The Income Tax Department on Tuesday informed the Madras High Court that it would initiate appropriate legal action against Ramanathapuram Member of Parliament K. Navas Kani based on the material available before it regarding allegations of suppression of income and misrepresentation.

The submission was made before the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan during the hearing of a petition filed by advocate K. Venkatachalapathy seeking a direction to the Income Tax Department to take action against the MP.

Recording the department’s submission, the bench observed that the pendency of the petition would not in any way hinder the authorities from initiating proceedings in accordance with law.

In his petition, Venkatachalapathy stated that Navas Kani had served as the Member of Parliament from the Ramanathapuram constituency between May 2019 and May 2024 and had subsequently been re-elected to the 18th Lok Sabha for the 2024–2029 term.

The petitioner said the MP had filed affidavits before the Election Commission of India in both the 2019 and 2024 elections disclosing details of his movable and immovable assets, sources of income and family information.

According to the petition, a comparison of the affidavits showed a steep rise in the MP’s assets that was disproportionate to his declared sources of income. The petition stated that the MP’s declared earnings consisted of his parliamentary salary, rental income and salary received as a director of a private company, while his wife’s declared income was limited to rental earnings.

The petitioner further submitted that an analysis of the financial disclosures indicated that the total net surplus available for investment by the MP and his family between 2019 and 2023 amounted to only ₹5.74 lakh after accounting for taxes, personal expenditure and loan repayments.

Despite this, the petition claimed that the MP and his family had acquired movable and immovable assets worth ₹20.84 crore during the same period.

The petitioner argued that the disparity between the declared income and the growth in assets suggested possible misuse of official position, misappropriation of public funds and concealment of actual income, which he said warranted investigation and legal action.

The Income Tax Department informed the court that it would proceed with action based on the available material, following which the bench recorded the submission and disposed of the matter while noting that the petition would not obstruct the department from taking further steps.

Former AIADMK minister Sellur Raju has accused Ramanathapuram MP Navas Kani of fueling the controversy surrounding the Thiruparankundram hill dargah issue. Speaking to reporters, Raju claimed that the situation escalated only after Navas Kani visited the site and conducted an inspection. He also alleged that the ruling DMK was attempting to shift the blame onto AIADMK.

The issue has sparked widespread debate in Tamil Nadu, prompting Madurai District Collector Sangeetha to issue a statement explaining the developments. She outlined the sequence of events that led to the controversy and confirmed that a peace meeting was held on 30 January 2025 under the chairmanship of the Thirumangalam Revenue Commissioner. Representatives from various parties attended the meeting, where all except the AIADMK delegate agreed to maintain the existing worship practices and prevent external interference.

Following the district administration’s statement, AIADMK leaders, including Rajan Chellappa, Sellur Raju, and R.P. Udayakumar, submitted a formal petition to District Collector Sangeetha, demanding that the report be withdrawn. Addressing the media, Raju insisted that the controversy gained prominence only after MP Navas Kani’s visit and accused the DMK government of negligence in handling religious matters.

“The DMK government takes action only after incidents escalate. There has never been a religious conflict in Madurai before, but now the District Collector is being made a scapegoat,he alleged. He further asserted that AIADMK, having governed Tamil Nadu for 31 years, would abide by any court ruling on the matter.

Raju also criticized Navas Kani, who chairs the Waqf Board, stating that he had no reason to conduct a direct investigation into the matter. He said, He is a representative of the people. It has become such a big issue because he got involved in it. So many Waqf Board heads have come, have they gone there in person to inspect?AIADMK leaders have warned that if the District Collector does not withdraw her statement, they will seek legal recourse.

Senior BJP leader H. Raja has been booked for allegedly making statements that could incite religious conflict. The case was registered at the Subramaniapuram police station following his speech at the protest organized by Hindu organizations in Madurai on 4 February 2025.

Earlier, following Hindu Munnani’s announcement of the protest on 4 February 2025, Madurai District Collector Sangeetha had imposed Section 144 for two days. Despite the prohibitory orders, BJP and Hindu Munnani sought permission to hold a protest under the banner “Let’s Save Thiruparankundram Hill.”

After repeated requests, they filed a petition in the Madurai bench of the High Court, which granted them permission to protest at 5 PM on the designated day in the Palanganatham area of Madurai.

Several Hindu Munnani leaders and BJP members were arrested as a preventive measure on 4 February 2025

Thousands of people participated in the demonstration, during which H. Raja allegedly made remarks that could disrupt communal harmony. Subsequently, a case against him under four sections of the law for “attempting to provoke religious tensions”.

On the other hand, DMK-ally IUML MP Navas Kani who is also the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board went with his supporters who had non-vegetarian biryani at the foothill of the temple hill on 22 January 2025, drawing widespread outrage for violating the sanctity of the site. In a video that was shared on social media, he can be seen intimidating police officials to allow them to have the non-vegetarian biryani that they have brought with them.

No case was filed against the Islamists for provoking Hindus.

After last-minute approvals and conditional permission for the massive protest to protect Thiruparankundram Hill led by Hindu Munnani, the protest saw large numbers of people gather and show support for the cause.

Several Hindu Munnani leaders and BJP members were arrested as a preventive measure on 4 February 2025 as BNS 163 or Section 144 was imposed for two days in the district.

Among the speakers who spoke at the protest were H Raja, BJP national secretary who launched a scathing attack on the DMK government in Tamil Nadu and shredded their facade into pieces.

He began his speech by saying, “They placed me on house arrest since this morning. They delayed by 40 minutes after the court order in an attempt to prevent me from coming here.”

He continued, “I tell the Taliban government led by MK Stalin in Tamil Nadu, the evil anti-Hindu government, this is what happened in Uttar Pradesh too. Due to this the enemies cannot come to power in Uttar Pradesh. The same will happen here too. I warn the anti-Hindu evil mob that is roaming around to divide Thiruparankundram, the first of the Arupadaiveedu/Abodes of Lord Muruga. Was it the Murugan temple or the dargah that came first in Thiruparankundram? Why is there a problem only now? No one should forget that whenever the DMK comes, there is an administration that is against the Hindu people. The anti-Hindu government and the police department must answer this question. As a precaution, we should record the words used by the police when they arrested us and file a police report against each of them in every district. Who can issue 144 order? Magistrate, executive magistrate, and collector. Madurai Collector has issued 144 prohibitory orders. How is this order valid for Chennai, Karaikudi, and Tiruppur? The authority of the District Collector is valid only within this Madurai district. If the police department is arresting us living outside the district and placing us under house arrest, it is against Article 21 of the Constitution – against the fundamental rights of a citizen. It is our duty to take these policemen to court. This must be a final lesson for them. Don’t touch Hindus. When you see Navaskani, your legs tremble, shameless gang. Navaskani’s henchmen are in power in Tamil Nadu.”

He added, “At least 5 lakh people would have gathered here for this protest. Thousands of members of Hindu organisations have been imprisoned. There was a Kashi Vishwanath temple on the Thiruparankundram hill even before Sikandar was born. I just had d darshan of the deity. Why did Sikandar go up the hill? No one is living up the hill. Today they say they are going to the dargah. There was no dargah then. Then why did they go? People say in the village that Sikandar went to the hill to demolish the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Is there a dargah for someone who went to demolish a Hindu temple? Government documents state that Sikandar’s grave is in Goripalayam.

If that is the case, isn’t the Dargah on Thiruparankundram Hill a fake? Isn’t it a plan to usurp the first abode of the six abodes of Lord Murugan? At this time, if we Hindus are not united, they will destroy our Tamil God Murugan. Who has the right to take over the first of the six abodes?”

Going back in history to cite an example, Raja said, “In India, in 1942, Muhammad Ali Jinnah put forward the demand for Pakistan. In 1944, a conference was held asking for partition. In that speech, Jinnah said ‘Either concede Pakistan or face civil war.’ At that time, our legal expert and father of the constitution, Bhimrao Ambedkar very clearly put forth his comments. He said, “Conceding Pakistan will not solve this threat to civil war.” Even if Pakistan is separated, the civil war will not end. That is what is continuing now. That is why today, Navas Kani is trying to incite the Hindus and went up the hill with a goat and a chicken. If this is not nipped in the bud, we will have a huge price to pay. In court, the government said that the ban was imposed so that it would not be like Ayodhya. This is the beginning. The Ayodhya war has started in Thiruparankundram, the first abode of Lord Murugan. In this struggle, we will end the Taliban government in Tamil Nadu. The 2026 elections have been marked as the auspicious time for that. Let us remain steadfast in this resolve. Let us show Hindu unity to the world,” H Raja concluded.

The Madras High Court has dismissed a petition seeking to quash an election violation case against Ramanathapuram MP Navaskani of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and six others.

The case dates back to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, during which Navaskani, who was contesting from the Ramanathapuram constituency on an IUML ticket, and others were accused of campaigning in the Kamuthi area using a vehicle without obtaining the required permission from the election officer. The Kamuthi police had registered a case against them for this alleged violation.

Subsequently, Navaskani and six co-accused filed a petition in the Madras High Court, seeking the dismissal of the case pending in the Ramanathapuram court. The petitioners claimed that the charges were politically motivated and demanded a stay on the trial proceedings.

The petition was heard by Justice P. Velmurugan, who ruled that there was sufficient prima facie evidence to proceed with the case. Consequently, the court dismissed the petition, allowing the case to continue in the trial court.

After MP and DMK ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) member Navas Kani, who also holds the position of chairman of the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board, shared a controversial social media post showing Muslims eating non-vegetarian food near the temple entrance at the foothills of Thiruparankundram Hills, there have been calls for boycotts of ST Courier, a company he co-owns, along with intensified scrutiny over Waqf Board claims to the sacred Hindu site, amid allegations of hawala transactions and illegal activities by his associates.

In a social media post on 22 January 2025, Ramanathapuram MP Navas Kani via his official x account stated, “We went to Madurai today to conduct a field inspection regarding the Sikkandar hills Dargah issue. We met the Madurai City Police Commissioner and stressed that steps should be taken to ensure that all people can visit the Dargah in harmony and without any problems, just as they did in the past. We have also spoken to the District Collector in this regard. As an example of harmony, there is a Dargah and a Kashi Vishwanathar temple there. People of all religions visit the Dargah. Therefore, we have urged that all steps be taken quickly to resolve these problems without causing unnecessary inconvenience to the people who visit there.”

He further said “When we spoke to the Police Commissioner in this regard, he explained that there is no ban on carrying food, but are discussing about the possible ban on carrying goats and chickens. After the Police Commissioner said that there is no ban on carrying cooked non-vegetarian food, people took cooked non-vegetarian food and ate it. All the restrictions will be removed soon and all steps will be taken to ensure that people can visit the Dargah without any difficulty, as they did in the past.”

In this controversial social media post, he shared photos of individuals eating non-vegetarian food at the foothills of the sacred Thirupparankundram Hills. This statement, along with the image, has sparked significant outrage, with critics accusing Kani of intentionally provoking religious tensions in the region.

Hindus Call For Boycott Of ST Courier

Incidentally, Navas Kani is also one of the directors of a popular courier company in Tamil Nadu, ST Courier. He runs this company with his elder brother Ansari.

Hindus who noticed the wantonly inflammatory post made by Navas Kani called for the boycott of ST Courier. Here are a few netizen reactions.

Tada Rahim, Indian National League (INL) leader, accused Navas Kani of indulging in hawala transactions.

Background

The sacred Hindu site of Thirupparankundram Hills is facing growing tension, with controversial actions by a Muslim politician fueling divisive rhetoric. Indian Union Muslim League member and Ramanathapuram MP Navas Kani, who also serves as the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board, has claimed that the dargah at the hilltop is Waqf property. This statement has sent shockwaves through the region and intensified existing tensions.

This development is part of a series of incidents that have strained relations between Hindus and Muslims, who had previously lived in harmony. Some Islamists groups have been attempting to assert their rights to conduct animal sacrifices at the hilltop, furthering their claims that the entire Thirupparankundram Hills should be recognized as Sikkandar Hills.

The situation escalated on 27 December 2024, when Madurai police intervened to detain a group of Muslims family attempting to bring goats and roosters to the hilltop dargah for ritual sacrifice. Syed Abu Dahir, a 53-year-old from Malaiyadipatti in Rajapalayam, arrived with his family and animals for the ceremony but was stopped by authorities at the base of the hill. Police informed them that bringing livestock up the hill was prohibited, which led to a protest by over 20 local Muslims at the foot of the hill in solidarity with the family.

The following week, on 5 January 2025, another large group of Muslim protesters gathered at Thirupparankundram Hills, demanding permission to offer prayers at the mosque located at the top. When the police denied their request, tensions escalated, leading to a brief scuffle and the detention of the protesters.

On 17 January 2025, during the Santhanakoodu Festival at a nearby dargah, social media posts began circulating about an upcoming “Equality Feast” (Samabanthi Bhojan) on 18 January at the hilltop dargah, where goats and roosters were allegedly to be sacrificed. Fearing communal unrest, police set up barricades and conducted searches to prevent the transportation of livestock to the hill. When the dargah Jamath was informed that animal sacrifices were not allowed, protests broke out. Members of the Jamath, along with other Muslim protesters, clashed with the police, causing further disruptions.

The situation was exacerbated by the involvement of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), an ally of AIADMK and a group linked to the banned terror outfit PFI. These elements are believed to be behind the attempts to conduct animal sacrifices at the sacred Thirupparankundram Hill.

Furthering tensions, on 21 January 2025, DMK Manapparai MLA Abdul Samad was accused of conducting an illegal survey around the temple with intentions to gain control of the hill. On the same day, IUML member and Ramanathapuram MP Navas Kani was seen giving an interview near the Thirupparankundram Hills. When asked whether the dargah at the hilltop was under the Waqf Board, Kani confirmed, “Yes, it is under the control of the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board,” further heightening tensions in the area.
