The simmering tensions between the ruling DMK and its alliance partner Congress have sharpened further in the backdrop of Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin’s categorical rejection of power-sharing arrangements ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Stalin had recently stated that a power-sharing formula with the Congress would not be “suitable” for Tamil Nadu’s political and administrative framework, effectively shutting the door on the Congress party’s long-standing demand for a share in governance should the alliance return to power.

Following this, Congress leaders have stepped up pressure on the DMK leadership, publicly reiterating demands for both ministerial participation in a future government and an increase in seat allocation for the Assembly polls.

Senior Congress figures, including Manickam Tagore and Praveen Chakravarty, have voiced strong responses in recent days. Their remarks come amid continued criticism and political jibes directed at the Congress by certain DMK functionaries. Leaders such as DMK MLA Ko Thalapathy and minister Raja Kannappan have, on multiple occasions, made dismissive or mocking comments about the Congress party’s electoral strength and bargaining position within the alliance.

Adding a fresh political layer to the ongoing friction, DMK MP Tiruchi Siva on 16 February 2026, shared a social media post recalling his arrest during the Emergency period. He noted that on 16 February 1976, exactly fifty years ago, he had been detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) while he was pursuing his final year MA.

While the post was framed as a personal remembrance of the Emergency era, political observers view its timing as significant, given the Congress party’s historical association with the Emergency imposed between 1975 and 1977.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva while speaking in the Parliament questioned what he described as the neglect of Tamil freedom fighters in North India, framing it as a historical injustice.

Raising the issue, he asked whether there were roads or streets in North India named after Tamil icons such as VO Chidambaram Pillai or Mahakavi Subramania Bharati. He further questioned whether people outside Tamil Nadu even knew who Veerapandiya Kattabomman was. Tiruchi Siva also claimed that Tamils were ignored despite their contributions to the freedom struggle and asserted that it was a Tamil, Chempakaraman, who first coined the slogan “Jai Hind.”

He said, “Is there anywhere in North India a VO Chidambaranar Road? Is there a Bharatiyar Street? Does anyone there even know who Veerapandiya Kattabomman is? Please tell me, why were we ignored? The question to ask is this: we were the ones who first coined the slogan “Jai Hind” – it was Chempakaraman who did that.”

The remarks were projected as a defence of Tamil pride and a call for national recognition of Tamil freedom fighters.

The Record The DMK Does Not Mention

While Tiruchi Siva’s questions drew attention in Parliament, they have also prompted scrutiny of the DMK’s own actions in Tamil Nadu, particularly when it had full control over naming public institutions, erecting statues, and institutionalising remembrance.

VO Chidambaram Pillai And The Tirunelveli Bus Stand

There is no dispute anywhere in India about VO Chidambaram Pillai’s stature. He is widely recognised as a pioneering leader of the Swadeshi movement and a central figure in Tamil Nadu’s freedom struggle. Tirunelveli, in particular, is inseparably associated with him, he practised law there, organised labour there, and it was there that public protests erupted after his arrest.

Yet, when a new modern bus stand was constructed in Tirunelveli under the Centre-funded Smart City scheme, the DMK government chose to name it the Periyar Bus Stand, after E.V. Ramasamy.

This decision was taken despite public demands that the bus stand be named after VO Chidambaram Pillai.

The choice raised an obvious question: what historical or personal connection did EV Ramasamy have with Tirunelveli district that outweighed that of VOC? The DMK has never provided a convincing answer.

Tirunelveli’s Freedom Struggle Legacy

Tirunelveli occupies a distinct place in the freedom movement. During protests following VOC’s arrest, Sub-Collector Ashe ordered firing on demonstrators, killing four people. In retaliation, revolutionary Vanchinathan assassinated Ashe. This episode is central to Tamil revolutionary history in the Indian national movement.

Despite this legacy, the most prominent modern public infrastructure in Tirunelveli was named not after VOC, but after EV Ramasamy Naicker (hailed as ‘Periyar’ by his followers) highlighting a pattern where Dravidian ideological icons are prioritised over freedom fighters.

Jai Hind Chempakaraman: Invoked, But Not Honoured

Tiruchi Siva’s reference to “Jai Hind” being coined by Chempakaraman has also drawn attention to another contradiction. If Jaihind Chempakaraman is indeed as significant as claimed, having influenced Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and participated in revolutionary activities, then the obvious question arises: where is his public memorialisation in Tamil Nadu?

Across the State, statues of EV Ramasamy are ubiquitous – at junctions, traffic circles, and public spaces, you name it! By contrast, Jai Hind Chempakaraman has just one statue, located near the Gandhi Mandapam complex in Chennai, an area where statues are placed away from every day public visibility.

But such a great warrior – who, during the Second World War, brought the ship Emden from Germany, carried out a surgical strike here, attacked only the British and made them tremble, is forgotten.

Even at the Chennai High Court complex, near the spot where Chempakaraman threw a bomb during the freedom struggle, there exists only a small memorial stone. There is no prominent statue that would prompt public curiosity or historical awareness.

Demands have been raised for a statue to be installed at that very site so that people can learn why that location matters. That demand, too, has not been acted upon.

A Pattern, Not An Accident

The pattern extends beyond individuals. Tamil freedom fighters such as VO Chidambaram Pillai, Jaihind Chempakaraman, Kuyili, and Mahakavi Bharatiyar travelled across India, worked with leaders from other regions, and grounded their struggle in Indian nationalism.

Yet the ideological framework the DMK promotes, Dravidianism, has historically distanced itself from Indian nationalism. EV Ramasamy himself opposed the freedom movement and rejected the idea of Indian independence as unnecessary.

This contradiction becomes sharper when DMK leaders speak of honouring freedom fighters while continuing to centre public memory around a figure who openly rejected the freedom struggle.

Recognition Outside Tamil Nadu Vs Silence Within

Contrary to the impression suggested in Parliament, Mahakavi Bharathiyar has been honoured outside Tamil Nadu, including street names in Delhi and academic chairs in universities abroad, sponsored with central support. Tamil names appear on signage in several parts of North India, and Bharathiyar’s legacy is acknowledged nationally.

The more uncomfortable question, however, is why Tamil Nadu itself, under decades of DMK rule, has failed to consistently honour its own freedom fighters in prominent public spaces.

A Question That Turns Inward

Tiruchi Siva asked Parliament why Tamil freedom fighters were ignored elsewhere. The record suggests a more immediate question: why have they been marginalised at home?

If the DMK had named major institutions after VO Chidambaram Pillai, erected visible statues of Jaihind Chempakaraman, and foregrounded nationalist freedom fighters rather than ideological icons, its moral authority on this issue would have been stronger.

Instead, the contrast remains stark. Tamil freedom fighters are invoked rhetorically, but Dravidian ideologues dominate Tamil Nadu’s public landscape.

And that contradiction, more than anything said in Parliament, continues to define the debate.

After senior Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Rahul Gandhi gave clean chits to Pakistan by downplaying its role in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva has added his voice to the chorus, ridiculing the evidence presented by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament, which identified the slain terrorists as Pakistani nationals.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Tiruchi Siva took a sarcastic tone while questioning the validity of the Home Minister’s claims. Referring to Shah’s statement that Pakistani voter ID cards and Pakistan-made chocolates were found with the terrorists, Siva said, “When Mr. Chidambaram asked the honorable member, senior member, Home Minister was replying, he was asking, “Where did they come from? Are they from Pakistan or India?” Oh, you are supporting the terrorist. No, not at all. Just give us a proof, where they were from. And now they have been shot dead. Who are the three? Are they the same three terrorists? What is the proof? You have to tell us. And one proof, Home Minister said, “Sir, two proofs sir. Sir, not even one. One is voter ID card.” Which, I think the SIR will not accept as a proof of validity for citizenship. He showed, told that voter ID proved that he was a citizen of Pakistan and the chocolates they have were manufactured, made by Pakistan. Sir, these pens are from China. It is written in Chinese. Will you call me a Chinese person? Maybe. Am I, am I a Chinese citizen? Something, I, I don’t understand.”

Siva’s comments echoed earlier remarks by Congress leader P Chidambaram, who had cast doubt on Pakistan’s involvement during a media interaction following the attack. His statement, widely criticized, was later defended by the Congress as having been “misunderstood.”

The comments from both Congress and its ally, the DMK, come in the wake of Operation Mahadev, a counterterrorism operation in which the Indian Army neutralized three heavily armed militants involved in the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the brutal killing of 26 Hindu pilgrims in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran Valley.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had briefed Parliament on the operation, emphasizing that concrete evidence such as Pakistani identification documents and products linked the terrorists to Pakistan. He called for national unity in condemning cross-border terrorism.

Meanwhile, in the Lok Sabha, parts of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s speech during the debate on Operation Sindoor were expunged from the record after he directly blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the attack. His remarks were seen by many as undermining the military operation and offering, albeit indirectly, a clean chit to Pakistan.

Critics argue that such statements from Congress and its allies risk weakening India’s position on cross-border terrorism and downplaying the role of Pakistan-based groups responsible for attacks on Indian soil.

Amid recent backlash of DMK Deputy General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva  over comments about the late Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, an old video from 7 February 1986, featuring former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has resurfaced on social media. In the unverified video, Karunanidhi speaks the same about Kamaraj and shares an anecdote highlighting their political rivalry and personal courtesy.

In the footage, Karunanidhi himself recounts how he took steps to support Kamaraj during his travels, even when Kamaraj was openly critical of the DMK government.

Karunanidhi explains in the video that after taking over the leadership of the DMK following the era of Anna, he was informed by Rajaram Naidu that Kamaraj, while campaigning in remote and hot regions, was struggling with the heat. Despite their political differences, Karunanidhi said he personally arranged for air conditioners to be installed at Kamaraj’s lodging locations to ensure his comfort and health. Karunanidhi adds that although Kamaraj was actively opposing the DMK at the time, it was the DMK that took care of him. He concluded by saying that loyal and appreciative Congress leaders, including Thevar, would recognize this gesture.

He says, “They have said that Chief Minister Karunanidhi performed the final rites for Perunthalaivar Kamaraj, just as how Kamaraj’s own brother would have done. I would also like to add something else. During the period when Perunthalaivar Kamaraj was alive, and after Anna, when I took charge of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, Perunthalaivar Kamaraj was touring various places, criticizing the DMK rule. At that time, due to Kamaraj’s inability to withstand the heat and the discomfort caused by the scorching sun, he had to travel to outer villages for campaigning. However, the places where he stayed did not have air-conditioning facilities. Therefore, Rajaram Naidu informed me that arrangements needed to be made for this. Even though Kamaraj was traveling to criticize the DMK, it was I, Karunanidhi, who ordered air conditioners to be installed in every lodge where he stayed, keeping his health in mind. Thevar and all good, grateful Congress members will certainly acknowledge this.”

The Tamil Nadu Nadar Sangam has issued a strong condemnation of DMK Deputy General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva following his controversial remarks about the late former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. Speaking at a DMK party gathering in Perambur, Siva alleged that Kamaraj couldn’t sleep without air conditioning and praised former DMK leader Karunanidhi for ensuring AC was installed wherever Kamaraj stayed, a comment widely seen as a bid to elevate Karunanidhi at Kamaraj’s expense.

Reacting sharply to this, Tamil Nadu Nadar Sangam President Muthu Rameshu Nadar released a video statement, calling the remarks defamatory and deeply disrespectful to the legacy of Perunthalaivar Kamaraj.

In his statement, Rameshu Nadar demanded immediate action from the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, saying,Trichy Siva, a DMK Rajya Sabha member and DMK Deputy General Secretary, has spoken in a manner that taints the fame of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar and has spoken slanderously about him. On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Nadar Sangam and the followers of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar, we express our strong condemnation to him. We urge the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to immediately remove Trichy Siva from his party position and his Member of Parliament position. Both positions must be removed.” He further added that the remarks warrant criminal action, “Furthermore, as he had spoke slanderously about Perunthalaivar Kamarajar, we demand that he be arrested and imprisoned. We request that you take these actions immediately. Failing that, we wish to state that crores of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar’s followers will launch a massive protest.”

What Exactly Did Tiruchi Siva Say?

During the party meeting, Tiruchi Siva shared an anecdote allegedly told to him by late DMK leader Karunanidhi. He recounted, “When I was around 23 or 24, Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) would take me in his car and recount some events. Some people would question why he was telling these things to a young kid. But he knew I would speak about them in public meetings and convey them effectively to the people. He would tell me many such stories. One day, he told me this, ‘Kamarajar has organized condemnation meetings all over Tamil Nadu against electricity shortage. Kamarajar would get an allergy if he didn’t have air conditioning. So, he (Karunanidhi) ordered that all the visitors’ bungalows where he stayed be equipped with air conditioning. Even though he (Kamaraj) was speaking against him, considering his health, I made sure all those bungalows had air conditioning.”

Siva then shared another story from the Emergency period, “During the Emergency, they were desperate to arrest him but couldn’t do it in Tamil Nadu. Just then, he was about to leave for an event in Tirupati. A message went from the Chief Minister’s office, saying, ‘Please don’t go to Tirupati.’ He retorted, ‘I’m not a DMK member; I’m a Congress member, Who is he to tell me that tell me I can’t go?’ Then, he told, ‘I’m not a DMK leader, I’m the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. My order is that you shouldn’t go there.’ Immediately, he shot back, ‘What? You’re ordering me? I’m the one who gave up that chair! Is this guy so big that he can order me around? I’m going!’ So, thalaivar called Rajaram Naidu and said, ‘Please make him understand. I’m not a big shot who can order him around. There’s nothing above him. The Central Government is desperate to arrest him. As long as he’s within Tamil Nadu’s borders, I will protect him. If he crosses this border and goes to Tirupati, which is in Andhra, I won’t be able to save him if they arrest him. That’s why I asked him not to go.’ It was only then that he (Kamaraj) said, ‘I spoke without understanding him. He has such a big heart. ‘ Finally, holding his hand, before his death, he said, ‘You are the one who must save this country and democracy.’”

These remarks, especially the insinuation about Kamaraj’s reliance on air conditioning, have not sat well with the public or political observers. Many see it as an attempt to undermine Kamaraj’s image as a selfless and simple leader a portrayal that has stood the test of time across party lines.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and actor-politician Vijay has come under criticism for maintaining silence over controversial remarks made by DMK MP and Deputy General Secretary Tiruchi N. Siva against former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, despite Kamarajar being declared as one of TVK’s ideological icons.

During a DMK meeting in Perambur, Tiruchi Siva claimed that Kamaraj required air conditioning to sleep, and further alleged that the former Chief Minister, on his deathbed, held M. Karunanidhi’s hand and told him to “save the country and democracy.” These claims were widely criticised across the political spectrum, with many accusing Siva of distorting history to elevate Karunanidhi’s legacy while undermining Kamaraj’s austere public image.

Despite the backlash, Vijay and TVK have issued no statement condemning the remarks. Critics have noted the stark contrast between Vijay’s earlier outrage when leaders made remarks about Periyar (EVR), another ideological icon claimed by TVK, and his current silence regarding Kamaraj.

Condemned UPSC For Mentioning EV Ramasamy Naicker’s Original Name In Prelims Question Paper

At an event hosted by his political party in May 2025, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), actor-turned-part-time politician Vijay criticized the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for including a question in a civil services exam that referred to E.V. Ramasamy Naicker (EVR) by his full name, including the caste-indicative suffix “Naicker.” Vijay described the inclusion as offensive and deeply condemnable.

He said, “Even in recent times, attempts are being made to associate casteist labels with Periyar. In the latest UPSC exam, a question was asked that framed him along caste lines. We strongly condemn this.”

Political observers have pointed out the inconsistency, accusing Vijay of ideological opportunism. They argue that Vijay’s selective responses reveal a political calculation rather than a principled stance, especially when both EVR and Kamaraj are prominently featured in the party’s stated value framework.

Several social media users and opposition leaders have called out the actor-politician’s silence as a betrayal of the very values TVK claims to uphold. Some users noted that when Periyar was criticised, Vijay reacted publicly and swiftly, but when Kamaraj was insulted by a senior DMK leader, his silence has been deafening.

For the past three days, DMK’s unofficial IT wing has been working overtime to defend Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva while simultaneously launching a smear campaign against the late Chief Minister K. Kamaraj on social media.

DMK Deputy General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva came under heavy fire from netizens and political circles alike after making disparaging remarks about former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj during a party meeting in Perambur. Siva claimed that Kamaraj couldn’t sleep without air conditioning and credited the late DMK leader Karunanidhi for installing one for him, an attempt to glorify Karunanidhi while undermining Kamaraj’s legacy.

The comments sparked outrage, as they struck a nerve with many who revere Kamaraj as one of Tamil Nadu’s most selfless leaders. The backlash online was swift and unforgiving, with many demanding an unconditional apology from Siva and calling on the DMK to hold him accountable.

Yet, while public anger mounted, Dravidianist social media handles sprang into action spinning narratives to justify Siva’s comments and doubling down by attempting to mock and discredit Kamaraj further.

One such voice, a Dravidianist goes by the name ‘Kabilan,’ posted an unverified old photograph of a bedroom with an air conditioner, claiming it was Kamaraj’s. In a sarcastic tone, he wrote, “In the lineage of Kakkan – Jeeva – Bharathiyar, they’ve finally broken Kamaraj’s furniture,” implying that some hidden truth had been revealed. He added mockingly, “There was an air conditioner in the house where he lived.”

Another self-proclaimed Pro-Dravidianist simp named ‘Schumy Vanna Kaviyangal’ publicly ridiculed former Chief Minister Kamarajar by sharing a morphed image like caricature. This action was reportedly aimed to mock Kamarajar and silence the protests of Congress Karur MP Jothimani, who had criticized DMK MP Tiruchi Siva’s recent comments about Kamarajar.

Yet another pro-Dravidianist simp, ‘U2Brutus’, buttressed DMK MP Siva’s speech and delivered a moralistic sermon to Congress, stating, “This is what brother Trichy Siva Anna spoke. I don’t see anything wrong in it, nor do I feel there is even an iota of intention to demean our revered leader. I don’t understand why Sister Jyothimani and brother Selvaperunthagai are reacting like this. What was the Congress’s counter-reaction to Seeman, who spoke degradingly about Sister Jyothimani?”

A Dravidianist who goes by the name ‘Alien’, shared an alleged video of Tamilaruvi Maniyan, in which he states, “Even Kamarajar couldn’t live without air conditioning in his final days.” Alongside the video, ‘Alien’ remarked, “Listen to Thamizharuvi Manian, who runs a party in Kamarajar’s name. This is all well-known fact to the older generation. What’s the big deal about AC? It is a well-known and very common facts back then that Kamarajar smoked and Anna used snuff. After Kamarajar’s time, the media continuously spun stories like “when he traveled by car,” and a generation from a landlord-like party grew up reading only that. They know neither Kamarajar nor Kalaignar. They’re just using this opportunity to assert their presence and put on a show of loyalty to party predecessors, that’s all.”

Another Dravidianist going by the name ‘Dravidian Vision’ opined, “What MP Trichy Siva said is true. It was Leader Kalaignar who instructed that air conditioning be arranged in the government hostels where Perundhalaivar Kamaraj stayed. Kalaignar himself confirmed this on Facebook.”

Another Dravidianist sympathizer, in reference to DMK MP Siva’s speech, stated, “Nowhere, did he mention anything wrong about Kamarajar? It just shows the bond between the two leaders. It highlights the respect and regard Kalaignar had for Kamarajar, and the affection Kamarajar had for Kalaignar. Is this why these blind, Congress landlords and new backward-thinkers are jumping around?”

Another Dravidianist sympathizer mocked saying, “Why are they so shy about saying a former Chief Minister had AC? Is it because they can no longer spin tales about him being a simple man? Congress has always meant landlords, right from the old days. Now, fairy tale stories won’t work. Understand the reality and do some fieldwork, folks.”

Another Dravidianist sympathizer mocked saying, “When someone says Kamarajar slept with AC… they start wailing that he’s been disgraced. When someone who takes a private flight to attend an actress’s wedding is called “Young Kamarajar,” they shut up. Who the hell are you guys?”

Another Dravidianist sympathizer virtue signaled asking, “Why can’t they accept the simple truth that a person who was Chief Minister twice and one of the country’s foremost leaders was in such a physical state in his final days that he couldn’t sleep without AC?What kind of disgrace has befallen Kamarajar’s reputation because of this? Furthermore, @tiruchisiva clearly stated that it wasn’t for luxury, but due to his health, that he had that need. This information was even shared with the intention of explaining how much leader Kalaignar cared for Kamarajar’s health. It’s disgusting to see some people in the Congress party engaging in cheap politics by taking a statement made with a pure heart.”

A Dravidianist sympathizer followed suit by sharing old social media post by former Chief Minister Karunanidhi and old AC room picture to justify DMK MP Tiruchi Siva’s recent statements.

This coordinated attempt to rewrite the legacy of a respected leader has not gone unnoticed and it’s only adding fuel to the fire.

In just nine years, Kamaraj achieved what most political parties couldn’t do in any decades. He led a life of simplicity and integrity, prioritizing public welfare over personal comfort a legacy no one in power today has dared to match.

Since Tiruchi Siva’s remarks, social media has been abuzz with backlash, with users mocking him both personally and politically. Many demanded a formal apology and called on the DMK leadership to take strict action against him.

Even Congress MLA Rajesh Kumar subtly criticized Tiruchi Siva, remarking, “Tiruchi Siva said Kamaraj won’t sleep without AC. But everyone knows who can’t sleep without whom.” While refraining from a direct attack, he added, “Considering coalition ethics, I have to register my condemnation courteously.”

However, he didn’t hold back entirely, warning, “I want to state that individuals like Trichy Siva, who lack personal integrity and are enjoying power through the back door without meeting the people or making way for younger generations, will face severe consequences if they continue to speak about Karmaveerar Kamarajar.

Meanwhile, netizens took the gloves off, resurfacing a viral 2016 incident in which former AIADMK MP Sasikala Pushpa slapped Tiruchi Siva. Pictures of the two available online shows them being in some form of close relationship. With biting sarcasm, many said, “If Kamaraj couldn’t sleep without AC, then Siva can’t sleep without S**ikala P*sh*a.”

DMK Deputy General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva has stirred a major political controversy following remarks made during a party meeting in Perambur, Chennai, where he made contested claims about late Congress leader and former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj.

Speaking at the gathering, Siva asserted that Kamaraj, shortly before his death, had held the hand of then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and urged him to “save the country and democracy.” He also made claims about Kamaraj’s personal preferences, stating that the veteran leader would not sleep without air conditioning.

Siva recounted, “Similarly, when I was around 23 or 24, Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) would take me in his car and recount some events. Even though he (Kamaraj) was speaking against him, considering his health, I made sure all those bungalows had air conditioning.’”

Further narrating a political anecdote from the Emergency period, Siva claimed that Karunanidhi sought to protect Kamaraj from being arrested by the Central Government when he planned to travel to Tirupati. “During the Emergency, they were desperate to arrest him but couldn’t do it in Tamil Nadu.

These remarks have drawn widespread criticism, especially from Congress leaders and Kamaraj supporters who view the statements as distortions of historical fact and an attempt to elevate Karunanidhi at the expense of Kamaraj’s legacy.

Responding strongly, Congress MP from Karur, Jothimani, issued a statement on social media platform X, saying, “The great leader Kamarajar is renowned worldwide not only for his integrity and administrative prowess but also for his simplicity.
Is there any place in Tamil Nadu where Kamarajar’s footsteps have not tread? Such is the extent of his travels across every nook and corner of Tamil Nadu. In those nooks and corners, there were no air-conditioned rooms or five-star hotels. As a Chief Minister, he stayed in government guest houses, and if it was too hot, he would sleep under a tree on a cot. He was a simple man who even told his security personnel to rest and was accustomed to sleeping alone.

The claim by brother Thiru Trichy Siva that Kamarajar would not sleep without an air-conditioned room is entirely contrary to the truth.

This must be seen as a continuation of the myths propagated in the past with political malice against our leader Kamarajar.

The Congress Party paid rent for the house where Kamarajar lived. The myth propagated by the DMK that it was his personal mansion is what led to the defeat of this great personality of our land in the electoral arena, as history records.

If we fail to give a fitting reply to the myths spread against Kamarajar, his soul will not forgive us. Every Congress worker must remember that it is because of his name that the Congress Party still stands in the political arena of Tamil Nadu to this day.”

Historians and critics have also pointed out that contemporary records indicate Kamaraj’s last known words were to his aide, “Vairava, turn off that lamp”, before retiring to bed on the night of his death, casting doubt on the dramatic account relayed by Tiruchi Siva.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has captured global attention, with humanitarian concerns and political posturing taking centre stage. In India, the debate has also reached Parliament, where DMK MP Tiruchi Siva recently questioned the government’s abstention from a UN resolution aimed at protecting Palestinian civilians.

While the MP’s concerns about international humanitarian issues are valid, the glaring silence of the DMK on the atrocities faced by Hindus in neighboring Bangladesh reveals a troubling hypocrisy.

DMK’s Vocal Support for Palestine

During the winter session of Parliament, Tiruchi Siva raised the issue of India’s abstention from a UN resolution in October 2023 that called for the protection of Palestinian civilians. The resolution, tabled amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, aimed at upholding legal and humanitarian obligations in conflict zones. Siva’s pointed question about India’s stance was accompanied by criticism of the central government’s policies. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar responded, highlighting India’s significant humanitarian aid to Palestine, including thousands of tons of food and medical supplies sent in 2023.

Deafening Silence on Bangladeshi Hindus

While the DMK has been vocal on international issues, it has remained conspicuously silent on the plight of Bangladeshi Hindus. Since the political upheaval and coup in Bangladesh in August 2024, there have been several reports of targeted violence, persecution, and displacement of Hindus every single day. Temples have been desecrated, homes torched, Hindu families blackmailed, teachers forced to resign, Hindu women forced to wear burkha in public, etc. Despite the gravity of the situation, DMK leaders, who often position themselves as defenders of minority rights, have refrained from addressing these atrocities.

This silence extends to local media channels in Tamil Nadu, many of which are believed to be influenced by the DMK. Allegations of a deliberate blackout of news about Bangladeshi Hindus have raised questions about the party’s commitment to justice and human rights.

Double Standards on Human Rights

The DMK’s selective outrage exposes a troubling double standard. On one hand, it champions the cause of Palestinian civilians, aligning itself with global humanitarian concerns. On the other, it turns a blind eye to the systematic persecution of Hindus in a neighboring country. This inconsistency undermines the party’s credibility and raises suspicions about its political motivations.

The plight of Bangladeshi Hindus is not just a local or regional issue; it is a humanitarian crisis that demands international attention. By ignoring these atrocities, the DMK not only fails its constituents but also diminishes its moral authority to critique the central government’s foreign policy.
