An incident in Tenkasi district, where villagers objected to the presence of two MLAs at a ration shop inauguration and forced them to leave the venue, has triggered political attention and social media discussion.

The incident occurred at Kuvalaikkanni village near Sankarankovil, under Sankarankovil taluk. A public distribution system (PDS) ration shop building constructed at an estimated cost of ₹15 lakh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) was scheduled to be inaugurated on the day.

According to reports, Sankarankovil MLA Raja and Vasudevanallur Sadhan Thirumalaikumar, along with officials and local functionaries (around 100 of them), arrived at the village for the inauguration ceremony.

However, tensions arose when the Kovalakanni panchayat president, Dinesh, along with villagers, questioned the MLAs’ presence. Villagers reportedly confronted them, stating that the legislators had not visited the constituency for nearly four-and-a-half years and pointed out that the ration shop was not built using MLA or MP funds. They objected to the MLAs inaugurating the facility and argued that they had no role in the project.

The confrontation led to a brief period of commotion and tension at the site. Following the protests, both MLAs left the venue without inaugurating the ration shop. Subsequently, villagers themselves opened the ration shop and completed the inauguration.

Videos reportedly showing villagers chasing away the Sankarankovil and Vasudevanallur MLAs have since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention to the incident and sparking debate over elected representatives’ engagement with their constituencies.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala expelled a senior leader from its Kannur stronghold after he publicly alleged large-scale misappropriation of party funds, triggering an internal crisis for the party ahead of the Assembly elections.

The Kannur district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday, 26 January 2026, expelled V Kunhikrishnan, a district committee member and a party functionary for over five decades, citing indiscipline and actions that allegedly brought disrepute to the party.

Kunhikrishnan had levelled allegations of financial misappropriation amounting to ₹46 lakh against T I Madhusoodanan, the CPI(M) legislator from Payyannur. The allegations related to funds raised for multiple purposes, including support for the family of slain party activist C V Dhanarajan, construction of the Payyannur area committee office, and election-related expenses. Dhanarajan, a CPI(M) worker, was hacked to death in 2016 in an incident the party attributes to BJP-RSS workers.

The controversy has caused significant embarrassment for the CPI(M), particularly as it emerged from Kannur, widely regarded as the party’s citadel in Kerala, and at a time when Assembly elections are approaching.

Announcing the disciplinary action, CPI(M) Kannur district secretary K K Ragesh said the party had already conducted an internal inquiry into the funds in question and concluded that no money had been lost. However, he acknowledged procedural lapses, including the temporary diversion of funds collected for specific purposes and the disappearance of some receipt books used during fund collection. He said appropriate action had been taken against the party office secretary responsible for maintaining accounts.

Ragesh declined to make the party’s financial accounts public, stating that such disclosure was against the party’s organisational line.

Kunhikrishnan, however, maintained that funds collected from various contributors were not properly accounted for and alleged that misappropriation had taken place through inflated land purchase prices and the inclusion of bogus expenses. He pointed out that Madhusoodanan was serving as the Payyannur area secretary of the party during the period when the alleged irregularities occurred.

He further stated that he had repeatedly raised the issue with the party leadership and submitted what he described as documentary evidence, but his complaints were ignored. He is now preparing a book that he claims will expose internal functioning and issues within the CPI(M). Despite instructions from the party leadership to refrain from publishing the book, Kunhikrishnan has refused to back down.

Signs of internal discontent surfaced in Kannur following his expulsion, with posters supporting Kunhikrishnan appearing in CPI(M) strongholds even as senior party leaders publicly criticised him. The situation escalated further after CPI(M) workers allegedly attacked Congress and BJP activists who staged protests against the party in the wake of the revelations. CPI(M) workers also held a protest in front of Kunhikrishnan’s residence.

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy said on Friday that Congress won’t succeed in ‘Operation Hast,’ which is “designed to finish off” the JD(S) in Karnataka. Addressing media in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy, the Karnataka JD(S) Chief said: “The Congress is plotting to finish off our party by trying to lure 12 or 13 MLAs. I am aware of all these conspiracies. We know what the Congress is up to. Their sins are piling up, and divine justice will eventually punish them.”

Expressing confidence over his MLAs’ loyalty, he said: “They are informing me of Congress’ activities. We know how to safeguard our party. The JD(S) cannot be shaken or weakened by anyone.” Slamming the Congress government for its “unfulfilled” guarantee schemes, the leader said: “There’s a race to announce unrealistic schemes. Look at what has happened in Himachal Pradesh after similar guarantees. Congress MLAs and ministers must question their conscience, observe what is happening in the state, and think about the direction in which you are taking Karnataka.” The Union Minister said that instead of unveiling new development initiatives, the government has announced price hikes.

Comparing the governance in the state with the previous dispensation, he said, “Earlier, price hikes were made only when necessary. Adjustments were also made to reduce prices when possible. But this government’s mismanagement has placed the entire burden on the people. It has taken every problem onto itself and is making the public pay the price.” Expressing displeasure over the bus fare hike, he said: “The government has increased bus fares by 15 per cent placing a heavy burden on the people. While the public is expressing outrage, they’ve also grown accustomed to it. They protest for two days and then forget about it, adjusting to the higher fares. This is the reality.”

He said, “This same Congress government imposed a cess on diesel and petrol. Did people protest? No, they adjusted to it. They increased stamp duty, guidance values, liquor prices, and now even milk prices are set to be hiked There’s talk of water tariffs going up next.” Responding to questions from the media, Kumaraswamy said, “The names of Nikhil (his son) and Anita Kumaraswamy (wife) have been mentioned in the cheating case involving one Aishwarya Gowda. I know who is behind this.” “It is clear how much investigation is taking place under this government. They must reveal when the accused Aishwarya Gowda met Nikhil and Anita. They have not even seen her face,” Kumaraswamy said.

In a landmark ruling on 9 December 2024, the Telangana High Court stripped former BRS MLA Chennamaneni Ramesh of his Indian citizenship, declaring him a German citizen. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh for concealing his German citizenship and misleading the judiciary. This decision marks the first instance of a former legislator losing their Indian citizenship.

Justice B Vijaysen Reddy, in his judgment, stated that Ramesh’s actions since 2009 had deprived genuine Indian citizens of their right to contest elections. The court upheld the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ decision to revoke Ramesh’s Indian citizenship, citing his status as a German national. The ruling also highlighted that Ramesh had failed to provide any documentation from the German embassy confirming he was no longer a citizen of Germany.

The case stems from a petition filed by Congress functionary Aadi Srinivas, who argued that Ramesh had naturalized as a German citizen in the 1990s after settling in Germany. In Germany, Ramesh worked, married, and raised a family. Despite acquiring Indian citizenship in 2008, Ramesh had retained his German passport and citizenship, which led to questions about the validity of his electoral candidacy.

Ramesh, who represented the Vemulawada constituency for four terms between 2009 and 2018, won elections while concealing his dual nationality. In his final electoral attempt, Ramesh contested in the November 2023 election with forged documents, presenting himself as an Indian national, despite holding German citizenship. The court found that his concealment of facts had misled both the Indian government and the electorate.

The Telangana High Court had earlier been informed by the central government that Ramesh held a German passport valid until 2023. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs had issued an order in 2020 revoking his Indian citizenship, citing Ramesh’s failure to disclose his German citizenship during the application process. The Ministry further stated that had Ramesh revealed he had not resided in India for the required period before applying for Indian citizenship, the government would not have granted his request.

In response, Ramesh filed a petition challenging the Home Ministry’s order. He was asked by the court to submit an affidavit detailing his German passport’s surrender and proof that he had renounced his German citizenship. In 2013, the undivided Andhra Pradesh High Court had quashed Ramesh’s bypoll victory on similar grounds, though he later secured a stay from the Supreme Court.

The Telangana High Court’s decision is a significant moment in Indian electoral law, as it reaffirms the requirement that only Indian citizens are eligible to contest elections or vote.

In a recently surfaced video, the Tiruthani MLA was caught making caste-based appeals to a group of women voters, asserting the importance of the Vanniyar community in his constituency.

The video shows the MLA stating, “I’m Tiruthani MLA, DMK MLA. I was a District Secretary. I’m not someone from outside, I’m also a Vanniyar. I am one of you. Congress’s Krishnaswamy is my close relative. In Tiruthani, we run K. Vinayagam Matric School and a women’s college. My father’s name is Shanmugam Reddiar, and he used to conduct Vanniyar Sangam meetings in Tiruthani. People in and around Tiruthani used to come and followed his command. Thalapahty K. Vinayagam is none but Congress Krishnaswamy’s father-in-law. He was Tiruthani MLA. My father started a school and college in his name. Over 2000 students study in campus spread over 30 acres. My father has written a will stating that this school and college belongs to every Vanniyar living in this the world. He started it to provide education for our caste people. Today we’re running it in Thiruthani town. I haven’t mentioned this history anywhere. I didn’t tell this in the meeting yesterday I spoke”

The MLA went on to claim, “There are many within the DMK party working for our Vanniyar community. From that background, I’ve been with the DMK. I’ve been a Municipal Chairman for 15 years. I’ve been continuously winning. I was the Chairman when Jayalalithaa Amma was there and during DMK period. I kept winning continuously. They offered me an MLA seat and I won because I’m a man of my word and honest. I’ve a good name among people. Not one vote will go against my word.”

He further said “MK Stalin appointed me because he was clear that a Vanniyar MLA had to be from this area. He knew that I have this background and I would be able to talk to people and get the votes. You may think with what authority I came here to fetch votes. Kalaignar was the first to propose 20% reservation for our community. Many didn’t know this. Only because of this reservation do our community’s students become doctors, sub-inspectors, and collectors. Before that, there was no reservation. Our community was struggling. Edappadi Palaniswamy failed to secure 10.5% reservation for us, and now the courts have canceled it. If the central government supports us, our DMK government will be able to reinstate this. We have provided so many welfare schemes to women.”

The BJP MLA of Coimbatore South, Vanathi Srinivasan, lambasted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in a letter for not wishing for Deebavali which she alleges as a deliberate snub to the Hindu community during the festive season.

In a strongly-worded statement released today, Vanathi questioned the Chief Minister’s conspicuous silence on extending Diwali greetings to Hindus when leaders of different parties like AIADMK, AMMK, etc have extended their wishes.

“Tomorrow , 12 November 2023, not only in India but all over the world, Hindus are getting ready to celebrate Deebavali. The festival is celebrated with new clothes, sweets, a variety of dishes, and crackers. Children get excited a week before Diwali,” she stated in her statement.

Vanathi emphasized the significance of Deebavali in the cultural fabric of the nation, stating, “In Bharat, Deebvali has its own place in the most exciting celebrations. Lakhs of crores of rupees in the economy get generated due to Deebavali. The basic philosophy of Deepavali is that no matter how much adharma and injustices arise, in the end dharma will prevail.”

Expressing disappointment at the Chief Minister’s apparent oversight, she continued, “Deebavali is celebrated with much fervor in Tamil Nadu than in other states of India. Fireworks, textiles, and other trades centered around Deebavali have made Tamil Nadu a developed state. But the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri. M.K. Stalin does not say a word of greetings on Deepavali.”

Vanathi didn’t shy away from pointing fingers, alleging bias against the Hindu community from the Chief Minister and the DMK party. “Everyone knows that  CM MK Stalin and the DMK, which he is the leader of, are only opposed to Hinduism. The Chief Minister’s son, Udhayaindhi Stalin proudly says that my wife is a Christian, and speaks of eradicating Sanatana Dharma i.e. Hinduism like dengue, malaria, and mosquitoes.”

While not expecting Deebavali greetings from Stalin as the DMK president, Vanathi Srinivasan underscored the duty of the Chief Minister to treat all citizens equally. “It is the duty of the Chief Minister to treat all citizens equally. But whenever the DMK comes to power, their chief ministers don’t just greet on Hindu festivals. I don’t know what hatred they have for Hindus.”

Challenging the Chief Minister directly, Vanathi Srinivasan concluded her statement with a pointed question, “What sin did the Hindus commit? Therefore, the Hon’ble Chief Minister MK Stalin, will you extend wishes this Deepavali? Or are you going to continue, as usual, with your selective secularism, i.e., anti-Hinduism?”

Kanchipuram MLA Ezhilarasan who is also the member of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) visited Kizhapathirpur village in his constituency to inaugurate a Fair Price Shop building there. Upon learning of his presence, he was soon surrounded by several women from the village and women who were part of the MNREGA 100-day job scheme made one specific complaint – that they did not receive the promised ₹1000 under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam.

The Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam was one of the poll promises of the DMK where women were eligible for ₹1000 each month. However, the eligibility came with several conditions. The scheme was launched in September 2023, two years after the DMK came to power in the state.

The state claimed that more than 1 crore women who were eligible for the scheme were identified and narrowed down from the applications received. However, many of those who received seemed the money to be members of the DMK themselves. There were several complaints that women did not receive the promised ₹1000. The ones who received the amount were found to be living in big homes complete with LED TVs and refrigerators.

Owing to this, the women questioned the DMK MLA about the ₹1000 and the failure of the government to give it to them. They also shouted at the MLA after a point. The women said they were asking because it was promised to them. The MLA then said, “No it was not promised to everyone”. Angered by the questions raised, Ezhilarasan asked the women around him about the “₹15 lakhs promised by the BJP”. He said, “Ten years ago, he said he will deposit ₹15 lakhs for each household, why didn’t you question him, did you receive the ₹15 lakhs?”

The DMK MLA can be heard hurling expletives on PM Modi.

A woman in the crowed retorted, “If Modi comes here, we will ask him. Since you are here, we are asking about your promise.”

Another old woman in the crowd chipped in complaining about the ₹1000 she did not receive. This time Ezhilarasan started questioning the VAO why the women did not get their money. Someone from the crowd claimed that they received a message that they did not get it because they did not file their taxes. Ezhilarasan asked, “Do these people look like they file IT? Why cannot you research this properly? Strict action will be taken against you. Do you think the government has to answer for your mistakes?,” he thundered.

Deflecting the blame to someone else is something the DMK is known to be good at. When asked about the ₹1000, the MLA shifted the goalpost by talking about the imaginary ₹15 lakhs and then conveniently shifted the blame to the VAO.

This is not the first time that the DMK MLA has resorted to spewing abuses in public.

Earlier in 2021, a video surfaced on social media in which DMK MLA C.V.M.P Ezhilarasan can be heard abusing officials with unparliamentary language.

Virugambakkam MLA Prabhakar Raja of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has come under scrutiny for allegedly pressuring government school students to endorse an anti-NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) campaign.

DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is also a Minister in his father’s cabinet launched a signature campaign against NEET calling for its withdrawal.

In a video circulated in social media, the school’s headmaster can be seen introducing the DMK’s anti-NEET campaign to students, calling it an obstacle to students’ medical aspirations due to disparities in the curriculum.

“No matter how much you score in Class 12, they’re not giving MBBS seat based on that. There is this exam called NEET. For that exam, there is additional syllabus than our existing syllabus. So, we’re not able to write for that syllabus. Hence, our students are not able to pass in that exam. Our government (DMK government) is taking continuous efforts to abolish NEET. You might’ve seen in TV, our Chief Minister and other Ministers including School Education Minister are continuously for the past 2-3 years are saying that we don’t want NEET.“, the headmaster says.

The headmaster further cited Udhayanidhi Stalin’s call for a signature campaign to oppose NEET. When he inquired with the students about who had recently made headlines by addressing this matter, anticipating a resounding chorus of “Udhayanidhi Stalin,” the students instead appeared perplexed and gave no clear response.

“What did our Sports Minister Udhyanidhi Stalin speak about NEET? Nobody is watching TV News is it?“, the dejected headmaster asks and goes on to elaborate about Udhayanidhi Stalin’s signature campaign against NEET.

MLA Prabhakar Raja then takes the stage and reiterates the DMK’s stance, asserting that entrance exams like NEET should be abolished.

“What class is going on now?” asks the DMK MLA to which the students respond “commerce”. It is noteworthy to mention that commerce group students do not study the subjects (physics, chemistry and biology) which is required for NEET. Having realized the fiasco, the DMK MLA goes on to say “The subject you are studying is not going to make you doctors. But in our society we need doctors. Fever, headache, in this new age, there are new diseases coming isn’t it?”

He draws parallels with the removal of engineering entrance exams during his college days, crediting the DMK for that move. Raja also can be heard criticizing the growth of expensive coaching institutes that prey on NEET aspirants.

Furthermore, Raja highlighted that Tamil Nadu stands as a solitary state vehemently opposing NEET, with a significant number of medical seats and doctors. He argued that a substantial 40% percentage of foreign nationals flock to India for medical facilities, in that nearly 30% depend only on Tamil Nadu’s medical system.

Raja then goes on to emotionally instigate students invoking the tragic case of Anitha, a student who took her own life due to the NEET controversy. He stated that despite achieving a high score of 1200 in her 12th-grade examinations, Anitha’s “dreams of becoming a doctor were thwarted by the NEET system”.

The MLA further instigated students to participate in the DMK’s signature campaign and become advocates against NEET.

Critics have accused Prabhakar Raja of exploiting the impressionable minds of students for political gain, characterizing his actions as “cheap politics” within the school premises.

Shalin Maria Lawrence, who identifies herself as a ‘Dalit Christian writer’ and an ‘anti-caste activist’ has been threatened by RK Nagar DMK MLA J.J. Ebenezer for a social media post against him in which she alleged that he forced a corporation worker to clean the sewer.

Earlier, the incident involving a man digging a drain with his bare hands in front of a DMK MLA had sparked widespread outrage. The public complained at the time that water could not flow through the aqueduct in a nearby street and that the sewer was blocked.

DMK MLA Ebenezer, who immediately went to the location, was enraged to see it lying like a drain. Following that, he chastised the corporation officials who had accompanied him, and they summoned a corporation employee to clean the drain. Without any safety equipment, the employee threw the waste out with his elbow-sized hand inside.

As the video has gone viral on social media, questions and criticisms have been raised about how the MLA allowed the municipal employee to dig the drain with his bare hands and without any safety equipment.

This was shared by Shalin Maria Lawrence as well who said “This is a crime under Prevention of manual scavenging act and SC/ST POA. Does this government have a conscious?!”

BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai too called for taking action against the MLA under the Prevention of Atrocities Act.

With the incident gaining traction, the DMK MLA resorted to threatening the ‘Dalit Christian’ woman writer.

Following the threat, ‘activist’ Shalin who often criticizes the BJP as a fascist party, wrote in anguish that she will not criticize DMK state government henceforth.

A video has surfaced on social media in which DMK MLA from Kanchipuram C.V.M.P Ezhilarasan can be heard abusing officials with unparliamentary language.

In the video, the DMK MLA says “Seruppu pinjidum. (Will slipper you till they tear apart). I am sparing you since the media is here.” and can be seen intimidating the officials present at the site.

Many on social media pointed out that this kind of behaviour is typical of the DMK.

However, one of the DMK supporter on Twitter mentioned that the MLA was questioning the officials about the encroachment of temple land belonging to Ekambareswarar Temple that was allegedly encroached by an AIADMK functionary.

AIADMK Spokesperson Kovai Sathyan said that the remarks made the DMK on government servants was highly reprehensible.
