A fresh political debate has erupted in Tamil Nadu after conflicting statements from senior Congress leaders regarding actor-politician Vijay’s recent interaction with the party high command.

According to a Thanthi TV report, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram confirmed that TVK president Vijay recently spoke to Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, adding fuel to growing speculation about political realignments ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Karti also claimed that Vijay’s engagement with the Congress dates back more than a decade. As per the report, Karti reportedly said that some years ago, Vijay wanted to become the president of the Congress youth wing suggesting that the actor’s political ambitions were long-standing.

Karti’s remarks were interpreted as an indication of possible outreach between the Congress and TVK.

Jothimani Counters: “Meeting Not New… But Not a Basis for Alliance”

Hours later, Congress MP Jothimani issued a contrasting statement, downplaying the political significance of Vijay’s interactions with senior Congress leaders.

She said Vijay was “not new” to the party and had even met Rahul Gandhi in 2010 to explore joining the Congress, though it did not materialise.

However, she cautioned against drawing political conclusions from recent meetings. According to her, conversations during personal or tragic moments such as the Karur stampede incident where leaders met Vijay “cannot be taken as the foundation for an election alliance.”

Jothimani stressed that the Congress remains firmly aligned with the DMK. She reiterated that the alliance is strong and longstanding, adding that social media speculation should not be mistaken for political signalling.

She said there was still considerable time for the 2026 election and that party decisions are “not made on the basis of online chatter.”

Alliance Signalling or Noise?

The contradictory remarks – Karti confirming the meeting and past interest, and Jothimani dismissing political implications come at a time when the Congress in Tamil Nadu is believed to be eyeing Vijay’s influence in Kerala and Puducherry.

In recent weeks, several state-level Congress leaders have reportedly urged the party high command to deepen engagement with TVK.

The DMK, meanwhile, has taken note of these developments. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s recent remark about the Congress’s “hand leaving” appeared to hint at unease within the alliance.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has reportedly begun organising a series of “Arputha Peruvizha” (Miracle Festivals) across Tamil Nadu as part of an effort to retain Christian support ahead of the next election cycle. The move follows internal assessments that a section of minority voters, traditionally aligned with the DMK–Congress alliance, may be drifting towards actor Vijay’s recently launched party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Christians and Muslims have historically backed the DMK-led alliance in the state. Their support played a significant role in the coalition’s sweep of 159 constituencies during the 2021 Assembly elections. However, officials said intelligence inputs submitted to the government after Vijay’s recent campaign in Nagapattinam, which drew heavy crowds, indicated a possible shift in Christian voting preferences. Women supporters at the event were seen carrying placards featuring both Jesus and Vijay, suggesting TVK’s outreach to the community.

In response, the DMK has reportedly rolled out Christmas-season campaigns aimed at reinforcing its hold over Christian voters. The first “Arputha Peruvizha” was held in Udhagamandalam (Ooty) under the Coimbatore zone, reportedly backed by former minister Senthil Balaji. Around 90,000 attendees from the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts are said to have taken part in the gathering, which featured special prayers led by prominent CSI pastors. The event was organised by George, the DMK’s Ooty city secretary and district planning committee member.

Buoyed by the turnout, party leaders have approved similar programmes to be conducted across all eight DMK zones – north, south, east, and west – through the Christmas period. According to party insiders, the DMK intends to work closely with influential Christian clergy to consolidate support and prevent any erosion of its traditional minority vote base.

Apart from this, M.K. Stalin met members of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC) at the Secretariat, where the delegation led by Archbishop Dr. George Anthonysamy submitted a memorandum outlining key concerns of the Christian community. The meeting, facilitated by Rev. Dr. Vincent Chinnadurai and attended by senior bishops, clergy, and state officials, highlighted issues such as exemptions for minority-aided schools under Section 19 of the Private Schools Regulation Act, extending welfare schemes like free textbooks and laptops to students in minority institutions, approval and staff fixation for English-medium sections in aided schools, political reservation for Dalit Christians, and MBC status for Christian Vanniyars. The Bishops appreciated the government’s commitment to social justice and minority welfare, while the Chief Minister assured full support and praised the Church’s contributions to education, healthcare, and social development.

Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is entering a volatile and transformative phase as speculations mount over a potential meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Thalapathy Vijay Chandrasekhar, the actor-turned-politician leading the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The anticipated interaction comes amid visible strains between the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), signaling possible recalibrations ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Rahul Gandhi’s Outreach To Vijay

In late September 2025, Rahul Gandhi’s call to Vijay after the Karur stampede sparked speculation about deeper political intentions. Although Congress leaders publicly described the gesture as humanitarian, the context and timing — following Gandhi’s call to CM M.K. Stalin — raised eyebrows across political circles. Vijay, whose party is widely regarded as a growing political force, remained silent after the exchange, fueling theories of back-channel interest between TVK and Congress.

Leaders within the state Congress have voiced growing dissatisfaction with their limited influence under the DMK-led alliance, which dominates the ruling Secular Progressive Front. Some have called for more equal power-sharing, with demands reportedly extending up to 50% of assembly seats and a stake in government formation.

Given Vijay’s considerable fan base in Kerala, Congress insiders believe that bringing him on board could boost the party’s prospects of returning to power in the state.

Cracks In The DMK-Congress Alliance

Recent developments in Tamil Nadu politics have revealed growing friction between the DMK and Congress, two long-standing allies within the Secular Progressive Alliance. Several visible cracks have emerged over the past months, pointing to deeper structural tensions in their partnership ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Seat-Sharing Demands And Power-Sharing Rift

One major source of strain has been the Congress’s push for a significantly larger seat share in the upcoming election. In the 2021 polls, the party contested 25 seats and won 18, but its leaders argue this underrepresents their strength. AICC in-charge Girish Chodankar announced preparations to contest in 125 constituencies, forming over 21,000 village committees to expand the Congress base. During a Tirunelveli meeting, Chodankar is reported to have floated a “fifty-fifty” power-sharing demand, calling for 117 Assembly seats and a stake in governance if the coalition wins.

Supporting voices within the party include S. Rajeshkumar, who demanded the formation of a coalition government instead of DMK’s unilateral rule, and former TNCC chief K.S. Alagiri, who echoed the call for “a rightful share in power”. These statements have been publicly leveraged by opposition leaders like Edappadi K. Palaniswami (AIADMK) to portray the alliance as fractured.

Jothimani And Karur Defection Controversy

Congress MP Jothimani openly clashed with DMK minister V. Senthil Balaji after a Congress district office-bearer in Karur defected to the DMK, calling the move “unethical” and accusing DMK leadership of political poaching. This incident followed a July 2025 dispute when Congress MLAs, including Rajeshkumar, criticized DMK MP Tiruchi Siva for remarks perceived as disrespectful toward former CM K. Kamaraj, forcing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to personally intervene. These repeated flare-ups have heightened mistrust between grassroots cadres of both parties.

Selvaperunthagai’s Chembarambakkam Dam Row

Another flashpoint occurred in October 2025 when TNCC president K. Selvaperunthagai expressed anger over being excluded from the Chembarambakkam reservoir water release event in his constituency, Sriperumbudur. He alleged caste bias within the Water Resources Department (WRD) and accused officials of sidelining elected representatives from Congress. His televised remarks criticizing bureaucrats for lack of communication triggered official backlash; the TNSEA engineers’ association demanded a police complaint against him for “disrespectful conduct”. The controversy, though localized, highlighted growing alienation between Congress leaders and the DMK-led state administration.

Political One-Upmanship and Assertion

In recent weeks, Congress leaders have struck an increasingly assertive tone. Manickam Tagore, a senior MP, warned that only those who “give due respect to Congress” would receive Congress’s backing for chief ministership, implicitly nudging DMK toward greater accommodation. The ongoing media discourse now revolves around whether Congress intends to renegotiate terms with DMK or explore new alliances, possibly with Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to expand its southern footprint.

In recent weeks, Congress leaders have struck an increasingly assertive tone. Manickam Tagore, a senior MP, warned that only those who “give due respect to Congress” would receive Congress’s backing for chief ministership, implicitly nudging DMK toward greater accommodation.

AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami has seized upon these rifts, predicting that the partnership “is going to get deserted” before 2026.

Congress insiders acknowledge these tensions but insist that while their alliance with DMK remains intact, the party cannot “close channels of communication” with new political entrants like Vijay. This dual-track strategy reflects Congress’s ambition to strengthen its base independently while maintaining leverage over its senior ally.

Vijay’s Political Positioning And TVK’s Rise

Vijay’s TVK has evolved rapidly since its inception, gathering momentum with mass mobilization campaigns, a strong youth base, and populist rhetoric against both DMK and AIADMK. In September 2025, TVK officially declared Vijay as its chief ministerial candidate, signaling a clear intent to challenge DMK supremacy. Vijay has condemned both major Dravidian parties, accusing the DMK of “underground dealings” with the BJP and branding both as “ideological enemies”. His message — a fusion of anti-establishment politics and Dravidian cultural pride — resonates with younger and first-time voters disillusioned by traditional power blocs.

The Broader Political Equation

The speculation around a Rahul-Vijay meeting cannot be isolated from the larger realignments in Tamil Nadu politics. With AIADMK battling internal divisions and the BJP attempting indirect influence through regional outreach, a Congress–TVK alignment — even a limited one — could shift the axis of competition away from a pure DMK vs. rest binary. Observers note that such a move, if it materializes, would give Congress both negotiating power with DMK and a contingency link to a rising force with immense popular appeal.

Recent developments indicate that even AIADMK leaders have floated the idea of understanding with Vijay’s TVK as a “need of the hour,” further proving the magnetic pull of Vijay’s expanding political relevance.

What Lies Ahead

As Tamil Nadu approaches the 2026 elections, the state’s political ecosystem is entering a phase of flux unseen since the early Dravidian movement era. The Rahul Gandhi-Vijay engagement, even if informal, signals that national parties recognize TVK’s voter appeal and strategic potential. Whether this evolves into a tactical alliance or remains a gesture of outreach, one thing is certain — Vijay Chandrasekhar has moved from the periphery of Tamil Nadu politics to its centre stage, compelling both allies and opponents to rethink their electoral arithmetic.

In a stunning display of judicial overreach and political manipulation, the recent proceedings in the Madras High Court surrounding the Karur stampede tragedy have raised troubling questions about fairness, impartiality, and the misuse of institutions for political vendetta. What unfolded on October 3, 2025 was not just a courtroom hearing—it was a meticulously staged political drama scripted to vilify Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and its leader, Vijay, without even giving them a chance to be heard.

TVK Silenced Before It Could Speak

Shockingly, TVK was not even made a party to the case. The petition—filed by one PH Dinesh from Villivakkam—was heard without including the very party being accused.

No representative from TVK was present, no notice was issued, and no opportunity for defense was granted. Yet, Justice N. Senthilkumar went on to make scathing personal remarks about Vijay’s leadership and mental state—comments that have no place in judicial proceedings. How can a judge, who is expected to uphold neutrality, comment on the “mental state” or “leadership quality” of an individual who isn’t even before the court to defend himself?

A Judicial Free Pass For DMK Propaganda

Within hours of the oral observations, DMK’s media ecosystem sprang into action. Television debates, social media influencers, and Dravidianist propaganda outlets ran coordinated stories amplifying the judge’s remarks—clearly designed to tarnish TVK’s image in the public eye. It appeared less like a coincidence and more like a choreographed operation where the judiciary’s words became political weapons.

The Curious Case

Even more curious is the timing. The Madurai Bench of the High Court was already hearing the anticipatory bail pleas of TVK leaders Nirmal Kumar and Bussy Anand regarding the same Karur incident. So, how did another PIL suddenly make its way to the Madras High Court within days? Enter the DMK—experts in backdoor politics, adept at manipulating institutions to target opponents while maintaining a façade of legality.

The PIL was filed on September 30, and mysteriously, it was listed within just days—a level of judicial efficiency rarely seen for ordinary citizens. Unsurprisingly, the only advocates present were those representing the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government. Why was Vijay not made a respondent, when the entire proceeding revolved around his event and party?

Justice Or Bias?

The judge’s remarks were more political than judicial. Questions such as “What kind of party is this?”, “The leader fled,” and “This shows the mental state of the leader” reflect not a search for truth, but an underlying prejudice. On what legal basis or metric does a judge assess a politician’s leadership quality or mental state?

The judge even referred to a “hit-and-run” case based on YouTube videos and accused the organisers of negligence—without TVK’s side being present to offer context. Ironically, the same video also shows Vijay cautioning bikers to be careful. But without representation, that crucial detail never made it into the record.

A Mockery Of Natural Justice

At the heart of this controversy lies a grave question: has the principle of natural justice been thrown out of the window? The two pillars of natural justice—the rule against bias and the right to be heard—exist to prevent precisely such miscarriages. No one should be a judge in their own cause, and no person should be condemned without an opportunity to present their case. Yet, in this instance, both these foundational principles were violated with impunity.

Had the judge even summoned TVK, condemned the incident, and sought an explanation the next day—it would have been a fair exercise. Instead, he delivered sweeping condemnations that have now become talking points for the DMK’s political propaganda machine.

The Larger Conspiracy: DMK’s Fascism Through Judicial Facade

The entire sequence of events bears the hallmark of an orchestrated DMK operation—using the judiciary’s shoulder to fire its political gun. A tragedy that demanded sober introspection and accountability has been converted into a political weapon to delegitimise Vijay’s nascent political movement. The DMK, afraid of TVK’s rapid rise and mass appeal, is now resorting to cowardly, anti-democratic tactics—targeting opponents through proxies in the courtroom rather than through public mandate.

This move is not just aimed at TVK; it strikes at all opposition parties. This order comes at a time when BJP Tamil Nadu President Nainar Nagenthiran is set to launch a state-wide tour to expose the DMK government’s failure. AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami has already been drawing massive crowd for his “Makkalai Kaapom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom” campaign.

The court has effectively ordered that no permission for the conduct of public meetings on State Highways or National Highways will be granted until a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding public gatherings is framed by the State Government and approved by the Court. So, until the DMK government submits an SOP and gets it approved from the court no party can organize rallies and public meetings which is a brazen attempt at trampling the democratic rights of opposition parties and stifling political dissent with judicial sanction.

A Word Of Advice For Vijay

Vijay, welcome to Politics 101. Do not be disheartened by orchestrated attacks, courtroom theatrics, or propaganda campaigns targeting you and TVK. Politics is a rough, dirty arena, and the challenges you face today will only intensify with time. If your goal is to truly challenge and eventually eradicate the DMK, you must be strategic: join hands with like-minded political actors, build alliances, and surround yourself with advisers who are impartial, wise, and committed to your cause—not clouded by prejudice or personal bias against a party or its leader. Only with preparation, patience, and a clear political vision can TVK navigate these storms and emerge stronger.

From dance floors to digital battlefields, actor Vijay’s supporters have turned the viral track ‘Halamathi Habibu’ into a weapon of satire. TVK cadres are flooding social media with memes, roasting former DMK Liquor Minister Senthil Balaji — rechristening the hit as ‘Bottle Ku ₹10’ to lampoon the liquor mafia and corruption allegations.

At the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur on 27 September 2025 — a bastion of Senthil Balaji — actor Vijay took a musical swipe at the DMK Liquor Minister, over allegations that he was illegally pocketing ₹10 per bottle from consumers.

Eyewitness accounts had informed the BJP-led NDA panel that came down to visit Karur following the stampede that a few miscreants started throwing slippers at Vijay when he sang the song.

Eyewitnesses told the BJP-led NDA panel, which visited Karur after the stampede, that a few miscreants began hurling slippers at Vijay while he was performing the song following which the stampede happened.

With Opposition parties like BJP, AIADMK and TVK accusing Senthil Balaji of sabotage, TVK’s ‘virtual warriors’ have taken a step further entering into ‘Beast’ mode to target the former liquor minister.

They’ve replaced the lyrics of the famous Halamathi Habibu song with “Bottle ku ₹10” and Senthil Balaji dancing to it.

Disturbing eyewitness accounts related to the Karur stampede incident have emerged, with claims that unidentified individuals infiltrated the rally and that some miscreants allegedly used knives to injure attendees. These shocking revelations were presented to an eight-member National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary committee, constituted by BJP National President JP Nadda and headed by BJP MP Hema Malini.

On 30 September 2025, BJP Tamil Nadu President Nainar Nagendran, accompanied by senior leaders including K. Annamalai, met with the NDA panel to present their findings and testimonies related to the tragic incident.

During the meeting, Annamalai introduced a female eyewitness who had been present at the rally and gave a harrowing account of the chaos that unfolded.

Annamalai questioned her, asking, “How long did this issue last after Vijay came? Half an hour, one hour, 40 minutes. How long were the people in this commotion?”

The woman responded, “He spoke for only about four minutes. Before that, everyone here fainted and fell. I don’t know why they fainted. It’s because of the crammed. I don’t know why it became a crammed. But at the last entry, an ambulance came and stopped unnecessarily. The minute the ambulance stopped, there was a stampede. When the ambulance stopped there, they started to move us aside and when everyone started pushing it created a commotion.”

Further questioning by Annamalai followed: “For how long did this last? After you fell into the ditch, half an hour, one hour, how long?” The witness replied, “It would be one hour. Everyone fainted and fell, and the ambulance going away, it took one hour for all this to clear up.”

When asked, “Then when did Vijay leave?” she said, “Within four minutes, they knew there was a commotion here and started fainting. They threw about 10 bottles of water for them. Before they could get the water, the next minute he left. It’s not just that. It didn’t even take two seconds. The moment the current was cut, they moved.”

Annamalai then asked whether she felt outsiders were present among the crowd. The woman replied, “Sir, definitely there is.” She further explained, “Because we are normal people. Now there are so many of us, we are all normal. But it is clear that they were not normal. Because with a beard, a certain kind of face, they should be normal, right? They were not normal.”

She also revealed that during the chaos, some individuals wielded knives and injured people who were standing on the opposite side. Four acquaintances and friends standing on the opposite side were slashed and admitted to the Government Hospital.

The NDA committee, formed to probe the events leading up to the September 27 stampede, includes BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Tejasvi Surya, Braj Lal, Aprajita Sarangi, Rekha Sharma, as well as Shrikant Shinde from Shiv Sena, and Putta Mahesh Kumar from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

The delegation’s objective is to conduct an on-ground investigation, speak with the victims and families of those affected, and prepare a detailed report on the causes and lapses that contributed to the tragic event.

In politics, strategic moves are often aimed at outmaneuvering opponents and gaining the upper hand. While Indian political culture has traditionally maintained a certain level of decorum, recent developments under the DMK government have raised concerns about a significant erosion of that standard. The latest controversy surrounds what critics are calling “ambulance politics” — a tactic allegedly used to disrupt opposition rallies by sending ambulances through crowded gatherings during speeches.

At first, the presence of ambulances during political events was seen as a genuine medical necessity. Political leaders, including those from the AIADMK, were respectful and allowed them to pass without objection. However, repeated incidents during AIADMK campaign events have raised suspicions that the emergency vehicles were being used intentionally to cause disruption. Each passing ambulance forced interruptions in speeches, created confusion among the crowd, and hindered the momentum of the events — drawing sharp criticism from the opposition.

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has publicly alleged that the ruling DMK orchestrated these incidents to derail his campaign. He claimed that ambulances crossed his rallies on at least 30 occasions, disrupting his speeches and distracting the crowd. During a rally in Anaicut, Vellore district, tensions escalated when party cadres confronted an ambulance driver trying to pass through the gathering.

“This is not accidental. I’ve seen empty ambulances entering my rallies around 30 times,” EPS alleged. “This is a deliberate attempt to interfere with our campaign. If this continues, the ambulance may have to take the driver in as a patient,” he said, expressing his frustration over what he believes is a calculated strategy.

A similar incident occurred on 13 September during actor Vijay’s first campaign rally in Trichy under his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). An ambulance entered the rally space mid-speech, forcing Vijay to pause and momentarily throwing the event into disarray. The unexpected entry drew comparisons with the disturbances faced by AIADMK and fueled speculation about a coordinated pattern.

During his campaign rally in Nagapattinam on 20 September, Vijay raised concerns about the DMK government’s alleged attempts to sabotage his events by assigning him cramped and overcrowded venues. He criticized saying, “What great thing did we ask for? A place where the public can stand and watch in peace and freely. We select that place and ask for permission for it. But what are you people doing? You leave all those places and choose a place where people will stand in a crowd, in congestion, and give us that. What exactly is your intention, sir?”

Further controversy arose during TVK’s rally in Karur on 27 September 2025 — a tragic event that ended in a stampede claiming 39 lives. Reports indicated that several ambulances were seen arriving at the venue before and during the chaos, although an exact count remains unconfirmed. Vijay himself acknowledged the presence of at least one ambulance bearing a TVK flag, but no official figures have been provided.

From the official Live stream from the TVK page shows two ambulance crossing the rally in that narrow stretch filled with thousand of cadres.

(Narrow venue Vijay Campaign)

(Two ambulance crossing back to back)

While Palaniswami’s claim of 30 ambulance-related disruptions has not been independently verified, the recurring nature of such incidents across major campaign events has triggered widespread debate. The use of ambulances whether deliberate or coincidental to interrupt political rallies has been condemned by critics as cheap attempts to foil Opposition rallies.

The repeated intrusion of ambulances into opposition rallies is more than a series of coincidences — it is a chilling display of how the DMK government appears willing to weaponize even emergency services for political gain. What should be sacred spaces of public engagement and democratic debate have instead become arenas for calculated disruption, leaving party workers and citizens alike frustrated, endangered, and disillusioned. When ambulances — symbols of care and urgency — are turned into instruments of obstruction, it exposes a governance culture that values political theatrics over public safety, and manipulation over decency. If politics in Tamil Nadu continues down this path, the lines between democracy and farce will blur entirely, and the citizens, not the parties, will pay the highest price.

DMK sympathizer and Kollywood actress Oviya, has sparked controversy after publicly demanding the arrest of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in connection with the tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur that claimed 40 lives.

Oviya took to Instagram to express her outrage, posting a story with the message “Arrest Vijay.” The post came in response to the deadly incident that occurred during a rally organized by Vijay and his party.

However, the story was deleted within hours after Oviya was bombarded with a wave of hostile and vulgar messages from TVK supporters and Vijay’s fans, who flooded her social media like a swarm, prompting her to take it down.

In response to the backlash, Oviya later shared a more reflective post. Quoting a popular saying, she wrote, “Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the foolish, a joke for the rich, but a tragedy for the poor.” The message appeared to be a commentary on the socio-economic dimensions of the tragedy, but it only intensified the backlash from Vijay’s followers. She has since posted screenshots of the abusive messages she received, stating that while many came to hurl insults, one comment in particular claiming that her distress brings someone peace deeply unsettled her.

Amidst the growing outrage and debate, TVK has announced a financial compensation of ₹20 lakh for each family affected by the Karur tragedy. This decision was finalized during an emergency online meeting of the party leadership. As per the latest official update, 40 people have lost their lives, including 17 women, four boys, and five girls. Authorities have so far identified 35 of the deceased, 28 of whom were residents of Karur.

Meanwhile, actor Vijay’s swift departure from the rally site immediately after the stampede has triggered further criticism. His absence in the immediate aftermath of the incident has raised questions about leadership and accountability, fueling the ongoing political and public debate over the tragic event.

A wave of shock and grief swept across Karur after a tragic stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay’s rally in Veluchamipuram on Saturday evening left 31 people dead and more than 40 injured.

According to Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, the deceased included six children, nine men, and 16 women, all of whom were brought dead to hospitals. He also confirmed that medical reinforcements were being rushed from across the state, with 24 doctors from Tiruchy, 20 from Salem, and five from Dindigul expected to arrive in Karur within an hour.

The Tamil Nadu government has mobilised extensive resources in response to the disaster. Senior health officials, including the Health Secretary and Director of Medical Education, headed to Karur, while additional doctors from Tiruchy, Dindigul, Namakkal, and Madurai Medical College were deployed to Karur Medical College, where most victims were admitted. Dr. R. Suganthy Rajakumari, Director of Medical Education, stated that around 30 doctors were already on site and more would be sent if required. She further noted that 33 bodies had been brought to the college hospital, which has sufficient facilities to handle the crisis.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to visit Karur on Sunday to review the situation. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and former minister Senthil Balaji also reached the hospital to oversee relief measures.

President of India Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah have expressed grief over the tragic incident.

The incident occurred during Vijay’s campaign in the Kongu region, part of his preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections. Arriving by chartered flight from Chennai earlier in the day, he had been campaigning in Namakkal before heading to Karur, where his rally drew massive crowds. The chaos broke out during his address, forcing the actor-turned-politician to cut short his speech as people began collapsing in the heat and crush.

Vijay, visibly shaken, appealed to his supporters to make way for ambulances and provide assistance to the injured.

However, many have criticised the TVK chief for failing to meet the families of those killed or injured in the stampede before his departure.

A complaint has been submitted on behalf of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) against YouTuber and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) functionary Sattai Durai Murugan, following a controversial video in which he criticized actor-turned-politician Vijay, his supporters, and appeared to mock women who attended his political events.

Actor Vijay, who recently launched a public outreach campaign and has been holding meetings across Tamil Nadu every Saturday since his political debut rally in Trichy on 13 September, ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

In response to one of Durai Murugan’s videos which has since gone viral TVK functionary Imayathamizhan has lodged an online complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW), alleging that the video contained demeaning and sexist remarks targeting women who participated in Vijay’s events. The complaint also calls for the video’s removal and demands appropriate action against Durai Murugan.

In the now-viral video, Sattai Durai Murugan appears to ridicule women emotionally reacting to Vijay’s presence at the campaign. He narrates how one girl cried after seeing Vijay, while another wept because she couldn’t. He further mentioned that the mother of one of the girls was also present at the rally.

Durai Murugan reportedly mocked these emotional displays, calling into question the seriousness of the campaign and its supporters. He also referred to an incident where a woman was supposedly crying after losing her mobile phone at the event, suggesting that the entire scene lacked political maturity and seriousness.

While claiming not to encourage personal insults or obscene speech about Vijay himself, Durai Murugan accused Vijay’s fan base of using vulgar and derogatory language against NTK leader Seeman, urging people to challenge such hypocrisy.

In another portion of the video, Durai Murugan allegedly derided the public contributions made to TVK, questioning the strength of the party’s grassroots support and mocking Vijay’s leadership by implying he would panic even at the sight of an oncoming car.
