The Congress-Left ecosystem has come to buttress the jibes against Brahmins made by US President Donald Trump’s trade adviser Peter Navarro, who accused India of acting as a “laundromat for the Kremlin” and alleged that “Brahmins” were profiteering from discounted Russian oil.

The coterie of urban naxal Indians who justified his comments include Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs Sagarika Ghose and Saket Gokhale, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, and Sridhar Ramaswamy, All India Congress Committee (AICC) National Coordinator for Social Media and Digital Platforms.

What Did Peter Navarro Say?

Navarro, in an interview with Fox News, charged that Indian refiners were buying Russian crude at a discount, processing it, and exporting it to Europe, Africa and Asia. “India is nothing but a laundromat for the Kremlin…You got Brahmins profiteering at the expense of the Indian people. We need that to stop,” he said, claiming the practice was sustaining Russia’s war machine in Ukraine.

The remarks triggered a political and social media storm in India, with many objecting to Navarro’s use of the term “Brahmins.”

Justification And Buttressing By Brown Sepoys

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram wrote, ““Boston Brahmins” is a term used to describe the elite of society in common parlance.”

Responding to the controversy, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose wrote on X that Navarro’s language was being misinterpreted. “‘Boston Brahmin’ was once a widely used term in the US to refer to the American New England wealthy elite. ‘Brahmin’ is still a term used in the English-speaking world to denote social or economic ‘elites’ (in this case the rich). The illiteracy on X is astonishing,” she said.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale wrote, Classic case of ignorance (and I don’t mean Navarro) Peter Navarro is from Cambridge, MA. In New England (esp Boston & around where he’s from), the term “Brahmin” is used for someone that’s extremely rich BJP “ecosystem” spokespersons should start reading some real books”

He even shared “proof” justifying his statement.

Then once again came the Congress guy – Sridhar Ramaswamy, All India Congress Committee (AICC) National Coordinator for Social Media and Digital Platforms, who wrote, “Many jokers on X having a meltdown over the reference to ‘Boston Brahmins’ which is a commonly used term for elites in America nothing to do with attacking the caste here. Though the initial origin of the term was coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. in his 1861 novel Elsie Venner, he used the analogy of the highest caste in India to describe Boston’s elite families, highlighting their perceived intellectualism and inherited status.”

Navarro, who also called India “the Maharaja of tariffs,” defended the Trump administration’s 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports. He further questioned India’s engagement with Russia and China, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a great leader” but criticising him for “getting into bed with [Vladimir] Putin and Xi Jinping.”

The remarks coincided with Modi’s visit to Tianjin, China, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping and was expected to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Selective outrage appears to be at play as women MPs from the Trinamool Congress, known for promoting themselves as champions of feminism, remain conspicuously silent about the recent rape and murder of a young doctor at a Kolkata hospital. Using carefully chosen language from their party’s lexicon, they seem to be downplaying the severity of the incident.

Netizens questioning their lack of concern are reportedly being blocked on social media. Supporters of the broader I.N.D.I alliance are also accused of minimising the situation. They are using “allegedly” to describe the crime, despite the post-mortem report confirming it.

What happened in Kolkata

On 9 August 2024, the lifeless and partially unclothed body of a female medical intern was discovered in the lecture hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a government-operated institution, in Kolkata. Her father alleged that she had been sexually assaulted and murdered within the hospital. He said there were attempts to hide the truth.

On the night of the incident, the doctor had a late-night meal with four colleagues at 2:30 am after watching Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw event at the Paris Olympics. Subsequently, she went to the lecture hall to unwind.

The primary suspect, Sanjay Roy, had unrestricted access to all hospital sections since he worked at the hospital police outpost. Though he was not associated with the institution, he frequented the premises. Surveillance footage captured his entry into the area where the doctor’s body was found, leading to his arrest on the 10th of August. After the dreadful deed, Roy returned home and slept in. He also cleaned his clothes to eliminate any evidence, with the police discovering his bloodstained shoes during a search.

Post-Mortem Report

The post-mortem report revealed that the doctor had been subjected to brutal torture before being asphyxiated. The report, spanning four pages, indicated that she was strangled, resulting in severe injuries in her private regions.

Moreover, the doctor’s thyroid cartilage was fractured. Sources indicated that the assault occurred, along with the rape, most likely between 3 and 5 am on 9 August 2024. Her lips, fingers, left leg, and abdomen bore marks of injuries. It was reported that the doctor’s head was slammed against a wall or floor, causing extensive injuries, and her airflow was obstructed by closing her mouth and nose to prevent vocalization.

Allegations were made that the accused physically assaulted her when she resisted. Subsequently, he carried out the assault, leading to her demise. As per the autopsy findings, the doctor had cuts on her hands and face. The impact of a severe blow caused the fragments of her broken spectacles to enter her eyes. The initial post-mortem report ruled out suicide, confirming that the trainee doctor was sexually violated before being killed.

Calcutta HC criticises WB Govt

On the 13th of August, the Calcutta High Court criticized the West Bengal government for trying to shield the principal of the Hospital. On the same day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of the doctor’s rape and murder.

NHRC issued directives to the director general of police (DGP) and chief secretary of West Bengal, seeking a comprehensive report within a fortnight. It said the report should detail the progress of the police probe, actions against the perpetrators, specifics of compensation, and steps implemented to prevent similar occurrences.

TMC Women MPs Cherry-Pick Outrage

WB BJP’s co-in charge and head of National Information & Technology Dept Amit Malavya slammed the TMC MP’s selective words of condolences. He pointed out Sagarika Ghose, Rajya Sabha MP, Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra and Jadavpur TMC MP Saayoni Ghosh for not identifying the crime as rape and murder.

In this context, Amit Malavya, the BJP’s National IT cell head and Co-incharge for West Bengal, criticized the TMC MPs for their selective expressions of sympathy over this rape and murder.

He stated, “The obnoxiously shrill women MPs of the TMC couldn’t muster the courage to use the words rape and murder.” Malavya shared posts of Sagarika Ghose, Rajya Sabha MP, Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra, and Jadavpur TMC MP Saayoni Ghosh for their reticence.

Jadavpur TMC MP Saayoni Ghosh stated, “The RG Kar tragedy is shocking. No matter who investigates, the culprits behind this horrific act should face the highest degree of punishment. I hope that the CBI’s dismal conviction rate & the staggering pace of the court doesn’t end up defeating justice one deserves.”

She also praised Mamata Banerjee’s administration for advancing women’s rights over the past 11 years.

11 years ago, Smt. @MamataOfficial  envisioned a Bengal where every girl could pursue her dreams without financial barriers. A dream where no girl would be forced to drop out of school for marriage due to financial constraints. Today, that dream is a reality. #KanyashreeDibas @MamataOfficial.”

Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra adopted a similar approach. She choose her words carefully, “The horrific crime at RG Kar has shocked us to the core. No one to be spared, investigation must be quick & transparent. Thoughts, prayers & solidarity.”

Previously, she had been vocally critical of the Hindenburg report and had accused the SEBI chairperson. But now she remains notably silent following a series of protests in the state.

TMC MP Sagarika Ghose, in her official account, stated, “As the mother of a doctor, I am appalled and shocked at the heinous ghastly crime at RG Kar hospital over which there should be NO politics. The @MamataOfficial government stands for ZERO TOLERANCE on crimes against women. Whoever did this deserves the harshest possible punishment. No one will be spared. The key accused has already been arrested.”

As Malviya pointed out, none of these women identified the crime using the words – rape and murder.

This is not the first time the I.N.D.I.A alliance has displayed such behavior.

A similar pattern was observed during the Sandeshkali rape horror in TMC-ruled West Bengal. When heinous incidents occur in BJP-ruled states, like the rape of a minor in Hathras (Uttar Pradesh), they often call for the resignation of the government.

However, in this case, instead of questioning the West Bengal government, they can only “stand in solidarity with the victim.”

This perceived inconsistency and perceived irresponsibility in their response is widely criticized.

On January 23, the President of India Ram Nath Kovind unveiled a portrait of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at Rashtrapati Bhavan to commemorate his 125th birth anniversary celebrations.

Soon, a section of journalists and several leaders from the opposition jumped in to say that the person in the portrait was that of a Bengali actor named Prosenjit Chatterjee who had played Bose in his biopic.

Trinamool Congress MP who is known for her loud speeches in Parliament, criticized about how the President donated ₹5 lakh to the construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya but ‘honoured Netaji’ by unveiling a portrait of actor Prosenjit.

“God save India (because this government certainly can’t)” she wrote.

However, she later deleted this tweet.

Many other ‘journalists’ too took a dig at the portrait of the freedom fighter unveiled by the President. Sagarika Ghose, wife of another ‘journalist’ Rajdeep Sardesai called the portait as ‘fake Netaji’. Just like his wife, Rajdeep Sardesai too tweeted saying that the President could have put up an original portrait of Netaji adding that the one unveiled by President was the picture of actor Prosenjit.

Barkha Dutt, Swati Chaturvedi, and Roshini Singh who are known for being against the BJP too took at dig at the Hon’ble President of India.

However, their joy was short lived as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose, busted the lies peddled by these personalities.

Chandra Kumar Bose posted the picture original photograph of Netaji based on which portrait was drawn by Paresh Maity.

Following this, many on social media lashed out at these ‘journalists’ and leaders for doing unwarranted politics over Netaji. Some alleged that the misinformation was peddled by the Congress IT Cell.

That being the case, Twitter in its news section carried a headline stating “Portrait unveiled by President Ramnath Kovind is of Netaji, according to journalist

Many pointed out that the Twitter’s news section highlights did not even have a mention of the fake news peddled by the opposition leaders and the likes of Barkha Dutt, Sagarikha Ghose, Rajdeep, etc.

BJP Tamil Nadu Spokesperson SG Suryah pointed out that the headlines put out by Twitter was misleading and said that it was a section of the journalists who spread lies and not the other way around. “Your definition of this manufactured controversy is fallacious”, he said.
