A video of a group of men offering namaz just outside the entrance gate to Terminal 2 at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has sparked a debate, putting a spotlight on the Karnataka government’s own guidelines for religious activities in public spaces.

The incident, which occurred near Gate 3 in the terminal’s drop-off area, shows the prayer proceeding with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel stationed nearby. The visual quickly went viral on social media, drawing public attention to the use of a high-security airport zone for a religious gathering.

Sources at Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) confirmed the authenticity of the video but clarified that the prayers were offered outside the main terminal gate, in a public access area. They also pointed out that the airport already has a multi-faith prayer room inside the terminal, accessible to passengers of all religions. BIAL has so far declined to issue an official comment.

An officer from the KIA Police Station stated that no formal complaint had been received regarding the incident and added that the location technically does not fall under their direct jurisdiction.

A Question of Rules and Consistency

Priyank Kharge had formally urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to impose a ban on all activities conducted by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in government institutions and public premises across the state. In a letter dated 4 October 2025, Kharge contended that such activities go against India’s unity and the constitutional spirit.

Calling for firm government action, Kharge urged that a ban be imposed on all RSS activities, whether under the name of ‘shakha’, ‘sanghik’, or ‘baithak’. He specified that the ban should cover government schools, government-aided schools, public playgrounds, parks, temples under the Muzrai Department, sites under the Archaeology Department, and all other government premises.

The namaz incident has reignited discussion on the state’s own rules for public gatherings – rules which Minister Priyank Kharge himself had recently cited in a separate context. Kharge had emphasized that government guidelines require prior permission for any religious activity or gathering held on public or government property.

However, applying that same logic to the current incident raises several questions:

How did a group of people manage to perform prayers in a restricted airport security zone? Did they have clearance from authorities?

Why were security personnel, tasked with maintaining protocol, merely bystanders during the act?

If the rule of prior permission applies universally, does it extend equally to all religious practices in public or sensitive spaces?

Minister Kharge had earlier said, “Airports already have prayer rooms for all religions. If someone wants to pray, they can do it there.” His own statement exposes the irony of the current situation: when designated spaces already exist, what justifies performing prayers in active public areas, especially under the watch of central security forces?

A driver-cum-conductor employed with the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has been suspended after a video surfaced showing him offering namaz inside a government bus while on duty. The incident reportedly occurred on 30 April 2025 during a scheduled service from Hangal in Haveri district to Vishalgad, Maharashtra.

The driver, who belongs to the Hangal depot, was seen in the video offering prayers from a passenger seat inside a packed bus. The footage, allegedly recorded by passengers, quickly went viral on social media, prompting official action. Some passengers were also seen verbally complaining about the incident to authorities.

Following the circulation of the video, NWKRTC’s Haveri Divisional Controller, Vijaykumar G, issued a suspension order against the driver. NWKRTC Managing Director Priyanga M said she became aware of the incident on Wednesday night and immediately directed the suspension of the staffer pending an enquiry. Authorities are currently verifying whether the driver stopped the bus specifically to perform the prayers and whether it caused inconvenience to passengers.

NWKRTC, which is an arm of the state-run Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), operates bus services in nine divisions across northern and western Karnataka. The managing director emphasized that while the right to practise religion is respected, operational duties must not be disrupted by personal religious activities.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy confirmed the suspension and reiterated that religious practices while on duty would not be tolerated. He stressed that Karnataka’s public transport system has earned a reputation for being efficient and passenger-friendly, and incidents like these could undermine that image. He directed the NWKRTC headquarters in Hubballi to ensure that such conduct is not repeated.

The divisional controller described the incident as a clear breach of conduct and confirmed that disciplinary proceedings are underway. Passenger complaints regarding the driver’s actions have been officially recorded as part of the investigation.

The Hindu Munnani has lodged a formal complaint with the Pollachi Deputy Collector and the District Education Office, demanding action against the headmistress of the government high school in Diwanshah Pudur. The complaint centers on the headmistress allowing Friday Namaz (prayers) to be conducted on school premises, which the complainants argue undermines the secular environment of the school attended by students from diverse religious backgrounds.

In recent weeks, it has been reported that Friday prayers have been regularly held at the school, raising concerns among local advocates. The headmistress claimed that she only authorized the prayers for one week and was unsure if they had continued. This response has drawn criticism, as the school serves a varied student population, and such practices could be perceived as preferential treatment, potentially leading to religious discord and mental distress among students.

In light of these concerns, officials from the Hindu Munnani Youth Front have emphasized that the continuation of these prayers may negatively impact the school’s atmosphere. They have submitted a petition to the District Deputy Collector and the District Education Officer, urging the discontinuation of Islamic prayers and calling for accountability regarding the headmaster’s unclear handling of the situation.

Once again, self-styled fact-checker Mohammed Zubair has been exposed for spreading a false narrative, seizing the chance to stoke tensions between Muslims and Hindus.

On the night of 16 March 2024, international students from various countries such as Africa, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan, who are enrolled at Gujarat University, reported incidents of physical assault, stone-throwing, and vandalism. These attacks occurred while the students were observing Ramazan Taraweeh prayers in a designated area within their hostel, A-Block.

The students were offering Namaz in an open area when questioned by around 25 Hindu students about the location’s suitability. This led to an altercation, escalating into a clash where stones were thrown, and rooms vandalized, causing injuries. Some students sustained injuries and are presently receiving treatment at SVP Hospital.

Two foreign students, one from Sri Lanka and the other from Kazakhstan, reportedly sustained injuries. The City Police Commissioner reported swift police response and ongoing scrutiny of videos capturing the incident.

Reports say that foreign students had been using a wall and stage as an open mosque, where Arabic script was displayed. Congress and AIMIM expressed support for the foreign Muslim students involved, with AIMIM sharing videos from their perspective, escalating communal tensions. Authorities including the Vice Chancellor and investigative teams are addressing the situation, with a state-level meeting convened to further address the matter.

As is his custom, he manipulated the incident to suit his agenda, altering the video to craft a biased portrayal suggesting Hindu students attacked Muslim students during prayers.

This post rapidly disseminated, causing individuals, news media and political figures to accept its validity and propagate it through their social media accounts.

However, contrary to the fabricated narrative, the true sequence of events unfolded on 16th March 2024 at the Gujarat University hostel, where a confrontation erupted between local and foreign students. This altercation resulted in the destruction of property, including laptops, AC units, and other belongings in room number 23 of the ‘A’ block, as well as damage to vehicles parked outside. The incident transpired around 10 PM, leading to the filing of a police report at 12:45 AM, following a complaint from the hostel’s security personnel.

The Gujarat University hostel houses approximately 300 foreign students from countries such as Afghanistan, various African nations, Sri Lanka, and others. Among these, 75 students reside in the ‘A’ block. On the 16th of March, some of these students were engaged in offering Namaz in an open area within the hostel grounds. However, a group of approximately 25 Hindu students raised objections to their choice of location, arguing that the ground was a public space and not designated as a mosque or madrasa. In response, an Afghan student named Harun Afghani approached and slapped a Hindu youth, sparking the initial altercation which rapidly escalated into a clash. During the confrontation, stones were thrown, and rooms were vandalized, resulting in property damage and injuries to several students.

The City Police Commissioner stated that law enforcement reached the scene within ten minutes of the incident. Additionally, he noted that several videos depicting the confrontation, including a significant slap, are currently being examined closely. Investigations have unveiled that foreign students recently misused a wall and stage, converting them into an unauthorized mosque. The wall bore Arabic script stating ‘Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim’ (In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), serving as a place where groups of foreign students gathered for Namaz prayers five times a day.

Additionally Ahmedabad Commissioner of Police GS Malik said, “Around 300 foreign students study in Gujarat University and around 75 foreign students stay in A Block (Hostel). Yesterday, at around 10:30 pm a group of students were offering Namaz. Around 20-25 people came and asked them why they were offering Namaz here & should instead read it in the Masjid. An argument broke out between them, stones were pelted and their rooms were vandalized by the people who came from outside…Police took swift action & FIR has been registered against 20-25 people…Action will be taken against those involved in this…One person has been identified. Law & order situation is under control now…Two students from Sri Lanka & Tajikistan are admitted to the hospital

As online users grew increasingly upset with Mohammed Zubair, a fact-checker known for promoting biased narratives, his reports were accused of fueling communal tension and quickly became a top trending in India topic under #ArrestZubair. It’s worth mentioning that Zubair has previously faced criticism for his role in sparking tensions and advocating for the arrest of Nupur Sharma through provocative propaganda.

BJP leader CTR Ravi shared a video of a group of women doing Sankeertane at an airport while they were waiting to board their flight to Ayodhya. Several women seemed to have joined in the singing and this was done peacefully without causing disturbance to any other people there.

Alleged fact-checker Mohammed Zubair soon came to grab the spotlight and posted a comment on the video. He wrote, “According to BJP supporters, It’s a Public nuisance if a Muslim reads Namaz in some corner in the park or in an isolated place. But here”

Netizens School The Alleged Fact-Checker

Netizens called out the hypocrisy of Zubair and pointed out to him that the women were doing this without causing any disturbance to others, not obstructing movement.

Some also pointed out that Muslims have prayer rooms allocated for their prayers and Hindus are not given even that space.

Others even called out the false comparison – namaz is done 5 times a day while a bhajan, or kirtan is sung only rarely and is not something that Hindus do on a daily/regular basis.

Some other netizens called him out for the incorrect “fact” he mentioned. Muslims never did namaz in the “corner of a park”; there are several instances of them occupying the entire road and blocking traffic!

https://twitter.com/UddJaaPerindeyy/status/1754395029899235471

Some others even called him out saying Hindus do not bomb buildings!

It is noteworthy that the Tamil Nadu government recently conferred the Kottai Ameer Communal Harmony Award for “rendering various services to promote communal harmony” to the self-styled fact checker.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is also the Minister of Sports and Youth Development in his father’s cabinet has come out in support of Pakistani cricketer Muhammad Rizwan who had performed namaz in the middle of the stadium during the game, following which the crowd chanted Jai Sri Ram after India’s victory.

On Saturday (15 October 2023), during the India-Pakistan World Cup match at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, spectators enthusiastically cheered “Jai Shri Ram” as Pakistan’s wicket-keeper-batsman, Muhammad Rizwan, made his way back to the pavilion after getting out at 49 runs.

In light of this, DMK Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin came in support of the Pakistani cricketer saying that the treatment meted out to Pakistan players at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad was unacceptable.

Sports should be a unifying force between countries, fostering true brotherhood. Using it as a tool to spread hatred is condemnable. #IndiaVsPakistan“, he said.

On the 10th of October, Pakistan secured a victory against Sri Lanka in the ongoing 2023 World Cup. Following his remarkable century in that match, Muhammad Rizwan dedicated the win to the people of Gaza, expressing his gratitude towards the Indian spectators and the hospitality and support he received in Hyderabad. However, his involvement of political matters in the context of the game drew significant criticism, as it appeared to breach the ICC’s code of conduct, which strictly prohibits cricketers from making political and religious statements.

https://twitter.com/iMRizwanPak/status/1711992170394300793

Muhammad Rizwan, much like several of his fellow countrymen, has a reputation for intertwining politics, religion, and sports. He gained attention when he openly offered Namaz on the cricket field during the break in the match against the Netherlands, with his teammates waiting for drinks. This action was met with disapproval, particularly given the context of it happening in front of Indian spectators.

An ex-serviceman onboard the Swarna Jayanti Express was thrashed on Sunday. He was reportedly attacked after he started reciting Mantras to oppose the Namaz performed by a few passengers aboard the train. The train’s pantry car manager and other staff members are accused of the assault. A case has been filed in this respect at Madhya Pradesh’s GRP police station and the injured ex-serviceman was admitted to the hospital after the incident.

https://twitter.com/iamdesinari/status/1594886852347322368

On the day of the incident, the ex-serviceman Vilas Naik was travelling from Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin to Visakhapatnam. A few Muslim passengers were also on board train number 12804 in the same coach. Naik reportedly asked for the passageway to not be obstructed as he had to go to the toilet. However, the persons offering Namaz asked him to wait till the Namaz was over.

A video has now gone viral on social media in which Naik is seen narrating that the Muslim co-passengers had obstructed the passageway to toilets on both sides for Namaz and the Namaz on the common passageway was done 3 times before he decided to object. He added that he had to go to the toilet earlier too, but had to wait because the Muslim co-passengers were unwilling to let anyone pass during Namaz.

A report by Dainik Bhaskar stated that ex-serviceman Vilas Naik was assaulted on the train by the pantry car staff as he was chanting Mantras in protest of the Namaz being performed onboard the train which was impeding passenger movement.

“On Sunday, a group of individuals sat in the train aisle to offer Namaz. This was repeated three times. When I requested a way to use the toilet, I was turned back” Naik was quoted saying in the Dainik Bhaskar.

In response, he began reciting Mantras in protest. Meanwhile, the pantry staff arrived and asked Naik to move and not obstruct the passage. They began arguing with Naik when he questioned why chanting could not be done while Namaz could be read. Harvesh Singh, the pantry manager, then summoned his employees and assaulted Naik, as per Naik’s complaint.

The pantry manager has reportedly said that Naik injured himself. Muzakir Ahmed, who was travelling aboard the train, on the other hand, admitted to performing Namaz. He stated that Naik insisted on using the restroom when Namaz was being offered.

They were all dropped off at the GRP outpost of Betul station in Madhya Pradesh. According to the outpost in-charge NS Thakur, an FIR has been registered against the manager of the pantry car and his coworkers under sections 294, 322, and 34 of the IPC.

The Railway Protection Force’s Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Nagpur Division, acknowledged the incident in a press release. The train was delayed for around 18 minutes at Betul railway station. A case has been filed against the pantry car manager and his two vendors based on Naik’s accusation and the matter is being further investigated, according to the press release.
