Following Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) chief M. H. Jawahirullah, Nellai Mubarak, the state president of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), has strongly objected to the film ‘Amaran’. They accuse the film of portraying the Kashmiri Muslim community in a negative light, depicting them as terrorists. The movie is based on the real-life story of Major Mukund Varadarajan, who played a key role in the 2014 counter-terrorism operation in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir.

Despite receiving widespread praise from political figures such as TN BJP chief and former IPS officer Annamalai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, and Anbumani Ramadoss, the film has been starting to get criticism from some Dravidianist, now Muslim leaders have started to voice out.

Nellai Mubarak, the state president of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), met with the media in Chennai to express strong objections against the film ‘Amaran’. He accused the film of distorting facts and propagating the harmful narrative that Muslims, particularly those from Kashmir, are anti-national.

Nellai Mubarak said, “Regarding the recently released movie Amaran, the film team has said that they have filmed the story of late Mukund Varadarajan, a former Indian Army Major who died fighting for India as a biopic. The sacrifice of soldiers is immense and we sincerely respect any soldier’s sacrifice. But we strongly condemn the action taken by ‘Raaj Kamal Films’ and then Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin’s company intent to malign the minority Muslims and the struggling democratic forces in the name of making such film.”

The SDPI leader also condemned the film for misrepresenting the slogan ‘Azadi’, a historic symbol of national liberation and democratic struggle, by equating it with terrorism. At the same time, he stated that the film promoted ‘Jai Bajrangbali, a slogan associated primarily with groups like Bajrang Dal, as a patriotic battle cry. However, what he overlooked is that ‘Jai Bajrangbali‘ is also the actual war cry of the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles as well as the Rajput Regiment. Mubarak warned that such rhetoric, which could incite fear and hostility towards minority communities, is extremely dangerous.

Mubarak also rejected the film’s portrayal of Kashmiri women as “half-widows,” a depiction suggesting that their husbands had become terrorists and abandoned them. He described this as false, biased propaganda meant to manipulate public perception.

He argued that ‘Amaran’ is a direct sequel to ‘The Kashmir Files‘, both of which, in his view, spread misinformation and distorted the reality of the Kashmir conflict. He accused the film of furthering a political agenda that promotes division and hatred, while falsely casting certain communities as separatists in order to portray one side as heroes.

Mubarak denounced the film as part of the rising tide of anti-Muslim sentiment across the country and criticized Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister for endorsing a film that he believes fuels such hatred. He called on all democratic forces to raise their voices against films that promote divisiveness and called for ‘Amaran’ to be banned.

Nearly 60 hostel students were reportedly compelled to work barefoot in the midday sun as unpaid manual labourers to clean and prepare the Sivagangai District Sports Ground for welcoming DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin.

DMK scion and Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will officially open the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Cup at the Sivagangai district sports ground on 10 September 2024. Preparations for the event are underway, including cleaning and marking up the ground.

As part of the preparations, around 60 students residing in the district sports hostel have reportedly been required to take mandatory leave to assist with tasks such as cleaning the playground and setting up poles. This move has stirred controversy and caught the attention of local social activists.

A video showing these students working under the hot midday sun, carrying heavy iron poles in groups of four to five and some barefoot has gone viral on social media.

The footage has sparked strong criticism from social activists, who contend that employing children to set up poles and maintain tracks for a government event is deeply concerning and unacceptable. They have demanded strict actions against those responsible, stressing that such practices amount to child labour and should be condemned and addressed under the law.

On 10 September, Youth Welfare and Sports Minister Udayanidhi Stalin will be engaged in several activities across Sivagangai district. According to a press release from Cooperative Minister K. R. Periyakaruppan

• At 10:00 a.m., Minister Udayanidhi Stalin will inaugurate the Chief Minister’s Cup at the Sivagangai District Sports Ground.
• At 10:30 a.m., he will review government projects at the district collector’s office.
• At 1:00 p.m., he will inspect the Vadaku Velli Ambalam memorial in Nagarapatti and the Gandhi-Jiva Memorial Hall in Siravayal.
• At 4:30 p.m., he will oversee the distribution of sports equipment and welfare assistance at Alagappa University, Karaikudi.

Minister Udayanidhi Stalin is expected to arrive from Madurai at 9:00 a.m. and will be welcomed by the Sivagangai District DMK at Poovanthi.

Tensions between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have been escalating since the beginning of the year, largely due to Kollywood actor Vijay. The DMK, keen on maintaining its political standing, has displayed dissatisfaction with Vijay’s influence and extended party base via film career. Recent DMK general membership meetings across the state have seen top leaders indirectly criticizing the actor.

According to Dinamalar, DMK members have been instructed not to use party letterheads or visiting cards to procure tickets for Vijay’s new film, “The GOAT”. It is noteworthy that the film was released globally on 5 September 2024, against the backdrop of Vijay’s launch of his own political party, TVK. In Tamil Nadu, the film was given a special screening. The producer of the film Venkat Prabhu extended thanks to Udayanidhi Stalin, the DMK scion and Sports Minister, for his support.

Although there is no direct government pressure on the movie “The GOAT”, there are reports indicating that the DMK is exerting pressure on the TVK party concerning the organization of their state-level conference.

TVK officials commented that the film showcases actor Sivakarthikeyan’s rise in cinema while Vijay gracefully steps aside. They also noted that scenes honoring historical figures like Gandhi, Nehru, and Subhash Chandra Bose, as well as references to Vijayakanth, Rajinikanth, cricketer Dhoni, and Vijay himself, were included.

In response, DMK executives have stated that ticket bookings for the film across Tamil Nadu have been filled for up to five days in advance, with DMK members and their families frequently attending. To prevent misuse of party resources, members have been allegedly directed not to use party letterheads or visiting cards for ticket purchases. Additionally, DMK members have been advised against posting any criticism of Vijay’s film on social media.

AIADMK general secretary and Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu, Edappadi Palaniswami, has accused the DMK government of pressuring industries to sponsor the upcoming Formula 4 car race scheduled for August 2024 in Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority is set to host Chennai’s inaugural night Formula Four race. Initially planned for 9th and 10th December 2023 on the Theevuthidal outskirts, legal challenges sought to stay the race within Chennai city limits. Critics argued that the state government shouldn’t allocate 40 crore rupees to a private race lacking public benefit. Concerns about potential disruptions to a nearby government hospital and traffic were also raised. Postponed by Cyclone Michaung’s heavy rains in December, the alleged rescheduled race gained military clearance for June onward.

The upcoming Formula 4 event is expected to be held at Anna Road, Chennai, starting from the island chain through Black Stop Road and Anna Road, but it hasn’t been officially announced yet. Concurrently, AIADMK’s Edappadi Palaniswami criticized the DMK for allegedly coercing industrial sponsors involved in the race.

Edappadi Palaniswami, via his official X account, stated, “After writing an affidavit in the Madras High Court that they will not hold Formula Car Races in Chennai for two years, last week the Additional Chief Secretary of Youth Welfare and Sports Department has written an open letter to car companies in Tamil Nadu asking for ‘sponsorship’ to hold Formula Car Races in Chennai city.”

“According to reports, the sports department has also asked all the industries to provide the necessary funds either for the development of the racetrack or for the development of the infrastructure or sponsor through advertisement for holding specific events, the sponsor has been asked by the news. Various industry organizations are outraged by this compulsion of the DMK government,” he added.

“Already small and micro industries, ginning mills, spinning mills and other industries have been severely affected in Tamil Nadu, and the industry has been paralyzed due to the increased electricity tariff thrice after the DMK took over the government. It is reprehensible that the DMK government is using its power to insist on sponsoring the Formula Car race,” he added.

The 2024 Lok Sabha campaign of the DMK appears to be woven from the fabric of a fairy tale realm. As their leaders speak, they unabashedly fabricate their accomplishments, aiming to sway the uninformed masses. This time around, the DMK scion and Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development boldly asserted that Canada had adopted their morning breakfast scheme, attributing its success to his father MK Stalin. Furthermore, he claimed that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had recognized their endeavors.

DMK scion Udayanidhi Stalin, while campaigning in Omalur on 7 April 2024, in support of DMK candidate TM Selvaganapathi, highlighted several key achievements of DMK and made political observations on the opposition parties.

During his address at Omalur Bus Station, Udayanidhi emphasized the implementation of a breakfast program in government schools across Tamil Nadu, which has garnered attention and emulation from neighboring states like Karnataka and Telangana. Notably, he mentioned that even Canada, a wealthy nation, has taken note of and plans to adopt this initiative pioneered by the Dravidian model.

Udayanidhi said, “For the first time in India, a breakfast program has been introduced in government schools in Tamil Nadu. Seeing this, it has been introduced in the neighboring states of Karnataka and Telangana. There is a country called Canada, It is one of the wealthiest countries next to the US, Canada. The name of the prime minister of that country is Mr. Justin Trudeau, he is giving an interview on television four days ago, what does he say in it? In India, ‘There is a food program called the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Program in Tamil Nadu so that more children come to school, this program that gives importance to education, like the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Program in Tamil Nadu, I am going to introduce and expand this program in Canada’, like that they are introducing this program in Canada. This is called Dravidian Model Government. This incident attracted significant interest and went viral on social media platforms, as DMK scion and minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was misleading the public. Contrary to Udhayanidhi’s claims during his speeches and interviews, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau never specifically mentioned Tamil Nadu or credited the DMK or MK Stalin government. Instead, the official Canadian PM’s account stated that,”PM Justin Trudeau just announced the new National School Food Program to ensure kids, especially vulnerable kids, have access to healthy meals.”

Another falsehood circulated was the claim that the breakfast scheme originated under the leadership of MK Stalin’s DMK government in Tamil Nadu. However, this assertion proved to be untrue, as it was actually a recommendation put forth by Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, stemming from the New Education Policy report submitted as early as 31 May 2019.

In contrast to the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020 put forth by the Kasturirangan committee, the CM Breakfast scheme of Tamil Nadu, introduced by Stalin in the state assembly only in May 2022, commenced in Madurai on September 15 of the same year, coinciding with the birth anniversary of DMK founder CN Annadurai. The statewide expansion of this initiative was initiated later in Tirukuvalai, the birthplace of DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi, on 25 August 2023. It’s worth noting that the Liberal government in Canada had pledged to implement a similar program in 2021. The Breakfast Club of Canada, a non-profit organization, has been advocating for such a scheme for over 30 years. Therefore, there is no direct association between Tamil Nadu’s breakfast scheme and Canada’s, nor is the DMK government’s initiative regarded solely as its own innovation.

This mirrors a similar misinformation spread by the DMK regarding the authorship of the mid-day meal scheme, wrongly attributed to former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi instead of former Chief Minister K Kamaraj.
