Over the years, Hindus have been systematically targeted and killed in several brutal terror attacks across South Asia and beyond—often singled out purely for their religious identity. In many of these chilling incidents, terrorists confirmed their victims’ faith through identity cards, sacred threads, or even forced religious recitations before carrying out the executions. The recent massacre in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 Hindu tourists were killed, is only the latest in a long, disturbing pattern. Below are eleven such documented cases between 1998 and 2025, exposing a consistent trend of religiously motivated violence against Hindus.

#1 Pahalgam Attack (22 April 2025)

In Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, 26 Hindu tourists were killed in a brutal attack by terrorists. The attackers asked the tourists about their religious identity before separating the men from the women and children. Those unable to recite Islamic verses were shot dead.

#2 Murshidabad Violence (April 2025)

In Murshidabad, West Bengal, Muslim mobs marked Hindu homes with black ink before launching targeted attacks during riots on April 11, triggered by protests against the Waqf Amendment Act. Houses and shops, including Subha Smriti Hotel and Sri Hari Hindu Hotel, were looted and burned. Temples were vandalized, idols desecrated, and even an ambulance was torched after its driver was assaulted. Locals reported that attackers were from nearby areas. Many Hindu families fled to Malda for safety. Eyewitnesses accused the police of fleeing the scene, leaving victims to fend for themselves during the violence.

#3 Dubai Bakery Murders (11 April 2025)

In Dubai, two Indian nationals from Telangana, Ashtam Prem Sagar and Srinivas, were murdered by a Pakistani Muslim national in a bakery. The attacker allegedly targeted them based on their Hindu/Indian identity, shouting religious slogans during the attack. Ashtam Premsagar was reportedly killed following a workplace dispute with a Pakistani colleague in Dubai. According to his family and witness accounts, the attacker stabbed him multiple times despite Premsagar pleading for his life, mentioning that he had two daughters and elderly parents. His brother alleged that Premsagar was targeted “just because he was from India,” suggesting the possibility of a communal or nationalistic motive behind the attack, though no official confirmation of the motive has been provided yet by authorities.

#4 Bangladesh Regime Change Violence (5 August 2024)

A disturbing video from Bangladesh showed Islamic extremists checking the genitals of a dead man to determine if he was circumcised, then shouting “Hindu, Hindu” and laughing, indicating targeted violence against Hindus. The corpse, with a bleeding head and hands tied, was surrounded by a cheering mob. Amid ongoing anti-government protests, attacks on Hindu homes, shops, and temples intensified. Despite Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, violence continued.

#5 Rajouri Terrorist Attack (3 January 2023)

In Narla village, Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, terrorists murdered four Hindus after confirming their religious identity through their Aadhar cards. The victims were Pritam Sharma and his three sons.

#6 Shopian Terrorist Killing (6 August 2022)

In 2022, Kashmir witnessed a disturbing rise in targeted killings, with over 24 individuals killed, including seven policemen and six minorities. In Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir, two Kashmiri Pandit brothers, Sunil Kumar and Pitambarnath, were attacked and Sunil Kumar was shot dead by terrorists in their fields. Pitambarnath was injured. Both were targeted specifically for their Hindu identity.

#7 Kulgam Teacher Murder (31 May 2022)

In Gopalpura village, Kulgam, militants targeted Rajni Bala, a Hindu teacher, for her religious identity. She was shot dead while working at a government school.

#8 Three Civilians Killed In Targeted Attacks (5 October 2021)

Terrorists shot dead Makhan Lal Bindroo, owner of Srinagar’s renowned Bindroo Medicate, inside his shop. A non-local street vendor, Virender Paswan from Bihar, was also killed in Lal Bazaar. Later, Muhammad Shafi Lone, associated with a transport union in Bandipora, was shot dead in a third attack. The police launched investigations and cordoned off affected areas. These killings sparked outrage, with political leaders condemning the violence. Bindroo’s murder was particularly shocking, as he was among the few non-Muslims who stayed through the 1990s insurgency, continuing to serve the community despite ongoing threats.

#9 Srinagar School Attack (7 October 2021)

On October 7, 2021, militants killed Principal Supinder Kour and teacher Deepak Chand inside the Sangam Idgah Boys Higher Secondary School in Srinagar, days after three civilians, including chemist M.L. Bindroo, were murdered. The TRF claimed responsibility, accusing the victims of coercing students to attend an August 15 event. These killings brought the civilian death toll to 27 for the year, sparking fear among minorities and non-locals. Protests and shop closures followed. Security was heightened, and political leaders condemned the violence, warning of attempts to sow communal discord. Authorities linked the attacks to a conspiracy against growing tourism and investment in Kashmir, vowing a strong response.

#10 Kanpur ISIS Attack (24 October 2016)

In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, retired principal Ramesh Babu Shukla was killed by ISIS terrorists who confirmed his Hindu identity by his sacred thread before shooting him dead. The two ISIS terrorists, Atif Muzaffar and Faisal, were sentenced to death after the court declared it a “rarest of rare” case, and noting the killing was motivated by religious hatred to show loyalty to ISIS. The motive was to spread fear among non-Muslims. The case is linked to the 2017 Bhopal-Ujjain train blast. Investigations revealed the bullet used in Shukla’s murder was fired from a weapon recovered from slain terrorist Saifullah.

#11 Nadimarg Kashmiri Pandit Massacre (23 March 2003)

On the night of 23 March 2003, the village of Nadimarg in Pulwama —where Kashmiri Pandits and local Muslims had coexisted for generations—was shattered by unspeakable violence. Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists descended upon the village under the cover of darkness. Around 11 PM, they dragged out 24 unarmed Hindu Kashmiri Pandit men, women, and children from their homes. Forced into a line, they were mercilessly shot dead. The blood-stained mud houses, now abandoned, stand as haunting reminders of that night’s horror—a massacre that left deep scars on the land and the memory of a once-harmonious community.

#12 Udhampur Massacre (17 April 1998)

14 Pakistan-backed Islamist terrorists brutally massacred 29 Hindus, including 12 children, in Prankote village, Jammu & Kashmir. Using knives, swords, and fire, the terrorists beheaded victims and burned homes, aiming to drive Hindus out and alter the region’s demography. Isolated in the hills, Prankote’s tragedy went unreported for hours, and by the time authorities arrived, the terrorists had fled. The massacre triggered mass displacement, with survivors still living in Talwara migrant camp over two decades later—awaiting justice, recognition, and a chance to return to their ancestral homes.

Following National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah statement about the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley, members of the displaced community have demanded that the party first acknowledge the 1990 exodus and apologise for the genocide before making any promises.

Abdullah, whose party is set to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir in coalition with Congress, expressed his desire for the return of Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to flee their homes in the 1990s.

“I hope our brothers and sisters who left the Valley will return home. The time has come, and they should come back to their homes,” Abdullah told reporters on Saturday. He added that the NC does not differentiate between Hindus and Muslims and treats everyone equally. “There is a place for everyone in Kashmir,” he stressed.

However, speaking to IANS, Kashmiri Pandits, while open to the prospect of returning, voiced scepticism over Abdullah’s sincerity. One member of the community said, “If Farooq Abdullah is sincere and has had a change of heart, we welcome this step. But if he holds the same beliefs as he did in the 1980s and 1990s, this would be the biggest betrayal.”

The community also accused the NC and Congress of orchestrating the 1990 exodus. “In 1990, a deliberate policy was made to drive us out and seize our lands. The NC, in collaboration with Congress, executed this plan. If people doubt it, an investigative committee should be set up to determine who was responsible,” the Kashmiri Pandit said.

He demanded an apology from the NC, urging them to admit their role in the forced migration. “The NC should admit its role in the 1990 exodus and apologise for the genocide. If Abdullah is sincere, then proper policies and arrangements must be made for our return. We don’t have homes there anymore. Do they have a roadmap, or should we stay at Farooq Abdullah’s house?” he asked.

Another Kashmiri Pandit emphasised that sweet words won’t be enough, and concrete policies must be in place. “The NC and Congress should clarify their policies. If they still plan to implement the same policies from 1986 and 1989, we want no part of it. We won’t be fooled by sweet words. We’ve suffered enough,” he said.

Reflecting on the dark chapter of their displacement, he recounted, “On January 19, 1990, at 7:00 p.m., announcements were made from mosques, telling Kashmiri Pandits to leave, while asking Kashmiri women to stay.”

He urged Abdullah to meet with Kashmiri Pandits and develop a roadmap to ensure they are never forced to flee again.

“He must acknowledge the genocide and create a solid plan that ensures our safety,” he added. Another member living in a migration camp in Jammu urged the government to consult the Kashmiri Pandits about their demands.

“We want to know if Abdullah’s statement is genuine or just political rhetoric. The Government of India and the future J&K government should meet with a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits and ask what we want. Without that, these are just empty promises.” One community member took a direct swipe at Abdullah, questioning why he had not taken these steps earlier.

“When Farooq Abdullah first formed the government after the genocide, why didn’t he act then? Why is he speaking about this now? It seems that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has improved the situation in Kashmir, yet Abdullah continues to claim that the Prime Minister ruined it.”

Another Pandit echoed the demand to halt distress sales of migrant properties. “If Farooq Abdullah announces a stop to the distress sales of migrant properties, we will welcome that move. Why hasn’t he done that yet?” The demands come as the community remains cautious about returning to the Valley, seeking assurances and accountability from those in power.

A clip of actress Sai Pallavi, who is known for her roles in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu films, has gone viral on social media in which she has compared the Kashmiri Hindu genocide that happened in the early 1990s with stray incidents of clashes involving cattle smugglers.

In an interview to a Telugu channel, actress Sai Pallavi said “Some days ago, ‘The Kashmir Files’ movie was released. So, when The Kashmir Files was released, they showed how Kashmiri Pandits were killed during that time. How Kashmiri Pandits living in Kashmir were killed were shown. Now, let’s take, in covid time, someone was taking a cow in a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was a Muslim. Some people beat him up and shouted Jai Sri Ram. Where is the difference between the two incidents?”

In an attempt to come across as politically neutral she said ““If I was from a Leftist family or from a Rightist family, then maybe I would have favoured a side. But I was raised in a neutral family where they taught you to have to be a good human being first. The oppressed should be protected irrespective of left-wing and right-wing. I grew up in a neutral environment. I heard about this left-wing and right-wing, but we can’t say who is right and who is wrong.”

She also said that while we think of Pakistani army as terrorists, Pakistani people would think the same of Indian security forces.

“They (Naxals) thought at that time that they could only get justice by violence. It happened in the past, long back. Our perspectives may be different. Pakistani people think Indian security forces are terrorists, we think the same for their forces. It is very difficult to say whether it (the Naxal movement) is right or wrong. It depends on the situation at that time. They thought violence was the only way, as per their situation.”, she said.

Many on social media have lashed out at Sai Pallavi for trivializing the plight of Kashmiri Hindus with that of stray incidents of violence involving cattle smugglers.

Hundreds of ‘sadhus’ on Wednesday (March 16) after watching the movie ‘The Kashmir Files’, have requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allocate land in the Kashmir valley so that they can re-establish the Vedic traditions there.

BJP leader from Indore, Deepak Jain, booked two theatres and watched the film with hundreds of Hindu saints.

Mahamandaleshwar Radhe Radhe Baba who is a seer said, “Kashmir is the land of Lord Kashyap, Lord Shankaracharya’s place of worship. In Vedic times, Kashmir was known by the name of Pandits. Today all the saints, Mahamandaleshwar, Batuk, had come to watch the film.”

He added, “To destroy the Vedic traditions, heinous crimes were done and the Kashmiri pandits were ill-treated. The new generation should be aware of these facts.”

“I want to thank PM Modi for the decision to scrap Article 370. I also request the PM to allocate the land in Jammu and Kashmir to the saints so that we can establish the Vedic traditions there,” Mahamandaleshwar Radhe Radhe Baba added.

The Hindu leader also said that the state and central government should add this movie has part of the school curriculums, or special screenings for the students should be arranged.

While speaking to ANI, Deepak Jain said, “Today we got the film screened for our Mahamandaleshwar and saints so that the society can know the reality of the ill-fated act that the Kashmiri Pandits had to go through. The reality of genocide of the Kashmiri Pandits has been shown in the movie,”.

“After 2014, our nation is changing and so is the thought process of Bollywood film-makers. Various patriotic films are now being made, which were earlier not made in such good numbers or the censor board and the government would not let them released. This has changed now,” Jain said.

Already, several states have like the newly elected state government of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Tripura, Karnataka, Goa, Haryana, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, have declared the film as “tax-free”.

Most of the films that comes out of Bollywood these days are trash. Except for the extravaganza and making stereotypes of those south of the Vindhyas, they really offer nothing meaningful. But rarely a few good ones do make it through. The Kashmir Files is one such.

It has taken three decades to even muster the courage and tell about the horrific exodus of Kashmiri Hindus who were forcefully made to become refugees in their own country. The Kashmir Files is a movie centered on the real-life incidents based on interviews with victims who have lived through the horrors of the genocide.

The movie starts with a gut-wrenching scene where an Islamic terrorist feeding blood-soaked rice to a Kashmiri Hindu woman. This very first scene of the movie sets the tone for what is to come forth – raw unadulterated truth.

The plot of the movie is simple. Krishna Pandit, victim of the first generation Kashmiri Pandit Genocide, who never lived in Kashmir except for few years, firmly believes there was no genocide, and it was exodus. He and his friends are conditioned to rebel against the initiatives of the Government of India, especially Abrogation of Article 370 and Indian armed forces who are depicted as villains.

Death of Krishna’s grandfather brings him to the get-together of his grandfather’s friends who survived the Kashmiri Pandit Genocide in the valley. The story unravels from there and ends with his speech on glory of Kashmir, the epic center of knowledge to the world.

Very few movie makers have taken such bold stories to silver screen without any adulteration. Vivek Agnihotri has done it unabashedly with scenes of brutal murder of Kashmiri Hindus and strong dialogues against ecosystem hiding the truth.

Vivek Agnihotri hits two balls with one shot. He uses a ‘woke’ Kashmiri Pandit youth to narrate the horrors that the community has gone through and while doing so he gives a tight slap to all the nefarious negationist intellectual elites who deny and underplay the horrors.

It takes sheer belief in the truth for actors and technicians to involve themselves in this project. So, special kudos to the industry veterans like Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Prakash Melwadi, Puneet Issar, and Pallavi Menon who have beautifully portrayed the characters of first generation Kashmiri pandits who forcibly fled Kashmir.

There is nothing else for someone like me to review on the ‘craft’ or other aspects. But if you’re wondering whether to watch the movie or not, then let me conclude by saying this.

Every Indian must watch this movie and feel remorse for not speaking about this for so long.

Kashmiri Islamic terrorists supported by Pakistan today (October 7) killed two two civilians, Sangam School principal Satinder Kaur and teacher Deepak Chand in Jammu and Kashmir.

This adds to five minorities being murdered in cold blood in the last five days and the latest victims, both school teachers were shot at point-blank range by the terrorists and both were declared brought dead when they were taken to the hospital.

Earlier terrorists killed the owner of Bindroo Medicate Makhan Lal Bindroo near Iqbal Park in Srinagar on Tuesday. Bindroo was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. And on the same day, terrorists killed Virender Paswan, a street hawker who hailed from Bihar, near Madina Chowk in Srinagar’s Lalbazar.

As per reports, the Islamic State which has emerged as the new player has claimed responsibility for the attack on the street vendor in Srinagar.

In show of solidarity, after the brutal killing of ML Bindroo, owner of Bindroo Medicate, a road in Srinagar is being named after him and this decision was taken by Srinagar Muncipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor Juanid Mattoo who said, “The road from Haft Chinar Chowk to Jehangir Chowk (where Bindroo Medicate is located) will be named Shaheed Makhan Lal Bindroo Road as a tribute to his contributions to society. A resolution to this effect will be formally proposed in the SMC General Council,”.
