On 14 April 2025, DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth paid an emotional tribute to her late husband, actor-turned-politician ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth, highlighting the special friendship he shared with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking in a heartfelt video message shared on X, she reflected on the deep personal connection between the two leaders, describing it as a relationship grounded in genuine respect, warmth, and affection — one that transcended politics.

Premalatha recalled that Prime Minister Modi always considered Vijayakanth not just as a political ally but as a dear friend and elder brother, often affectionately calling him the “Lion of Tamil Nadu.”

She shared, “Captain Vijayakanth was not just a towering figure in Tamil cinema and politics, but a man who earned the love and respect of many, including our Prime Minister. Narendra Modi ji always saw him as more than a political colleague. He would fondly call him the ‘Lion of Tamil Nadu’ and check on him like an elder brother during his illness. Their bond was built on true affection and mutual respect – it was a friendship that went beyond politics.”

Sharing her memories of the bond between her husband, Captain Vijayakant, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an emotional video, Premalatha Vijayakant said, “Modiji used to call Captain the Lion of Tamil Nadu. Both of them were very good friends. Whenever it was Captain’s birthday, he by himself would call and wish Captain personally. Every time on his birthday, just like that. When Captain was a little bit sick, Modi ji himself asked him about his health issues and all. He spoke to me and said, ‘If you need any help all over the world, we can help you.’ Then he told me, ‘If you need anything, just call me and ask. I’m like your elder brother, I will help you.’ Those words I can’t forget in my lifetime. We used to talk everything very freely to him. We used to discuss many things for the people. At that time, he was very humble. He didn’t behave like a prime minister, he was like a brother to us. Modi ji is like a brother. One day in Trichy, there was a huge gathering and Modi ji spoke about Captain. He talked about the good relationship between Captain and Modi ji. He even wrote a great letter to Captain. In that letter, he explained everything about their relationship. That was a great honor for us. We will never forget in our lifetime. When Modi ji was taking oath as the prime minister in the central hall. He called all the NDA partners to the hall. We were there, and in that hall, Modiji said only two names: Captain Vijayakanth and Premalatha Vijayakanth. He said they worked very hard for the success of the NDA Alliance. That was a very great honor. After that, Modi ji gave the honorable Padma Bhushan award to Captain. I went to Delhi to receive the award on behalf of Captain. That day, I will never forget in my life. I received the award from the president, and the prime minister was there. I had a little time to speak with them. It was a great honor for Captain after his death. The award we received from Modi ji and the central government. We used to admire Modi ji for many things because he is the Prime Minister of India but he showed himself through simplicity and humanity. He is a great leader. Prime Minister also came from a small family, but he achieved great things. He is still very humble, with great humanity and simplicity. That is what makes Modi ji take all the people’s hearts.”

Vijayakanth, the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), passed away on 28 December 2023, at the age of 71 due to age-related health issues. Known for his impactful contributions to Tamil cinema and his bold foray into politics, he was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan — an honor Premalatha said reflected the deep respect and affection Modi held for him.

She also shared insights into the Prime Minister’s character during their private interactions, describing him as humble and grounded. Premalatha acknowledged that DMDK had parted ways with the BJP to ally with the AIADMK, while PMK chose to partner with the BJP. However, she emphasized that these realignments never affected the personal bond between Vijayakanth and the Prime Minister.

Our admiration for Modiji was always sincere. He’s a leader who came from humble beginnings and rose to the highest office, staying true to his roots. That’s why people connect with him,” she concluded.

Her message resonated deeply with supporters of both Vijayakanth and the BJP, shedding light on the powerful human stories that often exist behind political headlines, and the enduring friendships that rise above party lines.

Premalatha Vijayakanth, the General Secretary of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, stated that cow urine (gaumutra) or Komiyam holds significant religious value for Hindus, whether or not to consume it is a personal belief, and no one has the right to interfere or impose moral policing on this matter. This comment comes at the backdrop of hypocrisy of Dravidianists, who advocate for the right to consume beef as a personal choice, yet are now ridiculing and targeting IIT Madras Director Professor Veezhinathan Kamakoti for his comments on the medicinal properties of cow urine.

Speaking to the press in Pudukkottai District, Premalatha Vijayakanth addressed the recent debate over komiyam, saying, “There was a big argument about komiyam two days ago. I don’t know if you forgot to ask or not, but I will clarify it myself. One group says it’s healthy to consume komiyam, while another group was discussing against it, advising not to drink it. Here’s my opinion: komiyam is considered sacred by everyone, especially by Hindus, and this is well-known. If you like it, drink it; if you don’t, then don’t. No one can make a fuss about what someone should eat, drink, or worship a particular god. There’s nothing wrong with it, as they find it acceptable for themselves, and there’s no ban on it. Hindus sprinkle komiyam on their heads, and Captain and I have done that too; we also raise cows at home. Whether one drinks it or not is a matter of personal faith and a individual rights, it is decided by them and no one can interfere or impose their opinions. Some say there are medical benefits, while others claim there are bacteria harmful to humans. So, as I see it, there are two different opinions on the matter.”

She then went on to say, “Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai once stated that a person can drink their own urine. Whether it’s right or wrong, that’s a matter of personal belief. And it’s not just him; I’ve heard similar stories in villages where urine is used for treating eye infections, mouth allergies, and so on.”

She then questioned, “Now, do you accept all of this? Is it something we should welcome? This is also an individual’s personal preference, and no one can force their views on another.” She concluded by adding that, just like Morarji Desai’s belief, the decision to consume komiyam or not is a personal choice and preference for each individual.

On 6 January 2025, DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth accused the ruling DMK of imposing a ‘mini-emergency‘ in Tamil Nadu. She made this statement after her party was denied permission to hold a protest in Chennai against several issues, including the recent sexual assault of a girl student on the Anna University campus, the rampant availability of drugs, and the ongoing struggle faced by the farmers affected after cyclone Fengal. She also voiced her support for Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi and stated that there was no harm in playing the National Anthem twice in the Assembly, as per the Governor’s request.

DMDK supporters, led by party Deputy General Secretary B Parthasarathi, staged protests in front of the Chennai Collectorate and near Maduravoyal, where several party members were arrested.

Premalatha strongly condemned the government’s refusal to grant permission for the protest. “Have we ever caused any violence, damaged public property, or disrupted the public? We applied for permission, and they remained silent until the very end before denying it. The state government has effectively imposed a mini-emergency. The DMK organized numerous protests when it was in the opposition. Why are people now being denied the right to express their views in a democratic country? Opposition parties must have the freedom to voice their concerns and organize protests. No one should have the right to suppress them,” she said.

She also accused the DMK of hypocrisy, pointing out how their behavior has changed once in power. “When the AIADMK was in charge, the DMK criticized the ₹2500 Pongal gift as insufficient. Now, in power, they’re not even offering ₹1000 for the festival. They claim there’s no revenue—where is the revenue?” she questioned.

Additionally, Premalatha defended the Governor’s request to play the National Anthem twice in the Assembly. “Whenever the Governor comes to the Assembly, a similar situation arises. He attends once or twice a year, and what is he asking for? National Anthem be sung with the Tamil Thaai Vazhthu, and after all the speech concludes, the National Anthem should be played again. What is wrong with this? you can sing the National Anthem twice. My question is, what are you going to lose by doing what the Governor asks? Shouldn’t the National Anthem be sung twice in the Assembly? He walked out because his request was ignored. The same situation faced by the public. We are asking for our right to demonstrate but they are refusing to grant permission. Today, the Governor walked out, and parties like ours were arrested for protesting—this is happening now. There’s oppression everywhere. Stalin wants to suppress and control everything. There’s no doubt that in the 2026 elections, the people will teach you a lesson, just like a boomerang.”

She strongly asserted, “Our opinion is, singing the National Anthem twice is not wrong. If they try to make an issue out of it, then he (the Governor) is simply exercising his authority and walking out.”

The Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) held its meeting of the general committee and executive committee at Thiruverkadu near Chennai on 14 December 2023.

The founder leader of the party Vijayakanth attended the meeting along with his wife Premalatha Vijayakanth.

Vijayakanth who has been off the political scene for a long time due to his health condition, was recently admitted to the hospital after his condition deteriorated.

The bulletin conveyed optimism about his complete recovery, mentioning the necessity for minimal pulmonary support. The expected duration of his hospitalization was estimated to be around 14 days. The news of his deteriorating health led to an outpour of well-wishes from across the spectrum on social media.

Against this backdrop, the party convened a meeting of the general committee and executive committee on 14 December 2023. When Vijayakanth entered the hall, cadres of the DMDK were seen overwhelmed with emotion and chanted slogans wishing for his long life.

A resolution was passed to make Premalatha the ‘Acting President’ of the party. Vijayakanth would continue as the founding president of the DMDK. As soon as the announcement was made, Premalatha fell on Vijayakanth’s feet and sought his blessings.

Premalatha Vijayakanth, the leader of Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam and wife of the party’s founder, strongly lashed out at Udhayanidhi Stalin during a press meeting on 15 November 2023. She, in her role as the Treasurer of National Progressive Dravida Kazhagam, was in Tuticorin. Her visit was in connection to her attendance at a wedding ceremony hosted at the residence of the District Secretary in Kanyakumari.

When asked about the NEET exam and its impact on students, Premalatha said, “Nothing like that. Udhayanidhi is the only one who is hanging on to NEET to make it an issue. Supreme Court itself has said that NEET will stay, students are clear about it and so are the teachers and parents. The one who is confusing them is these politicians. If they keep quiet, students from TN will rank first in these exams. Among all the states, students of TN are the most intelligent. Why are they confusing them? Be quiet and do your work, don’t confuse the students. Our students can get the highest marks on a national level. I request all parents, students, and teachers to not get carried away by the words of people like Udhayanidhi and focus on studying. It is clear that if you have to study MBBS you have to clear the NEET exam, you cannot do anything about it. So we have to follow that, no other way.”

A reporter mentioned Udhayanidhi Stalin having completed his political campaign in Kanyakumari and that police have been standing on the roads since morning. She replied, “This is happening to everyone. You asked me a question, so many murders are occurring especially in Thoothukudi. The police force is there to protect the people. But when a politician visits this side, they deploy 50-100 police officers for them. What is anyone going to do? No one is going to do anything. The police force is there to protect the people. Give the people security. No one is going to harm the politicians. They have a lot of security. Just because one politician turns up here, deploying 500-1000 police officers for security is a waste. I remember what Kamarajar said. Upon hearing the police siren, he would ask what is that, the people would say sir security for you. He would rubbish it saying, let’s do our job. Such simple leaders used to live on this land. These people are just wasting taxpayer’s money. There is no need. Are they going to listen to us?”

Another reporter asked her about the 1000 rupee scheme and that many women did not receive it. She replied saying, “Did any woman ask to give them 1000 rupees a month? No one asked. You said that if you win, we will give you 1000 rupees. You are not able to give it today. When campaigning, you said that you would give it to all the women. But today, you say that you will give it to the eligible women. What eligibility are you looking for? Did you look for eligibility during elections? Today why are you looking at eligibility when it comes to giving that 1000 rupees? Women are very angry today. The result of this will definitely be seen in the elections.”

A reporter then moved on to asking about the Sanathana Dharma remarks issue. She said, “He’s made the mistake but pretending that nothing happened. We are all witnessing the opposition to what he said. When we talk about religion, caste, and food habits, we have to be very careful. These are very sensitive issues. No one should talk about religion, caste, or food habits. Everyone has their own religion and caste. Everyone has their own culture. Why are you pinpointing mistakes in it? His own mother goes to all the temples. Stalin says it is her wish. But when others go, they say it is wrong. Before advising others, we should think about whether we are doing it ourselves. Captain is very clear about his principles. See we all wear vibhuti and kumkum always. He came to power acknowledging the fact that his alliance is with the people and God. But these people lie that there is no God and also perform yagna and homa. Why are you advising others? Let your family follow it first. Then tell the people.”

DMDK leader Vijayakanth in the 2011 legislative assembly elections forged an alliance with the AIADMK and entered the fray in 41 constituencies. Out of these, his party achieved significant success, securing victory in 29 seats. Notably, the DMDK outperformed the DMK in terms of seat wins. Vijayakanth, for the second time, clinched the position of MLA by triumphing in the Rishivandhiyam constituency. From 2011 to 2016, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
