As recruitment under the Agnipath scheme continues, the Indian Army had issued a notification a few months ago inviting applications for the selection of soldiers.

Following the notification, an online written examination was conducted in June. Candidates who cleared the written test subsequently underwent physical efficiency and medical fitness tests in September.

After successfully qualifying in all three stages of the selection process, around 1,340 candidates from the southern districts have been selected for induction into the Indian Army under the Agnipath scheme. Of these, more than 300 candidates are from Tenkasi district alone, marking a significant contribution from the region.

The development has drawn widespread appreciation on social media, with netizens congratulating the youth of Tenkasi district for their enthusiasm and commitment to serve the nation through the armed forces.

In a daring late-night operation on September 4, the Indian Army Aviation carried out a high-altitude casualty evacuation mission to rescue two South Korean nationals stranded at Kongmaru La Pass in Ladakh. At 8:05 P.M., the Army received an urgent message requesting evacuation of Hyun Woo Kim, a citizen of South Korea, and his wife, stranded at Kongmaru La Pass in Ladakh at an altitude of over 17,000 feet.

The snow-laden terrain and razor-sharp ridgelines made the mission exceptionally challenging. With no time to lose, the Army Aviation helicopter squadron was mobilised by 8:20 P.M. The task required a precision landing using Night Vision Goggles (NVG) at an unprepared helipad — a feat demanding extraordinary skill and composure from the aircrew.

Braving icy winds, reduced visibility, and near-zero margin for error, the pilots guided their aircraft to the designated spot, touching down at around 9:15 P.M. The swift landing and extraction under such hostile conditions underscored the unmatched training and professionalism of the squadron.

The South Korean couple was quickly airlifted to safety and handed over to medical authorities for immediate treatment. This rescue mission reflects a textbook display of courage, coordination, and precision under extreme duress, highlighting the Army’s readiness to respond to emergencies, even in the harshest of environments.

The daring operation not only reaffirmed the Indian Army’s operational capabilities in high-altitude regions but also carried strong humanitarian undertones, showcasing India’s commitment to aiding foreign nationals in distress.

For the Army Aviation wing, the successful NVG rescue in Ladakh adds another feather to its illustrious record of high-risk missions in some of the world’s most unforgiving terrains. It is worthy to note here that although the Indian Army’s primary role is to safeguard the borders and to give a befitting reply to the nation’s enemies in any critical or warlike situation but the Indian Army is among the first to help stranded citizens in any such situation, irrespective of their nationality.

Notably, at a time when the northern part of India including Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir is witnessing floods which have created havoc, the Indian Army is standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the other concerned agencies and is providing critical humanitarian assistance, from delivering food via helicopters and drones, evacuating people and giving them medical assistance.

The Supreme Court on 8 August, pulled up Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks insulting the Indian Army. During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi had allegedly said, “Chinese troops are thrashing Indian Army soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh,” referring to the 9 December 2022, face-off in the Tawang sector.

A Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Joymalya Bagchi expressed disapproval of Rahul Gandhi’s claim that 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory had been occupied by China, adding that “if he were a true Indian, he would not have said all this.” “How do you know that 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory were occupied by the Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material? If you were a true Indian, you would not say all this. When there is a conflict across the order, is it unusual to have casualties on both sides?” the Justice Datta-led Bench asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Rahul Gandhi.

“Whatever you have to say, why don’t you say it in the Parliament? Why do you have to say this in social media posts?” further asked the apex court. The remarks came after Singhvi argued that it would be an “unfortunate situation” if an opposition leader cannot be allowed to raise issues of national concern in the press.

The apex court agreed to examine Rahul Gandhi’s plea, which raises the issue of mandatory notice to the proposed accused at the pre-cognisance stage, and sought responses from the Uttar Pradesh government and the complainant in the matter. Further, the Justice Datta-led Bench granted interim relief to Rahul Gandhi against the summoning order issued by the Lucknow court.

The complainant, Udai Shankar Srivastava, a retired Director from the Border Roads Organisation, alleged that Gandhi’s statements were “false and baseless”, intended to “demoralise the Indian Army” and damage national morale. Earlier in May, the Allahabad High Court had dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s plea to quash the criminal defamation case, rejecting the argument that the complainant lacked the legal standing to file the case, as he was not directly named.

A single-judge Bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi ruled that even a third party can be considered an “aggrieved person” if they are harmed by defamatory remarks. It said, “The trial Court has rightly arrived at the decision to summon the applicant (Gandhi) to face trial for the offence under Section 500 I.P.C. after taking into consideration all the relevant facts and circumstances of the case”. Declining to exercise its inherent powers, the Allahabad High Court observed that the trial court’s summoning order dated 11 February 2025, “did not suffer from any illegality” and refused to interfere with it. Following this, Gandhi appeared before the MP-MLA court in Lucknow and secured bail on the condition of furnishing his personal bond of ₹20,000 with two sureties of the like amount.

At the same time, he also approached the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court’s order refusing to quash the defamation case against him. The trial court had earlier issued multiple summonses to Rahul Gandhi in the case, but he failed to appear.

In light of Congress MP Chidambaram’s statement giving a clean chit to Pakistan for the Pahalgam terror attack, the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps announced the launch of Operation Mahadev in General Area Lidwas, Kashmir. They wrote, OP MAHADEV Contact established in General Area Lidwas. Operation in progress.”

An hour or so later, the update stated, “OP MAHADEV – Update Three terrorist have been neutralised in an intense firefight. Operation Continues.”

OSINT handles indicated that the 3 Pakistani terrorists suspected to be involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack were killed in the encounter in Srinagar’s Dachigam area during a joint operation carried out by the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police under Operation Mahadev.

The latest post from the OSINT handle shows the dead terrorists.

Operation Mahadev

Security forces recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from the militants’ hideout, including 17 grenades, one M4 carbine, and two AK-47 rifles.

A senior official told India Today there was a strong possibility that the slain terrorists were connected to the deadly attack in the Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam, in which several security personnel were targeted. The identities of the militants are being confirmed, and their possible role in the Pahalgam incident will be ascertained following forensic and intelligence verification.

The operation was launched after the Army intercepted suspicious communication in early July in the Dachigam forest area. Intelligence inputs indicated the presence of a joint group of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed operatives, who were subsequently tracked for nearly two weeks with assistance from local nomadic communities.

On Monday at around 11:30 AM, a team comprising 24 Rashtriya Rifles and 4 PARA engaged the terrorists near Mount Mahadev, successfully neutralising all three. The operation name “Mahadev” was reportedly chosen due to the encounter’s location between the Zabarwan and Mahadev ridgelines. Last month, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is leading the probe into the Pahalgam attack, arrested two local residents, Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad, for allegedly providing shelter to the attackers. OSINT handles identify that the terrorists as Abu Hamza (a) Harris, Yasir and Suleiman.

The Indian Army has not yet officially confirmed (at the time of publishing this article) if these terrorists killed are indeed the much-wanted Pahalgam terror attack perpetrators.

If they are, the centre and the Army stand vindicated for their actions following the terror attack, namely Operation Sindoor and negate the clean chits given by the likes of Chidambaram.

What Did Chidambaram Say?

He asked, “Why do you assume that the attackers came from Pakistan?” – a question that conveniently aligns with Pakistan’s standard propaganda playbook. His remarks have sparked a massive backlash, with the BJP accusing him of providing rhetorical cover to India’s enemies and trivializing the cross-border nature of jihadist terror.

Have they (NIA) identified the terrorists or where they came from? For all we know, they could be homegrown terrorists. Why do you assume they came from Pakistan? There is no evidence of that.”, he said in an interview to Congress-supporting leftist portal The Quint.

Pahalgam Terror Attack

The killing of three Pakistani terrorists in Srinagar has brought renewed attention to the April 22 Pahalgam massacre, one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Kashmir in recent years. The development comes as Parliament prepares to discuss the attack and Operation Sindoor, India’s ongoing military and intelligence response.

The opposition has repeatedly criticised the government over its failure to swiftly identify and apprehend those responsible for the carnage.

The brutal assault took place in the Baisaran Valley area of Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination often referred to as “mini Switzerland”. The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, had claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to eyewitness accounts and initial investigations, the terrorists targeted male picnickers and specifically executed those identified as non-Muslims, making it a targeted communal attack.

Sources had earlier named Suleiman Shah, a known Lashkar operative, as a possible key figure in the assault. Shah is also suspected of being involved in the killing of seven workers linked to the Z-Morh tunnel construction project along the Srinagar-Sonmarg highway in 2023.

Twenty-six years ago, a bold infiltration in the Kargil region jolted the nation, as armed intruders crossed the border and occupied key high-altitude positions on India’s side of the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Initially believed to be militants, the infiltrators were later confirmed to be part of a carefully planned covert military offensive—Operation Badr—conducted by the Pakistan Army.

The objective was to secure a strategic advantage in the Kashmir region, sever India’s vital link to Siachen by cutting off Indian troops, compel their withdrawal, and ultimately facilitate the occupation of all of Kashmir.

This incursion came just months after India and Pakistan had signed the historic Lahore Declaration, a bilateral agreement aimed at reducing tensions and resolving disputes through peaceful means and mutual respect for territorial sovereignty.

The summer of 1999 thus marked Pakistan’s breach of this landmark accord and India’s decisive countermeasure through the launch of Operation Vijay. The Kargil War of 1999 marked the first conventional conflict between two nuclear-armed states.

What distinguishes this war is its conduct at extreme altitudes, spanning a 170-kilometre stretch of the Himalayan frontier, where Indian troops contended not only with hostile forces but also with harsh environmental conditions.

Operating in low-oxygen environments, Indian soldiers ascended steep, icy cliffs—ranging between 8,000 and 18,000 feet—under relentless enemy fire to dislodge opposing forces and reclaim Indian territory.

This conflict was, therefore, not merely a battle against a hostile adversary, well-entrenched in fortified bunkers with weapons poised, but also a confrontation with the unforgiving forces of nature.

Despite the tactical advantage held by the enemy, Indian soldiers exhibited extraordinary perseverance, selflessness, and determination, rendering this military triumph, one of the most revered in the nation’s history.

Victory in war is not solely determined by advanced weaponry, and the Kargil conflict serves as a definitive example. Indian troops, in fact, were not equipped with adequate mountaineering gear necessary for scaling the steep, frozen inclines.

Despite these material shortcomings, they demonstrated the capacity to improvise, adapt, and overcome the obstacles before them, owing to their rigorous training in high-altitude warfare.

Yet, the decisive factor in securing this victory was the spirit of camaraderie, which uplifted morale and inspired Indian soldiers to confront the entrenched enemy positions.

This hard-won triumph still resonates through the words “Yeh Dil Maange More,” radioed by Captain Vikram Batra of the 13 J&K Rifles following the re-capture of Point 5140, the highest peak of Tololing.

Captain Batra and his men then advanced to reclaim Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley, significantly shifting the momentum in India’s favour. It was here that the young officer laid down his life while attempting to save a fellow soldier from enemy fire.

Beyond strategic prowess, Captain Batra embodied exceptional courage and leadership at merely 24 years of age, for which he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the nation’s highest military honour.

Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav of the Ghatak platoon was merely 19 years old when he sustained at least 15 gunshot wounds from enemy fire while ascending the cliff face during the assault on Tiger Hill.

Despite his severe injuries, Yadav continued to advance as the unit’s sole survivor, ultimately destroying enemy bunkers with grenades and engaging in close-quarter combat to eliminate opposing soldiers, thereby clearing the path for his platoon to reclaim the strategic heights.

As the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, Yogendra Singh Yadav recounts his extraordinary feat of courage with profound humility. Others, such as Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari (18 Grenadiers), Major Vivek Gupta (2 Rajputana Rifles), and Naik Digendra Kumar (2 Rajputana Rifles), led their men along the Tololing Ridge, targeting enemy bunkers, eliminating adversaries, and facilitating troop advancement—often at the cost of their own lives.

These narratives, among many others, depict valiant soldiers shielding comrades from constant enemy assault, neutralising enemy positions before succumbing to fatal injuries, and enabling the Indian Army to reclaim national territory.

Their collective sacrifice and indomitable spirit define the unmatched heroism of Operation Vijay. The morale of the Indian Army received widespread public acclaim alongside robust institutional backing, standing in marked contrast to the approach adopted by its adversary.

Pakistan’s Operation Badr was reportedly conceived in secrecy by a select group of senior military generals, excluding the Nawaz Sharif-led civilian government from the planning process.

This not only compromised Pakistan’s democratic framework but also laid bare the entrenched influence of the country’s deep state. The covert nature of the operation and subsequent diplomatic isolation led to severe embarrassment for Pakistan’s civilian leadership, which initially denied the involvement of regular Pakistani troops in Kargil, portraying the infiltrators as ‘mujahideen’.

Even after confirmation of identities of deceased Pakistani soldiers, the government refused to claim their bodies, keeping their families uninformed.

It was Indian soldiers who performed the burials of many Pakistani troops with full military honours, accompanied by Muslim clerics conducting rites in accordance with Islamic customs. Notably, the body of Pakistani Captain Karnal Sher Khan was returned with a letter from Indian Brigadier M.P.S. Bajwa, commending Sher Khan’s courage and urging Pakistan to bestow military recognition.

Although belated, Captain Sher Khan was posthumously awarded Pakistan’s highest military decoration—the Nishan-e-Haider. Twenty-five years later, the Pakistan Army formally acknowledged its involvement in the Kargil conflict, with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif publicly conceding the strategic misjudgment.

The Indian Army’s hoisting of the Tricolour atop Tiger Hill on July 4, 1999—overlooking National Highway 1D, the vital lifeline of Ladakh—following its recapture from Pakistani forces, endures as a powerful emblem of national sovereignty, safeguarded by the unwavering dedication of Indian soldiers.

It continues to stand as a profound symbol of territorial integrity, preserved through the courage and sacrifice of Indian troops. As the nation commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, it is a moment to honour those who laid down their lives in defence of every inch of our homeland, as well as those who continue to uphold the national flag with unwavering pride.

Dravidianist YouTuber and editor-in-chief of RedPix, Felix Gerald, has come under fire for making controversial remarks about the Indian Army during a recent discussion on his channel. Known for frequently hosting content critical of Indian sentiments and nationalism, Gerald has now drawn backlash for calling the Indian military a “dummy piece” in comparison to China, provoking strong reactions from netizens.

In his latest video, Felix Gerald was joined by Arulmozhi Varman, another known Dravidianist sympathizer, to discuss the recent Pahalgam terror attacks, which specifically targeted Hindus. As the two analyzed the central government’s possible responses and the broader geopolitical landscape, the conversation took a turn that many viewers found disrespectful toward India’s defense forces.

What Did Felix Gerald Say?

During the discussion, Arulmozhi Varman asked, “As you were saying, where is the support for India in this geopolitical situation? You say the US is neutral, China also takes Pro-Pakistan stance, Sri Lanka is useless, and Bangladesh is ineffective.” Gerald responded, “You should also consider the strength of the Indian Army, right.” Arulmozhi pressed further, “I’m asking what happens if China and Pakistan join forces?”

Gerald replied, “Whether China will get directly involved is the bigger question.” Arulmozhi followed up, “So you’re saying China won’t participate directly?” Gerald answered, “No, they won’t get directly involved. They may provide weapons.” Arulmozhi then asked, “Won’t that support be enough?” Felix Gerald concluded, “It may weaken India economically, but that alone won’t give Pakistan a win. Yes, the Indian Army is larger and stronger, but when compared to China, we’re just a ‘dummy piece’. Against Pakistan, we are stronger.”

These comments were perceived as belittling the Indian armed forces, especially in the context of a discussion on national security following a terror attack. The backlash on social media has been swift, with many accusing Gerald of undermining national morale and promoting anti-India rhetoric under the guise of political critique.

The irony lies in the fact that while China has long portrayed itself as a dominant military power, it has consistently avoided participating in any full-scale war playing as a scarecrow in Taiwan issue. Unlike India, which has proven its defense capabilities through actual combat experience and active involvement in bilateral and multilateral military exercises, China’s might remains largely theoretical and untested. Meanwhile, India has steadily strengthened its defense infrastructure and continues to build its military and strategic readiness with consistent effort.

Yet, these YouTubers persist in spreading narratives that undermine India’s strength, often favoring China while ignoring India’s actual capabilities and its growing influence through soft power. These self-styled analysts frequently mention China, Pakistan, the U.S., Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh but rarely acknowledge India’s true and time-tested allies like Israel, Russia, and France—nations that have stood firmly with India, even during its toughest conflicts. Instead of pushing clickbait content that questions the nation’s competence for the sake of views, perhaps they should focus on responsible journalism that reflects facts and fosters national awareness.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought Diwali cheer to the frontlines by celebrating with soldiers at Lakki Nala in Gujarat’s Sir Creek, lauding their steel-like dedication to guarding India’s toughest terrains. Extending the gratitude of 140 crore Indians, he honoured the resilience of men standing watched over this strategic border and highlighted India’s Defence strides, from Indigenous jets and submarines to groundbreaking drone advancements. PM Modi celebrates the festival every year with the armed forces.

Extending his warm wishes, PM Modi lauded the commitment and dedication of soldiers stationed at this challenging border area. Greeting the soldiers with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” PM Modi began by extending Diwali greetings to them. “On this sacred land near Sir Creek, it is my privilege to celebrate Diwali with you. When I celebrate with you, the joy of Diwali multiplies. This Diwali is special as Lord Ram has finally returned to his temple in Ayodhya,” he said, noting the symbolism of this year’s festival. PM Modi also expressed his gratitude on behalf of India’s 140 crore citizens, recognising the courage of the soldiers defending the nation in extreme conditions. “You serve in regions where temperatures drop below zero in the mountains and where searing heat and desert storms test your resilience. Your dedication shines like steel, intimidating any enemy who attempts to challenge us,” he said.

Lauding the Indian Navy’s role in securing Gujarat’s coast and countering anti-India conspiracies, PM Modi highlighted the strategic importance of Kutch, particularly during the 1971 War. “This region has always been a target, yet India’s forces have guarded it firmly. Today, with our Navy here, no adversary dares cast an eye on Sir Creek,” he said. The Prime Minister assured that India’s borders were non-negotiable and recalled the past challenges of diplomatic efforts to take over Sir Creek, which he had opposed as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. “Our policies reflect the resolve of our armed forces, not the words of our enemies,” he stressed. PM Modi highlighted India’s strides in modernising its Defence sector by emphasising on building an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

Citing the inauguration of the C295 factory in Vadodara, he noted that India is now building indigenous submarines, aircraft carriers like Vikrant, and fighter jets such as Tejas. “We are moving towards a self-reliant Defence sector. Our Defence exports have increased thirty-fold over the past decade,” he said, commending the armed forces for creating a list of over 5,000 Defence items that will no longer be imported. The Prime Minister also addressed the importance of drone technology as modern warfare evolves, stating, “Drone technology is now a vital tool for surveillance, Intelligence, and combat. India is advancing in this field, with predator drones being acquired and local startups manufacturing indigenous drones.” He underscored the ongoing integration of India’s three armed forces under the Chief of Defence Staff, with efforts directed at establishing an Integrated Theater Command.

“I often say that there is one Army, one Air Force, and one Navy. However, when they conduct joint exercises, we see them as 111,” he remarked. Highlighting India’s infrastructure improvements, PM Modi said that more than 80,000 kms of border roads have been built over the past ten years, along with strategic tunnels, such as the Atal Tunnel, to ensure connectivity in remote areas. The Prime Minister spoke of the Vibrant Villages scheme, aiming to develop hamlets along India’s borders.

“We have redefined these areas not as the last but as the ‘first villages’ of our nation. Our vision is to turn these into vibrant tourist zones, just like the Rann Utsav in Dhordo,” he said, sharing plans to establish mangrove forests and economic zones in the region. PM Modi concluded by sharing sweets with the personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF), Army, Navy, and Air Force, bringing Diwali cheer to the remote and strategic area of Lakki Nala near Sir Creek, which has historically been a challenging border post under BSF vigilance.

We seem to have lost touch with figures like Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar and his devoted followers, who once rallied behind Subhash Chandra Bose in the struggle for India’s independence. The pride Tamil families once felt when declaring their sons’ service in the “Pataalam” (Armed Forces) — expressed with a beaming smile and a proud twirl of the moustache — has faded from the public consciousness. Yet, the spirit of sacrifice endures; Tamil Nadu continues to send its brave souls to defend our nation at the most challenging borders, standing resolute against formidable enemies. However, the fervor and charm that once defined this pride have become muted in our collective memory.

Despite the prevailing Dravidianist narrative that often promotes a separatist or anti-India sentiment in Tamil Nadu, the state’s deep-rooted tradition of military service stands strong, with Tamil families proudly sending their sons and daughters to serve in the Indian Armed Forces. Throughout history, Tamil soldiers have demonstrated extraordinary valor and unwavering dedication, earning the highest military honors, including the prestigious Ashok Chakra and Param Vir Chakra. These awards symbolize not only the courage and sacrifice of individuals but also the profound patriotism that continues to resonate within Tamil society. The legacy of these Tamil heroes is a testament to the enduring spirit of unity and loyalty to India, shining brightly despite contrasting political narratives.

Param Vir Chakra Recipients

The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is India’s highest military honor awarded for exceptional bravery in the face of enemy action. Established on 26 January 1950, it is awarded to personnel of the Indian Armed Forces and recognizes acts of valor that go beyond the call of duty. The medal features a circular silver design with a depiction of the Ashoka Lion and is inscribed with the words “Param Vir Chakra.” Recipients are celebrated for their courage, leadership, and commitment to their country, often making the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Among the 21 recipients of the Param Vir Chakra, Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran stands out as a remarkable figure from Tamil Nadu. On January 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi named 21 of the largest unnamed islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in honor of these Param Vir Chakra awardees, on the occasion of with Parakram Diwas, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran – Param Vir Chakra

Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran was born on 13 September 1946, in Bombay, Maharashtra. The son of Mr. K S Ramaswamy and Mrs. Janaki, he completed his education at SIES (South Indian Education Society) High School, Mumbai in 1963. He then graduated in science from SIES college in 1968. Subsequently, he enrolled in the OTA in Chennai and graduated on 16 June 1972. He was commissioned into the 15 Mahar of the renowned Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army and served there for eight years.

In 1981, Maj Parameswaran married Uma, a poet and writer, marking the beginning of his joyful married life. He was later reassigned to the 5 Mahar battalion in 1983. During his tenure with both the 15 Mahar and 5 Mahar battalions, Maj Parameswaran participated in numerous counter-insurgency operations in the North East region, quickly establishing a reputation for his resolute determination and unwavering leadership. Endearingly known as “Parry Sahib” by his troops, he was always at the front during the difficult missions taken on by his unit. When Op Pawan commenced, Maj Parameswaran was selected to serve with the 8 Mahar battalion, one of the initial units deployed in Sri Lanka in 1987.

Operation Pawan – 25 Nov 1987

Maj Parameswaran’s unit was part of the 54 Infantry Division assigned to oversee the execution of the Indo-Sri Lanka accord signed on 29 July 1987. Following the arrival of Indian forces in August 1987, the militants were expected to surrender; however, the notorious LTTE reneged and launched an assault against Indian forces. Late on the night of 25 Nov 1987, Maj Parameswaran was ordered to lead a group of soldiers on a reconnaissance mission in Kantharodai near Uduvil in Jaffna, the LTTE’s stronghold. As they proceeded to locate a cache of weapons hidden by the LTTE militants, they were ambushed by a group of heavily armed LTTE fighters. Maj Parameswaran and his team of approximately 30 soldiers inadvertently entered the militants’ hideout and came under heavy fire from all angles.

The militants were armed with AK-47s, grenades, explosives, and devastating HMGs (Heavy Machine Guns) that caused significant damage. The LTTE fighters had also mined the area, complicating the soldiers’ movements and placing them at a severe disadvantage. Maj Parameswaran swiftly evaluated the seriousness of the situation and resolved to initiate a counter-ambush to protect his troops. Taking 10 of his men, he advanced to put his strategy into action. Amid constant fire from HMGs, Maj Parameswaran fought valiantly and continued to encircle the militants. With disregard for his own safety, he dropped to his stomach and crawled forward through the coconut grove toward the ambush site.

Maj Parameswaran surprised the militants when they realized they were surrounded. However, a burst from an HMG fired by a sniper positioned in a coconut tree struck him on his left wrist, nearly severing his hand. Undaunted, he charged at the nearest militant, seizing his weapon and shooting him down. Just then, another HMG burst hit him in the chest. In his pocket, he had a Mini Clear pistol and ammunition intended for sending a success signal. The rounds detonated upon impact from the HMG and Maj Parameswaran fell to the ground, becoming a martyr. Though his soldiers were devastated by the loss of their determined commander, they drew inspiration from his bravery and successfully repelled the militants.

Maj Ramaswamy Parameswaran was awarded the nation’s highest honor for bravery, the “Param Vir Chakra,” in recognition of his extraordinary courage, unyielding fighting spirit, and ultimate sacrifice. He became the sole recipient of the PVC award from the IPKF operation in Sri Lanka and the first from OTA Chennai to receive this prestigious recognition.

Ashoka Chakra Recipients

The Ashoka Chakra is India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, recognizing acts of valor and self-sacrifice by military personnel. Instituted on 4th July 1952, it is awarded for courageous actions performed during peacekeeping operations and in the face of enemy attacks. The medal features a representation of the Ashoka Lion, symbolizing courage and honor. Recipients of the Ashoka Chakra are celebrated for their extraordinary bravery, commitment to duty, and contributions to the nation, often serving as inspirations for future generations.

Second Lieutenant P.M Raman – Ashoka Chakra

2nd Lt Pollur Mutthuswamy Raman was born on 4th December 1934 in the northern Arcot district of Tamil Nadu. The child of an Army officer, Maj Mutthuswamy from the Army Medical Corps and Savitri, 2nd Lt Raman was the second of seven siblings. 2nd Lt Raman received his early education in Burma and later attended Saraswati High School and Wadia College in Pune. He was a bright and gentle individual, well-liked by both teachers and peers alike.

In 1950, 2nd Lt Raman completed his SSC examination and, while in his first year of college, was selected for the National Defence Academy. He was commissioned into the Army as a 2nd Lt in 1955 at the age of 21. He joined the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment, a unit renowned for its brave soldiers and numerous battle honors. For his initial assignment, 2nd Lt Raman was posted to NEFA (North East Frontier Agency), now known as Arunachal Pradesh.

Nagaland Operation – 03 June 1956

On 02 June 1956, 2nd Lt Raman’s unit obtained intelligence regarding the presence of Naga militants in Chephema village, Nagaland. After evaluating the circumstances, it was decided to initiate an operation to apprehend the militants as soon as possible. Consequently, an assault team led by 2nd Lt Raman sprang into action in the early morning of 03 June 1956 as planned. 2nd Lt Raman and his soldiers arrived at the suspected area around 5 am. Soon, the troops identified the militants, who opened fire upon being challenged.

The militants were heavily armed, utilizing light machine guns, sten guns, and rifles. Due to the fog and darkness, identifying the militants’ positions was quite challenging. However, 2nd Lt Raman suddenly noticed movement in a nearby hut and rushed towards it. In a swift and brave maneuver, he fired and killed two militants. Meanwhile, one of the militants hurled a hand grenade at him, which fortunately did not injure him as he managed to escape just in time.

2nd Lt Raman continued to fire, taking down one more militant before he found himself encircled by militants on all sides. One of the militants threw another grenade that detonated a yard away, damaging his hat and wounding him. Undeterred, he persevered in his attack, instilling panic among the militants. Sensing imminent defeat, some of the militants began to flee, but 2nd Lt Raman pursued them and eliminated another militant. However, one of the militants emerged from hiding and shot at him, inflicting severe injuries. Even this did not stop him; he retaliated by throwing a grenade at another militant, killing him. He continued to issue orders and direct fire until he eventually fell unconscious. 2nd Lt Raman later succumbed to his wounds and was martyred before reaching the age of 22. His daring actions inspired his troops, leading them to ultimately destroy the militants’ hideout and accomplish their mission successfully.

2nd Lt P M Raman was posthumously awarded the nation’s highest peacetime gallantry honor, the “Ashok Chakra,” in recognition of his remarkable bravery, unwavering leadership, and ultimate sacrifice.

Major Dinesh Raghu Raman – Ashoka Chakra

Major Dinesh Raghu Raman was born in Kancheepuram district to SK Murthy and  Mala Murthy on 6th April 1978. He completed his primary education at Kendriya Vidyalaya, INA Colony, New Delhi. Subsequently, he enrolled in the esteemed National Defence Academy in 1996 and was commissioned into the 19th Battalion of the Jat Regiment, a unit renowned for its valiant soldiers and numerous battle accolades. Despite a brief career, he held various positions and earned high regard from his superiors for his commitment and leadership abilities. He was also honored with the Chief of Army Staff Commendation medal for his contributions to Operation Parakram in the Drass sector.

Baramulla Operation – 02 Oct 2007

Following several years of service with his unit, Maj Raman was later assigned to the 34 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion in the J & K region in 2006. In June 2007, he executed a highly successful operation “Op Narawar,” resulting in the elimination of three hardline terrorists in his operational area. On 02 October 2007, Maj Raman was tasked with initiating an operation in a village in Baramulla to root out the terrorists hiding there. At 0820 hours that day, Maj Raman deployed his company to secure the suspected area. Around 0855 hours, while approaching the suspected structures, Major Raman heard cries for help from a fellow officer who had sustained serious injuries during the ongoing firefight.

Maj Raman quickly assessed the situation and advanced towards his injured comrade. Demonstrating remarkable camaraderie and esprit-de-corps, he crawled toward the wounded officer under intense enemy fire. He successfully evacuated him and two other injured soldiers to a safer location. Maj Raman then targeted the two terrorists responsible for significant troop casualties and engaged them in a fierce close-quarter combat, ultimately killing both. However, additional terrorists concealed in a nearby house opened fire on Major Raman, creating another front in the gunfight. During the subsequent exchange, Maj Raman was seriously injured. Undaunted, he continued to lead and inspire his troops, keeping the terrorists pinned down until he lost consciousness. He was airlifted to the military hospital in Srinagar, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Maj Raman was a devoted soldier and an exemplary officer who sacrificed his life in the service of his country.

Major Dinesh Raghu Raman was posthumously awarded the nation’s highest peacetime gallantry honor, the “Ashok Chakra,” in recognition of his extraordinary bravery, camaraderie, fighting spirit, and ultimate sacrifice.

Colonel D. Sreeram Kumar – Ashoka Chakra

Colonel D. Sreeram Kumar, born on 11 January 1981, is a serving officer in the Indian Army, recognized for his valor with the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, in 2010. Hailing from Kovilpatti, he completed his schooling at Sainik School in Amaravathinagar, graduating in 1998, and later pursued his undergraduate studies at The American College in Madurai.

Sreeram Kumar joined the Officers Training Academy in Chennai in October 2002 and was commissioned into the 90 Medium Regiment (Artillery) on 20 March 2004, as a lieutenant. He transitioned to a regular commission on 20 March 2009, with seniority dating back to 20 October 2004. He was promoted to captain on 20 October 2006, and later served as an acting major beginning 24 August 2008, with 39 Assam Rifles during Operation Orchid in Arunachal Pradesh and Operation Hifazat in Manipur.

On 23 October 2008, Major Sreeram Kumar launched an operation against a group of 10–15 armed terrorists in Heingang Heibi Makhong, Imphal East District, based on credible intelligence. During the encounter, he and his team faced heavy automatic fire from the terrorists. Displaying remarkable courage, he engaged the attackers, killing two of them. He then directed his team to provide covering fire and, showing extraordinary bravery, crawled closer to eliminate the remaining terrorists at point-blank range. For his exceptional leadership and gallantry, he was awarded the Ashoka Chakra on 15 August 2009.

Following this recognition, Kumar continued his career as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy (IMA). He received a substantive promotion to major on 20 October 2010, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on 20 October 2017. Most recently, he was elevated to the rank of colonel by selection on 31 January 2021, with seniority effective from 26 October 2019.

Major Mukund Varadarajan – Ashoka Chakra

Major Mukund Varadarajan was born on 12 April 1983 in the Kozhikode district of Kerala. Son of R Varadarajan and Geetha, he spent his childhood in Tamil Nadu and had two sisters, Swetha and Nithya. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya in Enathur, Tamil Nadu, and a diploma in journalism from Madras Christian College in Tambaram. His grandfather and two uncles had also served in the army, which inspired Maj Mukund to pursue a military career. He was selected to join the Army by passing the Combined Defence Services Examination in 2005 and attended the esteemed OTA (Officers Training Academy) in Chennai.

In 2006, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 22 Rajput Battalion of the Rajput Regiment, an infantry unit renowned for its fearless soldiers and numerous battle achievements. After nearly three years of service, he married his long-time friend Ms Indhu Rebecca Varghese on 28 August 2009, and the couple welcomed a daughter, Ashreya, born on 17 March 2011. His service included a tenure at the Infantry School in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, as well as participation in the United Nations Mission in Lebanon. In December 2012, he was assigned to the 44 RR Battalion, deployed in J&K for counter-insurgency operations.

Qazipathri Operation (J&K) – 25 Apr 2014

In 2014, Maj Mukund’s unit, 44 RR, was stationed in the Shopian district of J&K and frequently engaged in counterinsurgency operations. The battalion, led by Col Amit Singh Dabas, operated from its headquarters at Zawora Manlo near the apple town of Shopian. After joining his unit, Maj Mukund took part in multiple counter-insurgency and counter-infiltration operations, demonstrating his capabilities on several occasions. On 25 April 2014, intelligence reports indicated the presence of dangerous terrorists, including Jaish-e-Mohammed commander Altaf Wani, in Qazipathri village in Shopian district. An operation was planned to eliminate the terrorists under Maj Mukund Varadarajan’s command. As planned, Maj Mukund acted swiftly with his troops and reached the suspected area within 30 minutes. The intelligence suggested these terrorists had also been involved in the recent killing of election officials.

At approximately 1500 hours, Maj Mukund divided his Quick Reaction Team (QRT) into six buddy pairs and established a cordon around the suspected two-story home in Qazipathri village. The house featured a large compound, an orchard, and two outbuildings. The soldiers quickly encountered the heavily armed terrorists, who opened fire on the assault team when challenged. The gunfire persisted for an hour without progress, as the terrorists were concealed and firing from advantageous positions. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Maj Mukund understood that a different tactical approach was necessary for a breakthrough. Alongside his comrade, Sep Vikram Singh, and under fire from their team, he crawled to the entrance of the house. Maj Mukund swiftly deployed an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) to blow up the entrance and charged inside with Sep Vikram Singh. In a rapid maneuver, Maj Mukund shot and eliminated one terrorist while simultaneously directing his troops’ fire.

The remaining two terrorists tossed grenades and, using the cover of the debris, escaped towards a cement outhouse. Maj Mukund and Sep Vikram Singh pursued them, throwing a grenade into the outhouse. The explosion killed one terrorist, but Jaish-e-Mohammed commander Altaf Wani survived and shot at Sep Vikram Singh, who was critically injured by two bullets to the neck and jaw. Tragically, he succumbed to his wounds and was martyred. Without hesitation for his safety, Maj Mukund charged forward, unleashing gunfire on Altaf Wani, killing him instantly. However, during the intense gunfight, Maj Mukund also sustained three gunshot wounds and soon collapsed. He was immediately taken to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar, but tragically lost his life en route, passing away in the arms of the regimental medical officer. Maj Mukund Varadarajan was a dedicated soldier and brave officer, who sacrificed his life at the age of 31 in the line of duty. In recognition of his extraordinary valor and ultimate sacrifice, Maj Mukund was awarded the nation’s highest peacetime gallantry honor, the “Ashok Chakra.” He became the fourth recipient of the “Ashok Chakra” from the state of Tamil Nadu, following Second Lieutenant P.M Raman of Tiruvannamalai district (1957, posthumously), Major Dinesh Raghu Raman of Kancheepuram district (2008, posthumously), and Major D Sreeram Kumar of Madurai district (2010).

As cinephiles in Tamil Nadu gear up for Deepavali with the release of Amaran, a biopic on Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mukund Varadarajan, many question the involvement of actor Sai Pallavi who is known for equating Indian Army actions to terrorism, describing Naxalism as a legitimate “ideology,” and comparing the Kashmiri Pandit genocide to stray cow-smuggling incidents. Many argue that her role in a film honouring a national hero is at odds with her past remarks, questioning the choice of casting her in a patriotic narrative.

Questionable ‘Amaran’ Team

The film Amaran, a biopic on Major Mukund Varadarajan, is up for release on Deepavali Day, 31 October 2024. Ever since the trailer was released, netizens and fans have been analysing it because questionable names are associated with the film.

Who are these questionable people, you ask? The film is being produced by Raj Kamal Films, owned by Kamal Haasan, a full-time actor, part-time politician, DMK ally, and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder. The Kollywood film is distributed by Red Giant Movies, owned by the DMK first family.

Additionally, the film features actor Sai Pallavi, who rose to fame with her pimple-faced girl-next-door look in Premam.

At such a juncture, some old videos of Sai Pallavi exposing her wokeness and ignorance started making the rounds on the internet.

Here are snippets from a Telugu interview she had given a few years ago. These are some of the statements she makes in the videos.

Naxalism Is An Ideology

In what seems to be a video interview around the time her film Virata Parvam was released (2022) when asked by the interviewer how she felt about the naxal uniform and guns and if she had any sympathy towards them, she says, “It is an ideology. You might have an ideology but for me, violence is a wrong form of communication. I don’t think now that we can solve this only if we are violent. But at that time, they did not know how to express their problem to them. When there is a law, we have to see what is right and what is wrong. At that time, no one knows where to go. So, they formed a group for themselves, and their mindset is that they will only say what is right and what is wrong. We are not in that situation; it happened long back.”

Does Sai Pallavi realise that naxalism is still active in several parts of the country (yes, it has been cracked down by the Modi government)? Does she realise how it affected families in states like Chhattisgarh? Does she realise how far back the Naxal-affected states and communities were when they were thriving?

It looks like she has no clue of what Naxalism is, what the Naxalites have been doing – absolutely no clue. Her statement that ‘they didn’t know how to express their problem’ about Naxals is plain ridiculous. Perhaps she should spend time with families of security personnel killed by these ‘ideologues’ before spouting such nonsense.

Indian Army Is A Terrorist For Pakistanis

In the same video, she is seen saying, “People in Pakistan think that our army is a terrorist. Because they feel that they are there and they (the army) are harming them. For us, they are terrorists. So the perspective changes. I don’t understand violence. It is very difficult for me to understand it. It is very difficult for us to say what is right and what is wrong. At that time, they believed that justice will come only if we do this. Only if we do this, we can do good to our children and family.”

Can Sai Pallavi provide proof that the Indian Army crossed the border and killed civilians? Are Indians occupying Pakistani land? Maybe Sai Pallavi needs several history lessons – Pakistan refused to accept the mortal remains of its soldiers during the Kargil war. It was India and its army that gave them a decent burial.

Not only does Sai Pallavi expose her shocking ignorance, but her comments about the Indian Army are borderline seditious. How dare she equate our brave soldiers with terrorists while enjoying the freedom and security they provide?

Equating Kashmiri Pandit Genocide To Cow Smuggling

In the same interview, she is seen saying, “A few days ago Kashmir Files film was released. In the film, they showed how the Pandits were killed at that time. Coming to more recent times, during COVID, if you are taking a religious conflict comparison, recently, someone was taking a cow in a vehicle. The ones driving the vehicle were Muslims. Some people lynched them and made them say, Jai Shri Ram. I cannot find the difference between what happened then and now. So if you ask me if leftists or rightists are good, they are not good if there is no justice on either side. When you are a good human being, whichever side you are on, everything becomes neutral.”

It cannot get worse than this – how can a sane person even compare genocide with beating up a cow smuggler? Trivializing a mass murder must be made a crime. Does she even know who Kashmiri Pandits are, does she know what they went through – should Sai Pallavi be made to relive the horrors of Raliv, Galiv, Ya Chaliv for her to understand and empathise with the Kashmiri Hindus?

Her comparison of the two situations shows her callous disregard for the systematic ethnic cleansing of an entire community. The sheer audacity to dismiss the systematic genocide of Kashmiri Hindus by comparing it to random criminal incidents shows either profound stupidity or malicious intent. Which is it, Pallavi?

Sai Pallavi’s Choice Of Films So Far

Shyam Singha Roy, released in 2021, was blatantly anti-Hindu and anti-Brahmin. The story is overtly Hinduphobic and vividly expressed through the lead character “Shyam”‘s experiences with Hindu traditions. In this film, Hindu traditions are not just inaccurately depicted; they are deliberately twisted to provoke disgust. The usual tropes of a “social justice hero” film – untouchability, the evil Brahmin, the exploitative Devadasi system – these are manipulated to show Hindus and Hinduism in the worst possible light.

Compounding this further e grim reality is the portrayal of a corrupt and evil Brahmin pandit, who views the Devadasis as sex slaves and engages in paedophilic acts. It seems like Sai Pallavi’s journey towards wokeness began here.

Her next film, Virata Parvam which was released in 2022 is based on Naxalism – the perfect next step. While the director claims he did not intend to romanticize naxalism, he also says, “Sticking to the facts would have made the film a docu-drama. He introduced a love story for cinematic appeal.”  The story revolves around the heroine played by Sai Pallavi who falls in love with a naxalite (the lead) because of his poetry and in a bid to make him reciprocate her love, she dedicates herself to the “cause”! <Slow claps>

Who better than Sai Pallavi who thinks naxalism is an ideology similar to “peace” taken up by people who wanted to get their demands met to play the female lead role? Oh and, while she philosophizes about ‘violence being wrong’, she had no problem collecting a paycheck for romanticizing Naxal violence in Virata Parvam. Talk about selective morality!

First Shyam Singha Roy’s Hindu-bashing, then romanticizing Naxals in Virata Parvam, and followed by that interview – there’s clearly a pattern here. Sai Pallavi seems to have found her niche in peddling anti-Hindu, anti-national narratives while masquerading as a “character artist”.

The film Amaran seems to once again contain elements that are very visibly anti-Brahmin and anti-Indian, and the trailer does not appear to do justice to Major Mukund Varadarajan’s and his family’s supreme sacrifice. What’s more outrageous is that Sai Pallavi, who can’t tell the difference between terrorists and our armed forces, is a part of Major Mukund Varadarajan’s biopic. Is this some sick joke?

She is also said to be playing the role of Ma Sita in an upcoming film. Will Ma Sita be portrayed as a woke woman or will she distort the character and the film in some other way?
