Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda will select the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election on Tuesday. The announcement was made following a high-level meeting of NDA leaders held in New Delhi on Thursday.

The resolution to authorise PM Modi and Nadda was passed during the meeting, which was presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who was present at the gathering, briefed the media afterwards, stating that the final candidate chosen by the Prime Minister and the BJP President would have the consensus and support of all NDA partners.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, Lok Janshakti Party’s Chirag Paswan, the TDP’s Lavu Krishna Devarayalu, and the Republican Party of India’s Ramdas Athawale also attended the meeting. Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had already announced unconditional support for the BJP’s choice of candidate on Wednesday.

The official announcement of the NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate is expected to be made on Tuesday, ahead of the August 21 deadline for filing nominations. The Vice Presidential election was necessitated by the mid-term resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who vacated the post citing medical reasons.

However, his departure has sparked widespread speculation of underlying tensions between him and the government. The vice-presidential election is set to take place on 9 September 2025. The Vice President of India is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

With a clear numerical advantage in Parliament, the NDA holds sufficient strength to ensure the victory of its chosen candidate. The Vice President of India also serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, making the post politically significant.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has played a significant role in addressing India’s critical health issues transforming the healthcare care research landscape, said JP Nadda, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare on Thursday. Nadda said this while in his virtual address at the Department of Health Research and the ICMR (DHR-ICMR) Health Research Excellence Summit 2024 in the national capital. T

The event also marked ICMR’s 113th Foundation Day, celebrating the institution’s commitment to advancing biomedical research in India.

“Today, we celebrate over a century of ICMR’s unwavering commitment to advancing health research and improving the lives of millions. ICMR has been at the forefront of biomedical research, playing a pivotal role in addressing some of the most critical health challenges.” Nadda said. “From combating infectious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, and Covid-19, to advancing solutions for non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, and nutritional disorders — ICMR has left an indelible mark on India’s healthcare landscape,” he added. Anupriya Patel, Minister of State of Health lauded ICMR for being a “pioneer in advancing scientific research and innovation in India” Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog said that ICMR’s contributions will “position India as a global leader in health research”.

Meanwhile, the ICMR has launched a first-of-its-kind initiative — First in the World Challenge research grant — to foster novel, out-of-the-box, futuristic ideas from researchers across the country. The ideas can include new knowledge, discovery or development of breakthrough health technologies (vaccines, drugs or therapeutics, diagnostics, interventions, etc.) which has never been thought, tested or tried in the world to date. The apex research body noted that the “grant calling for bold research idea” is inspired by the Chandryaan-3 mission, which made a historic landing on the south pole of the Moon.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president J.P. Nadda, on an election campaign in Jharkhand on Saturday, lambasted the Hemant Soren government for ‘stalling’ the development of the state through its ‘regressive and anti-people’ policies. Addressing election rallies in Ramgarh and Bishrampur, J.P. Nadda described the coalition government of JMM-Congress and RJD as an alliance of corrupt people and asserted that the people of the state have resolved to overthrow the government, this time.

The BJP president, pointing to many Opposition leaders behind bars for alleged graft, said that corruption has become the identity of the INDI alliance. “In Jharkhand, in the past five years, they looted forests and land and endangered the existence of tribals. Rs 350 crore was found from the house of the Congress MP here and Rs 35 crore was found from the house of the PA of the minister. There is a need to think how the minister might have committed the loot,” he pointed out. J.P. Nadda further told the gathering about PM Modi’s special affinity for the state and highlighted the series of schemes launched in the state including Ayushman Bharat, PM Jan Dhan, Vikas Bharat Yatra. “None of the governments in the country for 70 years did anything for the tribals. As soon as Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, he took steps to make the tribes proud. The birth anniversary of Lord Birsa Munda was declared Tribal Pride Day. When Lord Birsa’s 150th birth anniversary will be celebrated on November 15 this year, big events will be organized across the country to commemorate it. The government has declared 2025 as the Year of Tribal Pride,” J.P. Nadda told the crowd, amid cheers and applause.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allotted Rs 130 crore for the tap water scheme in Jharkhand, but the government here did not allow it to get off the ground. “The government increased the budget for tribal development by three times and the budget for Eklavya schools for tribal areas by 21 times,” he said. The BJP chief further promised that once a double-engine government is formed in the state, development will gain wings. At least 10 new medical colleges will be opened. Under the Gogo Didi scheme, women will be given Rs 2,100 in their accounts every month.

Ayushman Bharat is the world’s largest publicly funded health coverage programme, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, J.P. Nadda said on Friday. He said this while highlighting the key achievements of the Union Health Ministry in the first 100 days of the government at a press conference, in the national capital.

J.P. Nadda said that the recent announcement of expansion of the Ayushman Bharat PMJAY scheme to provide health coverage to all senior citizens, above 70 years of age, irrespective of income group, will potentially benefit around 6 crore individuals across 4.5 crore families. The Minister informed that the expanded scheme will be implemented from October this year. He also highlighted a significant advancement in the U-WIN Portal. “The U-WIN portal has been developed for full digitization of vaccination services for complete vaccination record of pregnant women and children from birth to 17 years under the Universal Immunization Programme,” Nadda said.

The portal is available in 11 regional languages including Hindi. J.P. Nadda said that the portal is already operational on pilot basis. “As on 16th September, 6.46 crore beneficiaries have been registered, 1.04 crore vaccination sessions have been held and 23.06 crore administered vaccine doses have been recorded on the portal,” the Health Minister said. Further, J.P. Nadda shared that medical colleges in the country increased more than 8 per cent — from 706 in 2023-24 to 766 in 2024-25 — and MBBS and PG seats in the country. This would lead to an increase in the availability of doctors in the healthcare system, he said.”There has been a 98 per cent increase in medical colleges from 387 in 2013-14 to 766 in 2024-25. During the same period, 379 new medical colleges have been established and, presently there are 766 (423 in government and 343 in private) medical colleges in the country”.

MBBS seats also increased by 6.30 per cent — from 1,08,940 in 2023-24 to 1,15,812 in 2024-25. “MBBS seats increased by 64,464 (i.e., 125 per cent) from 2013-14 (51,348 seats) to 2024-25 (11,5812 seats).” Another significant achievement in the last 100 days is the establishment of the National Medical Register (NMR) — a comprehensive dynamic database for all allopathic (MBBS) registered doctors in India. NMR is linked with the Aadhaar ID of the doctors that ensures the individual’s authenticity. “NMR being a key component of the country’s Ayushman Bharat digital mission, it would be part of Healthcare Professional Registry (HPR),” the Health Minister said. He further noted that NMR will ensure provision of data covering details of around 13 lakh doctors in the country.

BJP National President J.P. Nadda has voiced out support for Ilaiyaraaja who has been facing a volley of attacks from ‘Dravidian Stockists’ ever since the latter appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his development initiatives.

Maestro Ilaiyaraaja has written the foreword for the book titled ‘Ambedkar & Modi – Reformer’s Ideas, Performer’s Implementation’ brought out by Blue Graph Digital Foundation.

In his foreword for the book, Ilaiyaraaja has lauded PM Modi’s women-centric development initiatives like raising of marriage age for women, free LPG gas cylinders and schemes related to education of girl children.

He noted that Dr. Ambedkar would be proud to see the change brought about by the law against Triple Talaq and ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative.

“The book also points out where Dr. Ambedkar and Narendra Modi come together as personalities. Both experienced poverty and oppression and worked to eradicate it. Both were big dreamers about India who believe in action.”, Ilaiyaraaja notes.

However, his views on the Prime Minister has irked the supporters of the ruling regime in Tamil Nadu and their allies.

Ilaiyaraaja has been facing vituperative attacks by Dravidian Stockists for expressing his opinion about the Prime Minister.

Netizens who identify themselves as ‘Dravidian Stockists’, ‘Periyarists’ and ‘Ambedkarites’ started trending a vile hashtag targetting the maestro.

In light of this, BJP National President J.P. Nadda in a statement said “In Tamil Nadu, elements aligned to the ruling party have left no stone unturned in verbally lynching, smearing and humiliating one of India’s tallest musical maestros just because he has views not palatable to one political party and their allies. Is this democractic?”

“One can have different views and yet coexist happily but why take to insults?”, Nadda asked in his elaborate letter where he provided a rejoinder to the joint statement issued by Opposition parties.

After it emerged that the parents of the nine-year old minor rape victim had not given their consent to share their photographs and thus reveal their identity on social media, the BJP on Tuesday (17 August) demanded that Twitter should once again lock the account of former Congress president Rahul Gandhi for making false claims.

Rahul Gandhi had earlier violated the law when he had shared the pictures of the family of the minor rape victim on social media. However, the Congress scion claimed that he had the consent of the girl’s family, and few days later his account was restored.

Earlier, BJP chief JP Nadda accused the Congress party of playing caste politics and said such actions show the low level of politics done by people at the top.

Earlier while inaugurating the party district committee office in Kozhikode, BJP chief JP Nadda said, “First he (Rahul Gandhi) politicised the issue, then reveal the identity of victim by sharing picture of parents. When law asked about it, he lied to everyone.”

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra, who was addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Delh,i demanded that Twitter should once again lock Rahul Gandhi’s account as the victim’s family has denied that they ever gave consent to the Congress leader for posting the pictures.

“Rahul Gandhi has lost credibility and is a habitual liar. Earlier, when Twitter locked his account, Congress party in letter claimed that they taken consent of family to share their picture, now the victim mother denied the claim. The public has already locked his political account, now Twitter should also once again lock his account,” Patra said.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president JP Nadda on 4 May said that the BJP will not tolerate the “blood-stained politics” of those wanting to stay in power in West Bengal. Nadda was speaking to the press after meeting with the bereaved family of dead BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar in Beliaghata, Kolkata. Sarkar was allegedly killed by supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after results of the West Bengal polls were declared on May 2.

“BJP will not tolerate the blood-stained politics of those wanting to stay in power. Mamata Banerjee’s political pretense and hypocrisy, and the manner in which she says that she wants to bring peace – is this how you bring about peace? We will expose this”, said Nadda.

“We will make the public of West Bengal aware on how the next five years will be spent in their [TMC’s] hands”, the BJP chief added. Nadda is on a two-day visit to the state.

The BJP chief was accompanied by Union Minister V Muraleedharan, state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh and state general secretary Locket Chatterjee.

There are an alarming number of reports of Hindu shops and residences – be they sympathisers of the BJP or the TMC – being attacked and looted by supporters of the TMC across the state of West Bengal. There are also reports of murders and rapes of Hindu women being allegedly perpetrated by the TMC.

Former MP and BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta said that over a thousand Hindu families in Nanoor, Birbhum district of West Bengal, have left their homes, fearing violence from TMC workers.

Meanwhile, the Indic Collective Trust has filed a plea in the Supreme Court, seeking a declaration from the court that the constitutional machinery in the state of West Bengal has broken down, so that President’s rule can be imposed in the State under Article 356 of the Constitution.

As the massive surge of post-violence in West Bengal continues unabated, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda reached Kolkata to take cognisance of the situation in the state. According to several reports, there have been large-scale coordinated attacks against BJP workers and sympathisers across the state, carried out by members and supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

JP Nadda, on his arrival at Kolkata, said that incidents seen in the aftermath of the West Bengal poll results are reminiscent of the partition-related violence in India.

“The incidents which we saw after the results of West Bengal polls shock us and make us worried. I had heard of such incidents during India’s partition. We had never seen such intolerance after the results of a poll, in independent India”, Nadda said. The BJP national president is on a two-day visit to the state.

“We are committed to fight this ideological battle and the activities of TMC which is full of intolerance. We are ready to fight democratically. I will go to South 24 Parganas now and visit the houses of those workers later whose lives ended a few hours after the results”, he added.

Nadda, along with state party chief Dilip Ghosh, visited the residence of a BJP worker, which was allegedly vandalised by TMC workers.

Nadda also visited the house of BJP worker Haran Adhikari, who was beaten to death allegedly by TMC supporters. They also allegedly attacked Adhikari’s wife and children.

“Mamata ji, what your party did after winning, speaks about your belief in democracy. TMC workers & leaders are saying that all these incidents on social media are fake. You’ve seen how Haran Adhikari’s wife & son were crying. I request media to tell truth to the nation”, the BJP chief said.

Nadda met the families of party workers who were affected in post-election violence, in Pratapnagar of South 24 Parganas. He was also accompanied by state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh, national general secretary Bhupender Yadav and state general secretary Locket Chatterjee.

Union Minister for Textiles, Smrithi Irani who was on a three-day Amethi tour on Friday (December 25) has thrown the gauntlet at Sonia Gandhi by saying that in the next Lok Sabha elections, the BJP will snatch Rae Bareli, the Hindustan Times reported

“Remember, if you continue to harass BJP workers, then in 2024 we will snatch Rae Bareli, too,” the BJP leader said at a public meeting.

The former television superstar in 2019 general elections, did the unthinkable when she dethroned Rahul Gandhi from the Amethi constituency.

This declaration could not have come at the worst time when Rahul Gandhi has again left the country on a foreign visit, reinstating the fact, he is not serious about politics nor is he interested in taking responsibility for his party.

On Friday, December 25), Irani accused Rahul Gandhi of “lying and misleading” farmers over the Centre’s recent farm laws.

Addressing a farmers’ rally in her parliamentary constituency Amethi, Irani said, “Rahul Gandhi is telling lies and misleading farmers. He is shedding crocodile tears for farmers and misleading them, his own jija (brother-in-law) has encroached upon the land of farmers.”

Irani who is known for her determination and never give up attitude called on Rahul Gandhi for a debate on the farmers’ issue and called Congress general secretary for Utter Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s proposed Kisan Yatra in the state as a “stunt”.

The union minister for textiles and women and child development also tagged a tweet by BJP chief JP Nadda to question Rahul Gandhi’s opposition to farm laws.

She tweeted that Amethi’s farmers, fed up with the Congress, voted for the BJP in the last Lok Sabha polls.

The union minister also spoke of projects that had been started in Amethi since she became the local MP in 2019 and also talked about how the Yogi Adityanath government had also sanctioned big-ticket projects for Rae Bareli, too.

Apart from AIIMS-Rae Bareli, the Ganga Expressway, which would connect Meerut to Prayagraj, will pass through Rae Bareli.

In 2014, when Smrithi Irani lost the election to Rahul Gandhi and after that, she went back there over and over even after Deepak Singh, the Congress MLC had previously described Smriti as a “political tourist” in Amethi.
