Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Selvaperunthagai has triggered a major controversy after accusing the Water Resources Department (WRD) of caste-based favoritism and administrative irregularities. It is noteworthy that Duraimurugan is the DMK minister of Water Resources department in Tamil Nadu.

His remarks came after he was not invited to the opening ceremony of the Chembarambakkam dam, an event overseen by the department.

Selvaperunthagai alleged that caste considerations dominate postings within the WRD and referred to the presence of “a scoundrel” in the department who, he claimed, influences appointments and operations. The comments have sparked a political storm, prompting scrutiny of recent transfers and promotions within the department.

According to a report by ABP Nadu, several senior engineers expressed discontent over alleged violations of norms in recent appointments. They pointed to two key figures within the department; one said to be close to Water Resources Minister Durai Murugan, and another, Selvakumar, who was recently appointed as Superintending Engineer of the Palar Basin Circle in Chennai.

Selvakumar was promoted under G.O. (2D) No.15 (Water Resources A1 Dept) issued on 2 May 2025 but reportedly declined a subsequent posting as Joint Chief Engineer and went on leave for four months. Despite refusing the higher office position, he was later appointed to his preferred field post as Superintending Engineer through G.O. (D) No.143 (Water Resources A2 Dept) dated 16 October 2025.

Department insiders allege that the appointment was made with direct intervention from Minister Durai Murugan and Water Resources Department Secretary Jayakanthan, bypassing procedural rules. Senior engineers have voiced concern that key positions, including the Chennai Zonal Chief Engineer, Palar Basin Circle Monitoring Engineer, and Kanchipuram Executive Engineer — are being filled by individuals from the same caste, allegedly undermining transparency and departmental fairness.

Sources said that lucrative projects worth nearly ₹14,000 crore including JICA-assisted initiatives and a proposed new dam near Thiruporur fall under the Palar region, leading to speculation that trusted officers have been strategically placed in charge of these projects.

Selvaperunthagai’s supporters argue that his exclusion from the Chembarambakkam event was deliberate, reflecting caste bias against him as a Scheduled Caste leader. They also claim that the dominance of one community in high-ranking WRD positions contradicts the state government’s commitment to social justice.

Responding to the controversy, Department Secretary Jayakanthan, IAS, said that Selvakumar had cited health reasons for declining his earlier posting and was reassigned to the Palar Basin Circle accordingly. He did not respond to other allegations raised about the appointment process.

Senior engineers have urged the Chief Secretary and higher authorities to review the matter, warning that the issue could cause embarrassment to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the DMK government if left unaddressed. Selvaperunthagai is said to have discussed the matter directly with the Chief Minister.

On 25 September 2025, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president and MLA K Selvaperunthagai strongly criticised AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) for likening him to a “beggar in patched clothes.” The remark was made by Palaniswami a day earlier, on 24 September 2025, while mocking Selvaperunthagai’s previous affiliations with multiple political parties.

EPS during his Nilgiris campaign said, “Today, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President, Mr. Selvaperunthagai, is speaking. He has come from many parties. Have you seen beggar’s wearing patched shirt? Like a beggar’s coat that is patched up, he has switched many parties. Whenever he joins a party, he follows that party’s ideology. That is Selvaperunthagai. He is not trying to develop his party today. The state in-charge for the Tamil Nadu Congress appointed a person who is giving his opinion. The former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President, Mr. Alagiri, is giving his opinion. He demands that since they are part of the ruling coalition, they need more seats. He even demands a share in the government if the DMK comes to power again, saying the DMK will not come to power otherwise.

But Selvaperunthagai, as a Congress party president, is saying, “When Rahul Gandhi himself is not asking for a share in the government, you should not ask for it.” If he were truly a Congress loyalist, if he had a love for the Congress party, if he had worked for the Congress since the beginning, would he have had that thought? He does not have that thought at all. We must realize that the current Congress President, Mr. Selvaperunthagai, is today a supporter of the DMK and the DMK government. He is not loyal to the Congress party, but he is loyal to the DMK. He speaks loyally in the assembly, and he speaks loyally outside as well. However, the Congress workers and the Congress leaders have raised the sentiment that they want a coalition government and a share in the government. The split between the Congress and the DMK has begun now.”

While EPS questioned Selvaperunthagai’s loyalty to his party, the TNCC chief responded on social media, denouncing the “beggar in a patched shirt” remark as not just a personal attack on an elected representative, but also a disrespectful jibe at millions of economically disadvantaged people. He argued that seeking the trust of the electorate in a democracy should not be demeaned as “begging,” and accused EPS of forgetting the very people who had helped him rise to power.

TNCC chief Selvaperunthagai wrote, “To insult a representative elected by the people as a ‘beggar’ is not just an act of persecuting an individual; it is an act that degrades the dignity and lives of crores of poor and marginalized people. Such a venomous comment reveals the depth of anti-social sentiments entrenched in politics and the arrogance of prosperity that is unaware of true hardship. Seeking the trust of the people is not begging; it is the very foundation of democracy. You walked the path of leaders like MGR and Jayalalithaa, and with the votes of the marginalized, you became an MLA, a Minister, and eventually crawled your way up to become the Chief Minister. Yet, today, you stand so far removed that you cannot see the pain and life struggles of the people. You travel in someone else’s luxurious Bentley car, concealing your face in Delhi. Then, how can you know or understand the suffering and crises faced by the poor of this country? When you call me a ‘beggar – with a patched-up shirt,’ you are not just insulting me, but also the self-respect and dignity of crores of Tamils who live in humble circumstances. Even if I wear torn clothes, those clothes carry the tears, dreams, and hopes of the downtrodden people of this nation. The votes cast by the marginalized people are my voice and my political identity. I am indebted to them for their self-respect and their daily struggle for life. That dignity and that struggle are not worthy of anyone’s contempt. Do those who believe in democracy support Edappadi Palaniswami’s anti-democratic comment?”

While Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) Chief Coordinator Seeman has been relentlessly targeting actor-turned-politician Vijay with sharp jabs, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President Selvaperunthagai has now added fuel to the fire with a mocking remark that has gone viral.

At a recent public event in Chennai, Seeman and Selvaperunthagai briefly met and exchanged greetings. During their interaction, Selvaperunthagai made a sarcastic comment, “Is the squirrel issue speeding up?” a reference that traditionally used linked to Vijay, whom Seeman has been ridiculing as a “squirrel” in his speeches.

Initially confused by the remark, Seeman paused before realizing the reference, after which he and others nearby broke into laughter. The moment, caught on video, is now making the rounds online and generating wide discussion.

In recent weeks, he has frequently mocked Vijay in press conferences and public meetings. At a Madurai press meet, Seeman sarcastically quipped, “The squirrel should shout ‘jungle, jungle’… now it cries ‘uncle, uncle.’” The jab appeared to question Vijay’s shift in political messaging.

In another event held in Thiruvallur, part of a tree-planting campaign by NTK, Seeman once again referred to Vijay indirectly, saying, “When tigers enter the forest, no squirrel to be seen. We’re also working to grow real forests, even for the squirrels in them.”

Following reports that Tamil Nadu Congress State President and Sriperumbudur MLA K. Selvaperunthagai was allegedly barred by temple authorities from taking part in the kumbhabhishekam ceremony at the Vallakottai Murugan Temple in Kancheepuram, senior BJP leader and former governor Tamilisai Soundararajan who was present at the event released a detailed statement clarifying what occurred.

In her nuanced explanation, Tamilisai emphasized that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding and denied any suggestion of caste-based discrimination at the temple.

Previously speaking to the media, Selvaperunthagai remarked, “This issue has persisted for 2000 years; it can’t be resolved overnight. I pray that no harm comes to our Chief Minister, who tirelessly works 24 hours a day for good governance, nor to the Minister of the Hindu Religious & Endowments Department, who is doing an even better job than the devotional movements. As a devotee I stood other devotees, I couldn’t even see the deity, but everyone else managed to have a glimpse.

On 9 July 2025, Tamilisai Soundararajan responded to the controversy surrounding the Vallakottai Murugan temple consecration, denying allegations of caste-based discrimination. She emphasized that the issue arose from security protocols and the entitled behavior of certain individuals (Selvaperunthagai), not social exclusion. Describing her own visit, she highlighted how she humbly joined the public without seeking special treatment (despite she was former governor), unlike others who, she implied, demanded privileged access due to their official positions. Tamilisai criticized the politicization of the event, stating that devotion should take precedence over power or status. She condemned those twisting the incident into a caste issue, asserting that Lord Murugan would bless genuine devotion not arrogance disguised as victimhood.

Tamilisai Soundararajan via her official X account stated, “My Appan Murugan, Thiruchendur Murugan’s consecration ceremony. I wished to have a darshan of my appan in Thiruchendur. I felt that the strictness of the ‘Sekars’ outweighed the arrangements made by the ‘Irai Sevagargal’ (divine servants). The Sekars’ self-promotion seemed to overshadow the devotion of the Sevagargal. I heard about a consecration ceremony at Valla Kottai and decided that wherever it was, it was still my lord. I concluded that my lord was calling me there. As a devotee, I stopped my car a kilometer before and reached the temple with the general public. I climbed the steps with devotion. I arrived two hours early and waited among the common people. No special seating was offered to me, nor did I ask for any, like the ‘Mutharasars’ grumble about. I stood and waited as a devotee of Murugan.

I asked if I could go up. They said, ‘If it’s just you, come.’ I left everyone who came with me and went up alone. Even after climbing, I stood there for half an hour as a devotee of Murugan. Some people arrived late, in a hurry, not as devotees, but carrying their positions on their shoulders. They said I couldn’t go up alone and that those who came with me should also go. ‘This is Murugan’s consecration stage, not a political stage,’ they said, ‘for security reasons, only he should go up.’ The one carrying his position insisted that everyone should go up asking do you know who we are? Disregarding the safety of others, two or three of them climbed up arrogantly.

The consecration ceremony proceeded well. After that, to witness the special darshan, I joined the crowd as a devotee among the general public and sat in front of Murugan. I waited with the public, and Murugan also waited. They were waiting for the esteemed official to arrive. Time kept passing, but the high-ranking official didn’t come. When asked why, they said he was waiting for the special gate to be opened. Murugan waited, the devotees waited, and the esteemed individual (Perunthaigayalar), with his retinue of assistants, waited for the special gate to open. Apparently, he got angry and left because the special gate was delayed in opening.

However, what transpired there was an expression of devotion, but it was wrongly proclaimed as an expression of caste. But some ‘Ravikumars‘ twisting this into an act of atrocity and arrogantly wounding the public darshan, as if to say, ‘Should I stand as one among ten?’ is strongly condemnable. The high-ranking official Perunthagai has apparently asked, ‘When women are allowed, why can’t I go?’ So, what happened there was not an atrocity but an injustice against a woman, but I did not vocalize this because I went there only for worship. I did not perceive gender discrimination there, as if they were allowing other women but not me. I only saw the expression of devotion.

They say that they went to ‘Sekars’ home to apologize after they have exaggerated a non-existent problem by creating a huge fuss over a perfectly executed consecration ceremony, causing distress to devotees, and then staging a drama as if they themselves were inconvenienced. The person who spoke arrogantly saying, ‘When people wait for many hours in Tirupati, can they not wait in a temple in Tamil Nadu?’ without apologizing for the inconvenience caused to the public, have now reportedly went to the ‘Sekars” homes to apologize for a non-existent issue.

My Appan Murugan is watching all these unfolding dramas. He is smiling at those who deceive. I reiterate, I went as a devotee and worshipped with devotion. I carried devotion, not position. Those who came carrying their positions have left carrying blame. He must understand what transpired there was nothing more than the security arrangements for Kandhan’s devotees climbing the scaffolding, not a katapanchayat. The Lord of the Six Abodes is watching all these unfolding dramas! My Appan will bless those who come bearing great devotion. But what if they come bearing power and arrogance?”

The Congress party appears to have no shame, repeatedly and deliberately using a distorted India map in its brochures and pamphlets—maps that cede parts of Jammu and Kashmir to China and Pakistan.

Now, the Tamil Nadu Congress has followed the same pattern. On one of its official X pages—specifically that of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Research Department—it shared a misleading map of India while promoting a party campaign.

The cover of the book titled “Jumla Government’s false facts and realities” prepared by Research Department of Tamil Nadu Congress shows Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir as part of Pakistan and Aksai Chin as part of China.

The post read, “Tomorrow, the Tamil Nadu Congress Research Department will launch the #HundredDaysHundredPlaces campaign to expose the lies of the Jumla government. The campaign will be inaugurated by Dr. A. Sellakumar M.B.B.S., Ex-M.P., Permanent Invitee of the All India Congress Working Committee.”

The attached pamphlet included a distorted representation of India’s map, which drew sharp criticism and widespread backlash.

Only recently the Congress party found itself at the center of controversy after sharing a post on its official X account on 18 June 2025, that featured a map of Pakistan including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) — a territory legally claimed by India. The post, intended to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy, included the caption, “Narendra Modi has ruined the foreign policy”, alongside a video depicting the disputed map.

The use of the map sparked widespread outrage, with critics accusing Congress of promoting anti-national sentiments and aligning with Pakistani narratives. Many called it a serious lapse in judgment, alleging the party was indirectly endorsing Pakistan’s territorial claims. Following intense backlash from political opponents and the public alike, the Congress deleted the post without offering an immediate explanation.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai has reiterated that there was nothing wrong with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s decision to cede the uninhabited Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka in 1974. However, the party now supports the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, urging the Central government to take steps to reclaim the island.

Speaking to reporters on 2 April 2025, outside the Assembly, Selvaperunthagai emphasized that Indira Gandhi merely transferred 282 acres of barren land, which lacked even drinking water, in exchange for a much larger area of land. He urged the media to consider both agreements, not just the one involving Katchatheevu. When questioned if he still deemed the decision acceptable today, he firmly defended it, asserting that it was the right decision then and remains so even now.

Selvaperunthagai said, “Journalists, please do your research. Everyone standing here is well-educated. How many lakhs of acres did Indira Gandhi secure for India by giving up a small parcel of 282 acres of rain-fed land that doesn’t even have drinking water? Don’t focus on just one agreement; look at two agreements.”
When further questioned about whether the decision taken at that time was correct, he raised his voice and responded, “Even today, it is the right decision. We have not retracted anything. It was right then, and it is right now. No fisherman has ever said that retrieving Katchatheevu will allow them to fish freely without their nets being cut or boats being damaged. Reclaiming it is our responsibility, and there is no disagreement on that. The nation will eventually understand that Indira Gandhi did not make a wrong decision.”

He also highlighted that Indira Gandhi played a crucial role in securing vast areas of land for India through the Wadge Bank agreement, which brought valuable mineral resources to the country.

After YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar accused Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President Selvaperunthagai of orchestrating an attack on his home—where unidentified individuals disguised as sanitation workers ransacked the house, terrorized his mother, and smeared filth—Selvaperunthagai has once again come under scrutiny.  His past controversies have resurfaced, adding to the growing allegations against him. Notably, last year, the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) wrote to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, demanding Selvaperunthagai’s removal from his position, accusing him of alleged involvement in the murder cases of former BSP state president K. Armstrong, Auditor Pandian, Albert, and PPG Shankar. Now, similar calls are being raised once again, urging the Congress leadership to strip him of power due to his alleged criminal background.

The Attack On ‘Savukku’ Shankar

A group of unidentified individuals, disguised as sanitation workers, unlawfully entered the residence of YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar on 24 March 2025. The intruders reportedly ransacked the house, terrorized his mother, and smeared filth across the rooms and dining table.

According to police sources, the attack was allegedly motivated by remarks Shankar made in one of his YouTube videos, which the assailants deemed offensive to sanitation workers. Shankar later took to social media to share details of the incident, including screenshots of a video call made by one of the trespassers using his mother’s phone.

Shankar accused Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President Selvaperunthagai of orchestrating the attack, claiming that his loyal supporter, V. Vanishree Vijayakumar, led the assault.

Social media posts by V. Vanishree Vijayakumar suggested that the incident was premeditated, as she appeared to have planned the act in advance. Evidence from her now-deleted Facebook posts indicated that she was live-streaming the event.

Vanishree’s social media post showcased her close ties with the Congress party and firm support for TNCC Chief Selvaperunthagai.

Before ‘Savukku Shankar’ It Was Dr. Krishnasamy Of Puthiya Tamizhagam

In a development mirroring the attack on YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar’s residence—where unknown individuals terrorized his mother and smeared filth after he exposed corruption allegations—Dr. Krishnasamy’s Puthiya Tamizhagam Party has also faced similar intimidation previously.

On 3 January 2001, Puthiya Tamizhagam party chief Dr. Krishnasamy announced Selvaperunthagai’s expulsion from all party duties after uncovering his past involvement in criminal activities. Reports at the time stated that Selvaperunthagai, who was accused in the murder of Auditor Pandian, had been removed from the party.

Pandian, a resident of Chennai’s Thiruvanmiyur, was murdered four years prior. However, the case stalled due to the alleged interference of a senior police officer. Following a petition by Pandian’s son, Balaji, the High Court transferred the case to the CB-CID, which accelerated the investigation under DIG Ashok Kumar. Selvaperunthagai was accused of hiring a contract killer and had his anticipatory bail request rejected before being arrested.

At the time, Selvaperunthagai was a member of the Puthiya Tamizhagam Party, serving in an executive role. Dr. Krishnasamy, distancing the party from him, clarified that Selvaperunthagai was never appointed as General Secretary and that the murder case predated his membership in the party. He emphasized that the party, built on the sacrifices of hardworking people, would not tolerate any misconduct for financial gain. Until Selvaperunthagai was cleared of all charges, his membership was revoked.

In a dramatic turn of events, just days after his expulsion from the party, alleged supporters of Selvaperunthagai launched a violent attack on the Puthiya Tamizhagam party office on 7 January 2001. Enraged by his removal, they stormed the office—located in the Viswanathan apartment complex near Chennai’s Chola Hotel—vandalizing the premises by smashing the television, tables, chairs, and computers. They even set fire to an effigy of party leader Dr. Krishnasamy.

During the chaos, senior party members, including state high-level committee member Chellaiah and Edwin, were present at the office. The attackers physically assaulted them, forcing them to lock themselves in a bathroom. However, the enraged mob broke through the door, dragged them out, and beat them. Documents, files, and office equipment were thrown around, leaving the space in complete disarray, resembling a battlefield.

As the violence escalated, the protesters gathered outside Krishnasamy’s residence, burning an effigy and vowing to take control of the party office. They claimed ownership over the office’s resources, including air conditioning and furnishings, arguing that they had personally funded them. Several district-level leaders, including South Chennai District Secretary Soundar, North Chennai District Secretary Vadivelu, and Central Chennai District Secretary Buddha Nesan, declared their exit from the party, effectively dissolving the Chennai unit of the Puthiya Tamizhagam Party.

Krishnasamy had been at the office earlier that morning but had to leave the place upon learning of the impending attack. His timely departure likely saved him from direct confrontation, as the protesters were visibly enraged and vocal in their threats against him. The entire incident was largely perceived as a deliberate move by Selvaperunthagai, using his loyalists to stir caste-based tensions by accusing Dr. Krishnasamy of the Puthiya Tamizhagam Party of favoritism and discrimination in leadership appointments.

Dr. Krishnasamy Declared – “Criminals Cannot Be Kept In The Party”

In 2001 Tamilan Express carried a report after the violent attack on the Puthiya Tamizhagam party headquarters in Chennai. It featured Krishnasamy’s statements saying, “Criminals cannot be kept in the party,” and detailed that the incident stemmed from internal party conflicts following the dismissal of Selvaperunthagai. Outraged by his removal, Selvaperunthagai’s staunch supporters, including C.K. Baskaran and Janakiammal, retaliated by vandalizing the Puthiya Tamizhagam office in Alwarpet.

Selvaperunthagai had previously been a key leader in the Ambedkar People’s Front but left after a dispute with Poovai Murthy. After a period of inactivity, he joined the Puthiya Tamizhagam party, where he quickly rose to become the state organizer and developed a close association with Dr. Krishnasamy. His growing influence in Chennai led to tensions with Krishnasamy, eventually resulting in a major fallout that intensified during the Puthiya Tamizhagam conference in Trichy.

Matters escalated further when Selvaperunthagai became entangled in the Spike Pandiyan murder case. He was implicated in the investigation, and was identified as the prime suspect. Allegedly, Selvaperunthagai evaded the police and fled to Bangalore. Authorities tracked his phone calls and intercepted a conversation in which he mentioned returning to Chennai for a temple visit. Based on this lead, police set up a covert operation at a key checkpoint in Chennai, but Selvaperunthagai initially evaded capture. Ultimately, he was apprehended based on a tip from his car driver.

During police questioning at Royapettah Government Hospital, Selvaperunthagai denied any involvement in Pandiyan’s murder. He claimed that Pandiyan was a close friend and that he had no reason to harm him. When asked about the allegation that only he knew the lock number of Pandiyan’s house, Selvaperunthagai responded, “Pandian had many friends who also knew the lock number. Why single me out?”

Regarding the sudden urgency in the investigation, Selvaperunthagai asserted, “I am not a criminal. This is a conspiracy by my rivals.”

Dr. Krishnasamy had called Selvaperunthagai a criminal and his ganga a ‘rowdy’ gang in the interview with Tamilan Express.

Rahul Gandhi Appoints A Rowdy As Head Of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee

Controversially, On 17 February 2024 when K. Selvaperunthagai was appointed by the Congress high command as the President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. His appointment came as a disappointment to many of the Congress leaders in the state. There’s a reason.

During the 2016 Assembly elections, Congress leader D Yashoda, who had previously served as the representative for Sriperumbudur in 1980, 1984, 2001, and 2006, raised concerns about Selvaperunthagai’s candidacy, alleging his support for LTTE. She had alleged that Selvaperunthangai is a staunch supporter of the LTTE and had joined the Congress with the motive of safeguarding his alleged “ill-gotten wealth”.

Selvaperunthagai’s criminal history and his “ill-gotten wealth” has once again become a talking point thanks to BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai. It seems to have started after Selvaperunthagai accused that criminals were enrolling in the BJP. In return, Annamalai accused him of being a history-sheeter during a press meeting after visiting the bereaved family of TN BSP leader Armstrong.

Annamalai refused to retract his words or apologise for his remarksIn fact, he even put out a list of crimes that Selvaperunthagai was allegedly involved in.

Annamalai in his official X account stated, “When I mentioned that Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President Selvaperunthagai was on the list of criminals, Selvaperunthagai said he was very upset since I have insulted him who came in the path of Mahatma Gandhi. Below is the path taken by the one who claims to be a Mahatma Gandhi follower.

  • Auditor Pandian murder case – main culprit
  • Case No. 24(A)/2001 of 2001. CBI Case Prevention of Corruption Act 1988, Section 13(2) r/w 13(1) (e)
  • Case No. 136/2003 IPC 307 of 2003 – Attempt to murder
  • Case No. 138/2003 of 2003 – Assault
  • 2003 Case No. 277/03 – Threat to kill
  • 2003 Case No. 451/2003 IPC 324 – Assault with dangerous weapons, IPC 506 – Threats to kill, Explosives, 1908.
  • It is noteworthy that in this case, he was apprehended under the Goondas Act.
  • 2008 Case No. 1464/2003 IPC 147 – Rioting, IPC 148 – Rioting with deadly weapons, IPC 506 – criminal intimidation

Attempt to murder case, criminal intimidation case, assault with deadly weapons case, rioting with deadly weapons case, explosives case, murder case, and many other cases which are some of the worst crime cases in society. Notably, there were three cases of criminal intimidation (death threats) were filed against him. Apart from this, the Auditor Pandian murder case.”

This led us to a video report from News J that surfaced a few years ago. The report questions the origins of the funds used to establish a college in London. This college is allegedly linked to TNCC President Selvaperunthagai.

Selvaperunthagai’s Endless Political Career For Survival

Selvaperunthagai is said to have begun his political journey with the Puratchi Bharatham (Revolutionary Bharat) Party, and based on the party leader’s recommendation, he was able to secure a position as a peon at the Reserve Bank of India. Over time, Selvaperunthagai transitioned from a humble peon to a millionaire.

His political career, however, has been marred by controversy. Auditor Pandian’s assassination led to suspicions around Selvaperunthagai, resulting in his expulsion from the Puratchi Bharatham Party its leader. Seeking political refuge, he joined Dr Krishnasamy’s Puthiya Tamizhagam Party, only to be dismissed after his identity and past were revealed.

Subsequently, Selvaperunthagai aligned with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), where his activities attracted legal scrutiny. During the AIADMK regime in 2001 and 2006, the Goondas Act was invoked against him due to allegations of amassing wealth illegally.

Despite these setbacks, he managed to secure a position in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, representing Sriperumbudur for the VCK in the 2006 elections. However, he was expelled from the party after allegedly betraying its leadership.

Selvaperunthagai’s political journey did not end there. He joined the Bahujan Samaj Party led by Mayawati, only to be expelled shortly thereafter. Finally, he found a stable position within the Congress Party. He contested elections from Sengam and Sriperumbudur in 2014 and 2016, facing defeat in both attempts. However, he won the Sriperumbudur seat in the 2021 assembly elections, representing the Congress Party.

Selvaperunthagai’s Alleged Criminal Past & Mysterious London College Connections

Interestingly, Selvaperunthagai, in his 2011 election affidavit mentioned that there was no cases or FIRs filed against his name.

However, as of 2016, it is noteworthy that there were lots of cases pending and atleast 3 major cases were live.

Selvaperunthagai’s alleged links to the Buckingham College of London have resurfaced, especially after it was revealed that his wife Umayal Selvam was listed as one of the directors. It is noteworthy that the website containing the details of the college’s directors also states that Umayal resigned in 2012.

It is notable that this allegedly bogus college was dissolved in 2017 and the website states that accounts are still overdue.

Given his humble beginnings as a Reserve Bank peon 30 years ago, the question arises: how did Selvaperunthagai accumulate the wealth necessary to build a college in London?

The Sanitation Vehicle Scam

BJP state president Annamalai accused TNCC chief Selvaperunthagai of orchestrating a massive scam under the guise of empowering sanitation workers. The DMK government awarded ₹524 crore contracts, with cooperative banks disbursing ₹65 lakh loans each to 54 individuals in just a week—without collateral or repayments. Shockingly, loan recipients signed blank cheques upon receiving funds, and their accounts have seen no transactions since. Instead of sanitation workers managing the contracts, operations were handed over to Gengreen Logistics, whose director is Selvaperunthagai’s nephew. The company’s registered office matches Selvaperunthagai’s, exposing blatant corruption and conflict of interest.

Will Congress Act?

It is an absolute disgrace that a position once held by towering statesmen like Rajaji, Sathyamoorthi, Kamarajar, Moopanaar, Kumari Anandan, and Vazhapadi Ramamurthy has now been handed over to a history-sheeter and a known thug by national leadership of Congress. Is Rahul Gandhi so clueless that he failed to see this, or has he shamelessly chosen to empower a man like Selvaperunthagai to lead his party?

Selvaperunthagai’s controversial past, alleged criminal history, and questionable financial dealings continue to raise serious concerns. His rapid rise through multiple political parties, coupled with accusations of violence, corruption, and intimidation, casts a long shadow over his leadership. With renewed calls for his removal, the Tamil Nadu Congress faces mounting pressure to address the allegations against him.

Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai has accused Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) chief Selvaperunthagai of being involved in a strategic scam linked to the sanitation workers’ entrepreneurship scheme in the state. He also raised concerns about whether the ruling DMK is complicit in the alleged scam.

The Tamil Nadu government introduced this initiative following the BJP led Central Governments initiative to enhance the living standards of sanitation workers. As part of the scheme, arrangements were made last year to provide modern sewage vehicles to sanitation workers, enabling them to become entrepreneurs.

Raising concerns over the transparency of the scheme, the Tamil Nadu BJP, through its official X account, called for clarity on the alleged irregularities. BJP state president Annamalai accused TNCC  chief Selvaperunthagai of orchestrating a large-scale scam under the pretense of transforming sanitation workers into entrepreneurs. This has also sparked questions about whether the DMK government is complicit in the matter.

The DMK government had announced a scheme aimed at empowering sanitation workers by turning them into entrepreneurs, awarding contracts worth ₹524 crore over a period of seven years through the Chennai Water Supply Board and the Department of Municipal Administration. Following this, 54 beneficiaries secured loans from the Kanchipuram Central Cooperative Bank and 33 from the Chennai Central Cooperative Bank to purchase modern sewage collection vehicles.

Notably, between 12 August 2024 and 19 August 2024, the Kanchipuram Central Cooperative Bank disbursed loans of ₹65 lakh each to 54 individuals within just a week. Shockingly, on the very day their new bank accounts were opened and cheque books issued, ₹65 lakh was deposited into each account, and the beneficiaries were made to sign two cheques before being sent away. Seven months have passed since the loan disbursement, yet no repayments have been made. Furthermore, no financial transactions have occurred in these accounts since the loans were issued. This raises the critical question, On what basis did cooperative banks approve ₹65 lakh loans for multiple individuals without any collateral?

Doubts also arise regarding whether the loan recipients are actually sanitation workers. Had these loans been sanctioned under the Central Government’s NSFDC or NAMASTE schemes, a thorough verification process would have been conducted to ensure they were legitimate beneficiaries. It appears that cooperative banks were strategically used to bypass these checks.

Adding to the controversy, an agreement was signed in 2023 between Chennai-based Gengreen Logistics & Management Pvt Ltd and the loan recipients on 7 June 2023. As per this agreement, instead of sanitation workers directly handling the ₹524 crore sewage disposal contracts under the Tamil Nadu government, Gengreen Logistics took over the operations. A major red flag is that one of the company’s directors, Veeramani Radhakrishnan, is the nephew of TNCC chief Selvaperuthagai. Additionally, the company’s registered office address is the same as that of Selvaperuthagai’s, raising further suspicions of a conflict of interest.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai, through his official X account, said, “Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Selvaperunthagai has orchestrated a huge scam under the guise of transforming sanitation workers into entrepreneurs. This raises the question of whether the DMK government is also involved. The DMK government had announced plans to empower sanitation workers as entrepreneurs and awarded them contracts worth ₹524 crore over the next seven years to carry out government projects through the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and the Department of Municipal Administration. Following this, 54 beneficiaries received loans from the Kanchipuram Central Cooperative Bank and 33 from the Chennai Central Cooperative Bank to purchase modern sewage collection vehicles. Notably, between 12 August 2024, and 19 August 2024, loans worth of ₹65 lakh were granted to 54 individuals within a single week by the Kanchipuram Central Cooperative Bank. On the very day new bank accounts were opened and cheque books issued, ₹65 lakh was deposited into each account, and the beneficiaries were sent away after getting signatures on two cheques. It has now been seven months since the loan disbursement, yet not a single rupee has been repaid. Furthermore, no financial transactions have taken place in these accounts since the loan was issued. On what basis did the cooperative banks approve ₹65 lakh loans for so many individuals without any collateral?”

Adding further, Annamalai said “There is uncertainty about whether the loan recipients are actually sanitation workers. If the loans had been granted through the central government’s NSFDC or NAMASTE schemes, they would have verified whether they were genuine beneficiaries. It appears that, to bypass this, they have taken loans from cooperative banks. An agreement was signed in 2023 between Gengreen Logistics & Management Pvt Ltd, a Chennai-based company, and the beneficiaries who received bank loans on 7 June 2023. As per this agreement, instead of the sanitation workers carrying out the sewage disposal contracts worth ₹524 crore under the Tamil Nadu government, Gengreen Logistics would take over the work. One of the company’s directors, Veeramani Radhakrishnan, is the nephew of Selvaperuthagai. The company’s registered office address is the same office address as that of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Selvaperuthagai. Did the DMK government truly not know that a scheme meant for the rehabilitation and empowerment of sanitation workers was being misused to purchase vehicles for a proxy company linked to Selvaperuthagai? How can accept that a program intended to uplift the poor and needy has been diverted for their personal gain by hitting on the stomachs of poor and the needy?”

Social media has erupted in heated discussions after a group of unidentified individuals, disguised as sanitation workers, unlawfully entered the residence of YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar on 24 March 2025.

In response, authorities deployed police officers to prevent further escalation.

Shankar accused Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President Selvaperunthagai of orchestrating the attack, claiming that his loyal supporter, V. Vanishree Vijayakumar, led the assault. Following these allegations, netizens launched an online campaign demanding her arrest for allegedly threatening a journalist and attempting an attack on his home.

Social media posts by V. Vanishree Vijayakumar suggested that the incident was premeditated, as she appeared to have planned the act in advance. Evidence from her now-deleted Facebook posts indicated that she was live-streaming the event, further reinforcing suspicions about her intent.

Even Vanishree was confronted by a police officer, who questioned her actions, stating that she had only been granted permission for a protest, yet she and her group had unlawfully entered and attacked the house. The officer confronted her, saying, We have warned you multiple times to send them away and come with two others. Now, what is the point after ransacking the house there, and coming here to shout?” In response, another woman defended their actions, saying, “No one damaged the house.” The officer immediately countered, “Then? he destroyed it himself?” She casually replied, “Yes, sir.” The officer pressed further, “Is it? That elderly woman?”

Vanishree’s social media post showcased her close ties with the Congress party and firm support for TNCC Chief Selvaperunthagai. Following this revelation, netizens voiced their outrage and demanded her arrest.

A gang of unknown individuals, disguised as sanitation workers, unlawfully entered the residence of YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar on 24 March 2025. They ransacked his home, terrorized his mother, and smeared filth across the rooms and dining table.

According to police sources, the intruders were allegedly angered by remarks Shankar made in one of his YouTube videos, which they found offensive toward sanitation workers. Shankar later shared details of the incident on social media, posting screenshots of a video call made by one of the trespassers using his mother’s phone. In response, police were deployed to prevent any further disturbances.

Speaking to the media, ‘Savukku’ Shankar recounted the attack, stating that while he was on his way to the office at 9:30 AM, stones were thrown at his vehicle. Meanwhile, a group of individuals forcibly broke into his house while he was on a phone call with his mother to alert her. They allegedly attacked him upon entry. He immediately contacted the police control room and filed a complaint. According to Shankar, the intruders also took his mother’s phone and used it to make a video call to him.

Shankar reiterated his past allegations of corruption involving Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President Selvaperunthagai. He claimed that in December of the previous year, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had allocated 230 sewage treatment vehicles to sanitation workers, supported by both Central and State government funds. However, only 87 vehicles reportedly reached genuine beneficiaries, while the rest were allegedly controlled by proxies linked to Selvaperunthagai. According to Shankar, Selvaperunthagai had misused funds from Metro Water contracts, investing them in a private company while only paying sanitation workers ₹20,000 per month and keeping the remaining amount for himself. He asserted that he had presented evidence of this corruption in one of his videos.

He said, “There has been a huge scam in the purchase of vehicles for sanitation workers. The sanitation workers have been cheated. I spoke in support of them, highlighting that the money rightfully meant for them is been deceived by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President Selvaperunthagai in order to exploit their earnings. Of course, I have never spoken against sanitation workers anywhere.”

He later said, “Congress Committee President Selvaperunthagai and Ravikumar Narayanan have conspired to cheat sanitation workers by registering around 230 vehicles under the names of people associated with Selvaperunthagai and siphoning off the money. I have that he personally signs contracts with a company for all these vehicles, deceiving the sanitation workers. That is what I was pointing out. I was only advocating for real sanitation workers to receive the benefits they deserve. I did not say anything against them or in a derogatory manner.”

Shankar accused Congress leader Selvaperunthagai and the Chennai police of orchestrating the attack. He also pointed out that his current residence was a well-kept secret, as he had moved there only three months ago after his previous home in Maduravoyal was sealed. No one, except the police, knows the address. He alleged that law enforcement officials had leaked his location to facilitate the attack.

Further, Shankar accused the Chennai Police of hastily closing an investigation to shield an ‘influential individual’ from being implicated in the Armstrong murder case. He claimed that the DMK government was attempting to silence him and his media outlet, Savukku Media, by issuing threats and trying to shut them down.

Shankar described the attack as a direct intimidation tactic meant to force him to cease his work. He stated that threats to shut down Savukku Media had been ongoing for a long time, but this incident felt like a final warning. “They barged into my house, threw waste on the dining table and bedrooms—this is a message telling me to stop my media operations,” he said.

He condemned the incident as an example of the extreme measures the government was willing to take to suppress dissent. He equated this instance to a death threat, stating, “For so long, I have been threatened with false legal cases. Today, my mother’s life, my life, and the lives of those with me are in danger. I see this as a direct death threat to me. If you dump feces in the living house, how can you live in here? What could be a more extreme attack than this? Think about it. They have thrown feces and left it on the dining table. How will you live in here? They have broken the back door of the house. Now, where will I stay tonight? I see this as a threat that suggests you should not live at all.”

Additionally, he claimed that images obtained during a police investigation were being misused to create defamatory posters against him. Despite the threats, Shankar vowed to file a formal complaint regarding the attack on his home and continue exposing corruption
