The Kolathur police have apprehended a group of five individuals for allegedly orchestrating a land scam, in which they sold a property to a buyer without the knowledge or consent of the actual landowner.

According to police sources, the incident dates back to 2022, when Nandakumar (44), a resident of Periyar Nagar, was in search of a land parcel. He came across a listing on social media posted by Ramesh Kumar, who presented himself as a real estate broker. Ramesh directed Nandakumar to another agent, Murali, who was in possession of the property documents for a 1,200 sq.ft. plot located in Poompuhar Nagar, Kolathur.

Upon inspection, Nandakumar verified the documents and found that the land was registered in the name of one Dileep Kumar, who had supposedly granted power of attorney to a man named Venkatesan for the purpose of selling the property.

Negotiations ensued, and Venkatesan agreed to sell the property for ₹92 lakh, in the presence of an individual claiming to be Dileep Kumar. A sale deed was executed, and the transaction was officially registered in September 2022 at the Sembium Sub-Registrar Office, transferring the property to Nandakumar’s name.

However, just a month later, Nandakumar received a notification from the Sub-Registrar’s office stating that the registration had been revoked, as the person who posed as Dileep Kumar was found to be an impostor. The documents used in the sale were determined to be forged, prompting Nandakumar to approach the police with a complaint alleging fraud and seeking justice for the ₹92 lakh he lost.

Following an investigation, Kolathur police registered a case and arrested five suspects involved in the fraud. Those taken into custody include Venkatesan (54) from Thirunindravur, Kalilur Rahaman (50) from West Ambattur, Sayid Salahuddin (40) from Manali New Town, Abdul Razaq (73) from Erukkanchery, Abubucker (51) from Kodungaiyur, All five have been booked for their roles in the land fraud, which involved impersonation, document forgery, and cheating.

A DMK functionary who was arrested for kidnapping a businessman and was found guilty of cheating the court was accorded a grand welcome by a DMK MLA and the party’s cadres.

Earlier in October 2022, the police charged ten persons, including DMK councilor Vimala and her husband Krishnamurthy, in an incident relating to the kidnapping of a businessman at knifepoint and usurping land worth ₹25 crores.

Amar Ram, 53, of Sholinganallur, Chennai, owns a gold loan shop in the same neighborhood. In 2017, Amar Ram paid ₹60 lakh to DMK circle secretary Krishnamurthy and registered a deed to purchase 58 cents of land in Naavalur. After that, he paid a total of ₹10 crores and registered the land in his name in 2018. However, there was a dispute between Krishnamurthy and his brother Manoharan over the sold land.

Manoharan filed a case against Krishnamurthy and Amar Ram in the Chengalpattu court. On September 17, Amar Ram filed a complaint at the Chennai Marina Police Station.

In his complaint, Amar Ram said, “A lawyer named Sentamizh invited me to come near the Marina Lighthouse on the 16th of last month to talk about the land. Four unidentified individuals tied my eyes and kidnapped me in a car to Tiruporur Sub-Registrar office at knifepoint.”

He went on to say that ten people, including Krishnamurthy and his wife, 124th ward DMK councilor Vimala, attacked him and forced him to sign the cancellation certificate of the purchase agreement, and that he was only paid ₹60 lakh for land worth only ₹25 crores.

“Then, they pushed me out of the car and left. Action should be taken against 10 people including Krishnamurthy, Vimala, Senthamizh, and Manoharan,” the complaint ended.

Preliminary police investigation revealed that as the 58-cent land near AGS theatre in Navalur sold to Amar Ram now sells for more than ₹25 crores. Krishnamurthy and brother Manoharan had together decided to sell the land to the owner of a construction company. In order to modify the ‘power of attorney of the land in the name of the owner of the construction firm, Krishnamurthy abducted Amar Ram and blackmailed him into the registrar’s office.

It was also found that Amar Ram was threatened by showing a video call in which rowdies were seen around their family and threatened to kill them if he did not sign the agreement. In connection with this abduction incident, Marina police filed a case against DMK secretary Krishnamurthy, his wife-DMK councilor Vimala, Senthamizh, Manokaran, and ten others under five sections, including kidnapping and extortion of property.

However, after the Chennai city police filed the FIR, Councilor Vimala and her husband Krishnamurthy both went into hiding.

Both Vimala and her husband Krishnamurthy appeared before Egmore court to submit the Anticipatory Bail order documents, which they claimed to have got from Madras High Court.

However, Egmore Magistrate verified the anticipatory bail order submitted by DMK’s Vimala and Krishnamurthy and found that the Anticipatory Bail order from Madras High Court was fake. Following this, the Egmore police detained DMK councilor Vimala and her husband Krishnamurthy for presenting the magistrate with forged documents.

Though DMK councilor Vimala was granted bail and released in the case, her husband remained in jail because the court denied him bail. In the meantime, DMK Krishnamurthy was removed from all positions, including party membership.

He was later released on bail and was found attending DMK party events. Recently, he was seen along with DMK MLA and Chennai Southwest district secretary Mylai Tha. Velu during the birth anniversary celebration of DMK leader Anbazhagan. The accused Krishnamurthy was given a warm welcome by DMK MLA Mylai Velu, DMK division secretary Murali, and other DMK cadres.

Photos of DMK functionaries giving a grand welcome to an accused who cheated the court and was involved in the kidnapping and assault of a businessman went viral online, drawing criticism from all sections.

A case of land grab complaint by Hindu family against their Muslim neighbours has come to light in media reports. As per the report, a Hindu family in Assam’s Dhin area has accused Muslim community members of grabbing their land. This led to a clash between the two families in  Lahorighat, Morigaon, Assam.

The Chief Minister’s office is reported to have taken cognizance of the matter and there is increased police presence in the area to maintain peace. The Police Superintendent of the area is reportedly looking into the matter, but since the issue pertains to land the District Administration Circle Officer has taken up the case to resolve the dispute.

The SP has reportedly taken action to beef up security in the area to avoid any communal flare ups. The Circle Officer reportedly visited the area and is in the process of investigating the land ownership details, the officer would table his report and conclusion after a thorough study of the case with available documentary proofs.

It is noteworthy here that Assam suffers from decades of illegal occupation of land by illegal Bangladeshi Muslim migrants altering its demography and posing serious security threat in a border state. Islamist leaders like Baruddin Ajmal of AIUDF have been accused of facilitating illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims in Assam and aiding encroachment of Bangladeshi Muslims on Hindu Satras (Hindu monastry land) and Kaziranga National Park. Notably, Badruddin Ajamal is said to be an illegal Bangladeshi migrant and accused of destroying Assamese Hindu civilizational culture and tradition by overwhelming it with Islamic culture and demographic invasion.

The BJP government has been trying to recover encroached land from the illegal Bangladeshis by evictions and  razing down illegal settlements. The Sarbananda Sonawal government amended the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886 to empower the government to free temple properties and Satra lands under illegal encroachment; earlier the law only allowed the government to recover government lands under illegal occupation. Around 231 bighas and 6 kathas (76 acre) of Satra lands are reported to be encroached across the state. The BJP had promised in its election manifesto free illegal occupation of Temple properties and Satras by setting up a special task force for the same.

In June this year illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators were evicted from 120 Bighas of land (40 acre) owned by the Dhalpur Shiva Temple in Darrang district in Assam. The Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma, himself visited the Shiva Temple and urged the illegal occupiers of another 60 bighas of land there to voluntarily vacate.

Property worth over ₹100 crores belonging to the Thanjavur Corporation has been recovered from a DMK functionary by officials.

Sudarsana Sabha is located in Thanjavur, near the old bus stand, on 40,793 square feet owned by the corporation. The Sabha, which opened in 1927, was allowed to hold spiritual discourses and book launches.

Ramanathan, a former DMK councillor had taken the property on a lease for 99 years. He became the Sabha’s head in July 1991. His brothers Nagarajan, Kumaravel and Mani became the Secretary, Treasurer and General Committee member respectively. They had stopped conducting events at the Sabha and rented it out to run hotels, bars, mobile phone shops, etc. He had also not paid rent to the corporation causing severe losses to the state.

In this regard, a notice was sent to Ramanathan’s party on behalf of the corporation. Protesting against this, Ramanathan’s party filed a case in the Thanjavur court. Ramanathan and his brothers were prosecuted for misrepresenting information about Sabah members in the petition. The shops under rent were removed from the property.

On the orders of Thanjavur Corporation Commissioner Saravanakumar, officials led by Town Planning Officer Rajasekaran seized the Sudarsana Sabha building owned by the corporation from the occupiers and posted notices. Its current market value is ₹100 crore. Shopkeepers have been given one week to pick up their things.

A man attempted to commit suicide in the presence of the District Collector on the account that DMK Tenkasi MP Dhanush M Kumar has been threatening to snatch his land. Ganesh Kumar who belongs to Devadanam, works as the guard for the Devadanam Sashta Temple Reservoir Dam.

When Rajapalayam DMK MP Thangapandian, District Collector Meghanath Reddy and other government officials were returning from a government event, Ganesh Kumar stepped in front of the Collector’s car, poured Kerosene on himself and tried to set himself on fire. The Police officers on duty stopped him from setting ablaze.

Then, when Collector Meghanath Reddy enquired, Ganesh Kumar said that he has been practicing agriculture, along with his family members, on 2.5 acres of land that is owned by him. Tenkasi DMK MP Dhanush Kumar’s agricultural land is adjacent to his own. The DMK MP had encroached his land and thus there was no way to get into his agricultural land. After a point, the MP even threatened to kill him if he did not transfer the land worth 50 lakhs to the former’s name.

Subsequently, the Collector said that action would be taken against the issue and also advised Ganesh not to attempt suicide, before leaving.

Incidents of land grab that are characteristic of the DMK regime have been on the rise in Tamil Nadu within just 5 months of coming to power.

In one such incident, a DMK functionary along with his goons have grabbed the land of a poor family in Dindigul district allegedly at the instigation of I. Periyasami who is the Minister of Cooperation in MK Stalin’s government.

The family says that the land which is currently under judicial purview is their ancestral land for which they have patta.

A few days ago, the DMK functionary who is the head of the Panchayat Union arrived at the site along with his goons and started transgressing the area throwing away the fencing that was erected by the family.

“The DMK Panchayat Union leader and his men are grabbing our land saying the name of I. Periyasami. When confronted, they are trying to kill us using a crowbar. This is the atrocity they are doing. They are wrongly using the name of the Minister.”, the lady of the family says.

“These goons are doing such atrocities across Dindigul.”, the man adds.

A woman has lodged a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner’s Office seeking action against one Raja for giving her death threats at the instigation of Sholinganallur DMK MLA Aravind Ramesh in order grab the land she owns.

The complaint states that Raja, the driver of DMK legislator allegedly intimidated her with some goons and issued death threats with the intention of grabbing their land.

She also alleged that in November last year, DMK MLA Aravind Ramesh himself came with his men and threatened to take the land if they did not give it to Raja.

On 22nd August 2021, Raja had reportedly tried to attack her daughter with a machete and broke down the wall using a crowbar. This act has apparently been captured by the CCTV camera placed in the vicinity.

Though the woman had filed complaints earlier due to this continuous harassment, no action had been taken.

In this light, the woman has once again filed a complaint against Raja and his family calling for immediate action on them.

Men belonging to the DMK who had tried to sell off poromboke land meant for public use on the outskirts of Chennai were thrashed and sent running by people of the area.

Around 2000 families live in a settlement near Kallu Kuttai which lies next to Taramani, a suburb of Chennai. In 2015, a water tank was erected on a poromboke land for the use of people of the area.

After the DMK came to power in May 2021, a few men from the DMK had been frequenting the place allegedly trying to sell off the poromboke land using fake documents and demanded for the removal of the water tank meant for public use.

When they were confronted by the people a few days back, the DMK cadres identified as Ramesh Manikandan, Rajalingam and Sakthi threatened the people that they would demolish their houses with a JCB. They allegedly gave death threats and made derogatory comments on women who had opposed them saying that the DMK was now in power and that they can do whatever they want.

Irked by the behaviour of the DMK men, the public put up a united front and thrashed DMK men Ramesh Manikandan and Rajalingam and sent them running.

Along with them the DMK circle secretary Venkatesan, treasurer Kathir and advocate Ramesh Mani who were involved in selling off poromboke land to gullible poor people promising to build huts were also beaten up by the public. The police who were informed of the clash arrived at the spot to ease the situation but were of no help.

Based on the complaints of the residents, the Thoraipakkam police have registered a case and are investigating the issue.
