Senior BJP leader and convener of the Co-ordination Committee, H Raja has accused the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department of violating both temple agamas and a court undertaking by proceeding with unauthorized construction work at the historic Arulmigu Sri Devarajaswamy Temple in Kanchipuram.

In a statement, Raja said the HR&CE Department, represented by the temple’s Executive Trustee, has begun constructing a ramp from the Kachi Vaithan Prakaram to the outer prakaram of the temple, cutting across sacred prakarams. He alleged that the work involves altering the traditional vasal (entrance) of the temple and using windows surrounded by Vijayanagara-period murals to pave the ramp’s route, thereby damaging heritage flooring and structures of archaeological significance.

Raja claimed that the construction not only violates the agamas governing temple architecture but also breaches an undertaking given by the HR&CE Department before the Madras High Court in W.P. No. 22177 of 2025. The department had assured the court that no harm would be caused to any heritage structure, sannadhi, deity, or mural during renovation or accessibility works.

Calling the ongoing ramp construction “unnecessary” and “a clear act of contempt,” Raja urged authorities to halt the project immediately and preserve the temple’s sanctity and historical value.

Heritage conservationists and temple devotees have expressed similar concerns online, urging the authorities to immediately halt the work until the High Court’s conditions are fully complied with.

The HR&CE Department has not yet issued a public response to the allegations.

This news comes amid allegations that the iconic gold and silver lizard (palli) idols have gone missing during renovation work at the Varadharaja Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram.

The Hindu Munnani has urged district authorities to take immediate action following an alleged attack on Hindu residents in Sheikh Karim Nagar, Nazarethpet, Kanchipuram district.

According to a statement from the Hindu Munnani, more than 300 Hindus from 63 families have been living in the area for over four decades. The organization said the residents have been paying regular rent for the land, which it claimed belongs to a local mosque.

The group alleged that four individuals, identified as Akhtar Pasha, Feroz Pasha, their mother Zeenat Begum, and Yusuf Khan who reportedly have no connection with the mosque, claimed ownership of the property and launched an attack on a resident named Saravanan and a 70-year-old man. The statement also alleged that women in the area were verbally abused during the incident.

Hindu Munnani said that despite complaints lodged at the police station, no action had been taken against the accused. Following this, the organization’s Kanchipuram Division Secretary R.D. Mani, District Advocate Front President Dasarathan, and General Secretary Sathyanarayana visited the area, met with the affected residents, and accompanied them to the police station to press for action.

Hindu Munnani further stated that Saravanan, who was injured in the attack, was admitted to a hospital, where members of the Hindu Munnani met and consoled his family.

Warning that inaction from the district administration and revenue department could lead to heightened tension in the locality, the Hindu Munnani urged officials to take prompt measures to prevent any further escalation.

Dravidian sympathiser and archaeologist K. Amarnath Ramakrishna has once again drawn severe criticism from Tamil scholars and historians after attempting to rewrite well-established history of ‘Kanchipuram’. In his latest controversial claim, Ramakrishna asserted that Kanchipuram, a city revered in Sangam literature and celebrated in ancient Tamil poetry was not a Sangam-era city. Instead, he labeled it a later Vedic and Buddhist settlement, pushing yet another narrative to please the Dravidian ideological ecosystem.

His comments were made during a lecture titled “Excavated and Unexcavated” at the centenary symposium on the Indus Valley Civilization, organized by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association a group notorious for pushing Dravidianist interpretations of history and the same outfit that hosted a conference with Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin under the provocative banner, Eradicate Sanatana Dharma.”

Ramakrishna cited the University of Madras’ excavations at Kanchipuram (1975–1982), claiming that their full report was never published. Referring to Professor Gurumoorthy’s study, he pointed out the absence of Black and Red Ware pottery at the site, a common archaeological marker of Sangam-era settlements. According to Ramakrishna, this absence proves Kanchipuram was not a Sangam city, but a later development celebrated by “Vedic people” as Ghatikasthanam, or a center for Vedic learning. He further claimed that excavations near the Kamakshi Amman Temple uncovered a Buddhist stupa conveniently framing the city as primarily Buddhist, thus aligning with the Dravidianist disdain for Hindu heritage.

Speaking at the conference Amarnath Ramakrishna said, “If you look at the place called Kanchipuram, the University of Madras continuously excavated the site for almost seven years, from 1975 to 1982. But does anyone know what information about Kanchipuram was revealed? Does anyone know what they excavated? Only a handful of information, maybe a para, has emerged, but the full report has not yet been released. The complete excavation report for Kanchipuram has not been published by the University of Madras. No one has ever asked for it. Professor Gurumoorthy, who was part of that excavation team, wrote a book called Ceramic Traditions of South India. In that book, he specifically notes that while Black and Red Ware pottery sherds are found in many parts of India, from the Indus Valley Civilization onwards, and are prevalent in Tamil Nadu, they were not found in Kanchipuram. This is a crucial piece of information.

This significant finding suggests that Kanchipuram is not a city from the Sangam period but a later development. This is why Vedic people celebrate it, because Kanchipuram is referred to as Ghatikasthanam. Ghatikasthanam means a place where a school for Vedic traditions was established. The excavations also suggest that the city of Kanchipuram was built at a later time. If you consider the old Chengalpattu district around Kanchipuram, wherever excavations have been carried out, evidence of Black and Red Ware pottery sherds and megalithic burials are found. However, the Kanchipuram excavations revealed that not a single piece of Black and Red Ware pottery was found. This is a note made by Professor Gurumoorthy. Our history is incomplete because such important information remains unreleased. Similarly, Kanchipuram is also a Buddhist city. The trench for the excavation was dug near the Kamakshi Amman Temple. At that site, a Buddhist stupa was unearthed, indicating that a Buddhist stupa existed in Tamil Nadu and the temple was built on top of it. The excavation report has not properly released information about the site of the Buddhist stupa. Because the report has not been published, this information has not been widely disseminated.”

This narrative, however, has been roundly rejected by credible Tamil historians and scholars who accuse Ramakrishna of bending facts to fit ideological agendas. Critics argue that his theory not only ignores substantial literary evidence but also misrepresents the very nature of the Sangam period which was deeply intertwined with Vedic culture.

Take, for instance, the Sangam classic Perumpāṇāṟṟuppaṭai, which explicitly mentions Kanchipuram and its ruler Thondaiman Ilanthiraiyan, “Onnath Tholvar Ulayvidathu Aarthu Kachiyona Kaivan Thondral,” (ஒன்னாத் தெவ்வர் உலைவிடத்து ஆர்த்துக் கச்சியோனே கைவண் தோன்றல்) which translates to, “He who ruled from Kanchipuram roared in triumph when enemies dared defy him.”

The poem goes on to explain how the city got its name from the abundance of Kanchi trees and refers to it as a moodhoor  an ancient, prosperous city known for its festivals and cultural richness. These references make it indisputably clear that Kanchipuram was already a flourishing urban center during the Sangam era long before any Buddhist influence.

Even more telling is the poem that describes Karikala Chola, one of the most iconic kings of the Sangam age, halting at Kanchipuram’s Kamakshi temple to offer worship on his expedition to the Himalayas, “Kachi Valaikachi kaamakotangaval mechiyinithirikum meichathan kaichendu kamba kalitraan karikaalperuvalathaan sempon girithiritha sendu” (கச்சி வளைக்கைச்சி காமகோட்டங்காவல் மெச்சியினிதிருக்கும் மெய்ச்சாத்தன் கைச்செண்டு கம்ப களிற்றான் கரிகாற்பெருவளத்தான் செம்பொன் கிரிதிரித்த செண்டு) which translates to, “In Kanchi, at Kamakottam where Kamakshi adorned with bangles dwells, Karikala Chola worshipped her. With the sacred staff of Sastha in hand, he struck the golden peaks of the Himalayas.”

This verse alone shatters Ramakrishna’s attempt to write Kamakshi and Kanchipuram out of the Sangam-era spiritual landscape. It confirms both the temple’s existence and the continuity of goddess worship in the region, directly contradicting the idea that the site was primarily Buddhist.

Additionally, Perumpanatrupadai also praises the Thiruvehka Vishnu Temple, calling it the resting place of Mahavishnu on Adisesha further evidence that Kanchipuram was a vibrant hub of Vedic and Sanatana culture long before the period Ramakrishna suggests, “Kaandhal am silambil kaliru padinthaangu paambanai pali amarnthen aangan,” (காந்தள் அம் சிலம்பில் களிறு படிந்தாங்கு, பாம்பணைப் பள்ளி அமர்ந்தோன் ஆங்கண்) which translates to, “Just as an elephant rests peacefully in the mountain, the one who reclines on the serpent bed (Vishnu) rests there.”

Ramakrishna’s selective quoting, suppression of literary sources, and reliance on unpublished or partial excavation data has led many to accuse him of being less of a scholar and more of a mouthpiece for political propaganda. His eagerness to label everything “non-Vedic” or “Buddhist” while dismissing Tamil Hindu heritage reflects a broader agenda one that seeks to erase or reframe history to fit a Dravidianist narrative.

In trying to paint Kanchipuram as a non-Sangam, non-Hindu city, Ramakrishna isn’t just wrong he’s actively undermining centuries of Tamil history, literature, and identity. And all for what? To gain applause from a political ecosystem that thrives on historical distortion and selective memory.

Hindu Munnani successfully halted the opening of an illegal church in Kattiampandal village, located in Uthiramerur taluka of Kancheepuram district, due to lack of proper documentation and prior approval from district authorities.

The church, being constructed on government-owned public land in Kattiampandal village, was nearing completion, and preparations were underway for its opening ceremony, despite the absence of permission from the District Collector.

Concerned locals approached Hindu Munnani for assistance. In response, officials from the organization, led by Kanchi Divisional Secretary R.D. Mani, visited the site and surrounded the church. They lodged a formal complaint with the Uthiramerur Tehsildar, who then issued an order citing potential law and order issues. The Tehsildar’s order denied permission to open the church, as it was being constructed on government land without official consent.

As preparations for the church’s opening continued, Hindu Munnani and local residents announced their intent to block the road in support of the Tehsildar’s order. In response, the Village Administrative Officer assured that action would be taken, and the public gathered around the illegal church site.

In a troubling development in Tamil Nadu, residents of Min Nagar in Kanchipuram district are expressing their frustration over a recent claim by the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board regarding 2.43 acres of land where Hindus have been living for over 40 years. The Kanchipuram Registrar’s Office has stated that the land belongs to the Waqf Board, leading to difficulties for the residents in registering their properties.

The land in question was originally purchased in 1982 by employees of the Kanchipuram Electric City Office, who acquired 6.13 acres in Konerikuppam, near the Kanchipuram Corporation. Over time, these residents built homes and settled there.

The issue specifically revolves around Survey No. 82, one of four survey numbers (82, 83/2, 85, and 89/2), where the residents are now facing obstacles in registering their deeds for the 2.43 acres. Shanthibai, one of the residents, attempted to sell her house at the Kanchipuram Registrar’s Office in October 2024 but was told that the Waqf Board claimed ownership of over 40 residential plots in Survey No. 82. The Registrar’s office informed her that she would need to obtain a no-objection certificate from the Waqf Board before proceeding with the sale.

Similarly, D. Munseeb from Min Nagar, who wanted to divide his property between his children, was also denied registration due to the land being labeled as Waqf Board property.

Srinivasan, the secretary of the Min Nagar Welfare Association, explained that the 2.43-acre plot in Survey No. 82 had originally been owned by Kanniyappan in 1944. The property was later auctioned by the Revenue Department to Vitobhasha, from whom the residents, mostly Hindus, purchased it as residential plots in 1982. The Revenue Department issued them pattas, and they have been paying property taxes ever since. Srinivasan emphasized that the Waqf Board’s objection is without documentation, and the Land Registry Department has previously confirmed that there were no encroachments on the land between 1967 and 1981.

He further called on the Waqf Board to provide any relevant documents to support its claim to the land. He also mentioned that more than 40 families are affected by this issue and that the residents have lodged complaints with the Collector, the District Registrar, and the Chief Minister’s Special Division, urging the government to intervene and resolve the matter.

A.T. Kandasamy, another resident of Min Nagar, shared his distress, recounting how he was informed by the Sub-Registrar’s office that his land could not be sold because it was allegedly owned by the Waqf Board. He expressed disbelief, asking how land where Hindus have lived for years could belong to the Waqf Board. Kandasamy, who had hoped to sell his house to cover wedding expenses, called the situation a source of great distress, as he is unable to sell the property due to the claim. He appealed to the government to take action and clarify the ownership of the land.

A pastor was arrested by the all women’s police station for alleged sexual misconduct involving a 14-year-old girl in Kanchipuram, under the POCSO Act.

Pastor Devairakkam, aged 54, affiliated with CSI Christ Church on Kanchipuram Railway Road, allegedly subjected the girl to unwanted advances. The minor girl was enrolled at CSI Church High School. Following her mother’s passing from health complications, the adolescent resided within the church grounds. On the 1st of January this year, the clergyman, Devairakkam, subjected the girl to sexual harassment. The girl fled from him and disclosed the incident to her community members. Allegedly, law enforcement authorities did not take immediate action upon receiving the complaint.

Consequently, the locals sought intervention from a section of the chief minister’s office. The plea was forwarded to the Kanchipuram District Child Protection Office. Following an investigation by District Child Protection Officer Sakthi Kavya, a formal report was lodged at the women’s police department in Kanchipuram. Subsequent to a thorough inquiry, the police have charged the priest under the POCSO Act and have taken him into custody today.

Kanchipuram District Collector Kalaichelvi Mohan has announced that the DMK government will soon disburse financial aid for the repair and renovation of churches. This initiative, which began in the fiscal year 2016-17, now includes increased funding based on the age of the church buildings.

According to an official release, funding will cover the installation of stands for reading the gospel, sound systems, altars, sacred vessels, benches for devotees, and compound walls. The financial aid has been significantly increased:
– Churches aged 10-15 years will now receive ₹10 lakh instead of the previous ₹2 lakh
– Churches aged 15-20 years will get ₹15 lakh, up from ₹4 lakh
– Churches over 20 years old will receive ₹20 lakh, an increase from the earlier ₹6 lakh

A committee led by the Collector will review applications, conduct site inspections, and assess the needs before recommending eligible churches for funding. The financial aid will be disbursed in two installments via electronic transfer to the church’s bank account, according to an official release.

It is noteworthy that HR&CE department in Tamil Nadu has been routinely taking temple money and using it for purposes that are not related to the temple or rituals connected to the temple. Also, neither do churches and mosques come under the purview of any Religious and Charitable Endowments department under the state government. Critics question how and why a state government must fund the repair of churches when it does not partake in the money from these institutions.

Additionally, the work done in the name of repairs in Tamil Nadu have been seen as a farce. In 2023, a portion of the eastern entry tower at Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple collapsed. This occurred during an ongoing effort to mend the first and second-level compound walls of the temple entrance exposing the quality of “repair work” allegedly done by the HR & CE department. In addition to this, temple premises are being used as parking lots for officials to park their vehicles.

As the 2024 parliamentary elections approach their climax with only 12 days remaining, a live event named “Makkal Sabhai” was organized by News 18 Tamil Nadu channel on 6 April 2024, at Uma Murugan Mahal in Kanchipuram. The panel comprised representatives from different political parties, including current MLAs, who presented their perspectives and criticisms of the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, as well as the opposition. The platform served as an opportunity for each party to promote its ideology and critique others’ stances.

The panel consisted of Kanchipuram MLA Ezhilarasan representing the DMK, Dr. SG Suryah from the BJP, Balabharathi from the CPM, Kalayansundaram from the AIADMK, Badsha from the TMK, and Kazhanjiyam from the NTK. The host for the event was Correspondent Balavel Chakravarthi.

When Kanchipuram DMK MLA Ezhilarasan took the floor, he expressed confidence in the widespread trust placed in the I.N.D.I alliance by the populace, asserting its forthcoming victory across India. He emphasized that although the alliance originated in Tamil Nadu, it was named the I.N.D.I.A alliance to symbolize its commitment to social justice nationwide. He accused the BJP of apprehension towards the formidable coalition of various parties, citing the recent arrests of alliance party leaders.

Addressing the issue of electoral bonds, he condemned it as a major scam introduction by the BJP, recently unveiled by the Supreme Court. He criticized the purported utilization of central agencies in coercing political funding through the purchase of electoral bonds during raids on companies, incorrectly stating that the BJP received 8256 crores through this scheme. He suggested a nexus between electoral bonds and political funding, pointing out instances where companies procured bonds during government tenders and income tax raids, claimed as scam. Furthermore, he leveled allegations with the CAG report concerning the Dwarka expressway project and Ayushman Bharat scheme, implicating the BJP in these matters. He referenced pre-poll data indicating BJP’s projected seat count below 180, interpreting it as a reflection of public sentiment.

Later, when SG Suryah, the Tamil Nadu BJP State Secretary, was brought the floor, he derided Kanchipuram DMK MLA Ezhilarasan, suggesting that there had been no mention of BJP’s seat count falling below 180. He insinuated that it was a ploy, emphasizing that no specific statistical references were made. Suryah cited pre-poll predictions from various media outlets, including India TV and CNN, indicating that BJP was projected to secure no less than 300 seats, while Congress was unlikely to exceed 50 seats. He questioned whether this confidence stemmed from wishful thinking or a misguided belief in replicating the 2019 election results.

Responding to Ezhilarasan’s criticism of the electoral bonds scheme, Suryah pointed out BJP’s substantial funding as the ruling party in 18 states, contrasting it with DMK and questioned the legitimacy of DMK’s receipt of funds. Suryah dismissed allegations of scam related to electoral bonds.

Turning to the issue of infrastructure, Suryah compared DMK’s expenditure on a bridge construction project from Teynampet to Saidapet, citing its exorbitant cost of 691 crores for a 3.2-kilometer stretch, to the proposed cost of constructing Dwarka Expressway with 16 lanes at a mere 18 crores.

Suryah then criticized DMK MPs like A Raja and Thirumavalavan for their past derogatory remarks about Hinduism, contrasting it with their current attempts to embrace Hinduism for political gain. He highlighted Thirumavalavan’s prior advocacy for dismantling Hindu idols and dismissing the relevance of Hinduism to society, juxtaposing it with their current efforts to visit temples for electoral appeal and A Raja who likened Hinduism to dengue and malaria now says his wife is a devotee of lord Ram

The discussion took a unexpected turn when Suryah involved the host, who initially questioned whether the battleground had shifted to BJP versus DMK to the DMK MLA. Suryah countered DMK’s dismissal of BJP as a state party, pointing out the continuous references made by DMK leaders throughout the day, questioning their consistency in disregarding BJP’s significance in the state.

Suryah then took aim at corruption allegations against the BJP by criticizing the DMK. He pointed out that the current ministers facing jail time are from the DMK, namely Senthil Balaji and Ponmudi. He highlighted the irony of Senthil Balaji’s case, initiated by the DMK itself. Suryah emphasized that figures like Kanimozhi and A Raja were imprisoned during the Congress regime, not the BJP’s tenure, yet the BJP is unfairly labeled as the enemy while the Congress is seen as an ally.

Furthermore, Suryah mocked the DMK’s leaders for their disparaging remarks after implementing financial schemes. He cited instances where Kathir Anand suggested that individuals only used beauty products like Fair and Lovely after receiving money from government initiatives. He also referenced Durai Murugan’s statement implying that parents’ sole responsibility is reproduction, as the government takes care of students’ education and meals. Suryah highlighted the DMK’s unfulfilled promises as another point of contention.

The intense debate quickly ignited the audience, particularly between the BJP and the DMK. Tensions escalated when DMK supporters became angered by the rebuttal from BJP State Secretary SG Suryah, leading to a physical altercation among attendees. A disturbing video footage captured chairs being thrown amidst the clash.

Responding to the incident, BJP State Secretary SG Suryah issued an official statement via X handle, condemning the actions of the DMK stated, DMK is powerless to counter ideas with ideas. DMK thugs assaulted BJP members during the News18TamilNadu’s “Makkal Sabhai” event in Kanchipuram today.  Incivility in front of DMK MLA Mr. Ezhilarasan by throwing chairs and using third class words.”

In a viral video making rounds on social media, ASP Udhayakumar, is being hailed as the real Singham cop from Kanchipuram, garnering applause from both locals and netizens. He was tasked with the duty of removing illegal flagpoles in the Sunguvarchathram bazaar area of Kancheepuram District by the Madras High Court. While carrying out his responsibilities, Sriperumbudur union committee leader Karunanidhi from DMK objected, arguing that flagpoles on the national highway should be targeted instead removing here.

ASP Udhayakumar said “State highways, National Highways all are same sir, what can we do? If you come to me what shall I do, go and file in-juncture in court, you are saying this casually. On Monday, the court will file contempt only on me.

Sriperumbudur union committee leader Karunanidhi neglectfully replied, “Don’t we know the order?

Despite patient explanations from the revenue department and the police showing the court’s order deeming these flagpoles illegal, Karunanidhi remained adamant. In response, ASP Udhayakumar firmly asserted, “I’m doing my job, don’t stop me, sue me if I’m wrong,” He then proceeded to order the removal of the DMK and other flags.

Netizens Praise Cop

Netizens were all praise for the cop who was doing his duty and confronting a member from the ruling party. He also ensured the structure constructed was demolished to ensure fairness.

What Was The Court Order About?

In a petition lodged by Chennai-based attorney Ramalingam with the Madras High Court, that various political parties have unlawfully placed their flags along national highways in Tamil Nadu. This action is purported to pose a threat to public safety, particularly impacting the flow of traffic, including school vehicles and ambulances. Moreover, it is alleged that these political entities have encroached upon land designated for the National Highway, utilizing it as a platform for their political activities.

Through the invocation of the Right to Information Act (RTI), Ramalingam sought information regarding these unlawful flagpoles. In response, the National Highways Authority revealed the presence of 40 such illegal flagpoles across three areas: Chennai-Tada, Koyambedu-Maduravoyal, as well as 34 in Kanchipuram district and 14 in Ranipettai district. Subsequently, the petition calling for the removal of these illegal flagpoles was brought before the bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Gangapurwala and Justice Bharatha Chakraborty on 5 March 2024.

During the proceedings, NHAI expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of cooperation from the Tamil Nadu government and the police department in removing these unlawfully erected flagpoles. Consequently, the judges, taking suo moto cognizance of the matter, summoned the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu as a respondent. They demanded an explanation for the non-cooperation and adjourned the hearing to March 11. Additionally, the judges emphasized that the High Court had previously issued orders for the removal of such flagpoles, warning that failure to comply constituted contempt of court.

On 11 March 2024, the first bench of the Madras High Court, consisting of Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy, directed the state police to promptly take action to dismantle unauthorized flagpoles installed by political parties along national highways.

The bench firmly asserted that the installation of illegal flagpoles cannot be tolerated, stressing the necessity for law enforcement agencies to take decisive action against offending political parties. It instructed the state police to swiftly intervene to remove such unauthorized flagpoles. The court also noted the efforts made by NHAI in removing 89 flagpoles from 45 locations, with an additional 40 yet to be dismantled. Furthermore, the court took the initiative to involve the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the case, aiming to explore a lasting solution to the issue.

Christian missionaries belonging to the Apostolic Christitian Church who were indulging in proselytization near a temple at a village in Kanchipuram were driven away by residents and members of the Hindu Munnani.

Over 50 individuals associated with the Apostolic Christian Church in the Purisai region of Kanchipuram District were observed going from house to house, distributing pamphlets, and actively involved in conversion activities. Members of the Hindu Munani, along with local residents, collectively thwarted the group of individuals who were attempting to convert the village.

In a video shared on social media by Hindu Munnani, the resident capturing the footage exclaimed loudly. “Sir, sir please do not do this in front of our temple. Do not do this in front of our temple. Do not do this in front of our temple! This is a temple! Doesn’t this look like a temple to you? Should we come to your church and Ayyo Amma Andavare!?”

One of the missionary man can be heard saying “Call Emmanuel” to which the resident replies “call him

Without hesitation, the missionary man swiftly pulled out his phone to capture the incident and chuckled “How many people like you have we seen before this? to which the villagers reply “Yes this is your duty”

The missionary man further says “go and correct murderer and robbers”

An angry resident goes on to shout saying “You correct them. Who has asked you to come here? What you are doing here is wrong!”

This occurrence is not unfamiliar in Tamil Nadu. In the past, there have been numerous incidents similar to this one, where Hindu Munnani along with local residents took it upon themselves to expel missionaries involved in conversion activities.

In October 2023, Saravanan Joseph, the head of the Christian Munnani, sparked a controversy by proposing a change in the name of Chennimalai, a revered Hindu site dedicated to Lord Murugan, to ‘Yesumalai’. A massive protest by Hindu Munnani, BJP and other Hindu outfits led to his arrest.

In March 2022,  there were allegations that Christian missionaries were involved in forcible conversion by setting up a prayer hall in front of a private school in Velampatti of Krishnagiri district, which was later resisted by locals and Hindu Munnani.

A Christian woman was accused of proselytization and converting people, in the Gudalur area of Theni which was thwarted by Hindu Munnani members.

An attempt to open a Christian prayer hall, ‘Grace Assembly Hall’ in front of Sakthi Kaliyamman temple in Seelanaickenpatti, Salem, was successfully stopped by the Hindu Munnani in December 2021.

Hindu Munnani plunged into action when construction of an illegal Christian prayer hall near the Sugreeswarar temple in Tirupur district came to light.

In October 2021, members belonging to the Hindu Munnani successfully stopped proselytization attempts by Christian missionaries at a village in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu.

In the district of Kanchipuram in May 2023, the Hindu Munnani successfully intervened in a reported Love Jihad incident near Uthiramerur. The individual at the center of the incident was Selvi, an 18-year-old who had recently completed her schooling. She had been enticed by a Muslim man named Imran and had been pressuring her to convert and marry him. Under the name Asma Fathima, her Muslim marriage (nikkah) was scheduled for June 1, 2023. The victim herself provided a written statement, revealing that Imran had used persuasive tactics and coercion to compel her into the marriage and disclosed that her name was changed to Asma Fathima without her family’s consent.
