Serial molester and a Dravidianist poet who romanticizes pedophilia was platformed at a DMK event commemorating MK Stalin’s birthday. Ironically, DMK MP Sumathy alias Thamizhachi Thangapandian who fashions herself as a champion of women empowerment was seated next to the ‘Me Too’ accused Dravidianist poet. Sumathy (Thamizhachi), the DMK MP, recently made headlines for throwing a tantrum on social media after being downgraded from Business Class to Premium Economy on a taxpayer-funded Air India flight—an incident that earned her the moniker ‘Marie Antoinette’ of Tamil Nadu.

The Maduravoyal South unit of DMK’s South Chennai district organized the ‘Kaviyarangam’ event, a poetry exchange gathering, to hail MK Stalin. Sumathy (Thamizhachi) who also considers herself to be a poet participated along with Vairamuthu who has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple women.

This is not the first time that the Sumathy (Thamizhachi) Thangapandian has shared stage with the serial molester.

Earlier in November 2023, she was singing paeans about the Dravidianist poet at an event honouring the late Karunanidhi.

In that meeting DMK MP Sumathy (Thamizhachi) said “After seeing ‘Kaviperarasu (referring to Vairamuthu) as being the highlight of this event, this is what I felt. This is black-red gathering. I am red. He is black. Both of us always are in black-red… I’m bit jealous of majestically black poet.

In February 2020, she shared stage with him at MGR – Janaki Women’s Arts and Science College for a Thirukkural event.

She also stood beside him during the launch of his book ‘Thamizhaatrupadai’ in August 2019.

Not just Sumathy (Thamizhachi) but many DMK leaders including MK Stalin himself has platformed the poet on multiple occasions.

In January 2024, Vairamuthu attended a book launch event of DMK MP TR Baalu in which Stalin, his half-sister and Thoothukudi DMK MP Kanimozhi were also present. Earlier that month, the CM unveiled ‘Maha Kavithai,’ a composition by #MeToo accused writer.

The DMK government also chose him to preside over Karunanidhi Centenary Celebrations at Tiruvarur in 2023. He was also included in the list of recipients under the ‘Dream House’ scheme of the DMK government, an initiative to honor writers from the state who have received national and international accolades for their literary contributions.

‘Me Too’ Accused Anti-Hindu Dravidianist Poet Vairamuthu

Vairamuthu is a Dravidianist poet who shares close ties with the DMK. He has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple women during the #MeToo movement. Around 17 women have levelled sexual harassment charges against the Dravidianist poet. Singer Suchitra has alleged that the Dravidianist DMK-supporting poet invited her to his home to make sexual advances.

In 2021, he had penned a song that romanticizes pedophilia. The song is about a school-going girl in love with a grey-haired old ‘poet’ and was filmed with actor Anika Surendran who was 16 years old at that time.

In 2018, Vairamuthu had called the woman Azhwar Andal by a ‘dasi’ (prostitute) who served at the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple. “Andal herself is a Devadasi who lived and died in the Sri Rangam Temple.”, Vairamuthu had said quoting a book by one Subhash Chandra Malik.

Vairamuthu had also ridiculed Ram Janmabhoomi Temple and also raised questions about his birth.

In July 2024, Vairamuthu mocked Hindu practices in a poem under the garb of condoling the Hathras stampede tragedy.

A video clip of DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian’s recent speech in the Lok Sabha has gone viral on social media, drawing significant attention for her remarks on politics and federalism.

In her speech, the South Chennai MP stated, “Instead of divisive politics, promote religious politics. The country will benefit and the people will live happily.” The remark, is seen as a Freudian slip given that the DMK indulges in promoting anti-Hindu ideology while appeasing minorities.

Thangapandian also criticized the perceived disparity in fund allocations between states, particularly highlighting the funds sent to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh under the PM Shri scheme. She pointed out that Tamil Nadu had contributed significantly to the nation’s GDP but did not receive proportionate benefits. Citing figures, she mentioned that Tamil Nadu contributes 9% to the national GDP and performs well in education and healthcare rankings. However, she argued that the state was not getting its fair share of central funds compared to other states like Maharashtra.

Further, she referenced past acts of generosity by Tamil Nadu’s leadership, recalling that during the 2008 Bihar floods, then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had sent ₹10 crore in relief aid. She noted that while Tamil Nadu had shown solidarity with other states, the central government’s budget allocations seemed uneven.

Speaking on the importance of inclusive politics, she invoked a military adage, stating, “The more you sweat for peace, the less you bleed in war.” She argued that economic progress could only come through inclusive politics and federalism, rather than through divisive approaches.

Her speech concluded with a reiteration of her opening statement: “Realize the federalism principle and move forward with religious politics instead of divisive politics. The country will benefit, the people will prosper and be happy.”

Whether the statement was an unintended slip or a deliberate articulation of her views, it has certainly become a topic of national discourse. The reaction of the VCK MP Ravi Kumar and Communist MP Su Venkatesan after Thangapandian made the statement was even more hilarious.

Ezhumbur, the historic name for Chennai’s Egmore station, was spotlighted in the Lok Sabha as Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized its redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Responding to DMK MP Tamilachi Thangapandian’s concerns, Vaishnaw hailed Ezhumbur’s transformation, stating it would soon become a prime attraction in Chennai, blending its legacy with modern upgrades.

During the ongoing Winter Session of the Lok Sabha, DMK MP Tamilachi Thangapandian raised concerns about restoring and redeveloping railway stations in Chennai under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Speaking in Parliament, Thangapandian highlighted the need for updates on redevelopment efforts, particularly in her constituency. She stated, “I would like to the minister through you sir regarding the Amrit Bharat station scheme. The ministry has announced 1324 stations which have been identified for redevelopment including 77 stations in the state of Tamil Nadu. I’d like to ask the Hon’ble Minister what has been the update with respect to these railway stations in our state, especially I have given representation to my constituency which is Saidapet station as well as the redevelopment work of Chennai Egmore.”

In response, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided an update on the station redevelopment programme, emphasizing the significant scale of the initiative. He noted, “The supplementary is actually not related to the main question. But still, I would like to point out that the Hon’ble Prime Minister has really focused on the transformation of Indian Railways, and as a part of that, one of the major programmes we have taken up is the redevelopment of 1,300 railway stations. And at this point in time, this is the world’s largest station redevelopment programme, and nowhere in the world has anybody taken up the redevelopment of such a large number of stations in a network which is continuously operating.”

Focusing on Chennai Egmore station, Vaishnaw remarked, “The Chennai Egmore, I would like to pronounce it as Chennai Ezhumbur, is one of the Amrit Bharat stations and it is developing very well. I have visited that twice and the design and the enthusiasm of the officers working on that project is really amazing. I can say that it will be one of the stations which will become a prime attraction in the city of Chennai. Regarding other stations, Hon’ble MP can always meet me and discuss the details.”

DMK MP Dr Thamizhachi Thangapandian had an article published in The New Indian Express in which she blames National Education Policy 2020 as propaganda.

She belongs to the cadre that printed the fake information in the Class 9 textbook, for which UNESCO awarded E.V.R. the Socrates of South Asia award (whatever that means!). Against which a PIL was filed in the Madras High Court. Thangapandian comes from a party where the Higher Education Minister has been convicted by court.

Now, let us go to the article itself. It starts with a quote by Martin Luther King. “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” But here is what NEP2020 says:

The education system aims to develop good human beings capable of rational thought and action, possessing compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, scientific temper, and creative imagination, with sound ethical moorings and values. It aims to produce engaged, productive, and contributing citizens who will build an equitable, inclusive, and plural society as envisaged by our Constitution.

In contrast to the identical message conveyed through the above, students from Tamil Nadu schools and colleges are not permitted to think; instead they are asked to swallow and vomit the answers to score marks. A significant percentage of graduates are without jobs that match their degree certificates not because of the dearth of jobs but because they are unfit for those jobs despite their college years. This must make the state government ashamed to even speak about education, let alone find fault in a policy that has the nation’s interest at its core.

In the agenda-driven article, Thangapandian says, “One of the aims is to include Indian knowledge systems (IKS) in undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums. These range from Indian astronomy to textiles, town planning, and Vedic mathematics … … The IKS initiative allows a backdoor entry to pseudoscience, contradicting a fundamental duty enshrined in the Constitution—the development of scientific temper.”

Thangapandian has named astronomy, textiles, town planning, and Vedic mathematics and clearly none of them is a pseudo-science. She then states, “For instance, the higher education department of Madhya Pradesh recently notified a list of books for the IKS sections of libraries in government, government-aided and private institutions that include those authored by individuals with RSS connections.”

This is clearly a statement that shows her vengefulness for RSS. This method of criticism is unscientific and uncivil. Thangapandian does not criticize the content written by the individual(s), rather she assumes that their very association with RSS makes the content of their writing unacceptable. Seems like her propaganda bosses must have asked her to write such things.

She states, “IIT Mandi’s IKS department introduced a mandatory course … … which included topics like reincarnation, for engineering students. The irony of students with scientific backgrounds being taught unscientific theories seems to have escaped the institution.”

Unsurprisingly, yet again this statement is based on vague assumptions without knowledge of either what is in the book or of the subject in general. Being of a party that has built a memorial for their dead leader whom they garland along with statues of EVR and others, what is her stance on worshipping a statue/picture and, thereafter on reincarnation? A more scientific response that has statistical data to support is that we have top-quality professionals from IIT, AIIMS, IIM, and many other premiere institutions who consciously believe in reincarnation and worshipping ancestors; are counted among the greatest scientific brains in the country and the world.

Let me now list out the pathetic state which is not doing good for anyone in the state of Tamil Nadu except to fill the coffers of the corrupt and the wicked:

As of date, there is NOT ONE university of repute which is run by the state of Tamil Nadu. Every one of them is in shambles, grossly understaffed, and ridden with corruption. ‘Ghost Faculty Scam’ in several Universities in which thousands of positions were filled by mere tens of staff names was widely reported in recent months.

To fill full-time positions, state-run colleges appoint ‘Guest Lecturers’ who are made to teach full-time but who have neither job security nor decent pay. They earn as low as ₹25,000 a month, the lowest in the country. Despite a 2013 court order, the state has not made them permanent.

Statistics show that among graduates, Tamil Nadu’s unemployment rate is 16.3%, compared to the all-India rate of 13.4%.
Tamil Nadu has the unique distinction that it cannot even educate its children in their language.

Deccan Herald reported: ‘In 2022, around 47,000 out of the 900,000 students who took the Class X Board exams failed in Tamil. In 2023, nearly 50,000 Class XII students did not even turn up for the Tamil exam.’

These politicians dare to speak about language superiority in such a situation!

Many schools run privately by those who run the state government are affiliated with CBSE and not the State Board. The article published by The Print in June 2019 states, ‘More than 40 schools run by DMK politicians, and their family members are affiliated to the CBSE, which follows the 3-language formula.’ The likelihood that the number of these schools has increased over the past 5 years is high.

Last but not least, the Director of Loyola College, Rev. Fr. C. Joe Arun is on record where he states that the Class 1 to 5 social sciences syllabus has Jesuit ideologies “injected” into them. THIS IS UNDISGUISED IDEOLOGY in school textbooks!

The state government must first care for the State Board and state-run schools and colleges. You are not in the league of education that can criticize NEP or any policy to which you have no clue.

Unlike Thamizhachi Thangapandian, none of what I have stated is an assumption or my own imagination and I have provided references to corroborate each point that I have stated. If she wishes to pursue the debate, let her do some homework on NEP, IKS, the author of the books she speaks about, etc. and then we can talk. Until then, let her speak to Ponmudi and Anbil Mahesh and get them to do their job.

The 18th Lok Sabha’s first session is scheduled to commence from 24 June 2024, and will run until 3 July 2024. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on 19 June 2024, that the Rajya Sabha session will start on 27 June 2024. He also urged all political parties to engage in constructive debates during the upcoming session.

Against this backdrop, Members of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran from Central Chennai, Thamizhachi Thangapandian from Chennai South, and Kalanidhi Veeraswamy from Chennai North visited George Antonysamy, the controversial Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore. Archbishop Antonysamy had recently been accused of attempting to influence voters using religious sentiments during the concluded Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The DMK MP’s faced criticism from the netizens.

During the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a complaint was raised by the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LPRF) on 29 April 2024, to the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the Tamilnadu Bishops’ Council and Archbishop of Mylapore – Madras Archdiocese, George Antonysamy, for allegedly propagating written propaganda through a community magazine to sway voters in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the ECI has acknowledged the complaint. Subsequently, the ECI has acknowledged the complaint and instructed the Chennai District Election Officer to address the issue of influencing voters along communal lines.

Archbishop George Antonysamy had penned an editorial titled “General Election 2024: Statement from Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council” in a recent edition of The New Leader magazine, invoking religious sentiments and employing fear-mongering tactics. In the editorial, Antonysamy openly criticized India’s elected central government (BJP) and its citizens. He had suggested that there was an attempt to construct India as a mono-cultural nation, denying its diversity. He had accused the Union Government of imposing the ideology of one religion, one language, and one culture, along with fascist ideologies.

Antonysamy had further stirred disharmony by alleging that Christians and Muslims were branded as anti-nationals and their fundamental rights were under attack. He had criticized the government for attempting to impose communal laws and curtail religious freedom. He had also expressed concerns about various issues including media control, neglect of southern states, attacks on state rights, and alleged government control over investigative bodies and courts. The editorial had concluded with a call to action urging Christians to vote to protect religious faith and human rights, rejecting sectarian parties, and aligning with non-religious, democratic forces.

The editorial’s tone and content had suggested a possible alignment with a political party, specifically the DMK, based on its language and echoed claims. Concerns had been raised about its attempt to influence voters based on religious lines, which could have violated the democratic process. Several organizations affiliated with the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore had been highlighted, indicating the need for a thorough investigation into potential violations of FEMA, PMLA, and FCRA regulations. Allegations had been made about the misuse of FCRA funds for purposes contrary to donor intentions, including political agendas.

Various organizations, including the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF), had raised the issue with the Election Commission of India, urging decisive action against the Bishop’s Council and the Archdiocese of Mylapore-Madras. There had been demands for investigation and accountability for violating laws and misusing funds.

Recently, Dayanand Krishnan, a GIS consultant from Chennai, uncovered concerning statistics through the Right to Information (RTI) Act. According to data obtained from the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, approximately 75% of the funds allocated to the 39 Members of Parliament (MPs) in Tamil Nadu via the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) between 2019 and 2024 (excluding years impacted by COVID-19) have not been utilized.

The Ministry specified that the annual entitlement for a Member of Parliament under the MPLADS Scheme is ₹5 crore. Additionally, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MPLADS was suspended from 6 April 2020 to 9 November 2021, with no funds allocated to the scheme for the financial year 2020-21. For the remaining period of FY 2021-22, ₹2 crore was allotted under the scheme for each Member of Parliament.

The release of funds is contingent upon meeting fund-related criteria and the submission of relevant documents by district authorities in accordance with the MPLADS Guidelines, 2016.

According to the response, MPs are not required to wait for actual funds to be released by the Ministry as they are allocated annual drawing limits at the start of each financial year, subject to certain conditions. In this case, the total allocation should have amounted to ₹663 crore, but as evidenced in the data, only ₹367 crore was disbursed, resulting in a 44.64% shortfall, as claimed by Krishnan.

The total expenditure exceeds ₹93 crore, indicating an unspent amount of approximately ₹274 crore, roughly equivalent to 75%, he added.

The highest allocation went to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (DMK) Chennai South MP T Sumathy, also known as Thamizhachi Thangapandian (₹14.7 crore), while the lowest allocation was for Arani MP MK Vishnu Prasad of the Indian National Congress (INC) (₹4.9 crore). Communist Party of India (Marxist) Madurai MP S Venkatesan has spent the most funds on various projects (₹6.39 crore).

According to the data, there was no expenditure listed under the Chennai Central and Vellore Parliamentary constituencies. The current Chennai Central MP is Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s Dayanidhi Maran, and in Vellore, it is DM Kathir Anand of the same party.

Chennai South DMK MP T Sumathy, also known as Thamizhachi Thangapandian, has directed the allocated funds towards three distinct categories, all channeled through the Chennai Corporation, without allocating any portion to the surrounding panchayats of Chennai. With an allotted amount of ₹14.7 crore rupees, the total expenditure stands at ₹77 lakhs, reflecting a utilization rate of merely 18%.

The breakdown of expenditure reveals that a significant portion, amounting to 76%, has been allocated towards constructing bus stops or sheds, totaling ₹5.93 crores. However, concerns are raised regarding the necessity of constructing additional shelters where existing ones already serve, prompting questions about the allocation strategy and the distribution of these facilities. Despite this considerable investment, only two observed are evident, leaving uncertainty about the completion status of the remaining shelters. Moreover, it is notable that MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian has recommended 33 projects, all concentrated within the final three months of FY24, implying a significant surge in activity after a prolonged period of inactivity. Notably, all 33 projects are routed through the Chennai Corporation, with no projects earmarked for the panchayats surrounding Chennai once again.

Image

Chennai Central’s DMK MP, Dayanidhi Maran, stands out for his exceptional approach to managing funds allocated for public welfare. Remarkably, he has diligently safeguarded every rupee entrusted to him by the government, ensuring not a single penny has been spent. Despite being allocated an amount of ₹9.8 crores, there has been no expenditure recorded, resulting in a utilization rate of 0%. In November 2023 alone, he recommended 10 projects totaling ₹9.8 crores, reflecting his commitment to serving the community without compromising financial integrity.

Image

The DMK MP A Raja, representing The Nilgiris constituency, allocated a sum of ₹9.8 crores under the MPLADS scheme. However, only ₹37 lakhs has been utilized, reflecting a mere 3% expenditure. Notably, MP A Raja recommended 17 works aimed at constructing bus stops within the constituency. Interestingly, these bus stops varied significantly in cost, ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh each. This variance prompts the question, Why is there a lack of standardization in costs, even within the same district.

Image

The data revealed that work remains incomplete in 23 districts, including all three parliamentary constituencies in Chennai, Coimbatore, Pollachi, Tiruppur, Tiruchi, Theni, Chidambaram (SC), Thoothukkudi, Vellore, and Sriperumbudur.

Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS)

The MPLAD Scheme, established in December 1993, is a Central Sector Scheme with the primary goal of empowering Members of Parliament (MPs) to propose developmental projects, focusing on building sustainable community infrastructure in their respective constituencies. These projects typically target areas such as drinking water, primary education, public health, sanitation, and road development. Additionally, since June 2016, MPLAD funds have been allowed to be utilized for initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Accessible India Campaign , water conservation through rainwater harvesting, and the Sansad Aadarsh Gram Yojana.

The implementation of MPLADS involves MPs recommending projects to the Nodal District Authority, which is responsible for executing the approved works and maintaining records of expenditure. MPs receive ₹5 crore annually in two instalments of ₹2.5 crore each, and these funds do not expire at the end of the fiscal year. Lok Sabha MPs allocate funds for projects within their constituencies, while Rajya Sabha MPs allocate funds within the state that elected them. Nominated Members of both houses have the flexibility to recommend projects anywhere in the country.

In South Chennai, a competitive race unfolds as BJP’s Tamilisai Soundararajan, AIADMK’s candidate Dr. J Jayavarthan, and the incumbent South Chennai MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian of the DMK contest against each other. The South Chennai Parliamentary Constituency comprises six constituencies: Virugambakkam, Saidapet, Thiagaraya Nagar, Mylapore, Velachery, and Sholinganallur. With the nomination process concluded, they have all embarked on roadshows across South Chennai, engaging with constituents, and garnering support for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Against this backdrop, Thamizhachi Thangapandian, vying for her second term from the DMK in the South Chennai constituency, faced a challenging situation. A commotion erupted in Mylapore as the public expressed their grievances, alleging that the MP was only visible during elections and remained oblivious to ongoing issues otherwise. The campaign vehicle of Thamizhachi Thangapandian on her 2nd day campaign was obstructed by agitated residents who bombarded her with questions. They accused her of neglecting the damaged Bharathidasan Nagar Housing Board despite assurances to rectify the situation over an extended period. Residents voiced their frustration, shouting, “Go, come next time, go away now,” while women questioned if her visits were merely to ascertain their well-being. Others angrily pointed out the significance of their votes, emphasizing the MP’s self-serving motives and questioning who suffered the consequences. The demand for the prompt repair of the damaged housing board intensified, causing a stir that prompted the MP to alter her course.

The housing units in Bharathidasan Nagar Housing Board were built over 50 years ago, and their present condition is in an extremely bad shape. The ceilings show significant wear and tear, with exposed cement and iron grills visible. The stairs are broken, and there are holes present in it. Residents recount an incident where a balcony collapsed, resulting in one resident losing three fingers. Similar concerns extend to the interiors, where ceilings occasionally collapse, posing significant risks to residents’ safety. Another female resident expressed her frustration, stating, “You’re claiming you don’t need the votes from this constituency. Do you really think you’ll win?” Thamizhachi replied affirmatively and left. Residents pointed out the lack of access to clean drinking water and the issue of contaminated water affecting them. Another resident criticized the DMK government, highlighting their failure to fulfill promises such as the construction of new housing boards after demolishing existing ones. They expressed concerns about potential displacement and the financial burden of finding alternative accommodation, particularly for low-income daily wage earners.

Previously Thangapandian said that over the past five years, she has been actively sharing her activities and contributions to the constituency through social media. Many of the issues highlighted during this period have been addressed, although some minor concerns still persist. Thangapandian assured that these remaining issues would also be addressed promptly. The statement was made in the presence of Mylapore Assembly member D. Velu, representatives from alliance parties, and members of the DMK during the vote collection event.

It can be said that Chennai serves as a bastion for the DMK, as the party consistently emerges victorious in this region. The DMK alliance secured victory in all constituencies within the Chennai city during the 2021 assembly elections. And the commotion by the residents is seen a setback.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s affinity for LTTE militant Velupillai Prabhakaran did not seem to go well with their I.N.D.I.A ally, the Congress.

G Sundarrajan of Poovulagin Nanbargal, a Dravidian Stock and self-proclaimed activist who is also known for being a DMK propagandist shared a clipping of a video interview of DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian.

Here is a transcript of the clipping of a rapid-fire question segment.

Interviewer: If you could dine with any historical figure, who would it be?

Thamizhachi: Honorable National Leader Prabhakaran

Interviewer: What would you ask the person?

Thamizhachi: I would apologize, I would ask his pardon for that Mullaivaikal tragedy.

Mullaivaikal is a village on the north-east coast of Sri Lanka which was the scene of the final battle of the civil war in 2009.

Following this, Tamil Nadu Congress leader and Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram made a post on this on his X handle. He wrote, “Eulogising Prabakaran doesn’t sit well with anyone in INCIndia. To gloss over the dastardly assassination of Rajiv Gandhi along with 17 Tamils is not acceptable. This Prabakaran Veerappan Tamil Nationalism is as fringe as Hindutva Nationalism.”

He also added that he was always against the “hero worship” of the assassins of the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He further wrote, “One can sympathise & support the Palestinian people without being an endorser of Hamas, likewise one can stand with the Tamils of Srilanka in their struggle for equality & dignity without being an apologist & fanboy of the LTTE. Why is this difficult to comprehend?”

In 2022, when the assassins were released by the Supreme Court, several Dravidian stockists welcomed their release. In a video, the president of the DMK Students Wing said,  “Even before being elected, the DMK promised to take all necessary steps to free the Rajiv Gandhi case convicts. Today is the day we fulfilled our promise. The DMK government vigorously supported and argued in favor of Perarivalan in the Supreme Court, laying the groundwork for the release of six other convicts today. The DMK government’s No-Objection-Certificate (NOC) is the only reason that has made the release of the convicts possible.”

As Perarivalan, one of the convicted terrorists was released, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin was seen hugging him and and adorning him a shawl.

It is ironic that Congress continues to be in alliance in Tamil Nadu with a party that wholeheartedly supports the assassins of their former leader.

After the ‘Hindi Theriyathu Poda’ t-shirt campaign (started by DMK MP Kanimozhi and advertised by the party’s sympathizers in the media and cinema industry) fell flat, the DMK once again pounced on the opportunity to do its language politics over another incident, this time, over an IRCTC railway ticket.

A passenger who had booked a train ticket from Madurai to Chennai through IRCTC website had reportedly received the text message containing her ticket details in Hindi.

Sharing a screenshot of this message, South Chennai DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian tweeted in Tamil saying that IRCTC was imposing Hindi although the Constitution recognizes 23 languages as official language. She claimed that the Government of India was imposing Hindi through ‘insidious means’.

Central Chennai DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran sharing the same screenshot asked also made hue and cry about Hindi imposition.

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Dr. Ramadoss too jumped the bandwagon and claimed that the IRCTC had been sending the ticket messages in Hindi for the past two days. He said that sending ticket text messages in Hindi was a ‘planned Hindi imposition’.

Following this, The News Minute which had earlier given enough publicity to Kanimozhi’s ‘Hindi Theriyathu Poda’ campaign, carried a story about this incident with the title “IRCTC sends TN woman ticket confirmation text in Hindi, sparks language imposition row”.

However, their efforts to rake up language sentiments failed as the IRCTC and Southern Railways busted the claims of ‘Hindi imposition’.

The IRCTC replying to Thamizhachi Thangapandian’s tweet said that at the time of registration, the user had the option to select their language preference – either English or Hindi and that in the said case the user had chosen Hindi as the preferred language.

Replying to Dayanidhi Maran’s tweet IRCTC clarified that the User ID ‘selvimano05’ through which the ticket was booked had set the preferred language as Hindi, which was the reason for the ticket getting generated in Hindi.

The Southern Railways too through its official handle clarified that choosing a language is an option in e-ticketing and that in the said case the user had indicated the preferred language as Hindi. In its statement, the Southern Railways requested the passengers to choose the correct language while registering in the IRCTC website.

A user while registering himself/herself in the IRCTC website is asked to set the preferred language.

Even after the clarification from IRCTC and Southern Railways, neither the DMK leaders who cried foul acknowledged the response given nor did The News Minute which had carried the story claiming of ‘sparking Hindi imposition row’ clarified the matter to the public.
