Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader H Raja launched a scathing attack on the Tamil Nadu government’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, accusing it of being “anti-Hindu” and looting temple funds. His remarks came during a media interaction in Karaikudi, Sivaganga district.

In a sharp and sarcastic critique aimed at HR&CE Minister PK Sekar Babu, Raja questioned the minister’s stance on temple administration. “Call him Sekarbabu or Hallelujah Babu, whatever you wish. But under his management, is the HR&CE Department filing affidavits opposing the lighting of lamps in temples?” Raja asked, highlighting what he termed as the department’s contradictory actions.

He escalated his criticism, labelling the HR&CE a “totally anti-Hindu, evil department” that should be abolished. Raja alleged systematic corruption, stating, “Lakhs and crores of rupees are being looted in the name of temple kumbabishekam (consecration ceremonies) as long as this department exists.”

The BJP leader accused the DMK government of siphoning temple offerings, mismanaging temple lands, and rendering the department redundant. “What is the need for such a department? If you ask what is important for a temple, it is the pooja (worship). But I have seen appointment orders for priests that state ‘you will not receive a salary’,” Raja claimed, citing an example from a temple in Maduranthakam. He contrasted this with what he alleged were high administrative overheads: “Joint Commissioners get salaries of two lakh rupees a month while temples survive on the offerings of devotees.”

“This is a government that thrives by siphoning the offerings made by Hindus to their temples. If a government acts against Hindu temples, isn’t it our duty to remove it?” he asserted..

Statewide protests led by the Hindu Munnani on 7 December 2025 displayed the intensified public anger over the Tamil Nadu government’s refusal to permit lighting the Deepam at the Thirupparankundram hilltop, with demonstrators in multiple districts targeting HR&CE Minister PK Sekar Babu for his remarks on the controversy.

Protests were held across Tamil Nadu after the organisation accused the government of defying consecutive High Court orders and denying Hindus their customary right to light the lamp at the Deepathoon. Crowds gathered in several districts, raising slogans against the DMK administration and alleging political interference in temple practices. Videos circulated widely on social media showed demonstrators throwing slippers at the minister’s poster, reflecting growing discontent among Hindu groups over the state’s handling of the issue.

This was especially seen in Tirunelveli district, in front of the DMK office there. Slogans were raised, his poster/photos were slippered.

Over 120 students at the Arulmigu Kanchi Ekambaranathar Higher Secondary School in Kilpauk, Chennai, were reportedly made to wait in the sun for over two hours ahead of a scheduled visit by Tamil Nadu HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu on Tuesday, 29 July 2025.

The students had gathered for a government-sponsored event to distribute bicycles, which was originally announced for 8:45 AM Minister Sekar Babu, however, arrived nearly two hours late after attending multiple other engagements, including the “Annakaramangal Athunnu” program linked to the Chief Minister’s birthday and a temple inspection at the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore.

According to reports, the delay was further extended by the late arrival of the District Secretary, Chitrarasu, which pushed the event even further.

Eyewitnesses said students were made to stand on either side of the school campus awaiting the minister’s arrival. The lack of basic facilities such as seating or shade led to concerns over the students’ welfare amid the rising morning heat.

When questioned about the delay, Minister Sekar Babu told reporters that he had informed the organisers that he would be arriving only by 10:30 AM. He added that teachers had made the students wait ahead of time and that he had asked them to seat the students in the shade upon arrival. The minister also issued an apology, stating that he regretted any inconvenience caused to the students.

The school, which operates under the administration of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, hosted the event as part of a broader scheme to distribute bicycles to schoolchildren across the state.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a series of major changes at the Annamalaiyar (Arunachaleswarar) Temple in Tiruvannamalai, including a hike in darshan and abhishekam fees, improved facilities for pilgrims, and a long-term ₹200 crore development plan to be rolled out over the next two decades.

Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P.K. Sekarbabu, speaking to reporters after a high-level consultative meeting held at the Tiruvannamalai Collector’s Office, confirmed that the fee for special darshan tickets will be increased from ₹50 to ₹100. The abhishekam fee is also set to be doubled from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000.

Sekarbabu stated that the number of devotees visiting the temple has been steadily rising, particularly on full moon days, necessitating infrastructural upgrades and better crowd management. He said new works and projects will be initiated with administrative approval to improve the devotee experience.

Break Darshan, Loudspeaker Alerts, and LED Screens

Among the upcoming measures are the introduction of a “Break Darshan” system to regulate and extend darshan timings based on crowd density. To aid foreign devotees and pilgrims from other states, real-time announcements during abhishekam and peak hours will be made via sound and light systems.

Additionally, LED display screens will be installed around the Mada Streets and key temple areas to broadcast live visuals of ongoing temple rituals. Plans are also underway to construct a new pilgrims’ guesthouse to alleviate high lodging costs faced by devotees.

₹200 Crore Vision Plan and New Appointments

A comprehensive ₹200 crore masterplan for temple development is being prepared with a 20-year vision, officials said. Minister Sekarbabu stated that work will begin by the end of this year. A board of trustees for the temple will be appointed as per High Court guidelines. However, he clarified that the ongoing absence of a board will not delay project execution.

To improve coordination for out-of-state and foreign pilgrims, a Public Relations Officer (PRO) will soon be appointed for the Annamalaiyar Temple. The minister also stressed the need for equal treatment of local and foreign devotees during darshan and said arrangements would be made to ensure a smooth experience for all.

Possible Mobile Phone Ban Under Consideration

The state government is also actively considering a ban on mobile phones within temple premises, Sekarbabu said, adding that a final decision on this will be taken soon after further consultation.

The review meeting was chaired by Public Works Minister E.V. Velu and attended by Additional Chief Secretary Manivasan, Endowments Commissioner Sridhar, Collector Dharbagaraj, and several senior officials.

In a move raising serious concerns about transparency and consent, the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has melted over 1,000 kg of gold articles offered by devotees to 21 temples across the state.

The gold, deemed “unused” by the department, was sent to the government mint in Mumbai, converted into 24-carat bars, and deposited in the State Bank of India under the Gold Investment Scheme. According to a policy note tabled in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by Minister P.K. Sekar Babu, this investment is now generating ₹17.81 crore annually in interest, which the department claims is being used for temple development.

As of 31 March 2025, a total of 10,74,123.488 grams of gold had been melted. The Arulmigu Mariamman Temple in Samayapuram, Tiruchirappalli, alone accounted for over 424 kg — the single largest contribution to the scheme. The interest earned from the scheme is reportedly being used for the development of the participating temples.

Three regional committees headed by retired justices have been formed to oversee the implementation of the scheme.

The government has also approved a similar plan for unused and unusable silver items in temples. These will be melted into pure silver bars by government-approved private smelting companies, within temple premises and under the supervision of zonal committees. The process is currently underway.

The move has sparked unease among traditionalists and devotees, many of whom consider these offerings as sacred gifts made in faith — not financial assets to be liquidated and invested. The decision to melt them en masse raises serious questions about religious autonomy, public trust, and the broader role of the state in managing temple wealth.

Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagenthiran and BJP leader K Annamalai have sharply criticized DMK Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE), P.K. Sekar Babu, for styling the memorial of late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi to resemble a temple tower (gopuram). The design choice has triggered widespread backlash, with many condemning it as a deliberate affront to Hindu religious sentiments.

Nainar Nagenthiran condemned the actions of DMK Minister Sekar Babu and demanded a public apology, stating, “The act of the @arivalayam government which has painted the image of the Srivilliputhur temple tower—an iconic symbol of Tamil Nadu—on the memorial of the late Mr. Karunanidhi is highly condemnable. Is it not enough for the DMK government has so far disrespected Hindu beliefs enough by saying, ‘Don’t keep bindi, erasing holy ash, and insulting names? Must the sanctity of Hindu temples also be tarnished by painting temple towers onto a grave? Furthermore, @PKSekarbabu, who is the Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, must issue an immediate public apology for acting with such a mindset that deeply hurts the sentiments of Hindus. I also urge Chief Minister @mkstalin to promptly order the removal of this objectionable decoration.”

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai slammed the move, accusing Sekar Babu and other DMK ministers of trying to outdo each other in showing who is the best slaves to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s family. In a statement shared on his official X account, Annamalai did not hold back, “In a bid among DMK ministers to prove who is the best ‘slave’ to the Chief Minister’s family, Minister Sekar Babu is acting has crossed all limits in a business competition by designing the memorial of the late DMK leader Karunanidhi to resemble a temple tower. The DMK, despite claiming to be atheists, have long made it their business to hurt the beliefs of Hindus. There is a limit to public patience. Minister Sekar Babu should stop misusing the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department for his business competition. If he holds such deep admiration for his late leader, then Minister Shekar babu should keep his (Karunanidhi) photo in his home’s puja room and worship him. If he continues the act and insult the Hindu belief under the guise of atheism, the people will deliver a fitting lesson to him.”

A metaphor used by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P. K. Sekar Babu during a legislative discussion has sparked sharp reactions from the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Speaking during the Finance Committee meeting on budget allocations for the Department of Social Welfare and Differently Abled Persons, Sekar Babu likened Sanatana Dharma to the peel of a banana.

“The peel is Sanatanam; the fruit inside is the Lord,” he said. “Just as we discard the peel to eat the fruit, one must go beyond Sanatanam to truly realize God.”

His analogy immediately drew criticism from AIADMK MLA K.P. Munusamy, who dismissed the minister’s parable as flawed.

“There is a vast difference between Sanatanam and a banana peel,” Munusamy countered. “If Sanatana and God are truly one and the same, there would be no need for such heated debates or legal battles.”

The debate grew more animated when DMK MLA Musiri Thiyagarajan added a political dimension to the discussion, referencing past controversies, “Udhayanidi is the 10-headed Ravana who came to destroy Sanatanam,” he said, alluding to the ‘eradicate Sanatana Dharma’ remarks made by the DMK scion in September 2023 which drew huge backlash from across the country.

Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has strongly criticized the ruling DMK government, accusing it of pressuring citizens to conceal its administrative failures. He pointed out the stark contrast between the initial statements given by the deceased victim’s family—who blamed the government for the lack of medical facilities at the temple—and the later remarks by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Minister P.K. Sekar Babu at the backdrop of stampede incident at the Tiruchendur temple. The minister dismissed concerns about the temple’s infrastructure, claiming that the death was due to the victim’s pre-existing medical condition. He also presented a letter allegedly written by the victim’s family, which seemed to contradict their earlier claims.

Annamalai alleged that the DMK government had coerced the victim’s family into writing the letter in order to secure the release of the body of Om Kumar, who lost his life in the stampede at the Tiruchendur temple. He further demanded that the government provide immediate financial assistance of ₹10 lakh to the bereaved family and take necessary steps to prevent such tragedies in temples in the future.

Sharing his views on his official X account, Annamalai stated, “I have read the letter that Minister Sekar Babu claimed was written by the wife of Mr. Om Kumar from Karaikudi, who tragically lost his life in a stampede at the Tiruchendur temple.  I have highlighted certain lines in that letter. It seems to be a letter written under the name of persuasion implying that the body of the deceased would only be released if such a letter was submitted. I also saw the interview given by late Om Kumar’s family to @PTTVOnlineNews yesterday.  What a clear contradiction between the contents of the letter and their statements to the media. Minister Sekar Babu, who devalues public lives to cover up his regime’s incompetence, should remember that while a king may delay justice, divine justice strikes at last. I urge the DMK government to immediately provide ₹10 lakh in compensation to Om Kumar’s family, who died in the stampede and take necessary measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in temples in the future.”

In his statement, Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Annamalai attached a letter purportedly written by the wife of the deceased, Om Kumar. He pointed out a noticeable inconsistency in the letter, where it was repeatedly stated—around four times—that the deceased had breathing issues and was undergoing medication. Annamalai found this repetition unusual and questionable.

In an interview given to the private media channel, the victim of the deceased said, “We went to Tiruchendur to worship. We all came after worshipping in the front row. My uncle came after behind us, suddenly suffocated and died there. The reason for that is the crowd was huge, he fell down and died. They called us and said that, ‘he had fainted and asked us to come’. On the way, when we were going, they called us back and said, ‘He died.’ We don’t know what happened. But the people who came and told us said, ‘It took half an hour to come out of the temple. They said that the ambulance arrived after half an hour. But the police told us that they came and took him away in ten minutes. He had a pulse. He was fine.”

Other relatives intervened and said, “We didn’t get any medical help there.” Then she continued, “They said that four medical college students gave him first aid. We heard that there is no medical facility in Tiruchendur. If there was, our uncle would have been there. No, no, it’s been over half an hour. Do you know what Charities Minister says? He came here already unwell, that’s why he died like that. How can he say that? He was fine. We have a video. We have proof for everything. We have proof for everything. We took a photo. We had my child’s head tonsured and pierced his ear. How could he die who took photos with us there? then it is because of the inadequate facilities, right?”

The victim’s family, in tears, revealed that the letter was written by a relative under police instruction, as they were desperate to receive the deceased’s body for a dignified funeral ritual.

The Hindu Munnani has strongly criticized DMK’s Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Sekar Babu, for failing to take action regarding the damaged sacred flagpole at the Agastheeswarar Temple in Villivakkam. The flagpole, which is an important part of the temple, has been broken, and the temple administration has been using ropes to keep it upright.

The Agastheeswarar Temple, over a thousand years old, is rich in history and legend, with many believing it was constructed by the Cholas, possibly under the reign of Kulothunga Chola. Originally named Vilvavanam, meaning “forest of Vilvam trees,” the area later became known as Villivakkam. The sacred Vilvam tree, believed to possess both medicinal and spiritual significance, is integral to the temple. Tradition holds that Sage Agasthya himself planted the tree here, and it remains sacred, with its leaves used in daily puja rituals by the priests.

The temple venerates Lord Shiva as Agastheeswarar Swamy and the Divine Mother Shakti as Swarnambikai. According to legend, during the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at Mount Kailas, Sage Agasthya was in the south performing Shiva Puja at this temple. As he worshiped here, he became honored as Agastheeswarar. Goddess Parvati, adorned with golden ornaments during the celestial marriage, is honored here as Swarnambikai.

However, the failure to repair the temple’s damaged flagpole in the past six months has left devotees disappointed. The Agastheeswarar Temple in Villivakkam, which is managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, is currently undergoing the construction of a new five-tiered Rajagopuram at a cost of 2.15 crore.

The flagpole, which was damaged during the last Aadi month festival, has been tied with rope at the base but has not been properly repaired. Devotees have expressed dissatisfaction that the flagpole has been neglected while the construction of the costly new gopuram continues.

Villivakkam residents have raised concerns, noting that the flagpole is a significant symbol not only for the Agastheeswarar Temple but for all temples. Devotees typically offer prayers under the flagpole before proceeding to the Artha Mandapam and Maha Mandapam to reach the sanctum. The delay in repairing the flagpole, which has now remained damaged for six months, is causing frustration among the community.

In response, the temple administration acknowledged the damage and explained that steps have been taken to repair it. A letter seeking approval for the repairs was sent to the Commissioner of HR&CE a month ago, after consulting experts and relevant officials. The repair work will commence once the necessary permissions are granted.

The Hindu Munnani has sharply criticized the officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department and DMK Minister Sekar Babu, via their official X account that, “In Villivakkam, the famous Agatheeswarar temple flagpole, which is under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, was damaged six months ago. As a result, the lower part of the flagpole has been tied with rope. The flagpole is very important in Hindu temples. Even if the officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, who have become a gang of robbers, do not understand this, it is very painful that Minister Sekar Babu, who brags about protecting the temple property and spirituality, does not understand this either. Like the saying, ‘Does a crow know about the disease of an ox?’, “Does the anti-Hindu Dravidian government’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department understand the sanctity of the temple??” Minister Sekar Babu should show at least a little interest in protecting the temple, as he is involved in various types of extortion in name of fee from devotees and gold smelting during festivals. Otherwise, the people will not forgive him in the coming elections, and Mahesan will not forgive him in the final days.”

Back at his best in giving it back to the Dravidianist ministers, Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party National Convener H Raja lambasted DMK Minister Sekar Babu as a “shameless, anti-Hindu looter,” slamming his dismissive remarks about devotees’ suffering at Tiruchendur temple and accusing the DMK regime of being an “evil, anti-Hindu force” unfit to govern.

Lashing out at HR&CE minister Sekar Babu over his behaviour and comments on the devotees at the Thiruchendur Murugan temple, speaking to reporters he said, “In the DMK regime, see how the words are changing. You cannot call a drunkard for who he is – the minister will get angry. This is a regime led by cheap and bad beings. If this regime is not thrown out in 2026, no one can save Tamil Nadu. DMK is today’s evil force. They are anti-Hindu as well. There is a man called Sekar Babu, he is in fact “Alloliya” Babu (indicating he is Christian), a crypto, an irresponsible, egoistic, barbaric HR&CE minister. He goes to Thiruchendur. There, the devotees were literally packed like in a box in the path toward the temple. They had been standing in the queue for 6 hours, children didn’t have access to milk, or water. In such a situation, people were raising their voices to bring this to the minister’s attention. A normal respectable person, he need not even be a minister, his behavior proved that he is unfit for that post – he could have asked them what difficulty they were facing and said that he could get the authorities to take care of it – he could have spoken like that. That egoistic person said, “They stand in Tirupati for 24 hours” – what kind of language is that? Are you not ashamed? Why are you even a minister? You better resign and leave. It is a black mark if you enter a temple. You are not respecting the deity there. The devotees were standing in the queue, and you are also present there, you could have at least said you will make the necessary arrangements, you don’t even have to do anything, just a few words that will pacify the people – could you not say that? But what did this shameless, egoistic Sekar Babu say? “They go to Tirupati and stand for 24 hours”.

He further continued, “I ask my friend Shiv Nadar who has donated 300 crores to the Thiruchendur temple. You are not able to arrange for water facilities for the devotees, why are you even a minister? You are unfit for it! Sekar Babu is an anti-Hindu and there is no bigger temple looter than him. If this shameless gang is not removed from the state, there is no redemption for Tamil Nadu. So, in 2026, this Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, this evil force, anti-Hindu force, we have to chase them out of power.”

On 18 January 2025, a viral video featuring DMK Minister PK Sekar Babu drew public attention after he commented on devotees waiting in long queues at the Tiruchendur temple, saying, “They go to Tirupati and wait for 24 hours in queue, but that won’t count.” The comment followed complaints from devotees enduring crowded conditions, lack of drinking water, and inadequate facilities, with some reporting children fainting. The minister was visiting the temple to inspect ongoing sea erosion, which had caused significant damage to the beach area.
