Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gesture of gifting a Russian-language Bhagavad Gita to President Vladimir Putin, calling it an appropriate cultural exchange rooted in India’s civilisational heritage. Tharoor also backed Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s remarks on introducing India’s epics into school education, saying that studying the Mahabharata, Ramayana and the Gita enriches a child’s understanding of Indian civilisation.

“Speaking in Bengaluru, Tharoor framed the issue as one of cultural and educational enrichment, not religious imposition. He recounted his own literary engagement with the epics, stating, “When I published The Great Indian Novel in 1989, which was a satirical retelling of the Mahabharata, I already made the point that because we’re studying in English medium doesn’t mean we should not know our epics.”

Addressing the specific controversies, he clarified, “I think there’s no problem in reading, in our school days the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and so on, and the Gita is very much a part of our ancient civilisation and history.”

On the PM’s gift to Putin, Tharoor said, “To give it in Russian means conveying to another culture some of the essential lessons that we have learned… It’s not an attempt to convert Mr Putin to Hinduism. It’s a way of just showing him something that he can understand in his language. It’s a fine gesture because it reflects what we are.”

However, while Tharoor openly defended the value of the Gita and India’s epics, one of DMK’s most-amplified commentators provoked widespread anger on social media.

R.S. Nilakantan, better known by his online alias Puram, responded to the same development by posting: “The Mahabharata is a shitty epic. The Russians are probably laughing at its lack of sophistication.”

His remark has reignited debate about the ideological ecosystem surrounding the DMK, where several figures have routinely mocked Hindu scriptures and symbols despite holding influence in political discourse and state-aligned media spaces.

Who Is Nilakantan RS (‘Puram’)?

Nilakantan RS is a polarizing figure whose rhetoric frequently targets Indian national symbols, communities, and leadership. His commentary includes:

Caste Hatred: In 2015, he called for violence against upper castes, tweeting, “If everyone picked up a gun and shot the nearest upper caste person, they’d be doing society a favor.”

Anti-National Sentiments: He has advocated for India’s military defeat by China to cure “ugly jingoism” and made derogatory remarks about the Indian Army.

Extreme Rhetoric: His posts have included calls for the assassination of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the bombing of North Indians.

Misogyny: In a previous online avatar as ‘Nilu’, he was associated with deeply misogynistic and perverse blog posts.

Despite this record, Nilakantan has been courted by sections of the political and media establishment. He has written for outlets like The Wire and The Caravan, been hosted on podcasts by The News Minute’s Dhanya Rajendran, and was publicly endorsed by DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan, who promoted his book South Vs North: India’s Great Divide.

In a fresh episode of internal discord, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has ignited a political firestorm by publicly praising Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart L.K. Advani on his 98th birthday, prompting the Congress high command to swiftly distance itself from his remarks.

The controversy, erupting just days after Tharoor’s pointed critique of dynastic politics, underscores deepening rifts within the grand old party as it grapples with unity ahead of upcoming state elections.

Tharoor, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday to extend warm wishes to Advani, the architect of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and former Deputy Prime Minister.

“Wishing the venerable Shri L.K. Advani a very happy 98th birthday! His unwavering commitment to public service, his modesty & decency, and his role in shaping the trajectory of modern India are indelible. A true statesman whose life of service has been exemplary,” Tharoor posted, accompanied by a photo of the BJP icon.

The tribute quickly drew sharp backlash from within Congress ranks and beyond. Islamo-leftist pro-Congress propagandist  Arfa Khanum Sherwani, accused Tharoor of glossing over Advani’s controversial legacy, particularly his role in the 1990 Ram Rath Yatra, which triggered widespread communal riots following the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition.

“Sir, while you speak of statesmanship, for many of us his ‘trajectory of modern India’ meant terror and displacement. I was 12 when I fled my home during the riots… Millions of Muslims still live with that pain,” Sherwani wrote.

On Sunday, Tharoor fired back in a follow-up post, defending his stance with characteristic eloquence. Replying to a critic who urged a fuller reckoning of Advani’s career, he argued: “Agreed… but reducing his long years of service to one episode, however significant, is also unfair. The totality of Nehruji’s career cannot be judged by the China setback, nor Indira Gandhi’s by the Emergency alone. I believe we should extend the same courtesy to Advaniji.”

The response, drawing parallels between Advani and Congress icons Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, only amplified the uproar, with detractors labeling it as an attempt to “whitewash” Advani’s communal footprint.

Congress leadership moved rapidly to contain the damage. Party spokesperson Pawan Khera issued a statement on X: “Like always, Dr. Shashi Tharoor speaks for himself and the Indian National Congress outrightly dissociates itself from his most recent statement. That he continues to do so as a Congress MP and CWC member reflects the essential democratic and liberal spirit unique to INC.” The remarks highlighted the party’s internal tolerance for dissent – a double-edged sword that allows Tharoor’s voice but risks alienating its core base.

The episode is the latest in a string of flashpoints involving Tharoor, whose independent streak has long chafed against party orthodoxy. Just last week, on November 3, Tharoor penned an op-ed for an international publication decrying dynastic politics as a “grave threat to Indian democracy.”

He lambasted the Nehru-Gandhi family for “cementing the idea that political leadership can be a birthright,” while extending his critique to regional outfits like the Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena, and DMK. “This idea has penetrated Indian politics across every party, in every region, and at every level,” he wrote, calling for a shift from “dynasty to meritocracy.”

That piece, too, provoked internal pushback. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari countered by invoking the sacrifices of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, who “gave their lives for the nation,” while spokesperson Rashid Alvi dismissed it as a non-issue, noting dynastic tendencies exist “across all walks of Indian life.”

BJP leaders, sensing an opening, pounced with glee. Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla dubbed Tharoor a “Khatron Ke Khiladi” for daring to challenge the Gandhis, tweeting: “Very insightful piece… he has launched a direct attack on India’s Nepo kid Rahul & chhota nepo kid Tejashwi Yadav!” Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan added that the remarks would “hurt Congress and RJD because their politics are limited to family.

“Tharoor’s history of perceived deviations has fueled speculation about his future in Congress. Earlier this year, he faced ire for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy and Operation Sindoor – a cross-border strike against Pakistan – drawing accusations of undermining party lines on national security. In Kerala, his absence from key campaigns and compliments for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government strained ties with state unit chief K. Muraleedharan, who once declared Tharoor unwelcome at events unless he aligned more closely with the party’s stance.

Yet, Tharoor has brushed off the tensions, insisting his comments stem from a “pro-India” ethos rather than disloyalty. In February, amid rumors of a rift, he quipped to reporters: “You all heard the podcast, what was the controversy about? It is a podcast… nothing there much about any political controversy.”

Party general secretary Randeep Surjewala has repeatedly affirmed Tharoor’s place in the “Congress family,” even as internal whispers of a potential exit – perhaps to the BJP – persist.

As Congress eyes local body polls in Kerala next month and assembly elections in 2026, Tharoor’s episodes risk amplifying perceptions of disarray. BJP’s Poonawalla escalated the barbs on Sunday, branding Congress the “Indira Nazi Congress” for its “dictatorial behaviour” in rebuking a mere birthday wish to a Bharat Ratna recipient. Supporters like BJP MP Pradeep Bhandari echoed the sentiment, questioning the party’s “compassion” in light of past Congress leaders’ engagements with controversial figures.

On 23 September 2025, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor questioned the lack of response from the Indian-American community regarding key issues straining India-US relations, including former President Donald Trump’s imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian goods and the recent decision to increase the H-1B visa application fee to $100,000.

Tharoor’s remarks followed a high-level meeting between a U.S. Congressional delegation and India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, which he chaired. The American delegation, made up of five Democratic lawmakers four from California expressed strong support for bilateral ties despite ongoing policy disagreements.

Among the topics discussed were the steep hike in H-1B visa fees, the U.S. tariffs on Indian exports, and sanctions impacting India’s involvement with Iran’s Chabahar Port. Several U.S. representatives voiced concerns about the Trump administration’s decisions on these fronts.

Tharoor highlighted a surprising revelation during the meeting: despite the impact of these measures, Indian-Americans have largely remained silent. He noted that one of the visiting congresswomen had not received a single call from any Indian-American constituents urging a change in U.S. policy.

“One of the key points raised was the noticeable silence of the Indian-American community,” Tharoor told ANI. “One congresswoman said not a single Indian-American voter had contacted her office about these issues. That’s something we all need to think about. If members of the diaspora care about their relationship with India, they must be more vocal and proactive in engaging with their political representatives in the U.S.”

He also praised the visiting delegation, describing them as long-time friends of India who spoke warmly about strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Tharoor further acknowledged India’s economic resilience and the global contributions of its diaspora, emphasizing that U.S. lawmakers continue to value and prioritize the India-U.S. strategic partnership. “The most important takeaway from this visit is the clear message that American public opinion, particularly in Congress, remains deeply committed to a strong relationship with India,” he said.

Despite challenges including the increased H-1B visa fee, trade tariffs, and port-related sanctions Tharoor said the broader commitment to collaboration remains intact.

In an earlier interview, Tharoor described the new H-1B fee policy as “the third blow” to Indian interests under Trump’s administration, but noted it could have long-term benefits for India. While acknowledging short-term difficulties for individuals and businesses, he argued the move might eventually bolster India’s strategic position. “We shouldn’t always see ourselves as victims in these developments,” he remarked.

Just last week, former President Trump signed an executive order raising the H-1B visa application fee to $100,000, significantly tightening the program. The administration justified the move by claiming it would prioritize high-skilled foreign workers for jobs that cannot be filled by Americans.

Additionally, the Trump administration proposed a reform to the H-1B selection process, moving away from the random lottery system toward a merit-based approach that favors applicants with higher qualifications and better pay.

CCTV footage has surfaced showing Youth Congress Chovannur Mandalam president Sujith V S being brutally assaulted inside the Kunnamkulam police station on 6 April 2023. The visuals were obtained following a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Sujith.

According to the case registered in the Kunnamkulam First Class Judicial Magistrate Court, Sujith suffered hearing loss following alleged custodial violence by Sub-Inspector Nuhman and CPOs Sashindran, Sandeep, and Sajeevan.

The incident reportedly began when Sujith questioned police officers who were allegedly threatening his friends standing by the roadside at Chovannur. Enraged, SI Nuhman allegedly brought Sujith to the station in a police jeep, where he was assaulted in custody. Sujith stated, “Just before reaching the station, the police jeep was stopped on the road. Sajeevan, one of the officers, opened the back door and assaulted me. Once inside the station, the officers together subjected me to brutal thrashing.”

Police later filed a FIR against Sujith, accusing him of public nuisance and obstructing duty under the influence of alcohol. However, a medical report confirmed he had not consumed alcohol, and the Chavakkad Magistrate Court granted him bail.

Following the assault, Sujith filed complaints with senior police officials and the Human Rights Commission. A departmental inquiry retrieved CCTV evidence showing five policemen beating him inside the station. Judicial Magistrate L Jayanth subsequently ordered a case to be registered against the accused officers. Advocate CB Rajeev, also Kunnamkulam Block Congress president, represented Sujith in court.

The Crime Records Bureau (CRB) inquiry, led by Assistant Commissioner Sethu K C, confirmed the assault. The footage reportedly shows officers continuing the assault upstairs in the CCTN room in the presence of Sub-Inspector Nuhman. Officers were also seen removing Sujith’s ring, bracelet, and chain, and one officer carried a stick while escorting him out of the room.

Sujith further alleged that police tried to offer ₹20 lakh through Congress leader Varghese Chovannur to withdraw the case, an offer he refused.

Reacting to the incident, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor condemned the custodial violence, wroteThe custodial violence against Youth Congress leader Sujith by Kunnamkulam Police is deeply disturbing. Assaulting a citizen for questioning police threats is not just unlawful — it is inhuman. Such officers, who violate the very principles of justice and dignity, have no place in the police force. They have forfeited the moral right to continue in service. The CM and Home Department must act. Silence cannot be the shield for such brutality. @CMOKerala @IYCKerala

Disciplinary action is being considered against the police officers involved, and further proceedings are expected to be conducted under the direct supervision of the court.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, heading a parliamentary team as part of the Operation Sindoor diplomatic outreach, commended India’s recent strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), describing the action as both forceful and strategic.

Speaking at an event at the Indian Consulate in New York, Tharoor remarked, “As someone from the opposition, not the government, I had previously argued for a strong yet measured response. I’m glad to see India took exactly that approach.”

He noted that the strikes on May 7 were “carefully targeted and precise,” hitting nine identified terrorist sites, including operational bases and launchpads in Pakistan and PoK.

Tharoor emphasized the need for a “new threshold” in India’s approach to Pakistan, highlighting past diplomatic efforts that had yielded little due to Pakistan’s continued denial and inaction. “There have been no real convictions or dismantling of terror infrastructure,” he said. “When there are persistent safe havens, retaliation becomes inevitable.”

He asserted that India’s recent action demonstrated its capability to respond with accuracy, while underlining that India has no interest in conflict. “We do not want war. Our focus is on economic growth and preparing our people for the 21st century,” he added.

Tharoor criticized Pakistan for not respecting the status quo and seeking Indian territory through non-conventional methods. “Terrorism cannot be an acceptable tool to achieve political aims,” he stated.

The parliamentary delegation led by Tharoor is scheduled to visit five countries — the United States, Panama, Guyana, Brazil, and Colombia — and includes MPs from various parties, including the BJP, LJP (Ram Vilas), TDP, Shiv Sena, and JMM, along with former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s recent remarks acknowledging Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic stance on the Russia-Ukraine war have drawn both praise and criticism, from different sides of the political spectrum. While BJP leaders welcomed his endorsement of Modi government’s stance on Ukraine-Russia face-off, Congress leaders questioned Tharoor on his own admission of flip-flop. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, Tharoor admitted that he had misjudged India’s position on the conflict.

“I am still wiping the egg off my face because I was one of those who criticised India’s position back in February 2022. Three years later, it turns out I was wrong. India now has a Prime Minister who can hug both the President of Ukraine and the President of Russia within two weeks and still be accepted in both places. That means India is in a position to make a difference to lasting peace,” he said. BJP MP Sambit Patra welcomed Tharoor’s comments and highlighted India’s diplomatic advancements under Modi government.

“India’s diplomacy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unparalleled. He has positioned India uniquely on the global stage. Tharoor, having worked at the UN, understands this and has acknowledged it. Congress leaders should learn from this instead of constantly opposing PM Modi,” Patra said. Congress leader Udit Raj, however, dismissed Tharoor’s remarks and questioned India’s influence in global affairs. “Does Tharoor think he knows better than 140 crore Indians? Does he have nothing else to do? What significant role has India played in global affairs? Who even acknowledges India? Trump taught a lesson to PM Modi, but no one had the courage or stature to say anything. It is NATO or the US that decides. Moreover, earlier, he criticised PM Modi; did it make any difference? Did his criticism have any real impact?” Raj told IANS.

“Another point is that PM Modi maintains an equal distance from both sides, which essentially follows the non-alignment policy initiated by Pandit Nehru. So, if anyone should be endorsed, it should be Pandit Nehru, not PM Modi. Tharoor does not acknowledge the fact that it was a Congress leader who initiated this policy, and ultimately, PM Modi had to accept it. I do not know what is wrong with him,” he added. Madhya Pradesh Minister Vishvas Sarang also welcomed Tharoor’s statement and said that PM Modi has been recognised as a global leader. “Whenever ceasefire or peace talks are discussed, the world looks toward PM Modi. He is not just India’s leader but a leader on the global stage,” Sarang told IANS.

JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar took a swipe at the Congress and told IANS, “The real question is whether there is any discipline left in their party. Rahul Gandhi has criticised India abroad, and now his own MPs are contradicting him. Only he can say whether he is embarrassed or proud.” Speaking to IANS, BJP MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah emphasised global appreciation for the Prime Minister. “Not just Tharoor, but world leaders like Putin, Biden, Trump, and even New Zealand’s Prime Minister have praised PM Modi. Several nations have honoured him with their highest awards, which no Indian PM has received before,” he stated. “Everyone praises PM Modi — some openly, some in private. But the fact remains, he is widely respected,” BJP MLA Karnail Singh said.

Padmaja Venugopal, the daughter of legendary four-time Congress Chief Minister K. Karunakaran on Thursday said Shashi Tharoor is welcome to join the BJP.

“There is no need to call him, as he knows how he is being treated in the Congress party. He is welcome to join the BJP. I used to see him during party meetings when in the Congress and I used to ask him, why is he not present for many meetings. He used to say he does not get the invite and hence doesn’t know of the meetings,” said Padmaja.

“I have always felt and seen how Tharoor was sidelined by the party. All what I said when I left Congress has just been repeated by Tharoor in the past few days. There is no future for him in the Congress party. I decided to leave the Congress party not for any posts or positions, but for peace of mind, which I now have. Nothing is going to happen in the state Congress leaders meeting in Delhi (Tharoor also is invited) called by the high command,” added Padmaja.

Of late Tharoor has come under fire from top state party leaders after his article in an English daily that praised PM Modi and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. However, Shashi Tharoor has already made his position clear that he will not join the BJP.

He was summoned by Rahul Gandhi last week and the two had a closed-door meeting. Speculations on Thursday have surfaced that Tharoor might be given the post of the Deputy Leader of the Lok Sabha.

Padmaja left the Congress party after former Defence Minister A.K. Antony’s son Anil Antony joined the Congress party. While Anil was given the Pathanamthitta Lok Sabha seat to contest, Padmaja failed to get one.

In a recent podcast interview with Raj Shamani, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi revealed a lot of things, ranging from the reasons behind his departure from India in 2010 to death threats by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, multiple documented assassination attempts orchestrated by Ibrahim, the IPL history, and what was the most explosive revelation: the involvement of Congress member Shashi Tharoor during the IPL team purchase bids.

During the conversation, Modi also accused Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and the party’s leadership of coercion and corruption during the league’s early years. Modi alleged that he wasforcibly made to sign documentsgranting Sunanda Pushkar, Tharoor’s late wife, a 25% ownership stake worth millions in the Kochi IPL team without any financial contribution on her part. He further claimed that the Congress-led UPA government, including10 Janpath(a reference to the Gandhi family), fostered an environment of unchecked corruption during its tenure.

He also criticized the handling of IPL affairs under the Congress government, alleging that mismanagement and corruption led to Kerala losing its IPL team. Modi’s allegations revive the controversies surrounding the Kochi IPL franchise, which was mired in financial and political disputes during its brief existence.

Here are two videos that are being shared on social media relating to Shashi Tharoor.

Lalit Modi says,The second highest bid was $348 million by Kochi Tuskers. I looked at the 12 shareholders, it was supposed to be JP Group. All of a sudden, something totally different, I am tick marking everybody and there’s one name I see out there, a lady by the name of Sunanda Pushkar. Sunanda Pushkar in the agreement had $0 in the $50 million consortium but owns 25% of the team for free! Plus for every dollar coming in, revenue line, she gets 15% of it. I said I am not going to sign this agreement. Immediately I get a call from Shashi Tharoor. He said,Don’t you dare ask about Sunanda Pushkar, if you I’ll have you raided by ED tomorrow, you’ll be taken by Income Tax and we will jail you.”

In another video, he explains how Tharoor allegedly coerced Modi into signing an agreement that granted a significant financial stake to Sunanda Pushkar, Tharoor’s late wife, under questionable circumstances. Modi detailed the events alleging undue pressure from Tharoor, BCCI officials, and political figures linked to the Congress party.

According to Modi, during discussions about the Kochi IPL franchise, he questioned the credentials of the consortium’s shareholders. He discovered that Sunanda Pushkar, listed as amarketing genius, held a 25% stake in the team valued at $300 million, despite contributing no capital to the $50 million consortium. Pushkar was also entitled to 15% of the franchise’s revenue, not profits.

When Modi sought clarification about Pushkar’s involvement, he claims Tharoor responded aggressively, allegedly threatening him with investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and income tax authorities.Don’t you dare ask about Sunanda Pushkar,Tharoor allegedly told him, warning of dire consequences if Modi did not comply.

The situation escalated when then-BCCI president Shashank Manohar reportedly intervened, pressuring Modi to sign the agreement immediately. Despite his objections, Modi said he was forced to sign the agreement under duress, recording this in the meeting’s minutes.

He says, Then I am being pressured, I must sign this deal why Mr. Shashi Tharoor is pressuring. I told him I haven’t signed the deal but let me meet all the shareholders. And I ask all the shareholders you guys, one by one I would like to ask each one of you a question and everything is recorded by the way, all my meetings are always recorded, tell me what your background is, I don’t know you, I don’t know you, I don’t know you, I don’t know you, I don’t know you, I don’t know you, I don’t know you and I’m in the Cricket World, I would know everybody in the Cricket World or the business world, that is to know but it doesn’t matter it’s not my knowing, you may be who you are and everybody gives their credentials out there. And then I’m tick marking everybody and there’s one name I see out there who’s missing and it is a lady by the name of Sunanda Pushkar. Now Sunanda Pushkar in the agreement has $0 in the $50 million Consortium but owns 25% of the team for free, plus for every dollar coming in the revenue line, not profit line, revenue line, she gets 15% of it. As marketing genius written there. There, so one guy Mr Gaekwad speaks up in a low tone, he says, my father knows this lady and he brought her into the Consortium, so can I speak to your father, called the father. I said who is Sunanda Pushkar. I asked him, you have brought in Sunanda Pushkar, you are giving her 25% share, and 15% on top of it, you shareholders who own 75% are funding her and your total consortium cost is $50 million. This means that you are funding entirely, you are giving her as well, this means that a share if it costs 10 rupees, today its value is 10 paisa but her share is worth 10000 rupees. Why are you giving her this bonanza? And you call her a marketing genius, can I please meet her at least? He said yes sir I will call you back, put the phone down. Immediately I get a call from Shashi Tharoor. He says how dare you ask about Sunanda Pushkar. Shashi, what is the problem you put a consortium, you know I’m having a meeting, why isn’t she here? Don’t you dare ask about Sunanda Pushkar, if you do, I will have you raided by ED tomorrow, you’ll be taken by income tax and we will jail you. Excuse me, who the hell do you think you are and I use the f word I said **** you and I banged the phone down and I said I’m not going to sign this agreement. There is something not right with this. Within a minute after that, it’s all minuted by the way, this is exactly minute in the board minutes, because there’s a meeting going on, minutes of the AGM. I get a call from Shashank Manohar who never calls at this time in the morning or ever. He was the president of BCCI, my only boss that I reported to, even as commissioner and chairman of IPL, I reported to him and he said to me, Lalit you will sign this agreement, I said Shashank you really don’t want me to sign this agreement, let’s sit down tomorrow I can fly into Nagpur and we’ll meet tomorrow morning, I’m going to Bombay instead of going to Bombay, I’ll fly to Nagpur and we can sit down on it and then decide yes or no. He said no you will sign it tonight. I said what’s the hurry about signing it tonight he said no you need to sign it tonight, I have received many calls from 10 Janpath and you need to sign it tonight. Exact words. I said I don’t care who 10 Janpath is or who anybody is, I’m not going to sign this agreement tonight. If you don’t, I will fire you on the spot. I said that’s fine, he didn’t say I will fire you, he said I will you run against me or something. I said that if you’re forcing me to sign it, then I will I will sign it under force and I will minute it on the agreement itself, that under duress and under force and as directed by the president of BCCI, I’m signing this agreement and not on my own accord and I signed the agreement. I’m done, water under the bridge as far as I’m concerned, and we go to bed. I get up in the morning, and every newspaper front page Sunanda Pushkar getting married to Shashi Tharoor. I had no idea, zero idea that was the case. Now all the pieces start to fall in place and I said this is not going to happen under my watch, it ain’t going to happen and I’m on the flame, I just tweeted taking off, who is the hell is this Sunanda Pushkar, rags to riches, billionairess, media expert, now the owner of Kochi Team, 25%, a bonanza – day one with one signature it’s worth hundreds of millions of dollars because the team went for hundreds of millions of dollars. She owns a free $300 million asset, right there.”

Neizens have been mocking and criticizing Shashi Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, for his remarks on ‘divinity’ against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was unaware that his comments would provoke a strong reaction from the internet community, labeling him a master of hypocrisy, well-suited to comment in his own interest.

Tharoor’s comment comes in response to Prime Minister Modi’s recent statement during a television interview, where he expressed a belief in his divine purpose, stating, “Till my mother was alive, I had the impression that perhaps my birth was a biological one. After her demise when I view after assimilating all the experiences, I am convinced that God has sent me.”

In reaction to this, Shashi Tharoor took to his official handle to pose what he called an ‘innocent question’ queried, ” can a divine being be eligible for citizenship in India, and if not, does He have the right to vote or to contest elections? Could @ECISVEEP look into the question of a self-proclaimed divinity participating in the electoral fray?”

In Shashi Tharoor’s 2003 biography of Nehru, “Nehru: The Invention of India,” the first chapter, “With little to command me,” recounts the divine blessings received by Motilal Nehru.

The chapter narrates that in January 1889, Motilal Nehru, a 27-year-old lawyer from Allahabad, visited the sacred Hindu town of Rishikesh, burdened by personal loss. After losing his first wife and son during childbirth, he remarried Swarup Rani Kaul, who bore him another son who also died in infancy. Following the death of his brother Nandlal Nehru, Motilal took responsibility for his widow and seven children. Despite these burdens, he yearned for a son of his own.

Motilal and two young Brahmin companions visited a renowned yogi known for his austere practices. The yogi, informed of Motilal’s desire for a son, declared it was not in his destiny. However, Pandit Din Dayal Shastri, one of the companions, respectfully disagreed, stating that the ancient Hindu shastras did not consider such a fate irreversible and that a great karmayogi like the yogi could grant a boon. The yogi, thus challenged, sprinkled water thrice from his brass pitcher onto Motilal, stating that he had sacrificed the benefits of his austerities over many generations.

The yogi passed away the next day, and ten months later, at 11:30 p.m. on November 14, 1889, Swarup Rani gave birth to a healthy baby boy. They named him Jawaharlal “precious jewel”, who would grow up to be one of the most remarkable men of the 20th century.

Tharoor’s description of divine intervention in his book is now being used by netizens to highlight his hypocrisy, given his recent comments on divinity. His strategies and decisions are ridiculed that they align with the interests of his own, suggesting sub serving his masters.

Once again, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor finds himself in a controversy as his article published in a Bangladeshi newspaper refers the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as “India Administered Kashmir,” a term often used by Western media and organizations to dispute India’s claims over Kashmir.

Shashi Tharoor recently penned an op-ed titled “Potential Loss for Modi” in Project Syndicate, which Bangladeshi news outlet The Daily Star later leveraged to bolster their agenda of advocating for Kashmir. The piece challenges the initial assumption of a comfortable victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shashi Tharoor opined that indicators suggest diminishing support for the BJP, with voters feeling disenchanted due to unmet promises, especially concerning job creation and economic well-being.

The Congress leader claimed that despite Modi’s personal popularity, the BJP’s campaign faces apathy and critique, fueled by inflammatory rhetoric against Muslims and opposition parties. The BJP employs various tactics, including absorbing opposition figures, forging alliances, and resorting to intimidation when persuasion fails. However, signs of a resurgence in the opposition and voter fatigue with the BJP’s governance hint at a possible shift in electoral outcomes, particularly in states where the BJP’s dominance is being challenged. Absent recent galvanizing events like the 2019 terrorist attack in Kashmir, the BJP’s electoral prospects appear uncertain, with public dissatisfaction over its performance and a growing confidence among opposition ranks.

Even-though the criticism directed towards Modi and the BJP has been poorly articulated like sentiment sway of votes in 2019 due to Pulwama attack, when referring to Indian states as “administered,” suggesting that Jammu and Kashmir was not originally an integral part of India but acquired later. This stance by a senior Congress MP has sparked widespread criticism on social media.

Shashi Tharoor had written “After all, in 2019, the BJP got a major boost from a terrorist attack on a military convoy in Indian-administered Kashmir, which was carried out just a couple of months before the vote by the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammed. With no such event galvanising Indian voters today, the BJP cannot hope to replicate its performance from the last election.

Politically Motivated Appeasement

Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor previously echoed a different sentiment where he shared a post on his social media account. The post featured correspondence from British MPs affirming that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, both historically and in perpetuity. The correspondence  forwarded to his counterpart, emphasizing the importance of correcting the notion that J&K is merely administered by India rather than being an integral part of the nation. In that post, Shashi Tharoor was remarked positively on a British MP acknowledging the straightforward reality that Jammu and Kashmir is a state that fully acceded to India in 1947, not merely an “India-administered” territory.

In another post from 2019, Shashi Tharoor asserts that Jammu and Kashmir has been an inseparable part of India since 1947.

After much uproar, Shashi Tharoor in an X post claimed that he “never used such a term in any of his writings or statements anywhere, ever”.

” It has been interpolated by the editors of the newspaper that my syndicated column appeared in. I disavow such language unequivocally, but have no control over what foreign newspaper editors do.”, Shashi Tharoor said.
