In a remarkable contrast to typical public gatherings especially in Tamil Nadu, the recently held Murugan Devotees Conference in Madurai organized by the Hindu Munnani has received widespread praise not only for its massive turnout but also for the discipline and cleanliness maintained throughout the event. What stood out even more was an unexpected observation from TASMAC employees that liquor sales remained unchanged during the conference, unlike the usual surge seen during political rallies or other public events.

Typically, large-scale political meetings in Madurai bring in thousands of people, many of whom are transported in buses and vans arranged by organizers. Often, such gatherings involve daily-wage attendees, mobilized by agents. These events usually lead to increased liquor consumption, evident in the heavy sales at TASMAC outlets, and leave behind a trail of litter plastic waste and empty liquor bottles scattered across the grounds.

However, during the recent Murugan Devotees Conference, things unfolded very differently. Despite a crowd of lakhs, the venue remained pristine. No liquor bottles, no plastic trash just a well-managed, clean space. Even after the event ended, volunteers from Hindu Munnani and other groups stayed behind to clean and organize the area. By the next morning, Amma Thidal, the venue was spotless, with all chairs neatly arranged and not a trace of the massive crowd that had gathered.

No TASMAC Sales?

TASMAC officials confirmed that they anticipated a spike in liquor sales, as is usually the case during such large gatherings. Shops in both divisions of Madurai—North and South—had stocked up in expectation. Yet, the sales data told a different story. On 14 and 15 June 2025 – 9,415 and 10,900 bottles were sold, respectively. On 21 and 22 June 2025, which coincided with the conference, the sales were 9,140 and 11,200 bottles—figures that show no significant increase.

TASMAC officials remarked, “Normally, political events lead to a noticeable jump in liquor sales in the surrounding areas. But during the Murugan devotees’ gathering, we saw no such spike. The devotees stayed away from liquor shops, reflecting the event’s spiritual focus and disciplined crowd. If this had been a political rally, the revenue from alcohol sales would have been substantially higher.”

Aside from TASMAC outlets, around 80 private establishments—clubs, bars, and hotels—operating in the Madurai district also reported no noticeable rise in liquor sales during the event.

This disciplined and dignified behavior by Hindu devotees has set a new benchmark for public gatherings, both in terms of crowd conduct and cleanliness. It has highlighted the difference between faith-driven events and typical political mobilizations, with the former emphasizing spiritual focus and social responsibility over indulgence.

In a series of shocking incidents, three separate cases of violence have shaken the town of Rajapalayam.

The first incident revolves around 32-year-old Saravanan, son of Ramasamy, a resident of Duraisamypuram in Rajapalayam. Saravanan, who is unmarried, worked as an employee at a government TASMAC outlet under the Rajapalayam Railway Over Bridge. Allegations suggest that he was involved in the illegal sale of liquor in the black market in the same area. It is reported that more than 10 individuals from the Duraisamypuram area were engaged in similar illegal activities.

Tensions have been brewing between these two parties due to disputes over the sale of liquor. Saravanan, taking advantage of his position at the bar, reportedly hoarded large quantities of liquor bottles and sold them in the black market during the closure of TASMAC shops on government holidays and important days.

Last night, a clash erupted between the two parties as they fought over the distribution of liquor bottles. Enraged by Saravanan’s alleged illegal activities, members of the opposing party, under the influence of alcohol and ganja, attacked and hacked Saravanan to death.

In another disturbing incident, a youth was hacked to death in the Mudugudi area under the South police station last night, following a social dispute. Additionally, a young man attempted to set a woman on fire by pouring kerosene on her in an unrelated incident.

These three incidents, all occurring on the same day, highlight the state of law and order in Tamil Nadu.

In a tragic incident in Krishnagiri, a young man lost his life while another sustained severe injuries after being attacked by a group of individuals under the influence of ganja and alcohol. The incident occurred in Thinnakazhani village near Krishnagiri.

Chinnathambi, a resident of Thinnakazhani village, confronted a group of youngsters who were consuming ganja and liquor near his house. According to eyewitnesses, Chinnathambi approached the group and questioned their presence, expressing concerns about recent cattle thefts in the area.

A heated argument ensued between Chinnathambi and the group of youngsters, leading to a scuffle. Chinnathambi’s son, Vetri, intervened, but the situation escalated quickly as the group attacked both Chinnathambi and Vetri.

Later, around 1 am, the attackers returned to Chinnathambi’s house on two-wheelers armed with weapons, including a bottle of rolling wood. Vetri’s friend, Karthik, who heard the commotion, attempted to intervene. However, his attempt to stop the attackers proved fatal as he was attacked and succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Karthik’s father, Devaraj, who rushed to the scene upon hearing about the attack on his son, was also attacked and sustained severe head injuries. The attackers then fled the scene.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the area, prompting a swift response from the Krishnagiri taluk police. The police arrived at the scene, recovered Karthik’s body, and sent it to Krishnagiri Government Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination.

Devaraj, who was critically injured in the attack, has been admitted to the hospital for medical treatment. Karthik, the victim, worked as an electrician, had recently celebrated his first wedding anniversary, and his wife is currently pregnant.

Here are a few instances where lives have been lost due to the ganja in Tamil Nadu:

In a gap of just 2 days just a few days ago, atleast 8-10 news reports of ganja seizure and other acts of assault and vandalism have been reported in Tamil Nadu. You can read further here.

Again in April 2024, in one incident, six individuals on a two-wheeler clashed with a government bus in Kumbakonam, assaulting the driver when he refused them entry. Journalists documenting the assault were also attacked. Police arrested two suspects. In another case in Kannagi Nagar, a drug dealer and two under the influence instigated chaos, resulting in police intervention. The dealer bit an officer, while another wielded a knife. Locals intervened, aiding the police. Three individuals were arrested, highlighting the escalating issue of drug-related violence in the region.

Disturbing reports are emerging suggesting that Tamil Nadu is resembling Colombia in terms of drug-related issues. There is a visible prevalence of ganja, heroin, cocaine, and alcohol consumption among the youth in the state. Recent seizures of these substances have been substantial, indicating Tamil Nadu’s role as a central hub for international trafficking. The easy accessibility of these drugs has led to concerning behavior among the youth, including instances of public assault and being incapacitated by intense intoxication. Witnessing such scenes is truly lamentable.

In just a few days, dozens of reports of seizure of drugs, instances of youth squatting intoxicated on the streets have become prevalent. Here is a compilation of a few such reports.

A businessman has been apprehended for concealing drugs valued at ₹111 crore in Pudukottai district, allegedly with the intent to smuggle them through international waters for distribution to foreign countries.

Amir Sultan, originally from SP Pattinam in Ramanathapuram district, was managing a shrimp farm on leased land in Vengangudi near Mimisal, Pudukkottai district. On 10 March 2024, Acting on this tip, Trichy Customs Intelligence Unit officials discovered a significant amount of cannabis oil (hashish) and cannabis, totaling 100 kg and 876 kg respectively, intended for smuggling to Sri Lanka from this farm. Additionally, it was found that the farm was operating on government land without authorization. Following this revelation, law enforcement officers and police demolished the warehouse where the drugs were stored and disconnected the power supply to the shrimp farm.

Subsequently, the seized drugs were transferred to the Pudukottai NDPS Special Court and then to the customs office in Trichy for further investigation and legal proceedings. The customs authorities are diligently pursuing inquiries into the origin and trafficking of the ₹111 crore worth of drugs found at the shrimp farm, as well as identifying and apprehending all individuals involved. Amir Sultan, the owner of the shrimp farm had fled, was later apprehended in Trichy by Customs Intelligence officials and subsequently detained, presented before the Pudukottai Special Court, and remanded to judicial custody.

On 25 April 2024, illicit drugs worth ₹35 crore were intercepted at Chennai airport, smuggled by a Cambodian traveler, prompting an investigation into their involvement. The individual arrived via an Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Upon landing, customs officials singled out the Cambodian traveler, who had transited through Malaysia, for questioning due to suspicions.

After a thorough inspection of the passenger’s belongings, authorities uncovered a concealed parcel containing 3.5 kilograms of cocaine. Subsequently, the suspect underwent interrogation in a separate facility to uncover the identities of those associated with the trafficking network and the origins of the illicit substances. While investigators suspect the involvement of an international drug syndicate, they are withholding further details pending ongoing inquiries.

In recent days, the Chennai airport has experienced two significant drug seizures. Just the previous day, on 24 April 2024, officials from the Central Revenue Intelligence Department confiscated 11 kg of Heroin valued at ₹11 crore from a passenger arriving from Qatar. This consecutive sequence of smuggling seizures has caused considerable unrest in the area.

In yet another viral video widely circulated on social media, a man was seen recklessly dancing while intoxicated and speeding on his two-wheeler in the Pallikaranai area. He barely sat on the seat, preferring to sing, dance, and perform comical gestures while navigating through city streets during peak hours, all without wearing a helmet. Fellow commuters recorded the incident and shared it across social media platforms.

On 25 April 2024 in Chennai, law enforcement detained a taxi driver catering to part-time IT workers by peddling ganja, along with apprehending a young woman in connection with the illicit trade possessing 1.3kg ganja. The focus was on unraveling the mechanics of this operation targeting busy IT professionals.

In an apartment complex situated in Choolaimedu Shakti Nagar, Chennai, some unmarried women reside. Concerned neighbors alerted authorities about frequent male visitors to these residences. Acting on these reports, police conducted a raid and were greeted by the pervasive odor of cannabis permeating the entire dwelling. Following an extensive search, officers discovered approximately one and a half kilograms of ganja stashed in a bag. During questioning, a woman named Sharmila, present at the scene, divulged startling details regarding the ganja distribution network aimed at IT employees.

Originating from Pudukkottai, Sharmila is employed at an IT firm in ECR. Living independently without familial support, she developed a rapport with Suresh, a local taxi driver. Seeking solace from her daily grind, Sharmila relied on the ganja provided by Suresh, thereby strengthening their bond. Leveraging this relationship, Suresh, previously confined to local distribution, expanded his operation to supply ganja to IT companies using his taxi service.

As police pieced together this narrative through Sharmila’s testimony, they apprehended Suresh for questioning. Subsequent investigations revealed his involvement in smuggling ganja from foreign states for local distribution. Despite Suresh’s admission of lucrative gains from supplying IT professionals, he adamantly denied any collusion with Sharmila.

Nevertheless, authorities discovered a weighing scale at Sharmila’s residence, implicating her in the storage of ganja. Consequently, both Suresh and Sharmila were arrested, charged respectively with ganja smuggling and possession, and presented before the court for further legal proceedings.

This incident, where a taxi driver’s unlawful activities led to his incarceration and a young woman’s association resulted in her arrest, stirred considerable unrest within the community.

Footage capturing a disturbing incident of looting and atrocities in Madurai has surfaced, depicting a group of youths intoxicated with ganja brutally assaulting an individual who had just finished work and then proceeding to vandalize shops.

As the Chitrai festival was being joyously celebrated in Madurai, reports of clashes resulting in injuries to around 23 people in various locations have sent shockwaves through the community. Among those affected is Khan Mohammad, a resident of Othakadai in Madurai district. According to reports, Khan Mohammad encountered a group of ganja-intoxicated youths while riding his two-wheeler home after work. An altercation ensued, leading Khan Mohammad to confront them. In response, the enraged youths launched a violent attack on him, pelting him with stones and subjecting him to a brutal assault.

The commotion attracted the attention of local residents, causing the assailants to flee the scene. The injured Khan Mohammad was promptly rescued by bystanders and transported to the government hospital for medical treatment. Additionally, the rampaging gang targeted several local businesses, including an ice cream shop, a fancy store, and a tea shop, causing significant damage to property amounting to several hundred rupees, as alleged by the affected traders. Moreover, those who intervened were reportedly subjected to verbal abuse.

In light of the victims’ complaints, a case has been registered at the Othakadai Police Station, prompting law enforcement to initiate a search for the perpetrators. The release of CCTV footage capturing the assault by the ganja-intoxicated youths further underscores the severity of the incident.

Another disturbing footage went viral on social media in Kasturba Nagar, Chennai, where two young individuals were discovered lying by the roadside. Concerned residents promptly dialed emergency services, prompting Patrol Police Ravichandran to arrive and rouse the youths with a splash of water.

Hailing from Ramanathapuram, the youths disclosed they had ventured to Chennai in search of employment. They claimed innocence regarding allegations of inebriation, citing a lack of access to alcohol from Tasmac. Suspecting they might reveal more at a hospital, Ravichandran summoned an ambulance.

Dinamalar reported that upon the ambulance’s arrival, the youths had vanished, presumably slipping away amidst the gathering crowd or possibly being escorted away by an unknown party. Such occurrences, lamented the police, have become a distressingly common phenomenon. They expressed frustration at encountering directives from higher authorities to release drug-addled individuals, despite their efforts to transport them to medical or law enforcement facilities for assistance.

In another episode on 25 April 2024, a bus conductor faced a vicious assault by an intoxicated youth in the Virudhachalam region. Vasanta Kumar, hailing from Kathathal village near Virudhachalam in Cuddalore district, was temporarily employed as a government bus driver. While carrying out his duties, he encountered an incident on the route from Virudhachalam bus station to Cuddalore. An inebriated young man disrupted traffic on the Chidambaram link road. When the bus driver, Arulraj, intervened and asked him to move aside, the youth attacked Arulraj, the conductor. Passengers intervened, subduing the youth and handing him over to the Virudhachalam police station. However, reports suggest that the police subsequently released the assailant.

Incensed by this turn of events, the bus driver informed his colleagues, leading to a protest by government bus employees in Vridthachalam, demanding the arrest of the attacker. This protest caused an hour-long disruption in traffic in the area.

Following the disruption, Virudhachalam District Collector Udayakumar and the police convened a reconciliation meeting with the bus workers. Assurances were made that the drunken youth would be apprehended. Subsequently, the government bus workers ceased their protest and resumed their duties.

If this scenario escalates unchecked, the potential of the state’s youth will be irreversibly squandered. It appears that the DMK administration is also overlooking the issue, oblivious to the grave repercussions it may bring about.

In the current DMK regime, notable figures from Kollywood who were previously vocal advocates for societal issues, such as film stars, journalists, and social activists, seem notably reticent. This silence contrasts with their previous activism. For instance, actors like Suriya, Sidharth, and Kamal Haasan, who have been vocal about issues like drug abuse through their movies, now seem conspicuously subdued. Despite earning substantial salaries, often in the millions, particularly through awareness-raising films, their public engagement appears muted.

Take, for instance, Kamal Haasan, who gifted director Lokesh Kanagaraj a Lexus ES 300h following the success of “Vikram,” a gesture valued at approximately 1 crore. While such lavish gifts are exchanged, one might question why these funds aren’t directed towards initiatives like rehabilitation centers to aid youths affected by drug abuse. It’s disconcerting to observe that despite the evident need for intervention, it appears that financial gain takes precedence over genuine social impact. This raises concerns about the true motivations behind their activism and whether it’s driven by a genuine desire for change or merely profit.

Sugarcane farmers in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Thirumandangudi in Papanasam, have been embroiled in protests and demonstrations for several months due to unpaid dues and concerns over the conversion of “defunct” sugar mills into distilleries.

Speaking to a YouTube channel, Naam Tamilar Katchi’s Kaliammal revealed several facts which pointed to DMK MPs Kanimozhi and TR Baalu. Kaliammal revealed that a sit-in protest was initiated by sugarcane farmers on 30 November 2022 and it has crossed 480+ days in March 2024. The farmers accuse the state government of not fulfilling promises made regarding the recovery of dues from Thiru Arooran Sugars Limited, which fraudulently obtained loans in the name of farmers between 2016 and 2018.

The protesting farmers are advocating for the reopening of the nearby Thiru Arooran Sugars Ltd, a sugar factory that had ceased operations due to purported losses. The livelihoods of 10,000 to 15,000 families depended on the factory, with many having invested in it. Approximately ₹202 crores, owed to the farmers, remained inaccessible. However, the factory, valued at ₹1516 crores, was acquired for a mere ₹87 crores by Kanimozhi and TR Baalu of the DMK under the pretext of repaying the factory’s loans in installments.

Instead of reopening the sugar factory, NTK’s Kaliammal alleges that Kanimozhi and TR Baalu converted it into a liquor manufacturing plant. Although officially designated as a sugar factory on paper, access for inspection has been restricted. Despite numerous petitions, no action has been taken.

Despite assurances from the state agriculture department, including the provision of no objection certificates (NOC) from banks and appealing against the National Company Law Tribunal’s decision for full payment of dues, progress has been lacking. It is noteworthy that the locality has been designated as a Protected Agricultural Zone.

Concerns have been raised over the adverse impact of setting up a distillery in the agriculturally rich Cauvery delta area, potentially jeopardizing agricultural operations and the local economy.
The situation has garnered significant attention, with large-scale rallies and demonstrations organized in solidarity with the protesting farmers.

One must also remember how DMK’s Kanimozhi waxed eloquently about the impact of liquor and TASMAC on families and that it left many a young woman widowed in Tamil Nadu. She has often promised to close down TASMAC.

She also promised that the first signature that the DMK will put when it comes to power would be to eradicate liquor and TASMAC from the state.

However, she also does double speak stating that DMK never promised to close down TASMAC completely.

Overall, the plight of sugarcane farmers in Tamil Nadu reflects broader issues surrounding agricultural practices, debt burdens, and industrial conversions in rural areas. Despite assurances and protests, concrete action from government authorities remains elusive, leaving farmers in a state of uncertainty and financial distress. As the protests persist and calls for intervention grow louder, the fate of these farmers and the future of agricultural livelihoods in the region hang in the balance.

The spouse of a DMK councillor found himself on the wrong side of the law after allegedly wreaking havoc at a government-run TASMAC shop in Tirunelveli. The incident unfolded when the man, identified as Raja, reportedly grew desperate after being denied alcohol without paying for it.

Asha, representing the 15th ward of Panagudi town panchayat in Tirunelveli district, serves as the DMK councillor. Trouble brewed when Raja visited a local TASMAC outlet a few days prior and purportedly demanded liquor to be provided without paying for it.

As TASMAC employees refused for it, the DMK councillor’s husband, allegedly resorted to vandalism within the TASMAC premises, causing damage to chairs, tables, and bottles. The entire incident was captured by the surveillance cameras installed at the site. Subsequently, TASMAC employees filed a formal complaint with the local police, prompting swift action.

Police officials registered a case against Raja and subsequently apprehended him based on the complaint. The incident has gained widespread attention after the CCTV footage went viral on various social media platforms.

Reacting to the incident, SG Suryah, the state secretary of TNBJP, took to Twitter to condemn the alleged misconduct by DMK leaders. He tweeted, “DMK Leaders riots asking for Free Liquor in a TASMAC Bar. DMK scoundrels are the most shameless creatures on earth.

There have been many instances where people associated with the DMK have indulged in hooliganism demanding free stuff from shop owners.

In January 2023, a DMK cadre and his friends destroyed a hotel in Tambaram, Chennai when they were asked money for Chicken fried rice they had.

In another incident, two DMK cadres ransacked a roadside hotel in Koyammbedu run by a BJP worker who refused to donate money to them.

In May 2022, a DMK youth wing functionary in Tiruneermalai assaulted a eatery owner for refusing to pay mamool.

A DMK cadre’s son brandished a billhook at a grocery store demanding free groceries in August 2020.

A biryani outlet in Karur was vandalized by a DMK office bearer in August 2020 after he was refused biryani as there was nothing left.

A shocking incident at a wedding in Puducherry has gained attention after a video went viral on Twitter. Guests attending the ceremony were surprised to receive liquor bottles as return gifts, deviating from the traditional practice of betel leaf packages.

The wedding of Nirmal, a bridegroom from Chennai, and Arathi from Puducherry, took place at the Mahalakshmi Wedding Hall in Puducherry on 28 May 2023. The reception included the distribution of liquor bottles alongside the customary betel leaf packages given to guests.

Typically, betel leaf packages consist of betel nuts, fruits, sweets, books, garlands, or flowers. In the absence of these items, a coconut is often used as a substitute. However, this wedding ceremony broke tradition by including liquor bottles in the betel leaf packages.

The video capturing this incident has now gone viral, prompting discussions and justifications. Some claim that since people from Chennai frequently visit Puducherry, where alcohol is readily available, liquor as part of the festivities is seen as a form of entertainment. However, friends of the bride have clarified that this was not the intention. While some netizens speculated that the couple may not have many friends or relatives attending, the act of providing liquor bottles at a public wedding ceremony has been criticized by many.

This incident has brought attention to the increased revenue generated by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), which saw a significant leap from ₹ 36,056 crores in 2021 to ₹ 44,098 crores in 2022. It is expected that TASMAC’s revenue will further increase by 25%, filling the coffers of liquor manufacturing companies linked to DMK Ministers.

Critics argue that this incident reflects the Dravidian model’s emphasis on normalizing alcohol consumption, potentially leading to social problems. The DMK government, in a white paper released shortly after assuming office, revealed that the state government’s debt burden reached ₹ 5,70,189 crore during 2021-22, translating to a debt burden of ₹ 2,63,976 per family. By the end of 2023-24, the debt burden is projected to increase to ₹ 7,26,028 crores, with each family shouldering a debt of ₹ 3.30 lakh.

With the Tamil Nadu government depending on TASMAC to alleviate the state’s debt burden, concerns are raised about the potential impact on the future and development of the state’s young population.

In yet another effort to boost sales of TASMAC, the state-owned liquor marketing and sales company, the DMK government has installed an automated liquor machine in Chennai.

Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan stated in the Tamil Nadu budget speech that he estimates TASMAC, the Tamil Nadu government’s liquor sales company, to earn ₹50,000 crores in revenue for the fiscal year 2023-24, an increase of 5000 crores from the previous fiscal year.

Accordingly, the DMK government has been bringing changes to the government rules to ensure that sales of liquor increase in Tamil Nadu through TASMAC. A few days ago, the DMK government issued an order granting a special license to allow liquor service in conference halls, convention centers, marriage halls, banquet halls, sports stadiums, and household functions.

The F.L. 12 special license would be valid for one or more days. On payment of license fees, it would be issued by the Deputy Commissioner/Assistant Commissioner (Excise) with the Collector’s approval. This permit allows guests, visitors, and participants at international or national events to possess and serve liquor.

However, after facing severe backlash, the government was forced to withdraw its order allowing liquor to be served in marriage halls. The general public and the opposition parties criticized the DMK government for trying to turn everyone in Tamil Nadu into an alcoholic.

While the controversy surrounding allowing liquor to be served in marriage halls is yet to subside, the DMK government has come up with another innovative method to increase sales of liquor in Tamil Nadu. In this regard, TASMAC has installed automated liquor vending machines at the VR Mall in Koyambedu. It is set up in such way that anyone can pay for and obtain the liquor. According to reports, the automated liquor machine was installed a week ago. It is said that the brand of liquor can be selected using a touch screen and paid for using credit or debit card.

A video demonstrating how to obtain liquor from an automated machine of TASMAC has gone viral on social media, with many criticising the DMK government for selling liquor in a public mall.

According to the Tamil Nadu state government order, the DMK government has granted a special license to allow liquor service in conference halls, convention centers, marriage halls, banquet halls, sports stadiums, and household functions.

Until now, licenses have only been issued to clubs and five-star hotels. Last month, the Home, Prohibition, and Excise Department issued a notification regarding the special license. According to the GO, “F.L.12 special license for possession of liquor and serving to the guests, visitors and participants in the international/national summits and events/conferences/celebrations/festivals, etc.”

The F.L.12 special license would be valid for one or more days. On payment of license fees, it would be issued by the Deputy Commissioner/Assistant Commissioner (Excise) with the Collector’s approval. This permit allows guests, visitors, and participants at international or national events to possess and serve liquor.

The DMK government’s GO has received criticism from all sections of the general public as well as opposition parties. BJP State President Annamalai slammed the DMK’s GO, saying, “This incompetent DMK government has brought an amendment to allow alcohol in places where people gather, including wedding halls and sports grounds. The DMK, which came to power by promising to close liquor factories and reduce the number of TASMAC shops, has been attempting to increase liquor sales by setting a target each year. We strongly condemn the DMK’s continued actions to increase sales in DMK-owned liquor factories, which will cause disorder in society, at a time when the state’s law and order are already a challenge to the public.”

Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu assembly Edappadi K Palanisamy said, “I strongly condemn the DMK government, which has kept liquor shops open for 12 hours after promising that alcohol prohibition is the only goal and has today allowed liquor to be consumed in marriage halls and sports grounds. This Dravida model government has ruined the youth’s future by making them addicted to alcohol. It is only a matter of time before the people teach this government a proper lesson for continuing to engage in such anti-people activities that disrupt public order and increase crime.”

In an RTI request filed by RTI activist Yuvraj Ramalingam, information was sought on the company name, brand, and amount spent on the procurement of liquors by TASMAC from 2016 to 2022.

Responding to the RTI filed, concerned Information Commissioner revealed that TASMAC does not keep separate official records for the names of the companies from where liquor is purchased from 2016 to 2022.

Additionally, they stated that, in accordance with Section 8(1)(d) of the Right to Information Act of 2005, the information requested comprises “business confidence” and “trade secrets”, and as a result, they are unable to provide the information requested.

They further stated that if the requested information were provided, it will be “detrimental to the competitive position of the parties involved”.

The petitioner also claimed that, despite his appeal to an appellate body, he received the same response.

This reply from Tamil Nadu government has drawn flak from public. Netizens took to question DMK’s double standards in revealing the data to public, which along with Opposition parties condemned the BJP’s decision to not reveal to public the highly classified papers of Rafael deal crucial to national security.

RTI activist Yuvaraj Ramalingam has made several expose of DMK government in the past through his RTI filing.

InAugust 2022, he had filed and RTI asking for number of liquor shops opened newly for the years between 2011 to 2022 in the Nilgiri district.

According to this RTI, the government opened 3 new TASMACs in 2021 and one new TASMAC in 2022 in Nilgiri district.
