Madurai CPIM MP Su Venkatesan has come under fire for his recent comments in the Lok Sabha regarding the Sengol (scepter), traditionally associated with the rulers of Tamil Nadu. His remarks have sparked controversy and drawn sharp criticism from several prominent religious and spiritual leaders, including the Madurai Adheenam, Perur Adheenam, Siravai Adheenam, and Palani Adheenam.

During the motion of thanks to the President in the 18th Lok Sabha, Su Venkatesan critiqued the ‘Sengol,’ a royal scepter symbolizing righteousness, justice, and authority in Indian culture. He ridiculed its narrative by comparing it unfavorably with historical kings known for polygamy and opulent lifestyles in their women’s quarters. Even though such associations had no relevance to the Sengol. He questioned the symbolism of bringing the Sengol into parliamentary proceedings, asking rhetorically about the historical oppression of women by kings who wielded it.

Venkatesan queried, “Do you know how many hundreds of women were kept as slaves by each king who held this Sengol? What are you trying to say to the women of the country by bringing and keeping the Sengol here? It is painful.”

These comments were perceived as an insult to Tamil Nadu’s proud tradition of kings and their association with the Sengol, particularly the scepter of Goddess Meenakshi.

Earlier, Kaumara Madalayam head Kumaragurupara Swamigal condemned the statement. He said, “Su Venkatesan was elected by the people to represent Madurai in the Lok Sabha. In Madurai, when justice was denied, the Sengol bent and the King gave up his life is something everyone knows. In Silappadikaram, the injustice and embarrassment meted out to Kannagi and how the Sengol bent is written in the epic. In this scenario, when all the newly elected MPs are beginning a new session of Parliament, a UP MP first starts speaking about the Sengol, that it has to be removed from Parliament. It is observed that the rituals and practices of our religion are being derogated by several. It is disappointing. The one from this soil (Madurai) also speaking like this is also regrettable. History tells us that it is the same soil he (Su Venkatesan) is from where when justice was denied, the Sengol bent. Whoever speaks wherever, it is an insult to Tamils.”

Kumaragurupara Swamigal also referenced the Thirukkural to emphasize the importance of integrity and justice in rulership. “Our people should teach a good lesson to those who talk like this in the future,” he asserted.

Following this, other Adheenams also registered their condemnation of the MP’s comments.

The Madurai Adheenam expressed deep disappointment, stating that Venkatesan’s remarks misrepresented the legacy of all Tamil kings, including respected figures like Pari, Maruthu Pandiyar, Veera Pandiya Kattabomman, Adiyaman, and Thirumalai Nayakar. “It is not proper for an MP elected by the people to talk like this,” the Adheenam said, questioning the influences behind Venkatesan’s statements.

Shanthalinga Marudachala from the Perur Adheenam criticized the MP for his apparent ignorance of historical context. He recounted how, under Prime Minister Nehru, the Sengol was placed in a museum but later honored by Prime Minister Modi, who involved tribal leaders in a ceremony. “Although Nehru was an atheist, history tells us that he bought the scepter and held it with pride,” he added. “By taking Thirukkural, it has the power of rulership. It is pure governance to say Tamil Nadu is proud to have that scepter in Parliament.”

Sadhu Shanmukha Adigal from the Palani Adheenam echoed these sentiments, citing Thiruvalluvar’s teachings on the importance of speaking useful and respectful words. “It is regrettable that an MP who is elected by the people without understanding its benefits speaks wrongly,” he said.

The united condemnation from these religious and spiritual leaders reflects the deep cultural and historical significance of the Sengol in Tamil Nadu. They call for MP Venkatesan to speak more carefully and with greater respect for Tamil heritage in the future.

Tamil Nadu BJP State President K. Annamalai has issued a strong rebuttal to recent comments made by Madurai MP Su Venkatesan regarding the Sengol, a scepter symbolizing Hindu Tamil culture, which was placed in the new parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a symbol of righteousness and justice.

Su Venkatesan, who is also the State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), had sparked controversy by mocking the Sengol during his speech in the 18th Lok Sabha’s motion of thanks to the President. The MP from Madurai, a seat renowned for its historical and cultural significance, including being the abode of Goddess Meenakshi, questioned the relevance of the Sengol in modern parliamentary proceedings.

During his speech, Venkatesan ridiculed the symbolic narrative of the Sengol by comparing it unfavorably with historical kings known for their polygamous practices and opulent lifestyles. He questioned the symbolism of bringing the Sengol into the parliament, suggesting it was inappropriate due to historical associations of oppression.

Do you know how many hundreds of women were kept as slaves by each king who held this Sengol? What are you trying to say to the women of the country by bringing and keeping the Sengol here? It is painful,” Venkatesan queried, adding that the gesture undermines the progress of women’s rights.

In a press conference held recently, Annamalai responded to Venkatesan’s remarks by showcasing a photograph of Venkatesan and Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan (PTR) handing over the Sengol to a woman mayor. Pointing to the photograph, Annamalai remarked, “In this picture, Su Venkatesan has handed over the Sengol to a woman mayor. Does this signify that he is enslaving this woman mayor? Tamil Nadu politicians are trying to find new logic and speak on it.

Annamalai highlighted what he termed as political hypocrisy, noting that Venkatesan attended the event and handed the Sengol to a DMK mayor, yet criticized its placement in the parliament by PM Modi. “BJP is trying to call out such political hypocrisy,” Annamalai stated.

He further elaborated on the cultural and historical significance of the Sengol, referencing Thiruvalluvar, the revered Tamil poet and philosopher, who dedicated an entire chapter to the concept of Sengol in his seminal work, the Tirukkural. Annamalai reminded that the land has built statues for Thiruvalluvar, with initiatives led by leaders like Karunanidhi and first proposed by Eknath Ranade.

Does Su Venkatesan’s stand signify that Thiruvalluvar is wrong?” Annamalai questioned. He expressed admiration for Venkatesan’s literary work but criticized him for aligning with the DMK’s stance, which Annamalai suggested was politically motivated due to electoral support in Madurai. “The people of Tamil Nadu are watching everything. They know who is doing progressive politics in Tamil Nadu,” Annamalai concluded.

Su Venkatesan, MP from Madurai and State Secretary of the CPIM, has once again sparked controversy by mocking the Sengol, a scepter symbolizing Tamil culture, which was placed in the new parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 May 2023, as a symbol of righteousness and justice. Despite being aware of the true significance of the Sengol, the MP chose to ridicule Tamil culture solely to oppose the BJP in Parliament.

During the motion of thanks to the President in the 18th Lok Sabha, CPIM MP Su Venkatesan began by expressing gratitude to the voters and the people of Madurai, for their trust in him. Ironically, he won from Madurai – the seat of the Sangam age and the abode of Goddess Meenakshi.

Disagreeing with the motion of thanks, he pointed out the absence of any mention of Ayodhya in the President’s speech, unlike the previous session of the 17th Lok Sabha Prime Minister’s last speech extensively covered Ayodhya. Venkatesan said, “If we don’t vote for you, you will abandon Ayodhya and you will abandon God.

Venkatesan then shifted his focus to critique the ‘Sengol,’ a royal scepter symbolizing righteousness, justice, and authority in Indian culture. He ridiculed its narrative by comparing it unfavorably with historical kings known for polygamy and opulent lifestyles in their women’s quarters. Even though, such associations had no relevance to the Sengol. He questioned the symbolism of bringing the Sengol into parliamentary proceedings, asking rhetorically about the historical oppression of women by kings who wielded it.

Venkatesan queried, “Do you know, how many hundreds of women were kept as slaves by each king who held this sengol? What are trying to say to the women of the country by bringing and keeping the sengol here? It is painful.”

Further in his speech, Venkatesan peddled lies claiming that statues of Gandhi and Ambedkar, originally positioned at the parliament’s entrance, had been relocated to a less prominent location, while figures like Chanakya, Savarkar, and the Sengol were prominently displayed inside.

Contradicting his earlier statements in Parliament, Venkatesan asserted that the electorate had voted for his party with a mandate to dismantle what the current administration supports and to champion neglected causes. Continuing his speech, he remarked, “The scepter embodies dual symbols of honor: one representing monarchy and the second is, as you know, symbolizing virtue—namely, honesty.

He also made unsubstantiated claims about BJP leaders from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha disparaging Tamil people.

Indian politicians adept at garnering attention through controversial statements have become proficient in capturing public and media interest through provocative means.

Recently, RK Chaudhary, an MP from the Samajwadi Party (SP), sparked controversy with his remarks on the installation of the Sengol in Parliament. He criticized its presence, labeling it a symbol of monarchy and contrasting it with the democratic symbol of the Constitution. Chaudhary emphasized that after independence, the country should be governed by constitutional principles rather than symbols associated with princely rule.

Speaking to the ANI news channel, sitting MP RK Chaudhary of Mohanlalganj, Uttar Pradesh, stated that, “The Constitution is the symbol of democracy. In its previous tenure, the BJP govt under the leadership of PM Modi installed ‘Sengol’ in Parliament. ‘Sengol’ means ‘Raj-Dand’. It also means ‘Raja ka Danda’. After ending the princely order, the country became independent. Will the country be run by ‘Raja ka danda’ or the Constitution? I demand that Sengol be removed from Parliament to save the Constitution.”

I.N.D.I Alliance Stand

With no surprise, the SP chief Akhilesh Yadav supported Chaudhary’s statement, suggesting it was a reminder to Prime Minister Modi about the significance of the Sengol, which Modi had acknowledged during its installation. “When the Sengol was installed, the PM bowed before it. He might have forgotten this while taking the oath. Maybe our MP’s remark was to remind him of that,” Yadav said.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore echoed Chaudhary’s demand for the removal of the Sengol, criticizing the government’s theatrical approach during the Parliament’s inauguration.

NDA Stand

In response, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla strongly condemned the SP’s stance, accusing them of disrespecting Indian and Tamil culture, and challenging the DMK to clarify their position. Poonawalla asserted, “The Samajwadi Party opposes Sengol in Parliament, calling it ‘Raja ka Dand’. If it was so, why did Jawaharlal Nehru accept it? This shows their mindset. They attack Ramcharitmanas and now Sengol. Does DMK support this insult? They must clarify.”

BJP MP Ravi Kishan criticized Chaudhary and the opposition, likening their objection to the Sengol to attempting to replace revered cultural symbols like lord Ram. Ravi Kishan stated, “They want to replace Lord Ram, the other day they compared their MP with Lord Ram”.

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi defended PM Modi’s actions, asserting their correctness in honoring the Sengol.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Chirag Paswan questioned the appropriateness of Chaudhary’s approach, urging a focus on development rather than divisive politics. Paswan emphasized the newfound recognition of the Sengol by the Prime Minister after decades of neglect.

Voice From Tamil Nadu

Representing Tamil Nadu’s culture, TN BJP President K. Annamalai criticized the statements made by the Samajwadi MP on his official X account. He pointed out that following the elections, the I.N.D.I. Alliance has resumed its criticism of the nation’s culture and traditions. Annamalai questioned whether this reflects the collective stance of the I.N.D.I. Alliance and called for the DMK to provide their views on the matter.

Annamalai wrote, “Now that the elections are over, the I.N.D.I. Alliance is back with their rants against the culture & customs of our Nation. Is this the collective stand of the I.N.D.I. Alliance & we look forward to DMK’s comments on this. We wish to educate the ill-informed Samajwadi MP that Sengol is a symbol of righteousness, which was banished by Pandit Nehru and is restored to its rightful place today by our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl. The reinstatement of the Sengol in the Parliament happened in the presence & the blessings of the Adheenams from Tamil Nadu. The jibe at the Sengol by the SP MP is an insult to the Adheenams of Tamil Nadu, who come from the Backward class community. These comments from SP MP come as no surprise with the reappointment of Thiru Sam Pitroda, who equated South Indians to Africans & reflected how truly I.N.D.I. Alliance members think of South Indians & our culture.”

Former governor of Telangana Tamilisai Soundararajan also condemned the statements of Samajwadi MP stating, Sengol is a symbol of justice, fairness, impartiality & righteousness Mentioned in Ancient Tamil history of chola kings! Thank our Hon’ble @PMOIndia for installing it new parliament. Samajwadi party MPs ignorance is understandable, But DMK Cong Leaders from TN support is unpardonable They stand exposed as their love for Tamil & it’s traditions are only for elections to get votes not in their soul. Modi ji baiters always find fault in everything done in good faith by hob @narendramodiji Their attitude is condemnable”

Sengol – The Pride Of Indian Culture

A sengol is a royal sceptre imbued with symbolism of kingship, righteousness, justice, and authority, reflecting the responsible exercise of power. Originating in Tamil Nadu, it historically served as an emblem of royalty. For instance, among the Madurai Nayakas, the sengol was ceremonially placed before the goddess Meenakshi at the grand temple during significant events, then transferred to the throne room, symbolizing the king’s divine mandate.

Moreover, the sengol functioned as a tool of legitimacy. When the Sethupatis of Ramnad ascended to royal status in the seventeenth century, they obtained a ritually sanctified sengol from priests at the Rameswaram temple. This act underscored the ruler’s accountability to the deity in wielding authority and marked their elevation from local chiefdom to a higher royal stature. Thus, within its historical framework, the sengol epitomizes a concept of righteous kingship.

On 28 May 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi installed this significant sengol in the Lok Sabha chamber, positioned near the Speaker’s chair in the newly constructed Parliament building, following a traditional ceremony. This particular sengol, presented to PM Modi by Adheenams, had previously been accepted by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on the eve of 14 August 1947.

John Brittas, CPI-M MP from Kerala, went on a vehement philippic against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, accusing them of dividing the country and ranted on about the Pran Prathishta ceremony in Ayodhya in January 2024. He also took digs at various members of the BJP in Rajya Sabha as he went on and about his rant.

BJP – Law-Abiding

He started by mocking the BJP for becoming law-abiding all of a sudden, especially after the Pran Prathishta. He said, “Sir, all of a sudden BJP has become law-abiding, how many times they mentioned the Supreme Court? Even during the Pran Prathishta, there was a reference to the Supreme Court. Are they inflicted with Selective Amnesia? They are indeed. What did the Supreme Court say in its verdict? An honourable Judge who presided over the bench is a member of this house. I rarely see him today I saw him for 2 minutes but he disappeared. I wanted to speak about that. Is it not a fact the same Supreme Court said there was a conspiracy, calculated act, and egregious violation? It further said the desecration in 1949 leading to the ouster of Muslims and its eventual destruction on December 6 constituted a serious violation of the rule of law. Who did it? Rajeev Saab, you people did it. All of a sudden they forget about it, they forget about the Supreme Court verdict. Now see the sad predicament of this country.”

Ram Is For All

From complaining about the BJP, he went to staking claim for “Ram”. He said, “Sir, they all speak about Ram. Ram belongs to us also, see my Ram is Mahatma Gandhi’s Ram, of compassion, of harmony, and love. you also have a Ram, you also have a Ram but there is a prefix to that. You know what is a prefix, their Ram is Nathuram. That is a difference between our Ram and your Ram.”

While Brittas is a CPI-M member, he seems to be parroting the views of the Congress and the DMKas seen in the recent gathering in Kerala where Youth Congress members conducted a discussion where they vehemently spoke about RSS which killed Gandhi, ably supported by DMK’s Salma.

Speaking about Mahatma Gandhi, he said, “Madam, let me just say one thing Mahatma Gandhi in Harijan wrote precisely about them sir, ‘to repeat Rama nama and to follow the way of Ravana is actual practice worse than useless. It is sheer hypocrisy, one might deceive oneself or the world, but one could not deceive the Almighty. You cannot deceive Lord Rama because though you are harping old Rama, your only intention is to reap political benefit, nothing else.’

He also added, “The situation in this country, it’s vitiated. You would be surprised Madam, a professor in an organization, in an Institute posted on her social media account that she is proud of Godse for saving India. This is because you are inspiring the academics to say that. can you ever think about such a situation say 5 years back in this country? This is where the country has been taken.”

PM Or High Priest?

Unable to control his anguish over PM Modi’s increasing popularity after the Pran Prathishta ceremony, he said, “Sir nowadays we cannot distinguish between the Prime Minister and the high priest. Whether our Prime Minister is a high priest or the high priest is a Prime Minister? If there is a political programme, it will be turned into a

religious programme. If it is a religious programme, it would be turned into a political programme. They all accused us of staying away from Ayodhya Pran Prathishta. What did the Shankaracharyas do? Will you send ED and CBI after Shankaracharyas? All of them stayed away because they didn’t want to be part of this political drama which you were trying to whip up there in Ayodhya.”

He then went on to remind the house that the date 4 February was very significant because Sardar Patel had banned the RSS on that day.

Sengol – A Symbol Of Monarchy

Connecting the Sengol to the Monarchy system, Brittas who was among the many MPs who boycotted the new Parliament building inauguration ceremony and had said that the PM was bypassing the President, now said, “I was so sad to see The Honourable Rashtrapati being preceded, paraded behind a Sengol, is it a modern democratic country, madam? Is it not a fact that Sardar Patel would be turning in his grave because he was instrumental in dumping Sengol, Simhasan, Crown to redeem this country from all these monarchies? you want to take back this country to the monarchy era. Shortly you will see a Simhasan here, the parliament would be turned into it.”

PM Finishes Everything He Prostrates To

Continuing his rant about the PM, he said, “I am always afraid when the prime minister prostate in front of an organisation or institution. prime minister when he took charge as the Prime Minister, he came and prostrated on the steps of Parliament, he finished the Parliament. Wherever he prostates, he is finishing it. If he calls mitron, there is going to be a mystery for the people. You know what happened during the demonetisation. So you are doing an injustice to Mr. Sardar Patel by bringing back the Sengol and Simhasans and of course, the clowns also will be back, because Palace clowns were there, naturally when monarchy comes, Palace clowns also will come back. Sir, it’s an insult to the Republic of course.”

It is noteworthy to remember that Brittas, a Christian himself, had made fun of the Adheenams during the time of the Sengol installation in new Parliament building. He said, “What do these Sanyasis have to do with the Parliament? Are they representatives of India? Have they ever voted in an election? What nonsense is happening in this country? Do you think people of South will stomach all this humbug that is being doled out? No! Never!”

PM Must Do Pran Prathishta In Manipur

Continuing the Pran Prathishta rant, he said, “Madam the point is very simple, sabka saath sabka vikas, we are tired of listening to this repeatedly. Whom will you people support? You did Pran Prathishta, I don’t want to dispute about Pran Prathishta because these are times when human beings will have to give PRan to gods that is it. But the primary responsibility of the Prime Minister is to give Pran to the citizens, not the gods. He should obviously stick to his duties he should go to Manipur and conduct a Pran Prathishta for the citizens, that should be done first. Instead of that, don’t create political drama to just get some votes.”

Passing Bills Like 2-Minute Dosas

Surprised at the speed at which bills were passed in the Parliament, he said, “Sir Madam, now the pastime of BJP RSS is dismantling institutions, institution after institution are dismantled. we all talk about what happened to the standing committees, is something happening? She (Priyanka Chaturvedi) has not attended a Parliamentary standing committee for 2-3 months. There is no committee, there is no perusal, they are not sending any bill, they are passing bills like making dosa in 2 minutes,d at laws are being made.”

If You Dig Further You Will Go To Middle East

In what seemed like he was mocking the recent ASI survey at Kashi Vishwanath temple, he said, “What is this situation? What kind of an atmosphere you people have created? You’re digging digging every religious institute. You need to dig further, further, how far you are going to dig? How far you are going to dig? Once you dig further you will find Buddha Vihara and Jain Vihara, if you dig further you will have to go to the Middle East, if you dig further you will have to go to Africa where all your ancestors came from. So what is the futility the purpose of this digging?”

Statistics?

Wanting to present some statistics to add weight to his speech, he compared the GDP in the UPA era and the Modi era. He said, “Sir, now selective statistics what is happening in this country? The country has been taken to a different level, 56 inch 5 trillion economy. During the UPA what was the GDP 6.8, in your 10-year rule, it is 5.9. you talk about what? redeeming 25 crore people from poverty, that is because of the extrapolation of the data by the Niti Ayog, you have dispensed with the census, you don’t have the headcount ratio, you add those things.”

Here is an India Today report on the comparison of GDP in both Manmohan Singh and Modi regimes. The graphs speak for themselves, it is unclear where Brittas came up with those figures.

If it was a real picture, it would have reflected in the Global Hunger Index. Where are you in the global hunger index?”

When Taliban-ruled Afghanistan can outperform India in a Press Freedom Index, then our readers will know the credibility of the report.

Media To Modia

Accusing the government of “controlling” the media, he said, “Now again you go to any index – Human Development Index, you go to Press Freedom Index. You people have changed the vowel. First, it was E in media, you removed the E and replaced it with O. Now it has become Modia. the media in this country has been converted as Modia.”

States Will Protest

He accused the government of taking away funds from the states and that they would protest in Delhi against this. He said, “Now, all the states are protesting, all our rights even sir your rights have been weaned away by this government that is the plight. Kerala is protesting Here For the First Time The entire Ministry MLAs, MPs from Kerala and Karnataka are going to camp in Delhi to protest against your unitary Tendencies, starving the states, fleecing the states.”

He concluded by accusing the centre that, “When you talk about sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka prayaas, your only intention is to segregate, create polarisation, divide this country take this country to the Medieval Era, we will not allow this and 2024 elections would be a waterloo for you.”

Actor Prakash Raj has once again found himself in controversy, this mocking Hindu seers who had attended the new Parliament inauguration and placed the Sengol. The man was in the news a while back for the distasteful meme he shared about the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

The actor was booked for this post and owing to which he came up with an explanation that it was an old Malayali joke.

In the wake of Udhayanidhi Stalin‘s Hindumisic comments that stirred anger among Hindus across India, Prakash Raj appears to be capitalizing on the same sentiment by making another post insulting Hindu seers as “Tanatanis”, a mockery of “Sanatani” (Hindus). He tweeted on Twitter (X), “Back to the Future ..a #Tanathani parliament.. dear CITIZENS are you okay with this… #justasking”

He shared a photo of the Aadheenams sharing space with Prime Minister Modi during the Sengol ceremony before its installation in the new Parliament premises.

It has been noticed that several woke and left-liberal self-proclaimed atheists refer to Sanathana Dharma as “Tanathana Dharma” and other such mocking words.

Many netizens replied a resounding YES to his question in the post.

On 3 September 2023, he shared the below meme which said, “Hindus are not #TanaThanis .. Tanathanis are #AntiHumans .. RT if you agree. Happy Sunday to all #justasking” with the image of EV Ramasamy Naicker and BR Ambedkar.

Several netizens questioned his real agenda. One of them shared a picture of him lighting a lamp at a movie set, with the caption, “Anti human Prakash Raj on movie set”.

Prakash Raj was also accused recently for encroaching into government land and converting a public road into a private road that led to his under construction home in Kodaikanal. After complaints from the farmers in the villages around Kodaikanal, notice was issued to him by the Kodaikanal Zonal Deputy Block Development Officer asking him to provide clarification regarding the alleged occupation of government land in the Vilpatti panchayat of Kodaikanal for the construction of a bungalow.

The actor has in the past criticised Prime Minister Modi by sharing several memes comparing him to Hitler and addressing him as “Station Master”.

The no-confidence motion against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA is being debated in Parliament. In connection with this, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi raised a few questions to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. However, just as Finance Minister was about to start her response, most of the DMK MPs and other allies left the Parliament.

Kanimozhi put forth the question, “You have installed the Sengol in the new parliament with great fanfare but do you really know the history of Tamil Nadu? Have you heard of the Pandiyan Sengol and also do you know the history of Kannagi? Please read the Silappadigaram, don’t impose Hindi.”

On The Question Of Sengol

Finance Minister read out the questions and pointed out the fact that the Sengol particularly, as given to our first Prime Minister was also given by Aadenams who are a unique institution for Tamil Nadu. She said that the same party had no objection when the sacred Sengol has been treated as a walking stick for PM Nehru. She reminded the House that it was kept in a private house/museum and it was used as a Chhaddi (walking stick) and not Sengol.

She asked pointedly, “Doesn’t hurt that the Tamil pride? Is that not an insult to the Tamils? So when PM Modi restored it (Sengol) to its rightful place in Lok Sabha, that became an issue, that is an insult to the Tamils. The Sengol was ignored for decades. The Sengol was lost in history and kept in some museum. The Kashi Tamil Sangamam showed how Tamil Nadu and Kashi have very deep connections. The first time you heard Tamil being quoted in the United Nations. In ‘Mann ki Baat’, PM has used Tamil so many times”.

On The Question Of Jallikattu

She also spoke about how Congress had termed Jallikattu, a sport intrinsic to Tamil culture, a “barbaric sport”. She said, “It was during the UPA government when DMK was a partner in that government that Jallikattu which is a typical reflective of Tamil culture was called a barbaric sport and was banned by that very same UPA in which DMK was a member. Is it barbaric? It took PM Modi to permit the sport in 2016 and Jallikattu was played in TN.”

Hindi Imposition

DMK MP Kanimozhi also asked the government to stop imposing Hindi on Tamilians and asked them to read the Silappadikaram since it would give valuable lessons to everyone.

Nirmala Sitharaman, in response, emphasized that in Tamil Nadu, a mandate against learning Hindi and Sanskrit was enforced in the guise of resisting Hindi imposition, and it constituted an ideological imposition. She said that the government might have the power to promote Tamil, but it did not have the power to prevent people from learning Hindi or Sanskrit. Despite this, she said they prevented the Tamilians from studying Hindi or Sanskrit due to their hubris. She said, “I am recounting my lived experience”. She added that, “It is the same Tamil Nadu that stops every individual from learning Hindi or Sanskrit and today in the name of language they are telling us to read Silappadikaram.”

Nirmala Sitharaman quoted Ma Po Si (Mylai Ponnusami Sivagnanam) who is considered an authority in Silappadikaram and was given the title Silambuchelvar, wrote in Tamil Murasu magazine about Silappadikkaram. Nirmala Sitharaman said our Prime Minister is already implementing Silappadikaram principles through Ek Bharat Sreshta Bharat. She quoted, Silappadikaram tells us, “We are not Dravidians, we are Tamilians. Our motherland is not Dravidam but Tamizhagam. Our northern border is Vengadam, not Vindhya, and beyond Vengadam if people’s cultural habits and practices are in one form, they may be slightly different but not opposite to us. he talks about India’s oneness.” She said, although Kanimozhi may not be speaking separatist language, separatism influences the kind of language with which Kanimozhi tells the Prime Minister to read the Silappadikaram.

On The Question Of Draupadi

Nirmala Sitharaman pointed out that Kanimozhi made reference to Draupadi from the Mahabharata, highlighting her humiliation and disrobing. While acknowledging it, Sitharaman said, it is about women, the act of disrobing, demeaning, and disgracing women. She said everyone must regard this matter with utmost seriousness and that she was confident that Kanimozhi too holds this concern, and didn’t intend to undermine it. She concurred that her concern was valid and that when it comes to the suffering of women, regardless of the context, we must address it earnestly without resorting to playing politics. However, she said, she wanted to remind Kanimozhi and the entire assembly of a particular incident.

“I agree that women suffering anywhere – Manipur, Delhi, Rajasthan – will have to be taken seriously. No politics played. But I want to remind this entire House of one incident which happened on 25th March 1989 in Tamil Nadu Assembly. a sacred sabha. then she hadn’t become CM, she was the leader of the Opposition, the first woman. Jayalalithaa’s saree was pulled in Tamil Nadu in the Assembly. She was the Leader of the Opposition. The DMK members who were seated there heckled her and laughed at her, made of her. You’re talking of Kaurava sabha, of Draupadi? Has DMK forgotten Jayalalithaa? You pulled her saree, you demeaned her. That day Jayalalithaa took an oath that she will never come to the House unless she becomes the CM. Two years later, she returned as the CM of Tamil Nadu…” Sitharaman said it was unbelievable that a party that was in power at that time, where a leader of the Opposition had her saree pulled and demeaned, was talking about Draupadi when all the members were mute spectators of the injustice happening to J Jayalalithaa.

Speaking at the Tamil Nadu Dialogues 2023 event at Kumbakonam on , the esteemed Madurai Aadheenam head pontiff Sri Harihara Desika Swamigal and Sri La Sri Suryanar Kovil Aadheenam showered praises on Prime Minister Modi. Ever since our independence, we have had 14 Prime Ministers, but none has shown such profound respect for the Tamil language and culture. Madurai Aadheenam acknowledged how Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embraced the Thirrukural and Thevaram and gave respect to all the Aadheenams by inviting them for the opening ceremony of the new Parliament building.

Madurai Aadheenam Sri Harihara Desika Swamigal listed several reasons for honouring Modi with the Sengol. Firstly, his efforts to clean the Ganges River were acknowledged. Secondly, his renovation of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple was highly appreciated. Thirdly, when many criticized the feasibility of constructing the Ayodhya temple, Madurai Aadheenam said that it was PM Modi who turned it into a tangible reality waiting to be consecrated. Additionally, he said, “Modi’s establishment of a new Parliament symbolizes the decolonisation of our minds, fostering a deeper sense of patriotism as we celebrate our Independence Day. The respect he has shown us will forever be cherished.”

Madurai Aadheenam also accused the Congress government of mishandling the Eelam Tamil issue and highlighted the sufferings endured by the Tamil community. Conversely, he acknowledged Modi’s efforts in providing houses and restoring hope for the Eelam Tamil victims. He pointed out that it is for these reasons that Madurai Aadheenam presented him with the sengol. He called upon the people to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in winning more seats in Tamil Nadu.

Following Madurai Aadheenam’s remarks, Sri La Sri Suryanar Kovil Aadheenam expressed that Prime Minister Modi maintained a close relationship with Tamil Nadu. He cited the Kashi Tamil Sangam and Saurashtra Tamil Sangam events organized by PM Modi. He said, “The opening of the new Parliament witnessed the participation of the Aadheenams from Tamil Nadu, symbolised by the placement of the “Sengol” from 1947 and Modi’s remarkable contributions to Tamil Nadu”. He credited former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for India’s respectable position on the world stage, especially citing the Pokhran nuclear tests. Modi has played a significant role in continuing Vajpayee’s legacy.

Sri La Sri Suryanar Kovil Aadheenam urged citizens to pay their taxes and emphasised the importance of exercising their voting rights to decide who should come to power in this land for the better future of India. He expressed his everlasting gratitude towards PM Modi.

Here’s what PM Modi said in his interaction with Tamil Hindu Aadheenams before the Sengol ceremony.

The Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam has come down heavy on The Hindu newspaper for misquoting the pontiff head and spreading misinformation about the Sengol being a symbolic transfer of power.

On 8 June 2023, The Hindu had published an article titled “Not clear if Sengol was presented to Mountbatten, says Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam head” in which the Adheenam pontiff was quoted saying “What was the use in giving the Sengol to Lord Mountbatten? He was after all leaving India by handing all powers.”

In the article, it was asserted that there is a lack of evidence to support the involvement of Mountbatten and Rajaji in the transfer of power during the sengol event.

The report further said that the Adheenam head agreed when it was pointed out that there was no evidence that the sceptre was regarded as a symbol of “transfer of power”.

This report became a fodder for the Congress to unleash yet another attack on the Modi Government for celebrating the Sengol.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed that the sengol, symbolizing the transfer of power from the British to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, has been debunked.

In response to the continuous allegations made by The Hindu, on 9 June 2023 the Thiruvaduthurai Aadheenam has issued a strong statement denouncing the spread of misinformation regarding the historic event of the Sengol being handed over to Mountbatten before reaching Nehru. The Aadheenam said that it was deeply concerned by the venomous narrative being propagated and sought to set the record straight and clarify the facts surrounding the incident.

Thiruvaduthurai Aadheenam expressed dissatisfaction and claimed that the news article published in The Hindu was filled with malicious intent.

According to Aadheenam, this news article deviated from the actual historical events and deliberately twisted the words of Aadheenam during an unannounced meeting with a reporter after the morning pooja.

The Thiruvadhuthurai Aadheenam expressed pride in its significant role in the Sengol ceremony that took place in 1947. A group from Thiruvadhuthurai traveled to Delhi with the sengol after accepting an invitation. The Adheenam categorically stated that the Sengol was presented to Mountbatten and subsequently purified with Ganga water and handed over to Jawaharlal Nehru. Ultimately, the Sengol reached the hands of Nehru, which was what the Adheenam had said to The Hindu reporter when specifically asked if it was presented to Mountbatten.

The Adheenam in its statement condemning the The Hindu’s distortion of the pontiff’s statement said that the recently published history of Thiruvadhuthurai Aadheenam contains a chapter titled “The Greatness of sengol,” which provides detailed information about the event. According to the Adheenam, this chapter also confirms that the Sengol was presented to Mountbatten after which it was ritualistically purified and presented to Nehru.

“In relation to this, Thiru Maasilaamani Pillai, the personal assistant of the 20th Head Pontiff, who is currently 96 years old, has provided a clear explanation of the sequence of events. He serves as a living witness to the sengol event that took place in 1947. Thiru Maasilaamani Pillai has shared his personal memories of the sengol event, noting that it occurred due to the interest of Thiru Chakravarthy Rajagopalachari. He also mentioned that the Madras Collector personally visited Aadheenam during 1947 and actively participated in the preparations for the Sengol event. It is worth mentioning that Thiru Maasilaamani Pillai revealed these details long before The Hindu’s news article was published.”, the Adheenam said in the statement.

The Aadheenam expressed deep disappointment with the media outlets distorting the truth adding that it greatly affects their sentiments.

“The absence of photographic evidence of Mountbatten with the Sengol can be attributed to the fact that the Aadheenam did not have cameras in their possession at that time. Nevertheless, the Aadheenam’s team diligently fulfilled their duties and ensured the recitation of Tamil Thirumurais (holy scriptures). They returned to the Aadheenam and provided a detailed account of the event. Over time, this event has been documented in various media sources.”, the Adheenam further added.

The act of The Hindu publishing news without substantial evidence and attempting to tarnish the reputation of Thiruvaduthurai aadheenam has faced strong criticism from numerous political commentators including S Gurumurthy.

He tweeted that, “It is depressing that The Hindu has ended up abetting the Congress which had destroyed all evidence on sengol & destroyed the identity of the sengol itself to erase the history of 14/8/1947 instead of asking the congress why it suppressed the sengol”

Notably, Senior journalist Malini Parthasarathy had recently announced her departure as the Chairperson of The Hindu Group Publishing and also resigned from the Board of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited (THGPPL). In explaining her decision, she cited the diminishing space for her editorial perspectives and concerns about ideological bias as the primary factors influencing her departure. There have been allegations that The Hindu has been involved in disseminating false information without adequate verification or supporting evidence.
