A Maoist was killed in a fierce encounter with police and security forces near Sauta village under Goilkera police station limits in West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, on 13 August morning. An SLR rifle was recovered from the site, officials said.

Jharkhand Police IG (Operations) Dr Michael Raj said the encounter took place during a joint search operation in the Goilkera area, a known Maoist stronghold. He said as the team entered the forested hill terrain of Sauta, Maoist cadres opened indiscriminate fire. The forces retaliated, triggering a gun battle that lasted for nearly an hour, with several rounds of firing exchanged from both sides.

According to the IG, the rebels suffered significant losses. A Maoist body was recovered after the area was secured, though the deceased is yet to be identified. He said security forces have intensified combing operations in the area to track down Maoists who managed to escape. For the past several weeks, police have been conducting sustained anti-Naxal operations in the Saranda region and adjoining forests  dismantling Maoist bunkers, seizing large caches of IEDs, and recovering weapons. Officials say the campaign aims to eradicate Maoist influence from the region. Dr Raj asserted that the forces have been achieving “continuous success” and expressed confidence that Maoist activities in the area will soon be eliminated.

This year alone, 23 Maoists have been killed in various encounters across Jharkhand. In April, eight Maoists including top leader Prayag Manjhi alias Vivek were gunned down in a major operation in Bokaro district’s Lugu Hills. Earlier, police had claimed that Maoist activities are now restricted only to the Saranda jungles in Jharkhand. They said they have been eliminated from other areas. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier said that the security forces will wipe out Maoism from the country by March next year. He also appealed to the Maoists to surrender and join the mainstream by availing the government’s rehabilitation package.

The journalist, comfortably sitting far from the ground realities of Jharkhand, seems indifferent to the aggressive evangelism that seeks to uproot and alter the tribal way of life, often with promises of aid followed by abandonment once the conversions are achieved. However, the journalist is alarmed when Hindu groups work to reconnect these communities to their cultural roots, branding the effort as problematic. A recent piece in The Washington Post exemplifies this concern, as it attempts to create tension between Hindus and tribal communities in Jharkhand.

Published on 1 February 2025, the article ‘Hindu nationalists make gains among India’s tribes and spur backlash’ penned by karishma mehrotra accused Hindu groups of running ‘evangelical campaigns’ aimed at converting tribals to Hinduism. It further claimed that organizations like the RSS were undermining tribal cultures by persuading them to identify as part of the larger Hindu community.

This attack comes at a time when Jharkhand is already grappling with significant proselytism and conversion tactics from Muslim and Christian groups. The Washington Post article suggested that right-wing Hindu groups are trying to transform the country into a Hindu nation, aiming to assimilate millions of tribal people who have traditionally been outside the mainstream religious fold.

The piece belittled the efforts of Hindu organizations trying to preserve the cultural identity of the tribal communities, which are at risk due to predatory conversion tactics. It appears the resistance from these groups against evangelical practices has unsettled the interests of the Washington Post.

Contrary to the newspaper’s claims, Hindu groups in Jharkhand aren’t aggressively pushing for conversions. With Hindus already constituting a majority in the state, their main focus is on preventing the large-scale conversions promoted by Muslim and Christian evangelical groups.

The Washington Post also targeted organizations such as Vikas Bharti and Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram. The article accused Vikas Bharti of dividing the tribal communities by distinguishing them between Hindus, Christians, and nature worshippers. It misrepresented an invitation by Kumkum Maitra of Vikas Bharti to local tribals during Shivratri as an attempt to proselytize nature worshippers.

Another organization, Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, was also criticized for allegedly competing with Christian evangelists in neighboring Chhattisgarh. The Washington Post referred to controversial figures to make exaggerated claims about the organization’s activities, including the accusation that Vikas Bharti was conducting ‘ghar wapsi’ (reconversion) of tribals who had previously converted to Christianity.

The article also touched on the ongoing controversy around the Sarna Code, which seeks to classify tribal communities as a distinct religious group. In 2020, the Jharkhand government moved to include Sarna as a separate religion in the 2021 Census. While the BJP supported the initiative, it remains a contentious issue. Some in the RSS believe that tribal communities should be considered part of Hinduism, a belief actively promoted through organizations like Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram.

Sarna Code supporters argue that recognizing the Sarna identity would better protect the cultural practices of tribal communities. However, the Washington Post framed the debate as a conflict between Hindus and ‘nature worshippers’, suggesting that the push for the Sarna Code was a challenge to Hindu organizations’ efforts.

The article concludes by highlighting a tribal nurse working with Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, who allegedly felt forced to identify as Hindu despite identifying as Sarna. This serves to further paint the situation as one of coercion and division.

In sum, the Washington Post‘s article reflects a broader attempt to stir discord and create a divide between Hindu groups and tribal communities in Jharkhand, presenting Hindu efforts to reconnect tribals with their cultural roots as a threat to tribal identity.

Who Is Karishma Mehrotra?

Karishma Mehrotra is a journalist known for her anti-establishment views, working for The Washington Post. She has often been accused of writing articles that criticize the Indian government and promote anti-Hindu sentiments. Despite facing backlash and having some of her narratives debunked, she continues to push these agendas under the guise of journalism, with little regard for the consequences.

Her writings have been viewed as an attempt to tarnish India’s image on international platforms, often through misleading or inaccurate portrayals. Below are examples of her work that highlight this ongoing effort to spread biased narratives about the government.

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy claimed on Thursday that people want the NDA to win the Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Union Minister Kumaraswamy made the statement while reacting to the exit poll predictions giving edge to the BJP-led NDA alliance in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.

“The exit poll predictions are one aspect. It is the wish of people the NDA emerge victorious in both Maharashtra and Jharkhand,” he said. Regarding the Channapatna bypolls in Karnataka, he said, “I have actively participated in election campaigning for 15 days in the constituency. I know the feelings of the people. The NDA candidate is going to win.” Union Minister Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil has contested as the NDA candidate from the Channapatna. Earlier, the seat was represented by HD Kumaraswamy. The Channapatna seat recorded 88.80 per cent voter turnout in the by-election. Congress nominee for Channapatna C. P. Yogeshwara said the state Tourism and Waqf Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan’s objectionable remarks against Union Minister Kumaraswamy have cost the party Vokaligga votes.

Commenting on the row over the cancellation of Below-Poverty-Line (BPL) ration cards in the state and Congress leaders referring to cancellations done by the Centre, HD Kumaraswamy said, “Why did not the Congress government say anything for a week?” He also attacked the Congress government in the state, saying, “The state government was not in a position to answer. The Chief Minister will issue one statement and the Food Minister will issue another.”

“There is no clarity among themselves. I won’t speak lightly about the guarantee schemes,” the Union Minister maintained.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka Food Minister K. H. Muniyappa said, “There is no clarity among themselves. I won’t speak lightly about the guarantee schemes,” the Union Minister maintained. The Minister also said that the cancellation of BPL cards was limited to government employees and people who pay income tax.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that once the BJP formed the government in Jharkhand, Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingyas, who are taking over the rights of locals in Santhal Pargana region, will be kicked out. He said this while addressing a rally in the Rajmahal Assembly constituency of Jharkhand on Monday.

Talking about the impact of a double-engine government, CM Yogi asserted that states under the BJP rule have no place for infiltrators. He hit out at the current Jharkhand government, alleging that it has turned the state into a stronghold for Rohingya Muslims. “I have come to tell you one thing. In Uttar Pradesh, where we have a double-engine government, there are no infiltrators, and no one dares to slaughter cows or disrespect our daughters. If anyone dares, he is booked a one-way ticket to Yamraj. The JMM-Congress government cannot do this,” CM Yogi said.

Training guns at the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress, he accused their leaders of corruption. Referring to recent raids, the CM alleged, “People of Jharkhand are poor, but crores of rupees were discovered at the residence of Alamgir Alam, a Minister in the JMM-led government, as well as at the house of a Congress MP. Was this money Congress’, RJD’s, or JMM’s? This was money sent by Modi ji for Jharkhand’s development, but these leaders looted it.” The UP CM assured voters that after the counting of votes on November 23, those responsible for corruption would be held accountable. According to him, voting surveys from the first phase of the election, covering 43 seats, indicate that the BJP-led NDA is on track to secure a two-thirds majority. “BJP governments bring good governance and eliminate lawlessness,” he asserted.

Recalling his tenure as a Member of Parliament during the formation of Jharkhand, CM Yogi attacked Congress and the RJD for initially opposing the state’s creation. “Today, both parties are misleading the state by aligning with JMM,” he alleged. Discussing the BJP’s election manifesto, he highlighted the party’s promises such as permanent housing for 21 lakh people, a monthly stipend of Rs 2,100 under the Gogo Didi scheme for women, unemployment benefits of Rs 2,000 per month for graduates and post-graduates, and Rs 5,000 per month under the PM Internship Scheme.

He said the party has also pledged 2.87 lakh government jobs for Jharkhand’s youth and free sand for house construction to every family. CM Yogi urged the public, “We must stay united, division will only lead to our downfall. Leaders who divide society along caste lines are enemies of the nation. We must move forward with the vision of a developed India.” He appealed to voters to support BJP candidate Anant Ojha in the Rajmahal constituency (ST).

Assam Chief Minister and BJP’s Jharkhand election co-incharge, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Saturday stressed the need for a BJP government in Jharkhand to safeguard “Roti, Beti, and Mati” (livelihood, daughters, and land).

Amid heated campaigning for the second phase of elections in the state, Sarma, addressing an election rally in Bokaro, urged the people to unite for this election, stating that divisions in society have previously weakened their strength. “As long as we stay united, we are safe,” he said, stressing the importance of communal solidarity in this electoral battle. He claimed that the current state government has allowed the infiltration of Bangladeshis into regions like Santhal Parganas, which, according to him, is causing a decline in the tribal population. “Infiltrators are deceiving our daughters, marrying them, and usurping their lands,” he alleged, warning that the very identity of Jharkhand is under threat.

Targeting the Hemant Soren government, Sarma said: “The current administration is running like ‘Bunty and Babli,’ deceiving the youth with hollow promises of jobs and unemployment allowances. This election, the people are determined to show them the exit door.” The Assam CM also accused leaders like Irfan Ansari and Alamgir Alam of dividing the state along communal lines. “If we remain united, candidates like Irfan Ansari and Alamgir Alam will not win elections. Today, Ram Navami processions are restricted, and idol immersions for Durga Puja face hurdles, but Muharram processions go unimpeded. Unity is our strength; no one will dare stop our traditions if we stand together,” he asserted. He urged voters to consider the safety of their families before casting their ballots. “If you vote for leaders like Irfan Ansari, they won’t be there to protect your daughters if someone targets them. Think of your own daughters before supporting such candidates,” Sarma cautioned.

Drawing the attention of the public to alleged discrimination, he claimed, “Schools in areas like Pakur, Sahibganj, and Jamtara remain closed on Fridays for namaz. If that is the case, why not close schools on Tuesdays so we can worship Hanuman Ji?” He also pointed to a recent controversy over a prayer hall built inside the Jharkhand Assembly, which was later closed after protests. Sarma expressed confidence in the BJP’s strong performance in the first phase of elections and urged people to maintain the same enthusiasm for the second phase also. “The fight is for our identity, and we need to ensure victory in this decisive election,” he declared.

In a scathing attack on the JMM-Congress and RJD coalition government of Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said that the ruling government conspired to change the demography of the state through land jihad and love jihad. While addressing an election rally in Jamshedpur, the UP CM said that this government (coalition) has promoted land jihad and love jihad which has been made a part of the conspiracy to change the demography of Jharkhand.

“Recently the honourable court of Jharkhand had to express concern on why the population of tribes in Santhal decreased from 42 per cent to 28 per cent. Where did these people go? How did a large population become a part of another community?” he questioned. Yogi Adityanath called upon the people of Jharkhand to once again elect a BJP government in the state to honour the spirit with which Atal Bihari Vajpayee had created a separate state in 2000 and to make a developed and safe Jharkhand. “In this state, Bangladeshis and Rohingyas are infiltrating. The height of audacity is when they pelt stones on Maa Durga and Ramnavami processions during festivals. Before 2017, it used to happen in UP as well, but now there is no stone pelting on the procession because those who do so, face consequences,” he said.

Referring to the strict steps taken to end the mafia and goonda raj in Uttar Pradesh, CM Yogi said that when the Ayodhya case was in the court, the stone pelters used to say that rivers of blood would flow. “But today, there is neither curfew nor riot in UP. Just like stone pelters were eliminated from Kashmir after the BJP government is formed, Naxalism will also be eliminated from Jharkhand,” he added. Yogi Adityanath appealed to the people of Jharkhand to give a befitting reply to the conspiracy to divide them on the basis of castes. He said that those who divide people in the name of caste, region and language are the same people who will not stand with them in times of crisis. “Congress has been hurting the country since 1947. RJD did the same thing in Bihar and JMM in Jharkhand. The way Rohingyas started infiltrating into Jharkhand. If the demography changes in this way, then these people, who are stopping the processions today, will not allow the ringing of bells and conches inside homes in the coming time,” he said.

“Bring BJP and take out a safe Ramnavami procession. The history of the country is witnesses that whenever people have been divided in the name of caste, region and language; they have been brutally cut down,” CM Yogi added. The UP CM called Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Congress and RJD as messengers of destruction. “These people are angels of corruption. Congress, JMM and RJD snatched the livelihood of the poor, forced farmers to commit suicide and youth to migrate. This area, which is rich in natural resources, is known for its mica mines. A poor person cannot get even a trolley of sand to build a house, but sand mafia, forest mafia, liquor mafia and land mafia are flourishing with the protection of the government. The only solution is BJP,” he added.

CM Yogi said that those who used to say that Ram Mandir will not be built in Ayodhya, are seeing that the temple has been built and Ram Lalla has also been installed. “The new Uttar Pradesh of the new India does not spare those who trouble innocent citizens and Hindus,” he added. He said that the Congress, JMM and RJD’s INDI alliance which is promoting corruption, anarchy and hooliganism in Jharkhand is playing with the nation’s self-respect and security.

Yogi appealed to the people to vote in the elections to improve the present and make the future bright. “Vote them out and the NDA government will do the rest,” he said. During the public meeting, Union Minister and Koderma MP Annapurna Devi, Jharkhand in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Laxmikant Vajpayee, among others were present.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mounted a sharp attack on Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, accusing him of deceiving the people by swearing falsely in the name of his father, Shibu Soren. Speaking at an election rally in Jamshedpur on Thursday in support of NDA candidates, Sarma remarked, “Hemant Soren is the only leader in the country who has lied in his father’s name.” Sarma criticised Soren for making grand promises during the previous election campaign, such as providing five lakh jobs for the youth, unemployment allowances of Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 per month, and Rs 2,000 monthly ‘stove allowances’ for women, but failed to deliver on any of them.

He said, “The youth have no future under the Hemant Soren government. Every time exams like CGL are held, the papers are sold for money.” Sarma further alleged that Hemant Soren and Minister Banna Gupta have obstructed the smooth conduct of competitive exams in Jharkhand. He vowed that if the BJP forms the next government, its first Cabinet meeting would initiate a CBI enquiry into the JSSC-CGL exam scam. “Those responsible for leaking exam papers during the JMM-Congress regime will face severe consequences under a BJP government,” he asserted. Talking about rising crime and violence against women in the state, Sarma claimed, “Jharkhand has seen the highest number of murders of women in the last five years, and the honour of daughters has been violated. The state ranks number one in crimes against women under the current government of infiltrators, mafia, and brokers.” Outlining the BJP’s vision for the state, Sarma spoke of the party’s “panch pranas (five vows)” for governance.

“Once in power, our first Cabinet meeting will approve the ‘Gogo Didi’ scheme, which will provide Rs 2,100 monthly to women. We also promise to create 1.5 lakh jobs every year,” he said. Sarma expressed confidence that the BJP, in alliance with the Janata Dal United (JD-U), AJSU Party, and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), would win the upcoming elections and form the next government in Jharkhand.

Ahead of the rally, BJP candidate Purnima Das Sahu (Jamshedpur East), Meera Munda (Potka), AJSU Party’s Ramchandra Sahis (Jugsalai), and JD-U candidate Saryu Rai (Jamshedpur West) filed their nomination papers. All four candidates were present on the dais with Himanta Biswa Sarma in Jamshedpur.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while addressing a rally in Sahibganj, Jharkhand on Friday, promised to drive out Bangladeshi infiltrators if the BJP comes to power in the state.

The rally marked the launch of the ‘Parivartan Yatra,’ which aimed to deliver the message of ousting the current government and establishing a BJP-led administration that would focus on the state’s development.

HM Shah accused the Hemant Soren-led government of protecting Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators and vowed that a BJP government would ensure their expulsion from Santhal Pargana.

Describing the current state government as the most corrupt, HM Shah cited alleged scams involving MGNREGA (Rs 1,000 crore), land (Rs 600 crore), mining (Rs 1,000 crore), and liquor (Rs 40 crore). He further alleged that the government misappropriated land meant for the Army.

He emphasised that the Parivartan Yatra’s objective was not just to replace the JMM-Congress-RJD government but to establish a government that would eradicate corruption and remove illegal immigrants from the state.

The Union Home Minister said that the Hemant Soren government had broken several promises, such as providing five lakh jobs annually and giving Rs 2,500 monthly to widows, neither of which had been fulfilled.

HM Shah expressed concern over the slogans demanding that Hindus and tribals leave Jharkhand, which he claimed were raised in Pakur district.

He asked, “Did the land belong to tribals or Bangladeshi-Rohingya infiltrators?”

He argued that only a BJP government could safeguard the state’s interests, accusing the current administration of using infiltrators as a vote bank.

He also welcomed the Jharkhand High Court’s order on Bangladeshi infiltration. He stated that the Union Home Ministry, in collaboration with the state government, would form a committee to investigate the intrusion issue.

Highlighting issues related to youth employment, HM Shah accused the state government of leaking exam papers for various job recruitments, including those for Junior Engineers, Lab Assistants, Municipality, Graduate-Level Jobs, and JPSC.

He assured that a BJP government would take strict action against those involved in such leaks.

Other BJP leaders, including state President Babulal Marandi and former Chief Minister Champai Soren, attended the rally.

Droupadi Murmu has scripted history by becoming the first leader from the tribal community to become the Indian President. She is also the youngest person and the second woman to occupy the highest office of the country.

It has taken 75 years after becoming an independent nation and 70 years since becoming a republic for our country to achieve this feat.

Detractors have derided this tremondous feat as tokenism by Modi Government. They’ve questioned whether the rise of Madam President Murmu is a true step in empowering the tribal population by BJP.

But here are a few facts that will put things in perspective.

It was the government of late Atal Behari Vajpayee which formed a separate Ministry of Tribal Affairs in the year 1999. It was the first step towards the vision to empower the tribal population in India who had suffered under the previous regimes which looked at them as a mere vote bank while the Left parties
exploited their poverty by making them plunge into violence and indulging in poverty porn.

The Left-wing extremists indulged in a propaganda that justice can be achieved for tribal community by only picking up the guns which ended up as a disaster for the nation. Continued neglect by Congress
party resulted in lack of development in North Eastern states and in states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh which has around 30% tribal population.

Ever since Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister the transformation of tribal areas began in right earnest. One of the pillars was the “Act East” policy which paid rich dividends in the empowerment of tribal areas.

North East saw unprecedented development. Roads were constructed at dramatic speed and trains entered into the remote corners of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh got its first airport. These development activities resulted in tribal welfare in north-east states which has a huge tribal population.

The development was not just limited to North Eastern states but specific targeted schemes were initiated which were to be delivered to tribal community.

Here is a list of some of the initiatives taken by the Modi Government for the welfare of the indigenous tribal communities.

1) 1.28 crores Tribal homes are now fitted with piped water Connections through Jal Jeevan Mission

2) 38 lakh houses have been constructed under PM Avas Yojana for tribal population

3) 1.45 lakh toilets have been built under Swachh Bharat scheme in tribal areas

4) 82 lakh health cards have been given to tribals under Ayushman Bharat Health scheme

5) Ekalavya Model Schools exclusively for tribals has seen budget enhanced to ₹1418 crores

6) Fund allocation for scholarships for tribal students has been hiked from ₹978 crores to ₹2546 crores

7) As part of the entrepreneurship development initiative, 3,110 Van Dhan Vikas Kendra Clusters and 53,000 Van Dhan self-help groups have been established with an expenditure of ₹327 crores

8) 30% of revenue from mining activities is being spent on tribal areas development with over ₹57,000 crores raised for this purpose

9) Tribe India Outlets run by Van Dhan SeVikas (TRIFED) which takes care of marketing and sales of products manufactured by Tribal people have increased from 29 to 116

10) The Modi Government is also constructing Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum with a budgetary outlay of ₹200 crores

11) The nation now celebrates the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, which falls on November 15, as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.

From economic development through entrepreneurship to education of tribal children to recognition of tribal population in nation building, Prime Minister Modi has taken every effort to empower the tribal
population of this country.

In the words of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, “For decades poverty and social insecurity have been the biggest challenge for our tribal communities. Left extremists exploited these to spread their wings in our tribal areas. This resulted in a total disruption of growth and development in some of these areas. But the Modi government’s zero-tolerance policy towards left-wing extremism has led to its near-complete elimination. Violence and unrest in our tribal areas have been replaced by development and peace.”

The words of Amit Shah can be attributed to the fact that the geographical influence of Maoists has reduced from 96 districts in 2010 to 41 districts in 2021. There has been an overall reduction in violent incidents from 1136 in 2013 to 665 in 2021 and 54% reduction in deaths in 2020 as compared to 397 deaths in 2013.

It is the development agenda of PM Modi which has empowered the lives of tribal population in India and we can see smiles in the faces of them as President Murmu becomes the supreme commander of the armed forces.

This is a shining example of PM Modi’s resolute commitment to the empowerment of our tribal brothers and sisters.

The rise of Murmu signals the arrival of a truly democratic, aspirational, inclusive and a strong India where even a teacher from a nondescript village can assume the highest offices in the country.

If opposition parties still think that PM Modi is indulging in tokenism politics then they are turning a Nelson Eye to the development agenda of PM Modi and are on a relentless pursuit towards abysmal of depression and political irrelevance.

A video in social media has gone viral where the Jharkhand police attacked class 10 and 12 class girl students who had gathered to protest before State Minister Banna Gupta over dissatisfaction with board results.

In the video, one can clearly see the police had ordered a lathi-charge to disperse the students after they expressed their displeasure over the board examination results declared by the Jharkhand Academic Council and demanded reconsideration over the results.

It has been alleged that the girls had entered the hall where Gupta was chairing a meeting to register their protest.

State Education Minister Jagarnath Mahto in an interview with the ANI said, “There’s a well-established procedure for reassessment. If any unsuccessful student wants to pass the exam, he/ she should approach the grievance cell.”

In the aftermath of this incident, the video was severely criticised on social media as it was clear that the police used disproportionate force on the young girls and BJP state president from Ranchi Deepak Prakash has now demanded strong action from the state government led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

“The oppressive government of Jharkhand wants to suppress the voice of the people, yesterday’s lathi charge on girl students in Dhanbad is a shameful act. The public will answer them soon,” said BJP in a series of tweets on the incident.

“The students are having tough times for two years now because of the pandemic. Instead of being compassionate, the government is letting its police take action against them. is shameful,” Prakash said.

When the police attacked the girls, it resulted in two girls fainting and as many as six of them sustained injuries.
