N Ram, the ‘veteran journalist’ and chairman of The Hindu Group, and also a card-carrying Communist, recently delivered a scathing indictment of Indian television news during his interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire. With the air of a seasoned professor lecturing errant students, he catalogued its sins: sycophancy, biased coverage, lack of scrutiny, and a descent into becoming a propaganda machine. His analysis was sharp, his tone, dismissive. There’s only one problem: the mirror he so confidently holds up to “Hindi/national” media reflects a strikingly similar image in his own backyard – an image in which he is not a mere observer, but a central character.

His checklist of sins is precise. But this mirror he holds up to the Hind/national media reflects a damning image back at his own turf—the Tamil Nadu media space where Ram is not a critic, but an established pillar.

On Sycophancy and Nexus: The Pot Calls the Kettle Black

Ram scorns national media for cutting live to rallies with “sycophancy without a shadow of a doubt.” Where is this scrutiny for Tamil Nadu’s channels, which operate on a simple binary: fawning loyalty to the ruling DMK or slavish devotion to the opposition AIADMK?

The “nexus between big media houses and the government” he identifies in Delhi is a textbook definition of the Chennai media-political complex. To lament this nexus while being a central figure in a media group often perceived as leaning towards the state establishment is the height of selective outrage.

Guess who is TN CM Stalin’s walking partner? Well, you may have seen this image often.

On Failure to Criticize: A Local Silence He Chooses Not to Hear

Ram accuses national media of failing to challenge communal “dog whistles” and of being “soft on government, harsh on opposition.” In Tamil Nadu, the script is simply flipped when it comes to centre vs state and replicated when it comes to reporting on the state. The local media is often relentlessly critical of the BJP-led Centre, while the “purposeful interrogation” Ram demands for Narendra Modi is conspicuously absent for Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister.

He asks why the media did not attack the Election Commission’s “arrogant” responses. But where is his own outlet’s relentless crusade against the Tamil Nadu government’s own institutional opacities or allegations of corruption? The bias is for a different team, but the failure of scrutiny is identical.

On Ignoring People’s Issues: The Tamil Nadu Blackout

Ram laments that national media focused on “Modi vs Rahul” instead of “unemployment” and “education.” Yet, Tamil Nadu media is often dominated by the same political soap operas – AIADMK’s internal squabbles, film star entries, and caste calculations. Where is the relentless focus on the state’s own unemployment crisis or the quality of its social schemes? The drama is local, but the neglect of public issues is just as profound.

On Poor Debates and Lack of Analysis: A Tamil Translation of Tutu-Mein-Mein

The “tutu-mein-mein” shouting matches he derides have a perfect Tamil translation. Tamil news debates are spectacles of high-decibel theatrics, where little light is shed. Well, he can talk to his fellow partners at the Press Club and get better debates organised. And on his point that media did not analyze party manifestos, where is the forensic analysis in Tamil media on the fiscal feasibility of the state’s notorious freebie culture?

The Unasked Question: Why Does Ram’s Critique Stop at the Vindhyas?

Ram says Indian media functions as a “propaganda machine rather than independent media” and is about “manufacturing consent.” This is not a Hindi/national media phenomenon; it is exactly the same in his backyard too. The consent is just manufactured for a different political project.

The most poignant question for Ram is the one his entire lecture avoids: Why did his profound critique stop at the banks of the Yamuna? Why not closer home, near the Cooum?

A true champion of journalistic integrity would have the courage to turn the lens inward. Until he does, his words are not a diagnosis—they are a performance of selective sanctimony. He is quick to point out the “sycophancy” in his neighbor’s house while ignoring the identical “nexus” in his own.

N. Ram’s tirade against “propaganda media” is the height of irony — a sermon on virtue from the pulpit of hypocrisy. A lifelong DMK-Communist stooge masquerading as a moral guardian of journalism, he has whitewashing Stalin’s draconian regime while sermonising about media ethics. In spirit and substance, he is Goebbels of the Dravidian Model.

A social media post by The Hindu drew criticism after users accused the publication of hypocrisy over claims of journalistic neutrality.

The controversy began when The Hindu’s official X account shared a promotional video declaring, “When gossip is dressed up as news, it stops being journalism. Read, hear, and share news written by journalists.”

Shortly after, senior reporter Vijaita Singh reshared the post, adding, “Read news written by journalists, not party pracharaks.”

Her comment sparked sharp reactions from users who alleged that The Hindu was engaging in partisan posturing while claiming objectivity.

Several users highlighted that N. Ram, former Editor-in-Chief and current Director of The Hindu Publishing Group, has previously attended events organized by DMK and Communist-affiliated groups, questioning the paper’s claims of neutrality.

Responding to one such post, Vijaita Singh wrote, “The beauty of democracy — foreign agents can also speak their mind.”

Vijaita’s remark was interpreted by many as a possible (?) reference to her own employer, N Ram. Some users even joked that Singh had probably accidentally told the truth, while others praised her for her “bravery”.

It was also noteworthy that Vijaita Singh has blocked The Commune, a digital media outlet that reported on the exchange, preventing her from seeing their coverage on X.

The Hindu & Chinese Propaganda

It is noteworthy that over the years, The Hindu has drawn sustained criticism for functioning as a de facto mouthpiece of the Communist Party and a consistent amplifier of Chinese state narratives. Its editorial choices frequently echo Beijing’s geopolitical messaging while undermining India’s sovereignty, military, and foreign policy.

From publishing distorted maps of India and false defence reports to glorifying the Chinese Communist Party’s centenary and running paid Chinese advertorials, the newspaper has repeatedly aligned with China’s interests. Its coverage of the Galwan clash, BRI projects, and LAC tensions routinely foregrounded Beijing’s perspective while sidelining India’s.

By normalizing Chinese propaganda, publishing sympathetic pieces on the CPC’s “achievements,” and hosting the Chinese Ambassador at its Chennai office, The Hindu has positioned itself less as an independent Indian publication and more as a reliable amplifier of left-wing and Chinese state viewpoints.

Her remark drew sharp criticism from netizens, who accused the publication of partisanship.

Several users pointed out that the newspaper’s former Editor-in-Chief and current Director of The Hindu Publishing Group has been seen participating in events organized by communist-affiliated groups and political figures.

Many questioned the credibility of The Hindu’s claim to neutrality, seemingly asking her who the real party pracharak was now.

In the aftermath of a tragedy that claimed 41 innocent lives, one would expect India’s leading newspapers to champion accountability and justice. Instead, The Hindu, under the editorial leadership of N. Ram, has published a deeply troubling editorial titled “Flawed Order” that does more to shield the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu than to seek truth for the victims of the Karur stampede.

The editorial’s central premise that the Supreme Court erred in ordering a CBI investigation reveals a startling disconnect from both legal principles and ground realities. What The Hindu dismisses as a “flawed order” is, in fact, a necessary judicial intervention to restore public confidence in an investigation marred by political undertones, procedural irregularities, and credibility concerns.

Misreading the Court’s Necessary Intervention

The editorial’s central premise that the Supreme Court erred in ordering a CBI investigation reveals a startling disconnect from the facts. What The Hindu dismisses as a “flawed order” was actually a necessary judicial correction after senior Tamil Nadu police officials, including Additional Director General of Police Davidson Devasirvatham, held press conferences defending their conduct before any investigation could begin. When investigators become public advocates for their own innocence, the integrity of the entire process collapses.

The Supreme Court rightly observed that “the comments made before the media by top officers of the Police Department may create doubt in the minds of the citizenry on impartiality and fair investigation.” This isn’t a “gag order” as The Hindu claims, but common sense: you cannot credibly investigate yourself after publicly declaring your innocence. The editorial’s position suggests that state officials should be free to try their case in the media while simultaneously conducting an “impartial” investigation – a contradiction that undermines basic principles of natural justice.

Selective Legal Analysis and Cherry-Picked Precedents

The editorial’s invocation of the 2010 State of West Bengal case is particularly misleading. While correctly noting that the precedent warns against routine CBI transfers, The Hindu conveniently ignores that the same judgment affirms constitutional courts’ power to order CBI investigations when state police lack credibility. The Constitution Bench explicitly ruled that High Courts and the Supreme Court possess this power without state consent when circumstances demand.

The Karur case, with 41 deaths, allegations of conspiracy from both sides, rushed nighttime autopsies, and investigating officers publicly defending themselves, presents exactly the “exceptional circumstances” warranting such intervention. The Hindu’s selective quotation from this precedent, amounts to legal cherry-picking designed to support a predetermined conclusion rather than honest legal analysis.

Conveniently Ignoring Troubling Facts

Most revealing is what the editorial completely omits. It makes no mention of the medically questionable autopsies – 31 completed in just over six hours at a hospital with only 2-3 tables that fueled public suspicion. Medical experts consistently state that proper autopsies require approximately 2-4 hours per body. This procedural irregularity, combined with bodies being handed over for cremation by dawn, created legitimate questions about investigative thoroughness that The Hindu conveniently ignores.

The editorial also fails to address the fundamental mathematics of the autopsy controversy. Even with three tables and 22 additional doctors rushed in from neighboring districts, completing 31 detailed postmortems documenting cause of death, injuries, and chain of custody in just over four hours defies credibility. This silence on substantive factual concerns undermines the editorial’s claim to be defending “factual inquiry.”

The “Caged Parrot” Red Herring and Robust Safeguards

The Hindu dismisses the CBI as “a caged parrot of the centre,” recycling a phrase from a 2013 case. This rhetorical flourish ignores that the Supreme Court specifically addressed this concern by appointing a three-member supervisory committee headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Ajay Rastogi. This oversight mechanism, stronger than in most CBI transfers and including two IPS officers from outside Tamil Nadu, directly counters concerns about central government influence.

The supervisory committee possesses authority to “issue proper direction for the areas in which the investigation is required to be carried out” and review evidence “from time to time.” By dismissing the CBI transfer with a glib “caged parrot” reference while ignoring these robust safeguards, The Hindu reveals that its real objection isn’t about investigative independence, it’s about protecting the DMK government from scrutiny.

The editorial notes allegations that “one petitioner was unaware of the petition filed in his name” and “another litigant who abandoned his family years ago is not a real representative of a child victim”. While these allegations merit examination, they don’t undermine the Supreme Court’s fundamental rationale for transferring the case to the CBI. The core issue remains whether Tamil Nadu police, who publicly defended their actions through press conferences, could impartially investigate themselves. Notably, The Hindu applies rigorous procedural scrutiny here while remaining silent about the Madras High Court’s own overreach, where a single judge made sweeping allegations against Vijay’s TVK without making them a party to the proceedings. This selective concern reveals inconsistent standards.

Double Standards on Judicial Overreach

The editorial faults the Supreme Court for making “no mention of the TVK’s or leaders’ responsibilities” while simultaneously accusing the Court of pre-judgment. This contradictory logic ignores that the Madras High Court single judge, whom The Hindu doesn’t criticize had already pre-judged the case by declaring that Vijay and TVK leaders “absconded from the venue” and showed “no remorse” without making them parties to the proceedings.

The Supreme Court’s approach, focusing on structural impartiality rather than assigning preliminary blame, represents judicial restraint, not overreach. The Hindu essentially faults the Supreme Court for not doing what it criticizes the Court for allegedly doing: pre-judging responsibility before evidence is properly examined.

On August 17, The Hindu published a headline screaming that Indians are losing “trust” in the Election Commission. But what the newspaper deliberately concealed behind its sensationalism was a grossly flawed survey design and methodology that make its sweeping claims completely baseless.

The survey behind the headline wasn’t pan-India. It covered only six states—Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi—with 500 respondents per state. Assam and UP were given equal weightage, despite huge differences in population and demographics. These limitations were hidden in fine print, while the headline loudly claimed a nationwide truth. And the paper expected readers to take it at face value.

Far from a nationwide study, the survey covered only six states—Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi—with a limited sample size of 500 respondents per state. Assam and Uttar Pradesh were bizarrely given equal weight despite their vastly different populations, fatally compromising the results. The paper failed to disclose these critical limitations in its headlines or reporting, misleading millions of readers about the survey’s true scope.

The Hindu also ignored the religious makeup of these states, four of which have significant Muslim populations, a key factor that was nowhere acknowledged or analyzed. It did not question why these six states were chosen or scrutinize the sample design and weighting that remain undisclosed behind closed doors.

Even more damningly, The Hindu deliberately overlooked glaring contradictions in its own sourced data: while over 97% respondents in Assam and West Bengal reportedly have the necessary documentation for voting, 45% still fear “vote cutting.” This disparity was not investigated but instead presented uncritically as unquestioned truth.

On the very day The Hindu published this misleading story, Rahul Gandhi launched his Bihar Yatra with claims of “vote chori” (vote theft), leveraging the badly reported survey to fan political flames. The Hindu’s reckless amplification of the agenda without demanding transparency or verifying facts makes it complicit in spreading misinformation.

By failing its readers in this manner, The Hindu not only betrayed journalistic standards but encouraged distrust in democratic institutions without any credible basis. This is a shameful exhibition of irresponsible journalism, reducing a respected paper to a conveyor belt for unchecked narratives.

The Hindu owes its readers an explanation for why it amplified unverified claims from a flawed survey and chose to ignore critical context that would have told a very different story.

Dilip Mandal has sharply criticized The Hindu for irresponsibly reporting on the Lokniti-CSDS survey that claimed a loss of trust in the Election Commission. He pointed out the paper’s failure to highlight the survey’s limited scope, flawed methodology, and ignored contradictions in the data. Mandal condemned the newspaper for amplifying unverified claims without scrutiny, misleading readers, and fueling political narratives without demanding transparency from the survey agency. His critique highlights a severe lapse in journalistic standards and calls attention to media accountability in the face of politicized data.

A bombshell revelation by French intelligence has exposed China’s covert operation to discredit France’s Rafale fighter jets, an important part of India’s air combat strength.

China’s Embassy Campaign Against Rafale

According to classified French intelligence reports accessed by Associated Press, Chinese defence attachés were instructed to systematically undermine the Rafale’s combat reputation following India’s Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in 2025. Beijing allegedly mobilized its diplomatic missions to:

Spread doubts about Rafale’s performance
Chinese diplomats were directed to question the jet’s combat capabilities in meetings with foreign defence officials, citing Pakistan’s unverified claims of shooting down three Rafales during the 2025 conflict.

Lobby potential buyers to abandon French jets
Multiple nations considering Rafale purchases reported unusual pressure from Chinese officials, who suggested alternative Chinese or Russian aircraft instead.

Amplify Pakistan’s false claims
Beijing’s state media extensively circulated Islamabad’s disputed assertion of downing five Indian jets (including three Rafales), despite French confirmation of only three total Indian losses (1 Rafale, 1 Sukhoi, 1 Mirage 2000).

While China dismissed these allegations as “slander,” the timing raises disturbing parallels with The Hindu’s 2019 manufactured “Rafale scam”, raising suspicions of coordinated anti-India propaganda.

Did Chinese Mouthpiece ‘The Hindu’ Manufacture Fake News On Rafale In The Past?

Following this revelation, one cannot help but think if Chinese mouthpiece, The Hindu, under N Ram in 2019, was also a part of this psychological warfare against India’s national security interests?

How N Ram Orchestrated The “Rafale Scam”

In February 2019, just months before India’s general elections, The Hindu published a doctored Defence Ministry note that had the following “features”:

Cropped out Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s rebuttal
The excised portion showed Parrikar calling objections an “overreaction” and clarifying that PMO/French President’s office were merely monitoring progress—standard practice for inter-government deals.

Digitally erased critical stamps and serial numbers
Forensic analysis revealed the removal of a 24 November 2015 stamp that overlapped into the text area as well as the deletion of serial numbers that would prove document sequencing. In addition to this, the “RM” (Raksha Mantri) designation that would reveal Parrikar’s response, was also cropped.

Falsely claimed it was an “earlier version”
The Hindu asserted they published a preliminary draft, but the “missing” Defence Minister’s note was dated before their publication. Subsequent stamps (20 January 2016) proved later activity was deliberately hidden

The China Connection: Troubling Coincidences

The Hindu’s fake Rafale story surfaced in 2019 just as India negotiated defence deals with Egypt and Qatar—both later targeted by Chinese lobbying.

China’s alleged covert op to using China’s embassy operations is also making use of identical tactics – questioning Rafale’s performance and reliability.

Both campaigns served to undermine India’s defence credibility, benefit Chinese arms exports (J-20 fighters), empower political forces opposing military modernization.

N Ram’s Track Record

As a key petitioner in the Pegasus case and frequent critic of Modi’s defence policies, Ram’s role demands scrutiny. His 2019 article parroted Congress’ false ₹30,000 crore scam narrative despite Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar clarifying pricing wasn’t discussed in the cited note. It also ignored critical context, i.e, the “dissenting” Deputy Secretary (Air-II) had no role in negotiations.

It also aligned with geopolitical interests seeking to stall India’s military preparedness.

Chinese Mouthpiece For A Reason

Over the years, we have consistently seen The Hindu parrot China’s line. Even recently, Suhasini Haidar, one of the editors at The Hindu, demonstrated the publication’s loyalty to China, earning praise from Yu Jing, the spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, by promoting Lhasa, the religious and administrative capital of Tibet. This came when Haidar, as part of a media delegation from The Hindu, which trekked to Kailash Manasarovar in Tibet, lauded China’s developments in the region.

The publication has long been recognized as a media outlet that frequently adopts positions hostile to India, while aligning itself with China’s strategic interests. Over the years, The Hindu has solidified its reputation as a consistent promoter of narratives that undermine India’s sovereignty, national security, and internal stability. Whether covering border issues, defense matters, or domestic policies, the newspaper has often echoed adversarial views that align closely with China’s geopolitical agenda.

The Commune has published a compilation of 32 documented instances where The Hindu has either directly supported China’s stance or published content critical of India’s armed forces, democratic institutions, and sovereignty, often reflecting China’s voice in its narratives.

N. Ram, publisher of the 140-year-old The Hindu who hides façade of journalistic objectivity, long seen as a veteran voice in Indian media, now finds himself at the center of political speculation: the DMK is reportedly considering nominating him to the Rajya Sabha. It’s not a surprising development. For years, Ram has been less a neutral journalist and more a vocal mouthpiece for DMK propaganda — echoing the party’s positions, publishing Stalin’s op-eds, and attacking the Tamil Nadu Governor with near-synchronised precision.

Now, the line between newsroom and party war room is about to disappear entirely — with a Rajya Sabha seat as his reward.

Let’s take a look at how N. Ram could have manoeuvered his way to the ruling dispensation.

A Walking Companion, A Political Endorsement?

It was hard to miss Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s gushing 80th birthday tweet for Ram, “Wishing a happy 80th birthday to my walking friend and thinking companion, @nramind… He interrogates the news, questions power, and stands firm for press freedom.”

But what Stalin conveniently left out is this: N. Ram hasn’t so much “questioned power” as selectively interrogated it — provided it wears saffron. When it comes to the DMK, however, Ram’s journalistic rigor morphs into enthusiastic cheerleading.

From publishing Stalin’s NEET opposition essays verbatim to praising his speeches at communist party congresses, Ram has turned The Hindu’s op-ed section into a second-rate DMK press release archive. And now, the reward for his loyalty may just be a seat in the Rajya Sabha — a fitting culmination of years spent camouflaging partisanship as press freedom.

Press Freedom For Me, Not For Thee

Like a true leftist, N. Ram has been ‘vocal’ about India’s ‘slide’ on the Global Press Freedom Index — blaming the Modi government for a hostile media environment, raids on journalists, and suppression of dissent. On World Press Freedom Day, he amplified Stalin’s own performative concern. He wrote, “An influential voice for press freedom — and against authoritarian curbs and suppression:”

Yet, when DMK critics were jailed in Tamil Nadu for social media posts, Ram was curiously silent. Instead of questioning power in his own backyard, he offered cover — praising Tamil Nadu’s “credible” Tamil news media while ignoring the stifling of dissent within the state.

In an interview with BBC’s Stephen Sackur, praising TN “press freedom” he said, “There are still some exceptions. In the Indian languages, in Tamil Nadu, for example, where I come from, there are some perfectly credible television news channels, and maybe in West Bengal and other places as well.”

A Record Of Amplifying DMK’s Pet Causes

Ram’s bias isn’t subtle. Here’s a list of what he has amplified.

Glorified Stalin’s stance against the NEET exam with glowing commentary.

Championed resolutions undermining the role of the Tamil Nadu Governor, calling the Governor’s actions “childishness” and “cantankerous.”

Called Supreme Court rulings against the Governor a “historic victory” — not for the judiciary, but for Stalin personally.

Echoed DMK rhetoric that paints all opposition to their agenda as “chauvinism,” while painting Stalin’s own identity politics as “rational, intelligent, and principled.”

And when tax raids were conducted on Stalin’s own son-in-law ahead of the 2021 elections, Ram rushed to cry foul: “Outrageous misuse of agencies of state!” So much for objectivity.

Anti-India N. Ram

Let’s take a look at how The Hindu’s N. Ram has been blatantly anti-India. Be it doctoring documents relating to the Rafale deal or distorting India’s map by omitting Sikkim from it or peddling Pakistani propaganda amidst Operation Sindoor, The Hindu and N. Ram are responsible for peddling every single anti-India rhetoric.

Rafale

In the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Ram attempted to manufacture a Rafale “scam” aimed at discrediting the Modi government. On 8 February 2019, The Hindu published a selectively cropped defence ministry note to suggest internal opposition to the Rafale deal, portraying the Prime Minister’s Office as interfering in the process. What the report conveniently omitted was a handwritten note by then Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar calling the objections an “overreaction” and clarifying that both Indian and French leaderships were merely monitoring progress. ANI later exposed the full, unedited document, revealing that The Hindu had removed key portions, including date stamps and annotations, to mislead readers. When cornered, The Hindu claimed it published an earlier version of the note, a claim undermined by clear digital tampering.

Distorting India Map

The Hindu sparked fresh controversy with its 13 May 2025 edition after publishing a map of India that conspicuously excluded Sikkim. Featured in an opinion article about Catholicism in India, the omission triggered widespread backlash and accusations of anti-national bias.

In response, The Hindu issued an apology, citing a “data input error” and claiming the mistake had been corrected in its online and e-paper versions. However, critics remain unconvinced, pointing to the newspaper’s history of controversial reporting — including a previous, unverified claim that Indian Rafale jets were downed by Pakistan, which was later retracted.

Vijaita Singh’s Coverage of Manipur: Irresponsible And Inflammatory

Beyond the Kashmir-Pakistan narrative, The Hindu’s Vijaita Singh’s reporting during the Manipur ethnic conflict stands out for its recklessness. Since violence erupted in May 2023, her articles have repeatedly highlighted unverified claims, inflammatory statements, and misleading headlines that have only deepened the rift between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.

In March 2025, Singh quoted a protester who accused security forces of saying, “We are not Indians”—a claim that was later walked back by the protester themselves. Still, Singh chose to amplify the quote without context, potentially stoking anti-security sentiment in a state already teetering on the edge.

In January 2024, she authored a report claiming that “Meitei MLAs call for positive action,” which was later clarified by The Hindu itself to be factually incorrect. The resolution in question had not been passed exclusively by Meitei MLAs, as originally reported—an error with significant communal implications.

In another instance, Singh reported on Chief Minister N. Biren Singh skipping a North Eastern Council meeting, framing it as a rebuke of the central government. Once again, her narrative placed the state and Centre at odds during a period requiring collaboration and restraint.

Operation Sindoor: Amplifying Pakistani Propaganda

The latest controversy erupted following India’s precision counter-terror strikes, Operation Sindoor, targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. While the Indian Army emphasized the operation’s surgical nature, Pakistani media and propaganda networks immediately circulated false claims of retaliatory strikes and downed Indian jets.

Equally concerning was The Hindu’s now-deleted social media post falsely suggesting Indian jet crashes—a claim swiftly refuted by defense experts as mere fuel tank jettisoning. The post read, “Just In|At least three Indian jets have crashed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Akhnoor, Ramban, and Pampore areas, a government official told The Hindu, @vijaita reports.”

The publication’s quick deletion of the post, without clarification, only deepened suspicions of deliberate misinformation.

Pro-China The Hindu

The Hindu’ has long been recognized as an anti-Bharat media outlet. Both the publication and its journalists have repeatedly come under fire for publishing content that is not only openly hostile to India but also alarmingly aligned with China’s strategic interests. Over the years, the newspaper has solidified its reputation as a consistent mouthpiece for narratives that undermine India’s sovereignty, national security, and internal stability. Whether it’s border tensions, defense matters, or domestic policies, ‘The Hindu’ has habitually echoed adversarial positions—often mirroring China’s geopolitical agenda.

What makes this more dangerous is the blind and enthusiastic backing the paper receives from India’s liberal-left ecosystem. Despite clear evidence of its anti-national slant, this ideological cabal continues to defend and legitimize ‘The Hindu,’ enabling it to carry out its divisive agenda unchecked. Their uncritical support has only emboldened the newspaper to intensify its campaign against India’s national interest.

The Hindu published misleading stories like claiming three Indian fighter jets crashed in Kashmir (using images of fuel tanks as “evidence”), then quietly deleting the article.

The publication consistently echoed Beijing’s talking points on border disputes, portraying China’s military buildup positively, and downplaying Indian territorial concerns during LAC tensions and the Galwan clash.

They published multiple full-page Chinese government advertorials celebrating Communist Party milestones and China’s National Day, raising questions about editorial independence.

The Hindu was also seen praising China’s Belt and Road Initiative, defending Chinese military expansion in South Asia, and justifying authoritarian policies like religious crackdowns.

They have frequently criticized India’s foreign policy as weak while portraying China as a responsible global power and giving prominence to Chinese officials’ statements over Indian positions.

Additionally, the Chinese Ambassador’s 2022 visit to The Hindu’s headquarters highlighted the publication’s apparent closeness to Beijing.

From Leftist Publisher To Lawmaker?

For years, critics have accused The Hindu of harboring a subtle but consistent anti-India tilt in its editorial worldview — from whitewashing China’s actions to selectively reporting issues that align with Left-leaning narratives. Ram has personally backed stories that critics say have relied on dubious sourcing and narrative framing, particularly around Rafale and Pegasus. Now, with a likely Rajya Sabha seat in sight, the DMK may be about to formally reward one of their most faithful media amplifiers.

Loyalty Rewarded, Journalism Diminished

What we’re witnessing isn’t just another journalist entering politics. It’s the culmination of years of ideological convergence between N. Ram and the Dravidian model of politics — a worldview that sees the media not as a watchdog, but as a tool of cultural and political engineering.

As speculation builds over his potential nomination, the question isn’t just whether N. Ram will accept Stalin’s offer. The real question is: Was he ever outside the DMK tent to begin with?

The Hindu once again shared unverified information, falsely reporting that Pakistan successfully struck multiple Indian military targets—when in fact, no targets were hit. This follows a previous incident where the outlet claimed three Indian jets were downed, a narrative quickly amplified by Pakistani and international media before the tweet was deleted.

The social media post published by The Hindu read “Pakistan has hit several military targets in Srinagar, Bhuj, Chandigarh, Uttarlai, Ludhiana, and Falaudi on the intervening night of May 7, 2025 and May 8, 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press briefing on Thursday.

However, the media outlet silently deleted after official sources confirmed that it was false. Government of India has clearly said in an official statement that all of Pakistan’s attempts to hit specific places were successfully neutralized by the Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems.

Earlier on 7 May 2025, The Hindu had claimed that atleast three Indian jets crashed in Jammu and Kashmir sharing pictures which looked like AI-generated.

The report was subsequently deleted after widespread backlash, with users accusing the outlet of disseminating misinformation without proper verification. The deleted post reportedly suggested details that aligned with Pakistan’s attempts to distort the success of India’s counterterrorism efforts.

Concerns have been raised whether The Hindu is deliberately acting at the behest of ISI publishing such reports to push Pakistani propaganda.

The Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has highlighted Pakistan’s disinformation campaign, noting that state-affiliated accounts and media outlets have been circulating fabricated content, such as recycled videos and images, to mislead the public and undermine Operation Sindoor. The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit flagged multiple instances of such propaganda, including false claims of Indian military losses and staged victories by Pakistan.

Many have labelled The Hindu’s actions as irresponsible, accusing the newspaper of failing to uphold journalistic standards by not cross-checking sources before publishing.

While The Hindu had put a half-hearted apology for its May 7 false report, it has not not issued a public statement regarding the deletion of the latest post.

N Ram is known for peddling lies during the alleged Rafale scam – one of the famous lie he peddled was when his publication The Hindu published cropped and incomplete pictures of documents on the Rafale deal during the run-up to the 2019 general elections.

In an interview with BBC’s HARDTalk, Ram portrays a picture of a “stifled” media, passionately critiques the alleged decline of press freedom under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he conveniently overlooks his own publication’s history of biased reporting, selective narratives, and politically motivated journalism. Let’s dissect how Ram has been maintaining his one-sided leftist point of view all along that was exposed in this interview.

N Ram’s Hypocrisy on Press Freedom

N Ram lamented the decline of press freedom under Modi, but he conveniently ignored the fact that The Hindu, the publication he leads, has also been accused of bias and selective reporting. The Hindu is often criticized for its left-leaning editorial stance, which many argued was no less partisan than the so-called “Godi media” he now condemns.

Like a true DMK stooge, he praised TN media for being “credible”. He said, “There are still some exceptions. In the Indian languages, in Tamil Nadu, for example, where I come from, there are some perfectly credible television news channels, and maybe in West Bengal and other places as well.”

If Ram is so concerned about press freedom, why didn’t he speak out as forcefully when media houses were accused of bias during the Congress era? His selective outrage reeks of political vendetta rather than genuine concern for journalism.

Ram’s effusive praise for Rana Ayyub is telling. Ayyub has been peddling half-truths and sensationalism in her reporting. Her work on the 2002 Gujarat riots has been rubbished by the courts and relies on unverified sources. Responding to Sackur’s question on Ayyub, Ram said,
“Rana Ayyub is the bravest woman around the woman journalist I know, and she goes on, I got a message from yesterday that a new case, a first information report, has been ordered by a court against her writings. And she faces that threat, and yet she goes on showing that people like that can if you stand up. I think that’s the way to fight this this assault and there’s a repression. And she’s, I think, an extraordinary case. Fortunately, she’s able to write for The Washington Post and some other publications abroad. She’s respected, and I think people, we need people like that, and there are some others as well.”

By holding her up as a paragon of journalism, Ram reveals his own bias. Is he defending journalism, or is he defending a specific narrative that aligns with his ideological leanings?

The Pegasus Spyware Allegations: All Smoke, No Fire

Ram raised the Pegasus issue but admitted there’s no concrete proof that the Indian government used it to surveil journalists. This is a classic case of making sensational claims without evidence. When asked for proof, he says, “The proof is, I think there have been stories. This is the NSO group’s military great spyware, Pegasus, and I’m a petitioner in the Supreme Court of India. In fact, in the court, the government refused to confirm or deny that, had it acquired this spyware and so on, and it just and it just refused. The court could have compelled it, and we were disappointed it didn’t, but it set up a committee which then reported on it. It’s kept in a sealed cover.”

When pressed again for proof, Ram said, “There’s a strong suspicion, and there and other countries have investigated it. The New York Times did a story on this, pretty much indicating that this had been used. They’ve been, The Wire did investigations on this.”

If Ram is so sure about the government’s misuse of spyware, why hasn’t he produced any hard evidence? Instead, he hides behind vague suspicions and stories published in leftist rags like Washington Post and The Wire! This is not journalism; it’s fearmongering.

The “Godi Media” Smear

Ram’s use of the term “Godi media” (lapdog media) is a cheap shot aimed at discrediting media outlets that don’t align with his worldview. But what about the media houses that are openly critical of the government? Are they also “Godi media”? Or does the label only apply to those who don’t toe the leftist line? Ram’s hypocrisy is glaring. He fails to acknowledge that media bias exists on all sides, not just among those who support the government.

Ignoring the Role of Social Media

Ram praised ‘independent voices’ like Ravish Kumar and Dhruv Rathee, who have found success by peddling lies on YouTube. When
questioned that these “voices” have millions of subscribers, and nobody seems to be stopping them, Ram, flustered, replies, “They are trying to stop that. They’re struggling to see what can be done there. The new broadcast services bill was introduced there was opposition, so it’s been referred to a committee because the government has no majority, and maybe some of its allies have problems or qualms about it.”

Sackur calls India a noisy democracy and that voices like Ravish Kumar aren’t successfully stifled. Ram replies, “I fully agree with this, and I’d add Dhruv Rathee, who’s not a journalist, he was a sort of an educator on YouTube, and he then put out a frame, something that went viral, called, Is India a democracy? And then he had a sequel, and I believe, 50 million views.”

Ram has conveniently ignored the fact that these same voices on YouTube have been peddling misinformation and propaganda like him, is that why he endorsed them? If Ram is so concerned about disinformation, why doesn’t he call out the lies and half-truths spread by his ideological allies?

The Myth of Modi’s Authoritarianism

Ram accused Modi of incremental authoritarianism, but he provided no concrete examples of how this has stifled democracy. India remains a vibrant democracy with a free press, as evidenced by the fact that critics like Ram can freely express their views on international platforms like the BBC. If Modi were truly authoritarian, would Ram even be allowed to speak so openly? The reality is that India’s media landscape is more diverse and pluralistic than ever, and Ram’s doomsday predictions ring hollow.

Selective Amnesia on Congress Era

Ram’s criticism of the Modi government is rich, considering his silence during the Congress era. The Emergency of 1975-77, imposed by Indira Gandhi, was one of the darkest periods for Indian democracy and press freedom. Yet, Ram has been conspicuously quiet about the Congress’s authoritarian tendencies. His selective outrage suggests that his problem isn’t with authoritarianism per se, but with Modi specifically.

The Elite Media Bubble

Ram represents the old guard of Indian journalism—a privileged elite that has long dominated the media landscape. His criticism of Modi’s direct connection with voters through platforms like YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) reeks of elitism. Ram seems to resent
the fact that Modi has bypassed traditional media gatekeepers like him to communicate directly with the masses. It is not clear whether Ram’s real issue with press freedom or is it with losing his own relevance in the digital age.

The Disinformation Double Standard

Ram accused the BJP of being the primary source of disinformation, but he conveniently ignored the role of opposition parties and left-leaning media in spreading false narratives. From fake news about farm laws to exaggerated claims about communal violence, the opposition has been just as guilty of disinformation. Ram’s one-sided criticism exposes his partisan agenda.

It is an open secret that N Ram has nothing but contempt for the BJP and hatred for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he has still not come to terms that the Rafale fighter deal was legitimate and continues to peddle the lie.

This HARDTalk interview is a masterclass in selective outrage, hypocrisy, and ideological bias. While he poses as a defender of press freedom, his arguments are riddled with contradictions, unverified claims, and partisan smears. If Ram truly cares about journalism, he should start by holding himself and his ideological allies to the same standards he demands of others. Until then, his criticisms of the Modi government and the Indian media landscape will remain nothing more than the rantings of a disgruntled leftist clinging to a bygone era.

The recent days have been turbulent for the Carnatic music community, with both artists and enthusiasts facing a storm of controversy. The Madras Music Academy’s decision to honor left-leaning vocalist TM Krishna with the Sangita Kalanidhi award stirred up significant debate. In response, vocal duo Ranjani-Gayatri expressed their dissent by opting to withdraw from the upcoming conference, which is scheduled to be led by Krishna later this year.

Several notable musicians and artists joined the vocalist duo in their boycott. This includes Vedic scholar Dushyanth Sridhar, Harikatha exponent Smt. Vishakha Hari, vocalists Trichur Brothers, and Chitraveena Ravikiran, who decided to return his 2017 Sangita Kalanidhi award. Additionally, other prominent artists such as Palghat Mani Iyer’s family have also chosen to return the award in solidarity.

Following this, Music Academy President N. Murali wrote a letter to the sisters, expressing his disapproval. The intimidating letter to the sisters stated that their letter was “replete with unwarranted and slanderous assertions and insinuations verging on defamation, and its vicious tone against a respected senior fellow-musician.”

The Hindu’s N Ram (whose brother is the President of the Music Academy), wrote a scathing post on his social media handle to the sisters. He said, “Commend the firm and fitting response from The Music Academy and its President to the bigoted, casteist objections by a small coterie of set-up Carnatic musicians who can’t stomach the choice of an eminent, widely acclaimed, erudite, and articulate musician for the highest accolade in Carnatic music. If T. M. Krishna doesn’t deserve the Sangita Kalanidhi honour, then who does? And what explains Ranjani-Gayatri’s wild and scurrilous attack — charged with venom and demonstrable falsehoods — on Periyar Ramasamy (1879-1973), the father of the Self-Respect Movement in Tamil Nadu and a champion of women’s equality and rights? Who put them up to this?”

He also shared a few links to articles on the Sangita Kalanidhi Awards reported by The Hindu.

In response to N Ram, the sisters wrote,

“1. Please isolate venom & demonstrate falsehoods in our ‘notorious’ note to the Music Academy

2. Either you r part of the Periyar packaging factory or an ignorant believer

He called for killing of Brahmins, called the women of your house Prostitutes. Stop glorifying him”

Vedic scholar Dushyanth Sridhar also came out in support of the sisters in this regard, yet again. He wrote, “Sri Rama & Srimad Ramayanam is the very essence of #Bharata. I am ready to debate with references from works (both in #Tamil & #Sanskrit) of preceptors & composers (in #CarnaticMusic) and how they have venerated Sri Rama. The irony is Mr.

@nramind & EVR share the name of Sri Rama in their names and have never understood the ethos of this country. Kudos to @ranjanigayatri”

Earlier, TN BJP president K Annamalai and ADMK’s spokesperson voiced out their support for the vocalist sisters and all those who decided to boycott the conference.
