Various nations have been helping India by supplying oxygen, medical equipment, aid etc with the surging number of  Covid-19 cases in the country. The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) on Monday, May 10, handled one more navy vessel ‘INS Kolkata’ which was carrying two 20 MT oxygen-filled in ISO tanks, two hundred oxygen cylinders packed in ten pallets of 10 MT and four 10 litres high flow oxygen concentrators from Kuwait.

The cargo was loaded on to the navy vessel at Shuwaikh Port in Kuwait, from where the vessel sailed out on May 5. INS Kolkata is one among the nine vessels under the Samudra Setu-II operation launched by the Indian Navy. The vessel was given the highest priority berthing in the port which arrived at 2 pm Monday. The oxygen and the medical equipment were donated by the Government of Kuwait to the Indian Red Cross Society in support of the nation’s healthcare and to overcome the current pandemic situation in the country.

INS Kolkata is the second vessel carrying medical aid to reach NMPT under the operation launched by the Indian Navy. Chairman, NMPT, Dr. AV Ramana, along with Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner, Dr. KV Rajendra, MLA Dr. Bharath Shetty, MLA Umanath Kotian and senior officers of the Port, navy and coast guard were present at the operation site to monitor smooth disembarking of the cargo off the vessel.

The chairman expressed the readiness of the port in such situations and every possible help towards the country’s fight against the pandemic. The liquid medical oxygen containers will be transported to the destinations decided by the state government. The port extended all its resources for berthing of the above vessel and handling of the medical oxygen and the oxygen concentrators free of cost as per the directives of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

A private hospital in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday asked permission from authorities to shut down its COVID-19 treatment facility, accusing a tehsildar of obstructing the supply of oxygen cylinders.

In a letter to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chauhan Hospital and Eye Care alleged that Tehsildar Preeti Jain had seized 15 of the 30 oxygen-filled cylinders from their facilities and accused her of causing severe hindrances in the day-to-day supply of oxygen required for the hospital.

Relating to this allegation on the tehsildar by the Agra hospital, a video has also surfaced on social media, in which the tehsildar can be seen preventing citizens from directly picking up oxygen cylinders from a plant in the Tedi Bagia area.

“I, along with my family members, touched her feet many times and requested to let us go, but our requests were not heard and we were asked to leave the spot,” said Mohan Verma, a relative of a patient, accusing Preeti Jain of being high-handed in her dealings with the public.

When contacted, Jain said that she was “trying to prevent any panic among the public and avoid damage to the oxygen plant facility”.

“I was asking family members of patients to wait outside the oxygen plant and then they would be given a cylinder. But they did not listen to me and entered the oxygen plant premises,” she said.

In a very humane gesture, Australian cricketer, and of the best fast bowlers, Pat Cummins has contributed $50,000 to PM Cares Fund. In a tweet sent out by Cummins from his official handle, he said, “India is a country I have come to love dearly over the years and people here are some of the warmest and kindest I have ever met.”

“As players, we are privileged to have a platform that allows us to reach millions of people that we can use for good. With that in mind, I have made a contribution to the “PM Cares Fund”, specifically to purchase oxygen supplies for India’s hospitals,” said Cummins. “I encourage my fellow IPL players — and anyone else around the world who has been touched by India’s passion and generosity — to contribute. I will kick off with $50,000,” he further said. Cummins, however, said in a statement he posted on Twitter that he has been told that the Indian government “is of the view that playing the IPL while the population is in lockdown provides few hours of joy and respite each day at an otherwise difficult time for the country”.

The money given by Cummins is “specifically to purchase oxygen supplies for India’s hospitals”. Cummins is one of the biggest stars in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Many people with corona infection are getting admitted at the Corona Special Ward of Vellore Government Hospital every day. On April 20th, the hospital reported the death of seven people for various reasons. However, Tamil news channels alleged that seven people died because of the scarcity of oxygen cylinder.

According to Collector Shanmugasundar, who went to the scene and conducted an investigation, seven people died for different reasons, including heart failure. He said, “the news that the corona patients have died due to lack of oxygen is completely false.  The patients were not transferred to any other hospital and that the oxygen pipeline maintenance was routine. Oxygen maintenance work has nothing to do with death.”

Manivannan, the deputy director of the district health services, said, “ All seven had recovered from the corona infection earlier and they may have died of complications such as heart disease later. No one has died due to lack of oxygen.”

The incident was misreported by Sun News, which said that the patients died due to a lack of oxygen. Even after Collector Shanmugasundaram’s report, Sun News, which had misreported the news, did not delete the video.

Sun News is part of Sun Network, owned by Kalanidhi Maran of Karunanidhi family which is the largest corporate media conglomerate in the country.

Many netizens lashed out at Sun News for resorting to fear mongering by peddling fake news at such trying times. Journalist Sandhya Ravishankar, criticized the irresponsible behaviour of the Tamil news media in instilling fear of an oxygen cylinder scarcity.
