The Tamil Nadu government’s Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department’s announcement of a ₹200 crore, 20-year development plan for the Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar Temple has come under fire from temple activists and legal observers, who have raised serious questions about the legality of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department’s continued administrative role at the temple.

At a recent review meeting chaired by Ministers P.K. Sekarbabu (HR&CE) and E.V. Velu (Public Works), the state outlined several changes, including a hike in special darshan fees (from ₹50 to ₹100) and abhishekam charges (from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000), as well as infrastructural improvements such as LED screens, crowd management systems, a PRO appointment, and a proposed ban on mobile phones inside the temple premises. Work on the ₹200 crore master plan is expected to begin by the end of this year.

However, temple activists have pushed back strongly, challenging the very authority under which the HR&CE Department and state ministers are taking such decisions. They allege that the department’s control over the temple is based on a series of illegal administrative extensions and has been repeatedly struck down by constitutional courts.

Temple activist TR Ramesh challenged the authority of the HR&CE department and asked, Under which provision of the HR&CE Act, 1959 these ministers are inspecting Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple and taking decisions for which they have no powers under the Act? Under HR&CE Dept’s administration, Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple lost Rs. 7000 Crores worth Properties in Chennai and other places to chronic encroachment. Temple Lands in Holy Arunachala Hill are under encroachment. These are the achievements of the HR&CE Department’s 70+ years of fraudulent control of the temple.”

He further stated, The @tnhrcedept is controlling Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple administration by multiple Frauds.

Fraud No. 1. The notification of the temple came to an end on 13.12.1951 by an order of the Hon’ble Division Bench of Madras High Court. If the Dept had any sense of shame or propriety they should have gone out of the temple in 1951 itself.

Fraud No. 2. On 16.04.1954 – 7 Judges of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India upheld the order of the Madras High Court – Even then in 1954 the @tnhrcedept did NOT get out of Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple

Fraud No. 3. The TN Govt fraudulently “extended” the non-existing notifications of 45 temples including Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple in Aug and Sept 1956. On 10.02.1965 Supreme Court quashed the G.O. that “extended” the notifications.

Fraud No. 4. TN Govt fraudulently introduced Section 75-A in the HR&CE Act “extending” the notification of temples for one more year. Hon’ble Division Bench of MHC on 22.12.1993 declared that Section 75-A fails Judicial scrutiny. Still the Dept did not go out of 45 temples.

Fraud No. 5. Hon’ble Supreme Court on 27.02.2002 dismissed the SLP filed by @tnhrcedept Commissioner – Again the fraudsters did not go out of the temple. My PIL filed in 2020 before Madras High Court is still pending final adjudication. I shall move the Hon’ble Court for early hearing to remove the fraudsters from the Temple – Lock, stock and Barrel”

Prominent temple activist TR Ramesh has issued a legal notice to the Principal Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Religious Endowments Department and the Commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, seeking urgent action against the illegal occupation of Sri Sekkizhar Swamy temple land by a Christian minority institution, Madha Dental College near Chennai.

According to the notice, the Soosaiya Peter Educational Trust, a registered Christian minority trust, and its managing trustee Mr. Soosaiya Peter, have allegedly been encroaching on the lands belonging to the Sri Sekkizhar Swamy Temple in Kundrathur, Kanchipuram District, since at least 2001. The land in question, measuring approximately 0.64 hectares across two survey numbers (1121/1 and 1080), has reportedly been used to construct and operate the Madha Dental College, which began functioning in 2006.

TR Ramesh asserts that there exists no lease agreement between the temple and the trust, labeling the occupation as illegal and “chronic encroachment.” He further alleges that such encroachment could not have occurred without active collusion by officials of the HR&CE Department, specifically the Executive Officer of the temple and the Regional Joint Commissioner.

In 2023, Mr. Soosaiya Peter filed a petition (W.P. No. 30701 of 2023) before a Division Bench of the Madras High Court, seeking to exchange the temple land, claiming he was a “lessee.” TR Ramesh filed an impleading petition in the same matter, presenting evidence that the Trust was, in fact, an encroacher and not a legitimate leaseholder. The court dismissed Peter’s petition on 12 December 2024, for want of prosecution.

However, Ramesh has sharply criticized the HR&CE Department for failing to inform the High Court of the pending Section 78 encroachment proceedings and for withholding crucial facts during court proceedings. He also raised concerns about a Senior Counsel, allegedly a DMK Member of Parliament, misrepresenting the law before the Division Bench by citing a government order that does not apply to temple lands.

The notice demands that the HR&CE Department:

  • Immediately evict the encroacher and reclaim the temple land and buildings, including over 10,000 sq. ft. of constructed space.

  • Calculate and collect rent for commercial use of the temple land from 2001 onwards, along with 12% compound interest.

  • File criminal complaints under Section 79-B of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1959.

  • Initiate disciplinary action against current and former Executive Officers of the temple and the Regional Joint Commissioner for dereliction of duty.

TR Ramesh also reiterated that while non-Hindu trusts may use temple lands with proper lease agreements and fair market rent, no trust—minority or otherwise—should be allowed to occupy temple lands by fraud, construct permanent buildings, and later claim ownership.

He stated that if no response is received from the authorities, he will move the Madras High Court seeking judicial intervention to recover temple lands and property unlawfully occupied for over two decades.

Temple activist TR Ramesh has expressed serious concern over a recent e-tender issued by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department for renovation works at the ancient Arulmigu Kalamegaperumal Temple in Thirumohur, Madurai. The tender, estimated at ₹2.67 crores, calls for the renovation of all vimanams (temple towers), construction of a stone Vahana Mandapam, Madapalli (temple kitchen), store room, Salai Gopuram, and cut stone flooring around the praharam (circumambulatory path).

Ramesh questioned the need for such extensive works when the temple had already undergone major renovations just two years ago and is reportedly in good condition. In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, he highlighted the temple’s historical and spiritual importance as one of the 108 Divya Desams in the Srivaishnava tradition and emphasized that it is over 1,000 years old.

He raised critical questions:

  1. Why is there a fresh tender for ₹2.67 crores so soon after recent renovations?
  2. Was approval obtained from the Director of the State Archaeology Department, as legally required for heritage temples?
  3. Did the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) conduct an inspection and issue a report, as mandated by a Madras High Court Division Bench ruling?

Ramesh also alleged that the HR&CE department is notorious for mismanagement and financial irregularities, and claimed the Executive Officer currently overseeing the temple lacks a valid appointment order. He warned that the new tender could be a cover for misappropriation of public funds under the guise of renovation.

“This department, controlling temples without legal authority, seems to be using sanctioned funds for possibly unnecessary works. It raises serious red flags about misuse in the name of temple upkeep,” Ramesh wrote, urging transparency and accountability from the authorities.

In a recent legal victory for temple activist T.R. Ramesh, the Madras High Court has quashed a criminal case filed against him by the administrators of the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Chennai. The case, which Ramesh described as false, was initiated following allegations that he had instigated devotees at the temple on 31 August 2022.

Ramesh, however, has consistently denied the accusations, asserting that he was in Bangalore attending a family wedding at the time of the alleged incident, making it impossible for him to have been involved. The case was reportedly filed at the behest of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, which oversees temple administration in Tamil Nadu.

Following the filing of the case, Ramesh secured anticipatory bail in September 2022. His legal team, led by Senior Counsel Satish Parasaran, then filed a quash petition to have the charges dismissed.

The Kapaleeswarar Temple had previously been in the news when Ramesh raised questions about a proposed construction of a cultural center using temple funds, which he argued was against the rules. In May 2024, the Madras High Court put the construction on hold pending further hearings.

In June 2024, Ramesh has addressed correspondence to key officials of the Tamil Nadu government concerning Sri Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore. The temple, an ancient agamic structure for the Saiva Sampradaya and the Poonamalee Uyar Thuluva Vellalars sect, was relocated to its current site in the 16th century after the original temple was destroyed by Portuguese forces and replaced with San Thome church.

The activist raised concerns over the unlawful lease of temple land to the Women’s Indian Association in 2012, comprising 10 grounds at a nominal rent of ₹3000 per month for 29 years and 11 months. Despite objections by the Temple Worshippers Society, the lease was approved by the government via G.O. Ms. 77 dated 24 February 2011, which has not been rescinded to date. This lease has resulted in significant financial losses to the temple annually.

On 21 June 2024, renowned temple activist TR Ramesh has addressed correspondence to key officials of the Tamil Nadu government concerning Sri Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, Chennai.

TR Ramesh, President of the Temple Worshippers Society (TWS) in Chennai, alleged collusion and criminal neglect of duty against successive Secretaries, Commissioners, Executive Officers, and Trustees associated with the temple. The activist demanded the immediate actions of:

  • Cancelling G.O. No. 77, deemed void ab initio.
  • Evicting the Women’s Indian Association from the temple lands.
  • Initiating criminal complaints against the encroachers under Section 79-B of the Tamil Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1959.
  • Calculating and collecting commercial rent from the encroaching organization for the period since 1986, and subsequent rents from 2013 onwards, with responsibilities and liabilities distributed among relevant government officials.

In his official X account, he highlighted that the Tamil Nadu government and the HR&CE department attempted an unauthorized lease of 10 grounds of valuable land on Greenways Road, Chennai. Instead of the mandated ₹15 lakhs per month, the land was leased for a nominal ₹3000 per month, bypassing legal notice requirements under the HR&CE Act.

He noted that Radha Rajan, founder of  TWS, swiftly objected on 23 July 2012, with additional objections raised subsequently. By 13 February 2013, the Commissioner recommended cancelling the Government Order approving the lease. However, the G.O. has not been rescinded, and the organization encroaching on the temple land remains in place.

As a consequence, Sri Kapaleeshwarar Temple has suffered losses exceeding ₹20 crores in potential rental income over the past 11 years due to this unresolved issue, according to the temple activist. Ramesh criticized the government and the HR&CE department for allegedly withholding funds that could have supported Dharmic activities benefiting thousands of Hindus annually. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to reclaim these funds from those responsible for the purported mismanagement and negligence.

It has come to people’s attention that the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has allegedly declared a holiday on 17 June 2024, coinciding with the Muslim festival Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), also known as the Feast of Sacrifice.

It is noteworthy that according to the TN HRCE Act of 1959, there are no provisions empowering secular officials of the HR&CE Department to organize or supervise festivals in Hindu Temples. Even appointed Executive Officers are authorized solely to only manage temple properties. They have administrative powers limited to temple assets and no authority over religious functions, rituals, or festivals. Netizens criticized the government’s decision to grant leave for the celebration of another religion’s festival by the department as unfounded and inappropriate under the existing legal framework.

Temple activist TR Ramesh expressed his disapproval, stating, “The offices of the @tnhrcedept which illegally controls thousands of Hindu Religious Institutions in Tamil Nadu – which has placed 100s of its servants as Executive Officers in Hindu Temples – without any legally valid orders of appointments – ever issued are closed today due to Bakra EID also known Qurban Eid Just for your information. You cannot find more secular administrators of Temples elsewhere.

While the official website of the HR&CE department lacks circulars or orders in English beyond 2022 and in Tamil beyond 2023, it is difficult to definitively verify or refute the claim made by temple activists that TNHR&CE has declared a holiday for executives working within temple administration on Bakrid. It was pointed out that under the HRCE Act of 1959, Section 8 delineates the classes of authorities including the Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners, and Assistant Commissioners, with no mention of Executive Officers. Moreover, Section 10 of the Act specifies that all officers appointed under its purview must be followers of the Hindu religion and shall vacate their office upon ceasing to profess that faith. This highlights the Act’s explicitly non-secular nature as it mandates officials to be Hindu practitioners.

The seemingly endless string of arbitrary actions by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) department continues unabated. Adding to an already substantial list of grievances, the department has now appointed its executives to the management committee of Arulmigu Palaniandavar Arts College for Women in Palani. This move blatantly violates both the Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Act, 2018, and the Tamil Nadu Private Colleges (Regulation) Act, 1976.

Temple activist TR Ramesh, on 30 May 2024, issued a notice urging the Secretary of the Religious Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Commissioner to take action. Ramesh demands the removal of the Commissioner and all departmental personnel from the management committees of schools and colleges affiliated with Hindu temples.

In a letter addressed to the Secretary of the Government of Tamil Nadu, Tourism, Religious Endowments, and Culture Department at Fort St. George, Chennai 600 009, and The Commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department at Nungambakkam High Road, Chennai 600 034, TR Ramesh wrote, “Educational Institutions run by Hindu ‘Temples and Endowments and whose management is illegally controlled by the officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department — these officials are placed in the ‘Management Committees of such schools and colleges without any legal authority to do so – Imparting of instruction in the Hindu Religion, an essential purpose in starting such schools and colleges with temple/endowment funds and properties NOT carried out even after many years of inception of these schools and colleges. You are called upon to

  • (a) remove the Commissioner and all servants of the HR&CE Department from the Management Committees of schools and colleges belonging to Hindu Religious Institutions with immediate effect and leave the constitution of the appropriate management committee of schools and colleges with the trustees of the respective temples/endowments in accordance of the Private School Regulation Act, 2019 and in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Private Colleges Regulation Act, 1976 respectively
  • (b) Introduce stream of courses that carry out instructions in the Hindu Religion and particularly in the instructions pertaining to the religious denomination of the temples/ endowments to which such schools and colleges belong

Taking this matter to his official X account TR Ramesh stated, “I have today issued notice to Secretary – Religious Endowments Department – Government of Tamil Nadu and the Commissioner of @tnhrcedept to remove the Commissioner and all servants of the Department from the Management Committees of schools and colleges that belong to Hindu Temples. Besides occupying Hindu Temples by FRAUD for more than 70 years another serious violation of law and Hindu Dharma – carried out by the @tnhrcedept is the illegal occupation of the Management Committees of Schools and Colleges belonging to Hindu Schools.”

The instrumentalities of the HR&CE Department control every aspect of these educational institutions which are HINDU schools and colleges. They treat them as SECULAR institutions. According to the Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Act, 2018 and the Tamil Nadu Private Colleges (Regulation) Act, 1976 the Commissioner and the HR&CE officials have no authority to be present in the School and College Management Committees. The illegal management committees also get to decide appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff all administrative expenses and tenders for major works and purchases in the schools and colleges.“, he said.

These are naturally Capital Gains for those in power. The main reason of illegal occupation of Hindu schools and colleges by HR&CE officials. Another major fraud carried out by the Department is the denial of teaching HINDU Religion as a prime subject in these schools and colleges. This is a basic requirement in starting this colleges as per the TN HR&CE Act. Hon’ble Division Bench of the Madras High Court in its interim order dated 15.11.2021 in a PIL filed by me clearly stated that the pious purpose of the temples in starting the colleges should not be forgotten while giving general education. But as usual, TN Govt and the @tnhrcedept continue to violate the law and court orders. If they do NOT take appropriate action within 4 weeks, I shall file a Writ Petition seeking to remove the misfits from Management Committees of schools and Colleges of Hindu Temples.“, he further added.

(Screenshot From Official Page of Arulmigu Palaniandavar Arts College for Women)

Here it is disclosed that the president, correspondent, and all members of the management committee are executives from the HR&CE department. This echo concerns raised in a previous case by former idol wing IG Ponn Manickavel, who warned of widespread corruption when an entire administrative chain is solely managed by the department’s employees. In this instance, the college operates with funds from the Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple under the HR&CE and having the management committee comprised solely of department personnel goes against the principles of checks and balances and transparency.

Once again, TR Ramesh, a leading advocate for temple preservation, has cynically sounded the alarm regarding the purported absence of two ancient temples from the area earmarked by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department’s Integrated Temple Management Information System in Tiruvannamalai.

Tiruvannamalai, situated in Tamil Nadu, stands as a multifaceted city, blending spiritual and cultural significance. It boasts the revered Annamalaiyar temple, the majestic Annamalai hill, the ritualistic Girivalam, and the vibrant Karthigai Deepam festival, making it a focal point for pilgrims. Within its bounds lie 1472 temples, as reported by the HR&CE department.

Among these, two ancient temples, the Sri Idumban Temple and Sri Ilayanar Temple, hold distinct historical importance, bearing the MIS numbers 42925 and 42926, respectively.

These temples, purportedly located near the bus stand, are documented in the records of the HR&CE and uploaded in its website. To aid devotees in finding these sacred sites, GIS maps have been made available. However, temple activists have expressed dismay at the absence of actual temple images on the official website. Instead, the pictures for Ilayanar Temple shows a hardwards and paints shop while the Idumban temple pictures show a dilapidated build at the junction of the road.

This has led to concerns about the precarious situation of smaller lesser known local temple that are under the ambit of HR&CE.

On 15 April 2024, temple activist TR Ramesh formally notified the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu government and the Commissioner of HR&CE regarding discrepancies purportedly identified in the temple MIS system.

Despite his efforts, he has not received any response from the authorities. He indicated that if this issue remains unaddressed, he will pursue legal remedies.

TR Ramesh communicated this stance through his official X handle that, On 15th April I issued notice to TN Govt Secretary and @tnhrcedept Commissioner stating two ancient temples in Tiruvannamalai town are missing – It appears I am wrong – Not only has the @tnhrcedept website has given the temples’ GIS Maps – they have also given the “AMAZING ” Pictures of the temple said to be missing – The Temple numbers are – (a) Sri Idumban Temple – Integrated Temple Management System No. 42925 (b) Sri Ilayanar Temple – Integrated Temple Management System No. 42926 I have never seen temple pictures like these – simply amazing – Hey @tnhrcedept – Way to go – (that is…. the way to go and disappear… for Hindu temples under your control) These and more “pictures of the missing temples” are uploaded by the greatest administrators of Hindu Temples ever – THE TN HR&CE Department of Government of Tamil Nadu. hrce.tn.gov.in/hrcehome/templ And dont forget – this Govt charges Hindu Temples 16% of their income as Administration fees and audit fess – If you are not able to see the temples in these pictures – you must be lacking devotion. Perhaps this is why the Govt Secretary and the Commissioner of @tnhrcedept did not reply to my legal notice – The temples are there as evidenced by the “photos” posted by the Dept in its website. Still – I think I would be filing a Writ Petition seeking to know what happened to this and other missing temples

Prominent temple activist TR Ramesh has raised an alarm concerning the alleged illegal demolition of the historic fortified wall surrounding the ancient Sri Kallazhagar Temple, located in the wooded area of Azhagar Malai near Madurai.

Ramesh accused the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR and CE) department of the Tamil Nadu government, which has been in place since December 13, 1951, of unauthorized demolition under the guise of renovation.

Expressing his concerns on social media, Ramesh voiced apprehension about the potentially irreversible harm being done to the temple’s age and heritage values. The Kallazhagar Temple, with a history spanning over 15 centuries, is well-known for its impressive architectural features.

In a strongly-worded statement, Ramesh criticized what he perceives as the greed for money driving these alleged renovation efforts. He drew parallels between the current temple demolitions and historical figures like Aurangzeb and Hyder Ali, notorious for their acts of desecration.

Despite the Kallazhagar Temple drawing a large number of devotees during festivals, Ramesh highlighted a perceived lack of accountability and scrutiny regarding the destruction of the temple and its surroundings. He emphasized the importance of vigilance in preserving this sacred site.

He wrote, “The officials of the tnhrcedept – A Department that thrives on FRAUD and that is illegally present in Sri Kallazhagar Temple, Azhagarkoil near Madurai from 13.12.1951 – have started to demolish the heritage Fortified Wall of the temple in the name of Renovation. Sri Kallazhagar Temple set in Forest Area is an ancient temple that is more than 15 Centuries old. It is resplendent with wonderful works of architecture. The greed for money – and consequently carrying out unnecessary and unlawful Civil Works – with the temple funds – make corrupt officials and politicians inflict permanent damages to the antiquity and heritage values of extraordinary temples.

What is the difference between such demolishers of temples and the marauders of temples like Aurangzeb and Hyder Ali? The Bhagwan there draws lakhs of Devotees to His temple and His festivals. But no one to question the destruction of His Temple and its environs.”

Compulsive commentator and ‘neutral’ political analyst Dr. Sumanth C Raman who is known for commenting on everything under the sun, posted on X about the recent judgement of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court. The ruling which prevents non-Hindus to entering the temple has been critiqued by the left-liberals and Dravidian Stocks without knowing about the laws and history behind the issue. Dr. Sumanth Raman joined the bandwagon by posting on X, ‘Disagree with this. As long as the rules of the temple are followed, anyone must be allowed to visit and worship. Hindus worship at Velankanni and Nagoor in TN. Why shouldn’t other faiths visit Palani? Argument that temples are not picnic spots is valid. Except that the assumption that for all people of other faiths, visiting a temple is a picnic and for all Hindus it is a matter of faith, is absurd. Let us be honest. A large part of religious tourism is just tourism. This applies to all faiths not just Hindus. I know so many who visit our ancient temples to learn about our culture, marvel at the architecture etc. Why is that bad?

While superficially the argument might make sense but TR Ramesh, who was the original petitioner in the case, came out with his counterattack. In his reply to Sumanth Raman, TR Ramesh stated, ‘Non – Muslims are not allowed in the entire region of Mecca. Not just the Holy Mosque. We do not call it absurd. If one feels non-Hindus should be allowed inside Ancient Agamic Temples one should challenge the Tamil Nadu Temple Entry Authorisation Act, 1947.  Because this Govt Legislation clearly  BANS non-Hindus inside Tamil Nadu temples. In fact, allowing non-Hindus up to Kodi Maram or the Holy Mast is in violation of the Rules framed under the Act. Devotees visit various temples with devotion and faith. It’s called pilgrimage. It is not tourism. Temples were not built for tourism or picnics. Let’s not compare Hindus with those of Abrahamic faiths.

He further added in his reply some practices today which are against temple rules:

I have some questions regarding your observation “as long as the Rules of the temple are followed

1. Why are offices are built inside temples?

2. Why are Annadhanam halls built inside temples?

3.  Why are toilets built inside temples?

4. Why is temple money taken for HR&CE Dept expenses?

5. Why there are special Dharshans for persons paying extra money?

All above are against temple Rules.

Just a few examples to show Temple Rules will be never followed as long as the @tnhrcedept present in temples  only by FRAUD controls Hindu temples”

With these replies, Sumanth conceded, ‘Agree with you entirely that temple should be a place of sanctity and rules should not be violated.

This isn’t the first time Sumanth Raman has been compelled to comment on an issue without fully understanding it. The complete compilation of his compulsive commenting history is given below.

In January 2024, he criticized the India Today for being quoted by Israel at the ICJ in the Gaza deaths hearing. He said it was not a matter of pride but a shame.

He trivialised the petrol bomb attack at Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s residence in October 2023. Not only that, but he had written on his X handle that a petrol bomb attack did not indicate a breakdown of law and order. When a user raised concerns about the ease of obtaining such bombs, Raman responded by simplifying a petrol bomb as “petrol set alight with some cloth in a bottle and thrown.”

In March 2023, he spread fake news about NPCI charging a fee for UPI transactions without verifying its accuracy. After the National Payments Corporation of India clarified that the charges applied only to Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) and not to UPI transactions, Sumanth deleted his tweet. He then acknowledged the misinformation and stated that the fee was only for transactions through wallets and credit cards, not bank debits.

In May 2021, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic (Delta variant second wave), he questioned the efficacy of the DRDO-developed 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) drug for COVID-19, labelling it as ‘unproven stuff.’

In April 2021, after actor Vivekh suffered a heart attack, Raman attempted to raise concerns about COVID-19 vaccination by suggesting a potential link between the vaccination and the actor’s illness, prompting backlash. He had also tried to raise “concerns” about the COVAXIN vaccine and question its efficacy, despite the vaccine receiving approval from regulatory authorities in India.

As recently as the 22 January 2024 Pran Prathishta event, Sumanth Raman made a post implying that if it had not been for the demolition of Babri Masjid, there wouldn’t be so much fanfare associated with the consecration today. He also said that the celebrations were nothing but, ‘stoking a community into feeling they have got retribution’.
