beyond the geographical boundaries of present-day Tamil Nadu.

The seems to also mark a shift in Thirumavalavan’s rhetoric. After blaming Sanatana Dharma, BJP and the RSS for everything under the sun, the MP has now turned his criticism towards kings who reigned over a millennium ago.

If the use of names such as “Rajaraja” and “Rajendra” is cited as evidence of cultural betrayal, one wonders whether contemporary political names like Karunanidhi, Stalin, Udhayanidhi, Dayanidhi and Kalanidhi (names from the DMK’s first family) would qualify as Tamil by the same standard.

A private helicopter tourism operator has accused a sitting VCK legislator of harassment and extortion, prompting the company to approach Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M Appavu with a formal complaint seeking action.

Aero Don, a tourism helicopter company operating joy rides from Kovalam near Chennai, said its CEO Nisha submitted a petition at the State Secretariat alleging that Thiruporur VCK MLA SS Balaji had repeatedly threatened the company and demanded money, despite the service having obtained all statutory approvals. The company said the helicopter service was inaugurated by MSME Minister Tha Mo Anbarasan after securing clearances from the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the district administration.

Speaking to the media, Nisha said the helipad and operations were established strictly in accordance with DGCA and Ministry of Civil Aviation norms, including mandatory intimations to the district collector and local authorities. She alleged that despite full compliance, the MLA had been “continuously creating problems” for the company and pressuring it for payments.

According to Nisha, the harassment escalated after the company refused to pay a bribe. She stated that the MLA made remarks suggesting that a private company was unfairly profiting and subsequently used his influence to create obstacles. The company further alleged that during the Pongal festival last year, the helicopter operations were sealed after the MLA complained to the district administration. Aero Don said it remained shut for nearly a year and resumed operations only after restarting the entire approval process from scratch and obtaining fresh clearances from the DGCA and the district collector.

Nisha also alleged that local disturbances were orchestrated, outsiders were brought in, and the company premises were locked without prior notice. She said these events forced the company to directly approach the Assembly Speaker, who, according to her, assured that the matter would be looked into. The company has sought disqualification proceedings against the MLA, citing alleged abuse of power and repeated intimidation.

Responding to the allegations, MLA S.S. Balaji denied wrongdoing and claimed his concerns were rooted in public safety. He said residents in his constituency were afraid of the helicopter operations and questioned whether the pilot held a valid licence, when the helicopter was manufactured, and whether proper safety certifications had been disclosed. The MLA said raising such questions in the interest of public safety was being misrepresented as harassment with political motives.

Balaji further stated that while tourism activities were welcome, authorities must ensure that all safety norms were strictly verified before permitting helicopter joy rides, especially in residential and coastal areas.

At an event held on 8 January 2026, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thirumavalavan made remarks targeting actor Vijay and former VCK functionary Aadhav Arjuna, targeting Arjuna’s decision to leave the party and join Vijay’s newly launched political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

Addressing party members, Thirumavalavan said that for over three decades he had guided and mentored leaders within the VCK and taught them the principles of Ambedkarite politics and party organisation. He questioned the decision to leave the VCK in favour of a party newly formed by a film actor, stating that Vijay lacked political experience and was only beginning to learn politics.

Thirumavalavan said, “For 35 years, I held your hand and guided you, but you’re leaving me, Thirumavalavan, who taught you politics, the one who taught you how a party should function, and suddenly someone who’s very popular in the film industry has started a party, and you think you can go with him? He doesn’t have your experience. He’s in kindergarten. In this party, I’ve already nurtured you, made you a PhD. You went and said that a boy in kindergarten is your leader. If you say that a child studying in LKG is your leader, then all these years you spent doing your PhD are meaningless, the doctorate you earned is meaningless. He doesn’t even have the experience you have. He’s only now going to learn politics. Now you go there and teach him; the disciples have to teach the leader. Here, each and every one is growing into a leader.”

A meeting organised by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) at Thirupparankundram on 22 December 2025, which was announced as a protest, effectively took the form of a public political rally, drawing attention for its use of religious symbolism and charged rhetoric amid the ongoing Deepam-related dispute in the region.

At the event, VCK president and DMK–Congress ally Thol Thirumavalavan, a Lok Sabha MP, was ceremonially presented on stage with a Vel and a crown by party functionaries from Madurai southern and suburban districts. Videos and reports from the meeting showed cadres raising slogans against what speakers repeatedly described as “Sanatana forces,” with chants calling to “chase them away” and references to confronting “Sanatana gangs” and “religious extremist groups.” Speakers emphasised that the Vel was being invoked not as a religious object associated with divine worship of Murugan, but as a political symbol representing social justice, caste annihilation, equality, and resistance to what they termed oppressive structures.

The symbolism and rhetoric drew particular attention given the tense backdrop at Thirupparankundram, where Hindu groups have been mobilising to demand implementation of court orders permitting access to the hill and the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam. The VCK rally took place amid heightened political activity around the issue, with competing claims and protests over religious practices and access rights in the area.

The event also revived scrutiny of Thirumavalavan’s earlier public statements on Murugan and the idea of “Tamil Kadavul.”

In a previous speech, he had questioned the political use of Murugan’s identity, saying that portraying Murugan as exclusively a “Tamil god” or framing religious symbols around electoral mobilisation amounted to vote politics. He had argued that such narratives could entrap people in divisive political strategies rather than addressing substantive social issues.

In a clipping that has been going viral on the internet, he says, “At some point in time there may have been a ‘Tamil god’; there may be history about a Tamil god. we were told that story of two people, elder and younger brothers, fighting over a mango. Those two are elder and younger brothers. They were both born to the same father and mother. Even if that father had two wives or three wives, still two children were born. Are we now going to call one a Tamil god and the other a Hindi god? If we say only ‘Murugan’ is the Tamil Kadavul (god) and give a holiday for Thaipusam, will all of us as Tamils suddenly be able to hold our heads high? All this is for votes. If we go into that net, if we go on that basis, we will get caught in their net. Even if we say, ‘We are coming to worship Tamil god Murugan,’”

Against this backdrop, observers noted the contrast between Thirumavalavan’s earlier scepticism toward religious symbolism in politics and the prominent display of the Vel and crown at the Thirupparankundram meeting, which was framed by party speakers as a political act of resistance rather than religious devotion.

What was supposed to be a protest meeting turned out to be a public meeting of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi in Thirupparankundram on 22 December 2025.

The meeting witnessed a striking display of religious symbolism, with party president and DMK-Congress ally Lok Sabha MP Thol Thirumavalavan being ceremonially presented with a Vel and a crown on stage amid charged slogans targeting what speakers described as “Sanatana forces.”

As per reports and videos circulating in news media, VCK functionaries reportedly presented the Vel not as a religious symbol of divine grace associated with Murugan, but as a political emblem representing social justice, caste annihilation, and equality. The cadre repeatedly declared that the Vel was meant to “drive away Sanatana forces” and protect social justice, drawing loud applause and slogan-chanting from the crowd.

During the event, VCK leaders from the Madurai southern and suburban districts took turns presenting the Vel and a crown to Thirumavalavan. The people were heard chanting of “We will chase them away” and references to confronting “Sanatana gangs” and “religious extremist groups” echoed through the gathering.

The slogans raised at the meeting included calls to “chase away” groups described as Sanatana or religious forces, particularly in and around Madurai. References were also made to Murugan’s Vel as a “victorious weapon” aimed at opposing these forces, with speakers asserting that it symbolised resistance rather than worship.

The rhetoric drew attention in the context of the ongoing dispute at Thirupparankundram, where tensions have been high over access to the hill and the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam. The VCK meeting was held amid heightened political mobilisation by Hindu groups demanding implementation of court orders related to temple access and ritual practices in the area.

Thirumavalavan, who has previously made public statements critical of Sanatana Dharma and Hindu religious structures, has now seemingly picked up the Vel to latch on to the ongoing issue.

A member of Hindu Munnani on Monday, 22 December 2025, accused the Tamil Nadu government and the police of acting in a discriminatory and “anti-Hindu” manner after permission was denied for a protest demanding implementation of a court order allowing the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam atop the Thirupparankundram hill.

Addressing the media, the Hindu Munnani functionary said the organisation had submitted a written request to the police two days earlier seeking permission to hold a peaceful democratic protest at Thirupparankundram, the first abode of Murugan, urging authorities to facilitate the lighting of the Deepam at the hilltop Deepathoon.

“We were given a letter yesterday stating that permission was refused,” he said.

The speaker alleged selective approval by the authorities, pointing out that on the same issue, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi had been granted permission to hold a demonstration at Palanganatham. “Today, Thirumavalavan’s VCK was allowed to conduct a protest on the Thirupparankundram issue. But for Hindu Munnani, permission was denied for a protest on this very same matter,” he said.

Questioning the government’s claims of neutrality, the Hindu Munnani representative said, “This government calls itself a secular government and a Dravidian model government. But in a completely one-sided manner, permission has been given only to VCK, which is part of the INDI alliance, while denying Hindu Munnani the right to hold a democratic protest. We strongly condemn this.”

Referring to judicial proceedings, he said Hindu Munnani had been repeatedly demanding that the order of the Madurai Bench of the High Court permitting the lighting of the Deepam be implemented. “Despite our continuous struggle, the government has not acted on that judgment. On the issue of lighting the Deepam at the top of the hill, they have neither clarified their stand nor taken any action,” he stated.

The speaker further claimed that while members of another community were granted permission to conduct their sandhanakoodu programme, Murugan devotees were being prevented from accessing the hill. “Yesterday, those from the ‘other side’ were given permission for their sandhanakoodu event. But devotees who want to go up to the Kasi Viswanathar Swami shrine above are being told they will not be allowed,” he said.

He added that though authorities had announced that the pathway would be opened after noon, local residents had informed them that access was being facilitated only for those participating in the sandhanakoodu-related events. “This is entirely one-sided,” he alleged.

Accusing the State of favouring one religion over another, the Hindu Munnani member said the government was “functioning completely in support of minorities and against the Hindu community.” He questioned whether the ruling dispensation believed it no longer required Hindu support. “We don’t know if they think they don’t need Hindu votes, but permission has been continuously denied only to us,” he said.

He also alleged restrictions even on symbolic forms of protest. “We are not allowed to tie even a single flag or place a microphone on the road, while VCK is conducting what is effectively a public meeting,” he said, asking whether the State was functioning as a democracy or a dictatorship.

Warning of political consequences, the speaker said, “In 2026, Hindu people will be alert. They will definitely teach an appropriate lesson. Through this protest, we are conveying that message.”

He concluded by asserting that Hindu Munnani would continue its agitation until the Deepam was lit atop the Thirupparankundram hill. “Until the Deepam is lit, Hindu Munnani will continue to struggle by uniting Hindus,” he said.

It is noteworthy that DMK-Congress ally Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) had announced a protest in Madurai on 22 December 2025, alleging that right-wing organisations are attempting to foment communal tensions in Thirupparankundram.

In a statement, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan said the protest was intended to safeguard communal harmony in the region. He stated that it was the responsibility of democratic forces to preserve the peaceful atmosphere in Thirupparankundram and prevent what he described as attempts by divisive and “Sanatana” forces to disturb communal harmony.

Referring to the ongoing Deepam-related dispute at Thirupparankundram, Thirumavalavan cited a court order concerning the issue and claimed that lighting a lamp on the Deepathoon located close to the mosque atop the hill could lead to unrest. He warned that such actions had the potential to escalate tensions in the area.

While permission was given for this protest by the DMK government, permission was denied for the peaceful Hindu Munnani protest that was only urging the government to implement the December 1 court order.

Villupuram VCK MP Ravikumar on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, published a detailed post on X expressing alarm over the rise in atrocities against Dalits in Tamil Nadu, calling the newly released National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2023 report “shocking” for the State. In his statement, he compared year-on-year data and said Tamil Nadu’s numbers stand out negatively even as neighbouring states have shown declines.

In his post, Ravikumar pointed out that Tamil Nadu recorded 1,921 crimes against Scheduled Caste (SC) persons in 2023, up from 1,377 cases in 2021 and 1,761 cases in 2022. He wrote that this continuous increase contrasts with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, all of which reported fewer such crimes in 2023 compared to the previous year.

According to the MP, the most disturbing figures relate to murder and sexual violence. He wrote that 74 Dalits were murdered in Tamil Nadu in 2023, and 135 Dalit women were raped, including 100 minor girls below 18 years of age. He added that Tamil Nadu is among only six states with such high numbers of sexual crimes against minor SC girls.

Ravikumar’s post also noted that 66 caste-related riots occurred in Tamil Nadu in 2023, placing the State among the top four nationally for such incidents.

The MP further criticised what he described as Tamil Nadu’s “high tendency” to dismiss SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act cases as false. According to him, only four states show this pattern, and Tamil Nadu is among them.

He highlighted delays in the judicial process, writing that while charge sheet rates in Atrocities Act cases match national levels, pendency before courts in Tamil Nadu is 37.7%, nearly double the national average of 21.2%. Ravikumar said that the State had 7,912 cases awaiting trial in 2023, including older and newly filed cases.

Citing NCRB numbers, he said courts dismissed 21 cases without investigation, convicted accused persons in only 115 cases, and acquitted 830 individuals in the same period. He emphasised that Tamil Nadu’s conviction rate in SC/ST atrocity cases is 12.2%, far below the national average of 31.9%, and significantly lower than states such as Uttar Pradesh (65.6%), Rajasthan (61.4%), and Bihar (30.1%).

Ravikumar wrote that 172 people were convicted in 2023, while 1,475 were acquitted, and claimed that accused persons in such cases receive bail “very quickly”. NCRB data shows 4,343 people were released on bail last year, while charge sheets were filed against 326 individuals.

Concluding his post, the MP stated that the data demonstrates the Tamil Nadu government has not taken adequate measures to prevent caste atrocities or ensure effective prosecution. He questioned whether the State would now take steps to address what he described as a “dire situation” reflected in national crime statistics.
