Prashant Kishor, chief of Jan Suraaj Abhiyan, on Thursday said that if implemented with the right intent, the ‘One Nation, One Election’ can be beneficial for the country. “If implemented with the right intent, this idea would be highly beneficial for the nation,” said Prashant Kishor.

Kishor highlighted that the proposal’s success will depend heavily on the purpose and intention behind its implementation. “I welcomed the idea if it is pursued to benefit the nation, but also cautioned against its misuse. If this law targets or harms specific groups, it could have negative consequences. The honesty and integrity of the government’s approach will determine its success,” Kishor said.

Drawing on his extensive experience in electoral politics, Kishor highlighted that around one-fourth of the country’s population votes every year due to frequent elections across various states and levels of government. This continuous election cycle, he explained, often prevents those in power from focusing fully on governance, as they are always in election mode. By consolidating elections to occur once or twice in a term, Kishor believes that not only would the government have more time to focus on governance, but also time and resources – both for the government and the public – would be saved.

“The ‘One Nation One Election’ concept adds to the broader conversation on electoral reforms, where the aim is to streamline elections across the country for greater efficiency and governance stability,” Kishor said. “The electoral process that has been in place for the last 50 years cannot be changed overnight. The government should allow 4-5 years to implement such a significant change gradually,” he said.

On 2 February 2024, Indian Express conducted an exclusive discussion with Prashant Kishor during the ‘Express Adda Inside Politics’ event. Kishor as the guest was engaged in a conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director of The Indian Express, and Vandita Mishra, National Opinion Editor of The Indian Express.

Prashant Kishor has extensive experience as a political strategist, having worked for various political parties, including the BJP, JD(U), INC, AAP, YSRCP, DMK, and TMC. His notable contributions include his work in the 2011 Gujarat Assembly Elections, where he assisted Narendra Modi in securing re-election as Chief Minister. Kishor gained widespread recognition when Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG), an election campaign group he conceptualized, played a crucial role in helping the BJP, led by Narendra Modi, secure an absolute majority in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

During his interview, he commented on various current political affairs. He expressed his perplexity at Rahul Gandhi embarking on a Yatra from Manipur two months before the Lok Sabha polls. Additionally, he noted that Nitish Kumar’s influence over voters seems to have diminished due to numerous policy reversals. Furthermore, he highlighted that from June 2023 to February 2024, the INDIA bloc has made minimal efforts to engage with the public.

However, Tamilnadu netizens expressed particular joy when they discovered interview questions related to the state’s politics. When Goenka asked Kishor about investments in a list of political leaders, Kishor sarcastically dismissed them as poor investments. This humorous exchange caught the attention of netizens, who used the video clip to engage in trolling and enjoy some light-hearted banter.

In a viral one-minute video, Anant Goenka playfully prompts Prashant Kishor to choose politicians as stocks, but Kishor declines, humorously labeling the mentioned politicians as “potted plants” destined for poor performance.

Anant Goenka: If you are a stock picker and these politicians were stocks (immediately the crowd and Kishor started laughing) who would you bet on, who would you bet on or shall I give you a list, you want to tell me who will you bet on?

Prashant Kishor: I will not

Anant Goenka: Okay’ll Akhilesh yadav, Adithya Thackrey, Chirag Paswan, KTR, Jegan Reddy, Raghav Chaddha, Omar Abbdullah, Udhayanidhi Stalin and Abhishek Banerjee

Prashant Kishor: Look what he is mentioning, all potted plants (crowd laughing) see he wants me to pick from 10 bad stocks which are going to be multi-badder. None.

Internet users began trolling and posting sarcastic comments directed at Udayanidhi Stalin, engaging in online criticism and mockery of his actions.

During the same interview when Anant Goenka asks Prashant Kishor about the needed change in Dravidian politics, and Prashant Kishor expresses concern over the excessive influence of money, citing that elections in Southern states are becoming incredibly expensive, with spending surpassing even that of Northern India, calling it a worrisome trend.

Anant Goenka: The one thing that needs to be changed in Dravidian politics?
Prashant Kishor: Dravidian politics?
Anant Goenka: Yes
Prashant Kishor: Dependant on cash. It is a sad affair for some of the most prosperous and well-performing states, the influence of the money in politics is far greater and worrisome than what it is in Northern India. So, elections in Tamilnadu, Andra, Telangana, Karnataka to some extent now in Maharastra also are becoming so expensive, and the kind the money, which we hear and see is just unimaginable. An MP… member of parliament in Tamilnadu the money which they spent probably is good enough to fight the whole state in the north. It’s sad

Netizens, in response to Kishor’s remark, criticized Dravidian parties for their widespread use of money in politics, expressing their dissent.

After poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s India Today interview with Rajdeep Sardesai went viral where he predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party would garner 7-15% voteshare, yet another video of him speaking to an audience started making the rounds on social media platforms.

In the one-minute video clip, Prashant Kishor is seen saying, “I am saying it on your face that there is no other community that is as scared as you in this country, you are so scared of the BJP, that even in your sleep you are thinking of the BJP only. Those parties who make your children miserable, a laborer, those who drank their blood – you continue voting for them just out of fear of the BJP. You say you do not fear them, in your community, your Prophet said that if there is no awareness, you cannot achieve anything. Today’s muslim does not want to be aware. I have seen this across the country, no Muslim wants to wake up/be aware. Muslims worry a lot, they are concerned but do not think/contemplate. For 5 years you keep thinking, who will defeat the BJP, who will defeat BJP? And at the time of the elections, you get on the bandwagon of whoever you think will defeat the BJP.”

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party State Vice President – Social Media Cell, Karthik Gopinath, in his official X handle, shared this video and wrote, “The Dravidian parties kept them as political pawns by telling them that BJP is the enemy of Islam, scare them, deceiving them. If the Muslims are truly aware, the Dravidian parties, Congress, and some doted allied parties will have to roll up the mat and leave.- Listen to Prashant Kishore’s speech.!!”.

This post comes against the backdrop of heightened tension between two Dravidian party leaders, engaged in a sharp exchange asserting themselves as the true protectors of Muslims, a significant development unfolded on 31 January 2024. Both DMK President and current Chief Minister MK Stalin and AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami shared posts on their official X handles blaming each other for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Stalin accused Edappadi of being responsible for the Bill becoming an Act, pointing out that only the AIADMK supported it. He argued that as a result, the act adversely affects Sri Lankan Tamils and Muslims. Edappadi countered his argument back and forth. However, it’s worth noting that both the act itself and the Home Ministry have unequivocally stated that it does not pose any threat to Indian Muslims.

During the Pran Prathishta ceremony, every major political party declined the invitation to attend the function. Various reasons were cited, including claims of leg pain by Edappadi and claims that the temple was not fully constructed. These refusals were primarily seen as a strategic move in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, demonstrating solidarity towards securing votes from minority communities.

In the past, there has been a pattern where both political parties take turns ruling the state and consistently advocate for the release of Muslim prisoners. In doing so, they overlook the severity of the actions committed, focusing instead on appeasement and securing votes for their respective vote banks. The committees will be formed, and reports will be presented; however, in the event of an unfavorable outcome, the blame will simply be shifted to the governor.
