A disturbing video from a government primary school in Kallakurichi has gone viral, showing young students emotionally pleading with the state’s education minister for clean and safe mid-day meals. The footage, which features children complaining about food contaminated with worms and insects, has triggered public outrage and intensified criticism against the ruling DMK government—particularly because such incidents have become increasingly common across Tamil Nadu.

The complaint stems from students at the government primary school in Old Uchimedu village, Kallakurichi district. According to reports, the mid-day meal served was prepared using rice that had been stored unused for over a month during the summer break. As a result, the food was spoiled, filled with worms, and emitted a strong foul odor.

In the viral video, a visibly distressed child holds up her insect-infested meal and says, “There are always worms and bugs in the food. We’ve told them and our parents also came and pointed it out. Even then these are worms and bugs are present. We really don’t like to eat this. There are bugs in our food—we keep taking them out, but they keep coming back. That’s why we’re asking you to give us different food.

Following public backlash, Kallakurichi MLA Senthilkumar visited the school for inspection. The school’s principal acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and emphasized the need for strict quality checks on meals, including daily inspection of eggs to ensure they are fresh. He assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the matter.

A recently circulated video depicting a lavish non-vegetarian feast accompanied by alcohol, following a DMK meeting in Tirukovilur, has sparked widespread online debate. The footage, showcasing attendees dining with beer bottles on their tables, has drawn sharp criticism from netizens, who have sarcastically juxtaposed it with Chief Minister MK Stalin’s anti-drug campaign messages.

The event in question was a DMK Youth Wing meeting involving members from the Tirukovilur West, East, and North Union Polling Stations under the Rishivanthiyam Assembly Constituency in Kallakurichi South District. Held at a private venue, the session featured addresses by MLA Vasantham Karthikeyan and Rishivanthiyam Assembly Constituency In-charge Perunarkilli, who briefed the youth wing executives on election strategies and their roles at the polling stations.

Following the meeting, a non-vegetarian feast with alcohol was organized for over 300 attendees, including polling station youth wing organizers, facilitated by three union secretaries. Images from the event, showing individuals posing with beer bottles on dining tables, have gone viral on social media, prompting discussions about the DMK’s stance on alcohol prohibition.

This incident has intensified scrutiny of the Chief Minister, who previously expressed concern over public behavior that could tarnish the party’s image. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of actions that bring honor to the party and cautioned against conduct that could lead to ridicule. The recent event involving DMK youth has added to the challenges faced by the Chief Minister in maintaining the party’s public image.

Opposition members have also raised questions, highlighting contradictions in the DMK’s policies. They point to instances where party leaders, such as Thoothukudi MP and Deputy Leader of the DMK Kanimozhi, have advocated for the closure of liquor shops and criticized alcohol consumption, yet events like the one in Tirukovilur seem to contradict these positions.

Similarly, on October 2024, Chief Minister MK Stalin launched a renewed anti-drug campaign, appealing to the youth and student community to avoid addiction. He urged them not to harm their bodies with substances known to be detrimental, emphasizing the government’s commitment to eradicating drugs and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, in a video message appealed, “To the youth and student community of Tamil Nadu, as a father and a member of your family, I appeal and beg to you all not to take the path of addiction. Why spoil the body that you have nurtured with care? Why buy something knowing it is harmful? Why seek harm for yourself? No one in the future youth community should fall into the habit of drugs. This is my greatest concern.”

A month-old incident has recently gone viral, showing a video of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) women’s district secretary allegedly leading an attack on a doctor’s family with the help of a group of individuals near Kallakurichi. The footage has sparked widespread attention and controversy.

Palaniyammal, a resident of Kalaignar Nagar in Thiyagadurgam, Kallakurichi district, serves as the VCK Kallakurichi North District Secretary. She is said to have planted and maintained saplings on a piece of land measuring approximately 10 cents in front of her residence. However, Saravanan, a doctor and the son of Kanagaraj, reportedly objected to this, claiming that the land was officially registered in his family’s name. Allegedly, he cut down the trees, stating that others had no right to plant and grow saplings on their property.

Enraged by this, Palaniyammal asserted that she had not planted saplings on anyone’s private land. It is alleged that she then called in her associates and, claiming that she was cultivating plants on government-owned Kallanguthu Poramboke land, threatened Saravanan’s life. The group reportedly vandalized the doctor’s house, breaking gates and windows with stones and sticks.

Further escalating the situation, Palaniyammal allegedly attacked Saravanan’s family, using both physical force and stones. She is also accused of seizing Saravanan’s phone after he recorded the altercation. Additionally, her husband, Velmurugan, allegedly assaulted a person who attempted to retrieve the phone.

The Thiagadurgam police station has launched an investigation following complaints from both parties. Though the incident occurred over a month ago, the emergence of the viral video has now drawn widespread attention, intensifying public reaction.

Police arrested two individuals for questioning in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a widow, whose body was found discarded in a cornfield near Chinnaselam in Kallakurichi district.

Over the past week, the police have been working to solve the case and identify the victim. In connection with the investigation, a local tea shop owner named Kumaresan and another individual, Bell Mani, have been taken into custody, and further inquiries are ongoing.

The victim, Nirmala, a 28-year-old woman from a village in Chinnasalem taluka, had already faced tragedy in her life, losing her husband to electrocution four years ago. She had been living with her two young daughters since then.

On 26 December 2024, she visited her home with her children, and later that night, she informed her family that she was heading out to deliver milk at the cooperative society. However, she never returned.

The following morning, a neighbour found her dupatta, mobile phone, and chappals scattered in a nearby field. Further investigation revealed the harrowing truth that the woman had been raped and murdered. The Chinnasalem police have registered a case and begun their inquiry. District Superintendent of Police Rajat Chaturvedi and DSP Devaraj personally inspected the crime scene and are overseeing the investigation.

The Supreme Court has upheld the Madras High Court’s directive for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, rejecting the Tamil Nadu government’s appeal against the order. The tragedy claimed the lives of 67 people in Kallakurichi district after they consumed illicit liquor laced with methanol, raising serious concerns about the enforcement of anti-spurious liquor laws in the state.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Pardiwala and Mahadevan dismissed the appeal, stating that the CBI is the appropriate agency to handle the investigation due to its inter-state implications, involving Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and other regions. The court emphasized that there is no obstacle to the continuation of the CBI’s investigation, reinforcing the Madras High Court’s decision.

The Tamil Nadu government argued that its police had made significant progress in the case, with 24 arrests, the methanol source traced, and key witnesses examined. It also highlighted the appointment of a one-man commission led by Justice (Retd.) B. Gokuldas and the transfer of the case to the CB-CID, which was awaiting toxicology reports before filing a charge sheet.

Despite these arguments, the Supreme Court affirmed the need for an impartial and comprehensive investigation by the CBI, citing public dissatisfaction with past inquiries into similar hooch tragedies. Petitioners from AIADMK, PMK, and BJP had argued that systemic failures and recurring incidents necessitated a central probe to ensure accountability and justice.

The CBI will now take over the investigation from the state police, who have been instructed to transfer all relevant case files and provide full cooperation.

Villagers in Kallakurichi have seized a tractor that was allegedly used to steal old iron rods and wooden items from the Thirunavalur temple. What shocked the villagers even more was that the tractor, which was reportedly transporting the temple’s property, had been hired by officials from the HR&CE department to sell the items as scrap.

This disturbing incident occurred at the Thirunavalur Sri Bhaktajaneswarar Temple, which had recently held its Kumbabhishekam on 21 November near Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi district. During renovations at the temple, iron and wooden items were stored in a room. However, on the morning of 16 December 2024, HR&CE department officials allegedly loaded these items onto a tractor in the early morning. They took them to an old scrap iron shop near Pu Mambakkam in the Ulundurpettai area.

The items were being loaded onto the tractor for the second time, which raised suspicions. Upon learning of this, Kallakurichi residents gathered around noon, seized the tractor, and questioned where the items were being taken. What the HR&CE officials revealed was a shock to the villagers. The officers stated that they had decided to sell the materials as scrap to fund the salaries of executive officers at another temple. When the villagers demanded to know whose orders they were following, the officers blamed higher officials but failed to provide any concrete answers.

Explaining the issue, one villager remarked, “The recent events at the Sri Bhaktajaneswarar Shiva Temple in Thirunavalur union, Kallakurichi district, an example how poorly the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments is operating in Tamil Nadu. Only recently the Kumbabhishekam ceremony completed and after the Kumbabhishekam, they took all the old items such as iron and wooden items from the temple, loaded them onto a tractor, and transported them to an iron (scrap) shop in Ulundurpet. After unloading about 20 tons, they came back again to take more items from the temple. When the villagers confronted them, they asked where the temple property was being taken. The officer responded that the items were being taken to a shop in Ulundurpet. When asked why, she claimed the Executive Officer (EO) ordered it. When the EO was questioned, she evaded and said the Joint Commissioner (JC) had ordered. The villagers then contacted the HR&CE Joint Commissioner via conference call, and he denied the claim, saying, ‘It’s not like that… I will speak in person.’ When asked why the items were taken, the EO woman said they were unloading everything there. The villagers then asked, ‘Why are you unloading them now? Where did you take them?’ She replied that the materials were needed to pay the salaries of workers at the Parikkal temple.”

A complaint has been filed with the Thirunavalur police against the Executive Officer of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, his assistant Lokesh, and the tractor owner, Ayyappan, for allegedly taking the temple’s old iron and wooden items. The police are currently investigating the matter.

The Madras High Court has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, which claimed the lives of approximately 67 people after they consumed illicitly brewed arrack. The tragedy has brought renewed attention to the recurring issue of spurious liquor sales in Tamil Nadu.

The directive was issued by a bench comprising Justice D. Krishnakumar and Justice P.B. Balaji. They instructed the CBI to expedite its investigation and directed the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) to transfer all case files and provide full cooperation to the central agency. The order was delivered in response to multiple petitions seeking a CBI inquiry into the incident.

The petitioners argued that the Kallakurichi incident exposed systemic failures in preventing the sale and consumption of spurious liquor. They contended that such hooch tragedies are not new in Tamil Nadu and that the state machinery, including the police and revenue authorities, had failed to act effectively.

Citing public dissatisfaction, the petitioners pointed to the transfer of the district collector and the suspension of the Commissioner of Police as indicators of deeper issues within the system. The people have lost faith in the investigating agency and the State itself, they argued.

Concerns were also raised about inter-state implications, with Methanol—the chemical responsible for the tragedy—allegedly sourced from Puducherry. The petitioners insisted that this required an investigation beyond state borders, making the CBI the appropriate agency to handle the case.

The Advocate General (AG) opposed the CBI probe, asserting that the state government had already taken extensive measures to address the tragedy. The AG highlighted that senior officials, including the Superintendent of Police, had been suspended, and the Additional Director General of Police (Enforcement) was removed from their post.

To further investigate the matter, the state government appointed a one-man commission led by Justice (Retd.) B. Gokuldas. The investigation has been transferred to the CB-CID, which has completed significant progress, the AG informed the court.

The AG revealed that 24 individuals had been arrested, the Methanol source had been traced, and witnesses were examined. The CB-CID is awaiting serology and toxicology reports before filing a charge sheet, the AG stated, arguing that transferring the case to the CBI at this stage would force the investigation to restart from scratch.

Petitioners criticized the CB-CID’s handling of previous hooch tragedies, describing their investigations as inadequate and contributing to public frustration. They argued that transferring the case to the CBI would ensure impartiality and prevent a repeat of past investigative failures.

The Kallakurichi tragedy has reignited debates about the state’s persistent challenges in curbing the sale of spurious liquor. Tamil Nadu has witnessed multiple incidents of methanol-laced alcohol causing mass casualties, raising questions about enforcement and accountability in tackling the problem.

As the CBI takes over the investigation, the central agency’s findings and actions will likely play a critical role in addressing these systemic issues and ensuring justice for the victims of the Kallakurichi tragedy.

The alcohol abolition conference conducted by Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) in the Kallakurichi district of Ulundurpettai found itself in a soup. Some cadre who had come to the event had grouped themselves and consumed alcohol.

Video footage from the event showed drunken youth creating a ruckus.

As soon as the event began, people, especially men, broke the barricades from all sides and stormed towards the stage. Unable to control them, police and bouncers were seen retreating. Some of them even misbehaved with the women police officers. Stuck among the sea of cadre, the women police officers were helpless. Women police officers are seen groped and assaulted.

Some of them started climbing the 50-ft cutouts, light towers, and flagpoles at the event premises and started cheering. In a video, one can see Thirumavalavan requesting the youth to not climb onto the cutouts placed as he was giving his speech from the stage – he says, “Please do not climb onto the cutouts. If it falls, it is dangerous for many. What 4-5 people are doing will affect many. Do not stand on the chairs.”

At one point, men entered the places where women were sitting, and women were caught in the crowd congestion. It came to a point where Thirumavalavan had to request the men from the stage not to make it unsafe for the women. He said, “Brother, do not crowd where the women are sitting. Why are you climbing up? Sit down. Get down. Do not behave like you will cause harm to the conference. Please be silent. Why are you climbing into the places where women are sitting? Won’t you listen to me? Please go back. If you go to the women’s area, where will they go? You have entered the press area also. We don’t know where the press went.”

The cadre did not listen to their own party members and began fighting with them. It is alleged that some of them consumed alcohol in groups at the backside of the event premises and came to the event.

Speakers at the event were also ironically seen saying, “No one should be seen drinking alcohol in public spaces in Tamil Nadu. At street corners, in public spaces, in schools, in the evenings, after school is over, in government office buildings, no one should consume alcohol.”

Later, the cadre entered the space given to the press and displaced the things kept there. When an angered journalist tried to question this behavior, a commotion ensued. Women who were caught in the crowd unable to go out were seen holding on to the barricades and waiting. The event ends with the cadre mostly youth taking over the stage and sitting on the chairs meant for the dignitaries.

A video from the Tamil Janam channel also exposes how random people entered the event by paying money and getting ID cards. It is evident that the person was unaware of which party was conducting the event and seemed to have already consumed alcohol before entering.

The speaker mentioned that he had come from Asanoor, stating, “I am the rowdy here.” They explained that they obtained their card for fifty rupees and arrived by bus for the meeting. They referred to the person speaking in the photo, saying, “I don’t know the name of the person, but he is Ambedkar.” They expressed awareness of the conference’s purpose, confirming that it was indeed a DMK party event when it was a VCK event.

The speaker noted that it was Gandhi Jayanti and mentioned that it would cost two hundred rupees to get alcohol and that he would need to go into the village for this. Despite the heat, he remarked that he did not drink alcohol.

On 23 June 2024, Tamil Nadu BJP State Secretary Dr SG Suryah brought attention to a news article that accused the Tamil Nadu police of attempting to fabricate a story, only to be thwarted by the Puducherry police.

The news article describes a situation where the Tamil Nadu police attempted to fabricate a story, but the Puducherry police intervened in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. According to the report, the Tamil Nadu government claimed that methanol for producing illegal liquor was sourced from Puducherry. After seizing the remaining methanol, the Tamil Nadu police allegedly headed to the house of a suspect’s grandmother in Madukarai.

However, before they arrived, the Puducherry police had already started their investigation at the exact location, ensuring all CCTV cameras were directed at the house. When the Tamil Nadu police arrived with methanol cans, they were reportedly required to conduct their investigation under Puducherry police supervision. The article claimed that the Puducherry police presence thwarted Tamil Nadu police’s alleged plan to stage a discovery of methanol at the scene. Furthermore, the Puducherry police reportedly instructed the Tamil Nadu team to clarify the true source of the methanol and warned against falsely implicating Puducherry based on the Tamil Nadu government’s claims. The Puducherry police are also monitoring the CCTV footage around the suspect’s grandmother’s house.

SG Suryah shared this article and posted on X saying, “According to this news, Tamil Nadu police took methanol cans to a suspect’s house in Puducherry to shift blame on Kallakurichi hooch tragedy to Pondicherry state but vigilant Puducherry police broke DMK government’s cunning plan. Right time for Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene.”

For sharing this post on X, the CB-CID wing of Tamil Nadu police in Vizhuppuram sent summons to the BJP leader asking him to present himself on 20 July 2014 at the Vizhuppuram CB-CID office.

This is not the first time SG Suryah has been summoned by the Tamil Nadu police for his posts on social media platform X.

Earlier, he was arrested for an X post against Communist MP Su. Venkatesan in which he chastised the Communist party and the MP for turning a blind eye to the death of hygiene worker who was made to clean a sewer allegedly by a Communist councillor. While the incident happened in Cuddalore, Suryah had inadvertently shared it as Madurai which he later corrected.

The police had also summoned SG Suryah in another case involving The Commune’s report on the standoff between HR&CE officials and the Deekshitars of the Chidambaram Temple.

With this latest summons, Suryah has alleged that the DMK government under MK Stalin is attempting to harass him by foisting cases against him for social media posts.

“Instead of catching the real culprits, the CB-CID officials are investigating those who criticize the DMK and the Tamil Nadu government in an attempt to intimidate the opposition parties.”, he said.

He further said in an X post about how the officials were waiting for him at his home to serve summons, just when he returned from his recent trip to the USA.

“No matter how hard they try to target me, the DMK government cannot do anything to me. My organization has prepared me to face any false cases and political vendetta.”, he wrote.
