In a startling decision, the DMK-led government in Tamil Nadu, under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has announced plans to host the World Muthamizh Murugan Conference at the revered Palani Murugan Temple in Dindigul district. The conference, scheduled for June or July 2024, aims to bring together “devotees of Lord Murugan” from across the globe.

The announcement was made by DMK Hindu Religious Charities Minister P.K. Sekar Babu during a press briefing in Chennai. Speaking to reporters, he said, “To bring together all the Murugan devotees from across the world for Tamil God Murugan, we will hold a World Murugan Conference in Palani. We are a government that says what it does and does what it says.”

The two-day conference will witness the participation of trustees from Murugan temples worldwide, highlighting the global reverence for Lord Murugan, known as the Tamil God. Discussions, seminars, and lectures on various aspects of Murugan worship and mythology are being planned.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is slated to inaugurate the conference, with further details regarding the event’s date to be announced soon. The announcement comes on the heels of the formation of the Hindu Religious Charities Advisory Board, aimed at facilitating the implementation of key initiatives for temple workers’ welfare.

Critics argue that this can be seen as a way to drive a wedge among Hindus by classifying them as Murugan devotees and those who are not and thus furthering the “North-South divide” narrative.

Dravidian Stockist and alleged ‘spiritual discourser’ Suki Sivam including DMK members have said that Muruga and Subrahmanya are distinct, perpetuating a recycled narrative of Aryan and Dravidian divisions.

Ironically, Dravidian Stockists and “Periyar”ists named “Karuppar Koottam” with ties to the DMK had earlier abused Lord Murugan and the revered hymn Kandha Sashti Kavasam.

It is noteworthy that the same DMK minister Sekar Babu had participated in the Eradicate Sanatana Dharma conference in September 2023 where Udhayanidhi Stalin made those controversial remarks. His words at the press briefing that the DMK government under MK Stalin “says what it does and does what it says” seem to indicate this – deepen the narrative of the Aryans and Dravidians by calling Lord Muruga a Tamizh Kadavul (Tamizh God) and by inviting people who are specifically “Murugan devotees”.

Critics wonder if this is one of their ways to deHinduize Lord Murugan and thus work towards Udhayanidhi Stalin’s statements.

Kanchipuram renowned as the temple city is home to various sacred shrines and architectural marvels, and Kanchi Kachabeshwarar Temple is one such significant site. In this temple, during the month of Karthikai, a lamp pooja is traditionally performed that is believed to cure various diseases and ailments, draws tens of thousands of devotees.

The Kachabeshwarar temple in Kanchipuram boasts a history of 1600 years and is currently undergoing renovation for consecration ceremony. Unique trees within the temple premises, such as the Nagalingam tree, Chara kondrai tree, Vanni tree, Mango tree, Neem tree, and the Vilva tree are linked to a 200-year-old royal tradition used for Shiva worship.

In Kanchi Puranam it is said that “அக்காஞ்சியில் நீங்காது அமர்ந்திடும் கொன்றைவார் சடையனைக் கச்சபேசன் தனைக் கும்பிடச் சென்றவர் கண்டவர் கருதினர் யாவரும் தீது தீர்ந்து ஒன்றி ஒன்றா நிலை மாறிலா முத்தி பெற்றுய்வரே”
(Legend says that on that day when one bowed down to the slayer of the slayer seated in Kanchi (Kachabesan), one would receive an eternal blessing)

However, a significant concern has arisen among devotees, alleging that Natarajan, an executive officer of the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE) has indiscriminately cut down trees in this revered temple and said the trees would be utilized in the Yagasalai (ceremonial fire pit) set up for the Kudamuzhakku (Consecration) ceremony.

This caused widespread dismay among the devotees, and philanthropists which drew sharp criticism directed towards the authorities responsible for the decision, particularly in light of the considerable financial investment made by those who constructed the expansive yagasalai. Questions also arose about the availability of funds for such a grand endeavor while lacking the resources to procure firewood for the ceremonial fire pit (Gundam). Devotees are calling on the HR&CE to reconsider the decision and either preserve the sanctity of the temple or provide a valid rationale for the tree removal.

In response to this situation, Hindu Munani state spokesperson Ilangovan issued a statement of condemnation regarding the issue and various social activists from Kanchipuram submitted a petition during the People’s Grievance Day meeting at the Collectorate in Kanchipuram. The petition calls for action against officials of the HR&CE department who allegedly acted in violation of government rules and requested the issuance of a circular by the department to prevent such incidents in any temple.

Hindu State President Munnani Kaadeshwara Subramaniam has demanded Tamil Nadu HR&CE Minister PK Sekarbabu to publish a white paper with supporting data for his assertion that the DMK government has recovered 1000 acres of encroached temple land worth ₹3943 crores.

While speaking at an event laying the foundation stone for reconstruction of the dilapidated Chozha era Mangala Lakshmi Azhaguraja Perumal temple at Thakkolam, next to Arakkonam in Ranipet district, Minister Sekarbabu said that 1000 acres of temple property worth ₹3943 crores have been recovered from the encroachers.

With regards to this claim, Hindu Munnani state president Kadeshwara Subramaniam has questioned the authenticity of the claim of the DMK minister.

In a press release dated 24 January 2023, the Hindu Munnani President stated,”DMK Minister Sekarbabu has developed a habit of stating that ‘so much land has been recovered’ each time he gives a press conference. People are sceptic of his claim of recovery since during a press conference with Chennai Mayor Priya, he instructed Mayor Priya to tell whatever number comes to her mind as data (‘Summa Adichu Vidu’). People in Tamil Nadu have suspicions that he is behaving similarly here.”

The press release added,”Therefore, the Hindu Munnani has been insisting that DMK minister Sekarbabu should issue a white paper on behalf of the HR&CE department regarding all the agricultural lands, buildings, shops, halls, water bodies and other immovable and movable properties that have been recovered from the occupation so far.”

It futher said,”Through this, people are likely to have confidence in the reports and publications issued by the HR&CE department. Therefore, the Hindu Munnani insists that the Tamil Nadu government should release the White Paper without any further delay.”
