In a shocking and expected turn of events, the DMK government in Tamil Nadu has appealed to the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court’s verdict which ordered for the case to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Lavanya, who was studying in class 12 at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School in Michaelpatti near Thanjavur, committed suicide by drinking pesticide after she was allegedly tortured to convert to Christianity by the school.

While the initial plea of Lavanya’s parents had sought for a CB-CID probe, they sought a CBI probe in the last hearing on 28th January 2022.

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Monday (January 31) ordered to transfer the suicide case of 17 year old girl Lavanya to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The DMK and its allies along with their supporters have been trying to rule out the religious conversion angle since the beginning.

Thanjavur Superintendent of Police Ravali Priya had held a pressmeet in which she said that there was no religious angle.

Following this, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, and Social Welfare & Women Empowerment Minister Geetha Jeevan too made statements ruling out the conversion angle which has been mentioned by the girl in her dying declaration as well as repeatedly emphasized by her parents.

The DMK and its allies saw the High Court’s ruling as a setback both administratively and politically.  There were speculations that the DMK government in Tamil Nadu would be appealing against the High Court’s verdict which has now been affirmed.

The case of the 17-yr-old girl child from Thanjavur, who committed suicide by consuming pesticide, has become a huge topic of discussion and debate. Amidst the chaos of discussions whether it was case of forceful conversion or not, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has assured that investigation and action will be taken against those found guilty.

In a tweet, Priyank Kanoongo said in Hindi, “Severe action will taken on the basis of the statement of the 17-yr-old who committed suicide and her parents. All point will be clearly investigated and nothing will escape the clutches of justice.” He also said that action will be taken on institutions that forcefully covert children.

In a notice that was attached along with the tweet, the Chairperson said, “Action will be surely taken against the Christian Missionary who has been allegedly behind the torture and forceful conversion of a 12th grade student and her subsequent suicide, in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Orders to take the necessary action has been given to the DGP of Tamil Nadu.”

This announcement from the NCPCR Chairperson comes just 2 days after a complaint had been filed against Ravali Priya IPS, with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The complaint sought disciplinary action against the IPS officer for allegedly trying to mislead the investigation of the minor Hindu girl’s suicide who was reportedly subjected to harassment and forced religious conversion. In her press meet, Ravali Priya had said that there was no evidence of forceful conversion of the Minor Hindu girl, even though the child had clearly stated the same in her video testimony. The complaint came after this press meet.
