Kingston Group of Institutions, a CBSE school in Vellore owned by DMK MP Kathir Anand, has come under scrutiny for its cash-only fee policy. Parents are required to pay fees in cash at the school office, with no options for digital transactions. This has raised concerns over transparency, especially given the numerous corruption allegations surrounding Kathir Anand and his family.

Kathir Anand, the son of DMK Minister Duraimurugan, serves as the Chairman of Kingston Group of Institutions, while his wife, Sangeetha Kathir Anand, is the Chairwoman. Despite the DMK’s frequent advocacy for digital transactions and financial transparency, the school enforces a rigid rule that fees must be paid in person, in cash, by the 10th of each quarter. Students whose fees are unpaid are considered defaulters and are barred from attending classes until dues are cleared. Additionally, the school does not offer refunds under any circumstances.

Corruption Allegations Against Kathir Anand

The cash-only policy at Kingston School raises suspicions in light of Kathir Anand’s long history of financial controversies.

In January 2025, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided Kingston Engineering College, also owned by Kathir Anand, and seized ₹13.7 crore in cash, along with incriminating documents and hard disks. The raid, which lasted 44 hours, revealed unaccounted money allegedly intended for salaries, festival bonuses, and student fees. Further investigations led to the seizure of an additional ₹2.74 crore and the sealing of the college’s server room.

This investigation ties back to a 2019 case where over ₹10 crore in cash was confiscated from locations linked to Kathir Anand’s associates in Vellore. The money was reportedly used for cash-for-votes activities during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, ultimately leading to the cancellation of elections in the constituency.

Adding to the controversy, Kathir Anand’s father, Minister Duraimurugan, was accused of orchestrating a ₹300 crore bribe scheme in Tamil Nadu’s sand quarry business. Leaked audio recordings surfaced in 2021, allegedly exposing his involvement in illegal sand mining contracts with notorious sand baron Sekhar Reddy. Reports suggest that the deals were arranged through Kathir Anand, further cementing the family’s reputation for corruption.

Lack of Transparency In School’s Financial Dealings

With such a track record of financial misconduct, Kingston Group of Institutions’ insistence on cash payments raises serious concerns. The absence of digital payment options allows for untraceable transactions, leaving room for potential financial irregularities. It is perplexing why such a big CBSE school refuses to accept online/digital payments or even cheques when even small vendors have embraced digital transactions.

The cash-only policy at Kingston School, combined with the corruption allegations against its owner, suggests a broader pattern of financial opacity.

The Dravidianist parties in Tamil Nadu, especially the DMK and its notable allies have been protesting against the alleged imposition of Hindi under the NEP 2020 in the state. While there is no known imposition, the education policy mandates that students study 3 languages as part of their curriculum. Dravidianists faking their love for Tamil allege that such practices will erase Tamil and impose Hindi (when the mandate is that students can learn any other language, not necessarily Hindi).

However, this hypocrisy gets exposed every single day given that political party leaders in Tamil Nadu, the majority of them if not all, run schools as well.

This time it is DMK MP Kathir Anand’s turn. He is the son of DMK Minister Duraimurugan. Kathir Anand is the Chairman of Kingston Group of Institutions, Vellore and his wife Sangeetha Kathir Anand is the Chairwoman.

This school is a CBSE school located in Vellore and they proudly claim that the school offers holistic learning. Ironically, for all the drama the DMK members do about 3-language policy and NEP2020, this school offers Hindi, Tamil, and even Telugu as an option for languages to the students.

We had earlier exposed that nearly 30-40 DMK members had a CBSE school attached to them.

Kathir Anand is already on that list along with DMK allies and Dravidianist parties like the TVK.

DMK MLA Markandeyan’s Sri Ambal Vidhyalaya

Now, DMK MLA GV Markandeyan is under the spotlight. He is one of the managing trustees of a CBSE school named Sri Ambal Vidhyalaya in Vilathikulam, Thoothukudi. This is an English-medium CBSE school. It is noteworthy that GV Markandeyan is an MLA from the same constituency – Vilathikulam.

Part-Time Politician Vijay’s Vijay Vidyashram

Part-time politician Vijay was exposed a few days ago for running a CBSE school that promotes learning Hindi. Some videos of the students at the school have been circulating on social media. These are most likely from the school’s Instagram handle. In one such video is a Hindi play performed by Class 3 students. This is from a performance for Hindi Diwas.

VCK MP Thirumavalavan’s Blue Star Secondary School

Anti-NEP and Anti-Hindi VCK chief Thirumavalavan was also exposed recently by TN BJP President K Annamalai. Thirumavalavan ias associated with Blue Star Secondary School, a CBSE-affiliated school in Velachery, Chennai, which offers trilingual education.

The blatant hypocrisy of the Dravidianist parties and its allies cannot be ignored. While they vocally criticize the three-language policy and present themselves as champions of Tamil, the inconvenient truth is that they all run CBSE schools in Tamil Nadu that directly follows the very policy they claim to oppose. Their attempt to position themselves as saviours of Tamil language rights crumbles in the face of this exposed contradiction.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has confiscated ₹13.7 crore in cash, along with documents and a computer hard disk, following a raid at Kingston Engineering College in Christianpet, Vellore, which is owned by DMK MP Kathir Anand. Kathir Anand, who is serving his second term as an MP, is the son of senior DMK leader and minister Duraimurugan.

On 3 January 2025, ED officials conducted a search at Kingston Engineering College, where Kathir Anand serves as the chairman. The operation, which involved over 15 officials, lasted for 44 hours.

During the search, ED officials reportedly reviewed CCTV footage and discovered unaccounted cash, documents relating to the college’s operations and financial transactions, as well as a computer hard disk. The cash seized was believed to be reserved for staff salaries, Pongal festival bonuses, and student fees. Two days into the operation, the ED seized an additional ₹2.74 crore and hard disks, while also sealing the server room of the college.

The raids are part of an ongoing investigation stemming from a 2019 Income Tax case against Kathir Anand, linked to alleged cash-for-votes activities during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Over ₹10 crore was confiscated from locations connected to Anand’s associates in Vellore, leading to the cancellation of the election in that constituency.

On 3 January 2025, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials raided the residence of Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister and DMK General Secretary Durai Murugan in Gandhi Nagar, Katpadi. The raid is reportedly linked to an ongoing investigation into a ‘cash for votes’ case and alleged money laundering related to violations of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines and financial misconduct by bank officials during the demonetisation period.

The raid began at 7 AM, but ED officials initially faced difficulty entering the residence as no one was home. While some officers waited outside, another team conducted searches at the home of DMK leader Pooncholai Srinivasan in Pallikuppam. The ED was supported by armed personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to secure the area during the operation.

Allegations of Financial Irregularities

Durai Murugan and his son, Kathir Anand, a sitting Lok Sabha MP, reside together. In 2019, the Income Tax (IT) department raided their residence and uncovered 10 lakh in unaccounted cash. Following this, additional raids were carried out on properties linked to Murugan’s associates, including Srinivasan’s cement warehouses, where more unaccounted cash was found. A total of 11.51 crore was seized across six locations, including large amounts of new 200 notes. These operations led to broader investigations into alleged financial misconduct.

The investigation revealed possible cash transactions at a nationalized bank branch in Katpadi allegedly used to influence voters during the 2019 elections. As a result, cases were filed against Kathir Anand, Pooncholai Srinivasan, and others at the Katpadi police station.

Reason for Recent Raid?

Sources suggest that Friday’s raid is connected to the previous financial irregularities and misuse of funds during the 2019 election. While Durai Murugan was in Chennai, meeting with Chief Minister MK Stalin, DMK workers and supporters gathered outside his residence to show solidarity.

In response to the situation, a team of officers, led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, was deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any disturbances. The raid is still ongoing, and further details are expected.

In Chennai, Durai Murugan met with Chief Minister Stalin at the Secretariat to discuss the ED search. Murugan said to the media, “I don’t know who came to my house. Even the workers don’t know who arrived. I only know as much as you do about the inspection.”

Once again we see news reports on the behaviour and attitude of Kathir Anand, the DMK candidate representing I.N.D.I Alliance and vying for the Vellore constituency in the parliamentary elections 2024 violating electoral conduct rules. He took to the campaign trail on 8 April 2024, reaching out to voters in various areas including Tirupattur district, Madanur, Vadaputhupattu, Kilimurungai, Solur, Periyanguppam, Nachar Kuppam, Vinnamangalam, and Minnur.

During a recent address, Kathir Anand began by attributing blame to the current surge in gold prices, comparing it to the intense heat of the sun and highlighting how over the past decade, the price of gold has risen dramatically, making it increasingly unaffordable for many, particularly in terms of purchasing jewelry. Then he warned that if the Modi regime continues its policies, the price of gold may soon reach an exorbitant milestone of ₹1 lakh.

He lamented the plight of the common middle class, grappling with the escalating prices across the board. He drew attention to the recent farmers’ protests in Delhi, where farmers resorted to extreme measures, protesting in the nude, and blatantly lied that farmers didn’t get an audience with Modi. “If there is a problem in this town, the councilors will come running, won’t they come when called? They would come running to you whether it is something good or bad. But one lakh farmers protested in India, sat on the road and protested for almost three months, do you know what they asked? They said Mr. Modi give us an appointment, we want to come and see you, tell our grievances, please listen to our grievances and solve them, nothing else was asked. He did not give them an appointment for three months, but he is going to the same town for the wedding of an actress, he goes and attends the reception. Let me tell you one more thing, men protested naked, farmers protested against the Modi government without even a patch of cloth on their bodies. 500 men stood and protested without even a single piece of cloth on their body, they left all shame, honour and pride and to see Modi, but Modi did not even look at them and didn’t come to meet them. Women, women stood half naked, said we will let go of our shame, give us permission to see Modi, but Modi did not meet them.

Later, Kathir Anand spoke about the instances of sexual assault in Manipur. He underscored Modi’s perceived lack of concern towards these crises. During his speech, Kathir Anand attempted to evoke sympathy by discussing the issues in Manipur, aiming to sway voters’ emotions. “In Manipur, your sisters, my sisters-in-law were raped and ruined. If I was there, I would have taken my knife and cut them all. Won’t the blood have boiled, everyone’s blood would have boiled, but Modi did not look back.”

In a previous rally held in Vellore, Kathir Anand made derogatory comments about women, suggesting that their radiant appearance was solely attributed to financial assistance of ₹1,000 from the DMK government’s Women’s Basic Income scheme. hence the woman use of fairness cream and powder, thereby insulting their dignity. He also questioned if they had already received ₹1,000, possibly alluding to the state’s financial assistance scheme for homemakers. Anand’s comments have stirred controversy and received widespread criticism. Women across the state expressed feeling insulted by his derogatory remarks, stating that many hadn’t even received the promised money.

Manipulating emotions to garner votes and fostering the notion that transgressions and violence are acceptable methods for addressing concerns seems have become a common strategy in DMK’s political campaigning. However, despite the explicit guidelines outlined in the model code of conduct which emphasize restricting criticism of rival political parties to their policies, past performance, and personnel without resorting to unfounded allegations or distortion, and explicitly prohibit the exploitation of caste or communal sentiments for electoral gain, it is disheartening to observe that such comments continue to permeate election campaigns in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK appeared to have made a mistake by clinging to their old belief that simply relying on their party symbol would secure votes, even without actively engaging in fieldwork. However, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu has shifted significantly, with the electorate now favoring candidates and parties that offer tangible promises of development. This shift is evident across all constituencies and is truly remarkable to witness ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha election in 2024.

Just like the humorous analogy from a Vadivelu comedy, ‘There is a minefield everywhere you step’ the situation for the incumbent DMK MPs seeking re-election in their constituencies feels similarly precarious. Each time they approach voters for support in the upcoming elections, they are met with a barrage of probing questions regarding unfulfilled promises from their previous campaigns. This scrutiny is causing many MPs to literally scoot, realizing the challenge they face in convincing constituents amidst their unresolved commitments.

This time, it was incumbent DMK MP Kathir Anand who encountered significant criticism when he accompanied DMK Anicut MLA AP Nanda Kumar, on stage. Together, they were highlighting DMK’s accomplishments and soliciting support for re-election in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the Kandaneri village within the Vellore constituency. Suddenly, an angered resident posed tough questions to the DMK MP who was canvassing for votes.

A disgruntled constituent loudly challenged MP Kathir Anand, questioning, “Sir stop, sir stop, what promise did you make five years ago, and then where did you go?”, The MLA responded disrespectfully and in a condescending manner. Meanwhile, another observer, standing on a terrace, supported the disgruntled constituent, cautioning the MLA against using a disrespectful tone. In response, the MLA invited the observer to come down and confront the situation directly. As is customary, given the unfavorable circumstances, both the DMK MP and MLA fled the scene.

Previously during a rally in Vellore, Kathir Anand made remarks about women’s appearance, implying that their glowing faces were due to the use of fairness cream and powder.

This follows the pattern of the public openly showing their emotions over their increasing dissatisfaction with the ruling DMK. In the past week, several such incidents occurred in Chennai:

  • South Chennai DMK MP Tamizhachi Thangapandian was turned away by the residents of Mylapore over unfulfilled promises and her long absence.
  • Central Chennai DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran faced hard questions from his constituents over unfulfilled promises.
  • North Chennai DMK MP Kalanidhi Veerasamy also faced similar treatment by the public especially over his absence after the devastating floods following Cyclone Michaung.
  • DMK MLA VG Rajendran, an assembly member, who was campaigning for Congress candidate Sasikanth Senthil in Tiruvallur faced a barrage of questions and opposition from the people.
  • DMK candidate Thanga Tamil Selvan‘s campaign in Theni was interrupted by a youth to voice concerns about the lack of road facilities in his area for over two decades.
  • Karur Congress MP Jothimani also faced tough questions from constituents during her campaign in Kodankipatti Adi Dravidar residential area.
  • Minister Anitha Radhakrishnan campaigned for Congress candidate C Robert Bruce in Tirunelveli Lok Sabha Constituency, local residents in Mukkudal town questioned the minister on Mahalir Urimi and water supply shortages, prompting his hasty retreat in his car.
  • P Chidambaram, campaigning for his son Karthi Chidambaram in Sivagangai, faced discontent from women voters over issues like a TASMAC shop’s presence, they demanded accountability, warning against seeking votes without addressing concerns, while Karthi’s absence added to discontent. This made Chidambaram hastily leave the scene midway.
  • Madurantakam campaign Udhayanidhi Stalin faced criticism from women voters over shutting down TASMAC liquor stores, which challenged DMK’s commitments. He deflected responsibilities onto the former government, sidestepping direct commitments to shut down all TASMAC shops.
  • Perambalur DMK MLA Prabhakaran campaigning for Arun Nehru, son of Minister KN Nehru, faced a barrage of questions from the gathered crowd asking what he did for the people of the constituency; disheartened by the reception, abruptly ended his campaign and left the locality.

DMK MP Kathir Anand had complained to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla that intelligence officials had barged into his room in Tamil Nadu Bhavan in Delhi supposedly intimidating him. Speaker Om Birla took cognizance of the complaint and told that that this is a very serious issue and that the Delhi Police must inquire about the matter and issue a statement.

The Delhi Police examined the footage recorded on the surveillance camera at the Tamil Nadu Bhavan. In the footage it was seen that the MP’s personal assistant was being dragged and taken by some people.

During the inquiry, officials placed at the Tamil Nadu Bhavan mentioned that nobody can enter the premises without prior permission and that security officials frisk all persons entering. Not just there, the security officials are placed at all floors of the building and all persons moving from one floor to another are inspected.

Since the visitors were escorted by Kathir Anand’s aide, the Delhi Police believe the persons to be known to Kathir Anand.

The police have now submitted a report to the Lok Sabha Speaker. The intelligence have also written to the Speaker that they have nothing to do with Kathir Anand’s complaint.

It is to be noted that the 2019 General Elections for Vellore Constituency was postponed following seizure of huge amounts of cash from Kathir Anand’s office premises meant for distribution in his constituency . Investigations are underway regarding this. The Delhi Police are wondering whether Kathir Anand’s complaint is related to the incident.

On the other hand, it is said that Kathir Anand did not consult the party’s senior MPs about lodging a complaint with the Speaker.

As of now, these threads hang in air.
