A group of lawyers staged a protest and road blockade outside the Madras High Court on 13 October 2025, demanding justice for an advocate allegedly assaulted during an encounter involving VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi) MP Thol Thirumavalavan. The protest was organized after claims that the police have not registered a case or provided CCTV footage related to the incident, raising concerns over police inaction.

During the protest, a lawyer addressing the crowd alleged that the Tamil Nadu government “has the police in its hands,” and that lawyers across the state will continue their struggle until justice is delivered for the affected advocate, Rajiv Gandhi. The speaker also cited a prior incident at the DGP office where the police reportedly mishandled evidence, emphasizing the lack of relief for victims in such cases.

The protesters urged Tamil Nadu lawyers to boycott the upcoming Bar Council elections, questioning the role of the Bar Council as a representative forum for lawyers. They argued that lawyers face repeated attacks across courts in Tamil Nadu and India, with little protection even from institutions meant to safeguard them.

The lawyer described the alleged assault on Rajiv Gandhi, claiming he was beaten while sitting in his car and that the incident was witnessed by Thirumavalavan, who had earlier expressed anger at similar incidents involving judges. The protestors condemned the MP’s speech, alleging it incited violence and was inappropriate for someone in Parliament.

The Lawyers’ Social Justice Council expressed strong regret and condemnation over the MP’s remarks, calling for accountability. Bar Council member K. Balu also demanded that authorities take appropriate action against Thirumavalavan. The protest highlights ongoing tensions between lawyers and political figures in Tamil Nadu.

Hindu Munnani State President Kadeswara C. Subramaniam alleged that the lawyers in Tamil Nadu were being incited causing significant hardship to the public and requested the Hon’ble court to take action.

In his statement, he said, “The three major criminal laws across the country took effect on July 1. These Acts were implemented after extensive consultations with the public, legal experts, and debates in both Houses of Parliament, receiving the President’s assent. The Chief Justice of India has also endorsed these laws as a significant shift for the nation. Despite this, lawyer associations in Tamil Nadu have been protesting against the new laws since the 1st of the month. Political parties like DMK, AIADMK, and the Communist parties are supporting and instigating these protests.”

He also added, “The strike has already disrupted court proceedings for over ten days, exacerbating the backlog of cases and causing significant inconvenience to the public awaiting verdicts. The strike has now been extended for another week, with further plans for rail blockades on the 10th, supported by the ruling government. This will likely cause additional hardships for ordinary people. While the new laws have been accepted nationwide, the protests are confined to Tamil Nadu. The public hopes that the courts will intervene to resolve this situation.”

He said, “Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling that the lawyers’ strike is illegal, the protest continues. Courts have been lenient towards absent lawyers, and those who wish to work are reportedly being intimidated. Hindu Munnani appeals to Tamil Nadu lawyers not to succumb to the political parties’ influence, to accept the criminal laws, and to resume their duties. On behalf of the public, Hindu Munnani urges the Hon’ble High Court to take necessary steps to end the prolonged lawyers’ strike in Tamil Nadu.”
