Police have arrested the president of the Samalapuram Town Panchayat, affiliated with the DMK, on charges of deliberately killing a local social activist by ramming his car into the victim’s two-wheeler.

The arrested official, identified as 60-year-old Vinayaka Palanisamy, allegedly struck down 57-year-old activist Palanisamy of Karugampalayam on the evening of September 10 near the Karugampalayam Government Primary School, along the Samalapuram–Karanampettai Road. Eyewitnesses said the victim was riding a two-wheeler when he was hit from behind by a speeding car, thrown off, and fatally injured. The accused reportedly fled the scene without stopping.

Initially booked as a traffic accident, the case took a serious turn after Mangalam police traced the vehicle to the Panchayat president. Investigations revealed that the deceased had earlier filed a petition with the Tiruppur District Collector opposing a Panchayat-funded road project allegedly meant for the private benefit of an individual. The suspension of this project reportedly created enmity between the activist and the chairman.

Police now suspect that the killing was an act of retaliation. Officers also stated that the chairman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Based on these findings, the case has been altered from accidental death to murder under IPC Section 302.

The activist’s son has accused the DMK chairman of repeatedly threatening his father and demanded his immediate removal from both party and office. “My father only asked that public money be spent for the public. For this, he lost his life,” he said.

The body of the activist has been sent for postmortem at Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, Vinayaka Palanisamy remains in judicial custody as further investigations continue.

On 11 September 2025, police arrested the president of the Samalapuram Town Panchayat in Tiruppur district, affiliated with the DMK, on suspicion of deliberately killing a local activist by ramming his car into the victim’s two-wheeler.

According to police reports, the Town Panchayat president, identified as 60-year-old Vinayagam Palanisamy, allegedly struck down 57-year-old social activist Palanisamy from Karugampalayam. The incident occurred on the evening of 10 September near the Karugampalayam Government Primary School, along the Samalapuram-Karnampettai Road. The activist, who was riding a two-wheeler, was hit from behind by a car, thrown off the vehicle, and died at the scene.

Initially treated as a traffic accident, the case took a turn during the investigation led by the Mangalam police, who traced the vehicle involved to the Town Panchayat president. Further inquiries revealed a possible motive: the activist had previously submitted a petition to the Tiruppur District Collector, criticizing a local road project initiated by the Town Panchayat. Following the complaint, the project was suspended, allegedly causing friction between the two.

Police now suspect that the Panchayat president, reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, intentionally targeted the activist in retaliation for halting the road work. The investigation remains ongoing.

In response to the incident, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran condemned the event via his official X account stating, “The news that DMK town panchayat president, Palanisamy, ran over and killed a social activist in Tiruppur for complaining against the laying of a tar road in a place that is not useful to the public is very shocking. If the mistakes of the Dravidian model government are pointed out, will death be the reward? Does the single identity of being a ‘DMK person’ and the power of office give one the right to take a life? When such crimes come to light, arrests are made only for the sake of eyewash, but they continue like the ‘Kannithivu’ serial. DMK members should be ashamed to boast about ‘good governance praised by the country’ after making people’s lives hell for four years and taking the lives of those who raise their voices against it!”

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced an additional allocation of ₹1 lakh crore for highway projects in Tamil Nadu during his visit to Thanjavur on 13 September 2024. While inspecting the four-lane Cholapuram-Thanjavur and Sethiyathope-Cholapuram sections of the 164 km Vikravandi-Kumbakonam-Thanjavur bypass, being built at a cost of ₹4,730 crore, Gadkari emphasized the government’s commitment to infrastructure development in the state.

“We have a total of 71 upcoming projects spanning 2,781 km, with an estimated cost of ₹1 lakh crore in Tamil Nadu. The BJP government has already spent ₹2 lakh crore on highway projects across the state since 2014,” Gadkari stated. He further highlighted that ongoing projects were valued at Rs 60,000 crore, while completed projects totalled ₹50,000 crores.

Gadkari also provided updates on the four-laning of NH381A, which covers a 70 km stretch from Vellakoil to Sankagiri at a cost of ₹2,000 crore. The highway is crucial for linking the districts of Tirupur, Erode, and Salem, passing through Sankagiri, Vepathai, Modakkurichi, Erode, Vilakkethi, and Muthur. He noted that the tender for this project will be issued within three months.

National Highway 381A, commonly known as NH 381A, connects NH-81 near Vellakoil with NH-544 near Sankagiri through Erode. The route passes through Muthur, Kandasmypalayam, Vilakkethi (Sivagiri), Modakkurichi, Erode, and Pallipalayam before terminating at NH-544 near Sankagiri.

Acknowledging Tamil Nadu’s cooperation in implementing road projects, Gadkari highlighted the challenges faced in land acquisition, noting that much of the land to be acquired in the state is fertile, which causes delays. He admitted that the bypass project, which began in 2018, was delayed by four years and one month due to various factors, though he refrained from assigning blame.

Expressing satisfaction with the quality of the road, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering time-bound, result-oriented, and corruption-free projects. Gadkari also announced that the third phase of the Vikravandi-Kumbakonam-Thanjavur bypass project in Tamil Nadu would begin soon with a new contractor, after the previous tender, awarded to a company owned by Anil Ambani, was terminated.

Three Bangladeshi nationals, who were staying in Tiruppur without proper documents, have been ordered to be sent back to their home country.

Mohammed Kabir Hussain(34), Mohammed Azad Mia(28) and Mohammed Rishad Mullah(29) were arrested by Tamil Nadu police during a regular patrol in the Tiruppur district, last year. They were residing in Kuppaiyankadu near Anupparpalayam and were working in the neighbourhood. They were caught because they didn’t have any documents to justify their presence.

Police booked them under the Foreigners Act and lodged in Central Prison in Chennai. The case was heard by the Tiruppur district court which has ordered authorities to deport the 3 Bangladeshis.

Thier arrest was reported by The Hindu, last year. The report says, ‘The three men on the street started running after seeing the police. When they were caught and inquired, they confessed to the police that they were immigrants from Bangladesh and working in a garment company in Tiruppur without proper documents such as passport and visa”.

Tiruppur being a textile district, has become a safe haven for illegal immigrants as it attracts people from all parts of the country in search of employment. Bangladeshis who enter India illegally, obtain government-issued identity documents with the help of agents who arrange for their passage and gobble up resources meant for Bharatiyas. They easily pass themselves off as residents of West Bengal and indulge in crimes. In February, TN police issued a security alert after Bangladeshis who illegally entered Bharat holding legit passports and other documents obtained through illegal means.

The security alert was issued after a majority of them were caught indulging in criminal activities. A police officer in the know of the things informed The Hindu that “A majority of the illegal immigrants are in the 20-35 age group and vulnerable to brainwashing by extremist elements. It is possible that they could be recruited by terrorist organisations to execute their evil designs”.

In January, a Bangladeshi national trying to pass off as a Bharatiya was caught by immigration officials at Coimbatore airport. He had a valid passport and Aadhar card, but officials became suspicious as the address mentioned in both documents was in Kolkata. He gave contradictory answers during the investigation and was caught when the officials asked him to sing the national anthem. He illegally entered Bharat through West Bengal and worked in TN as a tailor till 2020. Later he went to UAE and returned to Coimbatore with the hopes of settling down in the state.

The Hindu Munnani has submitted a petition to the Municipal Commissioner, requesting to drop the scheme of erecting electric poles on the middle of the road, making it difficult for the temple Chariot to pass during festivals, near Udumalaipettai, Tirupur. In addition, they have also requested that the lights be placed in the side of the roads, in a way that it does not obstruct the path of the Temple Chariot.

There is a well known Mariamman temple in Madathukulam, near Udumalaipettai, Tirupur district. One of the most popular temples in the area, the temple conducts its annual chariot festival (Ther thiruvizha) in the Tamil month of Panguni. Not only local devotees, but devotees from around the area come to worship the deity during the Chariot festival.

The Udumalai Municipality is carrying out the work of erecting a power pole in the middle of the central barrier being set up on the Pollachi National Highway. There has been heavy opposition that such an electric pole will be an obstruction to the Chariot festival, which is an important feature of the temple festival.

For this reason, members of the Hindu Munnani met with the Municipal Commissioner and submitted a petition requesting to erect the electric poles on both sides of the road, instead of the center, so that the festival is not disturbed.  The public have also opposed this scheme, pointing out that several devotees will be flocking together for the festival and the power pole will be an obstruction for them as well.

An attempt is being made to occupy temple land worth crores of rupees and divide into houses for sale, in Tirupur. There are several acres of land belonging to the Subramania Swamy temple at Nachiyapalayam, Kangayam Road, Tirupur. There are 2.47 acres of land under Survey no. 105.

This land has been leased to a private individual under the Tamil Nadu Inam Estates (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act. The individual prepared a bond for the land and sold it. Currently, in order to divide the land into houses for sale, levelling work is being done. At the current market value, the land is worth ₹10 crore.

There is opposition from the devotees of the temple for dividing the land into houses for sale. Devotees have requested the government that the land should not be divided into residential plots for sale, that the Patta (bond) issued in private name should be cancelled and that the temple land should only be used for temple related purposes.

With regard to this issues, the officials of the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments have said, “This land was donated to the temple in 1912. In 1968, the lease was granted to a private individual under the Tamil Nadu Inam Estates (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act. The registrar has been informed currently that the land should not be registered.”

A couple from Tirupur in Tamilnadu have won hearts after they donated ₹37 lakh from their wedding fund for COVID relief. Anu and Arul Pranesh from Tirupur had originally estimated their wedding budget at a whopping ₹50 lakh. But, on June 14, they decided to get married on a ₹13 lakh budget.

This decision was not just influenced by their philanthropic nature, but also by the fact that a lot of the wedding guests were apprehensive to attend because of the COVID restrictions and fear of infections.

Noticing these discrepancies, Arul Pranesh, who runs his family business of selling plastic products, had conferred with his bride-to-be. They had then decided that this would be the right decision, and reduced their wedding budget. “Even the wedding hall owner returned our rental advance,” he recalled. “However, as the family elders decided not to postpone the wedding, we got married at the Vattamalai Angalamman temple with minimal attendance after taking permission from local authorities.”

It is to be noted that their family is a member of the Rotary Club of Tirupur and regularly engage in philanthropic activities and give out donations for various charities.

In Tirupur, a huge controversy erupted over a ceremonious death procession held for a criminal offender despite the lockdown, as hundreds of his friends and kin conducted a procession, throwing social distancing norms to the air. This was the death procession of Samsudeen, who was killed in a clash over the distribution of loot money.

Samsudeen, a native of Tirupur MGR Colony, has been charged with various offences including attempted murder and burglary. He was killed in a clash between his accomplices on the day of the crime. Despite numerous lawsuits against Samsudeen, his friends gathered in large numbers and carried his body in a procession from the Tirupur Government Hospital. There were no police found to be present to control them.

When Samsudeen’s body was handed over after the autopsy, the crowd followed the ambulance in a long two-wheeler procession. The procession went as far as Tirupur’s MGR Colony, with no police in sight, despite the increasing number of COVID cases in Tirupur.

His supporters have videotaped the scenes and shared them on social media with background music praising the dead Samsudeen as if he was a fallen hero. Meanwhile, police say Samsudeen’s accomplices Karthikeyan and others have been arrested in connection with the murder.

An incident has taken place near Palladam in Tiruppur district where devotees stopped some individuals from trying to get a lease for a temple property worth ₹ 20 crores.

The 400-year-old Karivaratharaja Perumal Temple is located at Kalivelampatti near Palladam in Tirupur District. The temple is now in ruins as it lacks proper maintenance. The Karivaratharaja Perumal temple owns 3.5 acres of land in the nearby villages of Kalivelampatti and 6.5 acres in Sukkampalayam.

Devotees in the area have said that all the primary documents note that these are the property of the temple and that some people are trying to get a lease by attaching their name to the chitta for the temple land which was given as a reward by monarchs. They said the total assets of the temple that the encroacher were trying to occupy would be worth up to ₹ 20 crores.

The encroachers have erected a fence on the temple land and gotten an electrical connection. Venkatesh, Assistant Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, has advised the Revenue Department not to lease the temple land. Following this, the power supply to the temple land has been cut off. An official of the HR&CE Department said that the details of the lands given to the temple were withheld by the Revenue Department officials and they could not collect the full details of the temple property.
