Tamil Nadu’s leading news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai was allegedly taken off air by the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Limited (TACTV) on Saturday, October 4, 2025, leading to strong reactions from journalists and viewers. The move, reportedly made without prior notice, has revived debates over political control of state-run media distribution and freedom of expression.

According to sources, Puthiya Thalaimurai was removed from the TACTV network, which carries over 150 channels to subscribers across Tamil Nadu. The reason for the removal has not been officially disclosed. Following discussions between the channel’s management and TACTV officials, the channel was reportedly restored in some districts, though it remains unavailable in others.

The Chennai Press Club issued a statement condemning the development, saying that suspending or blocking a news channel’s telecast without prior notice amounted to suppression of press freedom. The organisation urged TACTV to restore the channel immediately, noting that such actions undermine the principles of free and fair journalism.

TACTV officials, including chairman Brajendra Navnit, were unavailable for comment.

This is not the first time Puthiya Thalaimurai has faced such a disruption. In 2017, the channel was temporarily removed from the Arasu Cable network after airing a survey related to the RK Nagar by-election, which was reportedly viewed as unfavourable to politician V.K. Sasikala.

The latest incident has also drawn attention from within Tamil media circles. Commentators have pointed out that when Puthiya Thalaimurai was taken off air during the previous AIADMK government, the channel had publicly raised the issue through its own broadcasts and social media handles. However, this time, despite reports of its removal circulating widely, the channel itself has not made any official statement or post about the issue on its platforms.

Observers note that the incident has also reignited debate over the government’s management of Arasu Cable, which was originally launched to ensure equal access and prevent private monopolies in cable television distribution. Critics allege that the selective inclusion or exclusion of channels based on political convenience contradicts the very principles of equality and justice that the government claims to uphold.

Meanwhile, Tamil Janam TV, another Tamil news channel, has alleged that it has been consistently denied inclusion on Arasu Cable for the past two years despite being available on major private platforms such as Tata Sky, Airtel, Jio, TCCL, and GTPL. Tamil Janam’s editor Anand T. Prasad said the government’s refusal to carry their channel raises questions about political bias and lack of transparency.

புதிய தலைமுறைக்கு வந்தால் ரத்தம்!?

Media analysts have pointed out that Arasu Cable was originally launched to ensure equal access and to prevent monopolies by private operators. However, the selective inclusion and exclusion of news channels based on political considerations has raised serious questions about transparency and accountability in the government’s media policy.

In the wake of a heartbreaking accident near Cuddalore where two schoolchildren lost their lives after a train collided with a van at a manned level crossing, the Dravidianist ecosystem has already begun spinning the narrative with sections of the media firmly backing the DMK’s line.

Shockingly, the focus has shifted from the tragic loss of life to linguistic blame. The gatekeeper, a Hindi-speaking worker, is now being painted as the root cause not based on facts, but seemingly for not speaking Tamil.

Dravidianist media, the Puthiya Thalaimurai, a news channel often seen echoing the ruling party’s stance, ran a news card with the headline, “Gatekeeper who doesn’t know Tamil.”

Not far behind, Sun News widely regarded as the DMK’s unofficial propaganda arm also framed the story around language, running the caption: “Accidents happen because those who don’t speak the language are appointed as gatekeepers…”

These attempts to communalize and linguistically polarize a tragedy have been met with disbelief and criticism. For many, it’s yet another example of how journalism in Tamil Nadu is increasingly becoming a political tool where even moments of mourning are hijacked to reinforce ideological talking points and distract from governance failures.

What Actually Happened?

On the morning of 9 July 2025, a private school van carrying four students attempted to cross a railway level crossing at Semmankuppam in Cuddalore district when it was hit by a fast-moving train traveling from Villupuram to Mayiladuthurai. The impact was devastating the van was dragged for over 50 metres.

Two students, Charumathi (15) and Venkatesh (10), were killed. The van driver, Sankar (45), and two other students were seriously injured and taken to the Cuddalore Government General Hospital.

Local villagers, who reached the scene before emergency services, rescued the injured and helped transport them to the hospital. Eyewitnesses blamed the gatekeeper, alleging that he had failed to close the crossing gate and was asleep at the time of the incident. Some villagers reportedly assaulted the gatekeeper, later identified as Pankaj Sharma. Sharma, in his defense, claimed that the van driver had pressured him to keep the gate open, a claim that has yet to be verified.

In response to the incident, Southern Railway has suspended Sharma pending a full inquiry. Cuddalore Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar stated that the cause of the tragedy will only be confirmed after a thorough investigation.

Netizens mocked and trolled the Dravidian media outlet, Puthiyathalaimurai News, after it mistakenly interpreted Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s budget speech. The budget included a ₹20,000-crore allocation to promote research, AI expansion, and geospatial initiatives for modernization. However, the news outlet misread “geospatial” as “JIO Space,” leading to widespread ridicule on social media for their misunderstanding and lack of accuracy in reporting.

In the Budget for 2025-26, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the introduction of the National Geospatial Mission. This mission aims to modernize land records and improve urban planning throughout India. It will build on the existing PM Gati Shakti framework to establish core geospatial infrastructure and data, enhancing the design and implementation of infrastructure projects.

Geospatial data refers to information tied to specific locations on the Earth’s surface. The National Geospatial Mission is expected to have a significant impact on sectors such as urban development and land management. This announcement comes at a time when the global geospatial market is projected to grow substantially, potentially reaching $1,064 million by 2030.

The government’s goal is to create a comprehensive geospatial database to streamline land reform processes, making them more efficient and transparent. This initiative is set to benefit not just government bodies but also private sector players, including geospatial and drone companies, which are likely to experience increased demand for their services.

Sitharaman highlighted that the mission aligns with the government’s focus on leveraging technology to improve governance and service delivery. The integration of geospatial data into planning processes is expected to enable more informed decision-making, supporting sustainable urban development. India is increasingly utilizing geospatial technologies and advancements in the space sector to drive its development goals. These technologies are critical in addressing challenges related to resource management, climate change, national security, and public health.

Against this backdrop, on 1 February 2025, the Dravidian media outlet Puthiyathalaimurai News allegedly shared a now-deleted social media post claiming, “Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a national ‘JIOSpace Mission’ for the development of the space sector in the budget.” This blunder quickly attracted widespread trolling from netizens.

Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) head Seeman, who has of late been taking the Dravidianists to the gutters, has once again become a target for Dravidianist media outlets like Puthiya Thalaimurai.

Seeman who arrived in Coimbatore Airport to campaign for his party’s candidate for the Erode East byelections, addressed reporters where he once again slammed Dravidian ideology fountainhead EV Ramasamy Naicker (EVR, hailed as ‘Periyar’ by his followers).

He also gave a separate interview to Puthiya Thalaimurai where the reporter asked a range of questions from attacking EVR to the recent controversy about Seeman’s alleged meeting with LTTE head Prabhakaran.

When the reporter questioned him about former NTK party cadres joining DMK in the presence of MK Stalin along with a big idol of EVR, Seeman said “These people have been expelled from the party long back. The Dravidianists have a compulsion to have Periyar as a facade and hide behind it. You keep Periyar to yourself. You bring that statue to campaign in Erode East bypoll. You talk about Periyar’s principles and ask votes. You pray to him and do sacrificial rituals. I don’t need Periyar.

Seeman also attacked those who placed EVR and Dr. Ambedkar on the same pedestal saying “Only a fool would do that. Will anyone who has read Ambedkar ever compare him with Periyar? There’s a difference between the Shudran defined by Ambedkar and Periyar. Is it written anywhere that only Tamils are Shudras? Why did he (EVR) mention Tamils separately? What’s you intention there? When he gets on stage and he says ‘Respected dignitaries on the dais, elders, mothers and Th*v*d*y* payalungale (bastards)’, what is the meaning of that? People then should’ve stoned or slippered him.

He also slammed DMK for its duplicity over attacking Brahmins while hiring Robin Sharma as a political strategist for elections.

When the reporter asked Seeman about LTTE Prabhakaran’s brother’s son remarks about him, Seeman said “He’s one pikkali paya. You’re talking about him!” and stormed away.

Pikkali Paya in colloquial Tamil means idiot or fool. However, Puthiya Thalaimurai chose to peddle half-truths against Seeman by beeping that word with a thumbnail and caption that said “Seeman who spoke to the level of adding a beep sound.

Other Dravidianist media are parroting this line to peddle propaganda against NTK head Seeman. Some even went on to peddle false propaganda that Seeman used the word Th*v*d*y* Paya (bastard in Tamil), which is not the case. Seeman had only quoted what EVR had said in a public meeting while using that word.

Puthiya Thalaimurai news channel abruptly canceled a debate on Deepavali celebration titled “Have no idea about it vs. Give too much hype. ” This debate topic, just before the popular Hindu festival, sparked widespread criticism from Hindus, who accused the channel of promoting anti-Hindu sentiments and pandering to the ruling party’s Dravidianist agenda.

Puthiya Thalaimurai & Dravidianist Narratives

Puthiya Thalaimurai has often been in the news (pun intended) for its bizarre reporting, especially when speaking the truth. They have aided the ruling dispensation in peddling Dravidian myths and propaganda among the masses.

Here is yet another instance that proves their allegiance to the anti-Hindu forces in the state.

Puthiya Thalaimurai came up with a debate topic, “Deepavali Celebration – Have no idea about it vs Give too much hype.”

The debate event was scheduled for 27 October 2024 at 2 PM at their Ekkatuthangal office premises. However, a netizen who called to inquire about more details about the event discovered that the programme had been cancelled.

When the announcement for the event had been made, several Hindus raised valid points in the comments section. Some questioned whether such debate topics would be seen during Christmas or Ramzan.

Some others were worried about it coinciding with the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam’s conference!

In total, the event has been cancelled and can be considered a small win for Hindus.

Dravidianists have been having a field day mocking Hindus over the beef adulteration in ghee in the Tirupati prasadam issue. Day in and day out, they have been trying to deride Hindus and their sentiments by talking about beef and making posts around it. Be it politicians or Dravidianist ideology supporters, they mocked and made fun of Hindus, especially Brahmins.

Several news media persons also indulged in the same. On 25 September 2024, the Dravidianist media channel Puthiya Thalaimurai shared a video dedicated to beef lovers. In the 6-minute video, the host Priya Rajendran talks about a place in Chennai that is dubbed the “Heaven for Beef Lovers“.

She is seen to be in a place named Dadashamakan located near Otteri in northern Chennai. The locality is a predominantly Muslim neighborhood with a population of around 5,000. The area is said to be known for its shops offering a wide variety of food items, particularly attracting regular customers for its “renowned” beef. Locals claim that no other part of the city can match the quality of beef available in Dadashamakan, with prices being comparatively lower than in other areas of Chennai.

In the video, the Puthiya Thalamurai anchor Priya says, “As soon as we enter the street, the fragrance is so appealing. We are in beef lovers’ heaven, Dadashamakan.” The video is interspersed with shots of beef being cooked in various methods, something that would make a vegetarian puke while making a beef lover salivate probably.

One of the members of the Muslim community then describes how the place got its name. “There is a Dada Peer dargah here and makan is an Urdu word, together the name Dadashamakan came to be. Meat shops have been here for the past 50 years.”

Then the Puthiya Thalamurai anchor goes on to find out what varieties of beef-based food she can get and gets a list of items from one of the sellers, a visibly Muslim man. He shows her the various parts of the cow that are converted into different types of food – thigh which is cooked over coal, and undercut piece which is supposed to be soft and relished by kids, apparently, then he shows her the seekh kebab made with minced beef and finally shows her the tawa curry made with small pieces of beef which are consumed with idiyappam and chapati. He also stated that the shop sold food worth ₹20,000-₹25000 per day.

Dadashamakan is said to have hundreds of such shops. The the Puthiya Thalamurai anchor then goes on to explain how the beef is supplied. She says, “They bring a week’s worth of cows from Andhra Pradesh and Vellore and they convert them to beef in a place nearby called Maaduthotti where it is checked for cleanliness and purity and then brought here.”

Then the video shows people eating the beef items, and butchers cutting the beef into pieces, which can get a bit nauseating, as she continues to narrate. She says, It is said that at least 2000kg of beef is sold per day here.”

One of the shop owners then goes on to justify the “healthy” nature of the beef saying, “Since it is cooked over coals, the cholesterol in the beef is removed and the end product is only meat. So the food only has meat and masala so the customers enjoy it. To add to this, many of them who go to the gym and indulge in fitness regimes come here often. So this place is very famous. The crowd starts to trickle in by 5 PM in the evenings and we close at midnight. “

Following this, Puthiya Thalamurai shows more images and video shots of people offering beef to the viewers as if in a mocking way and eating right on camera.

One of the customers says, Beef is like a banana plant, the way the entire plant is beneficial to us – be it the leaves, the stem, the banana, the flower, etc, in the same way, each part of cow meat is nutritious, has a lot of protein and is good to eat. I have been eating since my childhood and I like it, so I come here once a week to eat.”

A few more customers are interviewed, and they list the varieties they love eating. The Puthiya Thalamurai host then “explains” why beef is good for health. She says, “Did you know beef has all the nutrients that you need? It has vitamins, iron, minerals, zinc, fats, protein, etc. Doctors say beef can cure anaemia, fatigue, shrinking of skin, and improve immunity.”

They then get a nutritionist to explain how “good” beef is for humans. The nutritionist says, “Since it has high protein content, it can help increase muscles. It also contains Vitamins B6, B12, iron, which help cure issues with brain, nerves, and anaemia. Those who have these issues can benefit from consuming beef. The fat content is very high in beef. So if you have cholesterol issues, kidney disease, liver disease, or heart disease, your body cannot digest this high level of protein and fat. Such people must avoid it.”

And while all this happens, they keep showing video shots of the varieties of beef items.

The video ends with a few seconds showing the anchor relishing the meat and chewing on camera. She says, “This tastes out of the world. It costs less and gives you high protein and only beef can give you that. Beef lovers will find Dadashamakan a beef world.”

This Puthiya Thalamurai video comes at a time when the Tirupati laddu controversy is at its peak. Hindus in Tamil Nadu also observe pitrupaksha or Mahalaya during the Tamil month of Purattasi where they pay respects to their ancestors and avoid eating meat. To share such a video during such a holy period for Hindus is not only insulting but also belittling and not giving space to their emotions. The Puthiya Thalaimurai channel has once again proved its allegiance and loyalty to its Dravidianist masters by posting such a video on its social media.

A viral photo claiming to show Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s portrait displayed prominently at New York’s Times Square has been making rounds on social media, with several Dravidianist media outlets like News 18 Tamil Nadu, IBC Tamil and Puthiya Thalaimurai sharing it as a grand welcome for him in the US. However, a reverse-image search and subsequent analysis by fact-checker Newschecker Tamil revealed that the photo is a doctored image, not an authentic display.

Upon investigating the viral photo, it was discovered that the image had been altered. A reverse-image search led to a similar Times Square photo found on The Clio, a reputable source. When compared with the viral photo, showed that the image of Chief Minister MK Stalin had been edited over existing advertisements of other companies.

Further research unearthed a 2015 photo from the Nantucket Preservation website featuring Times Square but with different advertisements. The analysis suggests that the original photo, likely taken during a New Year’s Ball Drop event at Times Square, had been digitally manipulated to include Stalin’s portrait.

Original Picture

This doctored image has been circulating online for several years, misleading many.

Doctored image

The evidence clearly indicates that the viral photo claiming to show MK Stalin’s image in Times Square is fabricated, and Dravidianist media outlets like News 18 Tamil Nadu, IBC Tamil, and Puthiya Thalaimurai have unfortunately contributed to spreading this misinformation.

Amplified By DMK Members

The fake post was shared by a DMK handle and amplified by DMK MLA and minister for industries TRB Rajaa.

Abusive speaker, Sivaji Krishnamurthy also shared the fake news.

This fake news was also shared by Dravidianist handles as well as other party members of the INDI alliance.

Niranjan Kumar, a journalist affiliated with Puthiya Thalaimurai TV (PTTV), has yet again come under scrutiny for a series of posts aimed at shaping narratives and promoting the Congress and I.N.D.I alliance. Despite claiming to be based in New Delhi on his social media accounts, Kumar has been criticized for failing to provide accurate data and instead resorting to simply copying and pasting information from Google searches that align with his own views.

During this recent election season, Kumar seemingly expressed a strong desire for the victory of the Congress, but when that did not materialize, he was seen celebrating the success of the DMK like several other Dravidianist journalists.

One of his recent posts, following Narendra Modi’s swearing-in for a third term as Prime Minister of India, attracted people’s attention. Kumar misleadingly stated on his X account that Modi’s third cabinet did not include any members directly elected from Tamil Nadu. This assertion raised questions about the logic behind such a claim, given that the DMK, as the opposition, secured victory in all Lok Sabha seats. It seemed as if he was suggesting to PM Modi that he add DMK members to the cabinet.

Niranjan Kumar wrote, “Important: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third cabinet did not include a single member of parliament directly elected from Tamil Nadu. L Murugan, Nirmala Sitharaman, and others have also been elected to Rajya Sabha from other states.”

In the subsequent post, Niranjan Kumar peddled a narrative concerning Ravneet Singh Bittu, a former Congress member, who secured a seat in the Union Cabinet despite facing defeat in Ludhiana, Punjab. However, the rationale behind giving him a cabinet position is unknown, it is noteworthy that Bittu is the grandson of Beant Singh, a prominent figure in Punjab’s anti-militancy campaign. Beant Singh was assassinated during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Punjab. Notably, two Khalistani sympathizers, Amritpal Singh, and Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, emerged victorious in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, despite being incarcerated on terrorism charges in Dibrugarh jail. However, Niranjan did not mention anything about it.

Niranjan Kumar wrote, “Ravneet Singh Bittu has been given a seat in the Union Cabinet despite his defeat in Punjab’s Ludhiana. (just saying)”

In Tamil Nadu, the opposition mocked the 39 MPs’ victory of the DMK, suggesting they ‘they going to eat samosas in the canteen‘. This criticism deeply affected Dravidian journalist Niranjan Kumar, who staunchly buttressed the DMK MPs by pointing out that even BJP (indirectly) MLAs, who secured seats in the legislature, are going to eat samosas in canteens. This tweet seems to underscore his loyalty and sympathy towards the DMK.

Niranjan Kumar wrote, “Opposition MPs are going to the canteen to eat samosas But the reality is that the legislatures also have canteens and samosas

In another post, Niranjan attempted to convey that in Narendra Modi’s recent speech, he did not mention the specter (sengol), implying that Modi, after his defeat in Tamil Nadu, refrained from praising the state, as he usually does wherever he goes, extolling the Tamil language and culture. However, despite the absence of a specific mention of the specter, he did highlight Tamil Nadu’s significant double-digit percentage growth and commended the state’s faith in the BJP and NDA. Instead of acknowledging this fact, the Dravidianist journo attempted to divert attention by focusing on something else in PM Modi’s NDA speech.

Niranjan Kumar wrote, “Interesting: Prime Minister Modi did not mention the scepter even once in his very long speech

In two other posts, Niranjan Kumar raised concerns about the removal of statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Ambedkar in the Parliament complex. However, this claim was promptly refuted and labeled as a fake narrative with the Parliament secretariat clarifying that the statues were being relocated systematically and respectfully within the Parliament House complex. Despite this clarification from the secretariat, the so-called Delhi-based journalist chose not to acknowledge or convey their statement, instead opting to propagate the narrative of the Congress party.

This post raises the question of whether Niranjan Kumar is indeed a journalist based in Delhi or if he is from 24, Akbar Road, New Delhi.

Niranjan Kumar wrote, “The Congress party has alleged that the statues of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and the architect of the Constitution of India, Ambedkar, are being removed and placed in a corner. Congress alleges that BJP has started insulting political leaders

In the subsequent post, Niranjan Kumar wrote, “The issue of removal of statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Ambedkar in the Parliament complex has created a lot of turmoil among other political parties. Statements of condemnation continue to come in from various quarters

Niranjan Kumar, along with other sympathizers of the Congress, expressed joy when the BJP, led by Narendra Modi, secured 240 seats, considering it a victory for a minority government. They spread the narrative that Chandrababu Naidu would challenge the NDA. However, Niranjan and his fellow Congress sympathizers were left embarrassed when he declared his full support for Narendra Modi’s third term.

Niranjan Kumar wrote, “Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin met and congratulated Chandrababu Naidu, who is set to take over as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, at the Delhi airport. The Indian political scene keeps giving many major surprises every second.”

In one of his posts, he shared that old social media posts of Chandrababu Naidu criticizing Prime Minister Modi have resurfaced and are now going viral. Naidu had previously criticized Modi for allegedly undermining constitutional institutions. However, we know the individual behind the resurgence of these posts and it is way apparent from his frequent posts.

Niranjan Kumar wrote, “Chandrababu Naidu’s old social media posts criticizing Prime Minister Modi are now going viral Chandrababu Naidu had criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for destroying all constitutional institutions.

In subsequent posts, Niranjan Kumar, driven by his animosity towards the BJP and Narendra Modi, unscrupulously disseminated false data without conducting any proofreading or fact-checking. Even readily available data on platforms like Wikipedia contained accurate information, yet he chose to disregard it all in his attempt to defame Modi. Presumably, some news outlets highlighted the actual results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, stating, “In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi triumphed over Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party with a substantial margin of 674,664 votes, securing 63.62 percent of the total votes.” However, this misguided journalist, Niranjan, lacking even basic language consciousness, blindly propagated false data regarding the winning margin. The correct data was 4,79,505.

Niranjan wrote, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Varanasi constituency Prime Minister Modi, who faced setbacks in the first four rounds, won by a margin of just 1.5 lakh votes. He had won the last election by a margin of more than six lakh votes. A few hours after the election results, he thanked the people of his constituency.”

Niranjan wrote, “Big breaking: Prime Minister Narendra Modi wins Varanasi constituency. Last time Prime Minister Narendra Modi had won the Varanasi constituency by a margin of 6 lakh 76 thousand votes, this time he won by a margin of 1 lakh 60 thousand votes. This time he got lesser votes than the margin of victory last time. Congress’s Ajay Rai has secured more than 4 lakh votes.”

In another instance, Niranjan propagated the narrative circulated by the DMK that Prime Minister Modi commenced his speech at the BJP headquarters with the phrase “Jai Jagannath.” While this statement held truth, the context behind it was that was different as the BJP had secured a significant victory in Odisha, where the Jagannath Temple is located. However, this alleged journalist opted to spin the narrative, suggesting that Modi’s shift from “Jai Shree Ram” to “Jai Jagannath” was due to a perceived defeat in Ayodhya.

Niranjan wrote, “Prime Minister Modi started his speech at the BJP headquarters by saying Jai Jagannath.

Furthermore, in a particularly distasteful post, he trivialized a common topic of conversation by asking his followers about their breakfast and lunch choices. However, the underlying motive behind this seemingly innocuous query became apparent when considering the recent defeat of K. Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu BJP president, in Coimbatore. Following Annamalai’s loss, the DMK reportedly engaged in a grotesque display, publicly beheading a goat with Annamalai’s photo affixed to it, symbolizing his defeat. The DMK went as far as to refer to Annamalai as the goat, citing his background as an agricultural farmer who once mentioned that he was unashamed of his roots in goat herding.

Niranjan wrote, “So guys what’s for breakfast? What do you want for lunch???”

The lamentable truth lies in the behavior of certain journalists affiliated with news agencies in Delhi, who consistently propagate false information and push their own ideologies, disregarding factual accuracy. Despite being aware of the actual facts, they choose to conceal the truth. This pattern represents a recurring theme in the journalism landscape of Tamil Nadu, where the fourth estate consistently fails to uphold its duty to inform accurately and objectively.

Tamil Nadu will be one of the first states to “inaugurate” the festival of democracy – the Great Indian Elections on 19 April 2024 and with the campaigns heating up by the minute, BJP state president and Coimbatore Lok Sabha candidate Annamalai made bold statements in an interview with Puthiya Thalaimurai channel. Speaking aboard the campaign bus in the RG Pudur area of the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency, Annamalai spoke in length about the Dravidian parties in the state and more particularly, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He asserted that AIADMK would cease to exist after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He emphasised the BJP’s intention to eliminate Dravidian parties from Tamil Nadu’s political landscape if given the opportunity. Criticising AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palanisamy for perceived arrogance, Annamalai also attributed the BJP’s defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu to AIADMK’s corruption.

When asked about how he felt the “battlefield” was, Annamalai replied, “Coimbatore is a different field altogether. What began as a 3-way fight has now changed. People have moved towards the BJP, all neutral voters. Coimbatore will see 60% vote share for the BJP – this is because of the neutral voters shifting towards the BJP.”

When asked about the formidable organisational strength and vote bank possessed by the ADMK and DMK, Annamalai stressed that despite BJP’s smaller footprint, it could boast of a robust foundation, having garnered support from diverse demographics like youth, women, professionals, and first-time voters, unlike our counterparts. He compared it to a small startup challenging a large PSU. Annamalai also stated that he was very optimistic about it and the results would be available for all to see on 4 June 2024.

Dismissing claims by the Dravidian parties that the BJP’s presence was confined to social media and lacked ground support with insufficient booth agents, Annamalai said that it was common practice for parties worldwide to downplay shortcomings publicly. He also firmly believed that BJP’s growth was undeniable in the state and said he anticipated the BJP to secure over 20% vote share, with the NDA surpassing 30%.

Annamalai also said he anticipated that both the DMK and the ADMK would come together to fight the BJP and that this would be seen especially in Coimbatore. He added that both Dravidian parties recognised that once BJP established itself in the region, it would threaten their survival. Consequently, he also alleged that they were actively attempting to impede the party’s growth wherever they perceived it. He noted that voters who previously supported these parties, particularly women, were now backing the BJP, their affinity for Modi was evident and that his victory was widely expected. He added that even the party cadre from these two parties might defect once the election results are revealed.

When asked if both parties would be decimated in this election, Annamalai replied, “One will surely be decimated in 2024. This is because one party has a strong alliance, so it will not be affected. But we do not know whether the party is strong or their alliance is strong. But if you ask me after 2024, one Dravidian party will disappear. I leave it to the people and I know that people have decided that one party doesn’t need to be in the state. Do we need a party solely to oppose the DMK? That is not an ideology, we do not need a party for that. Tamil Nadu needs a party that offers good governance. Over the past 33 months, you as a journalist know who has peeled the layers of the DMK and placed it before the people – be it corruption charges, other notes we have shared, or demonstrations or protests that we have put forth to the public. If they are talking of anti-DMK, we surely do that.”

When asked about the opposition’s efforts on the ground, Annamalai remarked that rather than effective opposition, the AIADMK mainly resorted to attacking him personally. He noted that in their videos, a significant portion was dedicated to criticising him, without addressing the Prime Minister. Regarding the decision to break the alliance, Annamalai expressed confidence in his actions, citing electoral data from 2014 and 2019. He highlighted that despite being in an alliance in 2019, the BJP and AIADMK garnered fewer votes in comparison to 2014, indicating a lack of effective vote transfer. Annamalai emphasised that the alliance did not resonate with the public, especially when they claimed to stand against corruption. As the TNBJP head, he opted to contest local body elections independently, believing it was the right course of action.

During the interview, Annamalai addressed the perception that the BJP was waiting for an alliance with the AIADMK, clarifying that the AIADMK’s viewpoint was narrow-focused, considering only itself in the state. He highlighted the presence of other parties like PMK and IJK in Tamil Nadu and emphasised the BJP’s fair treatment of all alliance partners, regardless of seat-sharing arrangements. Annamalai underscored the BJP’s commitment to equitable partnerships and its stance against corruption, citing instances of misappropriation of funds allocated for development projects by the AIADMK. He criticised the lack of basic development in Coimbatore, attributing the AIADMK’s success in the 2021 elections to its alliance with the BJP. Annamalai expressed confidence that the AIADMK would face electoral losses due to corruption and caste politics. He predicted victories for OPS in Ramanathapuram and TTV in Theni, suggesting that the AIADMK cadre would shift their support accordingly. Annamalai also challenged the notion that votes were solely for EPS, emphasising the importance of the party symbol in influencing voter decisions.

During the interview, Annamalai addressed the challenge of breaking the AIADMK stronghold in West Tamil Nadu by highlighting historical shifts in political allegiance. He noted that when the Congress lost influence in the region, many supporters migrated to MGR’s AIADMK and subsequently to JJ’s leadership. Annamalai emphasised the importance of distinguishing present leaders from past icons and urged voters to recognise those involved in corruption. He pointed out that the cadre understand the value of aligning with a stronger political party and highlighted the significant defection of around 25 former AIADMK MLAs to the BJP following the announcement of elections. Annamalai emphasised that these were not marginal figures but influential individuals who chose to align with the BJP.

Responding to the observations of the DMK’s approach towards Modi and the AIADMK’s stance on the BJP, Annamalai acknowledged that as an emerging party, his communication style was straightforward and heartfelt, not aimed at appeasement. Annamalai affirmed his unwavering support for Prime Minister Modi, stating that any disparaging remarks about the PM would be met with a firm response from him. He reiterated his dedication to Modi’s leadership and his belief in India’s advancement under it. Annamalai suggested that the AIADMK’s reluctance to criticise the BJP indicated a close relationship akin to relatives.

Annamalai also responded to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK Chief, MK Stalin’s criticism of the BJP’s performance, citing the central government’s allocation of funds to Tamil Nadu as evidence of its contributions. He pointed to a whitepaper on the BJP website supporting this claim. Annamalai contrasted the DMK’s record of opening five government medical colleges during their tenure with the BJP’s achievement of opening 15. He also highlighted other initiatives such as infrastructure development, Mudra loans, and the expansion of airports, etc. Annamalai criticised MK Stalin for his negative outlook, accusing him of ignoring the government’s accomplishments and exaggerating the BJP’s shortcomings. He challenged Stalin to substantiate his claims of fulfilling 99% of his poll promises and accused the DMK of only achieving a fraction of its manifesto pledges. Annamalai condemned Stalin’s resort to divisive tactics, likening it to outdated strategies from the 1960s.

Lately, whenever the Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai makes a statement, it quickly gains popularity in the region. Media outlets often swarm around him to boost their viewership ratings.

However, Puthiya Thalaimurai news seems to have adopted a different tactic to gain attention by twisting Annamalai’s words to spread propaganda. Puthiya Thalaimurai recently uploaded a video on its official platform with the headline “None of us came under quota system… I came with two tin boxes…” attributing to Annamalai, aiming to maximize its audience reach.

In the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency, three strong contenders are vying for victory: Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu BJP leader; Ganapathi Rajkumar, a former mayor and DMK candidate; and Singai Ramachandran, the President of the AIADMK IT Wing. Annamalai, addressing reporters in Coimbatore on 25 March 2024, remarked, “In 2002, he (ADMK candidate Singai Ramachandran) didn’t know his father being an MLA got him a seat to study in the college using the quota benefit. AIADMK’s candidate father is an MLA, it’s dynasty politics, Govindaraj. He has come to politics using quota. I came to Coimbatore for the first time in 2002. I was wearing trousers, my father wearing a veshti, we brought two tin boxes from the village, took three buses and came to Coimbatore in 2002.

That was 22 years ago. My age was 17 years. I took a town bus from Gandhipuram bus stand and got down to Peelamedu with two tin boxes. I mean in 2002, my father and I stood in front of PSG Engineering College in Peelamedu with two tin boxes. Then I asked my father, will this town be kind to us? We all come from the village.. 40 houses in total. We reached Coimbatore by boarding three different buses. It is a big city. Will I be able to survive in this city?

Because I got an opportunity to study in PSG College of Engineering. I was not privileged, I did not get a seat through MLA quota. I came to Coimbatore in 2002 with 2 tin boxes, just as you all work hard as individuals and are in this land. I studied in PSG College of Engineering for 5 years. My wife studied in the same college and was a year junior to me. She studied in PSG College and we both got married and settled in Coimbatore. You have to understand one thing, Annamalai didn’t come in quota system.. Vanathi didn’t come in through quota system, Vanathi did not come here through quota system, Modi did not come here through quota system, no one here achieved all this through quota system.”

Just as in the past, this video title quickly caught the attention of numerous netizens, especially those inclined towards the opposition. Without even watching the video, they immediately began making statements based solely on the title, claiming that the Tamil Nadu BJP chief opposes the quota system and speaks negatively about it. It was only after others provided clarification that they deleted their posts upon gaining clarity. Among those jumping the gun include Dalit activist Shalin Maria Lawrence and political commentator Sumanth Raman.
