As the Tamil month of Margazhi began with lamp pujas and special rituals being observed in Vaishnavite temples in Tamil Nadu, a photograph posted by DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian on Instagram, in which she appeared dressed as Goddess Andal, drew criticism and sparked debate on social media.

She shared the photo with the caption, “Andal of the fertile fields of Puduvai, offered to Rangaraja the renowned Tiruppavai, a collection of verses, singing them with sweet melodies. She who offered a garland of verses and a garland of flowers, tell me, O radiant creeper who offered the garland after wearing it, O wearer of many bangles, who could graciously sing the ancient Pavai hymns—may you grant that this plea of mine, that you destined me for the Lord of Venkata, be fulfilled without fail. On this auspicious day of the month of Margazhi, when the moon is full, O fair-jeweled maidens, those of you who wish to bathe, come forth!”

Following the circulation of the image, Indu Makkal Katchi (IMK) leader Arjun Sampath issued a statement strongly condemning the DMK MP. Referring to the photograph, he criticised Thamizhachi for what he described as a contradictory public posture on Hindu beliefs.

In his statement, Arjun Sampath said that Thamizhachi, who is the sister of DMK MP and Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, had remained silent when Hindu deities were allegedly ridiculed but was now portraying herself in the guise of Goddess Andal. He alleged that the DMK MP had earlier associated herself with remarks such as “Sanatana Dharma should be eradicated” and comparisons of Sanatana Dharma to “mosquitoes, dengue, and malaria.”

Questioning her conduct, Sampath asked where Thamizhachi was when poet Vairamuthu allegedly insulted Goddess Andal and why she had not spoken out when speakers associated with Communist and Dravidar Kazhagam platforms allegedly targeted Hindu deities and beliefs. He claimed that her current portrayal as Andal amounted to a publicity exercise.

Sampath further alleged that Thamizhachi was attempting to mislead the public by opposing Sanatana Dharma on one hand while presenting herself in the attire of a Hindu deity on the other. He added that the public would not appreciate what he described as a “double act” and accused her of seeking attention through religious symbolism.

Once seen as a southern benchmark in public education, Tamil Nadu’s learning outcomes have witnessed a steep and worrying decline, according to the PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024.

The survey, conducted in December 2024 by the National Assessment Centre, PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), is a nationwide initiative under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Its objective is to assess students in Grades 3, 6, and 9 on competencies in language, mathematics, science, and social sciences across 781 districts in 36 States and UTs.

A total of 2.1 million students from over 74,000 schools participated in the survey, with 2.7 lakh teachers and school leaders also responding to detailed questionnaires. Tamil Nadu saw 1,13,553 students take part in the assessment. However, the state failed to make it into the top 10 for any grade level assessed, trailing below the national average in every major competency evaluated.

The national-level assessment has revealed that Tamil Nadu now trails behind even states traditionally perceived as lagging like Uttar Pradesh (UP), Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh (MP) in several core learning and institutional indicators.

The decline is evident across grades, subjects, social groups, and teaching standards.

Tamil Nadu’s Learning Outcomes In Decline

Let’s take a look at the learning outcomes for Tamil Nadu.

Below National Average In All Subjects

Across all three assessed grades, Grade 3 (Foundational), Grade 6 (Preparatory), and Grade 9 (Middle), Tamil Nadu’s average performance was consistently below the national average in every core subject: Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.

In contrast, the “Hindi” belt or BIMARU states such as UP, Bihar, MP, performed better.

Uttar Pradesh exceeded national averages in foundational numeracy and literacy (Grade 3).

Madhya Pradesh scored above or equal to the national average in Mathematics in Grades 6 and 9.

Bihar showed growth in Language and Science scores, narrowing the gap significantly with southern counterparts.

District-Level Underperformance

None of Tamil Nadu’s districts featured among the top 50 districts nationally in any grade. However, multiple TN districts were among the bottom 50:

  • Grade 3 Low Performers: Ranipet, Ramanathapuram
  • Grade 6 Low Performers: Tirupathur, Vellore, Ramanathapuram
  • Grade 9 Low Performers: Cuddalore, Tirupathur, Tiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur

States like Punjab, Kerala, and even Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh had multiple entries in the top-performing districts list.

National Comparison And High Performers

The top-performing states offer a stark contrast:

  • Grade 3: Punjab led across both language and mathematics.
  • Grade 6: Kerala emerged as the top performer.
  • Grade 9: Punjab again topped the charts.

Among government schools specifically:

  • Language proficiency (Grade 3): Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra stood out.
  • Mathematics proficiency (Grade 3): Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu were top performers.

Here are some national averages:

Assessing Preparatory Stage Competencies (Grade 6)

Assessing Middle Stage Competencies (Grade 9)

Structural Weaknesses and Systemic Gaps

Let us now take a look at the foundational weaknesses and gaps.

Foundational Competency Deficits

Less than 50% of Tamil Nadu’s Grade 3 students could perform basic reading or numeracy tasks, indicating deep-rooted foundational gaps.

In contrast, UP and MP students demonstrated better foundational competency with more than 60% proficiency in several indicators.

Declining Performance by Grade 9

Tamil Nadu’s students showed steep learning attrition by Grade 9:

  • Math competency scores dropped to ~33–37%
  • Science understanding was limited to 36–38%
  • Social Science and Civics averaged below 40%, pointing to weak conceptual comprehension

These metrics indicate a failure to transition from rote learning to conceptual application.

Teacher Preparedness and Pedagogy

Only 25% of teachers in Tamil Nadu underwent professional development in the last year among the lowest in India.

Less than 50% of teachers used toy-based learning or project-based assessment, lagging behind even northern states that have adopted NEP 2020-aligned practices.

ICT-based training participation was also below par compared to Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, which invested in EdTech post-COVID.

Inclusion, Well-Being, and Infrastructure Concerns

Let’s take a look at some of the other problematic areas.

CWSN Neglect

Only 28% of schools in Tamil Nadu had appropriate learning materials for Children With Special Needs. Assistive technologies were available in just 17% of schools.

Mental Health and SEL Deficits

17–25% of TN students reported feeling unsafe or anxious in school.

Low availability of counsellors, anti-bullying policies, and SEL practices worsens the learning environment.

Manodarpan, the national SEL initiative, remains poorly implemented in TN.

Digital and Skill Education Gap

Only 38% of students had access to a tablet/laptop at home.

Only 29% of Grade 9 students had enrolled in skill-based education, despite the state’s push for industry-linked education.

Let’s now take a look at how TN compares to a few peers such as UP, Bihar, and MP.

Tamil Nadu’s ideological resistance to NEP 2020 has arguably cost it crucial learning reforms. States like UP, MP, and Bihar, which have aligned their pedagogy, teacher training, and assessment with NEP’s competency-based framework, are now reaping benefits, as reflected in the PARAKH survey.

Even Kerala, while critical of some NEP aspects, adopted assessment reforms and SEL integration faster than Tamil Nadu.

Consistent Underperformance Pattern

Tamil Nadu’s underperformance follows a pattern observed in the previous National Achievement Survey (NAS). In response, the DMK-led government launched initiatives such as the #EnnumEzhuthum scheme to address foundational literacy and numeracy gaps. However, the recent PARAKH results suggest that these interventions have yet to produce meaningful outcomes.

Critics have pointed to the Dravidian Model’s politicisation of NEP 2020, arguing that opposition to the central education policy has come at the cost of addressing core learning outcomes. Commentators have also drawn parallels to the #NaanMudhalvan scheme, launched to boost skill development and placements for youth, which has similarly been criticised for lacklustre training and poor placement results.

Some Recommendations for Tamil Nadu

  1. Statewide Foundational Literacy Mission: Target Grades 1–5 with accelerated learning modules and diagnostic tools.
  2. Mandate Annual Teacher Training: Focus on digital tools, NEP-compliant pedagogy, and inclusive classroom management.
  3. District-Level Action Plans: Decentralize data-driven planning with accountability to improve district outcomes.
  4. Invest in SEL and Mental Health: Recruit trained counsellors, implement Manodarpan fully, and integrate SEL in pedagogy.
  5. Rebuild Public Trust in Education: Launch a “Back to Basics” campaign to refocus on core competencies and teacher-led reform.
  6. Adopt Competency-Based Assessments: Move away from rote learning models toward outcome-based frameworks as per NEP.

The findings from PARAKH 2024 deliver a wake-up call for Tamil Nadu. While its education model has historically emphasized access and inclusion, access without learning is no longer tenable. Without urgent systemic reforms and a reorientation toward competency-based, inclusive, and data-driven education, Tamil Nadu risks falling behind not just in national rankings but in securing the future of its students.

Ezhumbur, the historic name for Chennai’s Egmore station, was spotlighted in the Lok Sabha as Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized its redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Responding to DMK MP Tamilachi Thangapandian’s concerns, Vaishnaw hailed Ezhumbur’s transformation, stating it would soon become a prime attraction in Chennai, blending its legacy with modern upgrades.

During the ongoing Winter Session of the Lok Sabha, DMK MP Tamilachi Thangapandian raised concerns about restoring and redeveloping railway stations in Chennai under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Speaking in Parliament, Thangapandian highlighted the need for updates on redevelopment efforts, particularly in her constituency. She stated, “I would like to the minister through you sir regarding the Amrit Bharat station scheme. The ministry has announced 1324 stations which have been identified for redevelopment including 77 stations in the state of Tamil Nadu. I’d like to ask the Hon’ble Minister what has been the update with respect to these railway stations in our state, especially I have given representation to my constituency which is Saidapet station as well as the redevelopment work of Chennai Egmore.”

In response, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided an update on the station redevelopment programme, emphasizing the significant scale of the initiative. He noted, “The supplementary is actually not related to the main question. But still, I would like to point out that the Hon’ble Prime Minister has really focused on the transformation of Indian Railways, and as a part of that, one of the major programmes we have taken up is the redevelopment of 1,300 railway stations. And at this point in time, this is the world’s largest station redevelopment programme, and nowhere in the world has anybody taken up the redevelopment of such a large number of stations in a network which is continuously operating.”

Focusing on Chennai Egmore station, Vaishnaw remarked, “The Chennai Egmore, I would like to pronounce it as Chennai Ezhumbur, is one of the Amrit Bharat stations and it is developing very well. I have visited that twice and the design and the enthusiasm of the officers working on that project is really amazing. I can say that it will be one of the stations which will become a prime attraction in the city of Chennai. Regarding other stations, Hon’ble MP can always meet me and discuss the details.”

An 81-year-old fortune-teller in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, found himself in hot water after predicting a definite victory for PMK’s candidate for the Cuddalore Parliamentary constituency, Thangar Bacchan. The soothsayer, identified as Selvaraj, was taken into custody by officials of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department.

The controversy arose when a video surfaced on social media platforms, showing Selvaraj using a parakeet. The officials not only apprehended Selvaraj but also seized his cage containing two parakeets, claiming that he had violated the Wildlife Protection Act by utilizing the birds to read the fortunes of the PMK candidate.

Thangar Bachan, a film director turned politician, had visited the Azhagu Muthu Ayyanar temple at Thennampakkam near Cuddalore, where he sought the services of the fortune-teller.

During the consultation, the parakeet reportedly picked a card depicting the image of the presiding deity, Azhagu Muthu Ayyanar. Selvaraj interpreted this as a positive sign, assuring PMK candidate Thangar Bacchan of an unquestionable victory in the polls.

PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss questioned whether all fortune-tellers using parakeets would be subject to arrest, asserting that people’s faith should not be disrupted.

On 11 March 2022, DMK Rajya Sabha MP MM Abdulla unleashed an abusive tirade against two individuals, one of whom is a woman journalist, for speaking against DMK IT wing whose members allegedly harass anyone who criticizes the party on social media.

It all started with DMK supporters and cadres sharing a morphed image of political commentator ‘Savukku’ Shankar. The original image of Savukku Shankar standing with a few men at a tea shop with a file close to his armpit was morphed to look like a pimp in front of a brothel.

Enraged, Shankar stated that this was the ‘disgusting work’ of the DMK IT team of Udhayanidhi in Chinnamalai (in Chennai), which is allegedly funded by the DMK State deputy secretary of IT wing Karthik Mohan alias ‘Anna Nagar’ Karthi. Shankar implied that the Chinnamalai IT team was funded by Karthik Mohan’s money from G Square, a real estate company allegedly linked to the DMK’s first family. He also stated that DMK Rajya Sabha MP MM Abdulla visits the Chinnamalai IT wing twice a month to encourage them to engage in abusive tweets and post on those who criticize DMK on social media.

Soon after Savukku’s tweets accusing DMK IT wing members of abusive tweets, a few anonymous accounts supporting the DMK began trending meme templates depicting Savukku Shankar as a ‘pimp’.

DMK MP MM Abdulla responded to Savukku Shankar’s accusation by saying, “Savukku Shankar is claiming that the Chinnamalai IT team photoshopped him to look like a pimp. If the Chinnamalai IT team had done it, they would have depicted him as a prostitute in the Marina beach background, demanding ₹5 for hand j*b and ₹10 for blowj*b.”

When Savukku Shankar said that MK Stalin has made such a person who uses abusive language in public as a Member of Parliament, MM Abdulla abused again saying,”Hey Moothevi (a slur word about Hindu god). Then do you think MK Stalin will make a broker like you as MP?”

In response to the abusive rant, Savukku Shankar asked if the MP was drunk, to which MM Abdulla replied, “Do you think I’m a pimp like you to pour (drinks) and pimp?” DMK MP MM Abdulla further continued his rant.

In another tweet, he abused a female journalist Sonia Arunkumar, who also spoke against the cyber harassment meted out by a few Dravidian Stockists. Linking Savukku Shankar and Sonia Arunkumar sexually, DMK MP MM Abdulla said,” I’m now a member of Parliament. Had I been a troll master like before… I would have posted the ‘Kaathal’ movie meme template showing them (Shankar and Sonia) as ‘Maama and Maami, a good combination’. Now that I am an MP I should not do that. It is wrong.”

Journalist Sonia Arunkumar responded to the sexual remarks by saying, “This is how he serves the state by becoming an MP. His sole accomplishment was inspiring four retards to pursue anyone who criticized them. I would have referred to him disrespectfully if he hadn’t been an MP.

This abusive rant of DMK MP MM Abdulla received backlash on social media. However, no mainstream media has covered the DMK MP’s vulgar rant.

Renowned archeologist and epigraphist Dr. Nagaswamy passed away yesterday, and many leaders have offered the condolences to the scholar. Meanwhile, DMK MP Kanimozhi shared a condolence tweet in Tamil in the morning, which was then deleted from her Twitter page. BJP Spokesperson SG Suryah had shared a snip of the tweet and had questioned as to why a condolence tweet should be deleted. He even asked if even offering of condolences is dictated by the DMK party.

However, it has now been found that Kanimozhi had made severael ‘spelling errors’ in her Tamil tweet. She has used the wrong ‘na’ alphabet in Tamil, for 2 words, “Iyakunar” and “Bhushan”.

Kanimozhi spelling mistake

The DMK MP has now reposted the tweet, after correcting the spelling errors that she had earlier made. Kanimozhi is the daughter of the late Karunanidhi, who is hailed by the DMK as ‘Muthamizh Arignar’ referring to his knowledge in Tamil.

DMK leaders also claim themselves to be the torchbearers of Tamil and Tamil rights.  It is ironical that this spelling-error tweet comes the same day as CM MK ‘Stalin’ has asked couples to name their children in Tamil.

The world’s most expensive mangoes are available in Madhya Pradesh. A kilo is sold for ₹2.70 lakh. The couple who owns them has appointed 6 dogs and 4 guards to protect the 7 mango trees in their garden. Heavy security has been arranged this year as the mangoes were stolen by thieves last year.

Sankalp Parihar hails from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Sankalp and his wife Rani have been cultivating mango saplings in their garden, which has now been transformed into an orchard. Little did they know that one of the saplings belonged to Japan’s Miyazaki mangoes.

Known as one of the most expensive mangoes in the world, Japan’s Miyazaki mangoes are found to grow red in colour, and sell for much higher prices than gold and silver jewelry. The price of this Miyazaki mango went up to ₹2.7 lakh per kg last year. To protect their mangoes from thieves they have 4 guards and 6 dogs guarding their orchard 24 hours a day. Sankalp says security personnel have been appointed this time as thieves stole the fruit last year.

Speaking about this to reporters, Sankalp said, “last year, thieves broke into our garden and stole an expensive Japanese Miyazaki mango. The mango is rarely grown in India and its price is high in the international market.”

Explaining as to how he chanced upon these rare mangoes, he said, “I met a man on the train in Chennai and he gave me two rare Japanese mango saplings. I have been calling these mangoes ‘Tamini’, after the person who gave me the saplings, since I wasn’t aware of its actual name. Some thieves who knew about the value of this mango stole it last year and this year, we have hired people for security. We have no plans to sell these mangoes. We are going to grow more trees using the seeds. ”

Miyazaki mangoes from Japan are called ‘sun eggs’ and each mango sells for up to ₹21,000. They are the most expensive in the world, and sell for ₹2.70 lakh per kg in the international market.

The video of a BJP MP cleaning the toilet at a special corona treatment centre has gone viral on social media.

Janardhanan Misra, a BJP MP from Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, is a great proponent of the central government’s Clean India initiative. He had gone to inspect the Corona treatment center set up at Mauganj block in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh.

While inspecting the Corona centre, Janardhanan Misra saw that the toilet was clogged and dirty. He wore gloves and used his hands to unclog and clean the toilet without waiting for anyone’s help. After cleaning the toilets, he instructed the officials to keep the toilets clean and warned that strict action would be taken if toilets were not kept clean the next time.

In this regard, MP Janardhanar Misra said, “No work is small or big during this pandemic. The toilet was dirty. So I cleaned it to make people aware and understand the importance of cleanliness.”

This is not the first time Janardhanan Misra has cleaned public toilets. In 2018, When he inspected a school in the Kajuha village in Rewa district, he found that the toilets were dirty and decided to clean them himself.

A video has been going viral on social media in which the DMK MP from Salem, S.R. Parthiban can be seen taking to his heels after failing to answer the questions posed by his constituency people.

The DMK MP had visited a village near Omalur town panchayat falling under his constituency. He had stopped by to interact with the people of the village.

During the interaction, one of the villagers asks the DMK MP about the promise of loan waivers made by him during the 2019 general elections.  Apparently, the DMK MP had promised to waive off farm loans, gold loans, education loans, etc.

https://www.facebook.com/100026123880284/videos/628660414681416

Responding to this, the DMK MP says that they had promised to do it only after forming the government. The DMK MP says “We couldn’t come to power, we lost. Had we clinched the power, the first thing that Thalapathy (referring to DMK chief MK Stalin) would have done is signed on these loan waivers.”

“Just bear for 4 more months. The promise will be fulfilled with your blessings. Thalapathy will come as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and once he comes he will fulfil all your demands”, the DMK MP can be heard saying.

The villager then responds to DMK MP Parthiban saying “You keep talking depending on these 4 months. What should we do till then?” to which the DMK MP says “We are not in power right? What can we do?”.

Another person shooting the video on his cell phone asks the DMK MP Parthiban whether he promised to deliver his promises only after forming the government or after becoming MP.

“You only said that you would waive off all the loans after becoming MP right? You did not say that the Congress government will do it after coming to power”, the villager grills the DMK MP. To this the DMK MP Parthiban responds pointing fingers at the persons asking questions saying “You are ADMK, you are ADMK, you are ADMK. 3 ADMK members are standing here.” and abruptly leaves the spot.

Irked by the DMK’s comment, the villagers can be seen coming down heavy on the DMK MP for branding those asking questions as ADMK members, while he makes his way to his car without paying heed to the villagers.

“How do you know that I am from ADMK? If people ask questions to you they become ADMK members is it? You have come here to mislead people. You think people here are illiterate fools? You only spoke of waiving of education loans. Have the guts and speak on it now.” , the man recording the video  can be heard asking agitatedly.

“You have come here to cheat people right? Now only we have got MNREGA work here and you have come here to spoil that as well. Why have you come here? Talk now. Do you know how many people have pledged their jewels? Who will save them? Can you get it back for us? Why are you not able to talk now?”, the man lambasts while other women workers working in the area also join him in questioning the DMK MP.

This video has now gone viral on social media with many criticizing the DMK MP for leaving his own constituency people in lurch.

Eight MPs that includes Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen, Sanjay Singh of Aam Aadmi Party, Rajeev Satav, Ripun Bora and Syed Nasir Hussain of the Congress and CPI(M) leaders KK Ragesh and Elamaram Kareem have been suspended for a week for their “unruly behaviour especially with the Chair and gross disorderly conduct”.

The Rajya Sabha on Sunday witnessed uproar as the opposition MPs created ruckus over the passing of the two farm bills: The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020.

Derek O’Brien of the TMC jumped into the well and heckled at the Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh. The agitated MP also tore the rule book in front of him. Sanjay Singh and Rajiv Satav climbed onto the Secretary General’s table at the centre of the house.

Today, as the suspended MPs refused to leave, the house caused multiple adjournments of the Rajya Sabha.

“I am pained at what happened yesterday. It defies logic. It is a bad day for Rajya Sabha,” said Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu said adding that the members threw papers, wrenched mics away, “physically threatened” Deputy Chairman. While the opposition said that an opportunity should be given to the MPs to explain themselves, the Rajya Sabha refused it saying that the decision was based on government position.

“I am naming Mr Derek O Brien. Please go out of the house,” Mr Naidu said, as he named the suspended members. However none of them budged.
