The claim that Tamil Nadu’s debt cannot be compared to Uttar Pradesh’s has emerged as the latest talking point in The News Minute’s Let Me Explain series. The episode asserts that those citing Tamil Nadu’s higher total debt are “misleading” the public and that, once “context” is applied, the State emerges not just fiscally sound but unfairly targeted by number-twisting critics.

A closer look at data however, reveals TNM’s propaganda style – selective framing, casual handling of numbers, and a typical leftist strategy – pre-empting legitimate scrutiny by declaring it “meaningless”.

Manufacturing a Victim Narrative

From the opening minute, the video frames the issue not as a fiscal debate but as a moral confrontation. Critics who point to Tamil Nadu’s higher debt are cast as peddlers of a “simple story of fiscal failure”, while the anchor positions herself as rescuing viewers from bad faith statistics.

Cross-state comparison itself is portrayed as inherently political and dishonest rather than a routine analytical tool used by the RBI, Finance Commission, PRS Legislative Research, and credit-rating agencies.

Instead of asking an obvious and legitimate question of whether Tamil Nadu’s debt trajectory comfortable and sustainable, the episode pivots to a defensive posture:

  • Tamil Nadu is richer, more diversified and socially advanced than Uttar Pradesh.
  • Debt is merely a “tool”, and richer states can naturally carry more of it.
  • Therefore, highlighting absolute debt numbers is either economic illiteracy or deliberate misrepresentation.

So, questioning policy is treated as questioning Tamil Nadu. The show abandons analysis and assumes the role of advocate.

Sloppy Numbers, Blurred Timelines

Any serious explainer must first get the numbers right. This is where the episode falters badly.

The video cites Tamil Nadu’s debt at ₹9.29 lakh crore and its GSDP at ₹35.6 lakh crore, producing a debt-to-GSDP ratio of about 26%. But ₹9.29 lakh crore is not the 2024–25 actual debt—it is the projected outstanding debt by March 2026, as per the 2025 budget.

At the same time, the GSDP figure used is from earlier projections. The 2024–25 budget places nominal GSDP closer to ₹31.6 lakh crore.

This mixing of future debt, with older, higher GSDP estimates artificially softens the ratio. The viewer is never told which year these figures correspond to, or that they are projections rather than actuals.

For Uttar Pradesh, the episode uses round figures – ₹9.03 lakh crore debt and ₹30.8 lakh crore GSDP – which align with 2025–26 projections, again without disclosure. Crucially, PRS data shows that UP, like Tamil Nadu, is also targeting fiscal deficits within the 3% FRBM band. That similarity is conveniently ignored.

For a show that repeatedly accuses politicians of “reading numbers out of context”, this casual blending of timelines and estimates is not a minor oversight, it undermines the entire argument.

One Yardstick for Tamil Nadu, Another for UP

The episode insists that debt must be judged relative to economic size, growth potential, and revenue capacity.

This is sound economics. But it is applied selectively.

Tamil Nadu is praised for keeping its fiscal deficit near 3% of GSDP and raising roughly three-quarters of its revenue from own sources.

Uttar Pradesh, meanwhile, is reduced to a caricature: a poor state surviving on Union transfers. There is no discussion of:

  • UP’s own FRBM compliance,
  • its recent capex push,
  • or improvements in tax effort—all documented in PRS and budget analyses.

If FRBM compliance and debt ratios are the benchmarks, they must apply equally. Instead, Tamil Nadu is acquitted under rules that UP is never even tested against. What is sold as “context” increasingly resembles narrative management.

Airbrushing Tamil Nadu’s Debt Risks

The video reassures viewers that Tamil Nadu’s debt ratio has “stabilised and is slowly declining”, citing projected marginal improvements from 26.6% to 26.4%.

What it does not mention:

Tamil Nadu’s debt-GSDP ratio had already climbed sharply before COVID-19, a trend flagged by the 15th Finance Commission as a medium-term concern.

Interest payments and committed expenditure viz, salaries, pensions, interest, consume a growing share of revenue, squeezing fiscal flexibility. This is documented in Tamil Nadu’s own budget papers.

COVID-19 is used as a moral alibi: borrowing limits were relaxed, states had to borrow, therefore post-2020 debt accumulation is treated as morally neutral.

But serious fiscal analysis does not end with COVID. It begins with what comes after structural costs, welfare commitments, and political competition. These are precisely the issues the episode avoids.

A neutral analysis need not claim Tamil Nadu is on the brink. It only needs to insist that being richer than UP does not exempt the State from scrutiny. The video refuses that nuance.

Declaring Scrutiny “Meaningless”

The choice of words is deliberate. The episode could have argued that cross-state debt comparisons are incomplete without context. Instead, it repeatedly calls them “meaningless” and “misleading”.

But comparisons of debt-to-GSDP, interest-to-revenue ratios, and contingent liabilities are exactly how fiscal stress is identified by bodies that monitor such risk. These metrics are not meaningless; they are starting points.

By declaring them meaningless, the show effectively immunises the Tamil Nadu government from benchmarking. That is not explanation, it is insulation.

Welfare, Outcomes, and the Cost Question

The episode’s strongest segment highlights Tamil Nadu’s genuine achievements: lower infant and maternal mortality, better health outcomes, higher school enrolment, and a higher HDI.

It argues, correctly, that these outcomes require sustained public spending, and that low debt elsewhere can signal under-investment rather than prudence.

But here again, nuance is abandoned. All spending is treated as productive and virtuous. There is no distinction between long-term, high-return investments, and recurring subsidies and politically timed schemes with unclear returns.

To even ask whether some schemes carry fiscal risk is implicitly treated as hostility.

Explanation or Advocacy?

There is a real and necessary conversation to be had about how state debt is discussed in India. Politicians routinely cherry-pick numbers. Citizens are rarely told what FRBM rules mean. Explain-style journalism can play a valuable role here.

But rebutting spin with counter-spin helps no one.

A good-faith explainer would clearly separate actuals from projections, apply the same benchmarks to all states, acknowledge both strengths and risks, and stop framing scrutiny as an attack on the State itself.

The News Minute episode gets one thing right: context matters more than raw numbers. But in its eagerness to defend Tamil Nadu from criticism, it slips into its own form of narrative control – framing legitimate fiscal questions into a morality tale of a misunderstood, virtuous government under siege. Explainers are meant to illuminate trade-offs and risks.

Regular readers of The Commune will recognise the pattern immediately – Let Me Explain is less about explanation and more about arranging the facts to suit a predetermined narrative.

In a comprehensive enforcement drive, Uttar Pradesh police conducted multiple operations throughout October 2025 targeting unlawful religious conversions. Authorities arrested numerous individuals accused of luring, coercing, and inducing people, particularly from vulnerable communities, to convert to Christianity through various deceptive tactics, including monetary incentives, false promises of employment and education, and psychological manipulation.

The crackdown involved the recovery of significant evidence, including Bibles, religious materials, and digital communications documenting conversion activities. Below are accounts of the 11 key incidents reported during this period.

#1 Four Arrested for Luring People to Religious Conversion in Jaunpur – 31 October 2025

In Kerakat, Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, police arrested Geeta Devi, Ranjana Kumari, Sonu, and Vijay Kumar for systematically luring members of the Sarki community and surrounding villages into converting to Christianity. Evidence recovered included photographs of Jesus Christ, copies of the Bible, books containing hymns in Bhojpuri and Hindi, and documents detailing church rituals and practices. Investigators also discovered extensive chat histories on social media platforms containing photographs, videos, and messages promoting Christianity and conversion tactics. All four accused were produced before the Jaunpur court and remanded to jail under Section 1961 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 351 of the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.

#2 Attempt to Convert Religion in Basti District – 28 October 2025

In Parasrampur, Basti District of UP, Ramdayal Sharma, aged 60, was arrested following a formal complaint from Ramanand, a resident of Tirukha village. The accused employed systematic tactics to exploit vulnerable members of the community through financial lures. Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and proceeded with legal action against the accused, who was formally charged under the provisions of the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.

The accused were actively converting members of the Hindu community through Christian missionary operations. When local resident Shantanu Tiwari protested these activities, the accused assaulted him with an iron rod, causing injuries. During the violent incident, the accused also snatched the mobile phone of Tiwari’s companion. The accused repeatedly visited the victims’ residence, offering financial incentives and actively persuading them to renounce Hinduism and embrace Christianity. This systematic pattern of harassment and inducement constituted unlawful conversion attempts. Police registered an FIR and initiated investigations into the coordinated conversion network targeting affluent Hindu families.

#6 Man and Woman Caught Attempting Illegal Religious Conversions in Agra – 15 October 2025

In Awas Vikas Colony, Jagdishpura, Agra, Achyut Kumar Devdi from Arunachal Pradesh and Prasanna Dhan from Jharkhand were arrested for conducting illegal religious conversion activities. The accused were distributing literature promoting Christianity and visiting residential areas to indoctrinate Hindu families. In Basahi Kala Village, Lalganj, Mirzapur, five individuals, including a pastor and a Christian missionary schoolteacher, were detained for orchestrating mass conversions disguised as healing prayer meetings. The accused exploited people’s medical vulnerabilities by claiming that prayer would cure illnesses and supernatural afflictions. Through a combination of inducements, threats, and religious propaganda, the accused successfully converted numerous villagers. The systematic manipulation of faith and health concerns constituted organized conversion activity. Police apprehended all five accused, including a staff member from a Christian missionary-run school, bringing the conversion network to light.

#9 Two Arrested for Converting People by Luring with Money in Chitrakoot – 10 October 2025

In Raipura, Chitrakoot District, Bharat Verma and Ramvishal Savita were arrested for conducting year-long systematic conversion activities targeting poor Hindu families in Ghunuwa village. The country saw several instances of crackdown on illegal religious conversion in the past month. This report details 15 separate incidents of alleged unlawful religious conversion occurring in the state of Uttar Pradesh throughout September 2025, as compiled from various Indian news sources.

The documented cases consistently follow a pattern, accusing evangelical Christian groups and individuals of systematically targeting impoverished, tribal, and Dalit communities. The methods of inducement include promises of miraculous healing, financial aid, job opportunities, and educational support.

In response, law enforcement agencies across multiple districts have taken action, made numerous arrests and registering cases under the stringent Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. These events have sparked significant legal and social discourse on religious freedom and coercion in the region.

#1 Mirzapur Conversion Racket Busted

On 30 September 2025, Mirzapur police uncovered a major inter-state religious conversion racket, arresting five individuals, including the alleged mastermind, Dev Sahayam Daniel Raj from Tamil Nadu. The gang was accused of systematically targeting poor, tribal, and underprivileged families, luring them with money, sewing training, and “healing prayer meetings” to convert them to Christianity. Investigations revealed the group had already converted nearly 70 people and was in advanced preparations to convert 500 more. A case was registered at the Ahraura police station, and a probe has been initiated to uncover the gang’s funding sources and wider network across state lines.

#2 Gorakhpur Women Arrested for Conversion

On 29 September 2025, in the Sahjanwa area of Gorakhpur, police arrested two women, Lakshmi Yadav and Roshni, for allegedly operating a religious conversion racket. The accused, a beauty parlor operator and her aide, were reported to have lured poor villagers by promising miraculous cures for illnesses and a better life through their spiritual practices. Lakshmi allegedly used a handkerchief in fake healing acts and offered hopes of jobs and money to convince people to read the Bible. Police raided a house in Sahjanwa, arrested the duo, and recovered religious materials related to conversion activities.

#3 Fake Healing Gatherings in Lucknow

In 28 September 2025, Nigohan police in Lucknow arrested a man named Malkhan for allegedly orchestrating religious conversions through fraudulent “Changnai Sabhas” (healing meetings). A convert since 2016, Malkhan used a hall on his farmland as a church to lure Dalit women and children from nearby villages. He performed staged healing acts, such as claiming to cure epilepsy, and offered money to persuade families to adopt Christianity. Using a WhatsApp group named “Yeshu Changnai Sabha,” he spread his influence and conducted baptisms. Police arrested him and launched an investigation into his financial sources and conversion network.

#4 Mass Conversion Attempt in Gorakhpur Village

On 28 September 2025, police intervened in a mass conversion attempt in Bhagoura village, Sahjanwa, Gorakhpur, where approximately 100 women had been gathered inside a house. Members of the Christian community were allegedly carrying out collective conversions at the location. Upon receiving information, law enforcement reached the scene and detained four to five individuals accused of orchestrating the event. An investigation was launched to determine the scope of the operation and the methods used to gather and influence the villagers, highlighting concerns over large-scale, organized conversion activities in rural areas.

#5 Charge Sheet in Kundawali Village Case

On 27 September 2025, police submitted a charge sheet to the court against four accused—Anju, Hridesh Kumar (alias Vicky Pastor), Neetu, and Surendra Pastor—in a conversion case from Kundawali village, Islamnagar. The incident, which occurred on 26 August 2025, involved individuals from Kasganj and Bisauli gathering villagers to conduct Christian prayers and lure them into conversion. Investigations revealed that Pastor Surendra, the alleged mastermind, had already converted over 200 people using financial temptations. The accused pressured villagers by repeatedly visiting their homes and conducting prayers, leading to about 30 conversions before police action was taken.

#6 Marital Fraud and Coercion in Firozabad

On 24 September 2025, in the Tundla area of Firozabad, a case was registered against Brijmohan (alias B.M. Masi) and his family members for allegedly forcing his wife, Jamuna Devi, into religious conversion following a fraudulent marriage. The complainant stated that 11 years after marrying under Hindu rituals, she discovered her husband had concealed his Christian identity. She accused him of assaulting her for worshipping Hindu deities, forcing their daughters to participate in Christian practices, and promising benefits like free education and foreign money if they converted. Police have begun an investigation into the assault and forced conversion allegations.

#7 Tension Over Conversion Gathering in Basantpur

On 22 September 2025, tension erupted in Mohad Ward, near the Shivnath River in Basantpur, Chhattisgarh, when 15-20 people from the Christian community gathered for prayers. Local villagers opposed the gathering, alleging it was a religious conversion meeting intended to lure people into Christianity. The situation required police intervention from the Basantpur police station. The matter was ultimately resolved on the spot through counseling and dialogue, preventing further escalation. This incident underscores the social friction and communal sensitivities surrounding conversion activities in the region.

#8 Eight Arrested in Hardoi for Inducements

On 22 September 2025, in Bhauptuwa village, Adampur, Hardoi, police arrested eight individuals, with Lal Singh as the main accused, for allegedly attempting forced religious conversions. Based on a complaint, it was revealed that the accused organized a gathering where candles were lit, prayers were conducted, and religious texts, including copies of the Bible, were distributed. The villagers were reportedly enticed with promises of monetary benefits and free medical treatment in exchange for converting to Christianity. Cases were registered under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.

#9 Phoolpur Gathering Targets Hindu Deities

On 21 September 2025, in Baudai village, Phoolpur, police registered a case against 12 named individuals for allegedly using a religious gathering to lure people into Christianity while making offensive remarks against Hindu deities. The meeting, held under the guise of “Changnai Sabhas” or fake healing prayers, was intended to convert members of the local Hindu community. The accused, including Santosh, Ram Ashray, and others, were charged under relevant legal sections. This case highlights the use of derogatory statements against indigenous faiths as a alleged tactic in conversion efforts, further inflaming religious sentiments.

#10 Agra Racket Lured People from Multiple States

On 19 September 2025, Agra police arrested Rajkumar Lalwani and eight others for allegedly running a large-scale religious conversion racket from his home in Kedarnagar, Shahganj. Lalwani lured people from states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra under the pretense of providing treatment or solving financial problems. Participants were reportedly subjected to conversion rituals involving meat and blood, and later taken to large prayer gatherings in Ambala. Each Sunday, large meetings were held at an ashram for the converted individuals. Lalwani was remanded to jail, and investigations, including warrants for other accused, continue.

#11 Illegal Church Preyed on Dalits in Phoolpur

On 19 September 2025, in Baudai Katauta village, Phoolpur, Prayagraj, an illegal church was found to be luring poor Dalit villagers with promises of money and other inducements. The church, connected to an entity called the “Changaai Sabha Agriculture School,” was also allegedly holding seminars to influence people against Hinduism. Police questioned two individuals involved and recorded their statements as part of an ongoing investigation into the forced conversions. This incident highlights the specific vulnerability of economically and socially marginalized groups to such alleged conversion activities.

#12 Shahjahanpur Couple Ran Long-Term Racket

On 16 September 2025, Shahjahanpur police arrested a couple, Harjeet Mashi and Sunita Mashi, from the Sidhauli area for allegedly running a long-term forced conversion racket. The duo reportedly lured locals by offering cures for illnesses and financial benefits, pressuring them to adopt Christianity. During the arrest, police recovered religious literature meant for influence and evidence of monetary support from various trusts. The accused were presented in court and sent to jail after cases were registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Uttar Pradesh anti-conversion law.

#13 Basti Church Used Money and Medicine as Bait

On 17 September 2025, in the Chandrashekhar Azad Nagar Ward of Babhnan, Basti, police arrested two individuals, Ram Nihor and Ramtej, for allegedly using a local church to coerce conversions. The accused were reported to have lured people, particularly Hindu women, to prayer meetings by offering money and medicines. Once there, they pressured them to adopt Christianity. A case was registered under the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Conversion Act 2021. The accused were arrested near Marvatia village, presented in court, and subsequently sent to jail.

#14 Farrukhabad Gang Used Online and Offline Methods

On 3 September 2025, Farrukhabad police busted a conversion gang led by Pradeep Mashi operating from the Kadri Gate area. The gang allegedly lured poor and distressed villagers to religious gatherings at Mission Hospital residences, promising to solve their problems and relieve poverty or ailments. Attendees were prohibited from Hindu worship, gradually pressured to convert, and subjected to rituals like tilak removal and meat consumption. The gang also conducted online prayer meetings via Google Meet under the name “Church of God.” Police arrested Pradeep Mashi and seized religious literature and documentation of conversion attempts.

#15 Unauthorized Prayer Meeting in Basti

On 1 September 2025, in the Rani Pokhara Mohalla, Basti, police registered a case against four individuals—Harihar Yadav, Ambika Prasad, Shiv Shankar, and Durgavati—for organizing an unauthorized prayer meeting. The gathering was allegedly held under the pretext of a religious event to pressure locals, particularly from scheduled castes, into adopting Christianity. The police intervention prevented the meeting from proceeding further, and an investigation was launched to ascertain the full intent and activities of the accused, marking one of the first such reported incidents in the state for the month.

The National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) “Crime in India 2023” report has revealed stark regional disparities in crime statistics, with Communist-ruled Kerala recording the highest crime rate in the nation while Uttar Pradesh maintained a crime rate significantly lower than the national average.

Kerala registered an alarming 1,631.2 crimes per lakh population, the highest among all states and nearly five times the national average of 335.3. This places the southern state at the top of India’s crime chart, followed closely by Delhi among union territories with 1,602 cases per lakh population.

In contrast, Uttar Pradesh, despite reporting the highest absolute number of crimes against women at 66,381 cases, demonstrated a significantly lower crime rate of 58.6 cases per one lakh female population compared to the national average of 66.2. When considering overall crime metrics, Uttar Pradesh’s crime rate stood at 335.3 per lakh population, well below the national average of 448.3.

The data shows Uttar Pradesh ranked 13th among 28 states when measured by crime rate against women and 17th when compared to all 36 states and union territories combined. Several states reported substantially higher crime rates than Uttar Pradesh, including Telangana (124.9), Rajasthan (114.8), and Haryana (110.3).

Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna attributed the state’s relatively better performance to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s zero-tolerance approach to crime. “The high case numbers reflect the size of the state, but the lower crime rate suggests that increased police visibility, targeted safety schemes, and dedicated helplines are mitigating the per-capita risk,” Krishna stated.

The state government credits initiatives like Mission Shakti, which focuses on women’s empowerment and safety through helplines, fast-track complaint redressal, and awareness drives, for the improved metrics. Authorities argue that the relatively lower crime rate also indicates growing confidence among women to report crimes that previously went unregistered.

The NCRB data breakdown shows that most crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh were committed by known individuals, with domestic violence comprising 34% of cases. Other significant categories included assault on women with intent to outrage modesty (20%), rape cases (8%), and cybercrimes against women (9%).

Beyond the Uttar Pradesh-Kerala comparison, the report highlighted concerning trends elsewhere. Delhi recorded a sharp decline in conviction rates, dropping from 87.8% in 2022 to 78.1% in 2023. Bengaluru reported the lowest chargesheeting rate for kidnapping cases among metropolitan cities at just 3.8%, with 1,139 of the 1,203 kidnapping victims being children.

Nationally, the report showed significant improvements in security parameters, with cases of extremist violence dropping sharply from 446 in 2022 to 163 in 2023. Jihadi terrorism cases fell by 87%, while Left-wing extremism declined by over 44% and North-East insurgency by 61%.

The contrasting pictures presented by Kerala’s high crime rate and Uttar Pradesh’s below-average statistics underscore how population scale and regional governance approaches influence crime patterns across India’s diverse states.

A private school in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, has come under intense scrutiny after allegations surfaced that young Hindu students were forced to write the phrase “I Love Muhammad” as part of an art competition. The incident reportedly took place in the Sadarpur area of the city at Amar Bapu Shiksha Niketan School. Parents raised the complaint with authorities after children disclosed the matter at home, prompting Hindu organizations, including the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), to intervene. Following their complaint, police registered an FIR against three individuals, including the school manager, and have launched a thorough investigation.

Background and Escalation

This controversy in Sitapur emerges amid ongoing tensions in Uttar Pradesh over similar incidents, which began in Kanpur and subsequently spread to cities such as Bareilly and Mau. Last Friday, violent protests erupted in Bareilly after Friday prayers, leading to the arrest of eight individuals, including Maulana Tauqeer Raza, and detention of over 40 others. In Mau, hundreds of youth staged protests with slogans, prompting strict administrative action.

The Sitapur incident, involving children in a school setting, has added further pressure on state authorities to act swiftly. Reports indicate that the posters created by students were reviewed by teachers, and parents became aware only after the students returned home. The FIR names the school manager, village head, and other unidentified teachers.

Tensions Across Districts

Barabanki: Faizullaganj village, near Lucknow, witnessed unrest after a banner displaying “I Love Muhammad” was torn down by a local watchman, Dhanni. The incident drew crowds from both communities, leading police to intervene. Eight individuals were arrested for taking out a procession in protest. A significant police presence remains in the area.

Mau: Following Friday prayers, residents reportedly organized a procession in the Nai Bazaar area, chanting “I Love Muhammad”. Police dispersed the crowd using batons, and footage of the event circulated on social media.

Varanasi: Police arrested seven individuals and a juvenile from Sigra and Lallapura areas, allegedly for organizing an unauthorized procession with “I Love Muhammad” posters and banners, reportedly aimed at disrupting communal harmony.

Muzaffarnagar: At least five people were arrested for putting up objectionable stickers and pamphlets. District Magistrate Umesh Mishra imposed prohibitory orders, banning any procession without prior permission. Religious leaders have urged citizens to maintain peace and communal harmony.

Bareilly: Authorities indicated that the recent violence was pre-planned. Investigations have implicated local politicians in the unrest. Deputy Inspector General Ajay Kumar Sahni stated that those disrupting peace would face action under the Goondas Act and National Security Act (NSA). Security forces, including police, PAC, and paramilitary personnel from 15 districts, have been deployed to maintain order. Over 500 individuals are being identified through CCTV footage and video evidence, and several are already in custody, including Maulana Tauqeer Raza, president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council. District Magistrate Avnish Singh confirmed that schools, colleges, and businesses are operating normally, but heightened security remains in place.

Police and administrative authorities have urged citizens not to pay attention to rumours circulating on social media. Strict action has been promised against those found spreading misinformation or attempting to incite unrest.

India has in recent weeks been rocked by violence triggered by the so-called “I Love Muhammad” campaign, which, far from being a spontaneous show of religious devotion, has revealed itself to be a calculated attempt to create communal fissures across multiple states.

What began as a small poster in Kanpur has mushroomed into riots, arson, and stone-pelting in Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and beyond. The evidence shows that this is not an isolated flare-up of sentiment but a coordinated Islamist effort, politically backed by certain opposition parties, to destabilize Hindu-majority states and embarrass the Indian state on the global stage.

How It Started

The playbook was first exposed in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on 4 September 2025. During Barawafat celebrations, an “I Love Muhammad” light board was installed not in a neutral space, but deliberately opposite the traditional route of a Hindu Ram Navami procession in Syed Nagar, an area with a long-established history of Hindu religious events. This was not an innocent act of faith; it was a calculated provocation, a “new tradition” imposed without any community consultation, designed to test and breach local sensitivities.

As police rightly intervened to maintain order, the instigators pivoted to a well-rehearsed second act: victimhood.
The very next day, unidentified Muslim youths attacked a Hindu locality in Rawatpur, damaging religious posters. Yet, when an FIR was filed for promoting communal hatred and vandalism, not for the slogan itself, a massive, coordinated disinformation campaign was launched

Gujarat Clashes: The Fault Line Explodes

The latest eruption came on 24 September 2025 in Bahiyal village, Gandhinagar district, Gujarat. A Hindu youth uploaded a WhatsApp status saying “I Love Mahadev” in response to the circulating “I Love Muhammad” trend. This ordinary expression of faith was enough to trigger violence. A Muslim mob vandalized his shop, attacked Garba celebrations, hurled stones, set vehicles on fire, and even damaged police jeeps. More than 200 were involved, 60 were arrested, and an entire village was thrown into panic.

The Spread of a Manufactured Campaign

The roots of this campaign lie in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where on 4 September 2025, during the Barawafat procession, organizers installed a giant light board with “I Love Muhammad” written on it in Syed Nagar. This was not a traditional practice; it was a unilateral innovation placed directly in the path of the Ram Navami procession route. Police quickly removed and relocated the board, but the damage was done. The next day, Muslim youths vandalized Hindu religious posters, and on September 10, cases were filed under IPC Section 153A for promoting communal hatred.

Instead of respecting the law, Islamist groups reframed the incident as an “attack on Muslims” and flooded social media with the hashtag #ILoveMuhammad. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, along with other leaders, amplified the narrative that Muslims were being criminalized simply for expressing love for their Prophet, deliberately concealing the violence that had taken place.

From there, the unrest spread:

  • Kashipur, Uttarakhand: 500 Muslims, mobilized by Samajwadi Party leaders Nadeem Akhtar, Anis Gandhi, and Danish Chowdhury, took out an unauthorized procession. Police were attacked, chased, and beaten; vehicles vandalized; seven arrested.
  • Kaushambi, UP: Children were caught chanting “Sar Tan Se Juda,” the jihadist slogan calling for beheading, during an “I Love Muhammad” march. Video evidence showed minors brandishing placards and chanting hatred.
  • Bareilly, UP: Over 1,000 Muslims gathered near Islamia Ground. What began as a rally turned into stone-pelting, vandalism, and even gunfire. Police resorted to lathicharge and tear gas; 10 policemen were injured.
  • Nagpur, Maharashtra: Congress minority leader Vaseem Khan led demonstrations in Mominpura, openly politicizing the slogan.
  • Hyderabad, Telangana: AIMIM workers staged protests framing the FIRs as “anti-Muslim persecution.”

Political Linkages and Subversive Strategy

The controversy has exposed direct political involvement. In Kanpur, police arrested Zubair Ahmed Khan, a dismissed constable turned Samajwadi Party worker, for circulating a provocative audio clip after Friday prayers, designed to mobilize mobs. His photos with senior SP leaders quickly went viral, giving the agitation a clear partisan shade.

If we analyze the sequence of the protests, we can identify six deliberate steps in this Islamist playbook:

  1. Create an emotional slogan – “I Love Muhammad” – seemingly harmless but loaded with identity politics.
  2. Mobilize through WhatsApp/social media – ensure mobs assemble instantly after Friday prayers.
  3. Confront police – provoke action, record videos of clashes.
  4. Internationalize the narrative – feed visuals to Amnesty, Human Rights Watch, and hostile foreign think tanks.
  5. Frame Hindus as oppressors – through critical race theory-style interpretations that cast minorities as “blacks” and Hindus as “whites.”
  6. Globalize Hinduphobia – present India as “Islamophobic” to UN forums, US Congress, and Western academia.

This is a classic case of weaponized narrative warfare, with Islamist networks, opposition parties, and foreign powers in sync.

A Threat to Indian Social Fabric

At its core, this campaign undermines India’s pluralistic balance. Expressing love for the Prophet is not the issue; the danger lies in imposing new traditions in mixed localities, deliberately ignoring sensitivities, vandalizing rival religious symbols, and then playing the victim card.

By chanting “Sar Tan Se Juda,” assaulting police, and vandalizing Hindu shops, the campaign is not about devotion, it is about intimidation. The Islamists behind it are creating something like an “Islamic Gen Z” radicalization wave, inspired by unrest in Nepal, and seeking to transform street protests into a nationwide anti-Hindu, anti-India movement.

Why It Must Be Resisted

The “I Love Muhammad” movement is dangerous because:

  • It weaponizes faith as a political tool.
  • It imposes unilateral traditions that breed conflict.
  • It normalizes extremist slogans like “Sar Tan Se Juda.”
  • It seeks international intervention against India.
  • It aims to guilt-trip Hindus while concealing violence committed by mobs.

The fact that this campaign has been endorsed by Islamist leaders, amplified by opposition parties, and supported through orchestrated violence proves that it is not a devotional slogan but a deliberate strategy of destabilization.

Last Word

The “I Love Muhammad” campaign is dangerous precisely because it is not about love. It is a political and subversive tool, inspired by global Islamist playbooks, aimed at disrupting India’s religious harmony and also the country’s political stability. It deliberately provokes, then feigns victimhood, and finally unleashes violence when confronted.

To counter this, the state must act firmly against all violence and vandalism, regardless of the perpetrator. But more importantly, the public must see through this charade. If left unchecked, “I Love Muhammad” could become the seed of a larger Islamist insurgency. True devotion never destroys harmony, it builds it. The “I Love Muhammad” campaign, however, has brought only arson, bloodshed, and division.

We must recognize that this is not a debate over religious freedom, but a deliberate and dangerous conspiracy to break India, one communal clash at a time. The stability of the nation depends on seeing this threat for what it is and rejecting its divisive agenda outright.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has released its decadal report on state finances, highlighting a sharp contrast in fiscal health across the country. While 16 states ended 2022-23 with revenue surpluses, 12 others posted deficits, with Tamil Nadu ranking second-worst after Andhra Pradesh.

UP Tops Revenue Surplus List

Uttar Pradesh led the surplus states, reporting a revenue surplus of ₹37,000 crore in 2022-23, shedding its “Bimaru” tag. Madhya Pradesh also joined the surplus list, marking a turnaround for another state historically considered economically weak.

Other major surplus states included:

  • Gujarat: ₹19,865 crore
  • Odisha: ₹19,456 crore
  • Jharkhand: ₹13,564 crore
  • Karnataka: ₹13,496 crore
  • Chhattisgarh: ₹8,592 crore
  • Telangana: ₹5,944 crore
  • Uttarakhand: ₹5,310 crore
  • Goa: ₹2,399 crore

Several northeastern states – Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim – also figured in the revenue surplus category. Of the 16 surplus states, at least 10 are governed by the BJP, which the report notes may reflect political stability’s role in fiscal health.

TN Among Worst Deficit States

On the deficit side, Andhra Pradesh posted the largest shortfall of ₹43,488 crore, followed by Tamil Nadu at ₹36,215 crore. Other deficit states included:

  • Rajasthan: ₹31,491 crore
  • West Bengal: ₹27,295 crore
  • Punjab: ₹26,045 crore
  • Haryana: ₹17,212 crore
  • Assam: ₹12,072 crore
  • Bihar: ₹11,288 crore
  • Kerala: ₹9,226 crore
  • Himachal Pradesh: ₹6,336 crore
  • Maharashtra: ₹1,936 crore
  • Meghalaya: ₹44 crore

The CAG flagged that West Bengal, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab are increasingly dependent on Revenue Deficit Grants from the Centre to bridge gaps.

Central Assistance and Deficit Grants

In FY23, the Finance Commission allocated ₹1,72,849 crore in grants to states, of which ₹86,201 crore went specifically for revenue deficit financing. The biggest recipients were:

  • West Bengal: 16% of total grants
  • Kerala: 15%
  • Andhra Pradesh: 12%
  • Himachal Pradesh: 11%
  • Punjab: 10%

States Strengthening Own Revenues

Some states, however, have managed to fund most of their spending from their own tax and non-tax collections. The leaders were:

  • Haryana: 80%+ of revenue from own sources
  • Telangana: 79%
  • Maharashtra: 73%
  • Gujarat: 72%
  • Karnataka: 69%
  • Tamil Nadu: 69%
  • Goa: 68%

By contrast, northeastern states, Bihar, and Himachal Pradesh generated less than 40% of revenue internally, making them heavily reliant on central transfers.

Own Tax Revenue Patterns

The report further noted that six states – Haryana, Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu collected over 60% of their revenue from their own taxes.

Northeastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura recorded below 20% own tax revenue, underscoring their dependence on central support.

Other groupings included:

  • 60–70%: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Kerala
  • 50–60%: Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Chhattisgarh
  • 40–50%: Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttarakhand

Key Revenue Sources

The CAG identified major streams of state revenue as:

  • State GST (SGST)
  • Value Added Tax (VAT)
  • Excise duties on alcohol, petroleum products, and electricity (outside GST purview)

The three-member judicial committee, formed to investigate Sambhal violence, submitted its report to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 28 August 2025. The report, yet to be made public, will shed light on the reasons behind the November 2024 violence and is also expected to fix blame on the culprits behind the stir, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to many others.

The probe report has started evoking reactions, even before being put in the public domain. Vishnu Shankar Jain, senior advocate and one of the petitioners in the Sambhal case, said there was a coordinated plot to block the court-mandated survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) team, and this was done with active connivance and support from the ‘foreign forces’.

He stated that the ASI team found it very difficult to conduct the survey of the Mughal era mosque on 19 and 24 November last year, despite clear instructions from the Court. Claiming a foreign plot behind the Sambhal violence, he said that the attack on police personnel was pre-planned and done with an intention to eliminate the survey team, thwart the court order and stall any survey of the premises.

“Many disruptive and anti-national forces are active in Sambhal. The so-called vanguards of secularism should visit the city and see the ground reality,” he said. He further stated that the Shahi Jama Masjid used to be the Harihar temple in the past. It was demolished by the Mughal ruler Babar and then, in later years, was appropriated by the Muslim community, claiming it to be a mosque.

The three-member judicial committee, in its 450-page report, has also reportedly shared insights on the declining Hindu population in Sambhal in the post-Independence era. According to the report, during independence, Muslims and Hindus constituted about 55 per cent and 45 per cent of the population in the district, but currently, the Hindu population has declined to 15 per cent while the Muslim community has risen to 85 per cent.

Responding to these findings, Vishnu Som said that Sambhal has seen dramatic demographic change over the years and added that the Hindu community has been made to live under constant fear and also forced to live as ‘second-class citizens’ in the city.

In a high-stakes late-night encounter on 6 August, a notorious mafia gang member from Jharkhand, Ashish Ranjan alias Chhotu Singh, was gunned down by the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh in the Shankargarh area of Prayagraj.

The criminal, armed with an AK-47 and a 9 mm pistol, opened fire at the STF team when intercepted, prompting a retaliatory response that led to his death. Originally from J.C. Malik Road in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Ashish Ranjan was wanted in multiple murder cases and carried a reward on his head. Acting on a tip-off that he was planning a major crime near Shivrajpur Chauraha in Shankargarh, STF Inspector J.P. Rai and his team laid an ambush. When confronted, Ashish Ranjan attempted to flee while firing at the officers, narrowly missing several personnel. He was critically injured in the crossfire and later declared dead at the hospital. Weapons recovered from the scene included an AK-47, a 9 mm pistol, numerous cartridges, and a motorcycle.

Authorities confirmed his involvement in several heinous crimes and praised the STF’s swift action in neutralising the threat. In another operation, the police and SWAT team had an encounter with Naveed, the main accused in a robbery that occurred on August 4 in the Shikarpur area of Bulandshahr. Naveed was injured in the retaliatory firing and was arrested in a wounded condition before being shifted to the district hospital. Police recovered over Rs 2.11 lakh in cash, a pistol, live and empty cartridges, a backpack, and a motorcycle from his possession. Four of Naveed’s accomplices have already been arrested, and law enforcement officials recovered a total of Rs 6.98 lakh from the looted amount, marking a 100 per cent recovery in the case.
