The Madras High Court has directed the police not to initiate any harsh measures against Madurai Adheenam in connection with a case filed over alleged inflammatory and provocative statements. The controversy arose after he claimed that a road accident involving his vehicle was actually an assassination attempt, supposedly carried out by individuals wearing skull caps and beards, with a possible link to Pakistan.

The incident occurred while he was en route to attend the Saiva Siddhanta conference held in May at Kattankulathur, near Chennai. Following this, a petition was filed and a FIR registered by the Cyber Crime Wing of the Greater Chennai City Police lodged by advocate R. Rajendiran, on 24 June, citing various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These include Section 192 (intentional provocation to incite riots), Section 196(1)(a) (inciting religious hatred), Section 353(1)(b) (spreading public mischief), and Section 353(2) (issuing false statements to fuel communal tensions).

Madurai Adheenam approached the High Court seeking to have the case quashed. The matter was heard by Justice Satish Kumar, who granted the police time until 15 September to submit their response. In the interim, the court ordered that no stringent action be taken against Adheenam.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday strongly criticised the Madurai Adheenam for making what it termed “unnecessary” and provocative remarks by claiming that a minor road accident involving his vehicle was an assassination attempt, allegedly carried out by men wearing skull caps and sporting beards, and possibly linked to Pakistan.

Hearing a petition seeking to quash a First Information Report (FIR) registered against the ascetic Harihara Gnanasambanda Desigar, Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy questioned the inflammatory nature of the statements.

“Are the people of Tamil Nadu so naive to get provoked by ‘unnecessary’ remarks made by Madurai Adheenam who had termed a minor road accident as an alleged assassination attempt against him, suspected involvement of Pakistan and claimed that the alleged assassins were wearing skull caps and sporting beards?” the judge asked.

The petition was filed to quash an FIR registered by the cyber crime wing of Greater Chennai City Police, based on a complaint from advocate R. Rajendiran. The FIR, dated June 24, invoked multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 192 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause rioting), 196(1)(a) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief), and 353(2) (making false statements to create communal enmity).

The court viewed CCTV footage of the May 2 incident, played on a tablet by Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) R. Muniyapparaj, and noted that it was in fact the Adheenam’s vehicle that appeared to have been driven rashly.

“A major accident had been averted because of the sagacity of the other car driver who had pulled the brakes at the right moment,” the judge observed.

Continuing his sharp remarks, Justice Chakravarthy questioned the communal tone of the allegations made by the petitioner. “Merely because the occupants of the other car were Muslims, the petitioner appears to have escalated the issue. Are they not your brethren? Are they also not as much Indian as you are?” he asked the Adheenam’s counsel, Ramaswamy Meyyappan.

In defence, Meyyappan argued that the petitioner had been prompted to speak by mediapersons at a private event in Chennai and had not explicitly named any religion in his remarks. He also pointed out that the FIR was registered nearly two months after the statements were allegedly made.

However, APP Muniyapparaj contended that multiple protests had erupted across Tamil Nadu in response to the Adheenam’s remarks and that the offences committed were cognisable. He added that several private complaints had also been filed.

The judge, while not dismissing the seriousness of the allegations entirely, expressed concern about the allocation of police resources. He stated that such resources could be more effectively used to investigate serious criminal cases.

Justice Chakravarthy granted the police time until August 14 to file a counter-affidavit in response to the quash petition.

Separately, the police have reportedly urged the court to cancel the anticipatory bail granted to the Madurai Adheenam in this case.

The Principal District and Sessions Court in Chennai has granted anticipatory bail to Shri Harihara Gnanasambandha Desiga Paramachariar Swamigal, the 293rd Madathipathy of the Madurai Adheenam, in connection with a case filed against him under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for allegedly making inflammatory statements during a media interaction.

The case, being investigated by the Central Crime Branch (Cyber Crime, East Zone), was filed following a press interaction held on 3 May 2025, in which the Swamigal spoke about an alleged road accident that occurred near Ulundurpet on 2 May 2025 while en route to the 6th International Saiva Siddhanta Conference at SRM University.

According to the petitioner, his vehicle was hit by another car that lacked number plates and was driven by individuals “appearing to follow the Islamic faith.” During the press meet, he expressed fear of a potential threat to his life and speculated about the religious identity of the occupants of the other vehicle. These remarks, later circulated on social media, sparked criticism and led to allegations of inciting communal tension.

The learned City Public Prosecutor (CPP) opposed the bail plea, arguing that the Swamigal had irresponsibly linked the incident to a communal conspiracy and referred to Pakistan’s involvement, causing public unrest. The prosecution submitted CCTV footage of the accident, claiming it contradicted the Swamigal’s version and showed his vehicle was at fault. The footage also formed the basis for a separate case registered at Ulundurpet Police Station against the Adheenam’s driver.

However, Principal Sessions Judge S. Karthikeyan, after reviewing the footage and video of the press interaction, observed that the petitioner had made “exaggerated statements” but did not appear to have intended to spread communal hatred. The court remarked that the media had posed leading questions and provoked responses from the Swamigal, effectively contributing to the controversy.

“There is no prima facie evidence that the petitioner had any intention to incite communal violence,” the court held, noting that the complaint was not filed by members of the Islamic community but by a practicing lawyer, R. Rajendiran. The judge further stated that any determination of whether the petitioner’s remarks constituted an offence under Sections 192, 196(1)(a), 353(1)(b), and 353(2) BNS would require trial.

While granting anticipatory bail, the court acknowledged the petitioner’s age (67), his religious stature, and his willingness to cooperate with the investigation via video conferencing. The court imposed conditions including non-interference in the investigation, prohibition on tampering with evidence, and a requirement to remain within his place of residence unless summoned otherwise.

Advocates Ramaswamy Meyyappan and Viyyash Kumar G.V. appeared on behalf of the Swamigal. The bail was granted with directions that he appear before the XI Metropolitan Magistrate within 15 days and furnish sureties.

Madurai Adheenam has alleged a conspiracy to cause a car accident aimed at taking his life, while also criticizing the state government and political parties for their hypocrisy in blindly supporting minorities and neglecting the majority. He further pointed out the government’s failure to act on his concerns, despite claims by ministers of treating all religions equally.

In an interview, Harihara Gnanasambandha Desika Paramarcharya Swamigal (Madurai Adheenam) shared the details of the incident, “We had completed the puja in Madurai at 5:30 in the morning. We were scheduled to attend the Saiva Siddhanta conference in Chennai and left around 6:00 AM, traveling by car towards Chennai. When we reached Ulundurpet, a car that had just demolished a roadblock at a turning point crashed into ours. The impact was so severe that I fainted in shock. When I regained consciousness, I saw that the driver of the car that hit us was wearing a cap and had a beard. Moreover, the car had no number plate. I didn’t file a complaint with the police because I knew nothing would be done. Instead, I’ve filed a complaint with Lord Shiva. Here, privileges are only extended to minorities, and filing a complaint with the police would yield no action.”

Criticizing the DMK government’s favoritism towards minorities, the Mutt leader said, “The government is clearly favoring one religion, right? They are prioritizing one religion. Yes, they are researching Muslim festivals and offering additional concessions to minorities. All political parties do this. Now, with the Waqf Board, all parties are speaking out and condemning it. But I won’t go into all that; I will focus solely on the religious aspect. You mock the Vibhuti, and you ridicule the Thiruman. When a state minister takes the oath, what do they say? They claim that all religions should be treated equally, but they provide special concessions to minorities and need only minorities. Don’t you also need the majority’s votes?”

The Tamil Nadu BJP and Hindu Makkal Katchi have demanded that Madurai Adheenam be provided with proper security. Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath stated, “Madurai Adheenam, who survived by the grace of Mother Meenakshi Sokkanathar, has claimed that there was a conspiracy to kill him. He has vowed to take this issue to Prime Minister Modi.”

Madurai Adheenam has long been an outspoken advocate for Hindu rights, working towards the protection of Sri Lankan Tamils, the recovery of temple properties, the promotion of Saivism, and Tamil development. As a result, he has often faced threats and criticism. For this reason, he must be provided with police security.

Tamil Nadu BJP Spiritual Wing Leader Nachiyappan also condemned the DMK government’s failure to secure spiritual leaders, stating, “Under the DMK government, there is no security for temples or religious figures, and they are openly declaring their intent to destroy Sanatana Dharma.”

Regarding the accident, Nachiyappan said, “The incident that occurred when Madurai Adheenam was traveling by car appears to be part of a planned conspiracy. By God’s grace, no harm came to the Adheenam. Those responsible for the incident should be arrested immediately, and Madurai Adheenam must be provided with proper security.”

The vehicle carrying Srilasree Arunagirinatha Gnanasambantha Desika Paramacharya Swamigal, the current Mahasannidhanam of the Madurai Adheenam, was involved in a road accident near Ulundurpet early this morning, sparking concern and speculation about a possible conspiracy.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred while the Mahasannidhanam was en route to Chennai to attend a Saiva conference organized by the Dharmapuri Adheenam at SRM University. Near Ulundurpet, a car trailing the Mahasannidhanam’s vehicle allegedly rammed into it from behind and fled the scene without stopping. A formal complaint has been filed with the local police station in Ulundurpet.

Though the Mahasannidhanam sustained only minor injuries, the vehicle was visibly damaged. Sources close to the Adheenam expressed suspicion that the accident may not have been entirely accidental, hinting at a potential conspiracy. Police have begun an investigation to ascertain the cause and whether there was any malicious intent behind the crash.

Following the incident, the Mahasannidhanam is expected to proceed to Kanchipuram, where he will stay at the Adheenam Mana before attending tomorrow’s Saiva conference in Chennai.

Several disciples and devotees, upon hearing about the accident, contacted the Adheenam to inquire about his well-being. Devotees expressed relief that, by the grace of God, the Mahasannidhanam was safe and unharmed.

It is noteworthy to mention that Madurai Adheenam has been a vocal supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Hindutva cause.

On On 25 January 2025, Madurai city police stopped Madurai Adheenam pontiff, Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Swamigal, from visiting the Kasi Viswanathar temple on Thirupparankundram hill. In a separate incident, they also prevented BJP Minority Morcha National Secretary Syed Ibrahim and his supporters from visiting the dargah on the same hill, citing potential law and order concerns.

Tensions had been rising in Thirupparankundram following a recent incident where DMK ally and IUML Ramanathapuram MP Navas Kani posted a photo of his supporters eating cooked non-vegetarian food while visiting the Sikandar dargah at the foothills of sacred Hindu site Thirupparankundram hills demanding the right to perform animal sacrifices on the hill. In response, BJP and Hindu organizations condemned the MP’s actions, calling them disrespectful and provocative toward Hindus disturbing the social fabric of the area.

In this context, Syed Ibrahim and other BJP members attempted to visit the dargah, but the police intervened. Ibrahim questioned why Navas Kani was allowed to pray at the dargah without obstruction. The police briefly detained him and his supporters.

Later that day, the Madurai Adheenam pontiff, Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Swamigal speaking to the media, said, “I planned to visit the Kasi Viswanathar Temple on Thirupparankundram Hill today for darshan, but the police stopped me. I think the police are worried that people from other religions might cause trouble for me, but I was only going there to pray. How can they call it Sikandar Hill? It is the Murugan Hill. All the literature refers to it as the Murugan Hill. Christianity and Islam originated from foreign lands. We respect and accommodate their beliefs, and they should also learn to respect and accommodate ours. In our temple, people do not bring or consume non-vegetarian food… Except for the BJP, no other political party has raised their voice on this issue because they fear losing minority votes. That is why they remain silent.”

Commenting on the provocative move by DMK ally and IUML Ramanathapuram MP, who posted a picture of himself and his supporters eating non-vegetarian food near the temple foothills, the Madurai Adheenam pontiff questioned, “When there’s a Shaivite temple at the foothill, should you do this? No one questions the worship there; let them practice. The issue arose because they ate meat—is it a butcher shop?”

In a shocking development the DMK government in Tamil Nadu has banned Madurai Adheenam pontiff Sri La Sri Harihara Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Swamigal from going to the Kasi Viswanathar Temple that is located on top of the Thiruparankundram Hill.

Thiruparankundram Hill, a site of immense religious and historical significance, has become a focal point of controversy and sacrilege.

Islamist groups have been demanding to perform ‘qurbani’ – the ritual sacrifice of goats and roosters – at the dargah located on the temple hill, when the entire hill belongs to the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple.

Manapparai DMK MLA Abdul Samad has been accused of illegally conducting a survey around the temple and conspiring to take control of the hill with the help of SDPI (the political arm of the banned terror outfit Popular Front of India).

Further exacerbating the situation, ‘unidentified miscreants’ have defaced the ancient Jain caves on the hill by painting them green, an act seen as deliberate vandalism against a heritage site of immense cultural and spiritual value. These incidents have sparked strong condemnation from various quarters, highlighting the need to protect the sanctity and heritage of this sacred hill.

Adding fuel to the fire, DMK-ally IUML MP Navas Kani who is also the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board went with his supporters who had non-vegetarian biryani at the foothill of the temple hill drawing widespread outrage for violating the sanctity of the site. In a video that was shared on social media, he can be seen intimidating police officials to allow them to have the non-vegetarian biryani that they have brought with them.

On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu police has banned the pontiff of Madurai Adheenam from visiting the Kasi Viswanathar Temple that is located on top of the Thiruparankundram hill.

The 293rd pontiff the of Madurai Adheenam, Sri Gnanasambandha Desika Paramacharya, congratulated Narendra Modi on being sworn in as Prime Minister for the third consecutive term. He also congratulated all the election winners in Tamil Nadu, including Seeman and Annamalai who secured a great number of votes.

The Adheenam, speaking to the press stated that he had a couple of requests.  He said, “I congratulate all those who won from Tamil Nadu. All those who lost also garnered quite a number of votes. Seeman also garnered a lot of votes and so also Annamalai. The people of Tamil Nadu have voted for everyone. I only have one disappointment with the Tamil people is that not so long ago in Sri Lanka, so many lakhs of people who were killed there have also won. I am disappointed at that development. That is why they cannot rule at the centre. At the same time, it is noteworthy that Narendra Modi built homes for Sri Lankan Tamils. I have two requests to place with Narendra Modi who is the victor. One is that Kachchatheevu was handed over to Sri Lanka long back, I request that we get back to the island and solve the issues faced by the fishermen. If we own Kachchatheevu, we will be able to fish well. We must retrieve the island and unite it with Tamil Nadu.”

The Adheenam mentioned that Katchatheevu has been a longstanding demand, not just an election issue. He expressed confidence that even if Modi leads a coalition government, he will fulfill these two demands regarding Katchatheevu and Tamil Eelam.

He further added, “Secondly, I request that the small percentage of Tamils living in Sri Lanka be protected and a Tamil Eelam must be created. I have these two requests to the Prime Minister of India.”

When prodded about his disappointment, he said, “You know who I am hinting at but I will not say it by myself. Who killed Sri Lankan Tamils? Who sent the army there? You know it, I will not reveal it. I am disappointed at the fact that the Tamil people here supported those who killed the Sri Lankan Tamils, a few have won, you know who it is.”

When asked if he would get an opportunity to meet the Prime Minister, the Madurai Adheenam replied, “Of course, I will meet him, I have to make these requests. I will ask for a separate country for Tamils.”

He acknowledged that the BJP did not win a majority in Tamil Nadu, attributing it to the democratic process where people hold the key to electoral wins. He praised Modi for not dismissing any state government during his tenure, unlike previous governments. The Adheenam lauded Modi for supporting all religions, as evidenced by appointing a woman from the Scheduled Tribe community as President.

Speaking at the Tamil Nadu Dialogues 2023 event at Kumbakonam on , the esteemed Madurai Aadheenam head pontiff Sri Harihara Desika Swamigal and Sri La Sri Suryanar Kovil Aadheenam showered praises on Prime Minister Modi. Ever since our independence, we have had 14 Prime Ministers, but none has shown such profound respect for the Tamil language and culture. Madurai Aadheenam acknowledged how Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embraced the Thirrukural and Thevaram and gave respect to all the Aadheenams by inviting them for the opening ceremony of the new Parliament building.

Madurai Aadheenam Sri Harihara Desika Swamigal listed several reasons for honouring Modi with the Sengol. Firstly, his efforts to clean the Ganges River were acknowledged. Secondly, his renovation of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple was highly appreciated. Thirdly, when many criticized the feasibility of constructing the Ayodhya temple, Madurai Aadheenam said that it was PM Modi who turned it into a tangible reality waiting to be consecrated. Additionally, he said, “Modi’s establishment of a new Parliament symbolizes the decolonisation of our minds, fostering a deeper sense of patriotism as we celebrate our Independence Day. The respect he has shown us will forever be cherished.”

Madurai Aadheenam also accused the Congress government of mishandling the Eelam Tamil issue and highlighted the sufferings endured by the Tamil community. Conversely, he acknowledged Modi’s efforts in providing houses and restoring hope for the Eelam Tamil victims. He pointed out that it is for these reasons that Madurai Aadheenam presented him with the sengol. He called upon the people to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in winning more seats in Tamil Nadu.

Following Madurai Aadheenam’s remarks, Sri La Sri Suryanar Kovil Aadheenam expressed that Prime Minister Modi maintained a close relationship with Tamil Nadu. He cited the Kashi Tamil Sangam and Saurashtra Tamil Sangam events organized by PM Modi. He said, “The opening of the new Parliament witnessed the participation of the Aadheenams from Tamil Nadu, symbolised by the placement of the “Sengol” from 1947 and Modi’s remarkable contributions to Tamil Nadu”. He credited former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for India’s respectable position on the world stage, especially citing the Pokhran nuclear tests. Modi has played a significant role in continuing Vajpayee’s legacy.

Sri La Sri Suryanar Kovil Aadheenam urged citizens to pay their taxes and emphasised the importance of exercising their voting rights to decide who should come to power in this land for the better future of India. He expressed his everlasting gratitude towards PM Modi.

Here’s what PM Modi said in his interaction with Tamil Hindu Aadheenams before the Sengol ceremony.

In yet another attack against the Madurai Adheenam, the DMK in its mouthpiece ‘Murasoli‘ has issued threats to the Saivite Mutt pontiff Sri La Sri Harihara Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Swamigal, in light of his recent comments against the ruling DMK regime.

Quoting a Tamil proverb, the DMK in its mouthpiece equated the pontiff with a frog saying that the Madurai Adheenam head through his speeches and activities is spoiling himself just like how a frog invites the attention of the predators with its croaks.

The editorial piece in the mouthpiece also berated the late 292nd pontiff of the Madurai Adheenam Sri Arunagirinathar saying that his ‘joker-like’ activities brought disrepute to the Adheenam founded by ‘Thirunavukkarasar’.

It is to be noted that the Madurai Adheenam was founded by Tamil Saivite Sage Sri Thirugnanasambandar and not Thirunavukkarasar (also known as Appar) as mentioned by Murasoli.

The glaring error made by DMK mouthpiece Murasoli which says Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) founded the Madurai Adheenam. It was Sage Thirugnanasambandar who founded the Madurai Adheenam.

The mouthpiece also went on to cast aspersions that the late Sri Arunagirinathar Swamigal took money and made fugitive godman Nithyananda a pontiff of the Adheenam.

It also goes on to cite when Sri Arunagirinathar Swamigal exalted the late AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa as the future Prime Minister saying that the pontiff bought disrepute to the Adheenam.

“The current pontiff of the Madurai Adheenam Harihara Desigar Gnansambandam is proving to be no less than Arunagiri through his absurd speeches. His speeches and activities are such that it is angering the embodiment of patience, devotion, humility, HR&CE Minister Mr. Sekar Babu.” Murasoli in the editorial said.

It also goes on to explain how DMK Minister Sekar Babu intervened and allowed the Pattina Pravesam event of Dharmapuram Adheenam to happen. Earlier, the BJP and other Hindu organizations had risen in protest against the Mayiladuthurai Collector’s order calling for a ban of the age old tradition of the Dharmapuram Adheenam based on a petition by “Periyar”ist outfits, following which the DMK government uplifted the ban.

“While many are appreciating the Tamil Nadu government, the Chief Minister and the HR&CE Minister for taking decisions with a vision to make Tamil Nadu a peaceful place where people of all religions exist together as brothers, the Madurai Adheenam is speaking inculcating hate like a lunatic.”, the DMK mouthpiece said.

“The Madurai Adheenam is in Tamil Nadu. There are many Saiva Adheenams here. They are all going about their work without agitation. They’re to be appreciated. But the Madurai Adheenam is crossing limits. He should realize that there is a limit to patience.”, the DMK mouthpiece warned.

Citing the incident when Jayalalithaa had put Kanchi Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal behind bars, the editorial piece in Murasoli in a veiled threat said “What happened to Chinnavaal (taking a sly dig at Brahmins), Jayendrar during Jayalalithaa regime? We hope that today’s Madurai Adheenam remembers the incident when the ‘Mahaguru’ was made to count the jail bars. He was not just arrested and sent to jail. The many incidents that followed where his reputation was damaged, we hope the Madurai Adheenam realizes that. The Madurai Adheenam should not think that these incidents are being cited to threaten him”.

Earlier, in May 2022, the Madurai Adheenam had claimed that the ruling party was threatening him. He had said that he would be reporting to the Prime Minister and Home Minister about the same.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Tamil Nadu, he met the Madurai Adheenam briefly.

Pointing to this, Murasoli said “To the Madurai who keeps threatening that he will inform the Prime Minister and Home Minister, we’re reminding him this for his understanding. He (Madurai Adheenam) is in a position where he has to go and meet the Prime Minister. But Kanchi Sankaracharya was in a position where the Prime Minister, President and others sought appointment to meet him. Madurai Adheenam should think about what happened to such a Sankracharya and tread cautiously. The Madurai Adheenam is a ‘zero’ when compared to the political clout, media clout and devotee clout that Kanchi Sankracharya had. Don’t think that you (Madurai Adheenam) can talk anything under the garb of religious leader.”

The DMK mouthpiece said that the Madurai Adheenam should stop talking that will impact the law and order situation in the state.

Quoting BJP leader H. Raja’s remark about MK Stalin, the DMK mouthpiece warned the Madurai Adheenam that “Stalin is more dangerous than Karunanidhi”. BJP leader H. Raja had called MK Stalin more dangerous to the Hindu faith than the late DMK patriarch Karunanidhi while speaking at a rally.

This editorial by the DMK’s mouthpiece has once again drawn the battlelines between the ruling regime and the Saivite Mutts in Tamil Nadu.

Many on social media are lashing out at the DMK for threatening the head of a Mutt sacred to the Hindus and for trying to muzzle voice opposed to the regime.
