Kamal Haasan, the leader of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), and now Rajya Sabha MP backed by the DMK, has emphasized that his party’s alliance with the DMK is not just a political partnership but something “more than sacred.” During an advisory meeting on Tamil Nadu and Puducherry’s upcoming assembly elections, which is being held from 18 September to the 21 September 2025 at Raja Annamalaipuram, Chennai, Haasan consulted with district administrators from Chennai on 18 September 2025. In the evening, he continued his discussions with administrators from Kanchipuram and the party’s local branches.

In the coming days, Kamal Haasan will hold consultations in various regions: Coimbatore tomorrow morning, Madurai in the evening, Nellai and Trichy the day after, and finally in Villupuram, Salem, and Puducherry on the 21st. These meetings will involve the party’s state administrators, branch leaders, and MPs, all of whom will meet Haasan to discuss MNM’s strategies and preparations for the elections.

When asked about the popularity of MNM, sources say Kamal Haasan is actively gathering input from the party’s leaders about which constituencies they can contest in the upcoming assembly elections. He is also focusing on strengthening the party’s foundation and improving its organizational structure.

Speaking to the party’s administrators, Haasan stated, “I am not the living Kamaraj. My real name is Parthasarathy.” He went on to quote poet Bharathi, who had advocated for a society without caste divisions and suggested conducting a caste-based census. Haasan also expressed his belief that politics should avoid exploitation and should focus on nationalism.

Haasan further elaborated that leaders should emerge from within the party after him, stressing the importance of continuity. “Some say we’ve joined the DMK, but the DMK itself originated from the Justice Party, and our party’s name also reflects justice. This is not just an alliance, it is something more than sacred,” he remarked. According to Haasan, MNM is the only centrist party in Asia, and the country should avoid being divided into rigid left and right ideologies.

MNM, launched in 2018 as an alternative to the two dominant Dravidian parties, has yet to secure a significant electoral victory. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Haasan contested from Coimbatore South but narrowly lost to the BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan.

Sources within the party told NDTV that the current focus is on identifying constituencies where MNM can have a stronger presence, based on the 2021 results. They are working to consolidate support in areas where the party already has a base. “We are strategizing to strengthen our position and expand our presence on the ground,” said a party functionary.

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Haasan announced an alliance with the DMK, calling it crucial to counter the BJP. In recognition of this partnership, the DMK facilitated Haasan’s entry into the Rajya Sabha. These ongoing consultations are seen as essential for MNM as it seeks a meaningful role in the alliance, particularly in the party’s first assembly election as a partner in the ruling front.

Part-time politician turned full-time DMK stooge Kamal Haasan—who effectively leased out his party to the DMK in exchange for a lone Rajya Sabha seat now appears more like a full-time DMK loyalist than an independent politician. For the first time in five years, Kamal has skipped wishing Vijay on his birthday. A grudge, perhaps? Seems likely after all, Vijay has now launched his own party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which is directly challenging the DMK.

Back in 2021, when Kamal was leading MNM and stood as a vocal critic of the DMK, he tweeted, “Happy birthday to my beloved brother @actorvijay who has captivated Tamil hearts with his talent and love.”

In 2022, reports stated that Kamal personally called Vijay on his 48th birthday to convey his wishes.

Again in 2024, he posted on X, “I wish my beloved brother and the leader of Tamil Nadu Victory Party @actorvijay a happy birthday.”

However, in 2025, after accepting a Rajya Sabha seat through the DMK quota, Kamal Haasan—once a self-proclaimed “independent voice that shattered DMK TV”—has maintained stoic silence on Vijay’s 51st birthday. The sudden break in this annual tradition has triggered speculation: Has Vijay’s launch of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a party poised to take on the DMK, shifted Kamal’s affections to political allegiance?

From wishing warmly as an “actor-friend” to cold silence as a DMK-nominated MP—has Kamal Haasan traded camaraderie for compliance?

Following the underwhelming performance of Kamal Haasan’s latest film Thug Life, instead of accepting the obvious criticism, the DMK-stooge allegedly resorted to cheap theatrics deploying party-linked MNM functionaries to theaters to intimidate audiences and suppress negative reviews.

One such incident is said to have occurred on the film’s third day, where viewers openly mocked the movie. Unable to handle the backlash, the functionary reportedly doubled down absurdly defending Dravidianists Kamal Haasan and Suriya. Shockingly, he even called for banning YouTube reviews, as if censorship could salvage the film’s failure.

The alleged MNM Functionary said, “I’ve been watching movies since I was 9 years old from the era of old black-and-white films. Back then, there were no YouTube channels, movies ran successfully. Many films celebrated silver jubilees, and then he gave several trendsetting hits. But nowadays, there are some wicked individuals trying to sabotage movies. If the Chief Minister orders a ban on YouTube tomorrow, every movie will start doing well again.”

The female anchor responded angrily after his baseless accusation, “But even good films are being praised on YouTube. ‘Tourist Family’ was a small-budget movie and it still got a good response.”

The MNM functionary refused to accept it and replied, “Sasikumar is facing financial issues. His performance in that film was average. When ‘Tourist Family’ released, no other major film was out at the time, so people had no choice but to watch it. That’s why it did well.”

Another anchor countered, “Suriya film was also released then.” The MNM functionary replied, “Do not confront with Suriya. Suriya is an outstanding performer. We shouldn’t speak about him. Even Sasikumar is a fan of Kamal sir, so I don’t want to blame him too. But what I’m saying ‘Tourist Family’ ran solo. Had it released now, it wouldn’t have been successful.”

The female anchor got annoyed and asked, “Now ‘Thug Life’ has released as a solo. Will it run successfully?” The MNM functionary confidently said, “Yes, definitely.” The anchor challenged, “Do you know that since yesterday, except for Rohini Theatre, there were no 9 PM shows? The shows were canceled because tickets hadn’t been booked for a whole week.”

The MNM functionary responded, “That’s the work of wicked. During the audio launch, he clearly said, ‘I’ve made a good film and I have faith in you. My next film depends on this.’ Ladies will come here after and they like Kamal sir much. Kamal sir has a strong female fan base. The women will start coming soon. You shouldn’t judge a movie by its first three days. Have you heard of the film ‘Maithili En Kathali’? It didn’t perform well in the first week. But from the 8th day, it picked up. I don’t know if you know this, but I do. I’m 61 years old. It became a success in the second week. The same will happen here. After a week, the ‘ladies rowdy’ group will come in and turn it into a huge hit. The movie is already a success, but I’m telling you, you will soon see an overwhelming crowd. I’m warning that person khaki shirt or a red shirt — if you give good reviews, you’ll exist. If you give bad review, you cease to be. YouTube should be banned. If the public/Makkal (Kamal) demands it, the CM will take action and ban it.”

One of the moviegoers, likely a college student, was giving a negative review of the film to a YouTube channel, calling it a waste of time and criticizing its lack of plot. As he expressed his frustration, an MNM official stepped in, trying to silence him. However, this only angered the student further—he retorted that he was already annoyed by the terrible movie and now was being forced to defend it, even though it was clearly not worth watching.

The Student said, “We didn’t expect much—we came just to see if it would be good or not. He was trying to explain the story, but I told him not to tell the story. But the movie was bad—what are we supposed to do now?”

MNM Official interrupting said, “The movies that were released long back, there were many movies. But you’re just simply saying it’s bad.”

Student annoyingly replied, “I’m not saying it lightly. I purchased a ₹220 ticket, so I will say it. It was a mistake to come watch this movie. I’m already upset after watching through it, and now you’re making me question why we saw it, even why we are here!”

The MNM functionary then lectured the student, arguing that he shouldn’t criticize the film—especially since it had a massive ₹300 crore budget and lamented that such negative remarks could harm its success.

Kamal Haasan, a full-time actor and part-time politician has been facing significant setbacks in his political endeavours despite his ambition to win either a state assembly or parliamentary election, his efforts, including the formation of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party in Tamil Nadu, have been largely unsuccessful. He initially relied on his screen glamour fame and fan base from his acting career to sway voters, but this strategy proved to be a disappointment.

From the outset, Haasan positioned MNM against the Dravidian parties, particularly the DMK. However, his past eagerness to secure a parliamentary seat seemed to contradict this stance, leading MNM to be perceived as a secondary option aligned with the very parties it aimed to oppose. This contradiction caused frustration within the party ranks, with some members defecting to more established political entities.

MNM, initiated in 2018, entered the political arena by contesting in two significant battles, notably the 2019 Lok Sabha General Elections. Despite contesting solo across all 36 seats, its performance resulted in a modest 3.72% vote share, with a majority of its candidates failing to retain their deposits. Subsequent efforts in the 2021 State Legislative Assembly elections saw MNM forming the People First Alliance in coalition with parties like IJK, AISMK, TNJK, JDS, among others. However, this endeavor fell short of expectations, yielding no substantial gains.

Digging A Grave For Himself

When all the attempts failed Finally, Kamal Haasan shifted its allegiance towards Congress, extending support to EVKS Elangovan’s campaign during the by-elections in the Erode East constituency. Subsequently, there were intense behind-the-scenes negotiations regarding his potential inclusion in the DMK-Congress alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Furthermore, he actively participated in Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and was invited to the swearing-in ceremony of the Congress Chief Minister in Karnataka. Consequently, many anticipated his inclusion in the Congress-led I.N.D.I.Alliance.

Regarding seat allocation for Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, it was anticipated that they would support the Congress party nationally and secure up to 4 seats. However, Haasan’s exclusion from the negotiation talks left Maiam activists discontented. While there were expectations atleast Maiam would secure 2 seats in the DMK alliance, ultimately, no Lok Sabha seats were allocated to Haasan’s party, and only one Rajya Sabha seat was granted, much to the dismay of his supporters.

Expressing disappointment, several leaders within the Makkal Needhi Maiam criticized Haasan’s decision, arguing that they should have been allotted at least one of the 9 seats given to the Congress party in Tamil Nadu. Haasan, who canceled overseas shooting for his film ‘Thug Life” to focus on the election, has been seen in Chennai for  3 weeks but has refrained from participating in significant political events. Notably, he was not invited to the recent I.N.D.I Alliance general meeting attended by Rahul Gandhi.

As soon as Congress sidelined Kamal Haasan, deeming him and his party more of a potential burden than an ally, he redirected his attention towards the DMK. The DMK’s inclusive approach in accommodating various parties led him to feel marginalized, as he was offered only a Rajya Sabha seat, rendering him and his party seemingly ineffective. Despite his initial defiance, symbolized by his election Ad throwing torchlight and breaking the TV, where he vowed not to align with the DMK, he eventually found himself campaigning for the very party. Below are instances where Kamal Haasan campaigned for the DMK, VCK and CPI neglecting the Congress.

March 29 – Erode – DMK
March 30 – Salem – DMK
April 2 – Trichy – DMK
April 3 – Chidambaram – VCK
April 6 – Sriperumbudur, Chennai – DMK
April 7 – Chennai – DMK
April 10 – Madurai – CPI(M)
April 11 – Thoothukudi – DMK
April 14 – Tirupur – CPI
April 15 – Coimbatore – DMK
April 16 – Pollachi – DMK

Will Kamal Haasan is angry on Congress this list shed light the anger towards congress

Although critics warned that Kamal’s endorsement of the DMK-Congress coalition in the 2023 by-elections could spell the demise of both him and his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, from Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, he persisted with his choice. Despite Kamal citing the decision as being backed by consensus within the party’s executive committee, dissent has emerged among party members, as evidenced by protests against promotional materials in several districts, particularly in Madurai. Critics drew comparisons between this move and Vice President Mahendran’s switch to the DMK following the assembly elections.

Now, Kamal Haasan finds his decisions facing severe ridicule on social media, with all these setbacks tracing back to the very party he once disdained. Why did Kamal Haasan, originally an actor, choose to start a party in the first place?

Kamal Haasan’s political journey can be likened to the Tamil proverbial story of “Ilavu Kaatha Killi,” where the parrot guards the cotton-bearing tree, not knowing it won’t yield fruit but only cotton. Despite the parrot’s hope and dedication, it ultimately faces disappointment when the cotton doesn’t ripen into something edible.

Upon the announcement of implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 by the central government on 11 March 2024, immediate turmoil ensued in Tamil Nadu, particularly from the Dravidian parties. This response was not unprecedented, but the situation took a new turn when actor Vijay, a recent entrant into politics who revealed his party’s name just last week, joined the fray.

Vijay faced significant criticism as there is a recurring pattern in Tamil Nadu politics where newly launched parties, despite declaring a “My Way Is New Alternative” akin to Rajinikanth’s famous dialogue, often align themselves closely with the established mother-ship Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). This trend was exemplified recently when Kamal Haasan, the leader of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party, made a notable U-turn by forming an alliance with the DMK.

An old video of a devoted fan of Vijay visiting the residence of the actor on Casuarina Drive Street, ECR Neelankarai, Chennai went viral on social media platform X.  In a heartfelt display of admiration, the fan reverently approached the imposing door like gate. Kneeling down and prostrating, he expressed his devotion while acknowledging the presence of a CCTV camera. With deep affection, he conveyed his love for the actor, once again kneeling down in a manner reminiscent of worship in a church. The fan folded his hands in reverence towards the CCTV camera and concluded this unique homage by tenderly flying kiss to the camera.

The online community is questioning Vijay, the actor-turned-politician, who has strategically installed a an imposing gate at his residence to restrict access and maintain privacy. However, it seems he may not be aware that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) explicitly states that entry into India requires permission.

Here are some videos of the gate at Vijay’s house. Fans are seen taking pictures in front of the imposing gate.

This video shows Vijay’s home as well from outside – when the gate opened to allow Vijay who came in his BMW X4 to enter.

In this video, the YouTuber states that if one wants to have a look at Vijay’s house, they can only see the imposing gate and the compound wall.

This observation arises as Vijay, through his official party Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam’s X handle, shared a statement. “Any law like the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) is not acceptable in an environment where all the people of the country are living in social harmony. The rulers should give an assurance that they will not implement this law in Tamil Nadu.”

Critics argue that Vijay who has decided to enter public life is keeping his fans and followers at bay. They wonder if he will be an inaccessible politician for the masses.

Here’s another instance where netizens connected and questioned Vijay’s stand on the CAA. Back in 2021, Vijay filed a petition challenging entry tax on his 2012 Rolls Royce Ghost. The petition was dismissed by the Madras High Court. The court ruled that Vijay, a renowned actor, should promptly pay the tax and imposed a ₹1 lakh fine. Despite reportedly paying the import duty, he faced registration issues due to unpaid entry tax. The court highlighted the extraordinary tax avoidance, emphasizing that, as a public figure, Vijay should comprehend the significance of adhering to tax regulations.

Netizens wondered if he was aware of the implications of the CAA on persecuted minorities of the 3 neighbouring nations. It is noteworthy that his short press release indicated his lack of awareness on the subject.

The recent surge in trolling directed at actor Vijay has placed his fans, particularly the younger generation who understand the situation, in a challenging position. Despite their efforts to support him, they find it difficult to do so, given the statements made by their leader. The politician, expected to have open communication with the public, is now being mocked for having such a huge gate. Meanwhile, amidst ongoing drug busts, the aspiring leader remains conspicuously silent with no official statements released. The question circulating on social media is whether TVK is becoming another MNM.

Kamal Haasan,  a full-time actor, part-time politician, and leader of the political party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), finds himself amidst criticism, ridicule, and trolling on various social media platforms. This is due to his formal declaration of aligning himself with the ruling DMK party for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, despite having previously criticized them as thieves and looters of Tamil Nadu. The video of his 2018 speech during the party launch is currently gaining traction.

The political party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), established by Kamal Haasan six years ago in Madurai on 21 February 2018, was inaugurated with the concept of “Maiam,” meaning center. At the launch, Kamal Haasan expressed his vision for the party to remain centrist, avoiding alignment with any specific left or right ideologies and refraining from forming alliances with prominent Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu, such as DMK or AIADMK. However, in a notable shift, he has now aligned with the DMK for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections. It is important to note that this alliance is not for contesting Lok Sabha seats but rather for the Rajya Sabha elections, where nominated MPs are sent from the state. Despite this alignment, Kamal Haasan secured only one ticket for the Rajya Sabha elections.

Makkal Needhi Maiam released an official statement on the microblogging platform X, stating that, “In the 2024 parliamentary elections, the Makkal Needhi Maiam Party will campaign in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry constituencies in support of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance. A seat has been reserved for the People’s Justice Center in the Rajya Sabha elections to be held in 2025.”

Previous stance of Kamal Haasan:

Kamal Haasan personally released a statement on his official social media account, expressing criticism towards the ruling Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu regarding the escalating debts in the state stating, “Every man, woman, child & even an unborn child of Thamizh Nadu will have to bear a debt of Rs.57,000. The 2 Dravidian parties who ruled & swindled alternatively are responsible. Let’s join hands & put an end to their looting. Come, let’s forge a wealthy, debt free Thamizh Nadu.”

Subsequently, he shared an MGR song, suggesting his anticipation and readiness to challenge the Dravidian parties in the forthcoming assembly elections. “Some people, for want, need, life, convenience, will catch legs of others… There is no honor in it, there is no shame in it He always catches the tail. Future will come, My duty will come, I will abolish this gangs game

Even at the inaugural event of his political party and in subsequent interviews, he consistently reiterated his commitment to removing the Dravidian parties from the political landscape. Following the inauguration of the party, during a session addressing queries from party members, the presenter posed the question, “Will you publicly declare that we will not ally with the parties and their affiliates that you have identified as corrupt?”

Kamal instantly replied, “Lets announce it, just think of this, We started a party like this, convene a meeting, and none of us knows how many years or months for the election. Instead of doing all this, we could have join a big party, bent a little and bow that’s enough, could have gone like that, why didn’t we go like that? I had the hope that it would not blossom into a democracy, that is why I dared and they said that if I fall from this, I will never be able to get up, even now Tamil Nadu is like that, unable to get up. That’s why we have taken this decision we will be one of them.

Hence, we can surely promise that we will not ally ourself with baseless unworthy people,  boldly swear that we will not ally our self with thieves. If we found that they are criminals, we promise that we will not cooperate, this is not an election promise but a promise given at the beginning of the party.”

The BJP in Tamil Nadu engaged in relentless trolling of Kamal Haasan, using his past comments and speeches critical of Dravidian parties. They mocked him for receiving just one ticket for the Rajya Sabha, humorously stating in Tamil, “For this, the cotton bag could’ve been in the godown,” implying a humorous reference to a comic clip of Santhanam of an unimpressive outcome.

The Tamil Nadu BJP has also unveiled another video mocking Kamal Haasan, asserting that the “U.P Nayagan Paradox” on the reel hero aligns with the real villain. In this video, the TN BJP highlights apparent contradictions in Kamal Haasan’s stance, emphasizing that while he advocates for secularism, he forms alliances with politicians deemed anti-Hindu. Haasan, who advocates for a drug-free society, aligns himself with individuals associated with the drug mafia. Additionally, it points out a contradiction in Haasan’s anti-corruption stance, alleging alliances with politicians accused of corruption. The video also questions Haasan’s commitment to fighting terrorism, claiming associations with those who support the release of terrorists. Lastly, it underscores the paradox that Haasan, a proponent of Jallikattu, forms alliances with individuals who were in power when the sport was banned.

It is to be noted that Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), under the leadership of Kamal Haasan, has encountered difficulties in all electoral endeavors it faced. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections (17th Lok Sabha), MNM contested 37 seats but failed to secure any, receiving a mere 0.40% of the votes, totaling 1,613,708. The outcome was a loss. In the 2021 State Legislative Assembly Elections, MNM faced similar challenges in Tamil Nadu (16th Assembly), contesting 180 seats with zero victories and securing 2.62% of the votes (1,210,667), resulting in a loss. The party also contested 22 seats in Puducherry (15th Assembly), with no wins and 1.89% of the votes (15,835), leading to another loss. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, MNM contended on 40 seats, generating speculation about a potential alliance with the Congress. Although the party achieved a vote share of 3.72% in the contested seats, it faced difficulties in rural areas. Notably, all candidates lost their deposits.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, MNM contested in 142 constituencies, declared no alliance with DMK or AIADMK, and failed to secure any seats. Kamal Haasan himself suffered defeat in Coimbatore South to BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan. Later, MNM allied with the Congress to support EVKS Elangovan in a by-election. Despite these challenges and setbacks, Makkal Needhi Maiam remains an active participant in the political landscape, continually adjusting its strategies and alliances in anticipation of future elections.

Regarding the imminent 2024 Lok Sabha elections (18th Lok Sabha), the decision to abandon its prior ideologies and align itself with the DMK solely for a Rajya Sabha seat is seen as Kamal’s reluctance to face the electorate and an anticipated acknowledgment of inevitable defeat. Opting for a nominated Member of Parliament (MP) rather than pursuing victory through popular vote has elicited significant criticism from within his party and beyond.

The choice made by Kamal Haasan, the leader of the MNM party, faced significant criticism and mockery from social media users.
