Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday announced that a night curfew will be imposed between 10 pm to 5 am in seven district centres of the state, along with Manipal, from April 10 to 20.

The move comes amid the alarming rise in the Covid-19 cases in the country. Earlier, Delhi and Maharashtra too had imposed night curfew to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“Night corona curfew between 10 pm to 5 pm every day, from April 10 to 20, will be imposed in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Tumakuru, Udupi-Manipal cities. It will be applicable in district centres”, Yediyurappa said.

The CM made the announcement after attending a video conference chaired by PM Narendra Modi and other Chief Ministers aimed at a review of the Covid-19 situation in India.

He also asked the people of Karnataka to wear masks, maintain social distancing and not gather in large numbers at a place. Yediyurappa added that the night curfew is on a trial basis and requested citizens’ cooperation in controlling the spread of Covid-19.

The night curfew also comes at a time when employees of the Karnataka Road Transport Corporation are on a strike demanding better pay.

Following the footsteps of Maharashtra, the Delhi government has imposed a night curfew that will be effective between 10 PM and 5 AM, until the 30th of April. This is in lieu of the rising cases of COVID-19, which has recently crossed 1 lakh in India.

Those going for vaccinations or travelling interstate will be required to carry an e-pass, but there will be no stopping of traffic. Vehicles carrying essential services and retailers will be provided with special passes to travel in curfew hours. This will include grocery stocks, vegetables, milk and medicines. Media and journalists will be granted separate passes.

“As per the current situation, we are not considering imposing a lockdown. We are closely monitoring the situation and such a decision will only be taken after due public consultation,” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told reporters.

The night curfew proposal had been under consideration for quite some time now since the national capital had been witness to a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases over the last few days. 3548 new cases were reported on Monday, which took the overall cases to 6,79,962 in the NCR. Delhi reported over 3500 cases for the fourth consecutive day.

Fears over the mutant coronavirus strain having found its way here from the United Kingdom have forced the Karnataka government to impose a night-time curfew across the state.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced that the night curfew will be enforced starting today (December 23), from 11 PM to 5 AM, until January 1. (The earlier duration of the night curfew – beginning December 23 until January 2, from 10 PM to 6 AM has been subsequently revised)

The Chief Minister requested the public to cooperate to contain this new coronavirus strain. He said that the decision to impose night curfew was taken after inputs from the Centre and the technical advisory committee. It is also mandatory now for all international passengers travelling to Bengaluru or Mangaluru international airports to secure a RT-PCR negative certificate 72 hours in their host nation prior to departure.

The Health Minister Dr. K. Sudhakar said that no festivities and functions will be allowed after 10 PM. He added that about 2,500 people travelled from the UK to Karnataka from November 25 to December 22, and that they had all been traced.

The Maharashtra government imposed a night curfew in municipal areas in the state on Tuesday. The decision to impose night-time curfew by these states comes despite the NITI Aayog saying that the mutant strain was no cause for panic.
