As Australia recovers from the horrific Bondi Beach mass shooting on Sunday (14 December 2025) evening during the Jewish festival Hanukkah event which saw around 16 people being killed, media across the world seem to be hell bent on labelling the terrorists as Indians.

Pakistani Meltdown

Initial reports identifying the attackers as a Pakistani father and son triggered meltdown especially in neighbouring Pakistan where their media rejected the claim and alleged “media terrorism” by Indian, Afghan and Israeli outlets. ARY News asserted that the attackers were Afghan and described the incident as a false flag operation.

Australian police later confirmed the attackers were a father and son, Sajid Akram (50) and Naveed Akram (24). Sajid died after being shot by police, while Naveed remains hospitalised. Investigators said Naveed had earlier been monitored over suspected ISIS links.

Bloomberg Says Terrorists Had Indian Passports, Changes Headline Later

Bloomberg initially reported that the terrorists travelled to Philippines on Indian passports. This was their headline “Phillipines says Bondi beach father-son terrorists visited on Indian passports”

However, it was edited to read, “Bondi Beach Gunmen Had ISIS Flags, Visited Philippines”.

Here is proof of the edit.

Inside the article, Bloomberg claims that “Sajid Akram, 50, was an Indian national and Australian resident, while his son Naveed Akram, 24, was an Australian national, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Immigration said Tuesday in a statement to reporters. They arrived together in the Philippines on Nov. 1 from Sydney and departed Nov. 28.”

So according to Bloomberg, the father is an Indian national with Australian PR while the son is an Australian national and they both travelled to Philippines, citing a spokesperson for the Philippine Bureau of Immigration.

In the previous version of the article, they directly claimed that the duo were Indian nationals.

The article first freely available was then put behind a paywall.

As per a Times of India report, the father – Sajid Akram entered Australia in 1998 on a student visa and later obtained a resident return visa. He is reported to have worked as a fruit seller and to have possessed a firearms licence for recreational hunting. Authorities said he legally owned six firearms, some of which were brought to Bondi, and that he was also affiliated with a gun club.

A Recipe for Disinformation – Bloomberg’s Credibility, Well-Done

Bloomberg’s reporting on the Bondi Beach terror attack is not merely sloppy; it is actively misleading. By initially splashing “Indian passports” across its headline and then quietly retreating once the narrative became untenable, Bloomberg demonstrated a willingness to inject India into a jihadist terror attack where Indian involvement was neither operationally relevant nor supported by Australian investigators. Bloomberg didn’t pursue truth; they are engineering a narrative.

The 2025 Hindi film Dhurandhar frames India’s fake currency battle as a familiar intelligence-versus-terror-state narrative. Public records and investigative files, however, reveal a far more uncomfortable reality. According to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) documents, parliamentary records, intelligence assessments, and enforcement agency findings, the most damaging vulnerabilities in India’s currency security system emerged not across the border, but within India’s own decision-making apparatus.

Taken together, these records point to a chain of policy decisions and administrative compromises that, according to investigators, left India’s currency system vulnerable for years—conditions later exploited by Pakistan-based counterfeit networks.

Part I: The Architectural Gamble – The 2004 Monopoly Contract

Official records trace the origins of this controversy not to a Pakistani printing press, but to policy decisions taken in New Delhi in 2004. P Chidambaram, upon becoming Finance Minister in the first United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, oversaw a critical decision. In July 2004, his ministry authorised the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to enter into exclusivity agreements for certain banknote security features.

By September 2004, a contract was signed. The British firm De La Rue, a global leader in currency printing and security which had a long historical association with printing Pakistani currency, was granted an exclusive contract to supply a colour-shift security thread for Indian banknotes. This thread, a key anti-counterfeiting feature, changes colour when viewed from different angles.

Subsequent CBI findings and internal file notings flagged two structural problems with the contract from the outset. First, they noted that De La Rue did not possess a granted patent for this specific security thread technology at the time the monopoly agreement was signed. The company’s patent application was reportedly filed in June 2004, published in 2009, and only granted in 2011. This meant the legal basis for granting a monopoly on proprietary technology was arguably absent in 2004.

Second, reports citing internal memos stated that the contract lacked stringent exit clauses, locking India into a single-supplier arrangement without a clear mechanism to disengage if performance or security concerns arose.

What makes the arrangement more consequential is that internal objections surfaced early and repeatedly. By 2006, RBI internal notes allegedly flagged that De La Rue did not hold a valid patent. By 2007, the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) was said to have raised similar concerns about the patent status. Despite these internal red flags, the exclusive arrangement with De La Rue continued without competitive bidding.

The CBI’s January 2023 First Information Report (FIR) did not name Chidambaram as an accused. However, critics and reports argue that the architecture of single-vendor dependency in a critical national security area, established during his tenure, created a systemic vulnerability. The allegation, as framed in media analyses, is that this decision inadvertently allowed security features to stagnate, making them easier for counterfeiters to replicate over time.

Part II: The Enabler’s Signature – The 2013 Extension

Nearly a decade later, the issue re-emerged in a more serious administrative form. The original De La Rue contract had expired in 2009 but was kept alive through temporary extensions. In June 2013, Arvind Mayaram, then serving as the Finance Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, signed off on a three-year extension for De La Rue to continue supplying the colour-shift thread.

This act is the central focus of the CBI’s FIR No. RC0102023A0002, registered on January 23, 2023. The agency alleged that Mayaram, along with unknown officials of the Finance Ministry and representatives of De La Rue, entered into a criminal conspiracy.

The FIR lays out a set of procedural violations that investigators consider central to the case. They claimed the extension was granted in violation of established procedures. The agency alleged there was no mandatory security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and no approval was taken from the Finance Minister, despite internal file notings that explicitly required both. The FIR further alleged that Mayaram ignored earlier warnings about the patent issue and failed to apprise the political leadership of the associated risks.

Mayaram has publicly denied any wrongdoing. His defence, as reported, centred on the argument that continuity of supply was essential to avoid disrupting currency production, a matter of national importance. He maintained that all decisions were taken in the interest of the country and with due diligence.

However, the CBI’s central question, as reflected in its probe, was why continuity was prioritised over strict procedural compliance in a domain directly related to currency security. The FIR pointed out that De La Rue had already been under a cloud. In 2010, the MHA under then-Home Minister Pranab Mukherjee had reportedly blacklisted the firm after intelligence inputs and quality concerns, including allegations of supplying substandard paper and falsifying test certificates. The CBI’s case implied that granting a long-term extension in 2013, after this blacklisting and without fresh security clearance, was a serious procedural lapse.

The FIR also referenced suspicious financial transactions, noting that agencies had discovered that a De La Rue executive, Anil Raghbeer, had received approximately ₹8.2 crore in his offshore accounts in 2011, purportedly beyond his known salary. While the FIR did not directly link this to Mayaram, it cited these transactions as part of the broader suspicion of undue favour.

Part III: The Systemic Blind Spot – Warnings and Delays

Viewed chronologically, the record reflects a pattern of repeated warnings that failed to trigger corrective action. The sequence of events, as pieced together from media accounts citing investigative documents, is as follows:

2006-2007: Internal RBI and SPMCIL memos reportedly flag De La Rue’s lack of a valid patent.

2010: Security agencies raise concerns about De La Rue also supplying Pakistan. The MHA blacklists the firm after quality scandals.

2012: P Chidambaram returns as Finance Minister. Reports suggest the blacklisting was relaxed to a “restricted” category to allow “essential continuity” of supply.

June 2013: Arvind Mayaram signs the three-year extension, which the CBI alleges was done without security clearance or minister’s approval.

January 2023: The CBI registers its FIR, naming Mayaram, unknown officials, and De La Rue representatives.

The gap between the alleged acts and the formal investigation over a decade forms another layer of the story. Complaints and allegations had circulated for years in media and political circles. The CBI’s FIR came only in 2023, and as of late 2025, no chargesheet has been filed, leaving the legal outcomes pending.

Part IV: The Pakistani Nexus – Javed Khanani’s Shadow Network

Parallel to this administrative timeline in India, a covert financial war was being waged. This brings into focus the real-world counterpart to Dhurandhar’s villain: Javed Khanani.

Khanani was no cinematic caricature. Described as a soft-spoken, bespectacled businessman from Karachi, he was the co-owner of Khanani & Kalia International (KKI), a massive hawala (informal money transfer) network. In 2008, the U.S. Treasury Department designated KKI as a “significant transnational criminal organization,” alleging it laundered money for narcotics traffickers and terrorist groups, including those linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Indian and international intelligence assessments, as reported over the years, described KKI as a key financial switchboard for Pakistani deep-state networks. Its role in the Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) ecosystem was alleged to be critical. Investigative reports based on interrogations of captured operatives like Lashkar’s Abdul Karim Tunda described a pipeline: high-quality counterfeit notes printed in state-protected facilities in Pakistan, smuggled via Dubai, Nepal, and Bangladesh, and distributed within India. The proceeds from this FICN, along with other illicit funds, were allegedly cycled and settled through hawala networks like KKI.

The sophistication of the counterfeit notes was a major concern. Reports indicated that by the early 2010s, these “near-perfect” fakes, often printed on high-quality security paper, were flooding India, with annual inflows estimated by agencies to be worth ₹1,500-2,000 crore. This was characterized not as mere crime but as a form of economic warfare, funding terrorism and undermining monetary stability.

Part V: Convergence and Consequence

The troubling question that emerged from investigative journalism was whether India’s domestic procurement decisions inadvertently aided this external threat. The conjecture, often raised in analyses, was this: India’s long-term reliance on a single foreign supplier (De La Rue) for a key security feature, coupled with alleged delays in upgrading and diversifying sources, may have allowed Pakistani counterfeiters time to study and replicate security threads with alarming accuracy. While no public evidence proves a direct leak from De La Rue to Pakistan, the simultaneous decline in De La Rue’s reliability for India and the rise in quality of Pakistan-origin FICN raised uncomfortable suspicions.

The dramatic break in this cycle came with India’s demonetisation in November 2016. The overnight invalidation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes rendered vast stockpiles of FICN worthless, disrupting the entire smuggling and financing network. Reports at the time noted a sharp fall in FICN seizures in the following year.

In a stark postscript, just weeks after demonetisation, on 4 December 2016, Javed Khanani was found dead after a fall from an under-construction building in Karachi. Pakistani police called it a suicide, while his family termed it an accident. No thorough medico-legal autopsy was widely reported. In intelligence and financial circles, as reported by journalists covering the region, whispers suggested his death was linked to the massive financial disruption and liabilities caused by demonetisation, though no evidence of foul play was officially established.

The Unresolved Thriller

Dhurandhar offers a cathartic, fictional conclusion. The real story, as documented in CBI files and investigative reports, remains open-ended and legally unresolved. It presents a complex picture where allegations of procedural bypasses and monopolistic contracts in Delhi intersect with a shadow war of terrorism finance orchestrated from Pakistan.

The CBI’s case against Arvind Mayaram is sub judice; he maintains his innocence. P Chidambaram is not named in the FIR, though his ministerial decisions are scrutinized in the court of public opinion. The broader allegation that emerges from this assemblage of reports is not of outright treason, but of a bureaucratic and political complacency that may have, over a decade, left a critical national security system, currency integrity, exposed.

This is a half-told tale: a thriller where the villains are not cartoonish foreigners, but the gatekeepers of the system itself, and where the climax is not a heroic raid, but a slow, grinding investigation battling against time, politics, and the weight of files. It is a story that underscores how economic warfare is often enabled not just by enemies abroad, but by vulnerabilities at home.

In an era marked by geopolitical instability, nations increasingly resort to aggressive tactics, ranging from economic sanctions to outright military conflict, to assert dominance. This environment has eroded trust in concepts such as global peace and mutual cooperation, replacing traditional international relations with a zero-sum power dynamic.

Negotiations are often reduced to ultimatums, with weaker states subjected to exploitation and engineered dependencies as instruments of coercion. Powerful actors pursue disproportionate responses without restraint, driven by bloc formations centered on trade, commerce, and technological leverage.

National progress is frequently motivated by fear of vulnerability rather than shared aspirations for peace, prosperity, and human solidarity. Even advancements in science and technology, once dedicated to human betterment, have been repurposed as tools of suppression. Historically, diplomatic alliances resemble survival pacts in a predatory ecosystem, prioritizing short-term instincts over enduring partnerships grounded in common values.

Amid this landscape, India emerges as an outlier: a nation pursuing self-development without infringing on others’ sovereignty. Its growth model emphasizes domestic abundance and global prosperity, unencumbered by sectarian, religious, or economic biases. India’s actions reflect a deep civilizational ethos, exemplified by Operation Sindoor.

Despite enduring Pakistan-sponsored terrorism since independence, with the Pahalgam attack as a recent manifestation, India’s retaliation targeted only terrorism’s infrastructure and perpetrators, avoiding civilian casualties or escalation. This measured approach echoes the Mahabharata episode where Sage Vyasa intervened to prevent Arjuna from unleashing the Brahmastra against Ashwatthama, averting needless destruction.

In contrast, responses by other powers such as Israel’s against Hamas or Russia’s in Ukraine have drawn criticism for excess. While ancient civilizations like these retain historical legacies, their handling of adversarial interests often lacks restraint, bordering on the unrestrained. India, however, garners international acclaim for its firm yet proportionate stance against Pakistan, without leveraging geostrategic or economic influence to solicit approval.

India’s diplomatic engagements are fundamentally rooted in cultural foundations, evolving gradually unlike those of other nations, which prioritize security, finance, and trade. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal outreach to global leaders fostering broad, informal connections stems from his formative experience as a swayamsevak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the world’s largest sociocultural organization.

This contrasts with counterparts whose interactions are formal and tethered to immediate national interests. Such proactive engagement proved instrumental in countering provocations during India’s responses to the Uri and Pulwama attacks, by preemptively shaping global narratives on Pakistan-backed terrorism.

India consistently supports allies without endorsing violence. It has refrained from backing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, advocating instead for regional peace, yet maintained ties with Moscow despite Western pressures – a testament to prioritizing enduring trust over transient alliances. During Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, precipitated by overreliance on China, India extended timely aid without retribution or demands for concessions, honoring ancient civilizational bonds. This mirrors Lord Rama’s post-victory conduct in the Ramayana: after defeating Ravana, he restored the kingdom to Vibhishana without annexation or expectations.

Prime Minister Modi’s diplomatic strategy is principled rather than opportunistic, aligning with the conventional imperatives of global politics. India views its historical resilience amid invasions as a mandate to advance humanity’s collective mission. While international relations often remain shortsighted and exploitative, India extends aid even to adversaries like Türkiye, despite its criticisms and support for India’s detractors.

The “Brand Bharat” embodies trust, mutual respect, and broader human goals. No other nation matches India’s reputation for reliability. Balancing power with self-respect underpins Indian diplomacy, promoting peace, development, and welfare. Its paramount aspiration envisions a global architecture grounded in universal Dharma; wherein sovereign interests converge in symbiotic harmony rather than antagonistic collision – a paradigm aptly designated as “Hindu Diplomacy.”

The latest United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) report on India stands out for its deeply biased and one-sided representation of Hindu society and issues.

Titled “Systematic Religious Persecution in India,” the November 2025 issue update reads less as an objective assessment and more as a politically motivated dossier that ignores the foundational wounds of the Hindu community to paint a picture of unidirectional persecution.

A Telling Typo: “Barbi” Masjid And Historical Erasure

The report’s lack of rigor is immediately exposed by a fundamental error: it misspells the Babri Masjid as the “Barbi Masjid.” This is not a mere typographical slip but a symptom of a superficial understanding that undermines the report’s credibility from the outset.

More egregiously, the document dedicates extensive space to the 1992 demolition of the mosque, describing it as a “16th-century mosque” and detailing the subsequent violence. However, it completely erases the reason for the centuries-long dispute. There is not a single acknowledgment of the widely held Hindu belief, backed by archaeological evidence and historical texts, that the mosque was constructed by the Mughal commander Babur in the 16th century after demolishing a pre-existing temple marking the birthplace of Lord Rama.

The report’s coverage of the Babri Masjid demolition amplifies only one side of communal conflict, laying blame exclusively at the feet of Hindu organizations. What’s blatantly missing is any recognition of historic injustices faced by Hindus, whether it is the forced exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, systematic deprivations in education, or violence against temples and festivals. Such selective storytelling undermines the credibility of the entire document.

Pathologizing Hindu Identity

At the heart of the USCIRF’s critique lies a tendency to demonize Hindu identity and aspirations. The report frames legitimate concerns such as the reclamation of temple spaces, prevention of forced conversions, and protection of indigenous cultural practices as inherently “extremist.” It conveniently ignores centuries of historical trauma, destruction of sacred spaces, and attempts at preserving a threatened civilization. By labeling movements for Hindu renaissance as exclusionary, the report erases the community’s right to pursue justice and self-respect.

One-Sided Critique of Secularism

According to USCIRF, India’s secularism fails because it does not strictly separate religion from the state. Yet, in practice, minorities receive extensive state support, whether through scholarships, separate educational boards, or official control of land and funds for religious institutions. Such privileges and protections for non-Hindu groups are never acknowledged, revealing the asymmetry in the report’s analysis.

Misrepresentation of Anti-Conversion Laws

India’s anti-conversion laws, vilified by the report, are the result of decades of aggressive, often coercive proselytization targeting vulnerable Hindu communities. Ignoring the ethical dilemma posed by incentivized conversions, USCIRF instead recasts genuine protective measures as persecution, missing the entire context behind these laws.

Textbook History Reforms Distorted

Efforts to revise school curricula to reflect a more balanced history are dismissed as communal, despite the fact that many textbooks marginalize indigenous figures and distort civilizational contributions. The report thus stifles the legitimate desire of Hindus to reclaim their narrative from decades of exclusion.

Stereotyping Hindu Organizations

The broad-brush characterization of the RSS and BJP as inherently violent and intolerant flies in the face of their vast charitable and social work, including education, healthcare, and disaster relief. Demonizing organizations that millions of Hindus consider essential to nation-building reveals either ignorance or a deliberate intent to malign.

Neglect of Demographic and Security Concerns

Measures like the CAA/NRC are targeted as exclusionary tactics in the report. From a Hindu perspective, these laws represent efforts to secure cultural survival and deal with illegal demographic changes, not vague xenophobic impulses.

Underplaying Reform and Social Progress

References to caste-based conversions mischaracterize the problems and ignore vigorous ongoing reforms in temple access, reservation policies, and community outreach that are advancing Hindu social justice – initiatives rarely recognized by the report.

Denial of Hindu Victimhood

Perhaps most disturbing is the persistent framing of Hindus exclusively as aggressors, not as victims of violence, discrimination, or targeted policies. This erasure perpetuates a narrative that dehumanizes the majority, making it harder for real dialogue or reconciliation.

External Recommendations, Internal Harm

Calling for the US to designate India a “Country of Particular Concern,” the USCIRF perpetuates neo-colonial intervention and disregards India’s sovereignty and unique context. Such recommendations only fuel division and undermine confidence in international institutions.

USCIRF’s Dubious Credibility And Extremist Alignments

Adding to its long record of bias, USCIRF’s credibility is further undermined by revelations about its own leadership. Several commissioners have been linked to hardline Christian-supremacist groups, while others maintain associations with Islamic organizations accused of supporting extremist agendas. The Commission has even positioned itself as a defender of Khalistani separatists, issuing statements that effectively endorse the rhetoric of individuals tied to terror networks. In its reaction to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, USCIRF went so far as to accuse India of “transnational repression,” echoing separatist propaganda rather than presenting evidence-based analysis. These ideological entanglements expose USCIRF as a politically motivated body wielding the language of “religious freedom” to target India while shielding extremist elements it finds ideologically convenient.

Last Word

The USCIRF’s report is a glaring example of shoddy scholarship marred by deep-rooted bias. Its selective use of facts, refusal to engage Hindu perspectives, and over-reliance on politicized NGOs reveal an intent to pressurize rather than empower. For any credible international body, accuracy, balance, and context must come first. The Hindu community and the wider world deserve better than this – an honest, fact-based discussion about pluralism, justice, and human rights in India.

A planned Murugan temple in North Carolina has become the latest target of online Hinduphobic attacks, weeks after similar controversies erupted over Hindu religious symbols and statues in the United States.

The temple project, initiated in 2018 by a Tamil Hindu community organization, aims to build a sprawling complex in Moncure, North Carolina, featuring the world’s tallest statue of Lord Murugan, along with a Tamil cultural museum, library, and temple. According to the official website, the complex will span more than 130 acres.

Whites Decry Hindu Deity Statues

White journalist who claims to be an “independent” journo Stephen Horn triggered controversy with a viral post on social media, claiming that “Hindus have acquired over a hundred acres for a massive temple complex in the rural town of Moncure, NC The Tamils plan to build the world’s largest statute of their “warrior god” Murugan, which would be taller than the Statue of Liberty”

Horn added,“However, the “Carolina Murugan Temple” site appears to still be largely undeveloped while the organization attempts to fundraise the millions and millions of dollars required with events such as a fundraiser today selling “blessed” Sarees”

His post drew amplified reactions from some conservative Christian zealot circles.

Matt Van Swol, a former nuclear scientist with the U.S. Department of Energy, wrote, “HOLY CRAP!!! Hindus in North Carolina have acquired over 130 acres of residential land and are CURRENTLY building a MASSIVE temple with plans for a 155-foot statue of Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war. The statue will be taller than the Statue of Liberty… WHAT?!!!!!!!”

Texas Republican leader Alexander Duncan, who had earlier described Lord Hanuman as a “false god”, commented that such temples were “not what the Founding Fathers envisioned when they wrote the First Amendment.” So much for religious freedom in the US!

He even shared a verse from the Bible to underscore his point. He wrote, “Those who worship idols are disgraced—all who brag about their worthless gods—for every god must bow to him.” Psalm 97:7″

Hindus Call Out Hypocrisy

The wave of online criticism follows similar anti-Hindu sentiment expressed last year over the 90-foot Panchaloha Hanuman statue in Texas, which drew protests from church groups that branded the deity “demonic.” The Hanuman statue, built on private property, had faced demonstrations by local Christian groups in 2024.

Christian Land Holdings and Humungous Statues in India

Observers have noted the contrast between Western criticism of Hindu religious expressions abroad and the widespread Christian symbolism in India, where the Catholic Church is estimated to be the second-largest landowner after the Indian government, holding over seven crore hectares (17.29 crore acres) valued at roughly ₹20,000 crore.

India is home to over 28,000 churches and numerous Christian statues, several of which are far larger than the Texas Hanuman statue. These include:

Pune, Maharashtra – A bronze statue of Jesus Christ unveiled at the World Peace Dome, MIT World Peace University, in November 2022, alongside 54 other statues within the 263-foot-high dome.

Ambala, Haryana – A 5.5-foot statue at the 1848 Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, one of the oldest in the region.

Ramanagara, Karnataka – A 114-foot-tall Jesus statue under construction in Kanakapura, initiated in 2020 by Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar.

Bengaluru, Karnataka – A 35-foot statue at Mount Olive, Gethsemane Garden, Hennur Bande, made of reinforced cement and fibre, completed for ₹65 lakh.

Mumbai, Maharashtra – The statue near Infant Jesus Chapel in Malad West, which became famous in 2016 for “seeping water.”

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – A 10-meter (33-foot) statue made of fibre, wax, and resin, with eyes that glow in the dark.

Velankanni, Tamil Nadu – The Sacred Heart of Jesus statue at the Our Lady of Vailankanni Church, a major Catholic pilgrimage site.

Mumbai, Maharashtra – The Jesus statue at Mount Mary Basilica in Bandra, one of the oldest Catholic churches in India.

Vizhinjam, Tamil Nadu – A 33-foot-tall statue of Jesus with arms spanning 33 feet, totaling 90 feet in height with its base.

Assolna, Goa – The Cristo Rei monument, constructed in 1934, inspired by a similar statue in Karachi.

Altinho, Goa – A statue of Jesus Christ outside the Bishop’s Palace in Panaji.

Hyderabad, Telangana – A statue inside St. Joseph’s Cathedral, dating back to the early 19th century.

Mysore, Karnataka – Saint Philomena’s Cathedral, with twin spires 175 feet tall and a 54-foot statue of the saint.

Kolkata, West Bengal – A bronze statue of Mother Teresa unveiled at the Archbishop House on her 106th birth anniversary.

Thiruvalla, Kerala – The “Healing Christ,” a 368 cm-tall (12 ft) tri-metal sculpture at Believers Church Medical College Hospital, the largest of its kind globally.

In addition to these, Christian icons and statues of Jesus, Mary, and various saints are visible in public spaces and along roadsides across India, where they stand without opposition.

Hindus have pointed out that the backlash against projects such as the planned Murugan temple in North Carolina highlights a clear inconsistency in how religious freedom is perceived in the West. It is noteworthy that Christian communities face no resistance when constructing large monuments in India or other parts of the world, yet similar Hindu initiatives abroad are often met with criticism and mistrust – Christian religious symbols are readily accepted as expressions of faith, while Hindu symbols are frequently portrayed as contentious.

In a development that has triggered widespread scrutiny online, Scottish travel vlogger Callum Mill, known for his YouTube channel Callum Abroad, is in India on a tourist visa this year. The entry comes despite Mill’s documented links to Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested in May 2025 on charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Social media users raised concerns about Mill’s ongoing presence in India, pointing to his past association with Malhotra and the Pakistani sponsorship of his travels. Screenshots circulated online showed that several of his Pakistan videos were produced in collaboration with Swiftnine Ltd, a Lahore-based travel agency alleged to have links to Pakistan’s intelligence establishment.

Following the backlash, Mill reportedly locked his social media accounts.

The 2025 Pakistan Connection

Mill’s connection to Malhotra first surfaced in May 2025, when Indian media reported on a video showing the two meeting at Anarkali Bazaar in Lahore. The video, verified by NDTV, showed Malhotra walking through the market surrounded by at least six armed men carrying AK-47 rifles and wearing jackets labelled “No Fear.”

In the footage, Mill, who identified himself as a Scottish YouTuber, asked Malhotra about her visit to Pakistan. She confirmed it was her first time meeting him and described Pakistan’s hospitality as “great.” When Mill inquired why she was accompanied by armed escorts, he remarked on camera, “She’s the one with the guys, with all the security. Look at all the guns she’s got surrounding her — six gunmen surrounding her.”

The presence of armed guards around Malhotra, contrasted with Mill’s solo travel, raised questions about the VIP treatment she appeared to receive. Later investigations revealed that Malhotra had attended high-profile parties in Pakistan and had been in contact with security and intelligence officials. Police sources said she continued communicating with them after returning to India.

Malhotra’s Arrest and Investigations

Jyoti Malhotra was arrested earlier this year by Indian authorities for allegedly passing sensitive information to Pakistan. Her digital devices were seized, and investigators are examining evidence of financial irregularities and suspicious foreign funding.

Police sources said Malhotra’s lavish lifestyle including first-class flights, luxury hotel stays, and high-end dining was inconsistent with her known income. Investigators believe she travelled to Pakistan on a sponsored trip, and later made a similar luxury visit to China, where she was again seen travelling in chauffeur-driven cars and visiting upscale jewellery outlets.

Concerns Over India’s Visa Screening

Mill’s recent arrival in India on a tourist visa has prompted public criticism of India’s visa vetting process. Commentators questioned how a foreign national with known links to an accused ISI agent and with visa sponsorship from a Pakistani firm was cleared for entry.

Online users also pointed to content patterns on Mill’s YouTube channel, contrasting his portrayal of India and Pakistan. His videos from India from the past include captions such as “BJP rally is so chaotic” and “Ganga river is so polluted,” whereas his Pakistan videos are titled “Beauty of Azad Kashmir” and “Pakistani hospitality.”

He has been badmouthing India in almost all his videos.

He also refers to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir as Azad Kashmir.

This has led to further questions about whether a tourist visa holder is permitted to make political commentary or refer to Jammu and Kashmir as “Indian-occupied Kashmir”, terminology often used in Pakistani propaganda.

Several users have called for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on social media, urging authorities to investigate Mill’s activities, revoke his visa, and blacklist his passport. Some have described the episode as an intelligence lapse, given the existing red flags from his prior association with Malhotra and the sponsorship of his travels by a Pakistani agency.

At the time of publishing this article, there has been no official statement from the MEA, the Home Ministry, or Indian intelligence agencies regarding Mill’s visa status or his movements within India.

China has filed a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), alleging that India’s electric vehicle (EV) and battery subsidy programs violate global trade rules by favoring domestic products and disadvantaging Chinese manufacturers seeking access to India’s growing EV market. Beijing requested consultations with New Delhi under the WTO dispute settlement mechanism on 20 October 2025, targeting three Indian policies: the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery storage, the PLI scheme for the automobile and auto component industry, and a separate policy promoting electric passenger car production.

China claims that these measures “condition eligibility for and the disbursement of incentives” on the use of domestically produced goods, effectively discriminating against Chinese-origin products. According to the filing, the restrictions violate India’s commitments under the Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM) Agreement, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994, and the Agreement on Trade-Related Investment Measures (TRIMs). The filing also states that the Indian policies “nullify or impair benefits accruing to China.” China is seeking a mutually agreed date for consultations as the first step in resolving the dispute.

India’s incentive programs aim to strengthen domestic EV and battery production while reducing reliance on imports. The PLI-ACC scheme, launched in May 2021, carries an outlay of ₹18,100 crore to develop 50 GWh of domestic battery capacity. The auto-focused PLI scheme, approved in September 2021 with a budget of ₹25,938 crore, targets the local production of advanced automotive technologies and the creation of jobs.

For Chinese EV companies such as BYD, India represents a strategically vital market as profits shrink elsewhere and regulatory barriers, including a 27% tariff in the EU, limit expansion. Trade data shows that while India’s exports to China declined by 14.5% in 2024–25, imports from China rose 11.5%, widening India’s trade deficit with Beijing to $99.2 billion.

The WTO consultations could pave the way for the establishment of a formal dispute panel if India and China fail to reach a settlement through dialogue, potentially escalating tensions over India’s “Made in India” EV push.

The recent violent protests in Ladakh have captured national attention, not just for the unrest itself but for the broader questions they raise about development, governance, and strategic security. What may appear as a local agitation for greater autonomy and protections is, on closer inspection, part of a complex interplay of political, environmental, and geopolitical factors that demand careful analysis.

The Protest and Its Roots

The immediate trigger for the protests is a demand to include Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would grant the Union Territory greater autonomy over local governance, taxation, and judicial powers. Protesters argue that such powers are necessary to preserve the region’s unique culture, language, and fragile environment.

Many observers, however, question the choice of the Sixth Schedule rather than the Fifth Schedule. The Fifth Schedule applies to most tribal areas in Central and Southern India and allows local councils to advise on development planning in coordination with the state governor. The Sixth Schedule, which currently covers tribal regions in the Northeast, provides far greater powers, including the ability to execute development projects independently, collect taxes, and manage judicial functions. Granting Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh would thus represent a significant legal and constitutional shift, requiring an amendment.

This legal nuance is critical. Critics argue that if implemented, Sixth Schedule powers could slow down critical infrastructure projects in the region, such as highways, tunnels, and airstrips—projects vital for both local development and national security in this border-sensitive area.

Selective Protest: Who Is Involved?

It is important to note that not all residents of Ladakh are participating in or supporting these protests. Analysts have described the movement as driven by a select group of activists (you know who they are) who have used environmental and cultural concerns to amplify their visibility. These activists claim that India’s development projects are harming Ladakh’s delicate ecology. Yet, similar or even larger-scale projects by China in neighboring regions such as Aksai Chin, Western Tibet, and Xinjiang have not provoked comparable protests.

Over the past few years, China has developed extensive infrastructure in these areas, including strategic highways, airstrips, and military bases, releasing millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the environment in the process. Local observers note the irony: while Chinese development was largely ignored, Indian development in the same ecologically sensitive region is being framed as environmentally destructive. Was the environment not fragile then?

A Strategic Laboratory?

Some analysts have described Ladakh as a “laboratory” for protest tactics. Observers note parallels with developments in Nepal, where protests were reportedly organized under the guise of legal or judicial issues to engineer a regime change. In Ladakh, the protests are framed as environmental and cultural advocacy, but they may serve broader strategic objectives, including testing protest methodologies that could later be applied elsewhere in India.

These tactics include:

  • Street protests – visibly mobilizing citizens on emotive issues like language, culture, and ecology.
  • Media campaigns – amplifying narratives of ecological damage and the insensitivity of the government.
  • Intellectual framing – engaging think tanks, podcasts, and debates to sustain the narrative at a national level.

The careful orchestration of these campaigns suggests that the unrest is not entirely spontaneous but part of a wider, planned strategy.

Geopolitical Dimensions

The protests also have significant geopolitical implications. Analysts point to the role of China’s United Front Work Department, a specialized branch of its Ministry of State Security tasked with shaping foreign narratives and obstructing strategic projects abroad.

According to experts, the department employs a two-pronged approach:

Aggressive media posture – using public statements, renaming of places, and symbolic gestures to influence perceptions. For example, China has repeatedly claimed Arunachal Pradesh as part of South Tibet in international discourse.

Obstructionist campaigns – framing Indian development projects in Ladakh and Kashmir as environmentally destructive, thereby creating delays or resistance at local and national levels.

This strategy aligns with China’s broader objective of maintaining a strategic edge in the Himalayan region by slowing India’s infrastructure parity, particularly in border-sensitive areas.

Development vs Ecology

The protests spotlight a deeper tension between development and ecological concerns. ‘Activists’ like Sonam Wangchuk argue that India’s projects in Ladakh threaten fragile ecosystems and tribal cultures. Yet environmental arguments are selectively applied, as similar large-scale Chinese projects in the region received little to no pushback.

Experts note that climate change and environmental degradation are global commons problems. Industrialization in other parts of the world has contributed far more to atmospheric carbon dioxide than localized development in India. Despite this, India’s projects in Ladakh are criticized, demonstrating the selective framing used in the protest narrative.

Political Implications

Domestically, the protests intersect with ongoing political struggles. Analysts note that the Congress party and certain local actors may be using the unrest to challenge the ruling BJP, weaken public perception of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and create a broader narrative of governmental insensitivity. We already saw that despite the mob being of an older age group, Congress and supporting handles on social media called it “Gen Z protest” after Wangchuk blamed them for the arson and violence.
While the majority of Ladakh’s population is not involved, a small, vocal ‘activist’ group has been able to attract significant attention, making use of national media and social media platforms.

The Ladakh protests can thus be seen as part of a larger pattern: attempts to create street-level unrest, amplify grievances via media, and frame the narrative in ways that slow down government initiatives. This pattern has parallels with previous campaigns, including protests around the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and other socio-political movements in India.

This comes exactly a week after Rahul Gandhi called on the youth, students, and Gen Z to “save the Constitution, protect democracy, and stop vote theft,” effectively encouraging them to mobilize politically against the government. By framing the youth as defenders of democracy, he positions them to take direct action, which can be interpreted as instigating unrest. His remarks echo regional examples like Nepal, where youth-led movements spiraled into protests and chaos, suggesting a potential blueprint for similar disruption in India. Critics argue that his message is less about safeguarding democracy and more about stirring dissent among young people against the current government, with Rahul himself cast as a guiding figure.

Looking Ahead

While the immediate unrest may have calmed, observers warn that the real work of shaping narratives is only beginning. Intellectual discourse, media debates, and online campaigns are expected to continue framing India’s development as ecologically insensitive, potentially creating long-term obstacles for projects in Ladakh and similar regions.

The protests highlight the need for citizens, policymakers, and analysts to critically assess the motivations behind movements. Not every demonstration is purely local; some may be influenced by broader political or geopolitical agendas. Understanding these layers is crucial, especially in regions like Ladakh, which are simultaneously ecologically fragile, strategically vital, and historically marginalized.

An undated video featuring left-wing extremist writer Arundhati Roy is being widely shared on social media platforms, in which she describes the Indian state as “a colonial state” that has waged military wars against its own people in regions like Kashmir, northeastern states, Punjab, Telangana, and Goa.

Roy argues that the Indian government, backed by an “upper caste Hindu state,” deployed armed forces in these areas, contrasting India’s approach unfavorably with Pakistan’s treatment of its citizens.

One particularly contentious claim in the video is about the 1961 liberation of Goa. Roy suggests that it was not freedom from colonial rule but a form of aggression by an “upper caste Hindu state” against the Christian population.

In the video, she said, “The Indian state, from the moment it became a sovereign nation, from the moment it shook off the shackles of colonialism, it became a colonial state. And it has waged war since 1947 in Kashmir, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Telangana, Punjab, Kashmir, Goa, Hyderabad. If you look at it, it’s like a state that has been perpetually at war and a military war and deploying the army against its own people. The state of Pakistan has not deployed its army against its own people in the way the democratic Indian state has. And if you look at who are these people that the Indian state chose to fight, in all the northeastern states, they were tribal people. In Kashmir, it was the Muslims. In Telangana, it was the tribal people. In Hyderabad, it was the Muslims. In Goa, it’s the Christians. In Punjab, it’s the Sikhs. So, you see this sort of upper caste Hindu state perpetually at war.”

Truth About 1961 Goan Liberation

As regards the 1961 military operation, India’s annexation of Goa ended over 450 years of Portuguese colonial rule. This brief campaign, known as Operation Vijay, lasted just over 36 hours with minimal casualties on both sides.

The Indian government, led by then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, had first sought diplomatic and peaceful solutions but was forced to take military action after decades of failed negotiations and Portuguese refusal to relinquish control. The action was widely seen in India as the liberation of Goa from colonizers, not an act of religious oppression against Christians.

The Reality Roy Omits: The Goan Inquisition

The Goan Inquisition (1560–1812), a dark 250-year chapter in history, was indeed a brutal institution run by Portuguese colonialist authorities. Eyewitness accounts, such as those by Gabriel Dellon, a 17th-century French detainee in Goa, detail harrowing events including executions for “heresy,” forced conversions, and grave desecrations.

The Inquisition targeted Hindus, Jews, and even Christians accused of “Judaizing” or practicing their former faith in secret. The punishments were grotesque. Dellon writes of a dead Christian man, tried posthumously for heresy, whose remains were exhumed and burned. The living faced public executions at the stake. Those who consented to a last-minute conversion were granted the ‘mercy’ of being strangled before their bodies were burned; all others were burned alive. Their portraits were later displayed in churches as a warning.

The Inquisition sought to erase indigenous religious practices and enforce Christian orthodoxy but also retained Portuguese-era social hierarchies such as the caste system among converts.

This was the oppressive colonial reality, one where people were persecuted for their faith and burned without trial, that the Indian state ended in 1961. To frame this liberation as an act of Hindu aggression is not just inaccurate; it is a perverse insult to the memory of its victims.

Despite this traumatic past, the Christian community in Goa today receives no hate because Hindus are a micro minority in the state, reducing in number as the days go by.

Exposing Roy’s Frame

Roy’s portrayal distorts the historical realities in several ways. She equated India’s democratic state actions with colonial oppression ignores the context of India’s unity and sovereignty after independence. The Indian military action in Goa was against a foreign colonial power, not an indigenous religious group.

Roy’s commentary is not an isolated lapse but part of a persistent pattern. For her, oppression is not a historical fact to be accurately recorded but a narrative to be weaponized selectively. She vocally condemns the Indian state while whitewashing the crimes of actual colonial and fanatical regimes that inflicted generations of suffering upon millions.

Her rhetoric thrives on sowing division and painting the entire India, a complex, pluralistic democracy, with the reductive brush of majoritarian hate.

The Christian community of Goa remains an integral part of India’s diverse social fabric. The Goan Inquisition was Hindu persecution by the Western Christian powers; the liberation was not an Indian state action against Christians; it was for freedom. The caste-based critique of the Indian state conflates colonial legacies and post-independence developments simplistically.

Experts and scholars emphasize that while India has had internal conflicts and human rights challenges, the history of Goa’s liberation was a decolonizing event benefiting all Goans regardless of faith, not an upper-caste Hindu war on Christians.

A video of Pakistani sports commentator Shahnawaz Rana making derogatory remarks about the Somnath temple during a cricket discussion has gone viral on social media and has triggered widespread outrage on various platforms.

Rana, speaking on the YouTube channel Sports Roundup on September 11, said “If you play well, then there’s no reason you can’t defeat them; and I say this with full confidence, because I have criticized this team a lot  – all their programs bear witness, and the one sitting with me today, making all sorts of gestures, I keep asking, why is it like this, why is it this way? But listen to me, this is my homeland, this is my team. And this is the team that, at any given moment, can do something like raze the Somnath temple, and at any time, can scale K2. So, never hold the kind of expectations from this team that make you think, “No, they absolutely cannot do it.” It’s possible. That’s the thing,” while attempting to boost confidence ahead of the September 14 India–Pakistan clash.

The comment on razing Somnath temple, widely criticised online, has been labelled as an instance of casual Hinduphobia being normalised in Pakistani cricket commentary.

The controversy comes a year after another Pakistani commentator, Sohrab Barkat, mocked Hindu beliefs during his coverage of the India–South Africa T20 World Cup final, invoking references to the sacred cow and Lord Vishnu.

It is noteworthy that Pakistani cricketer Faheem Ashraf also faced backlash for a social media post in the aftermath of India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025. The operation, which targeted terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam, was seen in India as a symbolic act of justice for widowed women.

Ashraf shared an Instagram post depicting an illustration of a Pakistani soldier applying sindoor to a woman draped in the Indian tricolour, with the caption “New Chapter Begins.” The post was criticised in India as mocking the suffering of women who lost their husbands in terrorist violence.
