A young child has died in Tiruchirappalli district, allegedly due to the absence of medical staff at a government health facility, triggering concern among local residents over access to basic healthcare.

The incident occurred near Thuraiyur, at the Kannanoor Government Primary Health Centre. According to reports, a four-and-a-half-year-old boy was brought to the facility for treatment, but no doctor was on duty at the time. The delay in receiving medical attention is believed to have resulted in the child’s death.

Residents of Kannanoor and surrounding areas stated that the Primary Health Centre serves nearly 18 villages yet often functions without adequate staffing. They alleged that both doctors and nurses are frequently unavailable, especially during emergencies, forcing patients to travel long distances for treatment.

Locals have raised concerns over recurring difficulties in accessing timely medical care and have called for immediate steps to ensure round-the-clock availability of qualified medical personnel at the centre.

The DMK’s much-hyped 12th State-level Maanadu at Siruganur, Trichy, on 9 March 2026 was projected as a show of force – a grand political statement ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Party functionaries had spent weeks publicising a target of 10 lakh attendees, with 3 lakh chairs spread across a staggering 20 lakh square foot venue. What unfolded, however, told a different story.

Live visuals from the venue, widely circulated on social media, showed vast stretches of empty chairs when Chief Minister MK Stalin arrived at the ramp area with estimates suggesting nearly three-fourths of the seating capacity remained unoccupied at key moments during the event. For a party that positioned this conference as proof of its organisational strength and public goodwill, the optics were far from flattering.

The timing makes the optics worse. The Maanadu/conference was originally scheduled for 8 March 2026 but was quietly postponed by a day, officially attributed to the Samayapuram Mariamman Poochorithal festival. Critics read it as last-minute fumbling by a party that could not synchronise its mega-event with ground realities.

The DMK had marketed the Trichy conference with a clear electoral pitch: “Stalin Should Continue; Let Tamil Nadu Win”, framing it as a pre-election confidence vote. But when a ruling party that controls the full machinery of the state government struggles to fill its own chairs, the confidence vote reads differently from the ground.

To be sure, the DMK will claim massive mobilisation and point to the sheer size of the venue as context. But optics in politics are rarely about what you explain later – they are about what the camera captures in the moment. And on 9 March 2026 in Trichy, the cameras captured a lot of empty chairs.

As Tamil Nadu inches toward what promises to be a fiercely contested 2026 election, the question DMK insiders must now quietly ask themselves is whether this was simply a logistical miscalculation or an early signal from a public growing tired of business as usual.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which will be contesting elections for the first time, is in the final stages of identifying key constituencies for its candidates. Party sources indicated that constituencies for Vijay and several senior functionaries were currently being finalised, generating considerable anticipation among party workers about where the TVK chief would enter the electoral fray.

According to party sources, Aadhav Arjuna, the party’s election wing general secretary and son-in-law of lottery businessman Martin, is likely to contest from the Villivakkam constituency in Chennai and has reportedly begun groundwork there. Former AIADMK MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar, who recently joined TVK, had initially expressed interest in contesting from the same constituency but was reportedly persuaded to consider another seat.

Arunraj, a former Indian Revenue Service officer who resigned from his post to join TVK, is likely to contest from Tiruchengode after reportedly receiving Vijay’s approval and beginning field-level preparations in the constituency.

As reported in ABP Nadu, party joint general secretary C.T.R. Nirmalkumar, who had earlier considered contesting from Usilampatti, is now likely to contest from Thirupparankundram following instructions from Vijay, sources said. The constituency has recently drawn attention due to controversies related to the Thirupparankundram Murugan temple and a recent visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Former AIADMK minister K.P. Krishnan, regarded as an important face of the Mutharaiyar community, is likely to contest from Srirangam. Party sources indicated that Vijay had personally encouraged him to contest there amid criticism directed at the sitting DMK MLA.

In Karur, the party is reportedly considering fielding district TVK secretary Mathialagan against DMK minister Senthil Balaji. Mathialagan had earlier been arrested in connection with the Karur crowd crush incident and is currently associated with the party’s district-level leadership.

Meanwhile, former AIADMK minister Sengottaiyan, who has joined TVK, is likely to contest from his native constituency of Gobichettipalayam, while party general secretary Bussy Anand is expected to contest from T. Nagar in Chennai.

As for Vijay himself, party insiders indicated that he is likely to contest from Perambur in Chennai in his electoral debut. Sources said the party had conducted ward-level surveys to assess his prospects in the constituency and that the feedback was reportedly favourable.

There are also indications that Vijay may contest from a second seat, with Tiruchirappalli East emerging as a possible choice. Party sources said preparations were underway for the TVK leader to potentially contest from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East.

TVK is expected to release its first list of around 40 candidates soon. Party insiders suggested that Vijay’s constituencies would likely be among the key announcements in the list.

The Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) stepped up its election pitch after party chief Seeman unveiled candidates for all 234 Assembly constituencies at a high-energy conference in Alapatti Pudur, Trichy district. The event, which saw massive participation from cadres and supporters, has since drawn attention on social media, not just for its political messaging but also for the discipline displayed by attendees.

With the Assembly elections only months away, Seeman confirmed that he will contest from Karaikudi while positioning NTK as an independent alternative to the DMK and AIADMK alliances. The party also announced gender parity in its slate, fielding 117 women and 117 men across constituencies.

Viral Moments After the Conference

What particularly caught public attention, however, came after the speeches ended. Video clips circulating online showed young volunteers, including children, helping elders rearrange chairs at the venue, a gesture that many users praised as reflecting organisational discipline.

Several observers remarked that the scenes reminded them of the volunteer culture seen in structured cadre-based movements, with supporters voluntarily staying back to restore order at the venue rather than dispersing immediately.

It is also noteworthy that the conference did not make the headlines for alcohol consumption, cash distribution, violence, or law and order issues at the venue.

Echoes of Murugan Devotees Conference

The visuals quickly triggered comparisons with another widely discussed event, the Murugan Devotees Conference organised by Hindu Munnani in June 2025, at Amma Thidal in Madurai. That gathering had similarly gone viral after attendees were seen neatly stacking chairs and volunteers cleaned the grounds, leaving the venue reportedly spotless by the next morning.

Social media users at the time had contrasted that display of civic discipline with the aftermath of some political rallies, particularly targeting DMK meetings where critics have often alleged poor post-event cleanliness.

For NTK, the conference was meant to showcase electoral readiness. But if social media reactions are any indication, the party may have also scored a quieter public relations win, through the small but widely shared images of disciplined cadre behaviour after the crowds went home.

A video showing the assault of a pregnant woman by alleged drug addicts in Tiruchirappalli has triggered shock and concern among residents, with the incident drawing attention to law-and-order and narcotics issues in the locality.

The incident occurred near Edamalaipatti Pudur police station limits, in Kollankulam, where more than 50 families reside. CCTV footage that has since surfaced shows a local resident, identified as Dharmaraj, and his pregnant wife Arulmozhi being pushed to the ground and attacked by a group of intoxicated men. The visuals have circulated widely, intensifying public anger.

According to residents, a youth from the area has for some time been returning to the neighbourhood late at night under the influence of alcohol, ganja and injectable drugs, allegedly engaging in violent and anti-social behaviour. Locals claim that those who question him or attempt to intervene are assaulted. There are also allegations of vehicles being vandalised, electricity connections being deliberately cut, and houses being targeted with intimidation tactics.

Complaints were reportedly submitted earlier to the Edamalaipatti Pudur police station regarding repeated disturbances and suspected drug activity. Residents allege that no strong preventive action followed, allowing tensions to escalate in the neighbourhood.

The attack on the pregnant woman has heightened fear in the area. Residents say women are afraid to walk alone at night, and families with children feel increasingly unsafe. Some have even begun discussing whether they should vacate the locality if the situation does not improve.

The incident has also revived broader concerns about the availability of narcotics, particularly ganja and injectable drugs, in urban pockets of Tiruchirappalli. Questions are being raised locally about supply networks and enforcement gaps.

Residents, meanwhile, have appealed for immediate police intervention, tighter surveillance, and sustained patrols in the area to ensure safety, especially for women and vulnerable families.

A resident expressed her anger and frustration saying, “This kind of atrocity and injustice is happening regularly in this street. After consuming ganja and alcohol, they create havoc. We are scared. We have children at home. We are afraid to even step out. We don’t know whether to vacate this place or continue living here. You must give us protection. They drink alcohol, consume ganja, inject drugs… then they come and smash vehicles and destroy property. If we question them, ten of them gather together and surround us.”

Police have yet to release a detailed public statement on arrests or the status of the investigation as of now.

A video clip showing a youth chasing another person with a weapon in the middle of a busy road in broad daylight has triggered fresh concerns over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu.

The clip, reportedly from Trichy, shows a young man aggressively running on the road while shouting explicit death threats in Tamil – “If you are a man, come here”. The man is armed with a patta kathi (machete) and dangerously chasing another man in a public area.

While details are scarce, there is no clarity on the circumstances that led to the chase, the identities of those involved, or whether the police intervened. It is also not clear if the one wielding the machete was intoxicated.

Just a few months ago, in October 2025, the news of 415 teenage pregnancies and 59 child marriages in 10 months broke in Tamil Nadu.

Now, it is Trichy’s turn with starker numbers. Trichy district has recorded a worrying rise in teenage pregnancies even as it has shown improvements in key health indicators such as maternal and infant mortality. Data accessed by The Times of India showed that 834 cases of teenage pregnancies were reported in the district between April and November 2025, with officials indicating that the number is likely to reach 1,000 by the end of the financial year, marking the second such instance in the past five years. In the previous financial year, 2024-25, the district had reported 1,234 cases.

On average, nearly 100 cases are being recorded every month, amounting to three to four cases each day. Officials attributed the increase partly to improved reporting systems, but child rights activists and public health experts said the figures pointed to deeper structural problems, particularly the prevalence of child marriage.

Teenage pregnancy is defined as pregnancy occurring between the ages of 13 and 19. While pregnancy at 19 is legally permitted, health experts have said it still carries medical risks. A study published in the Tamil Nadu Journal of Public Health and Medical Research in April 2025 reported that adolescent mothers aged 10 to 19 faced significantly higher risks of eclampsia, infections and post-delivery complications, while their babies were more vulnerable to low birth weight, preterm births and severe neonatal conditions.

Former Trichy Child Welfare Committee member S Prabhu said the cases reflected distressing social realities. He stated that in many instances, children were forcibly married after families discovered a relationship, while in others, adolescents eloped and conceived, prompting families to hastily arrange marriages. He added that there were also cases of girls being married to relatives who were unable to find a match, and some who agreed to marriage because they had lost interest in continuing their education. Prabhu said that Village Level Child Protection Committees (VLCPCs) and district child protection units needed to conduct more awareness programmes and noted that the prolonged absence of a panchayat secretary to head the VLCPCs had weakened grassroots monitoring.

Former Trichy Child Welfare Committee chairman and former Tamil Nadu Commission for Protection of Child Rights member P Mohan said that state government data included pregnancies of 19-year-olds, which could mask the true extent of child pregnancies. He argued that there should be a mechanism to clearly segregate cases involving minors from those involving legal-age adolescents.

Child rights activist A Devanayan said that such segregation was technically simple, noting that the PICME portal already used Aadhaar-based age verification. He added that authorities should focus on hotspot-based interventions rather than one-time district- or state-wide drives, stressing that prevention had to take precedence over cure.

District Child Protection Officer P Ragul Ganthi said a meeting on the issue had been held on Thursday, chaired by Secretary to Government Jayashree Muralidharan. Meanwhile, a senior state official maintained that the apparent surge in numbers reflected improved reporting, stating that cases were now being registered in nearly all instances and that District Social Welfare Officers (DSWOs) and DCPOs had been instructed to closely monitor and follow up on every reported case.

An investigation triggered by a complaint from a farmer in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district has uncovered a pan-India illegal kidney transplant network involving agents, donors, doctors, and hospitals, with multiple unauthorised transplant surgeries allegedly conducted at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy district, police officials said on Wednesday, 31 December 2025.

The probe, being led by Chandrapur Police, has revealed international links extending to Cambodia and has brought under scrutiny the role of doctors based in Delhi and Tamil Nadu.

According to Chandrapur Superintendent of Police Sudarshan Mummaka, several illegal kidney transplant operations were allegedly carried out at STAR KIMS Hospital, run by Dr Rajarathinam Govindaswamy. Police said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Local Crime Branch (LCB) teams were dispatched to detain two doctors, one in Delhi and another in Trichy, after their names emerged during the investigation.

Complaint by Chandrapur Farmer Led to Racket Exposure

The investigation originated from a complaint filed by Roshan Kude, a farmer from Chandrapur district in Maharashtra, who alleged that he had sold his kidney in Cambodia after falling into a debt trap created by illegal moneylenders. Police said Kude had initially borrowed ₹1 lakh, but due to exorbitant interest rates, the debt escalated to ₹74 lakh. Unable to repay despite selling personal belongings, he decided to sell his kidney.

Through a social media page titled “Kidney Donor Community,” Kude came into contact with a person identified as Krishna, also known as Ramakrishna Sunchu, who allegedly acted as an agent in the kidney trafficking racket. Acting on Krishna’s instructions, Kude travelled to Kolkata and was later taken to Cambodia, where his kidney was surgically removed.

Doctors, Hospital, and Financial Trail

Police said one of the accused, Himanshu Bharadwaj, who acted as a kidney donor, admitted that his kidney was surgically removed by Dr Ravinder Pal Singh from New Delhi, along with Dr Rajarathinam Govindaswamy, Managing Director of STAR KIMS Hospital, Trichy. These claims were corroborated by the statement of another accused, Krishna, and supported by technical and mobile data evidence, police said.

Investigators found that each illegal kidney transplant allegedly involved payments ranging between ₹50 lakh and ₹80 lakh. Of this, Dr Ravinder Pal Singh reportedly received around ₹10 lakh per procedure, while Dr Govindaswamy allegedly charged approximately ₹20 lakh for hospital arrangements and treatment. Krishna, acting as a broker, collected nearly ₹20 lakh per transplant.

In contrast, the actual kidney donors were paid only ₹5-8 lakh, highlighting what police described as severe exploitation of economically vulnerable individuals.

Arrests, Bail, and Ongoing Efforts

Police have so far arrested six moneylenders in connection with the case and invoked offences under Sections 18 and 19 of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994. During transit remand proceedings, Dr Ravinder Pal Singh was granted interim bail by a Delhi court and directed to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Chandrapur on 2 January 2026. Police said efforts were ongoing to arrest Dr Govindaswamy.

Earlier in the probe, the SIT arrested a fake doctor from Solapur, identified as Krishna, who was once a kidney donor himself and later became an agent for the racket. Police said he allegedly facilitated kidney removal for 10-12 people at hospitals in Cambodia and earned commissions from the traffickers.

Tamil Nadu Inquiry Slows Amid Festivities

Two days after Maharashtra Police visited Tamil Nadu on 30 December 2025 to investigate the Trichy angle, progress on the case has been slow, with Tamil Nadu Police citing festivals and holidays. Trichy Police Commissioner N Kamini said officers were preoccupied with the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival and noted that such investigations require coordination across departments, particularly the health department.

Tamil Nadu Health Secretary P Senthilkumar said the department had sought detailed reports from Maharashtra Police and directed district health officials to submit a prima facie inquiry report. The Directorate of Medical Services instructed the Joint Director of Health Services in Trichy to conduct the inquiry. However, officials said the probe would commence only after senior officers returned from leave.

Pattern Echoes Earlier Namakkal Kidney Scandal

The latest revelations come just months after Tamil Nadu witnessed the unravelling of another major kidney trafficking racket in Namakkal district. In that case, a DMK-linked party worker, M Anandan was named as a key broker and later went absconding.

The 2025 scandal placed Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Hospital, multispeciality institution in Tamil Nadu, under intense scrutiny over allegations of illegal organ transplants involving trafficked kidneys from poor women. Investigators alleged that more than 90 women, mostly daily wage earners from Namakkal district, were lured with payments of ₹5-10 lakh and subjected to kidney removal using forged Aadhaar cards and fabricated medical records.

The case drew political attention due to the hospital’s links to DMK MLA Kathiravan, son of the hospital group’s founder, leading to allegations of institutional protection and regulatory evasion. Authorities from the health, revenue, and police departments continue to probe the network, while officials acknowledge that fear, stigma, and social pressure have prevented several victims from coming forward.

Investigators say the Chandrapur–Trichy–Cambodia trail suggests an entrenched, multi-state organ trafficking network exploiting poverty, weak oversight, and regulatory gaps in the transplant ecosystem.

On 14 December 2025, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan released a commemorative postage stamp honouring Emperor Perumbidugu Mutharaiyar II, also known as Suvaran Maran, marking a significant recognition of one of ancient Tamil Nadu’s most formidable rulers. The stamp release at the Vice President’s Enclave in New Delhi drew dignitaries including Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L Murugan, underlining the national importance of honouring this towering historical figure.

A Ruler of Remarkable Vision and Military Prowess

Emperor Perumbidugu Mutharaiyar II belonged to the illustrious Mutharaiyar dynasty, which held dominion over the central regions of Tamil Nadu during the 7th to 9th centuries CE. His reign, spanning nearly four decades from Tiruchirappalli, represents one of the most significant periods in medieval Tamil history – a time when administrative sophistication, military genius, and cultural refinement converged to shape South Indian civilization.

The Emperor’s name itself – Perumbidugu, meaning “Great Thunder”, reflects the formidable respect and awe he commanded during his lifetime. His reputation was not built on conquest alone; it was grounded in a balanced approach to statecraft that valued justice, prosperity, and the arts with equal measure.

Administrative Stability and Territorial Expansion

Vice President Radhakrishnan, in his address at the stamp release, highlighted that Mutharaiyar’s reign was marked by administrative stability, territorial expansion, cultural patronage, and military prowess. Unlike many rulers who relied solely on martial might, Emperor Perumbidugu Mutharaiyar II demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of governance, establishing systems of administration that ensured not merely the consolidation of power, but the stability and prosperity of his realm.

His unwavering commitment to justice became a hallmark of his rule, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised this quality in his remarks following the stamp release, noting that the Emperor was “endowed with remarkable vision, foresight and strategic brilliance” and acted “with determination in establishing justice.”

Patron of Infrastructure and Agricultural Transformation

One of the most enduring legacies of Emperor Mutharaiyar II lies in his visionary approach to irrigation and agricultural development. The irrigation works initiated during his reign fundamentally transformed the Tiruchirappalli region, converting it into a granary and bringing unprecedented prosperity to the people.

Inscriptions found across multiple locations in Tamil Nadu including Senthalai, Narthamalai, and areas along the northern banks of the Cauvery, bear witness to his contributions to temple endowments and irrigation infrastructure. These stone records, silent echoes from over a millennium ago, testify to the Emperor’s conviction that a ruler’s true wealth lay in enriching the lives of his subjects through resource management and public works.

A Champion of Tamil Culture and Literature

Beyond the battlefield and the administrative chamber, Emperor Perumbidugu Mutharaiyar II earned recognition as a great patron of Tamil culture and literature. His court became a space where poets, scholars, and artisans flourished, contributing to the vibrancy of Tamil intellectual and artistic traditions during the medieval period.

The Vice President observed that the Emperor’s reign occupies a distinguished place in South Indian history, precisely because it represents an era when cultural sophistication and martial capability reinforced rather than competed with each other. This duality—the warrior-king who also refined the arts—makes Mutharaiyar II a unique figure in Tamil annals.

Living Memory in Folklore and Tradition

Even today, nearly twelve centuries after his death, Emperor Mutharaiyar II remains alive in the collective memory of Tamil Nadu through folk songs and temple festivals in districts such as Tiruchirappalli, Pudukottai, and Thanjavur. These living traditions represent the deepest form of historical continuity, not preserved merely in scholarly texts, but woven into the cultural fabric of millions of ordinary people who keep his memory and legacy alive through ritual, song, and oral narrative.

Significance of the Stamp Release

The release of a commemorative postage stamp is more than a philatelic event; it represents a deliberate act of national recognition and historical rebalancing. Vice President Radhakrishnan framed the stamp release as part of a broader government initiative to identify and honour Tamil kings, leaders, and freedom fighters who have not received adequate historical recognition.

In the context of India’s journey towards “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India), the Vice President articulated a crucial point: recognising overlooked historical figures and civilisational heroes helps restore the nation’s cultural pride and provides the youth with exemplars of visionary leadership. Emperor Perumbidugu Mutharaiyar II, in this framing, becomes not merely a historical curiosity, but a living lesson about what effective, just, and culturally conscious governance can achieve.

Prime Minister Modi, in his response to the stamp release, called upon the nation, particularly the younger generation, to study and learn from the extraordinary life and legacy of this ancient Tamil emperor, whose contributions to administration, justice, and culture continue to inspire generations across the subcontinent.

Conclusion

The release of the commemorative postage stamp honouring Emperor Perumbidugu Mutharaiyar II is a fitting tribute to a ruler whose four-decade reign set benchmarks for administrative excellence, military acumen, cultural patronage, and public welfare. From his transformative irrigation works that shaped agricultural prosperity to his cultivation of Tamil letters and temple patronage, Mutharaiyar II exemplified the ideal of the enlightened monarch who viewed power not as an end in itself, but as a means to elevate the wellbeing and dignity of his people.

In honouring this emperor through a national stamp, India acknowledges not only a pivotal chapter of Tamil Nadu’s history, but affirms that the values he embodied – justice, vision, cultural stewardship, and commitment to public welfare, remain eternally relevant to the project of nation-building.

In a shocking incident that unfolded inside the police quarters in Bhima Nagar, Trichy, a 30-year-old man was chased and hacked to death by a four-member gang on Monday morning, in full view of a police officer’s family.

The victim, identified as Thamaraiselvan, a resident of Keelatharai in Bhima Nagar, had married a year ago and was employed with a private company in Thiruvanaikaval. The attack took place around 9 AM on Old Post Office Road in Bhima Nagar.

According to preliminary reports, Thamaraiselvan was riding his two-wheeler when two motorcycles carrying four assailants intercepted and rammed into his vehicle, causing him to fall. The gang immediately attacked him with sickles, prompting him to flee towards the nearby police quarters in a desperate attempt to save his life.

He entered the residence of a police officer from the Thillai Nagar locality, whose family was inside at the time. The door was reportedly open as the officer’s daughter had stepped out to dispose of garbage. Thamaraiselvan ran inside and hid near a grinder in the kitchen, but the gang followed him and repeatedly struck him with machetes on the head, hands, and legs, killing him on the spot.

Police personnel from Palakkarai Police Station and the Assistant Superintendent’s office rushed to the scene soon after the incident. Forensic teams and sniffer dogs were deployed to collect evidence.

Witnesses said nearby policemen tried to stop the attackers by throwing stones but were forced to keep a distance as the gang was heavily armed. Both the officer and his family, who were inside the house during the attack, were left stunned and unable to intervene.

The attackers fled the scene before reinforcements arrived. One suspect has reportedly been detained for interrogation. Police are investigating possible motives, including personal enmity or revenge, and are examining whether the attackers had links to individuals from the Samayapuram area.

CCTV footage from the vicinity is being reviewed to trace the gang’s movements, their vehicles, and escape route. Senior officers have formed special teams to track down the suspects involved in what is being described as one of the most alarming murders in recent years within Trichy city limits.
